Congratulatory address by the assistants' committee of Viennese joiners for Laurenz Widholz. Vienna, 8. I. 1911.

1911. Oblong folio (ca 470 x 344 x 75 mm). 14 heavy double leaves of cardboard, edges gilt, gilt-edged mats with 27 original photographs (albumen prints, mostly ca 185 x 280 mm). Contemporary buff-coloured calf with metal and and coloured enamel applications, covers elaborately gilt; large central ornament on upper cover monogrammed "LW"; gilt fillets and four bosses on lower cover. Moirée silk pastedowns and cardboard endpapers. All edges gilt. Splendid, perfectly preserved gratulatory album, dedicated by his co-workers to the joiner and social-democratic politician Laurenz Widholz (1861-1926) "in commemoration of your twenty years as chairman of assistants and as an activist in free organizing" (as the calligraphic title in black, red, and gold reads). The photographs, captioned in letterpress, show Widholz, the Vienna committee of joiner assistants, and agitation committees of the various districts of Vienna, of the machine workers, builders, crate carpenters, and the joiners' choir. - Laurenz Widholz, a pioneer of workers' insurance, chairman of the Viennese joiners' health fund and of the Association of Lower Austrian Co-operative Health Insurers, was the first social democrat to win a direct seat in the parliament (for Vienna's Simmering district in 1907); he would remain a member until his death. In 1919/20 he served as deputy governor of Lower Austria. His name is commemorated in Simmering by the Widholzgasse street and by the residential building "Widholzhof", which was heavily damaged during the Austrian Civil War of February 1934. The present congratulatory address thus represents an interesting document of the history of Austrian socialism. - A fine example of the remarkable workmanship practised by the Viennese bookbinding concern F. W. Papke, founded in 1841 and located at the Mozartplatz in the 4th district.

1 vol. in-12 reliure demi-basane bordeaux, coll.

In Antiqua-Schrift.

1911. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1911. Original light brown paper boards with arched pictorial onlay. First Edition of these adventures of Timmy Tiptoes (and his wife Goody), grey squirrels trying to get nuts collected and stored up for the oncoming winter. Timmy is wrongly accused of stealing other squirrels' nuts and is thrown through a tree-hole into his and Goody's nut storehouse -- where he gets sidetracked and eats so many of the nuts that he becomes too fat to get out. The presence of chipmunks and a bear in this tale have led to speculation that the author had American children in mind when she wrote and illustrated this book.~Customers could buy TIMMY TIPTOES in either light brown or dark green paper boards, priced at 1/-, or in decorated cloth, at 1/6. This copy is in light brown boards, and is in very good-plus condition (very slight wear at the spine ends); the half-title bears a "Nov. 1911" mother-to-son gift inscription. Linder pp 208-209 and p. 429; Quinby 20.

        Photograph album.

Shanghai, early 20th century. - Oblong folio (362 x 274 mm). Contemporary block-bound silk album of 111 photographs. Various sizes; largest 212 x 155 mm. A photograph album comprising 111 personal photographs of Shanghai, including several images of battleships, various English-language shop signs for local businesses (such as "Hsing Loong Carpenter Mason and Painter"), and 12 photographs showing the burial procession of the mother of Shanghai business man Pau Ching Po. Also, there are several photographs of the 1911 Xinhai Revolution in Shanghai: in November 1911, Shanghai citizens organised a rebellion and captured the city, establishing the Shanghai military on 8 November that same year. The photographs offered here depict the uprising in the streets as well as scenes of destroyed homes and weapons used when taking the city. The revolution resulted in the overthrow of the last imperial monarchy in China and the establishment of the Republic of China in 1912. - Also includes images of the German Theatre at the Lyceum, founded in 1930 as an amateur dramatics society, a photograph of the Prince Adalbert of Prussia (1884-1948) at the Club Concordia in 1904 laying the foundation stone to the new German Club in Shanghai, and three photographs of the wedding of Wilhelm Knappe (1855-1910), the German Consul General in Shanghai from 1899 to 1906. - Very well preserved. Provenance: From the collection of Johannes Gottfried William Schröder (1870-1942). Born in India, the brother of the German poet Rudolf Alexander Schröder grew up in Bremen, trained as a merchant and visited India, China, Japan, and America. He established his own business in Shanghai in 1906. His intimate knowledge of East Asia led him to embrace the philosophy of anthroposophy.

Five Issues of The Coconino Sun 1911

Flagstaff, Arizona: Coconino Sun. 1911. Newspaper. Five issues of the Coconino Sun documenting the Kolb Brothers' journey down the Green and Colorado Rivers from 1911 to 1912. The five issues include: May 26, 1911, Volume XXVIII, Number 26; September 8, 1911, Volume XXVIII, Number 41; October 20, 1911, Volume XXVII, Number 47; November 17, 1911, Volume XXVIII, Number 51; November 24, 1911, Volume XXVIII, Number 52. The set does not include the last issue referring to the Kolb brothers' journey, dated to January 26, 1912. Issues have between 8pp to 12pp, many advertisements and a full page of illustrated cattle brands (around 58 brands). Included on the brand page of each issue is the brand illustration on the animal, written description of the brand, and range area of the herd, along with a horse brand chart. Prominent owner names include Babbitt, Hart, and Verkamp. Issues measure between 13" x 20" to 15" x 21 ½". In good condition. All issues are fragile with toning and tape repairs; chipped edges and some margin loss; all leaves are disbound, likely extracted from a book; "Territorial Lib 1106" rubber stamp on upper left corner of each issue. In the May 26, 1911 issue, editor Fred S. Breen published a short article on the Kolb brothers' intentions of taking a trip from the headwaters of the Green River to Needles. The article was titled "Will Attempt Perilous Trip" which led to a regular correspondence between the Coconino Sun and the Kolb Brothers. In the September 8, 1911 issue the brothers mention that they saw the notice in Breen's newspaper concerning their "contemplated trip for still and motion pictures through the Green and Colorado Rivers." They go on to say they have all their supplies and are ready to go but that "the town people here look on us as a physician might a hopeless case and then relate wierd [sic] stories of others who attempted the voyage and never heard from again." In the October 20, 1911 issue the article was titled "Making Perilous Jorney [sic]- Kolb Brothers Write Last from Jensen, Utah on Way Down Colorado," the writer of these articles continuing with the theme of the "perilous journey." And so it was, for in this issue the brothers disclose that "our third party would weep like a child when we got into tight places. We sent him home 155 miles overland to rail. We two will continue the trip alone." The next issue, November 17, 1911, mentions their experience through Cataract Canyon, their discovery of a man stranded but who refused their help, and in the end "their boats and camera's came through Cataract Canyon successfully." The last issue included here has quite interesting content, including an update that the Kolb Brothers reached the Grand Canyon "tired and wet, but happy," an article concerning the Prohibitionists on the State Ticket, another about a "Water Wizzard [sic] Well Worker," and a rather ridiculous article about a group of Oatman, Arizona bachelors proposing marriage en masse to 250 widows of Santa Monica, the article titled "These Bachelors Want Wives." Ellsworth and Emory Kolb completed their journey in January 1912, emerging from the Grand Canyon with photographs and films that they would show for the next sixty years. A rare record of the Kolb brothers' daring journey. No copies found in commerce as of January 2018. .

Acquaintances, Old and New, Among Reformers

[Milwaukee]: [S.E. Tate Printing Company], 1911. First edition. Original gray-blue publisher's cloth binding, with title and author embossed in gilt on front cover. Gentle bumps to corners; mild shelf wear to crown and foot of spine. Text block tight and unmarked, with the exception of pencil underlining on pages 20 and 29. Inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author: "Mrs. Adelaide Johnson with the love and admiration of Olympia Brown, 941 Seake Ave Racine Wis. Xmas 1913." This rare book last appeared at auction 37 years ago and sold unsigned, making this Near Fine association copy connecting two important leaders of the women's movement an exceptional piece. In this book, Brown documents a lifetime of intersectional activism that began with the influence of her mother, carried her through a college degree at Antioch College, and resulted in her leadership in both the American Equal Rights Association and the women's suffrage movement. With a firm belief that the fight for women's suffrage opened the door to a wider range of racial, economic, and social reform, Brown campaigned alongside such luminaries as Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, and Alice Paul, Brown; and she dedicated her book "To the Woman Suffrage cause, which has inspired the noblest reformers of the last half-century." Adelaide Johnson, to whom Brown presents her book, was no less influential. An exhibitor at the groundbreaking 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, she promoted women's rights by presenting busts of Susan B. Anthony and Lucretia Mott. Almost two decades later, in the year after the 19th Amendment's passage, Johnson unveiled a monument that still remains in Washington, DC's Capitol rotunda: Portrait Monument to Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony. An exceptionally Fine book with an important and unique feminist association.
