NOLAN, Martin
Ontario, Canada, 1911. Quarto measuring 11.5"x 10". More modern green binder. Contains 205 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 3"x 2" and 9.5" x 8". One photograph has small chips along the edges, all other photographs are fine. A collection of photographs placed in a contemporary binder put together by Martin Nolan during his time in Canada at the start of the Porcupine gold rush in the early 1900s. The album features photographs of the mining tracks and log cabins slowly being built up around the mountains of Northern Ontario during the rush. The Porcupine Gold Rush began in 1909 and was in full swing by 1911. Small companies were unable to keep up with the rapid capitalization of larger mines in the area and while there are several pictures of people sifting through rivers looking through gold, most single-man operations could not effectively mine the area. Nolan owned this particular mine and can be seen sifting through rivers and traveling along the mountain in search of gold with friends and family. There are several pages filled with shots of the landscape, showing the mountains, lakes, and waterfalls as well as shots during the winter. The mine was built around the lakes, sometimes requiring dams. In one shot, there are large water pipes redirecting the flow to a separate lake away from the track. The album later shows Nolan traveling on a ship. There are both shots of the boat while Nolan was riding it and of the boats entire structure. These pictures as well as some later use double exposure effects. Nolan travels with his f … [Click Below for Full Description]

BARRIE, J.M.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1911. 1911 1st ed Peter Pan and Wendy JM Barrie Children's Literature Illustrated"Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough. You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it." ― J.M. Barrie, Peter PanA fine first American printing of "Peter and Wendy" by J.M. Barrie. The story of Peter Pan is one of most famous and beloved children's stories of all time and has inspired some of the most enjoyed films, music, and plays. The story, however, is not without its own share of controversy - children interacting with Native Americans, mermaids, and pirates - unfortunate undertones of racism.Bound in original green cloth with "Published October, 1911" with the Scribner' seal on the copyright page - a true American first printing. Comstock, Anna Botsford
Ithaca: Comstock Publishing Company, 1911. Hard Cover. Octavo. xviii, 938 pp. First Edition, signed and inscribed by Comstock on the title page. As issued, in green checkered cloth with title and vignette stamped in gold, spine titling faded. Light wear to the extremities, spine ends and corners show just a bit of fraying. Front hinge and the first few signatures are a bit loose, but holding well. All in all, a very presentable copy. A Cornell University graduate and respected science illustrator, Comstock was appointed to the New York State Committee for the Promotion of Agriculture in 1895 as part of an attempt to address fears over the future of agriculture in New York during the depression in the 1890s when young people were migrating out of rural communities into the cities. She pioneered an experimental course of study to educate students in public schools on their environment, notably bringing the classroom to nature rather than nature to the classroom. Eventually approved for statewide use, Cornell University was the extension service for this program and in 1897 Comstock joined their faculty. While simple on its face, her approach was impactful: educate children about their environment and they will appreciate and invest in it. The leaflets she wrote for the program are the foundation of this present volume. It is difficult to overstate Comstock's contribution to environmental education which certainly extends far beyond this book; nevertheless, Handbook of Nature-Study is an encapsulation of her legacy. The book has gone into dozens of editions and remains in pri … [Click Below for Full Description]

RANSOME, Cecily.)
[Limpsfield:] [N.A.], 1911. Quarto, [pp. 16]. Original paper wrappers, titles and illustration to front cover in pen and ink and watercolour, original green cotton ties. Manuscript notebook, faintly ruled in pencil, closely written in black ink by a single hand, neat and highly legible. Faint browning to spine, covers and endpapers a little soiled, a very good, bright copy. With 4 pen and ink and watercolour illustrations in the text, illustrated initials, and rose line fillers, by Cecily Ransome. A charming illustrated manuscript with the illustrations by Arthur Ransome's sister, Cecily Ransome (1885-1956), an amateur artist who trained at the Académie Colarossi in Paris. It is believed that Cecily also illustrated the title page for Arthur's 1911 work The Hoofmarks of the Faun. She appears to have been commissioned by a family friend from Limpsfield, in Surrey, where the Ransome family had long had family, to illustrate this birthday gift book. The book describes a young girl named Dorothy's birthday party, and gives details both on Dorothy's presents and guests, and on her family's home life. This provides a fascinating insight into the workings of a pre-war family home and mentions the various members of staff the family of four employed, including; the house maids, Sarah, Grace, Laura and Louisa, the chef, Gatenby, the butler, Massingham, the groom, James, and his family, and the gardener, George, and his wife. This polished work is in a style classic to the time, the rose embellishments reminiscent of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Hammond, A12; Arthur Ransome's Long-lost … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Nation was an Irish nationalist weekly newspaper, published in the 19th century. The Nation was printed first at 12 Trinity Street, Dublin from 15 October 1842 until 6 January 1844. The paper was afterwards published at 4 D'Olier Street from 13 July 1844, to 28 July 1848, when the issue for the following day was seized and the paper suppressed. It was published again in Middle Abbey Street on its revival in September 1849. The founders of The Nation were three young men - two Catholics and one Protestant - who, according to the historian of the newspaper T. F. O'Sullivan, were all „free from the slightest taint of bigotry, and were anxious to unite all creeds and classes for the country's welfare.". They were Charles Gavan Duffy, its first editor; Thomas Davis, and John Blake Dillon. All three were members of Daniel O'Connell's Repeal Association, which sought repeal of the disastrous 1800 Act of Union between Ireland and Britain; this association would later be known as Young Ireland. The name suggested by Duffy for the paper was The National, but Davis disagreed, suggesting „that the use of an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eine seltene Sammlung !! Hans Vaihinger (* 25. [Click Below for Full Description]

Comstock, Anna Botsford
Comstock Publishing Company, Ithaca, 1911. Octavo. xviii, 938 pp. The book has gone into dozens of editions and remains in print today. Fir … [Click Below for Full Description]

J.M. Barrie
1911 vintage hardcover novel in nice condition. A ragged dust jacket has encased this book, probably forever, so the gold embossing just pops out. It looks like the gold was just applied to the cover and spine recently, something that is rarely seen with this book. The only two real flaws I see is a thin strip on the lower front edge, where it looks like the jacket didn't fully cover the lower edge and there is a slight ding to the outer edge, nothing horrendous, but there. This is the first US 1st printing with the required "Published October, 1911" statement on the copyright page, indicating the first printing. I've pieced the original dust jacket together and encased it in an archival mylar cover, it's not a complete dust jacket (jackets for this book are scarce) but it does protect the book. The future President wrote: “Here it is April and I've failed you in your request for an April article on Communism aimed at Fraternities. Let me explain that your letter caught up with me in the middle of a speaking tour. Those joints are one night stands with no time for even normal physical functions let alone articles. I returned to an immediate production schedule on the show. Now here I am at my desk and your letter is before me – also the realization that I’ve run out of time. TAYLOR, Frederick Winslow.
New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1911. Octavo. Original dark green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front board with single fillet border in blind. Ownership signature of R. L. Rowley dated 27 March 1911 to front pastedown, his armorial bookplate to front free endpaper; subsequently from the library of esteemed collector Victor Niederhoffer. A near-fine copy, spine slanted and light rubbing to extremities, some offset from bookplate residue to front pastedown, contents evenly toned. First edition, the scarce privately printed issue, of the first and most influential book on business and industrial management. "This special edition [was] printed in February 1911 for confidential circulation among the members of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers with the compliments of the author" (title page statement). The first trade edition followed the same year. In the Society's journal for 1911 (Vol. 83 So. 1) a "R. L. Rowley" is listed as having been elected a new member on 1 June 1911, and is likely the first or at least one of the earliest owners of this copy. "F. W. Title page tipped in as called for, and unlisted plate between pages 270-271. Publisher's adverts to rear. A Fine copy with bookplate to front pastedown and contemporary gift inscription to the front endpaper, else internally clean and unmarked. Chronicling London's South Pacific voyage alongside his wife Charmian, Cruise of the Snark is an excited illustrated maritime narrative. The boat, which London built himself and named after the Lewis Carroll poem, departed San Francisco Bay in 1907, carrying the Londons to Hawaii, through the Marquesas Islands, into Tahiti and the islands of Raiatea, through Bora Bora, Fiji, Samoa, and the Solomon Islands before concluding in Australia. In addition to describing the sea voyage and various ports of entry, London notably observed those who lived on the islands with poetic admiration: "Like the founders of Venice, thse salt-water men were originally refugees from the mainland. Too week to hold their own in the bush, survivors of village massacres, they fled to the sand banks of the lagoon. These they build up into islands. They were compelled to seek their provender from the sea." Fine.

Shelley, Percy Bysshe; Robinson, Charles (Illustrator); Gosse, Edmund (Introduction)
Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Co., [1911]. Robinson, Charles. First Trade Edition. First U.S. trade edition as illustrated by Robinson, quarto size, [128] pp., in original dust jacket. Percy Bysshe Shelley's (1792-1822) "The Sensitive Plant" is a delicate fairy fable about ephemeral beauty and the aspiration to follow dreams when the reality of the senses fails. It was first published in 1820 in "Prometheus Unbound" along with some of Shelley's best known work; here it is re-imagined with the hazy watercolour illustrations of prolific children's book illustrator Charles Robinson (1870-1937). Though paired with Shelley long after his death, they are well matched, "his black and white illustration reflects the influence of Beardsley and Walter Crane, and his watercolour illustrations have delicacy and sensitivity, greatly helped by the four colour process early in the century as the alternative to lithography. By incorporating lettering into the page design, and in his planning of the book as a whole, he developed the Arts and Crafts tradition of the book as a work of art" (Peppin, Brigid & Micklethwait, Lucy, "Book Illustrators of the Twentieth Century," p. 265). This edition of "The Sensitive Plant" certainly exemplifies that ideal of the artist's hand in all aspects of a book's design, with a beautifully composed typeface, decorative borders, pale pink page numbers, and stunning full-color mounted plates. With an introduction by Edmund William Gosse (1849-1928), a poet and author who was influential in the literary world of his day, encouraging the careers of Yeats and Ja … [Click Below for Full Description]

Basile, Giambattista; Strange, E[dward] F[airbrother], Editor; Goble, Warwick (Illustrator)
London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1911. Goble, Warwick. Limited Edition. One of 150 copies, the Editino de Luxe, quarto size, 304 pp. The text of this book is based on John Edward Taylor's translation from 1847. Giambattista Basile (1566-1632) was an Italian poet, courtier, and fairy tale collector. The earliest form of this work was published in 1634 and 1636 under a pseudonym, by his sister, in two volumes. It languished and then received attention when praised by the Brothers Grimm as the first "national" collection of fairy tales, and contains the earliest known versions of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Rapunzel. His collection of stories became known as the Pentamerone because it was loosely modeled after the Decamerone of Boccaccio. Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was an illustrator specializing in Japanese and Indian themes; his interest in Japanese style is evident in his work, and had an affect on later illustrators including Virginia Frances Sterrett. Among many other works, in his early career he was the first to illustrate H.G. Wells's The War of the Worlds. The editor, Edward Fairbrother Strange, worked at the Victoria and Albert Museum and was the author of numerous works on art and illustration, as well as contributing articles to the famous 11th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. ___DESCRIPTION: Deluxe binding of white vellum with gilt decoration on front, gilt lettering on front and spine, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, yellow ties, plain endpapers, title page in red and black.
