Poems With Illustrations by Florence Harrison Introduction by Alice Meynell

Thick 4to. London: Blackie & Son Limited, 1910. Thick 4to, xxiv, 369, [3] pp. Illustrated with 36 tipped in colour plates and 34 black and white plates by Florence Harrison. Original white buckram decorated in gilt, gilt top, front hinge cracking, very good. First edition with lovely late Art Nouveau illustrations. "Florence Susan Harrison was the second daughter of Captain Norwood Harrison and his wife Lucy. Their first daughter Edith died during early childhood and two younger brothers Arthur and Godfrey, were born later. The family were Anglicans and much of Florence's education must have been carried out by her closest family during long periods at sea with her parents. Between voyages, however, she attended a school run by a relative in Folkestone. Her first published illustrations appeared in Rhymes and Reasons (Blackie 1905) and the popularity of that book quickly led to a further commission entitled The Rhyme of a Run. Both of these books were aimed at the expanding children's market of the time. They were very well received : the Atheneum praised the "charming imagination in both verse and pictures".The following year Harrison received £100 (approximately £8500 at today's values) for a further collection of her verse entitled In the Fairy Ring. This was aimed at a more adult market and the Pall Mall Gazette commented "so excellent are the drawings that they earn Miss Harrison a very high place among the illustrators of children's books". In 1908 Blackie commissioned Harrison to illustrate a major gift book destined specifically for the adult market as part of their Fine Art Series. This appeared as Poems by Christina Rossetti. Such was the success of this venture that it soon led to contracts for two similar volumes entitled Guinevere and other poems (Tennyson, 1912) and The Early poems of William Morris (1914)." Although Goblin Market was already well know in the edition illustrated by Laurence Housman, Harrison's version is by no means overshadowed and quite holds its own, though of course it is but a small part of the whole book. There was a de luxe edition of 350 signed copies, with the b/w plates tipped in, but in the trade edition they are printed directly onto the page. Christina Rossetti only published two books in her short life, and Alice Meynell, herself a writer of renown, made the choices for this beautifully produced selection.

FIVE PIECES OF EXCEPTIONALLY WELL-DRAWN, HUMOROUS POSTAL FOLK ART; Five hand-illustrated envelopes by an artist known identified only as "F. R." that were sent to members of the Allen family of Massachusetts and New Hampshire

Various New England and New York locations, 1910. Unbound. Very good. The envelopes range in size from 4.25" x 2.75" to 5.75" x 3.75". All of the artwork is in black ink, and two of the designs incorporate the cover's stamp into its design. Stamps include two 3-cent Washingtons from the mid-1860s (Scott #65), a 3-cent locomotive from 1869 (Scott #114), a 3-cent Washington from the 1870s (Scott #147), and a 2-cent Washington from the 1910s (Scott Type A140). All are in nice shape; two of the envelopes were trimmed along the right edge when opened. The clever artwork appear s to have drawn by the same person over a span of 50 years. The first shows a panicked rider on a runaway horse and is captioned "No exercise I find is milder, more charming and stirring to the intellect of a student than Horseback-Riding." ride Chesterfield's letters." (No doubt a reference to Lord Chesterfield's letters to his son.) The second is of a scholar in top-hat and tails absorbed in a book while walking down the middle of a railroad track oblivious to a freight train that is rapidly approaching from behind. It is captioned, "Theoretical Theology." The third has a drawing of a man dressed in somewhat tattered clothes carrying a large bundle under his arm. It is captioned "Ye 'Job Lot' man 'hopeful.'" The fourth features a pugnacious sailor in a boxing stance next to a postmarked Washington stamp which is affixed so it appears to be lying on the deck of a ship. It is captioned, "See Here Now!! Stop That! It is bad enough to give Geo. Washington a licking without then stamping on him." And the last shows a wagon, with a stamp affixed crookedly behind, being chased down by two men who are shouting, "Hi! You've dropped your stamp!". A very nice collection of postal art drawn by a witty and skillful artist.

        Andenken an China 1910-1912.

Ottawa 1910 - 8 x 10-1/4 inches, was folded not flat. Typed Letter Signed, dated Ottawa, 9th June, 1910, on stationery of the Prime Minister's office, addressed to W. F. Alloway, Winnipeg. 6 lines on one sheet. Minor 3/8 inch open tear in black border fold long open separations, W in Wilfred signature smudged, otherwise in near fine condition. Response letter to Alloway regarding two senior Canadian Pacific Railway management executives very positive. Laurier was a major supporter of Railway expansion in Canada. In the early 1900s, Laurier's government financed a second transcontinental railway, whose construction was entrusted to Grand Trunk Pacific. Laurier would later finance a third transcontinental line built by Canadian Northern Railway, in direct competition with Grand Trunk Pacific. Laurier writes: "My dear Alloway,*- / Many thanks for your kind letter. Give my thanks to / Mr. Whyte**. I have nothing that I could ask him; Sir Thomas Shaughnessy*** has / been kindness itself and I cannot wish anything more. // Please remember me to Mrs. Alloway and believe me, / Yours very sincerely, / Wilfrid Laurier." Wilfrid Laurier (1841-1919) was Canada's eighth and first French Prime Minister, holding office 1896-1911. Laurier was born in St. Lin, Quebec. He received a law degree from McGill University in 1864, and practiced law in Montreal and Arthabaskville from 1864-1896. Laurier was elected for the first time in 1871 to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, and was re-elected in 1874, this time to the House of Commons, where he would spend the rest of his career, nearly 45 years (1874-1919) stands as a record in Canadian politics. In a 2010 poll of 1,000 Canadians, weekly news magazine Maclean's asked who Canada's greatest Prime-Minister was. More than 80% of respondents replied "Wilfrid Laurier". *William Forbes Alloway, 1852-1920, businessman, banker, politician, and philanthropist; one of the richest men in Canada; **Sir William Whyte, 1843-1914, Superintendent Central Division of the Canadian Pacific Railway; ***Thomas George Shaughnessy, 1853-1923, 1st Baron Shaughnessy, President of the Canadian Pacific Railway, 1899-1918.         Comoedia Illustré No17: La Saison Russe a l'Opéra - June 1910 Special Issue

      - Revue Artistique bi-mensuelle - 2ème année - N°17 - 1er juin 1910. A fine example of the opulent special issue of the illustrated magazine devoted to the second Russian Ballets Russes season in Paris performed at the beautiful building of the Grand Opera, featuring illustrations by Leon Bakst and photographs of Nijinsky, Ida Rubinstein, Tamar Karsavina, Anna Pavlova, Michel Fokine, Catherine Gheltzer, Lubov Tchernicheva, Fokina and many others. The cover bears a striking costume design by Bakst, while the bound-in souvenir program shows Tamar Karsavina and Nijinsky in Sylphides. The 1910 repertoire of the Ballets Russes, listed on the first page, included L'Oiseau de Feu (in its first performance), Shéhérezade, Carnaval, Orientales, Giselle, Cléopatre, Les Sylphides, Le Festin, and Danses Polovtsiennes du 'Prince Igor," with music by Stravinsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Schumann, Borodin, and others. The season's troupe included Karsavina, Fedorova, Rubinstein, Fokine, Fokina, and Nijinsky and Nijinska (in their second season with the company). The program also includes many pages decorative Parisian advertising.Folio. 48 pp. Bound with staples and decorative green cord. Wear to spine, with rust to staples, edge wear and soiling and some small tears; internally clean and overall in very good condition. 9.75 x 12.5 inches (25 x 32.2 cm).The 1910 programme featured newly created pieces, such as Giselle, Les Orientales and Le Carnaval, and previously staged ballets like Le Festin, Les Sylphides and Cléopâtre. The star of the season was young Stravinsky's Firebird, which was first performed on 25 June 1910 and became an instant success with both audience and critics. As the composer's first commission from Diaghilev, it was the beginning of many significant collaborations and the piece that propelled Stravinsky to stardom. His music, combined with Michel Fokine's choreography, the lavish scenery and costumes by Golovine and Bakst, and star roles for Tamar Karsavina and Adolph Bohm, created a lasting hit. The final work on the program, Danses Polovtsiennes, dated from the 1909 season, in which Nijinsky and his sister had first joined the company. Fokine's choreography, to music from Borodin's opera Prince Igor, showcased the corps de ballet almost as a soloist in itself, with Adolph Bolm also dancing an important principal role. Although not as revolutionary as some of their repertoire, the work remained popular in the Ballets Russes repertory until 1929.Another piece produced specially for the second season was Schéhérazade. Described by Alexander Benois as "a wonderful spectacle to which I can hardly find a parallel", it was the first true creation of the Ballet Russes, because, except for the opera Prince Igor, all the other ballets in Diaghilev's first Paris season were fresh versions of already existing works. For financial reasons Diaghilev could not include any opera in his 1910 season, so for the first time he risked presenting only ballets. The cover of the 1910 issue features the famous colour photograph of Nijinsky and Karsavina in the ballet Les Sylphides. A four-page article titled "La saison russe à l'Opéra" presents the pieces scheduled for the season and shows pictures of some of the most famous Russian dancers - such as Fokina, Nijinsky and Gorchkova - in their beautiful costumes designed by Leon Bakst. Comoedia Illustré was a bimonthly artistic magazine published from 1908 to 1936 as a supplement to Comoedia. The latter was a French cultural periodical founded by Henri Desgrange, a French cyclist and sports journalist, who gained fame as the first organiser of the Tour de France. Comoedia Illustré played a crucial role in popularising the Russian ballet and making the programmes of Russian seasons available to the French public hungry for Russian exotics.         Modernisierte Ornamentik im Germanischen und Romanischen Stil.

      - Plauen: C. F. Schulz & Co., [circa 1910]. Folio 12 3/4 x 19 5/8", [1] title page, 20 leaves of color lithographs printed to recto only. Quarter black cloth portfolio, decorated black paper boards printed in red and gold, edges rubbed and chipped, corners chipped, with gray cloth ties. Plates have some finger marks and small stains to outer margins, slight foxing to edges, otherwise very good. A dramatic collection of German Art Nouveau or Jugendstil interior designs inspired by Romanesque architecture. The plates feature between one and nine panels, many with intricate knotted designs, both German and Romanesque floral patterns, round-headed arches, and acanthus-leaf decoration. Some incorporate animals such as deer, birds or dragons, printed in a palette of grays, greens, muted blues, reds, yellows, browns, and accented in gold. The first plate features a magnificent Angelic figure in a Romanesque architectural style. The two aesthetics are seamlessly combined to create a harmonious and palatial example of thoughtful ornamental design from the period. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Complete set of the Fairy Books:] Blue; Red; Green; Yellow; Pink; Grey; Violet; Crimson; Brown; Orange; Olive; Lilac.

London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1889–1910 - 12 works, octavo. Finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in early 20th-century varicoloured crushed morocco, spines gilt-tooled in compartments with gilt titles direct, each board decorated with a different gilt-tooled and colour onlay design, quadruple gilt border to sides, elaborate gilt-roll to turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Occasional minor scuffs to corners, no spotting within and the spines unsunned, a beautiful bright set in excellent condition. Bound retaining the original cloth spine and front panel, and the half-titles. Illustrations by Henry J. Ford, G. P. Jacomb Hood and others, in colour and black and white, as plates and to the text. First editions, first impressions, a complete set of Lang's much-loved and beautifully produced Fairy Book series, exquisitely bound in the first half of the century by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, each volume distinguished in its appropriate colour, with differing onlay and gilt designs to each board, and retaining the original decorated cloth bound within. The Fairy Books, edited by Andrew Lang and written up by his wife, were unprecedented in the international scope of their sources, and highly influential in giving many tales their first appearance in English. Though sets can often be found in much more recent leather bindings, this Sangorski-bound set is rare both in the high quality of the work and the relatively early date of its execution.
