Chilton, Frank B. (compiler)
Houston: F. B. Chilton, 1911. Hard Cover. Good+ binding. Quarto. 372, [2] pp., plates. First Edition, inscribed by Chilton. Original, unrepaired bindings are seldom seen; this copy is in the original boards with titling in gold on the front cover, but has been rebacked and recornered in maroon leatherette with original backstrip preserved and laid in, all housed in cloth slipcase. Binding is only lightly shelfworn and contents are tight, except for 2 leaves and one plate that are a trifle pulled and loose, but still attached; early and minor tideline along the very bottom margin throughout much of the book, often very faint; contemporary notes on the first blank pointing the reader to a few marked pages in the text with annotations or marginal bracketing in blue pencil. All plates are present as called for, including a frontispiece portrait of General Hood and fifteen other portraits and illustrations (one depicting the battle flags of the Confederacy reproduced in color on heavy gray paper with debossed border and an accompanying ode by John Dimitry). An uncommon book by all accounts, but this copy is all the more uncommon bearing a bold and remarkably warm presentation inscription to Henry B. [Brashear] Bringhurst, First National Bank, Houston, TX and dated October 25, 1921. Chilton writes, “In memory of your departed father who was my close friend for over half a century and because you possess so many of his marked and noble characteristics the author is proud to claim you too as his friend.” Like Chilton, Both Henry B. and his father George R. Bringhurst were promin … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York, 1911. Oblong quarto. Measuring 12" x 10". Black textured cloth over paper boards. Contains 87 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 5" x 7", without captions. Album is very good with some edgewear with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by an unnamed woman while she was attending Briarcliff College in Briarcliff Manor, New York from 1910 to 1911. Briarcliff College was originally founded as Mrs. Dow's School for Girls in 1903 at Briarcliff Lodge and by 1933 had become a junior college. The album shows the year of 1910 to 1911 with photos of the women participating in a cooking class, various theatrical performances, and posing around the campus. The theater was a huge part of the women's time at the college and featured many historic reenactments using Native American scenes and Middle Eastern costumes. One photo shows the women in various costumes, some of them dressed as men, clowns, and one in black face, with a hand drawn poster that says "Roasted Puppies" in the background. The women are also shown enjoying the seasons from ice skating in winter to picnicking in spring. One photo displays the women as a group playing mandolins and guitars. Another photo shows a small group of girls sitting in a field with rifles in the foreground. A nice collection of photographs representing a women's college in 1910 displaying the creativity and quirkiness of its students. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

(DELHI DURBAR.)
Calcutta: Superintendent Government Printing India, , 1911. Final effulgence of the Raj Octavo. Original red morocco-grain cloth pocket-book binding, title and Royal Arms gilt to front cover. 2 folding maps in front pocket (2-inch colour map of Durbar Area, "type plan" of military camps), 4 (of 5) appendices in rear pocket, sewn as issued, 2 folding diagrams in the text. Binding just a little rubbed, one corner lightly bumped, slight discolouration to reverse of flap and inside rear pocket. A very good copy. First and sole edition, produced in small numbers for the use of officials and inevitably scarce; an important primary source for the Delhi Durbar, "the most spectacular ceremony in the history of the British empire" (ODNB), held on 12 December 1911 to mark the coronation of George V and Mary of Teck as Emperor and Empress of India. These military arrangements were overseen by the C-in-C India and the king's aide-de-camp, General Sir Garrett O'Moore Creagh, awarded the VC for his defence of Kam Dakka during the Second Afghan War; and Major-General G. C. Kitson, Quartermaster-General in India. Unsurprisingly, the detail given here is exhaustive, from massed bands and tentage to the storage of full dress kits and "flags – flying of", including fire precautions, water supply, lighting, telegraphs and telephones, railway and ecclesiastical arrangements. This copy without Appendix E, which should be housed in the rear pocket ("Temporary relief movements necessitated by the absence of units at the Durbar"). However, it would appear that issuance of the appendices was no … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cordier, A. H. M.D.
Kansas City Missouri , 1911. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Original pictorial cloth, 317 pages, frontis, photos, hinges cracked, cover in much better shape than normally found, 2 small book descriptions attached to front flyleaf. Very difficult to obtain in a nice condition. Numerous big game hunting accounts, elk, moose, bear, sheep, buffalo, etc. Has a chapter on The grand Duke Alexis buffalo hunt with Custer, Cody, Sheridan and others. This is the account of Chalkley M. Beeson who was a scout for the Colorado portion of the hunt. Beeson was playing at a dance in Denver and was talking about seeing lots of buffalo when Custer heard him and an expedition was planned. Beeson having loaned his horse to the hunters stayed with the wagons and Sheridan. They walked to the top of a hill and saw three wounded buffalo headed their way when a crowd of hunters topped the hill from the opposite side and started firing in Sheridan and Beesons' direction. Sheridan hit the ground and Beeson ran to the wagons. "He (Sheridan) was the maddest man I ever saw. There was only one man in the army who could equal him when it came to a certain kind of expletives and that was Custer himself.Alexis got a cussing from Sheridan that day I bet he'll never forget. He didn't spare anybody in the bunch, not even Custer and the Grand Duke and he included all their kin folks direct and collateral. It was a liberal education in profanity to hear him." Beeson goes on to give a very good account of the hunting trip. O'Keefe 578..

HUGHES, Arthur.
[c.1911]. 27 pen & ink drawings (plus four unused additional drawings), approx. 13 x 19cm, on artists' boards approx. 26 x 35cm. With references & instructions for the engraver written in pencil. Drawings initialled with the artist's 'AH' monogram. All are in excellent condition; one or two show signs in the margins of having been mounted at some point. In a green cloth portfolio album. A magnificent suite of original illustrations, designed by the artist Arthur Hughes to illustrate the first edition of Greville MacDonald's novel Trystie's Quest; or, Kit, King of the Pigwidgeons: a fairy story, first published in 1912. Sixteen of the designs are for full-page engravings, including the frontispiece, and eleven are slightly smaller, to be set into the text. Each image is numbered, and where relevant given a page reference, presumably by the artist. Comparison with the printed volume shows all illustrations are present with the exception of the titlepage vignette. In addition to the published illustrations, there are four further pen & ink drawings, designed for the work, but in the end not used. Two are full-page illustrations, and two vignettes, including one extremely grotesque design depicting seven unprepossessing imps hanging from a gibbet. Born in London, Arthur Hughes, 1832-1915, was an illustrator and painter often associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He discovered the movement when reading The Gem in 1850, and went on to become the most talented of all the young pre-Raphaelite followers. He produced stunning oil paintings and was an exceptional book illust … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brod, Max, Schriftsteller (1884-1968)
Prag, Schalengasse 4, 12. VIII. (1911, Poststempel), Gr.-8° (21,5 x 14 cm). 2 Seiten. Doppelblatt. Mit eigenh. Umschlag. Au … [Click Below for Full Description]

According to Eicher, corrections were made to the diary by Welles after the war and by his son before publication, but were done to clarify, not change the historical narrative. A "corrected" version was released in 1960 by Howard K. Beale. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Clarence Mulford
AC MCCLURG, 1911. Condition: Very Good. Nice VG+ book in a new & beautiful Facsimile dust jacket of the later A.L. Burt dust jacket; the original dust jacket is within. BAR-20 DAYS - 1st EDITION BY CLARENCE E. MULFORD, A.C. McCLURG, 1911, in a new & beautiful Facsimile dust jacket of the A.L. Burt dust jacket. Bar-20 Days flavorful compilation of Mulford stories centering on the notorious Bar-20 Ranch in the late 1800s. Each story may stand alone, but set in an ingenious sequence that makes for enjoyable reading and provides the background to Hopalong Cassidy. Jim Meeker came down from Montana to run Texas cattle--only to find that Hoppy's Bar-20 ran the water. So when a trio of snake-mean rustlers started themselves a cattle war, the powder was primed, the guns cocked, and Hoppy was smack in the middle. Friend against friend, brother against brother, gun against blazing gun. Cassidy could fan a gun like Billy the Kid. Six rounds in three seconds was his slowest time. No one in Texas could beat him...until he met Slim Travennes, head of the Sandy Creek Vigilante Committee. Slim was snake-fast. None could go up against him and live. Hoppy could stand or die. He had no other choice. Hopalong Cassidy is a fictional cowboy hero created in 1904 by the author Clarence E. Mulford, who wrote a series of popular short stories and twenty-eight novels based on the character. In his early writings, Mulford portrayed the character as rude, dangerous, and rough-talking. Beginning in 1935, the character--as played by movie actor William Boyd in films adapted from Mulford's books--was trans … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Proprietors of The Woman's Journal, Boston, 1911. Stock Certificate No. 129 for two shares issued by The Proprietors of The Woman's Journal Corporation. Measuring 10.5" x 5.25" (including stub). Attached at the margin with a stub to a transfer document. Garrison, and Catherine Wilde. The attached transfer awards the two shares to The Proprietors from the Estate of H.M. Pitman. Near fine. *The Woman's Journal* was the first regular woman's rights periodical in America. Its publication was the crowning achievement of Lucy Stone's long and distinguished feminist career. According to *HAWH*: "Stone's most active and lasting contribution to the women's movement is *The Woman's Journal*, which she founded in 1870 and edited until her death in 1893. This extraordinary archive of women's history provided a weekly chronicle of woman's progress - political, vocational, economic, cultural, and legal-both in the United States and abroad.[for] over sixty one years." As the political organ of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, *The Woman's Journal* printed meeting and convention addresses and notes, reported on national and international news, published columns and editorials on the suffrage struggle, as well as poems, stories, and book reviews. Wordsworth, William
Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1911. First Edition, First Printing [Thus]. A Fine copy of the Grasmere Edition of William Wordsworth's Complete Poetical Works in ten volumes, each with a black spine label with the lettering thereon in gilt and with each Volume having its closed page block's top edge being in gilt as well. This appears to be an unread set with many of the page pairs unopened at their leading edge. The set remains in its rare original shipping box which, of course, lacks the front board which presumably was removed and discarded when opened by a prior owner. The dust jackets have yapped edges at the top and bottom and thus are larger than required for the books with the excess material being designed to be folded over each closed page block's top and bottom edges, resulting in these page block edges remaining remarkably bright and clean. While showing slight wear, eight of the ten jackets remain in Fine condition. Volume I's spine panel head shows some loss and Volume X's jacket shows a tear running horizontally across the spine panel and continuing across the front panel at an upward angle. (This tear, along with some additional rather small ones to this Volume's dust jacket, have been repaired with translucent archival tape applied to the jacket's verso, and the portion of the front panel lying above the front panel repair has some wrinkling due to the earlier insertion of the volume into the box when torn.) The renowned Romantic Poet William Wordsworth, together with his friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge, are credited with launching the Romant … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fitzroy Maclean Signed Note WWII Churchill Ian Fleming James Bond
1911. Please see book description below as well as pictures! Note Signed (very rare) by Sir Fitzroy Maclean on His Estate Stationary (Strachur House) Close Friend of Ian Fleming - presumably used Maclean for his inspiration of James Bond Free Shipping Dust Jacket Protected by a Brodart Cover Please see pictures for more information and detail Sir Fitzroy Hew Royle Maclean, 1st Baronet, KT, CBE (11 March 1911 - 15 June 1996) was a Scottish soldier, writer and politician. He was a Unionist Member of Parliament from 1941 to 1974 and was one of only two men who during the Second World War enlisted in the British Army as a private and rose to the rank of brigadier, the other being future fellow Conservative MP Enoch Powell. Maclean wrote several books, including Eastern Approaches, in which he recounted three extraordinary series of adventures: travelling, often incognito, in Soviet Central Asia; fighting in the Western Desert Campaign, where he specialised in commando raids behind enemy lines; and living rough with Tito and his Yugoslav Partisans. It has been widely speculated that Ian Fleming used Maclean as one of his inspirations for James Bond. When war broke out in 1939 Maclean was prevented from joining the military because of his position as a diplomat. He was 2nd Secretary in the Foreign Office. Therefore, he resigned from the Diplomatic Service "to go into politics". After tendering his resignation he immediately took a taxi to the nearest recruiting office and enlisted as a Private in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. He was soon promoted to lance corporal and was … [Click Below for Full Description]

1911. First edition. 8vo., original black cloth, printed label on spine. Fine red morocco backed folding box, with bookplate of John Schroder. London, Sidgwick & Jackson. With an unsigned autograph presentation inscription from the author to ?J.T. Sheppard Dec 5. 1911? on the front free endpaper, and with three manuscript corrections to the text, the two normal ones (?Libido? to ?Lust?, and ?greasy? to ?queasy?) and a third in the poem 'Menelaus and Helen' where one word is added. John Tresidder Sheppard was Brooke's Classics tutor at King's College Cambridge and later Provost. He was a prominent Apostle and enthusiastically gay. Noel Annan in his ODNB appreciation wrote of him: ?Sheppard was a character. His mane of white hair brought him dignity which he masked with clowning. Shrewd yet naïve, tough yet appearing to be tottering on the verge of senility, tirelessly interested in people, helping them by stealth, histrionic in the highest degree, quick to spot the comic and to mock the pompous, the possessor of a gargantuan ego that was directed almost entirely to good ends, he was one of the most remarkable dons of his day.? With a TLS from Sheppard to the bookseller Percy Muir, dated July 1954, thanking Muir for having pointed out the annotation: ?I am indeed grateful for the trouble you have taken in the matter and for the generous way in which the firm has acted.? Spine label a bit darkened, but a near fine copy with the exception of a most unusual tear on the contents leaf where it appears that a fountain pen has been used to stab then rip at the paper, leaving an ink … [Click Below for Full Description]

NANSEN, Fridtjof.
London: William Heinemann, 1911. 2 volumes, large octavo. Original blue vertical-ribbed cloth, spines lettered in gilt, front boards with concentric blind panels enclosing gilt titles and semi-circular gilt design of low sun over sea and mountains with approaching Viking longship. With the dust jackets. Trivial rubbing to extremities, lower outer corner of vol. 1 rear board slightly bumped, mild spotting to edges, endleaves and prelims, customary strips of browning to free endpapers, small abrasions to rear pastedowns probably from a bookseller's ticket, a few isolated sprays of foxing to the text, these flaws minor: a superb copy in the remarkably fresh dust jackets, with just a hint of rubbing to the heads of the spines, shallow chips to corners, and vol. 1 with a short closed tear to the head of the front joint. Tipped-in coloured frontispieces (with tissue-guards), numerous wood-engraved illustrations and maps in the text; title pages printed in blue & black. First edition in English, published the same year as the Norwegian original, rare in the dust jackets, and a very handsome copy in the superior gilt-stamped variant binding; In Northern Mists is also encountered with the front boards lettered and panelled solely in black. Nansen wrote the book at the request of the Royal Geographical Society: "this book owes its existence to a rash promise made some years ago to my friend [the geographer] Dr. J. Scott Keltie". It is an historical survey of the opening of the Arctic from classical antiquity to Cabot and the Portuguese discoveries in the north-west, and includes an a … [Click Below for Full Description]
