STEIN, M. Aurel.
Oxford: Clarendon Press,, 1921. Perhaps the most fruitful archaeological expedition that has been undertaken in modern times 5 volumes, quarto, comprising 3 volumes of text, volume of plates and plans, and map-case. Original brick-red cloth, spines and front covers lettered in gilt, front covers with embossed gilt roundel showing Athena with arm outstretched brandishing the aegis incorporating the gorgoneion (Stein's personal emblem). 345 half-tone illustrations from photographs and 59 plans to the text volumes, 175 plates to the third volume, map-case with 94 maps. Bookplates and shelf marks of Bath Public Library, with their stamps in blank margins of text and plates. Spine ends lightly bumped, front hinge of vol. III cracked, some very light foxing to contents. Map case a little rubbed, scratch to top panel, some maps a little cockled and creased. A very good set. First edition, first impression, of this landmark work which has a strong claim to be the single most important text on Central Asia. Stein explains in his introduction: "The term Serindia, as adopted (in the form Sérinde) by valued French fellow-scholars, is excellently suited for the designation of this region, well-defined by nature as well as by historical relationship. Significant brevity would amply justify its use even if the interpretation which derives Procopius' local name Serinda from a compound of the terms [in Greek Seres, the classical name for the people of Serica or China] and India may prove to have no better foundation than 'learned popular etymology'". Stein provides a richly illustrated ac … [Click Below for Full Description]

Seymour, Ralph Fletcher]
Privately printed, N.p. [Chicago?], 1921. First edition. Title printed within thick and thin rule border; vignette device at end. [4], 92, [2] pp. 1 vols. 4to (12-3/8 x 9-1/2 inches). With Rod & Gun in Wyoming. Rare, privately-printed account of a month-long fishing and hunting expedition through Wyoming in the early fall of 1920. The text relates the experiences of two couples, Ralph and Myra, and Philip and Caroline on a hunting and fishing expedition, particularly in pursuit of elk and sheep. Their guides are identified as Ned Frost ("the sine qua non of the whole excursion") and Carl Hammett. In the foreword the unnamed author offers useful advice for making such a trip successful and comfortable, recommending clothing, footwear, and camping material: "There are many sleeping outfits that are fairly satisfactory, but of those who have come under my observation, the best combination is an air mattress (with bellows to blow it up) and on top of it an eider down 'Arctic Sleeping Bag' with a Hudson Bay blanket inside to wrap closely around you. With this outfit you can 'sleep warm' and comfortably, no matter what the temperature may be - and 'sleeping warm' is one of the secrets of a successful hunting trip." The text consists of daily entries, from their September 20 departure by train from Chicago to their return a month later, with outstanding descriptions of the scenery and natural wonders of Wyoming, the results of their hunting and fishing adventures, and how each of the four city-dwellers performed in the wild. A few of the entries are written by the women who partic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hartley, Marsden
Boni and Liveright, New York, 1921. First edition. xviii, 254 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The Dedication Copy, Inscribed to Alfred Stieglitz. THE DEDICATION COPY OF HARTLEY'S FIRST BOOK, INSCRIBED BY MARSDEN HARTLEY ON THE DEDICATION PAGE TO ALFRED STIEGLITZ: "My dear Stieglitz, This is the book you saved from the chaos of a grim period. I hope it proved worth the trouble. I marvel that your faith abounds with such vitality. I take courage myself from your example. Devotedly, Marsden Hartley." On the facing page Stieglitz has written the date and location of the inscription in pencil, "April 14 - 1924. 60 E. 65 St." An association of tremendous importance - Stieglitz was the first established artist or gallery owner to recognize and promote Hartley's talent. He mounted Hartley's first solo show at his 291 gallery in May of 1909 at a time when Hartley was a virtual unknown in the art world. "Poor and lonely, Hartley was moved by Stieglitz's tangible demonstration of faith in him and his art. At 291 he discovered the spiritual home he had long been seeking, and in Stieglitz he found a mentor who genuinely cared about his work and who was willing to nurture his creative development" (Homer, p. 153). Stieglitz would show Hartley's work five more times at 291 as well as at the Anderson Galleries, the Intimate Gallery, and An American Place. He helped finance Hartley's first trip to Europe in 1912; the direct exposure to the European avant-garde was a major impact in the development of Hartley's art. Hartley handed over power of attorney to Stieglitz during his time abroad, and it was Stieg … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tennyson, Alfred Lord
Oxford University Press, London, 1921. Octavo, finely bound in full leather by Riviere. Gilt titles and tooling to the spine, double gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, slipcase. Frontispiece of Tennyson. Introduction by Herbert Warren. In near fine condition. As source material for his poetry, Tennyson used a wide range of subject matter ranging from medieval legends to classical myths and from domestic situations to observations of nature. The influence of John Keats and other Romantic poets published before and during his childhood is evident from the richness of his imagery and descriptive writing. He also handled rhythm masterfully. The insistent beat of Break, Break, Break emphasizes the relentless sadness of the subject matter. Tennyson's use of the musical qualities of words to emphasize his rhythms and meanings is sensitive. Tennyson was a craftsman who polished and revised his manuscripts extensively, to the point where his efforts at self-editing were described by his contemporary Robert Browning as "insane", symptomatic of "mental infirmity." Few poets have used such a variety of styles with such an exact understanding of metre; like many Victorian poets, he experimented in adapting the quantitative metres of Greek and Latin poetry to English. He reflects the Victorian period of his maturity in his feeling for order and his tendency towards moralizing. He also reflects a concern common among Victorian writers in being troubled by the conflict between religious faith and expanding scientific knowledge. Like … [Click Below for Full Description]

He moved to London early in the 20th century and in 1905 received his first commission to illustrate the novels of the Bronte Sisters. During World War I, Dulac produced relief books and when the deluxe children's book market shrank after the war, he turned to magazine illustrations among other ventures. He designed banknotes during World War II and postage stamps, most notably those that heralded the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
Oeuvre originale
