        War and the Arme Blanche.

London: Edward Arnold,, 1910. With an introduction by the Right Hon. Field-Marshal Earl Roberts. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Spine darkened, boards stained and discoloured, head of spine frayed. A good copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the politician and journalist Leo Amery on the verso of the front free endpaper: "To L. S. Amery, from Erskine Childers. April 10, 1910." Leo Amery was Childers's neighbour and editor of The Times's History of the War in South Africa, for which he persuaded Childers to prepare volume five. The two men were initially exponents of Imperial unity, though later in life they diverged ideologically. Childers became a fanatical supporter of the Irish Home Rule movement, while Amery supported the transfer of power in India and advanced national independence movements in Asia and Africa.

        Mafarka il futurista.

Milan: Edizioni Futuriste di "Poesia",, 1910. Romanzo. Traduzione dal Francese di Decio Cinti. Octavo. Original orange printed wrappers. Spine lightly toned, slightly rolled and a little creased. An excellent copy of this fragile publication. First Italian edition of Marinetti's uncommon first novel, translated by his personal secretary. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed flamboyantly on the front free endpaper: "al caro e intelligentissimo amico dei futuristi, Koltonski" ("to the dear and intelligent friend of the Futurists, Koltonski"), and accompanied by a Futuristic lightning sketch of "Futuris Marinetti" pricking the sagging bubble of "Passatismo" (Traditionalism). A significant association: "Aleksander Koltonski [(1882-1964) Polish writer and translator], who was a resident in Italy and can be considered a protagonist in popularizing Futurism in Poland, issued a summary of the manifestos on Futurist music by Francesco Balilla Pratella and Luigi Russolo. Koltonski was clearly familiar with the collection I manifesti del futurismo. Prima serie (1914) and demonstrated his extensive knowledge in a groundbreaking article, entitled On Futurism as a Cultural and Artistic Movement, which also included an excerpt from Mariinetti's Zang Tumb Tumb... Koltonski emphasized the importance of Futurism for the political-cultural development of Italy, the innovatory character of its aesthetics, and the movement's fertilizing effect on life and art" (Przemyslaw Strozek, "Marinetti is foreign to us": Polish Responses to Italian Futurism in International Yearbook of Futurism Studies, 2011, volume I p. 89). Originally published in French (Paris: Sansot, 1909) as Mafarka le futuriste: roman africain. There would appear to be a number of issues of this first Italian edition: our copy (and others noted in OCLC) have "10o migliaio" (or "10th thousand") printed on the front cover; Copac notes a copy (Leeds University) with "11th thousand" and we know of a copy calling itself "6th thousand". These are all generally regarded as fictional. Mafarka, set in an imaginary African country, brought Marinetti to trial for obscenity. He was acquitted and the furore helped to put Futurism on the cultural map. Koltonski has made two neat inscriptions in Polish that appear to touch on the trial, saying that the book was "confiscated on moral grounds". .

Opus divinum, cui titulus historiae naturalis, multoqua[m] antehac unqua[m] prodiit in luce[m] castigatius, una cu[m] annotationibus Hermanolai Barbari ...Paris, Jean Petit (colophon: Nicolaus Sauetier), 1526. 2 parts in 1 volume (bound in reverse order). Folio. With title-page printed in red and black to the main work (bound second) and title-page to the index (bound first), both in woodcut border in four pieces. Contemporary or near contemporary calf, with the boards richly blind-tooled in a panel design; rebacked with part of the original backstrip laid down.

Bird 1910; USTC (2 copies); not in Adams; BMC French; Durling; Hunt; Wellcome. Very rare first Paris edition of Historiae naturalis , with the annotations by Hermolaus Barbarus. Pliny's Natural history is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman Empire to the modern day and purports to cover the entire field of ancient knowledge, based on the best authorities available at the time. It encompasses the fields of botany, zoology, astronomy, geology and mineralogy as well as the exploitation of those resources. It remains a standard work for the Roman period and the advances in technology and understanding of natural phenomena at the time. Pliny's accounts of some technical advances are the only sources for those inventions, such as hushing (using water to wash away soil) in mining technology or the use of water mills for crushing or grinding grain. Archaeological excavations have confirmed much of what he wrote. ''We know from Pliny that there were important pearl fisheries in the Gulf … Pliny identifies Tylos (Bahrain) as a place famous for its pearls … [He] attests that pearls were the most highly rated valuable in Roman society, and that those from the Gulf were specially praised … The pearl related finds at the site of El-Dur indicate the site was integrated into the maritime trade routes linking the Roman Empire, the Persian Empire, India and South Arabia'' (Carter). Book 6 holds a chapter that gives the first detailed account of the regions around the Gulf, including what are now Qatar, the Emirates and Oman. Hermolaus Barbarus (1454-1494) was an Italian Renaissance scholar. His discussions of Pliny's Naturalis Historia was first published as Castigationes Plinianae in 1492, in which he made over 5000 corrections to the original text. Due to this work and other classical works he translated or edited he was considered a leader authority on Latin and Greek work on antiquity. With manuscript inscriptions on title-page. The two parts bound in reverse order. Binding rebacked and restored, but with most of the central tooling on the boards still clear. Text in very good dcondition, with only a couple marginal waterstains and some minor thumbing.

Indeed, in 1914 she illustrated Morris' Early Poems. The majority of her work was executed for publishers Blackie and Son. Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894) was an English poet who wrote a variety of romantic, devotional, and children's poems. She is best known for her long poem Goblin Market, her love poem Remember, and for the words of the Christmas carol In the Bleak Midwinter.

Although the binding is not signed it is most probably the work of Stikeman & Co. of New York. Minimal rubbing to extremities otherwise a very fine set of the definitive edition of Morris's works. William Morris (1834-1896), "English designer, poet, and early socialist, whose designs for furniture, wallpaper, and other decorative products generated the Arts and Crafts Movement. Through his friendship with the poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Morris was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, whose interest in medieval subjects was reflected in Morris' poetry as well as his designs... As a poet, he first achieved fame and success with the romantic narrative The Life and Death of Jason (1867). Other works of this period were The Earthly Paradise (1868-70), a series of narrative poems based on classical and medieval sources; the exquisitely illuminated Book of Verse (1870); and his principal poetic achievement, the epic Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Niblungs (1876), written after a prolonged study of the Old Norse sagas... [Morris] became an active socialist; he formed the Socialist League, with its own publication, The Commonweal. There his two finest romances-A Dream of John Ball (1888) and News from Nowhere (1890), an idyllic vision of a rural socialist utopia-appeared. Subsequently, he founded the Hammersmith Socialist Society. Morris founded the Kelmscott Press in 1891, and between that year and 1898 it produced 53 titles in 66 volumes. He designed three typestyles for his press, including Geoffrey Chaucer type, in which The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer was printed during the last years of Morris' life. One of the greatest examples of the art of the printed book, Chaucer is the most highly decorated of the Kelmscott publications" (Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature).

An album of large-format photographs of Canberra at the time of its major expansion in the late 1960s

      - Large oblong quarto (340 x 505 mm), comprising a leaf of text, 2 colour maps, a mounted colour photograph of a painting by Lawrence Daws, and 32 original photographs (each 335 x 495 mm), being 25 of present-day Canberra (one in colour), and 7 of artists' or architects' impressions of future developments (all leaves printed rectos only). Interleaved between most of the photographs is a narrower sheet of explanatory text. Post-bound full morocco lettered in gilt on the front cover; leather slightly rubbed and a little dusty; in excellent condition. Not identified as such, but from the estate of Sir Alexander Russell Downer, politician and diplomat (1910-1981). The album has the look and feel of a deluxe presentation production, not for general distribution. It would appear to be a pictorial precursor to the NCDC's commercial publication, 'Tomorrow's Canberra - Planning for Growth and Change' (ANU Press, 1970), a copy of which comes with this album.         [Photo Album]: African-American Family

, 1910 - 1960. 1910 - 1960. Oblong quarto measuring 8.5" x 12". Brown leather over paper boards with "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 59 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring 1.5" x 1.5" to 6.5" x 8.5" without captions. Near fine photo album with edgewear with very good photographs with some creasing and occasional tape repairs. An African-American family photo album with photographs spanning from about 1910 to the 1960. From the very few captions it can be presumed that the family was from the New Jersey area. The photographs are not in chronological order and begin with photos that appear to be from the late 1950s of cars and children playing. The older photos are mostly portraits of family members posing in nice clothes. One page shows a collection of eight single photos cut from a photo strip of smiling men and women and one child. There are also men in military uniform on an army base which appear to be from the Vietnam-era. On 6.5" x 8.5" photograph shows a group of men who appear to be part of a musical group as they are posed in a way that appears to be more professional. Another 6" x 8" photo shows a group of school children in roughly 1920 posing as a group with Cape May, New Jersey written in a corner. Additionally laid in is a professional photograph of a man from the family graduating from High School.A modest but nice collection of an African-American family over fifty years. .

Chaseki okoshiezu mokuroku [Folding Drawings of the Famous Tea Houses]

Two sets, each of 45 individual highly complex pop-up architectural models, each model secured within a large folding envelope with a manuscript title & manuscript notes regarding each model, written & drawn in black ink. Each set accompanied by a printed list describing each model within the sets, both lists pasted to the inside of the top of each of the two boxes. 90 envelopes (when folded 255 x 170 mm.). The models are made from thick construction paper and preserved in the two original publisher's boxes. [Japan: ca. 1910-20]. A remarkable publication, complete, of extremely complex models for tea ceremony houses (chashitsu) and their related buildings including the floor plans of the various rooms along with pop-up flaps of the walls, benches, shelves, boxes, shutters, awnings, ceilings, etc. The flaps all have highly detailed manuscript notes providing measurements, design details, materials, and function. In Japan, paper pop-up models have been used at least since the sixteenth century as a primary means of communication between carpenters and their patrons, particularly in the construction of tea houses. The pop-up flaps are attached to floor plans of different sizes and designs. There are notes regarding tea houses designed or favored by famous figures and schools in tea ceremony history. The primary folding flaps consist of exterior and interior walls, ceilings, alcoves, and passage-ways. The flaps contain detailed drawings on both sides depicting the interior decor, windows and their decorations, passage-ways, bathrooms, etc. Attached to the wall flaps are more flaps which show smaller room objects including boxes, shelves, display alcoves (tokonoma), benches, etc. The purpose of these pop-up plans was to allow an experienced builder to visualize and construct an entire building from the plans themselves. "The okoshi-ezu has no real counterpart in Western drawing…Okoshi-ezu are extraordinary in that they are both easy to understand and extremely comprehensive - a combination that is usually mutually exclusive in architectural drawing, where legibility tends to decline as the density of information increases. This quality makes okoshi-ezu drawings extremely helpful in studying the buildings they represent. Indeed, okoshi-ezu provided such a complete description of the design that they were often used as the basis for the common practice of copying teahouses; the dimensional and specification information they included meant they could be used as construction drawings. These drawings could communicate so much with so little because their representational qualities were so similar to the actual architecture they represented - thin walls wrapped around cubic spaces to create highly refined and specific compositions of material, space, and light."-Andrew Barrie, "Okoshi-ezu: Speculations on thinness," in Interstices 11 (on-line resource). Sakata was a tea ceremony utensils dealer in Osaka. In fine condition. Some of the outer wrappers are a little foxed. Preserved in two original custom-made wooden boxes.
