        Manifesti dei Musicisti Futuristi

Milan: Direzione del Movimento Futurista, [1910]. Single sheet folded once to make [4]pp. Soft horizontal fold to middle, else a nice example of this early Futurist manifesto, the first on music. The first musician to "surrender to the persuasion of promises and liberation", Pratella was courted early on by Marinetti to join his new movement that he hoped would breathe new life into Italian culture. Though not as nihilistic as Russolo's Art of Noises published three years later, he still makes what at the time, were revolutionary demands that musicians break from the traditional, proclaiming in a later manifesto that" the new order of disorder should be created by destroying the ancient schemes."

Poems. With illustrations by Florence Harrison. Introduction by Alice Meynell.

Blackie and Son Limited, London 1910 - FIRST TRADE EDITION, 4to, pp. xxiv, 369, [3] + 36 tipped-in colour plates. 34 black and white full-page illustrations within the pagination, numerous head- and tail-pieces as well, all by Florence Harrison. Original white cloth, front board and spine blocked elaborately in gilt, decorative endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Front hinge strained before half-title, cloth very lightly soiled and gently bumped at extremities. Gift inscription to verso of flyleaf: 'Miss Moinet, with love from Gracie, 25th July 1918' A very nice copy of what is evidently a variant issue - the title-page is printed in black only and has the date of publication at the foot, while most copies have a title-page of a different design printed in rust-red and black, without a date; another variation is the presence of a vignette on the verso of the title-page here which is not found anywhere in the other issue. Apart from the title-page and its verso, the two issues appear identical, and no variants are noted by Jacobs. A sumptuous production, with Harrison's illustrations exemplifying pre-Raphaelite style.         Baseball In The Big Leagues: A Book for Boys (in rare original dust jacket)

Chicago: Reilly & Britton, 1910. Second edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good. Tan cloth lettered and with design of a baseball pitcher in wind up pose printed in red, black and grey. 308 pps. Illustrated with full page photographic plates. A fine, tight, bright example. In the rare original dust jacket with design duplicating that of the decorated cloth, some light rubbing to the panels, s short crinkeled tear top front panel and shallow wear at the spine extremities. The second edition, here retitled from the original "Touching Second". One of the keystone titles of early baseball, an anecdotal how-to from the Chicago Cubs second baseman and middle man of the famed "Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance" double play combination. Evers, known as "The Crab" as much for his personality (he was not on speaking terms with Mr. Tinker) as for his scuttling fielding style, was highly if grudingly repected by players of his era for his brainy "inside" style of play. The full page photo illustrations include Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, teammate Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown and others.

Bo?stva a kulty [Divinities and cults]

Prague: self-published (tip. Politika), 1910. Octavo (22.5 × 19 cm). Original pictorial wrappers; [21] pp., [6] leaves of plates, of which five color woodcuts; thirteen small vignettes in the text. Wrappers professionally restored to lower corners and edges; internally fine, with the plates in bright color. First edition of this book of occult-themed verse, accompanied by five full-page color woodcuts by the visionary mystic Czech painter and graphic artist Josef Váchal (1884-1969). The poet ?imánek (1883-1959) was a member of the hermeticist group Universalia and the symbolist movement Sursum, both of which were heavily influenced by occult theosophical and occult interests. Though a major Czech modernist writer, and considered by some a pioneer of Czech science fiction, ?imánek is today largely neglected. An important collaboration between poet and artist, combining attractive typography with Váchal's evocative and exotic color woodcuts. This is copy 179 of only 260 numbered copies. The colophone notes that "no new editions of this book will ever be printed," suggesting that Váchal's printing blocks were to be destroyed after its production. Sá ka 131.         [ALBUM CONTAINING TWENTY-SEVEN LARGE SILVER GELATIN PHOTOGRAPHS OF BERMUDA IN THE EARLY 20th CENTURY, INCLUDING STREET SCENES, LOCAL PEOPLE, ARCHITECTURE, AND LANDSCAPES]

Bermuda, 1910. Twenty-seven photographs, each 7 x 10 inches. Oblong octavo. Contemporary soft morocco album, front cover gilt lettered. Spine and edges worn. Photos mounted directly to light black card stock. Slight mirroring to several images, but well composed and well developed images overall. Very good. An attractive album of excellent Caribbean images, containing twenty-seven original gelatin silver photographs showing views of Hamilton, Bermuda and its environs during the early 1900s. The album comprises a number of street views, including one photograph of Burnaby Street, showing numerous commercial businesses including Kodak's, a dentist's officer, the shop fronts of a tailor and a cigar store, the Tourist Information Bureau,, and a pub, the Royal Arms. These images depict power lines running along the streets, and Bermuda Electric Light, Power & Traction Company, began the first electricity service on the island in 1908, so the album must date to just after that time. Other images collected in this album include one of the Hamilton Hotel, the first hotel in Bermuda (built from 1852 to 1861 and destroyed in a 1955 fire), which was located on Church Street in Hamilton and was important to the foundation of tourism in Jamaica, one of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, built between 1886- 1905, and another of St Paul's Anglican Church in Paget which was built in 1785. Additionally, many of the photographs show the interior or exterior of houses, including one photograph showing a family of local people sitting outside of a house, next to a case of "Rex Corned Beef." Other photographs depict several large gardens, including Victoria Park and its bandstand, which was built in 1889. Finally, several general views demonstrate the development of the city along the coast, including a road along the shore. Overall, a handsome group of photographs depicting the town of Hamilton, Bermuda, and its surroundings during the early years of tourism in the region at the beginning of the 20th century.

Macmillan's Coloured Wall Illustrations. Alice in Wonderland. 6. The Trial of the Knave of Hearts.

London: Macmillan and Co. Ltd., [c.1910] - Sheet size: 82 × 60 cm Some very light creasing and a touch of marginal spotting, otherwise fresh and clean. Presented in a black wooden frame with UV glass. Colour lithographed linen-backed wall-poster First and only edition. The use of John Macfarlane is the only instance of Macmillan having licensed illustrations for Alice in Wonderland by an artist other than Tenniel. In its original format, the set of six was issued joined at the head as a kind of flipchart, most likely intended for classroom display. The posters could be mounted on an easel and the illustrations displayed one at a time while the class read through the book. The complete set is now rare: OCLC locates just one set, COPAC adds another at Oxford. Many must have been split up and varnished for hanging in the schoolroom: two individual prints in that condition were offered at auction in 1997. As part of the celebrations for the first Alice's Day in 2007, the Bodleian staged an exhibition including the earliest editions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and amongst "Other highlights of the display [were] two posters from a set of 6 based on Tenniel's designs by J. MacFarlane." [Attributes: First Edition]

Laurier would later finance a third transcontinental line built by Canadian Northern Railway, in direct competition with Grand Trunk Pacific. Laurier writes: "My dear Alloway,*- / Many thanks for your kind letter. Give my thanks to / Mr. Whyte**. I have nothing that I could ask him; Sir Thomas Shaughnessy*** has / been kindness itself and I cannot wish anything more. // Please remember me to Mrs. Alloway and believe me, / Yours very sincerely, / Wilfrid Laurier." Wilfrid Laurier (1841-1919) was Canada's eighth and first French Prime Minister, holding office 1896-1911. Laurier was born in St. Lin, Quebec. He received a law degree from McGill University in 1864, and practiced law in Montreal and Arthabaskville from 1864-1896. Laurier was elected for the first time in 1871 to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, and was re-elected in 1874, this time to the House of Commons, where he would spend the rest of his career, nearly 45 years (1874-1919) stands as a record in Canadian politics. In a 2010 poll of 1,000 Canadians, weekly news magazine Maclean's asked who Canada's greatest Prime-Minister was. More than 80% of respondents replied "Wilfrid Laurier". *William Forbes Alloway, 1852-1920, businessman, banker, politician, and philanthropist; one of the richest men in Canada; **Sir William Whyte, 1843-1914, Superintendent Central Division of the Canadian Pacific Railway; ***Thomas George Shaughnessy, 1853-1923, 1st Baron Shaughnessy, President of the Canadian Pacific Railway, 1899-1918.

Poems With Illustrations by Florence Harrison Introduction by Alice Meynell

Thick 4to. London: Blackie & Son Limited, 1910. Thick 4to, xxiv, 369, [3] pp. Illustrated with 36 tipped in colour plates and 34 black and white plates by Florence Harrison. Original white buckram decorated in gilt, gilt top, front hinge cracking, very good. First edition with lovely late Art Nouveau illustrations. "Florence Susan Harrison was the second daughter of Captain Norwood Harrison and his wife Lucy. Their first daughter Edith died during early childhood and two younger brothers Arthur and Godfrey, were born later. The family were Anglicans and much of Florence's education must have been carried out by her closest family during long periods at sea with her parents. Between voyages, however, she attended a school run by a relative in Folkestone. Her first published illustrations appeared in Rhymes and Reasons (Blackie 1905) and the popularity of that book quickly led to a further commission entitled The Rhyme of a Run. Both of these books were aimed at the expanding children's market of the time. They were very well received : the Atheneum praised the "charming imagination in both verse and pictures".The following year Harrison received £100 (approximately £8500 at today's values) for a further collection of her verse entitled In the Fairy Ring. This was aimed at a more adult market and the Pall Mall Gazette commented "so excellent are the drawings that they earn Miss Harrison a very high place among the illustrators of children's books". In 1908 Blackie commissioned Harrison to illustrate a major gift book destined specifically for the adult market as part of their Fine Art Series. This appeared as Poems by Christina Rossetti. Such was the success of this venture that it soon led to contracts for two similar volumes entitled Guinevere and other poems (Tennyson, 1912) and The Early poems of William Morris (1914)." Although Goblin Market was already well know in the edition illustrated by Laurence Housman, Harrison's version is by no means overshadowed and quite holds its own, though of course it is but a small part of the whole book. There was a de luxe edition of 350 signed copies, with the b/w plates tipped in, but in the trade edition they are printed directly onto the page. Christina Rossetti only published two books in her short life, and Alice Meynell, herself a writer of renown, made the choices for this beautifully produced selection.
