        [CONSTRUCTIVIST CLASSICS] Kino-Fot [i.e. Film-Photo]. Issue #2 of only 6. 8-15 of September, 1922

St. Petersburg: Kini-Fot, 1922. 16 pp.: phot.,. 28x22 cm. Original photomontage wrappers by Alexander Rodchenko who used his wife Varvara Stepanova's photomontage which juxtaposed a photo of Charlie Chaplin with photos of industrial objects. Very good/near fine condition. A few pale stains on the front cover. One of 8000 copies. First edition. Extremely rare periodical, especially in without damages, in almost mint condition. The legendary magazine, the core of Gan-RodchenkoStepanova collaboration. This particular issue illustrated throughout with typographic designs and photos of the abstract compositions by Rodchenko; Kuleshov's article on the chamber cinema; Dziga Vertov's articles on Kino-Pravda; numerous letterpress designs. Photography and cinema were both still very new and exciting for a new emerging audience. To add to that photomontage pictures, avant-garde layouts, unusual types and all other elements Kino-Fot was on the very edge of design and influenced the creative flow of 1920s.

Europa : ein Zyklus von 14 Steinzeichnungen

München : Georg Müller, [1922]. Edition limited to 300 hand-numbered examples (this is no. 17). Portfolio, large square folio, original printed papered boards (bowed, foxed and with some staining); the preliminaries comprise two loose double sheets (lightly creased and foxed): pp [1 title], [1 blank], [1 contents], [1 colophon], [2 blank], [2 intoductory text]; followed by [14] loose lithographs, each 315 x 420 mm (sheets 460 x 540 mm), all signed by the artist in pencil beneath the image, original owner's pencilled titles in French to the upper margins; most of the lithographs with minor water staining along left edge of sheet (nos. 13 and 14 with heavier staining; nos. 1 and 14 with short edge tears); complete. Theo Scharf (1899-1987) was born in Melbourne, the son of a German-born concert pianist and an Australian mother. In 1911 Violet Teague painted his portrait (Boy with a palette), at a time when he was a young prodigy and his artistic work was being recognised by Teague, McCubbin and others. Before leaving for Germany in 1914 he held a highly successful exhibition in Melbourne. In Germany Scharf based himself in Munich. Two of his best known works date from the early Weimar period. They are his series of lithographs, Europa (1922), of which the Australian War Memorial holds the only complete portfolio in Australian collections; and a series of etchings titled Night in a city, which were published the following year. The latter featured in an exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (April-May 2006). In the 1930s Scharf contributed to several newspapers and journals produced by the Nazi Party, and during the Second World War he enlisted as an official German 'combat artist'. After the war Scharf returned to Melbourne and worked as an art teacher for several years during the 1950s, before spending the last period of his life in Munich. "Europa comprises fourteen 'lithographic designs' numbered in the following order: Das schlafende Asien (Sleeping Asia), Tyrannei (Tyranny), Revolution, Napoleon, Industrialismus (Industrialism), Entgötterung (Turning from God), Demagogie (Demagogy), Japan, Kapitalismus (Capitalism), Krieg (War), Proletariat, Asiens Entflammung (Asia aflame), Zivilisation (Civilisation), Das Ende (The end). The portfolio was released in an edition of 300 and produced in the spring of 1922 at the Dr C Wolf & Sohn printing office in Munich for Georg Müller Verlag. Scharf's imagery is uncompromising and portentous as he lashed out against the madness and greed which had brought Europe close to collapse as a result of rapacious warmongering. Industrialism, with its pollution and exploitation of the proletariat, is featured in many of these images: soaring chimneys spewing smoke and 'demonic steam' and workers bent slavishly over their task at hand; civilisation is seen as an overcrowded metropolis, the seething mass of humanity is crowded into the factories and offices, pressing the heaving streets of the cities. It is an apocalyptic vision, denying the celebration of modernity espoused by the Futurist artists, and presaging the carnage and horrors of the war yet to come." (Natalie Wilson, in Theo Scharf : Night in a city, AGNSW, 2006, p.35)

        Isotopes

London: Edward Arnold, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. First Impression of Aston's key work on isotopes, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1922. 8vo: viii,152pp, with 4 halftone plates and numerous tables and line drawings in the text. Publisher's original dark blue cloth, covers paneled in blind, spine lettered in gilt. A beautiful copy, uncommon in such nice condition. Fine, except for light offsetting to end papers and slightly bumped spine ends. Appears unread. Judging from auction records, never issued in dust jacket. Norman 77. PMM 412. Gillispie, pp. 320-22. Aston, building on the work of J. J. Thomson at Cambridge, developed modern mass spectrograph technology to investigate inconsistencies in the atomic weights of elements, discovering that "the elements are composed of atoms of varying mass, the atomic weight of an element being the average of those atoms comprising it?. [Frederick] Soddy had coined the term isotopes for elements that are 'homogenous in chemical behaviour'. Thus, for example, no process of chemical analysis will differentiate between thorium, one form of uranium, and ionium, although each has a different atomic weight. Aston carried this investigation one very important stage further by demonstrating that similar conditions occur within the elements themselves [eventually identifying 212 naturally occurring isotopes by analyzing all but three of the non-radioactive elements in the periodic table.]. . . . The ultimate consequences of these discrepancies are far-reaching. The ration between hydrogen and oxygen is not 4:1, as it 'should be', but rather less; which means that when four atoms of hydrogen are transformed into one helium atom some matter is annihilated. In fact this is an example of the interchangeability between mass and energy which is postulated in Einstein's General Theory of Relativity" (PMM 412). Aston's "work on isotopes also led to his formulation of the whole number rule which states that 'the mass of the oxygen isotope being defined [as 16], all the other isotopes have masses that are very nearly whole numbers,' a rule that was used extensively in the development of nuclear energy." (ODNB) "Aston's achievements were kept continually before the scientific public by revised editions of his excellent book Isotopes. The included . . . a clear forecast of the power and dangers of harnassed atomic energy." (Gillispie) N. B.         Beautiful and Damned, The

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-. True First Printing (without the publisher's seal on the copyright page or the concluding advertisements on pp. 451-452 of later printings) of the author's second novel. 8vo; [10], 449, [1]pp. Publisher's dark blue-green linen-like cloth, the spine lettered gilt, the upper cover blind-stamped with the title and author, the fore-edge untrimmed. A just about Fine copy (lacking the dust jacket), save for offsetting to the end papers and faintly discernible pencil erasures to the front fly leaf. Bruccoli A8.1.a. The Beautiful and Damned, in cut and edited form, first appeared in seven installments in Metropolitan magazine, from September 1921 to March 1922. The book, according to Bruccoli, came out on 4 March 1922, in a first impression of 20,600 copies. It went through two more printings that year, for a total of 50,000 copies. After the spectacular success of Fitzgerald's first novel, This Side of Paradise (1920), he struck out in a new direction, presenting in The Beautiful and Damned a more sparing, focused narrative, relying largely on an omniscient narrator. "Its style," according to the Literary Encyclopedia, "moves towards that integration of romantic and modernist elements which will come to such dazzling fruition in his next novel, The Great Gatsby."         Babbitt

New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. First Printing (no further printings noted), Second Issue, with 'Lyte' for 'Purdy' and 'any' for 'my' p. 49 (only 9500 copies of the first issue were printed before those two corrections were made). Thick 8vo: [6],401,[7]pp. Publisher's royal blue cloth, upper cover and spine lettered in blue (negative of orange title blocks) and orange; cream-colored dust jacket printed in French blue and black. Fine (very lightly read, if at all), with neat presentation inscription dated 1922 on first front blank; in a lightly restored example of the "absurdly fragile" (Pastore) jacket that presents as just about Fine, with a hint of fading to the spine and the flap folds dust-soiled. Pastore, pp. 67-73. Johnson, High Spots, pp. 50-51. Sinclair Lewis's unconventionally written tale of a middling, middle-aged man in a mid-level career in a Midwestern town facing a series of psychological crises that reveal to him the emptiness of his superficially successful and prosperous life. Like Main Street, Lewis's first best-selling novel, Babbitt generated controversy (Lewis found himself the target of articles in such unlikely journals as the National Real Estate Journal, Rotarian, and Nation's Business), became a cultural phenomenon, and contributed a new word to the language. Generally, reviewers saw the book as an advance on Main Street, with fewer dull spots. Because of it, H. L. Mencken became an avid Lewis supporter, writing in Smart Set that the novel was both a great “social document” and “bitingly funny.” For many later readers, the book defines the 1920s, as did Scott Fitzgerald's This Side of Paradise and The Great Gatsby and Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. And, not incidentally, it was more than partially responsible for Lewis winning the Nobel Prize. (adapted from The Literary Encyclopedia).         The Waste Land

New York: Boni & Liveright, 1922 [1923?]. Second printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine+. Number 369 (stamped in type 2-mm high, per Gallup A6b) of the second impression limited to just 1000 copies. (Though stated as the "second edition" on the colophon page, this second impression of 1000 copies was printed from the same setting of type as the first printing and is more accurately termed, as listed in Gallup, the "second impression.") With the incorrect 'mount in,' line 339, p. 41. Slim octavo; 64pp. Publisher's stiff black cloth, the spine and upper cover lettered in gilt, all edges deckled; in the original salmon-pink dust jacket printed in black. Near Fine, clean and complete, the gilt lettering still bright, with minor bumping to the spine ends; flawed by dark offsetting from paper laid in between the rear end papers and between pp. 38-39 and light chipping to the top of the half title and title pages where the uncut pages were opened carelessly; otherwise a bright, unmarred, very lightly read copy with no names, bookplates, or writing. The jacket is Near Fine or better without restoration, the front and back panel clean and complete—indeed Fine—but the spine darkened with trivial rubbing to the ends and a small sliver of loss mid-spine, not affecting any lettering. Overall, a remarkable, highly collectible copy of likely the century's most important poetic work. (Connolly, The Modern Movement, 30b). Gallup, Eliot, A6a. HBS 65471. ODNB April is the cruellest month . . . "The celebrated opening lines [of Eliot's chef d'oeuvre describe the reawakening of the life forces in spring as unwelcome: insensate winter sleep was a far better condition. . . . The five sections of the poem do indeed present a wasteland, a desert; and it is not surprising that the title of the poem is nearly always pronounced (and quite often written) as if the two words waste land were one. However, both waste and land should be stressed: wasteness is an attribute of the land that is modern western civilisation in the aftermath of the First World War, the disaster whose shadow fell over much of the twentieth century. . . . The civilisation that Eliot portrays is one in which the old values and loyalties have fallen apart. There is no sense of purpose in life: procreation is impeded, empathy non-existent, physical sensations dulled or skewed, and sensual pleasure thwarted." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Ulysses.

Shakespeare and Company, Paris 1922 - First edition, one of 750 numbered copies, this example is number 282. Quarto, original blue wrappers as issued. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "To Lewis Galantiere James Joyce Paris 11 February 1922." Ulysses was scheduled for publication on Joyce's fortieth birthday (February 2, 1922), but only two copies were ready on that date due to technical difficulties in printing the cover, the color of which Joyce wanted to match with the blue of the Greek flag. One of these was the copy delivered by Sylvia Beach to Joyce on February 2, which he then inscribed to his wife Nora, being the only known presentation copy to predate Galantiere's. The present copy in turn predates by two days the three copies presented to Sylvia Beach, Harriet Shaw Weaver and Margaret Anderson, and by three days the copy inscribed to Robert McAlmon, who helped Joyce prepare the final typescript. Galantiere was an American translator of French literature, writer, playwright and journalist. From 1920 to 1927 he was secretary of the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris, and came to know most of the literary figures of the day, including Hemingway. In a letter to Harriet Weaver of 17 April 1926, Joyce writes: "I am to read [from Finnegans Wake] . to a small group, this time including . a young American Galantiere who is preparing a course of lectures of Ulysses" (Joyce Letters vol 3, p 140). Slocum & Cahoon A17; Connolly The Modern Movement 42. In excellent condition with light rubbing, rebacked without the folding flaps. With Galantiere's marginal markings in pencil and in ink. Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell box. An exceptional rarity of this twentieth century milestone. Ulysses was published in Paris by Shakespeare & Company in 1922. "The novel is universally hailed as the most influential work of modern times" (Grolier Joyce 69). After working seven years on Ulysses, Joyce, desperate to find a publisher, turned to Sylvia Beach of Shakespeare and Company in Paris. "Within a month of the publication, the first printing of Ulysses was practically sold out, and within a year Joyce had become a well-known literary figure. Ulysses was explosive in its impact on the literary world of 1922. Then began the great game of smuggling the edition into countries where it was forbidden, especially England and the United States. The contraband article was transported across the seas and national borders in all sorts of cunning ways" (de Grazia, 27). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
