A collection of 82 wooden boards carved on both sides with 820 "labels", five to each side, for herbal remedies used by a dispensing pharmacologist.

Provincial southern China, 19th century. - 12,5 x 35 cm. Some occasional light worming, some slight damage affecting the text of 3 boards. Contained in a Chinese leather travelling trunk. Using imperial measures - metric was not used until after the Revolution of 1911 - these receipts are headed with either the title Chung the Celestial at Chuan-Tuan, or Military General the Protector of the People at Chu-Ling-Shan. There are 'labels' for men, women and children, giving the ingredients and name of the remedy pills, potions or powders to "restore youth" and similar purposes. Chinese medicine is of great antiquity and devoid of any outside influence. Legend has it that the Yellow Emperor, Huang Ti, wrote the first treatise on Chinese medicine in 300 BC. In its present form, the Nei Ching, on which most Chinese medical literature is founded, it is thought to date from the third century AD. The Nei Ching holds that "the blood current flows continously in a circle and never stops", anticipating Harvey by centuries. The Chinese materia medica has always been extensive and consists of vegetable, animal, including human, and mineral remedies. There were famous herbals from ancient times, but these ca. 1000 were collected by Li Shih-Chen in the Pen-ts'ao Kang-mu or Great Pharmacopoeia of the 16th Century. It was revised and reprinted many times in 52 volumes and is still authorative. The use of drugs is to restore the harmony of the Ying and Yang, related to the five organs, five planets, and five colours. Western influences did not occur until the 19th century, but today, with the revival of Taoist temples for healing which began to be tolerated again in the 1970s, and the profusion Chinese chemists, acupuncturists and hydrotherapists in the west, the Chinese can be said to have redressed the balance. The troubled history of the 20th century in China has made the survival of such ephemeral documents, and in such quantity, quite remarkable. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Notably, this edition contains the final chapter "When Wendy Grew Up," which tells of Wendy's return to Neverland as an adult with a child of her own. Today, this story is generally referred to by the shortened title Peter Pan.. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

         Multi-Epicycloidal and other Geometric Curves

First edition. Presentation copy. Tall 8vo. (250x160mm) pp. [xiv], [2] blank, photographic print of the author and 77 coloured plates. First prelim slightly foxed otherwise fine. All edges gilt. Green morocco-grain cloth, lettering and curve design in gilt to upper board, gilt lettering to spine, floral pattern endpapers; spine slightly rubbed and small patch of soiling to upper board. Author's presentation inscription to opening page, with original mechanical drawing in ink, dated 1911. A fine copy.Presentation copy of this beautiful anthology of mechanical drawings; artwork "of astounding complexity combined with mathematical symmetry". The author not only inscribed the initial blank but decorated it with an original multo-epicycloidal ink-drawing. This form of mechanical drawing, using a series of inter-connected wheels with variously offset centres, had a considerable vogue at the end of the nineteenth century. Although several such works were published, including T.S. Bazley's Index to the Geometric Chuck (London 1875), Alabone's is the most beautiful presented. It was evidently a popular success since the large number of "letters and personal visits" he received compelled him to produce a second edition two years later (Polycylo-epicycloidal and other Geometric Curves, 1912).

Original Pen & Ink Illustrations, designed by Arthur Hughes to illustrate Greville MacDonald's Trystie's Quest.

[c.1911] 27 pen & ink drawings (plus four unused additional drawings), approx. 13 x 19cm, on artists' boards approx. 26 x 35cm. With references & instructions for the engraver written in pencil. Drawings initialled with the artist's 'AH' monogram. All are in excellent condition; one or two show signs in the margins of having been mounted at some point. Loose in a green cloth portfolio.A magnificent suite of original illustrations, designed by the artist Arthur Hughes to illustrate the first edition of Greville MacDonald's novel Trystie's Quest; or, Kit, King of the Pigwidgeons: a fairy story, first published in 1912. Sixteen of the designs are for full-page engravings, including the frontispiece, and eleven are slightly smaller, to be set into the text. Each image is numbered, and where relevant given a page reference, presumably by the artist. Comparison with the printed volume shows all illustrations are present with the exception of the titlepage vignette. In addition to the published illustrations, there are four further pen & ink drawings, designed for the work, but in the end not used. Two are full-page illustrations, and two vignettes, including one extremely grotesque design depicting seven unprepossessing imps hanging from a gibbet. Born in London, Arthur Hughes, 1832-1915, was an illustrator and painter often associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He discovered the movement when reading The Gem in 1850, and went on to become the most talented of all the young pre-Raphaelite followers. He produced stunning oil paintings and was an exceptional book illustrator, working for Tennyson (including for Enoch Arden), and Thomas Hughes' Tom Brown's School Days. He was great friends with Greville's better-known father George MacDonald, and illustrated a number of his works, including At the Back of the North Wind. She was a patroness of artists and an art donor to Texas A & M University.Bernhardt Wall was born in Buffalo, New York on Dec. 30, 1872. He studied at the Buffalo Art Student's League then moved on to study in New York under Henry Reuterdahl and also apprenticed under William Auerbach-Levy. Wall began a career as a lithographic illustrator in 1889 working primarily as a commercial artist in New York and Buffalo. He soon became known as the "Postcard King" and designed over 5,000 comic cards. The year 1915 marked a defining point in Wall's artistic career. Wall visited Colorado, Nevada and California making etchings of Indians, cowboys and major cities which were later published in a portfolio entitled, "Under Western Skies." These proved to be very successful and the artist shortly thereafter moved to California permanently. Wall continued to produce many fine etchings of the American West and by 1930 had also become a much respected historian of the region.Bernhardt Wall was unique in that he not only drew the etchings for his books, but he also printed and bound them.          Laws of Wages. An Essay in Statistical Economics.

New York: Macmillan, 1911. - First Edition. viii, 2 leaves, 196 pp, 2 leaves; ads. Original cloth. Spine lettering rubbed, else Very Good. The American Moore, who was professor at Columbia University, is likely better known for his Synthetic Economics (1929) ('His magnum opus, Synthetic Economics, was a herculean attempt to estimate Walras's general equilibrium system,' History of Economic Thought Web site), and it as well as his other three books all sold far better in his lifetime than Laws of Wages (George J. Stigler, 'Henry L. Moore and Statistical Economics,' Econometrica, Vol. XXX, Jan., 1962, reprinted in Essays in the History of Economics, pp. 343-73; p. 369). But Stigler and another esteemed historian, Mark Blaug, have attempted to rehabilitate the book's reputation. 'The public announcement of Moore's program was made in the Laws of Wages (1911). The stage had been set, he argued, for a statistical complement of pure economics by three main developments. . The exact nature of this new statistical economics was described by illustration rather than by an explicit methodological program. It consisted of three different types of study: 1. The testing of abstract theories. 2. The estimation of the quantitative magnitudes of parameters of theoretical relationships. 3. The discovery of empirical laws which provide the basis for an enlarged economic theory. The first and third types were illustrated in Laws of Wages: the second type was to come three years later. . . . Moore's standard of craftsmanship is high: the basic data are fully reported and the work was carefully done. . . . The reviews were almost universally appreciative. Taussig had many detailed (and sensible) objections but praised the work, and so too did Schumpeter. Edgeworth was generally appreciative: '. . . this is the first time, we believe, that the higher statistics, which are founded on the Calculus of Probabilities, have been used on a large scale as a buttress of economic theory' ' (Stigler, 348-52). 'He was dogged by poor health all his life, much of which seems to have been psychosomatic in origin. His last book, Synthetic Economics (1929), a bold attempt to estimate a complete Walrasian system of general equilibrium, shows signs of frustration at his waning powers. His first book, however, Laws of Wages (1911), was a pioneering attempt to test the marginal productivity of wages' (Blaug, Great Economists Before Keynes, p. 172). Moore's 'findings (e.g. that wage rates for similar occupations in an industry vary directly with the size of the plant) have repeatedly been confirmed by later investigators. The book also contained a first attempt to measure the influence of unions on the outcome of strikes' (Blaug, p. 172). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
