Photo album): Gold Mines, Gold Dredges, and the West. Circa 1910

Salt Lake City and other locations - Oblong octavo. String-tied flexible leather. Lacking front board, thus good, some fading on some of the images internally very good. Contains 170 gelatin silver sepia-toned images. Various sizes, a few have been trimmed to make "vignettes" of individuals, most are some variation of 4.5" x 2.75". A small number have obvious fallen out or been removed. A few images have captions. An album kept by what appears to be a Western family, possibly from Salt Lake City, showing a mix of family images and images from both ranches and gold mining. Several mining dredges are shown, as well as scenes of miners and farmers. A few shots of the Alamo are shown as well, as a few images, probably from California, where men with rifles are shown among the giant redwoods. A modest but pleasing group of images.         Abito originale. Circa 1910

, , . Vestito lungo in velluto stampato in argento, seta e chiuso da bottoni in vetro veneziano, appartenuto a Cesarina Gualino. Circa 1910. . . .

A letter to American teachers of history

Washington, [D.C.]: [press of J.H. Furst Co., Baltimore], 1910. First edition, signed by Henry Adams at the end of the introductory letter; 12mo, pp. vi, 214, [2]; original green cloth, spine a bit sunned and with a small snag in the cloth (not effecting any lettering), otherwise very good. "In 1910 Adams published and scattered widely a little volume which he called A Letter to American Teachers of History. Its style was designedly colloquial and its tone provocative. Assuming the validity of the second law of thermodynamics, that there is a universal tendency to the dissipation of mechanical energy, he pointed out the dilemma of teachers of history if they postulated a progressive evolution in human history towards some state of perfection, or tried to exempt mind from the operation of the law. What did they propose to do about it? Human thought should be considered as a substance passing from one phase to another, through a series of critical points which are determined by attraction, acceleration, and volume. - the equivalents of pressure, temperature, and volume in mechanical physics. In short, the future historian who would interpret the movement called history would have to seek his education in the world of mathematical physics" (Allen Johnson, in DAB). BAL 34: "Many copies, perhaps most, signed by the author at p. vi."

An album of photographs documenting Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova expedition, 1910-1913; [together with] A manuscript plan of the Discovery, and two letters of Scott relating to the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-04.

      1. A rare photographic chronicle of the most celebrated expedition in the history of polar exploration, Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition, officially known as the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913. Album of press photographs by various English and New Zealand agencies, 1910-1913. Small folio (310 x 220 mm), original green cloth boards (rubbed and marked), spine with contrasting red morocco title label lettered in gilt 'Scott Expedition Pictures'; containing [58] silver gelatin press photographs, most large format from 210 x 150 mm up to 290 x 190 mm, laid down recto and verso of the album pages, the majority with a contemporary typed caption label pasted beneath the image; the photographs generally in very good condition, a small number with minor blemishes; pages with scattered light foxing and occasional short edge tears. This important album of press photographs was compiled between 1910 and 1913 by a journalist attached to the London illustrated weekly newspaper The Sphere. It tells the story of the Terra Nova expedition from just prior to its departure to its tragic aftermath, and includes images from its sojourn in Lyttelton, New Zealand; its time in the Antarctic; the Terra Nova's return to Lyttelton; and portraits of the families of Scott and Evans taken after the news of the fate of Scott's polar party had reached England. The photographs document preparations on the Terra Nova prior to departure; the ship's departure; Lyttelton, New Zealand, including inspection of the expedition's ponies and huskies (17); Scott and companions at the foot of Mount Erebus (2);  the Terra Nova in the ice (3); expedition dinner on board the Terra Nova; the return of the Terra Nova to Lyttelton in February 1913 (10); Mrs. Evans and family (5); Mrs. Scott (Kathleen Bruce) and her son Peter, including the expedition leader's wife in her artist's studio (4). Aiming to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole, Scott and four companions reached their objective on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian team under Amundsen had beaten them to the pole by 34 days. Scott and his party perished on the return journey across the ice. Eight months later, the search party from the Terra Nova recovered journals and photographs from the party's tent that famously document the epic journey of Scott, Evans, Wilson, Bowers and Oates. 2. A manuscript diagram of Scott's ship Discovery, built for the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-04.   [Dundee Shipbuilders Company. W.E. Smith, architect; R. Paterson, Managing Director, E. Bate, Inspector. 1900 or 1901]. Longitudinal Section, S.S. "Discovery". Manuscript in ink on tracing paper, 217 x 680 mm; annotations in pencil, possibly in the hand of Robert Falcon Scott; original vertical folds, complete. The Sphere, Vol. VI, No. 80, London, 3 August 1901. featured an article on the "The Great British Antarctic Expedition", which was illustrated with photographic plates and a double page 'Diagrammatic view of the Discovery' that appears to have been based on the present longitudinal section. 3. Two holograph letters by Robert Falcon Scott to a journalist at The Sphere. Robert Falcon Scott. Autograph letter signed, 2 pp. octavo, on embossed letterhead of the 'Discovery Antarctic Expedition 1901', dated 'At sea, August 14th [1901]', addressed to Mr. House (or possibly Horne?), a journalist at The Sphere, thanking him for his good wishes. Scott writes: 'I shall be indeed glad to see your further work in illustrating our venture and as our progress is slow there is no doubt of our receiving letters & papers sent to Cape Town ... believe me, Yours faithfully, R.F. Scott'. Robert Falcon Scott. Autograph letter signed, 1 p. octavo, on embossed letterhead '56, Oakley Street, Chelsea Embankment', dated 'Oct. 29th [1905?]', addressed to Mr. Home. 'Many thanks for the photographs, also for the Spheres which you have so kindly sent me from time to time. Yours sincerely, R.F. Scott. Both letters are torn along an original horizontal fold and have old tape residue, but are complete and legible. Provenance: Private collection, Australia; by descent from an associate of the journalist at The Sphere.

A grouping of Three (3) Drawing Books by Ethel Pratt c1910.

, 1910. 1910. Three (3) carefully constructed homemade books with pencil drawn sketches of the day to day life of one young girl, Ethel Pratt. The books appear to span a period of time beginning when a young talented girl created simple naive sketches, some embellished with crayon. A loose page depicts a young girl reading a book to a bunny with other rabbits looking on. Others depict her friends, often with dolls. One scene shows a horrified young girl watching a dog carrying her dolly away. As she matures the drawing become more complex and boys begin to appeal.

New York City: D. Van Nostrand, 1910. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 56 Illustrations. Signed by Author(s). 1st Printing Xii, 119 + Large Catalog At End. Green Cloth, Lightly Worn But Most Of Fragile White Lettering Has Rubbed Away, No Fraying Or Stains. Hinges Solid. Signature Of "George F Haller / Sept 14 1910" On Front Endpaper, With Remains Of Tipped In Printed Paper Label Beneath The Signature, Of Which Only A "T" Remains, Possibly A Publisher's Note. In 1915 Cunningham (1889-1965) Started The Audio Tron Sales Company In San Francisco. Based On The West Coast, He Was In Direct Competition With Lee De Forest, A Leading Manufacturer Of Triodes Sold Under The Audion Brand. Before 1915, Triode Vacuum Tubes Were Spherical Or Shaped Like An Incandescent Light Bulb. Cunningham Took A Different Route. His Triode Tube Was Tubular And Had The Capability Of Being Double Sided. This Design Allowed Dual Filaments, Which Provided Longer Operating Life. Cunningham Was Able To Produce This Vacuum Tube In Large Numbers And Maintain Quality. The Rise In Amateur Radio Interest Was A Great Asset To Audio Tron Sales. This Design Proved Influential On Vacuum Tube Production, And Prompted De Forest To Come Up With A Tubular Audio. Another Important Design In The Audio Tron Tube Is The Use Of A Cylindrical Plate Instead Of The Typical Flat Plate In The Audion. The Cylindrical Plate Provided Better Gain And Tube Efficiency. This Design For The Audio Tron Was Probably Inspired By George Halle. In 1916, Elmer T. Cunningham And His Writing Partner George Haller Formed The Haller-Cunningham Company. The Main Purpose Was To Sell And Make Wireless Equipment. In Addition, Cunningham Provided Financial Backing To Otis B. Moorehead Late In 1915, To Start A New Vacuum Tube Company, Called Moorehead Laboratories Also Based In San Francisco, Ca. In July 1916 Otis Moorehead Marketed The Electron Relay Tube. This Vacuum Tube Was Similar In Appearance As Cunningham's Audio Tron. Like The Audio Tron Moorehead's Tube Would Cut Into De Forest's Tube Business On The West Coast And De Forest Would Take Legal Action On Moorehead As Well. Moorehead Would Later Make The First Military Tubes For The Us And United Kingdom During World War I. In 1919, The Radio Corporation Of America (Rca) Took Legal Action Against Cunningham For The Violation Of The Flemming And Deforest Patents. The Decision Made By The Us District Court For Northern California Proved Quite Favorable To Cunningham. By 1921, Audio Tron Manufacturing Company Started Slowly Changing Their Name To "E.T. Cunningham Inc." In Later Years After The Court Decision, Cunningham Played A Bigger Part In Rca's Business Activities. According To The Rca Publication " Rca A Historical Perspective" By 1931 The E.T. Cunningham Company Became An Integral Part Of Rca And Consolidated With The Rca Radiotron Company, Giving Rca Rights To The Use Of The Cunningham Brand. In Addition, Elmer T. Cunningham Became A Part Of The Rca Organization. In 1932 His Name Appears On Page 16 Of The August-September Edition Of "Music Trade Review" As President Of Rca Radiotron Division (Vacuum Tube Production And Distribution. By The Mid 1930S He Rose To The Position Of President Of Rca Manufacturing Division. Haller Was In A Responsible Position With Westinghouse In 1910. He Wrote The Use And Care Of Storage Batteries In 1916. He Became Vice President And General Manager Of Haller Cunningham Electric And In 1917 Was Traveling Throughout The U.S. Arranging For Installation Of Their Extensively Patented Wireless Equipment On Steamers.         Deirdre of the Sorrows. [Preface by W.B. Yeats]

Printed for John Quinn, New York 1910 - One of 5 printed on pure vellum of a total of 10 surviving copies. [viii], [1]-90, [91] pp., with [9] added pages of corrections. 1 vols. 4to. One of 5 copies on vellum, with the corrections. Deirdre of the Sorrows was left unfinished at Synge's death in 1909. The play was completed by Yeats, who also contributed a Preface, and was first published by the Cuala Press in 1910. This is one of five copies on vellum of the first American edition, privately printed for John Quinn in an edition of 50. In comparing his printed edition (which follows the Cuala Press printing) to Synge's manuscript, Quinn noted an abundance of errors. An inserted 9-page printed errata at the rear of this copy is prefaced with a note by Quinn that he had destroyed all but 10 copies (the five on vellum and five on paper) and that a corrected edition is in preparation. "It is clear however, from the Quinn Sale catalogue, item 9982a, that this new edition never got beyond the proof stage, and it is not known exactly how many copies of the original issue had the corrections inserted" (Wade). Wade 246; Quinn sale 9982a. Provenance: John Quinn, to his sister Julia, and by descent in the family Full ivory vellum titled in gilt. Fine. Green morocco backed slipcase and chemise [viii], [1]-90, [91] pp., with [9] added pages of corrections. 1 vols. 4to One of 5 printed on pure vellum of a total of 10 surviving copies.         Decorative leathers applied to modern furniture.

      - Amsterdam, J. Brandt & Zoon, ca. 1910-1916. Folio (37.0 x 30.0 cm). With 36 original photographs of furniture leather crafting such as, chairs, clocks and smoking stands, each with a handwritten caption, on 34 leaves. Original full leather, with gilt title and vignette on the front board. Marbled endpapers.l J. Brandt & Zoon was an Amsterdam based bookbinder and paper wholesaler, active from 1742 until the mid-20th century, when it merged with P. Proost & Zoon, another Amsterdam firm, founded in 1842. The present volume is apparently a display of their craftsmanship, as it is meticulously bound and gilted. It contains 33 framed photographs of contemporary decorative furniture, all in a style transitional between Jugendstil, or Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. Many items show the characteristic ornamentation of the "Amsterdamse School", a mainly architectonical art movement characterized by the profuse use of ornaments, chiefly inspired by nature and by Indonesian art. Buildings and interiors in typical Amsterdamse School style were made between 1912 and 1925. What we see here are early examples, in which the use of fluent, curved lines - more typical for Art Nouveau, are still present. A few boards in the rear removed. Firm stamp on front flyleaf verso. A unique item in a very good state. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Sights and Scenes in Fair Japan.

Tokyo: Imperial Government Railways. (circa1910). 50 delicate hand coloured collotype plates on high quality stiff card each captioned in English, presented in Japanese embroidered silk covered boards with tassle ties, All edges gilt., patterned gilt endpapers. The hinges of each image have been professionally repaired with Japanese paper and wheat starch paste. Neat pencilled annotations lower corners, leaves clean and bright. 26 x 38cm. This beautiful album proved very popular and was reprinted a number of times, in some editions all of the plates are in colour, as is the case with this copy, and at other times the edition only shows some plates in colour and while the others are in black and white. The work also appears in editions both with and without 2 maps, later editions in Western bindings.Although his name does not appear in this album it seems highly likely that this album was published by Ogawa Kazumasa (1860-1929). Described by Terry Bennett in his excellent work Japanese Photography in Japan 1850 - 1912 as a "Pivotal figure in early Japanese photography. He adapted cutting-edge Western technology in photo-printing processes to produce numerous half-tone and collotype publications which transformed the market.."The interesting and delicate scenes in this album include a number showing Japanese people at leisure, in a street scene, a crowd at a sumo match, people involved in their daily occupations and a number of temples, gardens and other places of interest to the early 20th century visitor to Japan. A very good copy of a charming album. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 155302).

Opus divinum, cui titulus historiae naturalis, multoqua[m] antehac unqua[m] prodiit in luce[m] castigatius, una cu[m] annotationibus Hermanolai Barbari ...Paris, Jean Petit (colophon: Nicolaus Sauetier), 1526. 2 parts in 1 volume (bound in reverse order). Folio. With title-page printed in red and black to the main work (bound second) and title-page to the index (bound first), both in woodcut border in four pieces. Contemporary or near contemporary calf, with the boards richly blind-tooled in a panel design; rebacked with part of the original backstrip laid down.

Bird 1910; USTC (2 copies); not in Adams; BMC French; Durling; Hunt; Wellcome. Very rare first Paris edition of Historiae naturalis, with the annotations by Hermolaus Barbarus. Pliny's Natural history is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman Empire to the modern day and purports to cover the entire field of ancient knowledge, based on the best authorities available at the time. It encompasses the fields of botany, zoology, astronomy, geology and mineralogy as well as the exploitation of those resources. It remains a standard work for the Roman period and the advances in technology and understanding of natural phenomena at the time. Pliny's accounts of some technical advances are the only sources for those inventions, such as hushing (using water to wash away soil) in mining technology or the use of water mills for crushing or grinding grain. Archaeological excavations have confirmed much of what he wrote. ''We know from Pliny that there were important pearl fisheries in the Gulf ... Pliny identifies Tylos (Bahrain) as a place famous for its pearls ... [He] attests that pearls were the most highly rated valuable in Roman society, and that those from the Gulf were specially praised ... The pearl related finds at the site of El-Dur indicate the site was integrated into the maritime trade routes linking the Roman Empire, the Persian Empire, India and South Arabia'' (Carter). Book 6 holds a chapter that gives the first detailed account of the regions around the Gulf, including what are now Qatar, the Emirates and Oman. Hermolaus Barbarus (1454-1494) was an Italian Renaissance scholar. His discussions of Pliny's Naturalis Historia was first published as Castigationes Plinianae in 1492, in which he made over 5000 corrections to the original text. Due to this work and other classical works he translated or edited he was considered a leader authority on Latin and Greek work on antiquity. With manuscript inscriptions on title-page. The two parts bound in reverse order. Binding rebacked and restored, but with most of the central tooling on the boards still clear. Text in very good dcondition, with only a couple marginal waterstains and some minor thumbing.
