Writ on Cold Slate. 'Only this age that loudly boasts Reform, hath set its seal of vengeance 'gainst the mind, decreeing nought in prison shall be writ, save on cold slate, and swiftly washed away.'

London The Dreadnought Publishers 1922 - First and only edition, 47, (1) pp., text browned, publisher's printed wrappers, advert on rear panel for the author's 'Soviet Russia, As I Saw It', light browning to spine, otherwise very good. A scarce collection of poems written by Pankhurst during one of her numerous prison; no other copy shown in auction records in the last 40 years. COPAC lists five copies. Born in Old Trafford in 1882, Sylvia Pankhurst was influenced in her youth by the political activism of her parents, Emmeline and Richard Marsden Pankhurst, who were members of the Fabian Society and the Independent Labour Party and helped establish the Women's Franchise League. Wishing to become an artist, she attended Manchester Art School and, from 1904, Chelsea's Royal College of Art. Her work, which combined socialist realism and Pre-Raphaelite allegory, was influenced by her art teacher, Walter Crane. Following Pankhurst's arrival in London, her parents' friend, Keir Hardie, became an important figure in her life. On his return from visiting India in 1909, he discussed with her his findings and opinions. Increasingly involved with the Women's Social and Political Union, Pankhurst devoted her energies from 1906 onward to fighting for women's suffrage, becoming known for her militancy. Using journalism to fund her activism, she wrote a series of articles on women's labour for the WSPU newspaper, Votes for Women, visited America on a lecture tour, and in 1911 published The Suffragette on the movement's history. A committed socialist, Pankhurst became involved with working women in London's East End, and supported George Lansbury, M.P. when he stood for re-election in Bromley-by-Bow on a women's suffrage ticket. In 1913 she established the militant East London Federation of Suffragettes, which supported trade union struggles including the Dublin lock-out. Pankhurst founded the Woman's Dreadnought in 1914, later renamed the Workers' Dreadnought, through which she came into contact with Rajani Palme Dutt, who contributed articles to the paper from 1917 until her split with the Communist Party in 1921. During the First World War she led anti-war campaigns, continued her social welfare work, and began to support revolutionary movements. She met Lenin after the war and, in 1920, helped form the British Communist Party from which she was later expelled. In 1924 she moved to Red Cottage in Woodford Green, where she was joined by Silvio Erasmus Corio, an Italian exile who had briefly converted to Islam in the early 1920s. At this time she wrote India and the Earthly Paradise, a 'romantic Communist' contribution to Indian nationalism which 'may have been the last result of her contacts with fringe elements of that movement' and was published in Bombay in 1926. She gave birth to her only child, Richard Keir Pethick, in 1927 at the age of 45 and because she refused to marry the father her mother disowned her. In the 1930s Sylvia Pankhurst committed herself to promoting peace, fighting fascism, assisting Jewish refugees and supporting Spanish republicans. Ethiopian independence became a consuming concern following the Italian invasion. In 1935 she established the journal New Times and Ethiopian News, which publicised and supported Haile Selassie's anti-colonial campaign. With her son, Pankhurst went to live in Ethiopia in 1956 and died in Addis Ababa in 1960. Prison. On October 23rd, 1906, a group of suffragettes led by Mrs Pankhurst herself infiltrated into the lobby of the House of Commons and started a protest meeting. They were bundled out into the street by policemen, there was what Sylvia Pankhurst called 'a scrimmage' and ten of the women were arrested. When they came up in Cannon Street police court the next day, the magistrate refused to listen to them and peremptorily ordered them to be bound over to be of good behaviour for six months or go to prison for six weeks. They protested and demanded the right to be heard in their own defence but the magistrate had them remo [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        The Garland

London: Gyldenal, 1922. First English Language Edition. Hardcover. This is an exceptional copy of the first English edition of Sigrid Undset's The Garland, the first volume in her Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy, which was the basis for her being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1928. This copy is scarce thus, near fine in a very good minus dust jacket. The dark red cloth binding, printed gilt on the spine and blind stamped with title and author on the front cover, is square, clean, bright, and tight. We note only light wear to extremities and a small, unobtrusive indentation to the center of the blank rear cover. The contents are notably bright with no spotting and surprisingly clean page edges. The sole previous ownership mark is an inked gift inscription and “1961” date on the front free endpaper. Differential toning to the endpapers corresponds to the dust jacket flaps and confirms what the excellent binding already testifies – that this copy has spent life jacketed. The dust jacket is strikingly bright, with no discernible fading to the vivid cover art and almost no spine toning. We note small losses to the spine ends and corners, as well as a small loss at the lower rear hinge and short closed tears to the bottom edge of the rear face. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. Sigrid Undset (1882-1949) was a Norwegian writer and recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Her father, a Norwegian archaeologist, died when Undset was 11, causing her to forego a university edition and take a job as a secretary with an engineering company. It was while working in this position that she began to write, published her first work, and gained notoriety as a writer, enabling her to quit office work and live on her income as a writer. While her novels with contemporary female protagonists in contemporary setting earned her initial reputation, The Nobel Prize in Literature 1928 was awarded to Sigrid Undset "principally for her powerful descriptions of Northern life during the Middle Ages". Undset drew on the histories, legends, and folklore passed to her from her father to write her Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy (1920-1922) detailing the life of the title character, a woman in Medieval Norway. The novels were praised for their accuracy and vivid prose and were the subject of some controversy for their frank depiction of female sexuality, some scenes of which were expurgated from this first translation.

Schnackenberg: Kostüme / Plakate und Dekorationen. Dreiundvierzig Tafeln.

Munich: Musarion Verlag, 1922. Second edition. Hardcover. Cloth. Paper pastedown on boards.. Very Good. Folio, 33.5 by 26 cm. 10 pp., 43 richly colored plates of theatrical posters created by Walter Schnackenberg (1880-1961), who was a Munich-based artist known especially for his theater-related artwork. Heavily influenced by Toulouse-Lautrec, this shows abundantly clearly in his poster art, with its free lines, its brash approach to perspective, its capturing of movement, its embrace of Orientalism and obviously, its subject matter and the type of show women it highlighted. Yet never do the posters come off as throwbacks to the late 19th century; rather, they seem to capture superbly the free-wheeling, daring spirit that flourished in Weimar Germany, especially in its entertainments, and the artwork still comes off as fresh and modern. Schnackenberg's involvement with the theater went beyond the production of posters to include set and costume design. The posters that form this compilation include ones for dance, cabaret and "legitimate" theater, and it is obvious how much in demand Schackenberg must have been in the Bavarian capital of the day. Other than twelve of the plates which are in black and white, a few of which are photo images, the color is brilliant, the result of a pochoir process used, and in a few instances, there is an application of gold. Rebacked inobtrusively with cloth, with original pictorial pastedowns on boards retained. Some light scuffing. Reinforcement to gutters. Toning to the plates.

        The Beautiful and Damned

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1922. True First Printing (without the publisher's seal on the copyright page or the concluding advertisements on pp. 451-452 of later printings) of the author's second novel. 8vo; [10], 449, [1]pp. Publisher's dark blue-green linen-like cloth, the spine lettered gilt, the upper cover blind-stamped with the title and author, the fore-edge untrimmed. A just about Fine copy (lacking the dust jacket), save for offsetting to the end papers and faintly discernible pencil erasures to the front fly leaf. Bruccoli A8.1.a. The Beautiful and Damned, in cut and edited form, first appeared in seven installments in Metropolitan magazine, from September 1921 to March 1922. The book, according to Bruccoli, came out on 4 March 1922, in a first impression of 20,600 copies. It went through two more printings that year, for a total of 50,000 copies. After the spectacular success of Fitzgerald's first novel, This Side of Paradise (1920), he struck out in a new direction, presenting in The Beautiful and Damned a more sparing, focused narrative, relying largely on an omniscient narrator. "Its style," according to the Literary Encyclopedia, "moves towards that integration of romantic and modernist elements which will come to such dazzling fruition in his next novel, The Great Gatsby." Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Fine-.

The Worst Journey in the World.

London: Constable & Company, 1922. First edition of this classic memoir of the 1910-1913 British Antarctic Expedition. Octavo, two volumes, original half white cloth, gray paper boards. Inscribed by Apsley Cherry-Garrard in each each volume. First editions signed and inscribed are of exceptional rarity. Apsley Cherry-Garrard served as assistant zoologist on Robert Scott's tragic 1910-12 expedition to Antarctica. Dr. Wilson chose Bowers and Cherry-Garrard as his companions for a winter journey in 1911 to Cape Crozier to collect Emperor Penguin eggs. "On their return five weeks later Scott described their journey as 'the hardest that has ever been made'--a phrase which later suggested to Cherry-Garrard the title of his narrative of the fortunes of the whole expedition: The Worst Journey in the World" (DNB). When at the base, Cherry-Garrard edited the camp newspaper, South Polar Times. The following summer he accompanied Scott's polar party as far as the summit of the Beardmore Glacier, helping to establish supply and fuel depots. Scott arrived at the Pole only to find that a Norwegian team had beaten him there by a month. On the return journey, plagued by blizzards and illness, the sledge party perished near One Ton Depot, where their bodies and diaries were found eight months later by a search party that included Cherry-Garrard. "A very literate, detailed account of the expedition... one of the classics of Antarctic literature" (Conrad, 173). "The best written and most enduring account of exploits in the Antarctic" (Taurus 84). Illustrated with sketches made by Edward Wilson, the science officer of the expedition, who died returning from the pole with Scott; with photographs by expedition members Debenham and Wright; and with five maps (four folding). Rare first issue, in original half white cloth and paper-covered boards. Cherry-Garrard "insisted upon that white half-binding, since he wanted his book to look as handsome and as 'Polar' as possible... Only relatively few copies of the first edition were actually bound up... A second issue, bound in durable blue cloth, rapidly made its way onto the market" (Taurus 84). A drama documentary, also entitled The Worst Journey In The World, written by and starring Mark Gatiss, was broadcast on BBC Four in April 2007. It was also adapted by Stef Penney for the BBC as a two-part radio drama directed by Kate McAll in 2008.

The Principle of Relativity with applications to Physical Science.

Cambridge: University Press. 1922. 8vo. Original blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine; pp. xii + 190, diagrams to text; minimal rubbing to head and foot of spine, near fine. Provenance: ffep with pencil signature of the author's daughter Jessie Whitehead, herself well-known as a mountaineer, Arabist and pipe-smoking eccentric. First edition. Whitehead's critique of Einstein is an attempt to harmonise the theory of relativity with common sense. He makes some important points about the problems of measurements raised by Einstein's theory. These lead, most importantly, to Whitehead's own theory of gravitation, an alternative hypothesis in which the geometric structure of the universe is based on fixed a priori spatio-temporal relationships. Whitehead's theory was considered a genuine rival to general relativity until the 1970s, when empirical observations proved it to be impossible in practice.

Hugh John Lofting (14 January 1886 - 26 September 1947) was a British author, trained as a civil engineer, who created the character of Doctor Dolittle, one of the classics of children's literature. He traveled widely as a civil engineer, before enlisting in the Irish Guards regiment of the British Army to serve in the First World War. Not wishing to write to his children about the brutality of the war, he wrote imaginative letters which later became the foundation of the successful Doctor Dolittle novels for children. Hugh Lofting's character of Doctor John Dolittle, was an English physician from Puddleby-on-the-Marsh in the West Country - who could speak to animals. The character first saw light in the author's illustrated letters to children, written from the trenches during the War of 1914 to 1918, when actual news, he later said, was either too horrible or too dull. The stories are set in early Victorian England in the 1820s-1840s (The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle gives a date of 1839). The Story of Doctor Dolittle: Being the History of His Peculiar Life at Home and Astonishing Adventures in Foreign Parts Never Before Printed (1920) began the series and won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958. The sequel The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922) won Lofting the prestigious Newbery Medal. Eight more books followed, and after Lofting's death two more volumes appeared, composed of short unpublished pieces. The internal chronology of the books is somewhat different from the publishing order. The first book is followed by Doctor Dolittle's Post Office (1923), Doctor Dolittle's Circus (1924) and Doctor Dolittle's Caravan (1926). Only then follows the second book, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922), continued by Doctor Dolittle's Zoo (1925). After that, the publishing order is restored; Doctor Dolittle's Garden (1927) is followed by Doctor Dolittle in the Moon (1928) and Doctor Dolittle's Return (1933), ending with Doctor Dolittle and the Secret Lake (1948). The series has been adapted for film and television many times, for stage twice, and for radio too. Our great friend of nearly fifty years, Leslie Bricusse wrote the song "Talk to the Animals" for which he won the Oscar for 'Best original Song' at the 1968 academy awards. "If we could talk to the animals, learn all their languages, Maybe take an animal degree, We'd study elephant and eagle, buffalo and beagle, Alligator, guinea pig, and flea!"

        Der Bräutigam. Lithographie.

Signiert "Rudolf Schlichter". Teils etwas doublierender Druck auf chamoisfarbenem Simili-Japan. 41 x 31 cm (blattgroß). Söhn HDO 72711-9. Eines von 125 Exemplaren. Blatt 9 aus: Die Schaffenden. III. Jahrgang, 3. Mappe, 1922.

        Jacob's Room.

Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, Richmond., 1922. First edition: one of about forty ''A Subscriber'' copies with the printed and autograph slip to this effect tipped onto the front free endpaper. Octavo. 290 pages. 14-page publishers' catalogue at rear. Mustard cloth with title label to spine. The label in this copy is inscribed by Virginia Woolf to Mrs Arnold-Forster who is better known to literary history under her maiden name Ka Cox (Katherine Laird Cox). She had been one of the more important of Rupert Brooke's lovers, with their break-up in 1912 creating such emotional turmoil in him that he fled abroad. The rift occurred early that year at Lulworth where a group of Cambridge Fabians had gathered for a reading weekend. Cox confessed her growing attraction to the painter Henry Lamb and plunged Brooke into a confusion of sexual jealousy mingled with the conviction that it was the manipulations of Lytton Strachey that had brought about this disaster. Later Brooke wrote from Cannes to Virginia Woolf, ''What tormented and crucified figures we literary people are! God! How I hate the healthy unimaginative hard shelled dilettanti, like James [Strachey] and Ka. It was a pity you couldn't come to the House Party long, long ago at Lulworth - not that you'd have enjoyed it: it was too horrible. But you might have made all the difference...'' Cox went on to marry the painter and writer Will Arnold-Forster. She died of a stroke in 1938. Ka Cox was always a close friend of Virginia Woolf, regularly appearing in the Diaries and Letters; in fact it was later in that fateful year 1912 that she nursed Woolf through one of her more devastating mental collapses. Some spotting to free endpapers. Some small snags to tail of spine. Covers a bit marked and dusty. Very good. These subscriber copies were not issued in dustwrappers.
