        Jacob's Room.

Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, Richmond., 1922. First edition: one of about forty ''A Subscriber'' copies with the printed and autograph slip to this effect tipped onto the front free endpaper. Octavo. 290 pages. 14-page publishers' catalogue at rear. Mustard cloth with title label to spine. The label in this copy is inscribed by Virginia Woolf to Mrs Arnold-Forster who is better known to literary history under her maiden name Ka Cox (Katherine Laird Cox). She had been one of the more important of Rupert Brooke's lovers, with their break-up in 1912 creating such emotional turmoil in him that he fled abroad. The rift occurred early that year at Lulworth where a group of Cambridge Fabians had gathered for a reading weekend. Cox confessed her growing attraction to the painter Henry Lamb and plunged Brooke into a confusion of sexual jealousy mingled with the conviction that it was the manipulations of Lytton Strachey that had brought about this disaster. Later Brooke wrote from Cannes to Virginia Woolf, ''What tormented and crucified figures we literary people are! God! How I hate the healthy unimaginative hard shelled dilettanti, like James [Strachey] and Ka. It was a pity you couldn't come to the House Party long, long ago at Lulworth - not that you'd have enjoyed it: it was too horrible. But you might have made all the difference...'' Cox went on to marry the painter and writer Will Arnold-Forster. She died of a stroke in 1938. Ka Cox was always a close friend of Virginia Woolf, regularly appearing in the Diaries and Letters; in fact it was later in that fateful year 1912 that she nursed Woolf through one of her more devastating mental collapses. Some spotting to free endpapers. Some small snags to tail of spine. Covers a bit marked and dusty. Very good. These subscriber copies were not issued in dustwrappers.

Sinfonia in H moll. Wien den 30. Octob. 1822. [Faksimile der Handschrift].

(München, Drei Masken 1922). - Deutsch 759. Washington and the Riddle of Peace.

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1922. First edition. Octavo, original cloth, gilt titles to the spine. Boldly signed by H.G. Wells on the half-title page. In fine condition. Scarce and desirable signed. In the wake of World War I, the victor nations came together to shape the postwar era... and in doing so, laid the ground for the next great war. That was already obvious in 1921, when H. G. Wells gathered in one volume his essays for the New York World, the Chicago Tribune, and other American and European newspapers written in reaction to what he saw and heard at the Washington Conference to organize the peace. Though known, along with Jules Verne, as one of the 19th-century fathers of science fiction, here Wells explores more down-to-earth issues, from the "problem" of Russia and Japan-and how little could hope to be accomplished at this conference without their participation-to the "economic decadence" of the world and how to arrest it. Wells' intriguing foresight shines through, making this a fascinating document of the international disaster of the World Wars.

        Winston S. Churchill Signed Photograph.

Signed photograph of Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Black and white full-length photograph of Churchill reclining in a chair at his estate Chartwell, signed in the lower border, "Winston S. Churchill." Chartwell was the country house for over forty years the home of Winston Churchill. Churchill bought the property in September 1922 and lived there until shortly before his death in January 1965. In the thirties, excluded from political office, Chartwell became the center of Churchill's world and "the most important country house in Europe". At his dining table, he gathered friends to support him in his campaigns against German re-armament and the British government's response of appeasement; in his study, he composed his speeches and wrote his books; in his garden, he built walls, constructed lakes and painted. Closed up during the Second World War, the Churchills returned to Chartwell after he lost the 1945 election. In October 1964, he left the house for the last time, dying at his London home on 24 January 1965. The photograph measures 9 inches by 10 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 16 inches by 18 inches. Rare and desirable in such a large format. Winston S. Churchill was a British statesman who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. He was also an officer in the British Army, a non-academic historian, a writer and an artist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his overall, lifetime body of work. In 1963, he was the first of only eight people to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. Churchill was born into the family of the Dukes of Marlborough, a branch of the Spencer family. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer; his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an American socialite. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, the Anglo-Sudan War, and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and wrote books about his campaigns. At the forefront of politics for fifty years, he held many political and cabinet positions. Before the First World War, he served as President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty as part of Asquith's Liberal government. During the war, he continued as First Lord of the Admiralty until the Gallipoli Campaign caused his departure from government. He then briefly resumed active army service on the Western Front as commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He returned to government under Lloyd George as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, then Secretary of State for the Colonies. After two years out of Parliament, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Baldwin's Conservative government of 1924-1929, controversially returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure on the UK economy. Out of office and politically "in the wilderness" during the 1930s because of his opposition to increased home rule for India and his resistance to the 1936 abdication of Edward VIII, Churchill took the lead in warning about Nazi Germany and in campaigning for rearmament. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was again appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain on 10 May 1940, Churchill became Prime Minister. His speeches and radio broadcasts helped inspire British resistance, especially during the difficult days of 1940-41 when the British Commonwealth and Empire stood almost alone in its active opposition to Adolf Hitler. He led Britain as Prime Minister until victory over Nazi Germany had been secured. After the Conservative Party suffered an unexpected defeat in the 1945 general election, he became Leader of the Opposition to the Labour Government. He publicly warned of an "Iron Curtain" of Soviet influence in Europe and promoted European unity. After winning the 1951 election, Churchill again became Prime Minister. His second term was preoccupied by foreign affairs, including the Malayan Emergency, Mau Mau Uprising, Korean War, and a UK-backed coup d'?tat in Iran. Domestically his government laid great emphasis on house-building. Churchill suffered a serious stroke in 1953 and retired as Prime Minister in 1955, although he remained a Member of Parliament until 1964. Upon his death aged ninety in 1965, Elizabeth II granted him the honor of a state funeral, which saw one of the largest assemblies of world statesmen in history.

Later Poems [together with] Plays in Prose and Verse.

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1922. Two works, octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt to spines, blind panelling designed by Ricketts to front boards, unicorn design to pastedowns. Spines faded, cloth somewhat mottled and stained, very light rubbing to some extremities, internally fresh and uncut, a very good set in spite of the unfortunate marking. First editions, first impression, both titles inscribed by the author on the front free endpapers, "S. D. Green from W B Yeats Oct 16 1928". These UK editions precede the Macmillan's US editions by two years, and are very scarce inscribed. These two collections bring together very nicely the poetry from the middle of Yeats's career (from The Wind Among the Reeds, 1899, to Michael Robartes and the Dancer, 1921) and his Abbey Theatre plays. Intriguingly, Yeats had already inscribed these same two volumes in the year of publication to another recipient - the inscriptions, above those to Green, are scribbled out but still legible, "Mrs Woodmass from W B Yeats Nov 16 1922". Edith Woodmass was his wife George's grandmother, who died in 1927. This would explain the reinscription of these copies, which have nonetheless been together since the date of publication.

First edition, very rare. This pictorial record of and essay on Vilnius was published when the city was under Polish administration. The master photographer of Poland of the first half of the 20th century was Jan Bulhak. In 1912 he opened his own studio in Vilnius and lectured at the University where he soon became the head of the Institute of Photography in the department of fine arts (1919 - 1939). In 1927, he helped to found the Wilno Photo-Club as well as the Polish Photo-Club in 1929, of which he was also chairman. Just before the outbreak of the Second World War he presented his entire collection to the Polish State and during a German bombardment about 30,000 negatives were destroyed. The author Henryk Moscicki was a professor for modern Polish and Eastern European History, with a focus on Polish-Lithuanian relations in the 19th century. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Washington and the Riddle of Peace.

The Macmillan Company, New York 1922 - First edition. Octavo, original cloth, gilt titles to the spine. Boldly signed by H.G. Wells on the half-title page. In fine condition. Scarce and desirable signed. In the wake of World War I, the victor nations came together to shape the postwar era. and in doing so, laid the ground for the next great war. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
