This handsome series was a consequence of their association, and includes volumes under the titles KOKORO, LOTOS, IZUMO, BUDDHA, KYUSHU, and KWAIDAN. There were also twenty-five copies of each volume printed on Japan vellum. The series was popular; two additional works appeared in 1911 and 1912 and several of the volumes were reprinted in later years.

Macmillan's Coloured Wall Illustrations. Alice in Wonderland. 2. The Dodo presenting the thimble to Alice

London: Macmillan and Co. Ltd.,, [c.1910] . Sheet size: 82 × 60 cm Colour lithographed linen-backed wall-poster Some very light creasing and a touch of marginal spotting, otherwise fresh and clean. First and only edition. The use of John Macfarlane is the only instance of Macmillan having licensed illustrations for Alice in Wonderland by an artist other than Tenniel. In its original format, the set of six was issued joined at the head as a kind of flipchart, most likely intended for classroom display. The posters could be mounted on an easel and the illustrations displayed one at a time while the class read through the book. The complete set is now rare: OCLC locates just one set, COPAC adds another at Oxford. Many must have been split up and varnished for hanging in the schoolroom: two individual prints in that condition were offered at auction in 1997. As part of the celebrations for the first Alice's Day in 2007, the Bodleian staged an exhibition including the earliest editions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and amongst "Other highlights of the display [were] two posters from a set of 6 based on Tenniel's designs by J. MacFarlane.

Pen and ink drawing: Jewish "Ghetto Girl" dressed as a flapper and tempted by a string of pearls

Ca. 1910.. Very good condition. "New York's biggest problem is not its police, its fires, or even sanitation: it's its girls. ... The trouble is not exclusively with [working girls]; it is with girls in general in the United States, and particularly with girls in New York City. ... the working girl originates none of her evils; she acquires them from more fortunate sisters. ... The two perils which especially confront the working girl just now have been born of the dress and of the dancing she has copied from the girls who do not have to work." [Miss Trenholm, The New York Times, August 4, 1912.]& & A pen and ink illustration of a young woman dressed as a flapper, lying on her stomach, legs crossed at the ankles, and gazing at a jeweler who presents her with a long string of pearls. The flapper wears a silver gown, rolled dark stockings, and bobbed hair. The depiction of the jeweler is anti-Semitic, showing him as a stereotypical Jewish jeweler, with round spectacles and long white beard, offering the string of pearls to the young woman. In the early 1900s the young unmarried Jewish immigrant woman was stereotyped as a "Ghetto Girl", that is, a young woman tempted by clothing & jewelry and a life style far above the one to which fate had assigned her. With an indecipherable artist's signature at the lower right. 22 x 15 1/2"

Aisthesis, 2010. 2010. Softcover. Good. 20,6 x 14,8 x 4 cm. Gilt illustration on front board of each volume. Page dimensions: 224 x 145mm. Top page edges gilt. "The illustrations should be leniently criticized; with one or two exceptions they are from my own photographs and sketches. Perhaps they will give the reader some notion of the lonely country, the dizzy heights of the Trans-Himalaya, and of my old friends, the amiable, unassuming nomads." - from the author's preface to the third volume. The third volume is less common than the first two volumes. The third volume includes some historical chapters together with the account of Hedin's own explorations.         The Devil's Motor

London - Hodder and Stoughton 1910 - A very scarce, beautifully illustrated copy of this fantasy work by Marie CorelliIllustrated throughout with tipped-in colour plates by Arthur Severn. Designed to smell of motor oil -quite successfully. Marie Corelli (1 May 1855 21 April 1924) was a British novelist. She enjoyed a period of great literary success from the publication of her first novel in 1886 until World War I. Corelli's novels sold more copies than the combined sales of popular contemporaries, including Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells, and Rudyard Kipling. Corelli expressed a passion for the artist Arthur Severn, to whom she wrote daily letters from 1906 to 1917. Severn was the son of Joseph Severn and close friend to John Ruskin. In 1910, Arthur Severn and Corelli collaborated on The Devil's Motor with Severn providing illustrations for Corelli's story. Condition: In a decorative red cloth with gilt detailing. Externally generally smart, though with some marks to the spine and some light bumping. Internally, binding strained in places. Pages have some marginal age-toning and the occasional handling mark. Overall: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
