Lord's Oregon Laws Showing All the Laws of a General Nature in.

1910 - Annotated 1910 Compilation of Oregon Laws [Oregon]. Lord, William Paine, Compilers and Annotator. Montague, Richard Ward, Compiler and Annotator. Lord's Oregon Laws Showing All the Laws of a General Nature in Force in the State of Oregon Including the Sessions of 1909, and the Laws and Constitutional Amendments Adopted at the General Election of 1910. Published by Authority of an Act Approved March 19, 1909. Salem: Willis S. Duniway, State Printer, 1910. Three volumes. Contemporary buckram, red and black lettering pieces. Negligible shelfwear and soiling. Small chip to title page of Volume I, interiors otherwise pristine. A well-preserved set. * "In the prosecution of the work a systematic search was made of all session laws and codes from the beginning and the results carefully checked with previous compilations. The laws printed have been carefully read and compared with the original and authentic source, the enrolled bills, thus securing for the first time it is believed, an accurate text. The general order of the Bellinger and Cotton compilation has been preserved, as being most familiar, and therefore most convenient to the bar and public in general, and indeed it has been the plan to make changes from that excellent work only when a clear and plain reason required it.Special pains have been taken to bring the annotations down to date.": Preface, Volume I [iii]. Babbitt, Hand-List of Legislative Sessions and Session Laws 414. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The definitive Harvard Classics collection, also known as the Five-Foot Shelf of Books, is a monument to the world's great works of literature and history, and has been eagerly collected since it was first published in 1909. An "...anthology of classic works from world literature, compiled and edited by Harvard University president Charles W. Eliot that was first published in 1909. Eliot, then President of Harvard University, had stated in speeches that the elements of a liberal education could be obtained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. (Originally he had said a three-foot shelf.) The publisher P. F. Collier and Son saw an opportunity, and challenged him to make good on this statement by selecting an appropriate collection of works; the Harvard Classics was the result. Eliot worked for one year together with William A. Neilson, a professor of English; Eliot determined the works to be included and Neilson selected the specific editions and wrote introductory notes. Each volume had 400 to 450 pages or so; and the included texts are "so far as possible, entire works or complete segments of the world's written legacies." INCLUDES: Vol. 1: FRANKLIN, WOOLMAN, PENN: His Autobiography, by Benjamin Franklin; Journal, by John Woolman; Fruits of Solitude, by William Penn; Vol. 2.         Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Bergeroc, 3. X. 1910. Wissen Sie was Bestimmtes? Nun sehen Sie [ ]". - Poldini lebte seit 1899 als Komponist und Musiklehrer in Genf und seit 1908 in Bergeroc bei Vevey. Er komponierte Märchenopern (u. a. "Dornröschen"), die 1924 in Budapest uraufgeführte komische Oper "Hochzeit im Fasching" sowie Männerchöre, Kammermusik und Klavierstücke.

        [Photo Album]: Northern Africa Snapshots

Northern Africa. [circa 1910]. Oblong octavo. Measuring 7" x 8.5". Two volumes. Leather over paper boards with gilt decorations. A collection of 136 black and white photographs measuring 2" x 3", with some captions. Near fine photo album with some rubbing on one board with fine photographs. A snapshot album depicting a vacation to historical sites in Tunisia in the early 1900s. Shown are the indigenous people, including a nice photo of a group of local children, and landscapes of Tunisia including the ancient remains of Carthage, Dougga, and Kairwan, among others. These include an ancient well, the Temple of Mercury, the Roman Theater, and the Temple of Saturn, all captured in high quality amateur snapshots. There are also photos of the tented town marketplace of Kairwan and the Tunis market with camels used as pack animals to cart goods, as well as snake charmers with multiple cobras entertaining the crowd. The architecture of the ancient city can be seen with archways decorated with mosaics, and columns and relics from antiquity displayed throughout the region. There are also a few photos showing the harbor with sailboats and larger ships presumably used for cargo and transatlantic passengers. An excellent collection of early 1900s snapshots displaying the culture of ancient Tunisia. .

Chicago, 1910. Contemporary three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Spine ends and corners worn. Light foxing, otherwise the photographs are bright, rich, and clean. Very good. An exceedingly rare and amazing presentation copy of Gurley's book of Chicago park photographs, with only two known copies in existence. Gurley has inscribed the book: "To my friend C.L. Frank with the hope of many happy returns Wm. F.E. Gurley Feb. 2, 1911." A "home- made" book with a title page and three leaves of Contents, all typewriter carbon copies, and 115 gorgeous cyanotypes featuring Chicago locations. The photographs depict scenes in various Chicago parks, specifically Washington Park (1-10), Jackson Park (11-87), Garfield Park (88-93), Douglas Park (94-101), Humboldt Park (102- 107), and some "Miscellaneous Views Outside of Parks" (108-115). The views are landscapes, buildings, bridges, statues, monuments, and so on. The Jackson Park images include a number of structures left over from the 1893 Columbian Exposition. William Frank Eugene Gurley was a graduate of Cornell; the 1908 Cornell "Ten Year Book" notes him as the Curator of Paleontology at the Walker Museum, University of Chicago. He was also listed in the 1917 Illinois Academy of Sciences directory as a paleontologist. As the present book shows, he was also a competent and serious amateur photographer. He had a good sense of history and organization in both the photos themselves and in the arrangement of his book. A rare work, almost certainly produced in a small print run. As the titlepage and Index leaves are carbon copies, and as the maximum number of carbon copies which can be produced at any one time is limited to four or five, the whole edition was probably limited to that number. OCLC locates only one copy at the Library of Congress, which Gurley presented to the artist, Joseph Pennell. This is, and will continue to be, a useful source for Chicago historians, architects, landscape architects, and urban historians in general. A very pleasing book.

[Guatemala, and various locations in Central America, 1910. Various sizes, with many folios, broadsides, and octavo pamphlets. A few documents soiled or lightly dampstained, with scattered wear and chipping. Some age toning and foxing, scattered minor worming. Many items housed in individual plastic sleeves or paper folders. Overall, very good. A remarkable collection of Central American material, with over 2000 imprints from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the items were printed in various locales in Guatemala, with a scattering of imprints from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica. The imprints included span the breadth of the 19th century and on into the 20th. Approximately seventy-five percent of these date from the 1820s to the 1880s. This rich collection holds a tremendous amount of research potential in a number of areas. It includes a significant number of ephemeral broadsides and other political material, documenting the turbulent political scene in Guatemala from independence to the early 20th century. Guatemala and the rest of Central America - El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica - declared independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. This federation lasted until 1840, when civil war tore the region into separate states. From there, a series of presidencies and lengthy dictatorships dominated the political landscape, all documented in the material of the present collection. One important broadside from 1854 proclaims President Rafael Carrera (1814-65) to be the supreme and perpetual leader of Guatemala for life, a position he held from 1851 until his death in 1865. There are extensive runs of select items, such as the MENSAJE DE PRESIDENTE and the rebuttal CONTESTACIONS DE L'ASSEMBLE, which run from the 1850s through the early 1900s (about 100 items). There is also a series of DISCURSOS commemorating Central American independence dating to roughly the same time frame (about forty items). Several runs of official periodicals are also included here, among them the BOLETIN OFICIAL (about sixty issues from the 1830s); and the BOLETIN DE NOTICIAS (seventeen issues from the 1870s), which documents the last days of the government of Vicente Cerna Sandoval. In the later material there is a significant number of political broadsides and proclamas from the presidency of dictator Manuel Estrada Cabrera, many bearing a woodcut portrait of the president. Cabrera (1857-1924) was in office from 1898 to 1920, suppressing several revolts against his rule. Additionally, there are periodicals, government publications, and numerous pamphlets on a wide variety of subjects. The 1870s saw a flurry of modernization in Guatemala, and this collection mirrors that activity, with more imprints (approximately 600) from that decade than any other. A handful of items from the mid- to late- 19th century concern the lottery, the circus, bullfights, and the theatre in Guatemala. There is also a discrete cache of medical-related material, covering cholera outbreaks, whooping cough, and similar topics. Another segment covers the development of the railroad and the telegraph in Guatemala and Central America. There are also pamphlets on subjects such as religion, the military, economics, laws, and more. An impressive and extensive collection, documenting hundreds of years of Guatemalan history. This collection was built over many years by a scholar of the region, and clearly could not be equaled today.

        The People's Rights

London: Hodder and Stoughton, Ltd., 1910. First edition. Hardcover. This is among the rarest Churchill first editions – the first edition, only printing of The PeopleÂ’s Rights in the hardcover binding – one of only 100 bound thus. In 1904, Churchill quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class. In late 1909-early 1910, when The People's Rights was published, Winston Churchill was a powerful political force and a member of the Cabinet. From December 3-11, 1909 Churchill was on the campaign trail for the Liberals. The People's Rights is a distillation of these nine days of speeches, criticizing the House of Lords (which had rejected Liberal Government's budget, thus precipitating the campaign) and championing Free Trade, a graduated income tax, luxury tax, and surtaxes on unearned income. Churchill's efforts were not wasted; the election would give the Liberals a slim majority and passage of their budget. The first edition is not only an important work, but also the only edition published in Churchill's lifetime. A second edition would not be published until 1970, 60 years later. Nearly all first edition copies were bound in bright yellow-orange paper wraps (with a halftone photo of Churchill on the cover) and printed on cheap, pulp paper. For obvious reasons, they proved quite perishable and today these are scarce and desirable, even in halfway decent condition. However, exponentially more scarce is the publisher's original hardcover binding. As documented in Ronald Cohen's excellent Bibliography, "100 sets of sheets were bound on 20 December 1909". The hardcover issue is not only extravagantly rare, but was also bound "two weeks before the publication of the paper wrappers issue" and may have even been available in the last few days of 1909. (Cohen, Volume I, page 177) So rare are these that Churchill's first bibliographer, Frederick Woods, was able to examine only a worn and faded copy and incorrectly reported the binding color as "cherry-red cloth, flecked with pink". As the copy we offer confirms, the true color is a deep red. We have observed only a handful of copies on the market in the past decade. This copy is conservatively graded as good plus overall, sound and original but with flaws attendant to the age and inherent fragility of the contents. The original dark red cloth binding remains sound, with strong, unfaded color and sharp corners. The gilt remains strong, if a bit dulled. We note modest wear to extremities and overall scuffing with minor staining and soiling, most notably two small, whitish stains at the title on the upper front cover. The binding remains firmly attached to the contents with the mull fully intact, despite cosmetic splits to the endpaper gutters. The contents were printed on cheap pulp paper which always browns and becomes brittle. These contents are no exception, with the typical age-toning, more pronounced at the page edges. Nonetheless, being protected by the hardcover binding, the contents are better than those of most wraps-bound copies we see, which often suffer significant edge chipping in addition to age-toning. This copy does not have the p.71 mispagination affiliated with the first state, but does have a single Appendix and Index affiliated with first state wraps-bound copies, rather than the later state second Appendix replacing the Index. A single previous ownership mark in pencil on the front free endpaper reads: “To Bill | From Jack | Sept 1910”. The front free endpaper has a one inch closed tear at the lower gutter, while the half-title has a 1.25 inch closed tear at the upper gutter. There is fractional chipping at the lower gutter of the title page and Preface, a shallow chip at the p.1 fore edge, the same at p.151 of the Index, and a one inch horizontal closed tear at the fore edge of the final free endpaper, with a small loss at the lower corner of the same.       Milwaukee, 1910. Creases and closed tears. 6 x 3-inch portion in right edge in facsimile (including "T" in "WEST"). Quite attractive on the whole and in about very good condition. Framed and matted. Not examined out of frame. An attractive, colorful, and action-filled poster for one of the many "Wild West" shows that were formed in the wake of Buffalo Bill Cody's success. The Buffalo Ranch Real Wild West Show was formed around 1910 and produced shows filled with spectacle, as evidenced by this poster, which promises a show "unparalleled in daring and desperate deeds" and "history blended with pleasant instruction for all the people of the land." In the upper portion of the poster is a scene of a man armed only with a knife, battling a charging bull, advertised as "the real Mexican steer contest throwing lassoing & riding the bull." In the background is an illustration of man with one foot on a galloping horse and the other foot on a charging bull. Other illustrations show "home life of the American Indian," Indians bearing rifles riding horses, a woman brandishing a whip and riding a buffalo, the "Royal Mexican Guard" on a line of horses, and "a Congress of American Cowgirls." An attractive poster for a little-remembered Wild West show, and a fine example of the "West of the Imagination.

(n.p.): (n.p.). [c. 1910-1921]. A printed manuscript poem by Burroughs, his most famous, first published in Knickerbocker magazine in 1863, when Burroughs was 25; anthologized in Whittier's Songs of Three Centuries in 1875. At that time the poem had seven stanzas; over the years the weakest stanza (the sixth of seven) was dropped (by an unknown editor). "Waiting" appeared as the preface to Burroughs' Light of Day in 1900 with six stanzas, but even so the fifth stanza continued to trouble him. According to the Clara Barrus biography Our Friend John Burroughs, published in 1914, "a few years ago" Burroughs occasionally substituted a new fifth stanza, beginning, "The law of love binds every heart..." (Later renditions have this line reading "The law of love threads every heart.) But that too failed to satisfy him, and future renditions would have the original six (of seven) stanzas. This broadside has the six stanzas, with the short-lived "binds every heart" fifth stanza; it is printed in Burroughs' holograph, with an original water color of tree branches, and it is inscribed by Burroughs, for Barnard C. Connelly, and dated Feb. 9, 1921, the month before Burroughs' death. 7" x 9-3/4", bevel-edged on three sides; previously framed and sunned over most of the page; staining to two margins, touching only the date. A very good copy. Although Burroughs wrote "considerable poetry as a young man" (his words, from John Burroughs Talks), "a time came when I wrote no more poetry and destroyed most of what I had done previously...I am practically a man of a single poem." We have found reference to a smaller (4-1/2" x 6") leaflet of this poem being done earlier, by Alfred Bartlett, but have found no record of the printing history of this variation. First Edition. No Binding.

Vienna, 11. I. 1910. - 4to. 2 pp. To an unidentified recipient, refusing an essay and referencing Carl Jung, who was at the time editor of the "Jahrbuch für psychoanalytische und psychopathologische Forschungen": "Your various remarks make it easier for me to answer your question as to whether we can accept your patient's biography. I am not the editor, though you do assume correctly that Jung would take my request into account. As an editor I would have reservations about accepting the essay, as it consists only of autobiographical material without any analysis and we need the space more urgently for other things than collections of material. No matter how exact a self-account is, it is always something quite different from analysis, and cannot approach analysis even through an increase of details and sincerity" (transl.). - Left margin with punched holes (slightly touching letters), folds.

        The Birds of Australia.

London, Witherby & Co., 1910-1927. 13 volumes. 4to (350 x 255mm). With 600 hand-coloured lithographed plates after and by Keulemans, Grönvold, R. Green, H. Goodchild and G.E. Lodge, and 1 plain plate. Contemporary brown half morocco, spines in 6 compartments with gilt lines and lettering, topedges gilt. A large copy, and a very fine uniformly bound set in the best possible condition. First edition of the first major treatment of Australian birds since Gould's work, and one of the last significant works to be illustrated with handcoloured lithographs. The editon was limited to 225 copies only. Gregory Macalister Mathews (1876-1949) was born at Biamble, Castlereagh River, New South Wales. Over a period of 40 years he made an extensive study of Australian birds and was assisted by T. Iredale who was his secretary. "An enormous amount of information is contained in these volumes, in which the literature concerned and the question of nomenclature are fully treated. Under each genus synonyms, a brief diagnosis, a discription, and a key to the species are given, while under each form we find a detailed synomyny, information about distribution and as far as posssible, a description of the adult male, the adult female, the immature bird, and the nestling; the eggs and the nests are also described, and the breedings-months stated. Then follows an account of the habits and life-history of the birds, including long quotations from the literature" (Anker p. 163). "Time was also running out for J.G. Keulemans but not before he had started on Mathew's monumental work, 'The Birds of Australia', one of the most important ornithological treatises ever published... Keulemans completed 163 illustrations for the first four volumes before he died on the 29th of March 1912" (Keulemans & Coldewey, Feathers to Brush p. 27). The supplements and the 'Bibliography of the birds of Australia' are bound in the last volume. Copies in such pristine condition are rare.//Zimmer 419; Nissen IVB, 605; Anker 328.

London: Duckworth & Co.,, 1910. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt, frame to boards in blind, publisher's device to rear board in blind, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a custom cloth-lined solander box. Publisher's device to title page. Corners bumped, slightly rubbed and marked overall and more noticeably so at upper outer corner of front board, contemporary sticker ineffectually removed from front board at foot, hinge starting between quires D and E, contents lightly toned as often. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, this copy with Belloc's extensive holograph draft of a poem recognisable as Sonnet XXIV in Sonnets and Verse (1923) to the front free endpaper, and most recently in the collection of historian and auctioneer Anthony Hobson (1921-2014), with his bookplate to the front pastedown as usual, and a laid-in note in his hand identifying the original owner as noted author, diplomat and Conservative politician Duff Cooper, a close friend of Belloc. Hobson's note also traces the differences between Belloc's draft and the published version of Sonnet XXIV: "There are difference[s] of punctuation, also line 5 'Here on my hearth' altered to 'On my poor fire', line 7 'in the Pines' altered to 'in the trees'. Probably written in 1911 (see date at the top left corner of front pastedown": an intriguing and richly associative copy.

        Atlas Géographique

Paris: Logerot, Pauly, and others, 1910. A little wear to extremities of the card case, puzzles in excellent condition.. Six map puzzles, each measuring 330 x 240 mm., housed in the original colour printed card case. Geographical jigsaw puzzle set comprising six maps mounted and cut into parts corresponding to the colonial dominions of major European powers. This division of the world reflecting European territorial aspirations exemplifies the mood of the first decade of the twentieth century (a rivalry that, in good part, ultimately precipitated the outbreak of the First World War). Accordingly, this puzzle set has an interesting social history dimension as it tangibly demonstrates the overlap between colonialism and early childhood education. The map of Australasia and the Pacific is captioned Océanie dressée par M. Mrs. R. Cortambert et A. Vuillemin, and bears the imprint 'Logerot éditeur Quai des Augustins, 55'. It is a later printing of an engraved map of the same title published by Hachette in 1852. This lithographed version was prepared circa 1880, and includes a colour key dividing South-east Asia and the Pacific into the respective colonial dominions of England, France, Spain, the United States, Holland and Portugal. As depicted the Australian continent includes good detail of inland geographical features such as Mt. Stuart and Lake Eyre, and the Hammersley Ranges in Western Australia. The other five maps in the series are later publications, printed circa 1910, and are contemporaneous with the striking presentation case. They include a double hemisphere world map and the remaining four continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. The front board of the presentation case is itself a fine example of period design, with five beauties respectively symbolising each continent amidst a cornucopia of regionally specific natural products and commodities. The borders are ornamented with fauna of each of the continents and Australian animals include the kangaroo, emu, lyrebird, wombat, possum, thylacine and a gang of cockatoos.
