FINE ORIGINAL CHARCOAL DRAWING, "MY BOY, DON'T BE AFRAID OF ME", FROM THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER, signed upper right

n.p., ca. 1910 - A splendid drawing showing Huck and the old Welshman sitting in the latter's parlor at the moment Huck realizes the man has seen through his story of having seen a deaf and dumb Spaniard (in reality, Injun Joe). In pencil on the lower margin and on the back of the drawing are written the words, taken from the novel, "Huck had made another terrible mistake"-- presumably the picture's intended caption. In the book, this has been changed to "My boy, don't be afraid of me". A FINE AND DRAMATIC ILLUSTRATION TO TWAIN'S CLASSIC WORK Published by Harper & Brothers in their edition of 1910. Image size 22 1/4 x 15 inches. Fine condition

Preface [to Three Plays by Brieux].

[London: A. C. Fifield, 1910] - Page proofs, disbound. Some soiling and edgewear. Excellent condition. Page proofs, first state. The rare first state page proofs of Shaw's Preface to Three Plays by Brieux, which was published in 1911 by A. C. Fifield. Laurence located only 8 copies and notes "Shaw used copies of this proof state (and of the revised proof which followed) for purposes of translation and copyright deposit." It appears this copy was used by Shaw to make corrections for the first edition setting of the text. He initialled and marked the text "Confidential" and made corrections in pen throughout. Together with Preface to Three Plays by Brieux, published in New York in 1910 by Brentano's. The American copyright edition (Laurence A104c) with the front wrapper torn off. This edition incorporates some of the corrections Shaw made to the proofs. Laurence A104c.

        Nurserymen's Sample Book.

Rochester, N.Y., Rochester Litho. Co., D.M. Dewey, Vredenburg &c & Co., M. Brunswick & Co., Stecher Lith Co., [ca 1900-1910]. - Oblong 8vo., (5 4/8 x 8 4/8 inches). 86 fine chromolithographed plates and 29 half-tones with additional colour, of varieties of fruit including apples, pears, peaches, plums, grapes, currants, gooseberries, raspberries, blackberries, rhubarb, asparagus, strawberries, and even dewberries, trees, shrubs and flowering plants. Contemporary black cloth. Provenance: with the ink stamp of W.T. Mitchell and Son, Nurserymen of Beverly in Ohio on the endpapers, and their ink stamps with pricing information on some plates throughout. A fine album of extraordinarily colourful plates of plants of all varieties available from the Mitchells of Ohio, printed by a variety of printers local to Rochester in New York. Each plate is accompanied by a short caption describing the plant: this of the Wragg cherry "Origin somewhat uncertain: supposed to be Russian. Tree very hardy, enduring extreme cold, and succeeding generally. Quality fine." "As Rochester's gardening flourished a local bookseller with an interest in the subject, D.M. Dewey, began to collect and publish coloured plates of fruit, flowers, shrubs, and fruit-bearing or purely ornamental trees. Selections of these plates sold by Dewey and others from the 1850s to the last decade of the century were usually bound into pocket-sized books about ten by six inches with stout leather covers, often stamped with the name of the nursery or the salesman offering the plants portrayed within. Dewey also recognised the wider appeal of the coloured plates described by Charles van Ravenswaay as 'an innovation in American popular art' ("A Nineteenth-Century Garden", 1977, page 20.). Their polychromic attractions were extended to a larger audience in small selections from a larger-sized series presented in decorative bindings, . the earliest plates were simple watercolours, but later, as the demand grew, the technique of theorem paintings coloured with the help of stencils was used to multiply the number of copies as quickly and as cheaply as possible. Later still engraved or lithographed outlines were coloured by hand, and finally chromolithographs printed in colour began to replace more laborious procedures, though some of these were finished by hand too. Most of these processes involved the labour of teams of artists and colourists, one or two of whom went on to establish themselves as rivals to Dewey, though none achieved the same success" (Oak Spring Pomona 64).         A sheet of British Antarctic Expedition, 1910, letterhead, signed by Scott, Cherry-Garrard, Bowers, Pennell, E.R.G.R. Evans, and Murray Levick, dated June 1st 1910, Greenhithe.

      - 8vo. 1p., laid down on card, Levick’s signature in pencil, the remainder in pen, some signatures a little faded, the paper partly browned, now mounted, framed and glazed. An unusual record of Scott’s last expedition. On June 1st, Scott’s expediton ship Terra Nova sailed from London’s South West India Docks down the Thames to Greenhithe. Here Scott disembarked, and remained in Britain to raise additional funding after the ship continued on its journey south. He rejoined the Terra Nova two months later in Cape Town. The present sheet of expedition stationery derives from this moment in June 1910 when the Terra Nova reached Greenhith. It bears the signatures of not only Scott, but also H. R. Bowers (who later perished with Scott on the return from the South Pole), as well as Apsley Cherry-Garrard and G. Murray Levick (from the scientific staff), Harry Pennell (navigator), and ‘Teddy’ Evans, second in command. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        MIDNIGHT HOUSE AND OTHER TALES

London: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd.,. 1910. Octavo, pp. [1-2] [i-iv] v [vi] [1-2] 3-243 [244: blank] [note: first leaf is a blank],. title page printed in red and black, original gray paper-covered boards, printed paper label affixed to spine panel, top edge trimmed, fore and bottom edges untrimmed.. Edges of the text block and preliminary and terminal leaves foxed. (just a bit more than average for this book; the paper stock used is. prone to heavy foxing), free endpapers just a darkened (a bit less. than usual), spine label rubbed, a near fine copy. A nice copy of a. very scarce issue of this book which is seldom found in decent. condition. (#114006). First edition, variant issue. This issue, bound in gray boards, rather than the usual gilt stamped green cloth, is also printed on thicker paper stock, here measuring 28 mm across the top of the sheets, as opposed to 22 mm across the top of cloth bound copies. This appears to be a special binding of some sort, probably issued around the same time as the first issue cloth bound copies (there was a later issue circa the 1940s, but copies of the later issue we have seen were bound in cloth, not boards). Regardless of their status, these copies bound in boards are quite uncommon. Harvey's first short story collection, with many tales of the weird and supernatural. "It is usually difficult to distinguish the real situations from the disintegrating minds of Harvey's characters. Feverish moods and the unclear nature of personal relationships are the essential elements of his world. From the obsessive to the whimsical, William Fryer Harvey remains an excellent craftsman throughout the corpus of his engaging, sardonic fantasies." - Bleiler, Supernatural Fiction Writers, p. 595. Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Literature, pp. 88-9. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-81. Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 193-194.
