        OBSERVATIONS

New York: The Dial Press, 1924. Black cloth and boards, printed paper spine label. Offsetting from a now absent clipping between two pages, a few small rubs to boards, otherwise about fine in the very uncommon foil finish dust jacket, which shows careful restorations at crown and toe of spine, along the front flap fold, and to three creased tears in the lower panel. First edition of Moore's first clothbound book, incorporating the text of her preceding two pamphlets in company with new work and work not hitherto collected. This volume was the recipient of the Dial Award for 1924, an honor accorded only one other poet to that point: T.S. Eliot for THE WASTE LAND. Although the size of the edition is not recorded by the bibliographer, it was no doubt small: the first printing is uncommon in commerce (notably so in dust jacket), and a corrected second printing was required and issued three months after the first. THE WASTE LAND's edition of one thousand copies was exhausted and a second printing appeared in a similar time frame; however, THE WASTE LAND is a common book, and OBSERVATIONS is not. Most likely the first printing did not exceed one thousand copies, and may very well have been smaller. ABBOTT A3.1.

        The Works of Anatole France.

Gabriel Wells, New York 1924 - Finely bound set of the Works of Anatole France. Octavo, 30 volumes bound in full elaborate gold-tooled morocco, gilt topstain, extra-illustrated throughout with original watercolors on the text leaves, each signed "WHD," set number 94 of 575 signed on the limitation page by Anatole France. In near fine condition. A stunning example. Anatole France was a French poet, journalist, and novelist. He was a successful novelist, with several best-sellers. Ironic and skeptical, he was considered the ideal French man of letters. He was a member of the Academie francaise, and won the 1921 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his brilliant literary achievements, characterized as they are by a nobility of style, a profound human sympathy, grace, and a true Gallic temperament". France is also widely believed to be the model for narrator Marcel's literary idol Bergotte in Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

I-II

Longman Hunt Rees Orme Brown & Green, London. 1924. I: Front portrait, (12), xii, 609, (11) pages + 1 plate. II: Front portrait, (6), iv, 663, (17) pages. Regular 8vo. Rebound with new marbled endpapers, half-bound in brown morocco with gilt spine titles, five raised bands and marbled boards, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, original spines bound in. Minor shelf wears and rubbing to the corners. A great set! Numerous engraved text illustrations and vignettes. First edition. Two volumes. "Of the few standard works on the art of printing in the English language, this is perhaps the most familiar. It abounds with information of a very useful character, spiced with conceits manifesting the originality, humour and freshness of the author. The type, never larger than brevier, sometimes is as small as pearl; and the intricacy of the composition evinces the wonderful patience of Johnson. The second volume may be described as practical, in contradiction to the first, which is historical. It gives a description of types, directions for composing, for press, and warehouse work, &c. It is particularly rich in foreign alphabets, a feature which has gained for it great estimation." (Bigmore & Wyman I pp. 371-73).

The Quantum Theory of Radiation. SS. (785)-802. In: Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science. Vol. 47, Sixth Series.

London Taylor & Francis 1924 - (22 x 14,5 cm). VII, 1168 S. Mit zahlreichen Abbildungen und Tafeln. Halbleinwandband der Zeit. Erste Ausgabe. - "The Bohr-Kramers-Slater (BKS) theory was perhaps the final attempt at understanding the interaction of matter and electromagnetic radiation on the basis of the so-called 'Old quantum theory', in which quantum phenomena are treated by imposing quantum restrictions on classically describable behaviour. It was advanced in 1924, and sticks to a classical wave description of the electromagnetic field. It was perhaps more a program than a full physical theory, the ideas that are developed not being worked out in a quantitative way. One aspect, the idea of modelling atomic behaviour under incident electromagnetic radiation using 'virtual oscillators' at the absorption and emission frequencies, rather than the (different) apparent frequencies of the Bohr orbits, significantly led Born, Heisenberg and Kramers to explore mathematics that strongly inspired the subsequent development of matrix mechanics, the first form of modern quantum mechanics. The provocativeness of the theory also generated great discussion and renewed attention to the difficulties in the foundations of the old quantum theory. However, physically the most provocative element of the theory, that momentum and energy would not necessarily be conserved in each interaction but only overall, statistically, was soon shown to be in conflict with experiment" (Wikipedia). - Stempel auf Titel.         Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

Original drawing in pencil and crayon. Titled "Giselle" and "Pavlova" and signed in full by the artist at lower right

1924. The most celebrated dancer of her time, "[Pavlova's] technique was so perfect that it concealed technique. her arabesque and pas de bourrée have rarely been equaled, and... her line was always impeccable... As an interpretive artist Pavlova probably, even today, remains unsurpassed. She was supreme in roles requiring feminine coquetry and light comedy; she excelled in lyrical and poetic roles in which her fluid, expressive arms and hands were remarkable; and she could be deeply moving in dramatic and tragic roles such as Nikia and Giselle. What made her performances unique, however, was not so much her technical mastery or even her talent at characterization; it was the emotion she poured into her performances, her incomparable stage presence - in short, the power of her personality."         Original drawing in pencil and crayon.

What made her performances unique, however, was not so much her technical mastery or even her talent at characterization; it was the emotion she poured into her performances, her incomparable stage presence - in short, the power of her personality." The International Encyclopedia of Dance, Vol. 5, pp. 125-126. Giselle, which Pavlova first danced in 1910, was one of her favourite roles.         TURKEY – STATISTICAL MINING ATLAS: [MADEN IHSAIYATI ATLASI / MINING ATLAS OF TURKEY].

Ankara: Recep Zühdi Matbaas?, [1924]. 1340 - Oblong Small Folio (26 x 38.5 cm / 10 x 15 inches): Collation Complete - 36 maps (35 numbered, 1 unnumbered) each in bi-chrome off-set printing, bound in original salmon-coloured printed wrappers (Good, all maps generally clean and bright, just a few light marginal stains; covers with some reinstated loss at corners and some small closed tears). Extremely Rare – a highly sophisticated statistical mining and mineralogy atlas of the newly-founded Republic of Turkey, one of the earliest ‘Kemalist’ graphic scientific publications, and the first advanced thematic atlas ever produced in the Turkic world, printed in Ottoman Script shortly before that writing system was retired. This extremely rare and surprising statistical mining atlas is one of the most impressive works of Turkish thematic cartography, perfectly embodying the modernist, scientific ethic of the Kemalist regime that established the new Republic of Turkey in 1923, mere months before the present work was issued. The atlas was printed in Ankara for the Turkish Ministry of Trade, which oversaw the country’s mines and quarries, and is the result of an unprecedentedly thorough and accurate scientific assessment of the nation’s abundant mineralogical wealth, done in the effort to support President Kemal Mustafa Atatürk’s ambitions national economic development programme. Significantly, the present work is the first advanced thematic atlas ever created in the Turkic world. The atlas is comprised of 36 sophisticated thematic maps, each based on the same template of a black skeleton map of the republic, divided into its provinces, upon which is over-printed (in colour) the particular thematic information that distinguishes each map. The maps illustrate a variety of themes including the distribution of particular minerals; the locations of mines and quarries; transportation and infrastructure; and the locations of factories and markets. Many of the plates are augmented by graphs that appear below the main map. In spite of the rudimentary nature of their off-set printing, executed in immediate post-war Ankara, the maps are impressively innovative and sophisticated thematic works. In sum, the atlas presents a valuable insight into Turkey’s economy on the eve of its Kemalist restructuring, and into the great value that the new regime placed upon science and cartography. The atlas exclusively employs Ottoman Turkish script and is dated by the Ottoman Rumi Calendar (1340, roughly equivalent to the Gregorian year 1924). In 1927, Atatürk would replace the Ottoman script with the Latin Alphabet, and the Rumi with the Gregorian calendar, as part of his larger programme of Western-style modernizing reforms.         WORLD – GIGANTIC MISSIONARY BANNER MAP: Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be Done on Earth.

New York: Grinnell Litho. Co. for the Missionary Education Movement of the United States and Canada, 150 Fifth Avenue, . 1924 - Chromolithograph on plasticated linen, with original metal-ringed eyelets to corners (Very Good, some light wear and toning along old folds), 102 x 250 cm (40 x 98.5 inches). An apparently unrecorded massive world map, in the form of a banner chromolithographed on cloth, displaying the globe on the newly-devised Goode’s Homolosine Projection, made for the Missionary Education Movement of the United States and Canada, a prominent Christian proselytizing organization. This apparently unrecorded and gargantuan banner map on cloth depicts the World on Goode’s Homolosine Projection, and was published in New York by the Grinnell Litho. Co. for the Missionary Education Movement of the United States and Canada, a prominent Christian proselytizing organization. The map was likely made to grace the organization’s large meetings, as well as the walls of its mission offices across North America and beyond. The map is remarkable cartographically for being one of the very first maps to be published on Goode’s Homolosine Projection, which was copyrighted by the University of Chicago Press only one year before the present map was issued. The projection was developed in 1923 by the geographer, Professor John Paul Goode, who endeavored to create a global projection that created less abstraction than the ubiquitous Mercator projection. Instead of dividing the world into the traditional double hemispheres, Goode placed interruptions in the North and South Atlantic, the South Pacific, the Indian ocean, and the East-West Meridian. The consequent ‘orange-peel’ shape allowed certain land masses, such as Greenland and eastern Russia, to be displayed uninterrupted, as well as better representing the scale of terrestrial areas at differing latitudes. Otherwise, the map depicts the international political boundaries as they appeared between the World Wars, with a large British Empire upon which the sun never set.         When We Were Very Young.

London: Methuen & Co., 1924 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, rule and stamped illustrations to front and back boards gilt, titles to spine gilt, top edge gilt. Spine tips and corners lightly rubbed and bumped, small gift inscription to front free endpaper, small owner's name to half title, a clean, bright copy. Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. First edition, first impression. The first and the scarcest of the four Pooh books with an initial print run of 5,175 regular trade copies. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286). [Attributes: First Edition]
