Later Poems [together with] Plays in Prose and Verse.

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1922. Two works, octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt to spines, blind panelling designed by Ricketts to front boards, unicorn design to pastedowns. Spines faded, cloth somewhat mottled and stained, very light rubbing to some extremities, internally fresh and uncut, a very good set in spite of the unfortunate marking. First editions, first impression, both titles inscribed by the author on the front free endpapers, "S. D. Green from W B Yeats Oct 16 1928". These UK editions precede the Macmillan's US editions by two years, and are very scarce inscribed. These two collections bring together very nicely the poetry from the middle of Yeats's career (from The Wind Among the Reeds, 1899, to Michael Robartes and the Dancer, 1921) and his Abbey Theatre plays. Intriguingly, Yeats had already inscribed these same two volumes in the year of publication to another recipient - the inscriptions, above those to Green, are scribbled out but still legible, "Mrs Woodmass from W B Yeats Nov 16 1922". Edith Woodmass was his wife George's grandmother, who died in 1927. This would explain the reinscription of these copies, which have nonetheless been together since the date of publication.

      - Warsaw, F. Hoesicki and J. Zawadzki in Vilnius, 1922. 8vo. Contemporary linen-backed cloth-covered boards, illustrated front wrapper bound in; pp. 72, [4, advertisements] 32 photogravure plates on 16 leaves, printed on both sides, photographic frontispiece on verso of half-title, illustration after a photo pasted in at the end as tailpiece; shelfmark stamped in black on spine and in ink at foot of half-title; otherwise a very good copy. First edition, very rare. This pictorial record of and essay on Vilnius was published when the city was under Polish administration. The master photographer of Poland of the first half of the 20th century was Jan Bulhak. In 1912 he opened his own studio in Vilnius and lectured at the University where he soon became the head of the Institute of Photography in the department of fine arts (1919 - 1939). In 1927, he helped to found the Wilno Photo-Club as well as the Polish Photo-Club in 1929, of which he was also chairman. Just before the outbreak of the Second World War he presented his entire collection to the Polish State and during a German bombardment about 30,000 negatives were destroyed. The author Henryk Moscicki was a professor for modern Polish and Eastern European History, with a focus on Polish-Lithuanian relations in the 19th century. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Washington and the Riddle of Peace.

The Macmillan Company, New York 1922 - First edition. Octavo, original cloth, gilt titles to the spine. Boldly signed by H.G. Wells on the half-title page. In fine condition. Scarce and desirable signed. In the wake of World War I, the victor nations came together to shape the postwar era. and in doing so, laid the ground for the next great war. That was already obvious in 1921, when H. G. Wells gathered in one volume his essays for the New York World, the Chicago Tribune, and other American and European newspapers written in reaction to what he saw and heard at the Washington Conference to organize the peace. Though known, along with Jules Verne, as one of the 19th-century fathers of science fiction, here Wells explores more down-to-earth issues, from the "problem" of Russia and Japan-and how little could hope to be accomplished at this conference without their participation-to the "economic decadence" of the world and how to arrest it. Wells' intriguing foresight shines through, making this a fascinating document of the international disaster of the World Wars. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Havens on the rear wrapper, his name neatly inked on the front wrap, two strategically placed Scarlet Mask "stickers" (difficult to notice unless you know they weren't issued thus). He has played a wide variety of the parts, and the scope and versatility of his work is unique. It is unlikely that his record as a Gilbert and Sullivan artiste will ever be surpassed."       - ~i~Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, c. 1922. Plain brown and grey military-style cloth covered albums (cloth-backed boards), photos slotted into card mounts; a little wear to bindings, numerous mounting cards loosened; photos (several repeats, most measuring 54 x 78 mm), very sharp and generally in good condition. In 1922 the the Colonial rulers of Sudan, previously Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, had decided that a new railway from Kassala to Thamian on the Port Sudan railway was necessary for the export of Sudanese high-quality cotton to Britain, especially from the valuable rain lands of the Baraka valley. The Kassala Railway Company Ltd. was incorporated in 1922 and in this large collection of photos the newly-built railway station of Thamian is depicted several times, as well as military units, camel and horse carts, only one automobile, views of Port Sudan, Nile steamers, railway carriages, the Gordon of Khartoum statue in its original locations, street scenes, etc. - A good photographic collection of a sparsely documented region.       Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1922. First edition, later printing of what many consider Kipling's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth, embossed black and gilt to the front panel, gilt titles to the spine, illustrated. Signed by Rudyard Kipling on the title page. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Kim unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game, the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel made the term "Great Game" popular and introduced the theme of great power rivalry and intrigue. It is set after the Second Afghan War which ended in 1881, but before the Third, probably in the period 1893 to 1898. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people, culture, and varied religions of India. "The book presents a vivid picture of India, its teeming populations, religions, and superstitions, and the life of the bazaars and the road." Considered by many to be Kipling's masterpiece, opinion appears varied about its consideration as children's literature or not. Roger Sale, in his history of children's literature, concludes "Kim is the apotheosis of the Victorian cult of childhood, but it shines now as bright as ever, long after the Empire's collapse." Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003 the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel."

        The Rescue.

Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Page and Company, 1922. First edition, early printing of this later Conrad work. Octavo, original blue cloth, gilt stamped to the front panel, gilt titles to the spine, frontispiece. Boldly inscribed by Joseph Conrad on the front free endpaper. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Conrad's The Rescue was one of the last novels to be published before his death four years later. It is now sometimes called the 'Lingard Trilogy', a group of novels based on Conrad's experience as mate on the steamer Vidar. Although it was the last of the three novels to be published, after Almayer's Folly (1895) and An Outcast of the Islands (1896), the events related in the novel precede those. The story follows Captain Tom Lingard, the recurring protagonist of The Lingard Trilogy, who was on his way to help a native friend regain his land when he falls in love with a married woman whose yacht he saves from foundering.

        The White Feather

A C Black 1922 - You may well look at this listing and think I have gone mad which is half true . As with every author some titles are rare and that is the case here. This is the first full wrapper that I am aware of and the first one I have seen .The wrapper has three creases where it has been folded and placed in the book and there have been two small chip restorations on the spine .I think the print run would have been 500.This wrapper is identical to the US Macmillan first except for the 2/6 on the back panel and A C Black is replaced by Macmillan. For those of you who have a copy of Mcilvaine youll see that the image listed under the scans is probably the rarest Wodehouse item that has survived as its the 1907 Macmillan true first . I think there were about 200 sets of sheets sent to the States to establish copyright and I doubt very much that there was a wrapper and if there was it would almost certainly have been the Black edition. This particular issue illustrated throughout with typographic designs and photos of the abstract compositions by Rodchenko; Kuleshov's article on the chamber cinema; Dziga Vertov's articles on Kino-Pravda; numerous letterpress designs. Photography and cinema were both still very new and exciting for a new emerging audience. To add to that photomontage pictures, avant-garde layouts, unusual types and all other elements Kino-Fot was on the very edge of design and influenced the creative flow of 1920s.

Europa : ein Zyklus von 14 Steinzeichnungen

München : Georg Müller, [1922]. Edition limited to 300 hand-numbered examples (this is no. 17). Portfolio, large square folio, original printed papered boards (bowed, foxed and with some staining); the preliminaries comprise two loose double sheets (lightly creased and foxed): pp [1 title], [1 blank], [1 contents], [1 colophon], [2 blank], [2 intoductory text]; followed by [14] loose lithographs, each 315 x 420 mm (sheets 460 x 540 mm), all signed by the artist in pencil beneath the image, original owner's pencilled titles in French to the upper margins; most of the lithographs with minor water staining along left edge of sheet (nos. 13 and 14 with heavier staining; nos. 1 and 14 with short edge tears); complete. Theo Scharf (1899-1987) was born in Melbourne, the son of a German-born concert pianist and an Australian mother. In 1911 Violet Teague painted his portrait (Boy with a palette), at a time when he was a young prodigy and his artistic work was being recognised by Teague, McCubbin and others. Before leaving for Germany in 1914 he held a highly successful exhibition in Melbourne. In Germany Scharf based himself in Munich. Two of his best known works date from the early Weimar period. They are his series of lithographs, Europa (1922), of which the Australian War Memorial holds the only complete portfolio in Australian collections; and a series of etchings titled Night in a city, which were published the following year. The latter featured in an exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (April-May 2006). In the 1930s Scharf contributed to several newspapers and journals produced by the Nazi Party, and during the Second World War he enlisted as an official German 'combat artist'. After the war Scharf returned to Melbourne and worked as an art teacher for several years during the 1950s, before spending the last period of his life in Munich. "Europa comprises fourteen 'lithographic designs' numbered in the following order: Das schlafende Asien (Sleeping Asia), Tyrannei (Tyranny), Revolution, Napoleon, Industrialismus (Industrialism), Entgötterung (Turning from God), Demagogie (Demagogy), Japan, Kapitalismus (Capitalism), Krieg (War), Proletariat, Asiens Entflammung (Asia aflame), Zivilisation (Civilisation), Das Ende (The end). The portfolio was released in an edition of 300 and produced in the spring of 1922 at the Dr C Wolf & Sohn printing office in Munich for Georg Müller Verlag. Scharf's imagery is uncompromising and portentous as he lashed out against the madness and greed which had brought Europe close to collapse as a result of rapacious warmongering. Industrialism, with its pollution and exploitation of the proletariat, is featured in many of these images: soaring chimneys spewing smoke and 'demonic steam' and workers bent slavishly over their task at hand; civilisation is seen as an overcrowded metropolis, the seething mass of humanity is crowded into the factories and offices, pressing the heaving streets of the cities. It is an apocalyptic vision, denying the celebration of modernity espoused by the Futurist artists, and presaging the carnage and horrors of the war yet to come." (Natalie Wilson, in Theo Scharf : Night in a city, AGNSW, 2006, p.35)

Berlin, 1903-1922. - 8°. In Jugenstilpostkartenalbum. London: Edward Arnold, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. First Impression of Aston's key work on isotopes, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1922. 8vo: viii,152pp, with 4 halftone plates and numerous tables and line drawings in the text. Publisher's original dark blue cloth, covers paneled in blind, spine lettered in gilt. A beautiful copy, uncommon in such nice condition. Fine, except for light offsetting to end papers and slightly bumped spine ends. Appears unread. Judging from auction records, never issued in dust jacket. Norman 77. PMM 412. Gillispie, pp. 320-22. Aston, building on the work of J. J. Thomson at Cambridge, developed modern mass spectrograph technology to investigate inconsistencies in the atomic weights of elements, discovering that "the elements are composed of atoms of varying mass, the atomic weight of an element being the average of those atoms comprising it?. [Frederick] Soddy had coined the term isotopes for elements that are 'homogenous in chemical behaviour'. Thus, for example, no process of chemical analysis will differentiate between thorium, one form of uranium, and ionium, although each has a different atomic weight. Aston carried this investigation one very important stage further by demonstrating that similar conditions occur within the elements themselves [eventually identifying 212 naturally occurring isotopes by analyzing all but three of the non-radioactive elements in the periodic table.]. . . . The ultimate consequences of these discrepancies are far-reaching. The ration between hydrogen and oxygen is not 4:1, as it 'should be', but rather less; which means that when four atoms of hydrogen are transformed into one helium atom some matter is annihilated. In fact this is an example of the interchangeability between mass and energy which is postulated in Einstein's General Theory of Relativity" (PMM 412). Aston's "work on isotopes also led to his formulation of the whole number rule which states that 'the mass of the oxygen isotope being defined [as 16], all the other isotopes have masses that are very nearly whole numbers,' a rule that was used extensively in the development of nuclear energy." (ODNB) "Aston's achievements were kept continually before the scientific public by revised editions of his excellent book Isotopes. The included . . . a clear forecast of the power and dangers of harnassed atomic energy." (Gillispie) N. B.         Beautiful and Damned, The

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-. True First Printing (without the publisher's seal on the copyright page or the concluding advertisements on pp. 451-452 of later printings) of the author's second novel. 8vo; [10], 449, [1]pp. Publisher's dark blue-green linen-like cloth, the spine lettered gilt, the upper cover blind-stamped with the title and author, the fore-edge untrimmed. A just about Fine copy (lacking the dust jacket), save for offsetting to the end papers and faintly discernible pencil erasures to the front fly leaf. Bruccoli A8.1.a. The Beautiful and Damned, in cut and edited form, first appeared in seven installments in Metropolitan magazine, from September 1921 to March 1922. The book, according to Bruccoli, came out on 4 March 1922, in a first impression of 20,600 copies. It went through two more printings that year, for a total of 50,000 copies. After the spectacular success of Fitzgerald's first novel, This Side of Paradise (1920), he struck out in a new direction, presenting in The Beautiful and Damned a more sparing, focused narrative, relying largely on an omniscient narrator. "Its style," according to the Literary Encyclopedia, "moves towards that integration of romantic and modernist elements which will come to such dazzling fruition in his next novel, The Great Gatsby." Very interesting piece reflecting on the depression that hit Germany and many other countries in postwar Europe. As written on the bill, the price for the work was 30,000 German Reichsmark!!!
