Unpublished lectures from Farrar's course on psychiatric nursing at the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital, accompanied by dedicated work on nursing from former student Sara E. Parsons]

1909-1910, Baltimore 1909 - Twelve typescript lectures, averaging 10 pages each; comprising 130 total pages. Introduced by collective title page ("Tuesday talks for juniors"), dated "October 1909–." Each lecture distinctly foliated and fastened with contemporary paper clips, with minor offsetting. With a handful of annotations to text, both manuscript and typescript. The lectures are accompanied by a presentation copy of NURSING PROBLEMS AND OBLIGATIONS by Sara E. Parsons. Boston: Whitcomb & Barrows, 1916. Purple cloth boards, with gilt lettering to front panel and spine. Contents: xi, [5], 149, [1] pages. With Farrar's bookplate affixed to front endpaper and presentation inscription from Parsons to front pastedown. // "To be a good nurse is first of all to be a good woman." Before becoming the long-time editor of the AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PSYCHIATRY, Clarence B. Farrar accepted a position in 1904 as Assistant Physician and Director of Laboratories at the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital in Baltimore, where he was also an Associate Professor in Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins. He was just returning from two years in Heidelberg, where he studied with Emil Kraepelin, Franz Nissl, and Alois Alzheimer. A year after his arrival in Baltimore, the Sheppard-Pratt would become one of the first institutions to develop a psychiatric nursing program. In its inaugural two-year curriculum, Farrar is listed as delivering a lecture to the junior class entitled "Observations of symptoms" and a senior lecture on Psychology. With the present set of general lectures for 1909 and 1910—entitled "Tuesday talks for juniors"—Farrar emphasized the significance of the nurse's role within the psychiatric institution: "In many cases, it is chiefly the nurse who has been instrumental in doing good, rather than the doctor; the nurse is constantly by the patient’s side and the one towards whom the patient is most likely to turn, so that the nurse, then, is very often chiefly responsible for the patient’s recovery." These pioneering lectures include references to psychiatric history and theory, patient management strategies, case studies, "family skeletons," and a handful of references to compassionate euthanasia. The first two lectures appear to be orphaned from the full 1909 set of lectures, while the remaining ten lectures comprise a complete course of lectures from the following year; given the overlap between these two sets, it's interesting to note how Farrar reshaped his materials. // These lectures are accompanied by a presentation copy of NURSING PROBLEMS AND OBLIGATIONS (1916) by Sara E. Parsons, who was then-Superintendent of the Training School for Nurses at Massachusetts General Hospital. Arriving in Baltimore at the same time as Farrar, Parsons had been hired by Dr. Edward Brush as the organizer for the nursing program. According to Farrar’s reminiscences: "[Brush] secured the best nurse available in the country to start this school." Parsons, it would seem, held Farrar in similar esteem. In her presentation inscription to this copy, she writes: "I waited as long as I could for your book on Ethics and finally did the best I could myself. Your ethics have influenced mine to such a degree that you ought to be interested in my book. Yours faithfully, Sara E." [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

OTTOMAN - IRANIAN BORDER] [Large Folding Lithographed Map, Titled:] Map of the Ottoman-Iranian border [Compiled] by the Special Border Commission. 1325 R.

Harbiye Nezareti, Istanbul 1909 - Large folding lithographed map ca. 159,5x54,5 cm, dissected into 24 compartments and linen backed, borders outlined in colour. With a lithographed title, legend, seals and signatures of the Ottoman Border Commission in the right lower corner. Paper slightly age toned, minor small tears or chipping on the extremities of several compartments slightly affecting the image, but overall a very good map. Historically important large detailed map of the OttomanIranian border based on the survey of the special commission of the Ottoman Ministry of War. The process of demarcation of the border between the Ottoman Empire and the Sublime State of Persia was an ongoing issue from the 16th century, and a subject of three international boundary commissions in the 19 - early 20th centuries (1843-47, 1848-65, 1907-13). The process was largely influenced by Great Britain, Russia, and Germany whose interests concerned the oil exploitation (AngloPersian Oil Company on the Qasr-e ??r?n-Mandal? plateau), railway construction (German-built Baghdad Railway) and general political influence in the region (the echoes of the Great Game). The major outcome of the protocol signed in Constantinople in 1913 was the placement of most of the Shatt al-Arab River under Ottoman control, apart from two anchorages left for Persia, which laid the groundwork for continuous friction over the border. The map is oriented to the east, with Persia occupying its upper part and the Ottoman Empire - the lower part. The border is outlined from the Aras River in the north (where both the Ottoman Empire and Persia bordered Russia) to the Persian Gulf in the south, going through the ridges of the Zagros Mountains in the centre. The map is very detailed, marking all main cities and towns, border forts, rivers, lakes and estuaries, including Lake Van, the Erzurumvilayet (province) and Do?ubayaz?t city of the Ottoman Empire, Persian province of Khuzestan, cities of Tabriz, Marand, Sufyan, Lake Urumiyah, Kermanshah, Meragha, Jarahi River, Buneh Island (Persian Gulf). The lower right corner marks Khorasan, Hawr ad-Dalmaj district, cities of Baakuba, Madein, Baghdad with adjacent regions of Dijlah (Tigris) River and the Shatt al-Arab River running to the Persian Gulf through the contemporary Iraq and Iran. ''The boundary separating the Ottoman and Iranian empires was shaped by conflict over an ill-defined strip of territory with constantly shifting outlines extending from the Caucasus to the Persian Gulf. The consolidation of expansionist Ottoman power and the establishment of the Safavids in Iran in the first half of the 11th/16th century opened a phase in which the two powers continually advanced and retreated across this strip. The deep dissatisfaction of the Iranian government with the arrangements imposed on it in 1331/1913 laid the groundwork for continuing friction over the border along the ?att al-'Arab" (Encyclopedia Iranica online). A rare advertising mail-shot for the American edition of Shackleton'sThe Heart of the Antarctic, being the official account of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09. This persuasive piece of ephemera distills the 'striking features and results' of the expedition (for example: ?Manchurian ponies were used instead of dogs. / A motor-car helped move the supplies across smooth ice. / An acetylene gas plant lighted their winter quarters.? &c.) as well as singing the praises of the authorial style: ?Lieutenant Shackleton writes in an extremely picturesque manner, marked with the simplicity, but enthusiasm, of the real discoverer.? The advertisement reproduces photographic illustrations from the book, including the iconic image of Adams, Wild and Shackleton with the Union Jack at their furthest south point of 88*23', as well as a portrait photograph of the clean shaven young Shackleton on the rear flap, and a reproduction of Stanley L. Wood's illustration ?The trek during the snowstorm? beside the address cover. Mailed out in advance of publication by Lippincott of Philadelphia, this advertisement had a detachable black for the recipient to remove and send to their local bookseller requesting a copy of the publication.

        SONG OF THE ENGLISH

New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, [1909]. First edition. As the English, but bound in olive green cloth rather than the dark blue of the English issue. Sheets and plates all most probably printed in England as this is essentially the same as the English issue but for the colour of the cloth. With 30 color plates tipped-in within ornamental borders, and with black and white drawings on almost every page, all by W. Heath Robinson. Descriptive tissue guards, each with a miniature line illustration. Pictorial title and fifty-nine black and white illustration sin the text. Title printed in red and black. Large 4to, original olive green cloth lettered and elaborately decorated in gilt with fine pictorial designs on the upper cover and spine. An unusally nice copy of this lovely book, the binding and text are both very fine and the plates all pristine and as mint, the cloth and gilt quite bright and very well preserved. FIRST EDITION OF THIS VERY BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORK BY RUDYARD KIPLING. THE W. HEATH ROBINSON ILLUSTRATIONS ARE SUPERB BY ANY MEASURE. The trade edition of this volume was issued to benefit the "Daily Telegraph" National Bands Fund, and includes the text of a speech given by Kipling on the subject: "From the lowest point of view, a few drums and fifes in a battalion are worth five extra miles on a route march...." Robinson's highly sensuous illustrations perfectly complement Kipling's poems of British seafaring around the world. The grand poem, SONG OF THE ENGLISH is followed by six subsidiary poems likely composed while the Kiplings were living in Vermont. The theme underlying much of this collection is that the English are the Chosen under the Lord. This is one of Kipling's earliest verses specifically setting out his vision of the British Empire, and the duties which it imposes on the English people. His definition of 'the English' is wide, certainly embracing the people of the overseas Empire, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, but arguably also the Americans among whom he lived in the years working on the collection. "The next important task I undertook, was the illustration of an edition of Rudyard Kipling's A SONG OF THE ENGLISH to be published...in the year 1908. It became necessary for me to meet the author and discuss the proposed book with him. For this purpose, I traveled down to Burwash where he lived at that time. This was an excursion I shall always remember. I was met a Heathfield and journeyed thence in a motor-car. There were few cars on the road in those days and this in itself was a joyful experience as we drove through the pleasant Sussex lanes. Bateman's, the house at Burwash, where Rudyard Kipling lived, was a fine old building with stone mullioned windows. It was in the midst of wind-blown Sussex country. Three was a faint smell of the sea in the air wafting across the few miles of country from the shore where the Coastwise lights of England watch the ships of England go. It was a fitting setting in which to find the author of A SONG OF THE ENGLISH. He met and entertained me with a quiet affability, which speedily removed the shyness I felt at first in his presence. Before long I was quite at home with him. His own knowledge of illustration gave him an appreciation of the artist's point of view. While making suggestions, he realized that the illustrator must have a free a hand as possible. His sympathetic understanding of my part in the undertaking made me feel tha I was consulting with a brother artist. I spent a happy and for me a helpful day. It was a great inspiration for the work I had in hand to be in such close association with the author's interesting personalty,. i am always glad to remember that he was satisfied with my illustrations to his book."         GINGER & PICKLES

1909 - London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1909. Original pale buff boards decorated in dark green, with color pictorial onlay. First Edition of this tale about a country village store, run by a tom-cat named Ginger and a terrier named Pickles. Ginger and Pickles do very well -- sort of: sales are great, since they provide unlimited credit, but they don't seem to care whether or not they ever get paid. Beatrix Potter based the tale upon an actual shop in Smithy Lane, Sawrey -- close to her Hill Top Farm.~This was the third of her books to be issued in the larger format -- though beginning in 1930 it was reduced in size to the small format, along with "The Tale of" being added to the title (at that time two illustrations were modified to show biscuits and soap available in 1930). Copies were issued in pale olive green or in buff-colored boards; this copy is the latter. Condition is near-fine (spine slightly darkened, but scarcely any wear other than one small mark on the rear cover). Linder p. 428. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Gullivers Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World

J.M. Dent, London 1909 - First Edition, Gullivers Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World illustrated by Arthur Rackham. First Edition, Published by J. M. Dent, London 1909. Gullivers Travels has bright, red cloth boards with bright gilt illustrations. Colour is faded a little on the spine but otherwise the colour is vibrant and clean. Slight bowing of the covers. Binding is tight and square with gold gilt on the top page edge. Contents all clean and mark free. Contains twelve full colour plates, all with intact tissue guards. Also several line drawings and original illustrated end papers. 291 printed pages. Trade edition. Approx 9 x 6". Gullivers Travels is Jonathan Swift's best known full-length work. The classic story is regarded as a children's fantasy adventure story and a satire of society of the time of writing in 1726. The story describes how Gulliver becomes stranded and then captured by the miniature people, the Lilliputian. The story lends itself remarkably well for the fine illustrations of Arthur Rackham. Note: "Most of the designs appeared as line drawings in an edition published by the present publishers in 1899. They have since been worked over, revised, and coloured by the artist, while some entirely new designs have been added. The edition of Gullivers Travels is designed "virginibus puerisque" (for boys and girls). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
