1909. 8vo. 24 by 19 cm. Unpaginated, with 22 pages of pen-and-ink comical drawings, with the last two augmented with red watercoloring of various shades. (Two of the drawings are straight portraits, and so not humorous.) 16 of the drawings have captions. There is a mix of human subjects and anthropormophic ones, with politics being a common thread of a few of the cartoons, and the artist would seem to have had an anti-Progressive bias. At the time, this actually manifest itself with ridicule against the Republican elephant, which in one cartoon is shown carrying a black student on a tusk. Particularly well-rendered are two cartoons featuring alligators, and also a delightful, partly colored illustration entitled "In China Town". Most of the illustrations are done at a high level of proficiency. We suspect a few of the illustrations were based on published material elsewhere, while others are more original in conception. Dating is based on an inscription, "A present to Dear Grandfather". We assume that the present was of the album replete with the illustrations, and not of a blank album which the grandfather then filled. The fashion is also more of the first decade of the 20th century than the second. Scuffs and wear to the full calf binding, but with its gilt border embellishment and title lettering, this is still an uncommonly handsome binding for such an album.

[Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-14]. [CHAUCER, Geoffrey]. BURRELL, Arthur (editor)
London J.M. Dent & Co 1909. London, J.M. Dent & Co., 1909/ 1908. Small octavo; mild signs of use and age; a very good copy. The half-title is inscribed in ink 'From C.W. Mackellar 1911', and carries the inkstamp of the 'Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911. Mackellar's Library'. Campbell Mackellar was a financial supporter of the expedition, and donated a large quantity of books to form the library. Mawson wrote in 'The Home of the Blizzard' that the 'Mackellar Library was a boon to all, and the literature of polar exploration was keenly followed and discussed'. Evidently Chaucer was not as popular, but this may account for the survival of this rare artefact from the expedition. Provenance: Sir Douglas Mawson; by descent. Very Good signed

Limited Edition Condition: Very Good Large two volume set, bound in the original vellum with gilt titling and decoration. Top edges gilt. "Of this Edition, printed in the Cambridge type upon handmade paper, three hundred & fifty copies have been printed, of which three hundred (numbered) are for sale in England and America, and the type has been distributed. Occasional spotting to both volumes but otherwise clean. Guttering exposed between first two blanks of Vol. II but this has no effect on the binding which is firm. There are dents to the spine heads suggesting the books have been knocked, the vellum is not as white as it once was and there's some marking and wear but this is a handsome and presentable set nevertheless. PANKHURST, Christabel
Autograph letter signed on 'Votes for Women' National Women's Social & Political Union headed paper, 31st July 1911; 8vo 6 pages. Pankhurst writes to Noel Buxton Liberal M.P. for North Norfolk, asking him to give a speech in support of the Conciliation Bill. "We very much want you to speak if you will. You would be very fully reported in 'Votes for Women' and so would reach a really large public...." Three Conciliation bills were put before the House of Commons, one each year in 1910, 1911 and in 1912 which would have extended the right of women to vote in the United Kingdom to around 1,000,500 wealthy, property-owning women. The 1910 vote failed. The Bill was debated again in May 1911 and was passed by a majority of 255 to 88 votes as a private member's bill and the Government of Asquith promised a week of government time to debate the Bill. However, in November Asquith announced that he was in favour of a manhood suffrage bill and that suffragists could suggest and propose an amendment that would allow some women to vote. The bill was consequently dropped. This letter was written at a time when the movement was preparing the ground for the third introduction of the Bill in 1912. In the second part of the letter Pankhurst asks Buxton about getting promises to ballot for the Conciliation Bill. "It seems very important to get promises at once because of the attempt that will be made to bring forward another and a different Woman's Suffrage Bill as a rival to the Conciliation Bill." As Christabel feared Asquith stated on 7 November 1911 that the government would introd … [Click Below for Full Description]

This expedition achieved several 'firsts' - the discovery of the magnetic pole by Edgewood David and Douglas Mawson, the accent of Mt. Erebus, several scientific sledging trips and a polar plateau trip reaching within 97 miles of the South Pole. Shackleton and three others turned back short of the pole due to doubtful food and fuel supply to safely return to the expedition's base at Cape Royds. In a letter to his wife Emily, Shackleton said "I thought, dear, that you would rather have a live ass than a dead lion." His efforts mapped the route to the South Pole that Scott used in the ill fated 1912 expedition. For his polar achievements, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII.

Winston S. Churchill
My African Journey Winston S. Churchill Toronto: William Briggs, 1909 First Canadian Edition Condition: Very Good minus Here is a rare prize. This first and only Canadian issue of My African Journey is among the scarcest English language first editions of Churchill's book-length works. We have seen only a precious few on the market over many years. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs apparently taken by the author. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains." In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book. By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them. In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton published My African Journey as a book, which was a substantial 10,000 words longer than the serialized articles. Both the Canadian and British first editions are striking, with a vivid red binding and a pictorial front cover bearing a woodcut illustration of Churchill with his bagged white rhinoceros depicted in blue, grey, and black. This Canadian edition is distingui … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beatrix Potter
London: Warne & Co. The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies 1909 1st edition in fine condition. The Tale of The Flopsy Bunnies 1909 first edition in fine condition. 27 colour full-page illustrations. First edition, one of two indistinguishable printings of July and October 1909. The notice-board that appears in the illustration on p. 14 reads "Peter Rabbit & Mother - Florists - Gardens neatly razed. Borders devastated by the night or year"; this was replaced from the third impression onwards to avoid difficulty for foreign translators. The trade issue was bound in both brown and green paper-backed boards, without primacy. Linder, p. 428; Quinby 16. Rare in this condition. A sequel to Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny, this tale uses as backdrop the garden at Gwaenynog, Denbigh, home of the Burtons, Potter's uncle & aunt, and fortunately proves neither "soporific" nor "improvident". Beatrix Potter wrote to Harold Warne in autumn 1908 with three new works for potential publication: a story written years before and set in Rye which became The Faithful Dove; a tale based around the village shop in Sawrey which became The Tale of Ginger and Pickles and a third work, a sequel to The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, which became the present work. For the illustrations, which are regarded as amongst her finest, the author drew upon the semi-formal gardens of her aunt and uncle, based in Gwaenynog, Denbigh. Linder, p.428; Quinby 16 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]. [Attributes: First Edition]

Winston S. Churchill
William Briggs, Toronto, 1909. Here is a rare prize. This Canadian edition is distinguished by the publisher "BRIGGS" on the lower spine, in lieu of the British edition's "Hodd … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Nevada]. [Mining]
[Reno?], 1909. Good.. Large sheet map, 50 x 22 inches. Rolled. Two closed tears, partially repaired with tape. Some chipping at edges. Patch of dampstaining at lower right corner. A large and detailed map of mining claims near Seven Troughs Mountain, in what is now Pershing County, Nevada, produced in 1909 by two local mining engineers, Arthur B. Crosley and Herman C. Zulch. Both men were recent graduates of the Colorado School of Mines, who had moved to Nevada to begin their careers as engineers when this map was published. In great detail, the map outlines hundreds of overlapping claims in the area surrounding the mining camps of Vernon, Seven Troughs, Mazuma, and Farrell. Gold was discovered in the area in 1907, and the rush that followed produced a heavily active mining district for just over a decade, before the Seven Troughs post office closed in 1918, and the towns became ghosts by the beginning of the 1920s. A rare map of a relatively short-lived Nevada mining district; we locate no institutional copies.
