London: Luzac & Co., Printed by E. J. Brill, Leyden, , 1910. The Oldest Military Treatise in the World. Translated from the Chinese with Introduction and Critical Notes ... Tall octavo. Original yellow printed wraps. Housed in a plush-lined, black cloth flat back box, title gilt to the spine. Wraps overall slightly spotted and soiled, spine skilfully restored, contents clean, sound and partially unopened, a very good copy. First edition thus, arguably the best translation of Sun Tzu in the twentieth century. At the time of his translation, Giles was assistant in the Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts at the British Museum; he was probably the leading Sinologue of his day. It was not until the publication in 1963 of Samuel B. Griffith's translation that Giles met any sort of challenge at all. While Griffith's diction may be more fluent to the modern reader than Giles's, the latter's scholarly apparatus remains peerless. There had been two previous attempts at putting Sun Tzu into a modern European language: Amiot's French version of 1782, and Calthrop's English translation of 1905 (revised in 1908). Giles is amusingly waspish about both: "Père Amiot appears to have enjoyed no small reputation as a sinologue in his day … But his so-called translation … if placed side by side with the original, is seen at once to be little more than an imposture. It contains a great deal that Sun Tzu did not write, and very little indeed of what he did." Meanwhile Calthrop's 1905 edition demonstrates that "the translator's knowledge of Chinese was far too scanty to fit him to grapple with the manifold difficulties of Sun Tzu"; and in the revised 1908 edition, "Some of the grosser blunders have been rectified and lacunae filled up, but on the other hand a certain number of new mistakes appear." The work had specific relevance with world war looming, and is dedicated to the translator's brother Captain Valentine Giles, R.G., "in the hope that a work 2400 years old may yet contain lessons worth consideration by the soldier of to-day". Fragile and highly elusive, a very desirable copy.

A superb example of Rackham's interpretation of Wagner's libretti with dramatic series of illustrations, his only work for adults. In Norse mythology, a valkyrie (from Old Norse valkyrja "chooser of the slain") is one of a host of female figures who choose those who may die in battle and those who may live. Selecting among half of those who die in battle (the other half go to the goddess Freyja's afterlife field Fólkvangr), the valkyries bring their chosen to the afterlife hall of the slain, Valhalla, ruled over by the god Odin. There, the deceased warriors become einherjar (Old Norse "single (or once) fighters". When the einherjar are not preparing for the events of Ragnarök, the valkyries bear them mead. Valkyries also appear as lovers of heroes and other mortals, where they are sometimes described as the daughters of royalty, sometimes accompanied by ravens, and sometimes connected to swans or horses. The artistic and commercial roots of the McLoughlin firm were first developed by John McLoughlin, Jr. (1827-1905). The firm's publications served to popularize illustrators including Thomas Nast, William Momberger, Justin H. Howard, Palmer Cox, and Ida Waugh. After John McLoughlin, Jr.'s death in 1905, the McLoughlin firm suffered from the loss of his artistic and commercial leadership. In 1920, McLoughlin Bros., Inc. was sold to Milton Bradley, the Brooklyn factory was closed, and the company was moved to Springfield, Mass.         Mafarka il futurista. Romanzo. Traduzione dal Francese di Decio Cinti.

Milan: Edizioni Futuriste di "Poesia", 1910 - Octavo. Original orange printed wrappers. Spine lightly toned, slightly rolled and a little creased. An excellent copy of this fragile publication. First Italian edition of Marinetti's uncommon first novel, translated by his personal secretary. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed flamboyantly on the front free endpaper: "al caro e intelligentissimo amico dei futuristi, Koltonski" ("to the dear and intelligent friend of the Futurists, Koltonski"), and accompanied by a Futuristic lightning sketch of "Futuris Marinetti" pricking the sagging bubble of "Passatismo" (Traditionalism). A significant association: "Aleksander Koltonski [(1882-1964) Polish writer and translator], who was a resident in Italy and can be considered a protagonist in popularizing Futurism in Poland, issued a summary of the manifestos on Futurist music by Francesco Balilla Pratella and Luigi Russolo. Koltonski was clearly familiar with the collection I manifesti del futurismo. Prima serie (1914) and demonstrated his extensive knowledge in a groundbreaking article, entitled On Futurism as a Cultural and Artistic Movement, which also included an excerpt from Mariinetti's Zang Tumb Tumb. Koltonski emphasized the importance of Futurism for the political-cultural development of Italy, the innovatory character of its aesthetics, and the movement's fertilizing effect on life and art" (Przemyslaw Strozek, "Marinetti is foreign to us": Polish Responses to Italian Futurism in International Yearbook of Futurism Studies, 2011, volume I p. 89). Originally published in French (Paris: Sansot, 1909) as Mafarka le futuriste: roman africain. There would appear to be a number of issues of this first Italian edition: our copy (and others noted in OCLC) have "10o migliaio" (or "10th thousand") printed on the front cover; Copac notes a copy (Leeds University) with "11th thousand" and we know of a copy calling itself "6th thousand". These are all generally regarded as fictional. Mafarka, set in an imaginary African country, brought Marinetti to trial for obscenity. He was acquitted and the furore helped to put Futurism on the cultural map. Koltonski has made two neat inscriptions in Polish that appear to touch on the trial, saying that the book was "confiscated on moral grounds". .

St. Goarshausen.

Goarshausen, 16.Oct.46.". 25,3:19,6 cm. Schwacher Fleck rechts unten. Provenienz: Aus dem Künstlernachlaß. Vergleichsliteratur: Fr.W. Alexander: Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen. Das Lebensbild eines deutschen Genremalers. Leipzig, E.A.

Contemporary flexible embossed black calf post binder, gilt "Photographs" lettered to front cover, along with title of "New York State" in white ink to front cover, nickel-plate posts at gutter margin.. Minor edgewear with some rubbing and chipping to both album and. leaves. Some lifting to the photos, many of the leaves have wear to. fore-edges. 1 of the nickel posts has snapped due to the weight of. the textblock, a few leaves detached. Withal, a G+/VG remarkable. album.. A massive photo album brimming with over 1100 images of street cars, trolleys, motor cars, locomotives, service trains, interurban railway lines, and railroads across New York from the 1890s up to WWII. With neatly handwritten captions, photographer's notes often on verso, and even some typed text. The compiler has traced the development of the New York transit system before WWII, including many short lines, and trolley lines that have become defunct, and most absorbed into the modern New York railway system. This tremendous photograph album supplies one of the most lavishly illustrated visual archives of New York Interurban Railways, Street Cars, Trolleys, and the development of mass transit in the Northeastern United States before WWII we have ever seen. Included within the album are images of over 60 different Interurban lines, Trolley Lines, and Short Line railways, including the Albany Southern RR, Albany & Hudson Railway, Batavia Traction Co. (operated 1914-1927), Bennington & Hoosik Valley Railway Co. (1989-1927), the Coney Island and Brooklyn Railroad which was the first railroad of any kind to reach Coney Island, and after 1923 became part of the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation, along with the Brooklyn & Manhattan Transit, Brooklyn & Queens Traction Co., and the Brooklyn Rapid Transit. In addition, there are substantial sections devoted to the Empire State Railroad, the Fonda, Johnstown & Gloversville RR - significant for showing the ultra modern art deco Bullet interurban cars acquired in 1932 to boost ridership; the Schenectady Railway Company which connected Schenectady -Albany -Troy -Saratoga and was one of the most extensive trolley lines in the Northeastern US; as well as the New York Elevated Railroad, the New York Railways Co., which operated trolleys and streetcars from 1911 until 1925 when their lines were replaced with buses, the Rochester & eastern Rapid Railway which operated from 1901 until 1930 when the line was dismantled; the Steinway Lines Co., which began as the Steinway Railway Company and would become part of the New York & Queens County Railway until 1932 when it broke free and operated as a trolley line until 1939 when they were replaced with buses. This album is filled with trolleys, electric trolleys, electric motor cars, and electric locomotives which were built by numerous different companies including J. M. Jones & Sons Interurban Car Builders, Wason Manufacturing Co., Jackson-Sharp Manufacturing, Baldwin-Westinghouse, Sheffield Car Co., and many others. The photographers stamps on the versos of some images include Howard Humes of Balston Spa, NY, Fred Abele of Albany, NY, Charles A. Brown of Chicago, IL, and many others. The photos provide a vivid picture of New York in the first part of the 20th century depicting the advertising signage, the architecture, fashions, civic movements, the impact of Pearl Harbor with trolleys outfitted to look like Navy Recruiting posts, and much more. Of particular interest are many of the images showing abandoned trolleys and motor cars in wrecking yards, sideyards, others showing accident damage from being hit by trucks, some being sold at auction, and others being burned for scrap as much of the Interurban system was being scrapped for buses at the outbreak of World War II. . 1,111 real photographs tipped-in to thick black paper, mounted with corners. Two colored postcards, 2 maps, 1 large folding brochure for the Jamestown, Westfield & Northwestern Railway (many with photographers notes stamped in ink, many in pencil), including some copy photos from magazines, newspapers, and trade magazines, ranging in size from 2-1/4" x 3-1/4" all the way up to 9" x 11", including many panoramic photos and even some real photo postcards.

BUFFALO RANCH REAL WILD WEST. A LESSON IN THE HISTORY OF PIONEER DAYS. GAMES OF THE REAL RED MEN CAMEL RACES.

Milwaukee: Riverside Print Co., [circa 1910]. - Chromolithographic poster, 55 x 20 inches. Old folds and creases. Two small chips in the edges, one of them touching the edge of the border. Very good. Framed and matted. Not examined out of frame. An attractive, colorful, and action-filled poster for one of the many "Wild West" shows that were formed in the wake of Buffalo Bill Cody's success. The Buffalo Ranch Real Wild West Show was formed around 1910 and produced shows filled with spectacle, as evidenced by this poster. The bottom half of the poster is dominated by a Catlinesque image of "The Real Indian War Dance," as braves in headdresses and breastplates dance around a camp fire. A full moon illuminates the night sky, and a number of teepees are visible in the background. A large illustration in the upper half shows a number of Indians on horseback playing "equestrian foot ball," while others show fancily dressed Anglo women on horseback, as well as a camel race with riders dressed in quasi-Bedouin garb. An attractive poster for a little- remembered Wild West show and a fine example of the "West (and Near East) of the Imagination."

Not examined out of frame. An attractive, colorful, and action-filled poster for one of the many "Wild West" shows that were formed in the wake of Buffalo Bill Cody's success. The Buffalo Ranch Real Wild West Show was formed around 1910 and produced shows filled with spectacle, as evidenced by this poster, which promises a show "unparalleled in daring and desperate deeds" and also "history blended with pleasant instruction for all the people of the land." In the upper portion of the poster is a scene of a man - armed only with a knife - battling a charging bull, advertised as "the real Mexican steer contest throwing lassoing & riding the bull." In the background is an illustration of man with one foot on a galloping horse and the other foot on a charging bull. Other illustrations show "home life of the American Indian," Indians bearing rifles riding horses, a woman brandishing a whip and riding a buffalo, the "Royal Mexican Guard" on a line of horses, and a "a Congress of American Cowgirls." An attractive poster for a little-remembered Wild West show, and a fine example of the "West of the Imagination."

        Mafarka il futurista

Milan: Edizioni Futuriste di "Poesia",, 1910. Romanzo. Traduzione dal Francese di Decio Cinti. Octavo. Prima serie (1914) and demonstrated his extensive knowledge in a groundbreaking article, entitled On Futurism as a Cultural and Artistic Movement, which also included an excerpt from Mariinetti's Zang Tumb Tumb... Koltonski has made two neat inscriptions in Polish that appear to touch on the trial, saying that the book was "confiscated on moral grounds". .

Otto pagine in - 4. Sei pagine in - 8.

        The Inmates Of An Asylum

n.p: n.p, n.d. 12 silver gelatin photographs, paper size 3 and 3/8 inches by 4 and 1/4 inches, image size 3 and 1/2 inches by 4 and 1/2 inches, with slight variations in paper and border sizes throughout the group. No date, circa 1910-1920. In generally very good or better condition, with a few photographs showing slight creasing, surface imperfections, printing blemishes, but inconspicuous and nothing to detract from the imagery itself. A collection of photographs depicting what appear to be inmates at a turn of the century insane asylum, as such institutions were then called. One subject is identified, his name written (in pencil) on the back of the photograph; he is also the only subject to be twice photographed. When found, the photographs were accompanied by a pamphlet (not pictured) entitled "Mental Disturbances Observed in a General Hospital," written by the Chicago physician George Hall, M.D. (Columbus, OH; Ohio State Medical Journal; 1926), but it is impossible to know if this is an original pairing. There are some clues in determining the reason for and nature of this collection; one subject wears a jacket with intials stenciled above the breast pocket, but the initals are faint and partially obscured; other subjects are dressed in uniform clothing, suggestive of an institutional setting. Medical curtaining screens can be seen in the background of two photographs. Most revealing, however, are the facial expressions and body language of the subjects: they, like us, seem to know there's something wrong, but they, and again us, can't really know what it is. Uncommon as a collection, to state the obvious.

        Traite de mecanique celeste.

Complete with folding plate in Volume 4, all half titles and errata; with an extra errata leaf in Volume 4, uncalled for by Horblit. Volumes I and II printed on paper watermarked ?Mecanique Celeste.? In prize half calf, gilt arms of Glasgow University, spines elaborately gilt with morocco labels. With prize bookplate awarding this copy to George Johnson in the class of physics, April 1910. Johnson (b.1889) was a navel architect who graduated in 1912. During World War I he worked on the battle - cruiser Renown and submarines for the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. A fine set. pp. First edition, first issue, first state of the author?s monumental work in which all the laws of planetary motion are deduced from the concept of universal gravity. It includes all supplements found lacking in many copies. Considered a sequel to Newton?s Principia, Laplace argues that the universe was really a great self - regulating machine and that the whole solar system could continue on its existing plan for an immense period of time. This was a great step forward from the Newtonian uncertainties in this area. He also offered a brilliant explanation of the secular inequalities of the mean motion of the moon about the earth, a problem which Euler and Lagrange had failed to solve. This work also contains Laplace's fundamental contribution to the subject of capillarity in which he showed for the first time that capillary phenomena could be explained by the assumption of forces between the ultimate particles of matter, varying inversely as a power higher than the square of the distance. Laplace (1749 - 1827), considered the Isaac Newton of France, was one of the most influential scientists in the fields of mathematics, celestial mechanics, and physics. He dedicated this major work to Bonaparte (Volume 3), who honored him with the title of Marquis. Dibner, 14; Horblit, 63; Norman, 1277; Printing & the Mind of Man, 252

There are handling marks and wear to all extremities. The covers have storage foxing and spotting. The print on the front covers is faded but clear. On the spine, the printing has faded away.         Manet and the Post-Impressionists: Nov. 8th to Jan. 15th, 1910-11. 10 A.M. to 6 P.M.

Grafton Galleries, Ballantyne and Company, London 1910 - [6] pp 7-38 [39-40] A very good example of the catalogue published alongside what was 'arguably the most significant and the most controversial exhibition of paintings ever to be held in the UK'. The exhibition's organiser Roger Fry coined the phrase 'post impressionism' to describe the paintings listed within this publication which has been described as the 'Holy Grail among exhibition catalogues' and which introduced modernism to the British public. There are at least two issues of the imprint: this one has the 'Under Revision' notice (referring to the possibility of changes to the exhibited paintings) on the title page and also on the front wrapper. The printed buff paper wrappers are in much better condition than usually encountered with the backstrip present, both covers unmarked and in very good condition. There is only a light scratch to report on the upper cover and a 1x2mm chip along the top edge. Internally the text is complete as issued, unmarked and near fine. There are advertisements for the Medici Society, The Burlington Magazine and The Contemporary Art Society to the front endpapers with a monthly magazine, 'The Open Window', Pictures from the National Loan Exhibition, 1910 and the Medici Society prints advertised to the rear. Desmond MacCarthy's introductory essay is quite substantial, running from pp 7-13, and offering an early version of what has become the standard narrative of the emergence of the modern movement from late Cezanne and Gauguin via Picasso and Matisse. The paintings are listed by location from pages 17-38 with details where appropriate of owners. During its couple of months at the Grafton Galleries the exhibition polarised opinion and provoked extensive commentary. E M Forster wrote that 'Gauguin and Van Gogh were too much for me', and the exhibits by Van Gogh, Gauguin, Picasso and Matisse convinced many visitors that the whole exhibition was merely a hoax. It took Arnold Bennett to point out 'that London is infinitely too self-complacent even to suspect that it is London and not the exhibition which is making itself ridiculous.'         Die Weltwanderer [Signed / Unterzeichnet 2X by Gjellerup and 2X by Brandes; Excellent Association Copy] [Verdens vandrerne; The World Travelers; The World Wanderer]

Wilhelm Baensch, 1910, Hardcover, Book Condition: Fine, First editionA Fine copy of the first edition, first printing of this Karl Gjellerup novel in two volumes, in the Publisher's original tan linen flexible boards, SIGNED / UNTERZEICHNET TWICE BY KARL GJELLERUP (once on the half title of Volume 1 and once on the title page of Volume 2), ALSO SIGNED / UNTERZEICHNET TWICE BY GEORG BRANDES (once on each Volume's front free endpaper); AN EXCELLENT ASSOCIATION COPY (with the front board of Volume 2 showing a few quite small light stains to its lower portion, and a few stray marks to its yapped front edge). Scholar, Novelist, and Poet Karl Gjellerup was born in Denmark in 1857 and died in his adopted land of Germany in 1919, winning the 1917 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his varied and rich poetry, which is inspired by lofty ideals", sharing the Prize half-and-half with his fellow native Dane Henrik Pontoppidan. Early in his career, Gjellerup belonged to the naturalist school and was an enthusiastic supporter of the naturist movement and of the famed Danish Critic and Scholar Georg Brandes -- one of the most important and influential men in Literature from the 1870s through the early 20th Century and the primary theorist behind the breakthrough of naturalism in Scandinavia (typically referred to as the "Modernist Movement"), to whom the volumes herein described certainly belonged. Eventually, however, Gjellerup broke with the naturalists and became instead a romanticist author employing idealism in his work. In connection with the Prize presentation to Gjellerup, noted Swedish critic Sven Söderman cited the novel as Gjellerup's "last great work", noting that "with its half-Oriental, half-western moral, ... it contains beautiful details and holds our interest through a mysticism full of imagination as much as through the development of the action." In the Biographical information, which he prepared in connection with the Prize award, Gjellerup categorized "Die Weltwanderer" as being one of his Poetic novels --- such Poetic novels being "Der Pilger Kamanita" (1906) [The Pilgrim Kamanita], "Die Weltwanderer"(1910) [The World Traveller], "Der goldene Zweig" (1917) [The Golden Bough], and "Die Gottesfreunde" (1916) [The Friends of God]--- and stated that these Poetic novels "belong chiefly to German literature" and that they "...have found their true understanding and appreciation almost exclusively in Germany".The novel was published both in Germany (as "Die Weltwanderer") and in Denmark (as "Verdens vandrerne") in 1910. However, as Gjellerup, who married a German woman, himself cited the work by its German name, noted that it belonged primarily to German literature and found its true understanding and appreciation among the German people, and as he came to see himself much more as a German than as a Dane, the German edition is by far the more important of the two. [In fact, Gjellerup's receipt of the Prize was not celebrated in his Danish homeland as he was seen there to be primarily a German writer.] Signed copies of Gjellerup's works in any edition and in any translation are quite scarce. Our most recent review of the auction records revealed no signed copies of his works having come to auction.] A Fine ASSOCIATION COPY of the first, and most important, German edition, SIGNED / UNTERZEICHNET TWICE BY KARL GJELLERUP and ALSO SIGNED / UNTERZEICHNET TWICE BY GEORG BRANDES. A RARE AND NOTABLE SET INDEED.

        The People's Rights

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910. First edition, only printing. Paperback. This is the first edition, first state of this striking, scarce, and fragile early collection of Churchill's speeches. In 1904, Churchill quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class. In 1910, when The People's Rights was published, Winston Churchill was a powerful political force and a member of the Cabinet. From December 3-11, 1909 Churchill was on the campaign trail on behalf of the Liberals. The People's Rights is a distillation of these nine days of speeches, criticizing the House of Lords (which had rejected the Liberal Government's budget, thus precipitating the campaign) and championing Free Trade, a graduated income tax, luxury tax, and surtaxes on unearned income. Churchill's efforts were not wasted; as a result of the election, the Liberals would achieve a slim majority and passage of their budget. The People's Rights was published in an exceptionally perishable form, in bright yellow-orange paper wraps (with a halftone photo of Churchill on the cover) and printed on cheap, pulp paper. Consequently few copies survive, and wear, losses, and general deterioration is common to those copies that endure. There are two states of this first and only printing. The first state features and Appendix and an Index (at pages 149-152), while the second replaces the Index with a second Appendix. Here is the desirable first edition, first state. Given the inherent fragility of the edition, this copy is in very good condition. The illustrated wraps remain bright and firmly attached. The front cover is notably complete, with only fractional loss to the corners and trivial edge wear. The rear cover shows a .5 x .75 inch loss at the lower left corner but is otherwise complete. The spine shows some loss at the heel to a maximum depth of .75 inch, minor chipping at the head, and an abrasion just above and partially impacting the price. All title, author, and publisher print remains intact and clearly legible. The contents are toned, as inevitable with the cheap pulp paper, but both less toned and less brittle than we often see. First state is confirmed by a single appendix, an index, and p.71 numbered '1'. We find no previous ownership marks. Light spotting appears confined to the half title, title, and final Index pages. The final Index page shows a 2 inch closed tear. An original folded four-page leaflet advertisement and order form titled "Trade List of The Daily Mail Sixpenny Novels" is laid in.

Ph. (1804-1878).
