Greensboro, North Carolina: Frank T. Miller, Consulting Engineer, 1921. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Quarto. Black covers with faded title on the front cover. 8 typed pages, front sides only, bound in before the folding blue print. The blue print is in several sections and is backed by sturdy linen. One article in particular discussed the history of rail transportation in Durham and was copied here from carolana dot com . "Although Durham Traction Company retained its name and most officers were unchanged, Henry L. Doherty of New York and the H. L. Doherty Company controlled ownership by 1912. F. W. Frueauff of New York, the only non-Durham director in 1915, was president by 1920, when streetcar lines extended eleven miles within the city. The company's name changed to Durham Public Service Company in 1921. R. L. Lindsay, vice president and general manager, had been manager of Durham Traction. [Griffith, D. W.]
[Np. c. 1921]. Large broadside, 29 by 41 inches, closely framed. Folds, trifle foxing. Fine. American film director D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation was an extravagant dramatization of the American Civil War and Reconstruction. Griffith's epic movie was based on Thomas Dixon Jr.'s 1905 novel The Clansman. Upon its release in 1915, Birth of a Nation was immediately controversial. The movie's racist depiction of African Americans, and its heroic portrayal of the Ku Klux Klan, was divisive. The movie served as a propaganda vehicle for the KKK to promote their xenophobic, anti-immigration platform. Klansman would congregate and parade before showings of the film. Sometimes even the movie house ushers would attire themselves in the robes of the Klan. At the same time, the NAACP waged a long legal and activist-based battle against the film. The enduring popularity of the film led to its re-release in 1921. The film was decidedly instrumental in the revival of the Ku Klux Klan in America, in the 1920s. One estimate is that, in part of the movie's influence in American society, the membership rolls of the KKK had swelled to nearly 5-million members by the mid-1920s.¹ Large, striking, and bold, this unrecorded movie poster for Birth of a Nation was issued for its 1921 re-release. The poster is dramatically printed in red and black lettering, using oversized block lettering. All of its text is printed within a black border. At that time the New York Mail hailed the film as "the Supreme Picture of All Time," a sobriquet that here becomes the opening line for this c. 1921 poster. … [Click Below for Full Description]

KUSTODIEV, Boris Mikhailovich.
Komitet Populyar. Khud. Izd., Petrograd, 1921. One of only 300 copies of this large portfolio, published during – and contrasting with - the difficult times of the young communist Russia. It summarizes the art of Kustodiev: lush landscapes and other idyllic scenes of happy peasants and landowners as well as one alluring zaftig bather on the riverbank. The work became popular and copies were soon difficult to find. Kustodiev’s friend and biographer, V. Voynov, wrote in his diary on 22 December 1921: "Album of Boris Mikhailovich really impresses. "Astonishing" success - I keep hearing everywhere. The demand for it in the Committee shop is growing day by day". It was exhibited the following year at the International Books Exhibition in Florence. Prior to the October Revolution, Kustodiev (1878-1927) was famous for his portraits of wealthy contemporaries. He embraced the Boshevik uprising and devoted much of his later life to depicting the noble labourer. He was also well known for his children's books and lithographs. Description and condition Folio (32.5 x 41.7 cm). Half-title, title, table of contents with 2 lithographs, 16 lith. plates signed by Kustodiev. Plates in fresh condition. Ohne Autor.:
Condition: Gut. Artikeldetails Notgeld deutscher Städte. Ohne Autor.: 1921. Einsteckalbum. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hi, This lot is a 1921 Original Hardback Wisden This year is one of the rarest Hardbacks I find and very under rated in the rarity stakes , this is rare but only in just Good Condition, but very nicely priced. The boards are quite dark and marked , the spine cloth is also a bit dark and the gilt is a touch darkened , the front gilt is bright. Internally the pastedowns follow the dark theme and the hinges are weak but not broken some mesh can be seen between page 2 and 3. Some pencil markings inside. One thing that is special is that to the title page it states "To C Stewart Caine from Sydney Pardon" so the current editor to a future editor so this was once owned by an editor of Wisden. Nice inside. Excellent Photoplate and a unique Wisden but condition could be better. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
