Tenggren, Gustaf (illustrator)
Stockholm: Ahlen & Akerlunds, 1921. First edition. Original color pictorial wrappers with an additional color illustration on the front wrapper and another illustration printed in brown on the back wrapper. Small quarto (7 5/8 x 7 1/8 inches; 193 x 181 mm.). Ten full-page color plates and 4 black and white illustrations. A near fine copy of a very scarce Tenggren title. A collection of tales with drawings of. G.A. Tenggren, who in 1913 received a scholarship to study painting at Valand, the art school in Gothenburg, Sweden. Tenggren's early schooling and artistic influences were solidly grounded in Scandinavian techniques, motifs and myths; he worked with illustrating in the popular Swedish folklore and fairy tales annual Among Gnomes and Trolls, where he succeeded the illustrator John Bauer. After his first exhibition in 1920, Tenggren left Sweden and moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States, where his sister lived, and from there, in 1922, to New York City. By 1923, he was illustrating children's book during the heyday of illustrated books by illustrators such as Arthur Rackham and Kay Nielsen.[Attributes: First Edition]

Epstein, Jean, Claude Delbanne (designer
Editions de la Sirene, 1921. First Edition. Includes three original illustrations: two are primarily typographic layouts, one centered around Charlie Chaplin (each is lacking the applied paste-up elements, in the case of the Chaplin image, it lacks the photographic image that was pasted on and that appears in the finished illustration), and the third and most interesting is the original drawing for the illustration that appears on page 85, of three men. An seminal text on cinema, a reflection on then-current films by Epstein, one of the earliest and most important French critics. But just as importantly, a spectacular example of deco era typography and design by Claude Delbanne, utilizing elements of film culture, variations on posters, popular film culture, and Russian Constructivist design. Saddle stitched two-color wrappers, with illustrations laid in. A single tiny chip, else Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Winslow, Arizona, etc, 1921. Oblong folio. Measuring 11.75" x 7.25". Limp leather wallet-style binding with snaps. Contains 246 gelatin silver prints inserted into corner mounts. Most photos measure between 2" x 5.25" and 3" x 5.25". A fair amount are captioned either in ink on the photo or on small neatly cut sheets of white paper pasted on. Album is good or better: soundly bound but the leather of the backstrip and its overlapping fold at the foredge are perished; internally fine, photos are fine. An exceptionally talented amateur photographer created this album of remarkably crisp images, creating a visual feast of Arizona in the early 20th Century. The photographer appears to be from Winslow and there are numerous street and birds-eye views of the town around 1920, showing many buildings, signage, and the local populace. Other Winslow shots include parades, uniformed school children performing calisthenics, and a six-shot series of when the circus came to town. The album also includes leisure activities, with camping trips, images of hunting and fishing, and breathtaking views of "The Badlands" and the George Hubbard ranch. Also present are a few shots in Phoenix at the Capitol building, some on the campus of the University of Arizona, and an excellent shot of Shriners crowding a street in downtown Tucson. Additionally showing are street scene in Springerville and another show showing billowing smoke escaping the stacks of a Flagstaff lumber mill. Seventeen images show action at football games, the players fitted with leather helmets. About half of these show Native Ame … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: Maurice Le Garrec, 1921. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. Two letterpress bifolia: half-title and title, and 'Avertissement' and table. 40 cliché verre prints, originally 1854-1904, on smooth wove paper, each print with the stamp of Sagot-Le Garrec (L. 1766a), and numbered 44/150 in pencil on the reverse, the full sheets as published, hinged at the upper reverse corners, in mounts stamped with the plate numbers. 481 x 394 mm overall, plate sizes vary. Loose in original cloth-board portfolio, gilt-lettered on front. Some staining to text leaves, plates in fine condition. LIMITED EDITION, number 44 of 150 sets. A superb collection by the Parisian art dealer and publisher Maurice Le Garrec reprinting cliché verre plates from Corot, the master of the technique, Daubigny, Delacrois, Millet, and Rousseau, all masters of the Romantic and Barbizon schools. Though they are reproduced in black rather than the characteristic brown inks of the 19th-century impressions, the scarce portfolio increased public awareness of the printmaking process. de ACOSTA, Mercedes (Mabel Normand)
Moffat, Yard and Company, New York, 1921. First edition. Papercovered boards with printed label. Small label of the Churchill Book and Print Shop in Los Angeles, erosion on the spine, sunning and corners of the board rubbed, a good copy. Poetry by the remarkable Cuban-American lesbian poet, playwright, and socialite reputed to have conducted lesbian affairs with Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Alla Nazimova, Eva Le Gallienne, Isadora Duncan, Katharine Cornell, and Maude Adams, among others. A very amusing copy. Mabel Normand's copy with her bookplate, and Inscribed by her to herself: "For 'Mayme' with love from her friend with all the word friendship means. Mabel." Additionally Normand has Signed her name "Mabel" at 19 different poems that apparently appealed to her and at one other poem as "Mayme." Additionally she has made comments at a couple of poems (one reads "I love this"). There is also a later, apparently unrelated ownership signature. Normand was a fascinating character in her own right, a silent film star, comedienne, and apparent hedonist who lead a colorful life until her death at 37. She carried on a long affair with Mack Sennett, helped foster the career of Charlie Chaplin, wrote and directed many of her own films, was entangled in the murder of her friend and fellow bibliophile, the director William Desmond Taylor (she departed his house after borrowing some books from him, and was the last known person to see him alive), as well as in the shooting of oil broker and golfer Courtland S. Dines (shot by her chauffeur with her pistol). In 1920 she played a "split … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brod, Max.
