        Cy Comencent Les Chroniques de Jherusalem Abregies [manuscript facsimile of the original Chronicles of the Crusades in the Austrian National Library]

      [Vienna 1922 - (21 x 11 inches). 34 pages, on fine vellum, written in a batarde hand in red and black ink. 2 full-page and 83 half-page, quarter-page, and column width miniatures illuminated in full color and burnished gold, numerous illuminated initials, all within alternating red and blue borders with gold decoration. Original vellum over bevelled oak boards. Housed in a black morocco backed box. Provenance: Ralph C. Runyon (letters by the artist laid in) Astounding manuscript facsimile of a celebrated illuminated manuscript account of the Second Crusade. The Croniques de Jherusalem is among the prized possessions of the Austrian National Library. The richly illuminated codex, of which this manuscript is a painstaking exact copy, was prepared on behalf of Phillip the Good, (also known as Phillip III, Duke of Burgundy) circa 1450. Recent scholarship has attributed the original to the Master of Girart de Rouissillon, naming the codex as among his finest works. Phillip the Good is best remembered for his extravagant court, his taste for luxury and his patronage of the arts. During his reign, some six hundred illuminated manuscripts were commissioned, including the Croniques de Jherusalem. The original manuscript came into possession of Emperor Mathias and was passed down by inheritance to Emperor Max I, being notable enough to be mentioned in the inventory of the Treasury at that time. In the mid-18th century, the codex passed to the Imperial Library, later to be renamed the National Library. In 1922, artist, antiquary and publisher Annete von Eckardt was given permission to copy the famed manuscript, which to that time had not been reproduced. Von Eckardt, perhaps best known for her relationship with Franz Marc, was an extraordinary artist and colourist, as evidenced by this manuscript. In a note laid in, Eckardt describes the two year process by which she accomplished the work: "The original miniatures are shown very rarely and only by exceptional permission. Thanks to the kindness of the Director Herr Smital for two long years of tedious work it was possible to copy leaf by leaf with the aid of a magnifying glass. Again and again every detail of the work was compared with the original, while the precious leaves were kept under a protecting sheet of glass. Great difficulties were produced by the poor light in the library, which being situated in the old in period castle is entirely equipped in the style of the middle ages. Of course to execute the minute work of the miniatures no ordinary water-colours could be used: the lapis lazuli blue, scarlet red, turquois green had to be prepared with the aid of the yellow of eggs, honey, etc. etc. All the gold consists of pure gold and is finished by polishing with an agate style and will never tarnish. Such difficult and tedious copying of precious and antique masterpieces can hardly be expected, if at all, more than once. Therefore, this exquisite work of art, the Chronology of the Crusades, will ever be increasing in value as time goes on." An extraordinary work of art. Cf. Aleksei Gan's Constructivism was the first theoretical work of constructivist movement and became its declaration. He defined its three core principles - tectonics, texture and construction which made artists and architects in his words 'constructors' who must focus on the fusion of art with everyday life to create a system of design where ''everything will be conceived in a technical and functional way'' - a fitting contribution to the great task of building the new communist society. Aleksei Gan (1893-1942) was a Russian avant-grade artist and art theorist, a key figure among Russia's post-revolutionary avant-garde, working across theatre, architecture, graphics and cinema. The book was penned, typeset and printed by Gan himself. His layout is one of the first experiments in Constructivist typography and graphic design. Tyson, a former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, denounces the bill as an attempt by the federal government to intrude on states' rights.       Kensignton, Ohio, 1922. Near Fine. Oblong octavo. String-tied gray cloth over paper boards with "Photographs" stamped on the front boards. An album of 68 sepia toned photographs each measuring 1.5" x 2.5" each captioned by hand. Near fine with slight fading on the boards with about fine or better photos. A photo album kept by a citizen of Kensington, Ohio documenting the construction of a railroad undergrade bridge overpass in 1922. The photos show the sights of the town including Town Hall and "Charley Bixby's Famous Boiled Liver Restaurant and Hotel Deluxe" before showing the work being done on the railroad in September of 1922. Throughout the album are photos of equipment such as concrete mixers and pile drivers, newly erected abutments, and men working on the tracks. The photographer was likely part of the work crew as the captions are full of quips and nicknames, for instance one page is dedicated to "the professor." One photo of three workers sitting on the tracks is captioned, "prutty durn hot" and another reads, "cuple of sheeks?"A unique view of a town wide project and the men who made it happen.

This rare and highly attractive wall map of Brazil was commissioned by the Jornal do Brasil, a leading daily newspaper, to commemorate the centenary of the independence of the country (Brazil attained its sovereignty from Portugal in 1822). The map was published in São Paulo by the cartography division of Companiha Litographica Ypiranga, a popular printer of books and ephemera.The map is beautifully designed, showcasing all of Brazil in it majesty. Each of the republic’s 22 divisions (20 states, 1 territory, and 1 Federal District), are defined in their own bright colours, with their new limits according to the 1921 Brazilian Conference on Interstate Boundaries (as explained in the text, lower-left corner). The capital of Brazil was then Rio de Janeiro, with the Federal District comprising of only a tiny (1.164 sq. km) portion of Rio’s old town. Moreover, the map depicts the rectangular ‘Futuro Districto Federal’, carved out of Goiás state, in Central Brazil, being the recently designated future site of Brasilia (which would not become the national capital until 1960). The ‘Convencoes’ table, lower-left, identifies symbols used the designate various levels of major cities and towns (including state capitals); the locations of lighthouses; the delineation of overland and submarine telegraph lines and radio telegraph stations; the routes of railway lines (solid red lines – completed; intermittent red – under construction); as well as oceanic and inland shipping routes. In the lower-right corner of the map is a magnificent cartouche, festooned with national symbols, containing portraits of the rulers of Brazil since 1822: including its two emperors (Dom Pedro I & II) and its eleven presidents (Brazil became a republic in 1889), including the dates of their administration. Below is a fascinating statistical table, detailing the population, land area, population density, capital cities (with their populations) of each Brazilian state; all according to the 1920 census. Brazil then had a population of 30.636 million (against today’s 210 million!). Additionally, in the lower-left corner, the map is adorned with a view of the Jornal do Brazil’s grand headquarters, in Rio de Janeiro. The newspaper was established in 1891, in the wake of the nation becoming a republic. Under the influence of one of its founders, the famous writer Joaquim Nabuco, the Jornal quickly became one of Brazil’s most popular conservative dailies, being both immensely influential and controversial. By 1922, it had shed it scrappy image, and was a cornerstone of the Brazilian media establishment, a role it still occupies to this very day. The present special Centennial Edition of the map is third edition of the Mappa do Brasil series issued for the Jornal do Brasil. The first issue was published in 1911 by the firm of Hartmann-Reichenbach. The present third edition is more decorative and vibrant than the first, having been printed by Litographica Ypiranga of São Paulo (founded in 1901), a trendy, rising star of the Brazilian publishing industry. Due to its ephemeral nature, all editions of the Jornal’s Mappa do Brasil are very rare today. The present 1922 Centennial Edition seems to be especially scarce; we can trace the existence of only a couple of other examples.       [Paris: Printed in Dijon by Maurice Darantière for Contact Publishing Co.], [1922]. 8vo. 288pp. Original printed French-folded wrappers, uncut and unopened. A beautiful, fresh copy with only a few areas of palest discoloration along the spine. FIRST EDITION, one of approximately 300 copies privately printed of McAlmon's second book (preceded by a collection of poetry) and the first book issued by his own Contact Publishing Co. This copy includes the broadside "From an h'English Printer to an English Publisher" laid-in. The Dijon printer Maurice Darantière printed this shortly before he completed work on Joyce's 'Ulysses.' McAlmon had assisted Joyce in the typing of the manuscript for that novel, reordering some of the material in the Penelope episode due to difficulties in interpreting Joyce's handwriting. Born in the American midwest, McAlmon expatriated to Paris where he was closely allied with Joyce, Stein, Hemingway, Williams, and many other Modernists. His publishing company published Hemingway's first book, Three Stories and Ten Poems, among other highlights of the period. In his memoir, McAlmon recalled that Joyce said these stories reminded him of his own 'Dubliners' and suggested the title 'A Hasty Bunch' "because he found my American use of language racy" (p.33). The gay story "A Boy's Discovery" is among the more sexually explicit.

In 1917, together with the brothers Zbigniew and Andrzej Pronaszko, he organized an exhibition of Polish Expressionist works in Krakow, and their group later became known as the Polish Formists. They merged various aspects of the European avant-garde including Cubism, Futurism, and Expressionism. Until the group's break-up in 1922, Czyzewski was their primary artist and theoretician as well as the joint editor of the journal Formisci. He was also a co-founder of the Polish Futurist clubs and published Futurist-inspired visual poetry. As of December 2017, WorldCat locates six holdings in North America.

Darstellungsgröße 29,5:39,5 cm, Blattgröße 34:45,4 cm. 1901–04 Studium an der Kunstakademie Dresden bei Osmar Schindler (1867-1927), Richard Müller (1874-1954), Carl Bantzer (1857-1941) und Gotthard Kuehl (1850-1915). 1904 – nach dem Tod seiner Mutter - Übersiedlung aus gesundheitlichen Gründen nach Zinnwald im Erzgebirge, das ihm auch in künstlerischer Hinsicht zur zweiten Heimat wird, weshalb er seinem Familiennamen den Ortsnamen „Zinnwald" hinzufügte. 1919 heiratete er Marie Helene Papst aus Oberrochwitz und zog vom Erzgebirge nach Rochwitz. Die Hochzeitsreise führte nach Garmisch-Partenkirchen und es entstanden zahlreiche Farbholzschnitte in dieser Zeit. 1922 Urlaubsreisen nach Italien und Frankreich und Geburt des Sohnes Gustav. Reisen in die Schweiz, nach Wengen, Zermatt und St. Moritz unternahm er 1932-1936. 1969, seine Frau war inzwischen verstorben, zog er nach Krefeld, wo sein Sohn lebte.

        The Wonderful Adventures of Little Prince Toofat

      The James A. McCann Company, New York 1922 - 4to, (10 1/2 x 12 1/8"), blue-grey gilt and pictorial cloth. Each page of text has pale green line illustrations by Lawson. There are pictorial headpieces done in black, decorative initials, pictorial endpapers plus 6 incredibly fanciful color plates that are rich in color and in detail. The rear board is stained with loss of surface sheen; the half-title is hand-colored; there is a neat ownership name on the reverse of the first plate, followed by a lengthy pencil note on apparently an unrelated issue. First edition of an exceedingly scarce children's book, this is a fantasy tale about Little Prince Toofat and Himself who travel to the fairy land of Looking Glass. First serialized in the Delineator and subsequently published as a book, Lawson reportedly was not proud of this magical work which "shows the influence of Arthur Rackham and W. Heath Robinson so evident in Lawson's later illustrations " (Gardner: Robert Lawson on My Shelves p.9). Overall a very good copy of Lawson's first book, his rarest and most elusive.       1922. Hi, This lot is an Original 1922 Hardback Wisden . I see a lot of 22 Hardbacks and 95% are always a bit ropey, this one however for the year is in Excellent condition. As good as my own. The boards are nice and clean and the gilt very bright, the front hinge is strong but not springy and a cm of mesh can be seen at the base. The pastedowns are very bright and the rear hinge is springy (usually both are broken on a '22) Very clean pages inside. By far superior to many of the same year. Nice photoplate, Very Hard to find in good condition, this is not too far off excellent.

Signed by author on preface in bold black ink and by illustrator on frontispiece. 322 pp. Original gilt-ruled half vellum and orange cloth with leather spine label lettered in gilt, gilt top stain, marbled endpapers. Very Good, lacking jacket, with heavy foxing to edges and occasionally, much lighter, to text. Vellum lightly scuffed and soiled, cloth pulling away a bit from it, as is typical. A deluxe limited edition of the first fantasy novel by Lord Dunsany (Edward J.M.D. Plunkett). It was titled Don Rodriguez: Chronicles of Shadow Valley in its American trade edition.
