BAUM, L. Frank
Salem, Mass, New York, London: Parker Brothers, Inc., 1921. The Original Oz board Game in the Original Cardboard Box BAUM, L. Frank. The Wonderful Game of Oz. Salem, Mass, New York, London: Parker Brothers, Inc., 1921. The Original Oz board Game (board copyrighted 1921) in the original cardboard box. Top of box with a superb chromolithographed color plate showing Dorothy standing in front of the Tin Man and next to the Scarecrow. The Scarecrow is sitting on the back of the Cowardly Lion with Oz in the background. Two original rectangular cardboard 'box' dividers and also a smaller rectangular cardboard box containing a 'fluted' wooden barrel, with all six of the wooden dies, all four of the wooden tokens and the complete four-page instruction booklet and one-page supplement. The box lid sides (flaps) show a little wear and have been neatly repaired or strengthened, otherwise a near fine and complete example. With a contemporary (1921) pencil inscription on inside of box lid "George F. Hugel / Xmas 1921." A fabulous game board that measures 19" square when opened. This is a near fine example of the game, hard to find complete. Early issue with the cover illustration repeated on the game board (board copyrighted 1921) and with side panels of the box lid measuring 1 inch in depth but with wooden dies instead of the earliest pewter pieces. The Wonderful Game of Oz was a noteworthy example of Oz promotional merchandise, an Oz-themed board game manufactured by Parker Brothers. It was first sold to the public in 1921 and remained on the market until at least 1939. The playing boar … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mr. French was the first friend I made after coming to Chicago ten years ago, and was one of the few men who looked over, through and beyond the crude, outer covering of ignorance which dominated my personality, and became my friend on account of that which he saw lying dormant in my soul, awaiting the awakening hand of time and experience. Much of the best I have written was inspiried by suggestions from Mr. French, given in ordinary conversation, out of his own rich fund of knowledge. Presented to Parliament by Command of His Majesty
London: His Majesty's Stationary Office, 1921. Rare collection of original documents relating to the Palestine Question 1917-1947. Octavos, 3 volumes, unbound. Scarce and desirable. With the failure of the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry in 1946, the British government requested the General Assembly of the United Nations to form a special committee to investigate the Palestine problem. The United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) arrived in Palestine on 15 June 1947. The Arab Higher Committee believed UNSCOP to be pro-Zionist, and so boycotted proceedings, although some members of the AHC did meet the committee in a private capacity. While UNSCOP was in Palestine, the SS Exodus arrived in Haifa with Jewish Displaced Persons seeking to illegally immigrate to Palestine, and some have stated that it was this that changed the UN's outlook to support the creation of the state of Israel. UNSCOP's final recommendations delivered on 3 September 1947 at Geneva, supported the termination of the Mandate, with a majority of committee members recommending the partition of Palestine into two separate states, and a minority favouring a federal union with Jerusalem as its capital. Having originally boycotted UNSCOP, the Arab Higher Committee must have realised that there would have been only a very small window of opportunity between the Geneva meeting and the General Assembly vote to present their case, and so compiled the present lot. Published on 1 October 1947, it contains 46 different documents, 'Includ[ing] the texts of correspondence, memoranda and notes submitted … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wither, George
San Francisco: Privately Printed [at The Grabhorn Press], 1921. Limited Edition. From a small edition for the printer (unknown number), octavo size, [6] unnumbered pp. An early Grabhorn Press item, printed in 1921; number 35 in the bibliography, as Edwin and Robert had only arrived in San Francisco the year before, in 1920. Per the Bibliography, 100 copies were privately printed for Hugh Thomas, with his greeting printed in red, and issued as stitched sheets. There were "also some copies, with a new donor's greeting in black, printed by Ralph Henry Thatcher, an employee of the Press, for himself at Christmas, 1921". This is one of those few copies, with no indication of how many were printed. He was also probably responsible for the different binding, as the main edition was issued in wrappers. The main edition of 100 copies would have had the donor's greeting printed in red, printed for Hugh Thomas. George Wither's (1588-1667) "Christmas Carol" was first published in "Fair-virtue, the Mistresse of Philarete" in 1622. This copy from the library of Marjorie and Martin Mitau, with their beautiful bookplate (an etching signed by the artist). Martin Mitau (1900-1973) and Marjorie Mitau (1906-1983) were both prominent San Franciscans and lived in the Bay Area all their lives; Martin was a member of Roxburghe Club of San Francisco and the Book Club of California and we can surmise with very little doubt that they knew the Grabhorns and their work. ___DESCRIPTION: Original light tan laid paper over boards, the bookplate of the Mitaus on the front pastedown, title page with greetin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pearson, Ralph M. (Artist)
Kansas City: American Bookplate Society, 1921. Pearson, Ralph M. No. 51 of 250 copies, octavo size, 12 loose pages, signed by the artist. Ralph M. Pearson (1883-1958) was an American printmaker who specialised in etching and created stunning prints of landscapes and the working class; he took a painterly approach to etching, using a variety of marks to capture the spirit of his subjects. During his life, he received awards from the California Society of Etchers and the American Bookplate Society, among many others. He also exhibited at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, showing many of the bookplates in this collection. These twelve bookplates demonstrate Pearson's finesse in the fields of etching and bookplate design; each are signed by the artist in pencil beneath the plate, and arranged chronologically to show the development of Pearson's style, from the pure landscapes of his early bookplates to the pictorial symbolism of his later designs. This collection includes bookplates for Ruth R. Pearson, Florence M. Hendershot, Frank O. Lowden (a Republican politician who served as the 25th Governor of Illinois), Wallace Heckman, Ruth Morris, Leroy Truman Goble, Elizabeth Faulkner, Albert and Margaret De Silver (founding members of the American Civil Liberties Union), Virginie Migeon Swift, Florence Lowden, Irving and Ione Scales, and Thomas Alexander Mellon (of the influential Mellon family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). The bookplate created for Albert and Margaret De Silver received the award from the American Bookplate Society. ___DESCRIPTION: Fold … [Click Below for Full Description]

de ACOSTA, Mercedes (Mabel Normand
Moffat, Yard and Company, 1921. Good. Hardcover. First edition. Papercovered boards with printed label. Small label of the Churchill Book and Print Shop in Los Angeles, erosion on the spine, sunning and corners of the board rubbed, a good copy. Poetry by the remarkable Cuban-American lesbian poet, playwright, and socialite reputed to have conducted lesbian affairs with Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Alla Nazimova, Eva Le Gallienne, Isadora Duncan, Katharine Cornell, and Maude Adams, among others. A very amusing copy. Mabel Normand's copy with her bookplate, and Inscribed by her to herself: "For 'Mayme' with love from her friend with all the word friendship means. Mabel." Additionally Normand has Signed her name "Mabel" at 19 different poems that apparently appealed to her and at one other poem as "Mayme." Additionally she has made comments at a couple of poems (one reads "I love this"). There is also a later, apparently unrelated ownership signature. Normand was a fascinating character in her own right, a silent film star, comedienne, and apparent hedonist who lead a colorful life until her death at 37. She carried on a long affair with Mack Sennett, helped foster the career of Charlie Chaplin, wrote and directed many of her own films, was entangled in the murder of her friend and fellow bibliophile, the director William Desmond Taylor (she departed his house after borrowing some books from him, and was the last known person to see him alive), as well as in the shooting of oil broker and golfer Courtland S. Dines (shot by her chauffeur with her pistol). In 1920 she played a … [Click Below for Full Description]

1921. William Hope Hodgson - The eight "cheap editions" published by Holden and Hardingham between 1920 and 1921, all in original dust jackets. The titles are: Carnacki the Ghost Finder, The Night land, Men of the Deep Waters, The House on the Borderland, The Boats of Glen-Carrig, The Luck of the Strong, Captain Gault and The Ghost Pirates All eight cheap editions published shortly after Hodgson's death, in their original dust jackets, all illustrated in the same style and using the same colour palette. An important edition, as aside from a few magazine appearances Hodgson would not be in print again until his resurrection by Arkham House in the 1940s. Three are bound in cloth, all from 1920, with the later five in cheaper paper boards. The bindings are generally firm, the boards mostly clean with only minor bumping and rubbing, some with varying degrees of fading, Captain Gault has fared slightly worse than the other seven with loss to the paper at the bottom of the front board and a knock to the rear board. The text blocks are age browned and slightly dusty, all have the same bookseller's label to the front pastedown. The dust jackets are mostly slightly grubby with minor loss and short closed tears, some have small tape repairs or tape burns from old repairs to the reverse, a few have more significant loss and rubbing and two are substantially complete. A very rare complete set of Hodgson's weird, fantastic supernatural and nautical novels and short story collections, which to judge by the uniformity of condition and the bookseller's labels may well have been together si … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hi, This lot is a 1921 Original Hardback Wisden This year is one of the rarest Hardbacks I find and very under rated in the rarity stakes , this is rare and in Very Good Condition. The boards are very nice, a couple of tiny light marks to the rear board, the gilt is bright to the spine and front , odd dark spot to the gilt if being critical, there has been no restoration to the book or the lettering. The hinges are very strong and yellow pastedowns clean. Very nice inside. Excellent Photoplate. A book not to miss. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ASHENDENE PRESS.
Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1921. Collotype facsimiles of the first two leaves of the original manuscript bound after the introduction. Printed in Subiaco type in red and black with initials, designed by Graily Hewitt, printed in blue. One of 236 copies. 8vo., original limp vellum with green silk ties, fore and lower edges untrimmed. An exceptionally good, fresh copy, top edge just very slightly spotted. Reprinted from the fifteenth century Florentine manuscript by Ugolino Verino which was in the private collection of Hornby, having been bought by him at Sothebys in 1918. After the sale the Franciscan scholar Walter Seton asked permission to study it as a hitherto unknown version of the Life of St. Clare and his introduction and notes printed here summarise the results of his work. As Franklin points out, this and Omar Khayyam are the two Ashendenes which rank as serious critical editions. Ashendene Bibliography XXX.

Hardcover. Large 4to. Charcoal grey paper-covered boards, illustrated with vivid orange fire-demon; grey endpapers stenciled with orange flame-silhouettes. Includes twelve pages of text (in German), each with a full-page watercolor and pen illustration opposite: [24]pp. in total. Signed and dated in pencil on blank verso of final leaf: "November 21 / Roland." Chipped at spine ends to reveal a hint of blue cloth. Joint cracked at head with small tape at foot. Edges and corners bumped and scuffed. Some minor foxing and soil to a few pages. Else bright and sound. Very good. Very good. A gorgeously illustrated private production from the golden age of children's illustration, by an unknown or pseudonymous artist-author credited only as "Roland." A cautionary tale of the dangers of fire, FEUERFUNKCHEN ("Little Spark") partakes strongly of the German folktale tradition, somewhere midway between the Brothers Grimm and Heinrich Hoffmann. In measured couplets enhanced by singular watercolors, the book's lesson strongly recall the Very Sad Story of the Matches from Hoffmann's "Der Struwwelpeter," but what Roland lacks in Hoffmannian sadism and drollery, he more than makes up for in grandeur. The deftly designed and boldly colored illustrations evoke primal terror with a real hint of the sublime. The storyline echoes its famous predecessor in beginning and ending with a warning to beware and be careful, but the lingering message is less one of obedience to authority than of fearful respect for the element of fire. Where Hoffmann's naughty little girl burns hersel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Braunschweig: Vieweg & Sohn, 1921. 1st Edition. Soft cover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (224 x 143 mm). 48 pp., 3 plates. Original publisher's wrappers, printed in red and black, spined lettered in black (short split at fold towards head of spine, minor soiling). Text little age toned only, a few pencil markings at fore-margin. Provenance: Hirschwaldsche Buchhandlung Berlin (small sticker to inner front wrapper). A fine, unsophisticated copy. ---- FIRST EDITION, very rare. As a scientist, Wegener was extremely versatile. 106 of his 170 publications treat meteorological topics. The doctoral thesis however treated astronomy. In some way, his later work on lunar craters and meteorites can be regarded as a continuation of his early astronomical studies. Wegener was concerned with the shape of impact craters. He made experiments using cement powder and in 1921 wrote the monograph Die Entstehung der Mondkrater (The origin of lunar craters). In this work, he expressed the view that the great majority of lunar craters were formed by the impact of meteorites. An opinion at that time advocated by few outsiders only, but which is generally accepted today. Mott T. Greene, Alfred Wegener and the Origin of Lunar Craters. Earth Sciences History, Vol. 17, No. 2, 1998, pp. 111-138. Als Wissenschaftler war Wegener außerordentlich vielseitig. 106 von seinen 170 Veröffentlichungen behandeln meteorologische Themen. Die Doktorarbeit entstammte der Astronomie. Zur Astronomie könnte man auch seine späteren Arbeiten über Mondkrater und Meteoriten rechnen.
