Fort Clark. On the Missouri (February 1834)

[Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922. Aquatint engraving by Lucas Weber after Bodmer. Tear to left blank margin not affecting plate area. From the scarce Leipzig edition printed from the original copper-plates. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.18) A fine mid-winter scene: the bleakness of the frozen winter landscape broken by the constant flow of figures back and forth across the iced-over Missouri. Fort Clark is visible in the left mid-distance, warmly wrapped in their buffalo robes the Mandan women in the foreground carry their burdens up past the watchful warriors, out on the frozen river a line of figures make their way back and forth. In response to the pressures of the raids of neighbours the Mandan Tribe had consolidated their people in two main villages: Mih-Tutta-Hang-Kusch and Ruhptare. Mih-Tutta-Hang-Kusch, the largest of these can be seen in the distance across the Missouri to the right of the fort. Each settlement maintained a winter and a summer village, but, as this scene shows, there was constant traffic between the two. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures. David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint /Spring 1985, p.18. Cf.Graff 4648; cf. Howes M443a; cf. Pilling 2521; cf. Sabin 47014; cf. Wagner-Camp 76:1.

Raabe 167. - Nr. 25 von 300 Ex. (GA 350).

114 Songs (First Edition)

Redding, CT: Charles Ives, 1922. First Edition. First Edition. Second issue, in publisher's blue cloth with titles and rule in gilt on the front board and spine, and with pages 37-39 printed, and no dust jacket as issued. Fine condition. A collection of avant-garde short pieces in every imaginable format (marches, violin sonatas, group sing-a-longs, etc.) written by Ives using the poetry of Walt Whitman, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Wordsworth, Keats, James Fenimore Cooper, and others as lyrics. Notable as much for musical content as for the long essay by Ives at the rear regarding his typically involved conceptual intentions for this particular gathering of compositions. An eccentric publication by one of our greatest and certainly most eccentric twentieth century composers.

Verlag: München, Asokthebu O.W. Barth, 1922. 1 Bl., 156 S., 12 Bl. First state, no. 327 of 500 copies with flexible boards, limitation number 5 mm, "mountain" correctly spelled on page 41, etc. The first issue is identified as being in the first 500 or so numbered copies, as having flexible boards (as opposed to stiff) and by maintaining the 5mm font size on the stamped numbers on the colophon. This copy meets all of those first issue points.(Gallup A6b; McBride 26; Hayward 332). Arguably the greatest long poem of the 20th century. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase.. 1st Edition.         Ulysses.

Paris: Shakespeare and Company,, 1922. Large quarto in eights. Original blue-green wrappers, titles to front wrapper in white, entirely unopened. Housed in a blue morocco-backed book-form slipcase and chemise. Some minor and very typical chafing to the folds of the wrappers, negligible loss at the tips, minor surface wear at the spine but a superb copy of the largest and most vulnerable of the three formats in which the first printing was issued. First edition, first printing, number 130 of 150 large paper copies numbered between 101 and 250. Ulysses was published in imitation of the traditional three-tiered French format aimed at both connoisseurs and readers: 100 copies were printed on Dutch handmade paper and signed by Joyce; 150 copies were printed on heavier vergé d'Arches to create this large paper format; and the remaining 750 copies formed a small format trade issue, printed on less expensive vergé à barbes stock. With its generous margins, the large paper issue is the most aesthetically pleasing of the three.

        Ulysses (Signed)

Paris: Shakespeare and Co, 1922. First edition. The smallest limitation within the first printing, number 6 of 100 copies on Dutch handmade paper, signed by the author. Originally purchased by Lady Rothermere (Lilian Share), the wife of Harold Harmsworth, the tabloid baron, and who was a literary patron of T. S. Eliot, translator and general literati. Apparently bound for Lady Rothermere (judging by the age of the binding) in full yellow calf with the wrappers bound in and the top-edge gilt. A fine copy internally, some pages remain unopened. Binding a bit toned on the spine, and minor wear at the extremities otherwise in excellent shape. Housed in a custom clamshell. Joyce's masterwork of modernism, one of the great books of the 20th century. Though it follows a single day in the life of Dubliner Leopold Bloom - June 16th, a day which has since become a worldwide holiday - Ulysses's complex structure is actually inspired by Homer's Odyssey. The book's stream of consciousness prose and its experimental nature were groundbreaking, and many of the techniques Joyce used have since become standard fare. Ulysses took Joyce over seven years to write, and the story of its publication became an epic in itself. The work was first released in serial from 1918 to 1920 in the magazine "The Little Review," and published in Paris in a limited first edition in 1922 by Sylvia Beach, the owner of the Shakespeare and Company bookstore. It was not, however, released in the UK and United States, where the book had quickly been banned. In fact, copies were smuggled into both countries until a landmark obscenity trial cleared the book for American publication in 1934. Joyce claimed that he "put in so many enigmas and puzzles [into Ulysses] that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant, and that's the only way of insuring one's immortality." Time has certainly proven him correct. "Ulysses is the most important contribution that has been made to fictional literature in the twentieth century. It will immortalize its author with the same certainty that Gargantua and Pantagruel immortalized Rabelais, and "The Brothers Karamazov" Dostoevsky. It is likely that there is no one writing English today that could parallel Joyce's feat…" (Contemporary NY Times Review, 1922). Slocum and Cahoon A17.

THE GOLDEN HAMMER AND OTHER ENGINEERING STORIES .

London: Percival Marshall & Co., n.d., [1922] - Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1] 2-188, 22 illustrations in text, original red cloth, front panel stamped in blind and gold, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. "Collection of nine weird and science-fictional tales, eccentric in manner and slightly amateurish, though with imaginative ideas. The author was evidently a professional engineer and published a number of nonfictional works on that subject, ensuring authentic 'local color' for these stories, all of which involve an intersection between the mechanical and the occult. The illustrations are quite professional and atmospheric. An admirably oddball collection." - Robert Eldridge. Day, The Supplemental Checklist of Fantastic Literature, p. 58. Not in Reginald or either of the Bleiler Checklists. Not in Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy (I-III). Early owner's signature dated 1925 on half-title page. Magazine clipping about the Great Western Railway locomotive "Winnipeg" affixed to front free endpaper, spine panel faded, binding leaned, cloth a little faded, gold stamping tarnished, a good copy of a rare book.         Tombs of Assiniboin Indians on Trees

[Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by Aubert père after Bodmer. From the scarce Leipzig edition printed from the original copper-plates. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.18) An elemental scene painted by Bodmer on July 4, 1833, with the quiet spirituality of the place disturbed by the prowling wolves at the foot of the tree burials. The travelers aboard the steamer Assiniboine arrived at Fort Union, the uppermost point for steamer traffic just above the junction of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers, on June 24, 1833, after a journey of seventy-five days up the Missouri River from St. Louis. They stayed until July 6, when they departed upriver by keelboat for Fort McKenzie. The Assiniboins, like the Sioux, frequently placed their dead on platforms secured to scaffolds or tree limbs: here the quietness of the place is emphasized by the luxuriant trees and undergrowth surrounding the clearing in which the burial stands. They arrived in Boston in July 1832, traveled on to Philadelphia, where they stayed with Napoleon Bonaparte's elder brother Joseph. From here they headed west across Pennsylvania across the Alleghenies to Pittsburgh and the Ohio country, visiting all the important German settlements en route. Their most important stop on their route west was at the utopian colony of New Harmony in Indiana. The Prince spent five months there in the company of some of the country's leading scientific men, and studying all the relevant literature on backcountry America. On 24 March 1833 the party reached St. Louis, Missouri, and the start of the journey into Indian country. David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint /Spring 1985, p.18.       Alfred A. Knopf, 1922. Hardcover. Very Good. From a single owner collection, this is a lovely copy from Sept. 1922 (with "Second Printing" statement) of the FIRST TRADE EDITION of Cather's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel WITH the extremely hard to find DJ (blue-green variant). In 459 pages, orange top stain to outer page edges; all points in book & DJ verified. The actual First Edition was bound in cream cloth, signed, & slipcased. For whatever reason, this First Trade Edition with a FIRST STATE DJ is incredibly scarce! Hardcover has light brown cloth over boards with orange lettering & gilt to front & spine. Former owner's name & address on ffep in a lovely cursive script; NO other writing, underlining, or highlighting; NOT ex-lib. FLAWS: former owner's bookplate inside front cover. Slightly bumped corners, mild rubbing to extremities. The very scarce, unclipped Green DJ (w/orig. $2.50 price on bottom front flap) is Good, marred by1) significant chipping to head of spine & corners,2) spine fading, 3) more minor edgewear all around. Requisite 3 reviews on back cover, Borzoi Books description & Knopf mailing list on rear flap (which has a large chip missing!), & publisher's blurb on front flap (all required points).         Personnages de Comédie.

Paris Chez Meynial 1922 - Quarto (37 x 8.5 cm.) 34 unnumbered leaves; 2 blank leaves, 31 leaves of text and illustration, final blank leaf. Illustrated half-title with colour wood-engraved design by Barbier, limitation verso, title with colour wood-engraved Harlequin vignette, 12 full- and 2 half-page wood-engraved colour plates, 22 woodengraved colour four-line initials as well as decorative devices in the text, many heightened in silver and gold, final wood-engraved colour vignette, list of plates and colophon; each leaf of text surrounded by decorative frame; the cover illustration is repeated on the half-title. Illustrations engraved in wood by F.-L. Schmied and printed in collaboration with Pierre Bouchet and Louis Bracons, loose as issued within illustrated wrapper. A fine copy of this important collaboration between Barbier and Schmied, from the edition limited to 150 copies, signed by Barbier in pencil. One of the most important works by Barbier, rivalled only by his Le bonheur du jour. Albert Flament's text of 1914 is a diffuse meditation, half-waking and half-dreaming, which takes as its point of departure the great roles of world theatre. Barbier's vignettes have a general relevance to the theme of acting, but most of his plates, at least one of which dates from 1916, are simply magnificent decorative compositions. George Barbier (1882-1932), was the supreme decorative designer of art deco, whose art centred on the human figure, displayed in a thousand different settings and costumes. He had the faculty, as Valéry wrote, of embodying myth through images in such a way that workers in mere words could only look on in awe. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Photo Album]: Farm Life and Farm Equipment in Upstate New York

[Lancaster, New York 1922 - Oblong folio. Measuring 12.25" x 10.25". [110]pp. Very good contemporary limp textured black leather photo album with some chipping and edgewear, and lacking the spine, still a sound album with sharp photos in excellent condition. 227 original gelatin silver photographs, ranging between 3" x 5" and 5" x 7", most are glued down, a few tipped-in with black corners, and many with captions beneath in white ink.An outstanding photo album filled with over 200 original silver gelatin photos exhibiting the Beck family farm, as well as some interesting images of the Moline farm engines and equipment used and sold by Irvin Beck for George Beck & Sons, as well as some later images when he was a salesman for United States Tires in upstate New York, all during the opening two decades of the 20th Century. This album provides an insightful visual record of the compiler's career as both a farmer and a farm equipment salesman, with many particularly pleasing images of the Beck family farm. Beck began working at a young age on the family farms of his father George Beck, and his maternal grandparents, the Bruncks in Lancaster, New York. The album opens with an image of Moline Corn Binders awaiting delivery outside of the George Beck & Sons sales building, and then shows numerous photo images of Moline 7 horsepower and 9 horsepower gasoline engines employed to load oat bales, splitting and dragging logs, and providing power on the various farms, and even providing power to Herman Brunck's sawmill.Beck had an obvious fascination for machinery, as evidenced by the number of photos showing various Ford Model T 4-doors and coupes, and a few depicting the trailer for delivering farm equipment such as plows, gasoline engines, and corn binders. Other images are present of the Moline Model C Tractor, a Moline Model D tractor, a 1916 contest where the Moline Flying Dutchman plow defeated the Oliver plow, a wrecked Mack Truck; a woman (possibly his wife) sitting on a 1915 Harley Davidson V-Twin motorcycle with coil springs in front forks and other add-ons; and even images of delivering a corn binder to the Syracuse, New York Fair in September, 1920.The album also contains photos of drilling for gas on Handy Farm in 1916 with the drilling derrick and equipment, replacing a windmill in 1921, the Moline Universal Tractor and New Idea Spreader at the Batavia Fair, Batavia, New York in 1920, and more. The family farm and the equipment sales appear to have generated a good standard of living as evidenced by the quality of the automobiles, equipment, farm buildings, and the vacations the family afforded at Niagara Falls, Alden, Olcott Beach, Conesus Lake, N.Y., and the Ebenezer Colony Dams in West Seneca, N.Y. After World War I, Beck began selling automobile supplies, accessories, and tires for the United States Tires Company as well. At the time, the company focused on selling pneumatic rubber tires for trucks, and heavy equipment. Of particular interest are a wonderful series of 10 photos he has included exhibiting United States Tires Company advertising billboards across New York State, including Niagara Falls, Geneva, Hopewell, Lima, Pembroke, Seneca Falls, and Ithaca. He would eventually become an automobile dealer and salesman during the 1930s.Pleasing and well composed images giving a good overview of a farmer and salesman in New York State.         Indian Utensils and Arms

[Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by A. Zschokke and Hürlimann after Bodmer. From the scarce Leipzig edition printed from the original copper-plates. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.18) An important ethnographical record centering on Bodmer's careful drawing of a buffalo robe decorated by the Mandan Chief Mató-Tópe with a depiction of several of his exploits including a hand-to-hand battle with a Cheyenne Chief (the original was purchased by Prince Maximilian and is now in the Linden-Museum in Stuttgart, Germany). Surrounding the robe are various other objects, including a pipe that had belonged to Dipäuch, a respected elder of the Mandan Tribe, as well as a snow-shoe, a fashioned ermine skin and a knife in a bead-fringed scabbard. David C.
