Original drawing in pencil and crayon. Titled "Giselle" and "Pavlova" and signed in full by the artist at lower right

1924. The most celebrated dancer of her time, "[Pavlova's] technique was so perfect that it concealed technique. her arabesque and pas de bourrée have rarely been equaled, and... her line was always impeccable... As an interpretive artist Pavlova probably, even today, remains unsurpassed. She was supreme in roles requiring feminine coquetry and light comedy; she excelled in lyrical and poetic roles in which her fluid, expressive arms and hands were remarkable; and she could be deeply moving in dramatic and tragic roles such as Nikia and Giselle. What made her performances unique, however, was not so much her technical mastery or even her talent at characterization; it was the emotion she poured into her performances, her incomparable stage presence - in short, the power of her personality." The International Encyclopedia of Dance, Vol. 5, pp. 125-126. Giselle, which Pavlova first danced in 1910, was one of her favourite roles. She performed it in 1924 at Covent Garden during her 4-week season there. It is quite likely that the present drawing was executed at that time. Laura Knight, the first female artist to be elected to full membership in the Royal Academy, is well-recognized for her work in the genre of ballet.. Sheet size 355 mm. x 217 mm. (14" x 8.5"). On laid paper. With an additional sketch of a dancer, signed by the artist but untitled, to verso. Provenance: Alister Mathews, art dealer in Bournemouth, England Some paper restoration to margins; numerous small light blue watercolour paint spots.

TURKEY – STATISTICAL MINING ATLAS: [MADEN IHSAIYATI ATLASI / MINING ATLAS OF TURKEY].

Ankara: Recep Zühdi Matbaas?, [1924]. 1340 - Oblong Small Folio (26 x 38.5 cm / 10 x 15 inches): Collation Complete - 36 maps (35 numbered, 1 unnumbered) each in bi-chrome off-set printing, bound in original salmon-coloured printed wrappers (Good, all maps generally clean and bright, just a few light marginal stains; covers with some reinstated loss at corners and some small closed tears). Extremely Rare – a highly sophisticated statistical mining and mineralogy atlas of the newly-founded Republic of Turkey, one of the earliest ‘Kemalist’ graphic scientific publications, and the first advanced thematic atlas ever produced in the Turkic world, printed in Ottoman Script shortly before that writing system was retired. This extremely rare and surprising statistical mining atlas is one of the most impressive works of Turkish thematic cartography, perfectly embodying the modernist, scientific ethic of the Kemalist regime that established the new Republic of Turkey in 1923, mere months before the present work was issued. The atlas was printed in Ankara for the Turkish Ministry of Trade, which oversaw the country’s mines and quarries, and is the result of an unprecedentedly thorough and accurate scientific assessment of the nation’s abundant mineralogical wealth, done in the effort to support President Kemal Mustafa Atatürk’s ambitions national economic development programme. Significantly, the present work is the first advanced thematic atlas ever created in the Turkic world. The atlas is comprised of 36 sophisticated thematic maps, each based on the same template of a black skeleton map of the republic, divided into its provinces, upon which is over-printed (in colour) the particular thematic information that distinguishes each map. The maps illustrate a variety of themes including the distribution of particular minerals; the locations of mines and quarries; transportation and infrastructure; and the locations of factories and markets. Many of the plates are augmented by graphs that appear below the main map. In spite of the rudimentary nature of their off-set printing, executed in immediate post-war Ankara, the maps are impressively innovative and sophisticated thematic works. In sum, the atlas presents a valuable insight into Turkey’s economy on the eve of its Kemalist restructuring, and into the great value that the new regime placed upon science and cartography. The atlas exclusively employs Ottoman Turkish script and is dated by the Ottoman Rumi Calendar (1340, roughly equivalent to the Gregorian year 1924). In 1927, Atatürk would replace the Ottoman script with the Latin Alphabet, and the Rumi with the Gregorian calendar, as part of his larger programme of Western-style modernizing reforms.         WORLD – GIGANTIC MISSIONARY BANNER MAP: Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be Done on Earth.

New York: Grinnell Litho. Co. for the Missionary Education Movement of the United States and Canada, 150 Fifth Avenue, . 1924 - Chromolithograph on plasticated linen, with original metal-ringed eyelets to corners (Very Good, some light wear and toning along old folds), 102 x 250 cm (40 x 98.5 inches). An apparently unrecorded massive world map, in the form of a banner chromolithographed on cloth, displaying the globe on the newly-devised Goode’s Homolosine Projection, made for the Missionary Education Movement of the United States and Canada, a prominent Christian proselytizing organization. This apparently unrecorded and gargantuan banner map on cloth depicts the World on Goode’s Homolosine Projection, and was published in New York by the Grinnell Litho. Co. for the Missionary Education Movement of the United States and Canada, a prominent Christian proselytizing organization. The map was likely made to grace the organization’s large meetings, as well as the walls of its mission offices across North America and beyond. The map is remarkable cartographically for being one of the very first maps to be published on Goode’s Homolosine Projection, which was copyrighted by the University of Chicago Press only one year before the present map was issued. The projection was developed in 1923 by the geographer, Professor John Paul Goode, who endeavored to create a global projection that created less abstraction than the ubiquitous Mercator projection. Instead of dividing the world into the traditional double hemispheres, Goode placed interruptions in the North and South Atlantic, the South Pacific, the Indian ocean, and the East-West Meridian. The consequent ‘orange-peel’ shape allowed certain land masses, such as Greenland and eastern Russia, to be displayed uninterrupted, as well as better representing the scale of terrestrial areas at differing latitudes. Otherwise, the map depicts the international political boundaries as they appeared between the World Wars, with a large British Empire upon which the sun never set.         When We Were Very Young.

London: Methuen & Co., 1924 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, rule and stamped illustrations to front and back boards gilt, titles to spine gilt, top edge gilt. Spine tips and corners lightly rubbed and bumped, small gift inscription to front free endpaper, small owner's name to half title, a clean, bright copy. Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. First edition, first impression. The first and the scarcest of the four Pooh books with an initial print run of 5,175 regular trade copies. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286). [Attributes: First Edition]

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

        The Eleventh Virgin

Albert and Charles Boni, New York 1924 - 312, [i]p., first edition, first printing, original blue cloth with minor edge wear and slight bumping of corners, spine lettering slightly dulled, previous owner's name (Martha Lauz) on front free endpaper in light pencil, minor crease to title page, a few pages printed slightly off-center, overall in very good condition. Autobiographical novel by the founder of the Catholic Worker movement, written at the age of 26 in the midst of an already tumultuous life before her conversion to Catholic pacifism. She regretted its publication and later sought to reclaim every copy she could find. Beginning from childhood, the novel incorporates Day's education and activism, experiences working at the Socialist Daily, the New York Call and the Masses (re-titled "The Flame" in the book), and deeply personal affairs including a portrait of Floyd Dell (as Hugh Brace), an account of an abortion, and a final monologue in which the central character realizes that her political activities and modern womanhood have distracted her from her truer goal of loving a man and becoming a mother. Walter Rideout lists this as one of three novels by "tired radicals" in the 1920s, placing it midway along Day's journey "From Union Square to Rome," as she described her path in an essay about her conversion. In his recent introduction to the book, Paul Bowers cites a passage from William Miller's autobiography describing Dorothy Day's feelings about the book half a century after its publication, in 1975: "She held out one book and asked, 'What should I do about this?' I knew the book. It was The Eleventh Virgin, her autobiographical novel. 'It's all true,' she said. It was a book I knew that she hated and would have rejoiced if every copy could have been consumed in flames and then be forever put out of her mind. But now she stood there, holding out to me one of the few copies left. I said nothing. Dorothy was controlled, but I could tell by the pale, taut look in her face that the business of turning all of this material over to me was a moment of great stress and pain for her. She was, in a way, confronting history." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Suudlus lumme (Kiss into the Snow) [Poetry Collection]

Sõnavara, Tartu 1924 - Estonian language. Octavo 13 x 18 cm. Weight 170 g. Wrappers, 103 [1] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Cover corners are slightly worn, restored upper left corner of back cover (minor piece was broken off), closed tear to the upper left edge of front cover along the spine (about 9 cm long), occasional minor rubbing on front cover, few light foxing spots and fingerprints on the back cover; internally finely preserved. Valmar Adams (1899-1993) (wrote under the pseudonyms Vilmar Adams) was a poet, prosaist, editor, literary scholar and researcher of Russian literature and Russian-Estonian literary relationships. In 1924 he entered with aplomb Estonia's literary scene from the Russian poetry parnassus with present debut verses collection, which had created a furore. Given his interest in Russian literature, it is unsurprising that one of Adams’ primary poetic influences seen here was Russian modernist poetry - pretentious intellectual urban verses with excessive mannerism and spiritual provocations. He concentrated on the internal, subjective “I,” focusing on feelings of loneliness and romantic yearnings. His verse structure was multifaceted, as were the innovations of his rhyme and experiments in melodic instrumentation. With current verses collection he brought a near rhyme into Estonian poetry, which theoretical justification was presented in his thesis "Riim" (Rhyme, 1925). Thesis declared that using of perfect rhyme had ceased to be an art, and promoted an imperfect rhyme, because it had became consistent with the passage of time. Such statement as well as other author's literary activities caused scandal and critics. Another scandal associated with current poetry book arose because of its dedication "G. S. - Teie mehelisele võluvusele", which was addressed to poet Gustav Suits and "his masculine charm". Several critics interpreted this phrase as Adams' statement about his homosexuality. Book's amazing modernist cover design is Wiiralt's debut work in the field of book graphics, who, according to his bibliographer, also was not detected in relationships with women. Eduard Wiiralt (1898–1954) the most famous Estonian graphic artist with unique and easily recognisable style, which could be characterized as combination of grotesque and surrealism.         Original drawing in pencil and crayon. Titled "Giselle" and "Pavlova" and signed in full by the artist at lower right

1924 - Sheet size 355 mm. x 217 mm. (14" x 8.5"). On laid paper. With an additional sketch of a dancer, signed by the artist but untitled, to verso. Provenance:Alister Mathews, art dealer in Bournemouth, EnglandSome paper restoration to margins; numerous small light blue watercolour paint spots. The most celebrated dancer of her time, "[Pavlova's] technique was so perfect that it concealed technique. her arabesque and pas de bourrée have rarely been equaled, and. her line was always impeccable. Laura Knight, the first female artist to be elected to full membership in the Royal Academy, is well-recognized for her work in the genre of ballet. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[Women][Horses][California] Photo Album of Horses, Horse Shows and Parades.

Mostly Southern California. 1924 to 1947. 11” x 15”. String tied full leather over boards. 98 pages with 454 mostly black and white photographs; 85% are inserted into corner mounts, the rest are taped at the corners. Most photos measure from 3½” x 2½” to 3½” x 5½” and most are captioned. Album good: leather of both boards heavily worn and separated at edges exposing padding and boards underneath; photos generally near fine and around 125 are lacking. This is the photo album of Virginia Jeanne Rankin Wrenshall Jackson, a Southern California horse enthusiast who went on to be a well-known award-winning breeder and exhibitor of American Saddlebreds on the California horse show circuit. The earliest pictures in this huge album show Jeanne when she was 5 years old in 1924, just one year after she moved from her native Hawaii to live with her grandmother. The majority of the pictures are from the mid-late 1930s and the name written in the album (as well as many of the captions) is “Jeanne Rankin”. She may have been a bit of a rebel as she apparently eloped: to marry Robert Rankin, she went to Yuma, Arizona and signed a sworn statement that she was 19 (she was 16) , to apply for a marriage license. There are numerous shots of Jeanne with named horses as well as a fair amount showing adults decked out in Western gear showing their steeds. There are shots of rodeos, horses performing, and visits to stables, breeders and farms. At least 30 photos show parades including several that show Jeanne leading the parade. Images here include the 1936 and 1937 El Monte Pioneer Days Parade, the Santa Barbara Fiesta Parade, and the City of Asuza's 50th anniversary parade in 1937. An exhaustive assemblage depicting the early years of an accomplished horsewoman. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers.         Eesti Kunstnikkude Rühm : Esimene Balti riikidewaheline kunstinäitus : Tartus - Tallinnas jaanuar-veebruar 1924 (Group of Estonian Artists : The First Joint Baltic Art Exhibition : Tartu-Tallinn January-Vebruary, 1924) [Exhibition Catalog]

Eesti Kunstnikkude Rühm, Võru 1924 - Estonian language. Octavo 11 x 14 cm. Weight 20 g. Wrappers, [23] pp. The book is in Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Very soft crease across bottom corner of front and back cover. Present the first joint exhibition of most important avant-garde groups in Estonian and Latvian art - Group of Riga Artists and Estonian Artists Group, was opened on January 6th in Tartu and on February 23th in Tallinn. Trying to develop international relations Estonian side headed by Jaan Vahtra had proposed to Latvians to organize joint exhibition focused on Cubism and Constructivism, and received an acceptance. But the Ministry of Education declined to fund an exhibition by the reason it was organized outside the Central Union of Estonian Visual Artists. That's why exhibition organizers had faced with funding problems. It was agreed to arrange the exhibition at the expense of the participants, so that earnings by artworks selling would had cover the expenses. An event acting organizers became Jaan Vahtra, Juhan Raudsepp and Eduard Ole in Tartu, Märt Laarman in Tallinn, also Latvians Romans Süta, Leo Svemps and Uga Skulme. It is worth noting that, current catalog published for an exhibition was the first appeared in Estonia illustrated art exhibition catalog. It includes 17 full-page reproductions. According to the catalog, on display were 134 works in the fields of painting, graphics and sculpture (in Tallinn were 141, because had added 7 works by Laarman) by 16 most important avant-garde artists of both states. Among participants were most important representatives of Estonian Artists' Group - Eduard Ole, Friedrich Hist, Jaan Vahtra, sculptor Juhan Raudsepp, and prominent artists of Riga Group - Uga & Otto Skulme, Roman Suta, Konrad Uban, Sigismund Vidberg, Aleksandra Belcova and others. Although such kind of exhibition was the first to be held in Estonia, there had't been as much interest shown by the public, as organizers supposed. Exhibition attended almost 3000 visitors in both cities during three weeks while an exhibition was on view. Total artworks purchase amount was also quite low and even had not covered organizational costs. The most expensive art pieces sold were works by Uga Skulme, Jaan Vahtra and Märt Laarman. Although the innovation art movement The Group of Estonian Artists (established in 1923) most active creative period had lasted only several years because of poor economic situation, many outstanding cubist-geometrical works were created in the fields of painting, graphic arts, stage arts and sculpture, and it had a fundamental importance in the further development of Estonian art.         FAIRY TALES by Hans Andersen

New York George H. Doran [1924] - First American edition. With 12 very fine tipped-in color plates, numerous black & white illustrations as frontispieces to each tale and additional decoration throughout all by Kay Nielsen. 4to, in the original black cloth featuring a black, matallic silver, and orange pictorial pastedown on the upper cover, the spine lettered and decorated in silver, with decorative endpapers. 280pp. A very fine copy, internally as pristine and perfect as new, the cloth very bright and fresh with no fading or wear, the upper pastedown pristine, the silver lettering and decorations on the spine with some flaking as is unfortunately the norm. FIRST EDITION OF THE QUARTO PRINTING. This collection of sixteen tales was initiated by Nielsen in 1912, though it was not published until 1924. Andersen's beloved tales were an excellent inspiration for Nielsen who produced some of his finest images for this title. Sixteen of Andersen's tales are included. Interestingly, 'The Little Mermaid' is not included among them. In 1937 Nielsen went to work for Walt Disney. He was renowned at the Disney studio for his concept art, and he contributed artwork for many Disney films. Around 1940 he produced concept paintings for a proposed adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Mermaid'. The film, however, was not made within Nielsen's lifetime. The paintings however would remain with the study for over 40 years and did not go unused, they provided much of the look and style of Disney's 1989 film. That film is given credit for breathing life back into the art of animated feature films and remains one of the studios most popular features to date. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Marble Faun.

Boston: The Four Seas Company,, 1924. Octavo. Original mottled green boards, white paper title labels to front board and spine printed in green. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Front hinge starting, small production flaw to rear hinge, small tear to the top of the front joint of the jacket, but a stunning copy of a famously vulnerable publication. First edition, sole printing, presentation copy of Faulkner's first book. This copy has been inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To Dink Cearley from Bill Faulkner" and also signed and dated 31 December 1924 on the title page. C. L. ("Dink") Cearley was in 1924 the 19-year-old son of Abb W. Cearley (69 years old, married at age 36) and Mollie Cearley. Abb was the jailor in Oxford, Mississippi, and would probably have been elected to that position. Abb and Mollie were both born in Mississippi, as were all four of their parents. The Cearley family (including several siblings) lived on the premises of the jail. In 1931 there is a record of a minor ($2) payment to a Mr Woodward "in the Dink Cearley Case" and there are occasional references to Cearley Service Station, but otherwise the family seems to have lived quietly. The fact that Faulkner uses the familiar form of his own forename suggests that he was on easy terms with the younger Dink. Faulkner employed the unusual forename for the character Dink Quistenberry in The Town, who marries into the Snopes family and runs the Jefferson (formerly Snopes) Hotel. The Marble Faun is the author's first book, of which only 500 of the projected 1,000 copies were printed and some 300 of those were later pulped. The official publication date was, after some delay, fixed as 15 December 1924 and the earliest dated presentation copies were signed on the 19th.

Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens From the Little White Bird

London: Hodder & Stoughton Limited. Hardcover. Good. No date. 126 p. 49 plates of beautiful illustrations by Arthur Rackham (frontispiece missing), title vignette, headpieces and tailpieces. Green cloth. Spots on covers. Inscription on front free endpaper, including date 1924. J. M. Barrie's achievements include popularizing the name Wendy, inspired by a child's mispronunciation of the word, "friendly." His character Peter Pan has a tragic inspiration, for Barrie's brother died young, never to grow up. The illustrator for this edition, Arthur Rackham, was one of the great book illustrators during the golden age of illustration.

Conversations in Ebury Street. [With an interesting full-page manuscript letter by George Moore, written in ink into the book verso titlepage].

New York, Boni and Liveright, Inc. 1924 - Sprache: English Second edition. 14.5 x 21.5cm. 315 pages. Original hardcover with spine label. Deckled edges. With a fantastic, full-page, signed message written inside the book by George Moore. Very good - condition of the binding with signs of external wear (some spotting). Moore responds in his manuscript note on the halftitle possibly to the request of Frieda Lawrence, wife of D.H.Lawrence, who requested a copy of Moore's book "The Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe". Moore sent her instead this edition. George Moore (1852 - 1933) was an Irish novelist, short-story writer, poet, art critic, memoirist and dramatist. Moore came from a Roman Catholic landed family who lived at Moore Hall in Carra, County Mayo. He originally wanted to be a painter, and studied art in Paris during the 1870s. There, he befriended many of the leading French artists and writers of the day. As a naturalistic writer, he was amongst the first English-language authors to absorb the lessons of the French realists, and was particularly influenced by the works of Émile Zola. His writings influenced James Joyce, according to the literary critic and biographer Richard Ellmann, and, although Moore's work is sometimes seen as outside the mainstream of both Irish and British literature, he is as often regarded as the first great modern Irish novelist. George Moore's family had lived in Moore Hall, near Lough Carra, County Mayo for almost a century. The house was built by his paternal great-grandfather-also called George Moore-who had made his fortune as a wine merchant in Alicante. The novelist's grandfather was a friend of Maria Edgeworth, and author of An Historical Memoir of the French Revolution. Ebury Street in Belgravia was where Moore lived when he was in London. This copy of "Conversations in Ebury Street" contains a full-page, signed message written inside the book by George Moore. Moore responds in his manuscript note to the request of a Mrs. Lawrence (possibly Frieda Lawrence, wife of D.H.Lawrence), who requested a copy of Moore's book The Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe. Moore sent her instead this edition.

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.
