        Shiyouindo Soshoku].

      - Kyoto, Unsodo 1924. Folio (370x255mm), loose as issued in publisher's cloth portfolio with printed label; four leaves of text, 33 plates (10 are colour lithographs) of designs with a few photo illustrations of finished work; the last three plates are alphabets (ie Japanese characters) in new modern styles. Rare. In fact I have expert advice that this is 'ubu' - which when applied to books I'm told means very rare and special. This is one of the more luxuriously produced portfolios of modern Japanese designs of the period; the colour plates are glowing lithographs. Part of the fascination of Japanese modernism is that not only did 'commercial art' encompass such a breadth of, to us, disparate disciplines but that they were given equal weight. Show windows are not less important than advertising graphics, or lighting, or even architecture itself. They all demand an equal application of inventiveness and artists and designers turned their hand to buildings, posters, books, stage and costumes, and show windows with equal relish. Wada was just such a designer of the Taisho and early Showa periods; he also produced albums of alphabets and interior designs. In later years he turned to politics and economics, which is just sad. OCLC finds only the National Diet copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

"Les valses nobles et sentimentales" - Autograph Musical Quotation

1924. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An elegant AMQS from the important French composer, penned on his monogrammed stationery. Ravel has written 5 bars from his third waltz of Les Valses nobles et sentimentales, notated on a hand-drawn stave. Addressed to a Madame Catherine Parker in Chicago, with her name and address typewritten above the quotation, and dated 27 January 1924. 1 page, 4to, personal stationery; separations at folds repaired verso with cello tape, vertical fold touching holograph date with some loss, faint uneven toning. Together with a reproduction portrait photograph. The piano version of Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales was published in 1911, and an orchestral version was published in 1912. The title was chosen in hommage to Franz Schubert, who had released collections of waltzes in 1823 entitled Valses nobles and Valses sentimentales. The piano edition is published with a quotation of Henri de Régnier: "…le plaisir délicieux et toujours nouveau d'une occupation inutile" (the delicious and forever-new pleasure of a useless occupation). The suite contains an eclectic blend of Impressionist and Modernist music, which is especially evident in the orchestrated version.

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

        Ãœber Quantenmechanik.

Berlin: Springer, 1924. First edition, the very rare offprint, of this important paper marking the transition from the ‘old quantum theory’ to ‘quantum mechanics.’ “It was Born who coined the term ‘quantum mechanics’ in a 1924 paper [offered here], in which he dealt with the problematic translation of classical formulas into their quantum-theoretic analogues by means of the correspondence principle” (Kragh, <em>Quantum Generations</em>, p. 159). “In June 1924, Born completed his paper ‘On quantum mechanics.’ In this article Born tried to establish a method by which the classical perturbation theory of multiply periodic non-degenerate systems could be applied to quantum phenomena which involve external periodic disturbances or internal couplings. So far, Born argued, theories of poly-electronic systems, such as the helium atom, which treated the electronic interactions along classical lines, had to fail since electrons affect each other with frequencies of the order of those of light, but the interaction between matter and light is evidently a ‘non-mechanical’ quantum process; one cannot expect, therefore, that the interactions between electrons can be treated along classical lines either. Born now suggested a solution of the problem by generalizing Kramers’ treatment of the interaction between radiation and electrons into a ‘quantum mechanics’ of interactions. In carrying out this program, Born showed that the transition from classical mechanics to what he called ‘quantum mechanics’ can be obtained in accordance with Bohr's correspondence principle if a certain differential is replaced by a corresponding difference …” (Jammer, <em>Conceptual Foundations of Quantum Mechanics</em>, pp. 191-2). Not on OCLC; no copies in auction records.</p> <p>By 1924, the accumulation of experimental anomalies, together with a widespread dissatisfaction with the conceptual and logical structure of the existing quantum theory, created a situation of crisis in the small community of atomic physicists. “The feeling of a crisis in atomic physics gave rise to several proposals of a radical nature, perhaps the most radical one being the idea that energy and momentum are not conserved in individual atomic processes. This idea, which featured prominently in a theory offered by Bohr, Kramers and Slater (BKS) in 1924, was an attempt to understand radiation from atoms without making use of the concept of light quanta, which were particles <em>non grata</em> in Copenhagen. The BKS atom with its orchestra of ‘virtual oscillators’ was as original as it was controversial… Its influence was particularly strong in the dispersion theories that attracted much attention in the final phase of the old quantum theory and were greatly significant in the revolutionary change to a new ‘quantum mechanics’” (Kragh, <em>Niels Bohr and the Quantum Atom</em>, p. 313).</p> <p>“An important paper by Born published in August 1924 took its starting point in the ‘considerable progress’ made with the BKS theory and Kramers’ use of it to explain the dispersion of light. Born’s paper, entitled ‘ ber Quantenmechanik,’ merits attention not only because it introduced ‘quantum mechanics’ as the name for the quantum theory of the future, but also because it was a serious attempt to formulate the general structure of this still unborn theory. Although Born made use of virtual oscillators as “the real primary thing”, he stressed that his theory was independent of the “still disputed conceptual framework of that theory [BKS], such as the statistical interpretation of energy and momentum transfer.” The abstract theory included Kramers’ dispersion theory, which it connected to Heisenberg’s theory of multiplets and the anomalous Zeeman effect. From a formal point of view its most important result was that it offered a “formal passage from classical mechanics to a ‘quantum mechanics’ … in the sense of a transition from differential to difference equations”. According to Born, if a transition from a stationary state of quantum number <em>n </em>to another state of quantum number <em>n - Ï„ </em>was characterized by some classical function <em>F</em>(<em>n</em>)<em>, </em>the function could be translated into its quantum-theoretical analogue by a replacement of the kind</p> <p>[which] has been called ‘Born’s correspondence rule’ … He emphasized that whereas the classical dispersion formula as derived from perturbation theory contained action variables and other reminiscences of mechanical orbits, in its quantum-theoretical translation only observable quantities appeared” (<em>ibid</em>., 341).</p> <p>“Werner Heisenberg, who spent the winter semester 1923/24 in Göttingen, assisted Born in this work – with great profit, as his subsequent comprehensive study of scattering and dispersion, carried out together with Kramers, clearly shows [‘Uber die Streuung von Strahlung durch Atome,’ <em>Zeitschrift für Physik</em> 31 (1925), 681-708]” (Jammer, p. 193). This paper “served as the apex of the virtual-oscillator technique and, in retrospect, as the final touch needed for Heisenberg to “fabricate quantum mechanics,” as he called it, six months later” (Cassidy, <em>Beyond Uncertainty</em>, p. 137). Offprint from Zeitschrift für Physik 26, no. 6, 20 August 1924. 8vo (230 x 158 mm), pp. 379-395. Original printed wrappers. Very fine.

Bunt mashin: fantasticheskie stseny [The revolt of the machines: fantastic scenes].

Leningrad: Vremia 1924 - Octavo (20.8 × 13.8 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by S. Kupriianova; 90, [6] pp. About very good, with light fraying to fragile wrappers (small loss to right margin of front wrapper); text toned due to paper stock; overall well-preserved. First edition of one of the first works Aleksei Tolstoi wrote after returning from emigration, a play which amounted to little more than a plagiarism of Karel Capek's famous science fiction play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots). Tolstoi rather disingenuously notes that he took the "theme" from Capek, adding that the Czech dramaturg himself had been "inspired" by English and French predecessors. Tolstoi also gave an interview in 1923 in which he attempted to present Capek's play, now acknowledged as a key work of twentieth-century literature, as a flawed play in need of improvement. But he failed to fool his contemporaries about the extent of his borrowings. Gorky, for instance, was very displeased, calling the work all but a plagiarism. Capek's original version contains the first use of the word &#147;robot&#148; in any language and depicts a rebellion of robot workers against their creators that ultimately leads to the extermination of humanity. It was translated into Russian almost simultaneously for a Soviet and a Russian emigre publishing house and appeared in Prague and Moscow in 1924. Both the literal translation and Tolstoi's "adaptation" were simultaneously staged throughout 1924, and for much of the 1920s. Tolstoi (1883-1945) was an important Soviet writer and public figure who spent much of the 1920s in Europe. He is perhaps best known abroad for his two science-fiction works "Aelita" (1923) and "The Garin Death Ray" (1927). With a striking wrapper illustration by S. Kupriianova (according to some catalogs, L. Kupriianova), about whom we are unable to find further information. A rare book, in part due to its fragility. KVK, OCLC only show the copies at the University of New Mexico, Yale, and Waseda (the copy at Berlin is marked a war loss). Not held by the Russian State Library (!); in Russia, we only show the two copies at the Russian National Library (St. Petersburg) and the Russian State Art Library (Moscow).
