London: William Heinemann, 1909. [Antarctic Exploration] FIRST EDITION, in two volumes. Quarto, pp.xlviii; 372; pp.xvi; 419; [1]. Portrait of E. H. Shackleton as frontispiece to first volume, with portrait of the Northern Party at the South Magnetic Pole to second volume. Both are protected with captioned tissue guards. A book which truly embodies the golden age of polar exploration. Although the expedition team was unable to attain its goal of reaching the South Pole, Shackleton and his companions reached 88° 23' S, a point only 180 kilometres (112 miles) from the Pole. Accomplishments also included: the first ascent of Mount Erebus; the location of the Magnetic South Pole by Douglas Mawson, Edgeworth David and MacKay (January 16, 1909); and the discovery of the Beardmore Glacier passage (named after Shackleton's patron). The group was the first to cross the Trans-Antarctic mountain range, and to set foot on the South Polar Plateau. Subsisting on half-rations, Shackleton discovered the party's salvation - a letter declaring that Nimrod would sail on February 26, 1909. In response, the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pidgin English is a non-specific name used to refer to any of the many pidgin languages derived from English. It was originally in China a hybrid language used by Chinese and foreign merchants in the 19th century. The language was popular around the Pidgin area of Shanghai at that time, hence the name. During the spread of English in China, some foreigners who did not know Chinese and Chinese who did not know English, created the Pidgin English, for the purpose of doing business and communicating. Although most of its vocabulary comes from English, its pronunciation is basically based on the Pronunciation system of … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRUN, Emmy Ingeborg
Denmark,, 1909. [1918?]. Papier mâché globe (diameter 140 mm), plaster coating, small area of loss, original ink and body hand-colour, varnish, brass horizon ring, black painted wooden base (overall height 290 mm) [with] brown paper booklet, stab bound, seven photographs, protected by tissue paper, handwritten paper label pasted to inside cover, manuscript notes [and] brown paper booklet, stab bound, photograph protected by tissue paper, manuscript notes. A rare and fascinating manuscript globe of Mars, suggestive of the possibility of Martian civilisation. This example is accompanied by two small handmade booklets, of particular interest because they contain contemporary pictures of the creation of Brun’s globes. The globe and booklets together suggest the social and political impact of contemporary scientific discoveries, and the politicization of inquiries into space. Brun’s inspiration Emmy Ingeborg Brun (1872-1929) was a Danish writer, socialist and astronomer. She had no formal training - her father did not allow her to go to university - and spent long periods of her life bedridden, but was fascinated by the theories of contemporary astronomers Percival Lowell and Giovanni Schiaparelli, and the political scientist Henry George. Improving contemporary scientific observation of Mars was accompanied by a corresponding interest in socio-political thought in the planet as a potential site for socialism or communism. This took the form of fiction, like Alexander Bogdanov’s 1908 novel ‘Red Star’, and was also addressed in scientific theories. In 1855 Schiap … [Click Below for Full Description]

Muir, John; Holland, J.G. (Introductory Poem
Houghton Mifflin Company [The Riverside Press, 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. First printing in book form, duodecimo size, 86 pp., with original dust jacket and publisher's prospectus. Very good / fair. John Muir (1838-1914) remains well-known and beloved today for his work on environmental issues over 100 years ago, and wrote extensively on the west, including Yosemite and the Sierras. He helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas and co-founded the Sierra Club. The original story of Stickeen appeared in "The Century Magazine" in September of 1897, and is considered to be one of the world's great dog stories. According to Kimes, Muir had his adventure with Stickeen in 1880; over the years he wrote and rewrote the story until it was finally published in this format in 1909. The book opens with a poem by Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819-1881) entitled "To My Dog Blanco". Although trained as a medical doctor, Holland spent much of his career as a writer, editor and publisher; he must have been somewhat known in literay circles as he and his wife were friends and corresponded with the poet Emily Dickinson. Although his work is seldom read today he was enormously popular during his lifetime, and one can only assume John Muir himself was a fan as this poem was chosen to open "Stickeen". ___DESCRIPTION: Tan cloth binding, brown lettering on front board and spine, foredge uncut, small vignette of a dog on the title page; duodecimo size (7.5" by 4.75"), pagination: [i-x], [1-2] 3-74, [75, blank] [76, printer's imprint].
