Typed letter signed from Michael F. Guyer to Thomas H. Morgan Dated Dec. 7, 1910 4 pages attempting to clarify his place in the history of the rediscovery of Mendelism. With a few of his mentioned offprints.

Michael F. Guyer. UNBOUND. "Dear Professor Morgan: In rereading you interesting discussion on the chromosomes in heredity (Am. Nat., Aug), I note on page 466 that you state that Sutton, Wilson, and Boveri were the first to point out the possible relation between reduction divisions and inheritance in hybrids. From the footnote concerning Boveri I infer that you are striving for historical accuracy, and since this is the case I should like to call your attention to the fact that long before any of their work appeared I had made the same suggestion, not only in one but in several of my papers. The papers of such an authority as you are naturally looked on as standard, and most of your pupils as well as those of other investigators will accept matters of historical statement like this unquestioningly and pass them on in their own papers without making further chronological review of the ground themselves. I beg leave, therefore, to call your attention to some matters of historical fact. First I should like to call your attention to the inclosed clipping from an article of mine which appeared in the ZOOLOGICAL BULLETIN, II, 5 for 1899. At a glance you can see that it deals essentially with what we now call the Mendelian phenomena although at that time, of course, Mendelism had not yet had it's renaissance. At the time the article was published I had not figured out the Mendelian ration of 3 to 1, although I was aware that there were more brown than white birds among the grand-decensants. The point I want to make, however, is that in this return to grand-parental types I had a definite problem in mind which I was seeking a solution." Three more pages of the letter provide his proof of his findings and the timeline. Included offprint from Cincinnati Lancet-Clinic May 9, 1903: The Germ Cell and the Results of Mendel. Signed by Guyer, with a line in the margin providing his proof from 1900. A page from his 1899 paper: Ovarian Structure in an Abnormal Pigeon with some staining, and the first page crossed out leaving page 212 only. His 1909 offprint: Atavism in Guinea-Chicken Hybrids. Most of the archive is in good to very good condition. The edge of the letter pages are creased with some tearing. Included is a copy of Guyer's 1900 Dissertation "Compliments of the Author" in ink front cover. Later "Hampton Carson" stamp of ownership. As well as Guyer's 1909 offprint entitled The Spermatogenesis of the Domestic Guinea (Numida meleagris dom.) Inscribed "Compliments of the author" has Edmund B. Wilson's ownership stamp front cover. "Michael F. Guyer was professor of zoology at the University of Wisconsin. In 1902, he independently discovered Mendel's laws from the cytology of spermatogenesis in pigeon hybrids."         Printed document signed

1910 - CHURCHILL, Winston. Printed document signed. London: July 11, 1910. Black-bordered printed document, one page, 8 by 12-1/2 inches. Framed with portrait of Churchill, entire piece measures 20 by 20 inches. $4500.Printed document, a 1910 letter of appreciation signed by Churchill, sent on behalf of King George V to Welsh Nonconformists for their resolution on the death of King Edward VII.The document, finished in hand and signed by Churchill as Secretary of State for the Home Office, July 11, 1910 and sent to R. Davies, Esq., Tuhwntirbwlch, Portmadoc [Wales], reads in full, “I am commanded by The King to convey to you hereby His Majesty’s Thanks for the Loyal and Dutiful Resolution of the nonconformists of Portmadoc on the occasion of the lamented death of His late Majesty King Edward the Seventh. I am to say that the expression of sympathy with Queen Alexandra has been laid before Her Majesty, who desires me to communicate to you Her Thanks.” On May 6, 1910, after a reign of less than 10 years, King Edward VII died and was succeeded by his son as King George V. The Nonconformists of Portmadoc who had sent this resolution were Christians who refused to conform to the Church of England. Under magnification, there appears to be some black shading under Churchill’s brown ink signature; this may have been caused by splaying of the ink or, when Churchill signed this letter, the ink was very light and he signed his name a second time, going over his first signature. Three horizontal folds, none through Churchill’s signature. Handsomely framed and in fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Reminiscences of Yacht Racing and Some Racing Yachts.

Glasgow, John Smith & Son (Glasgow) Limited; Aberdeen, The University,, 1910. Original white cloth, titles gilt to the spine, yacht club burgees to the front board in red, blue and gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Photogravure frontispiece with tissue guard and 4 similar plates, 4 plates of line-drawings. Errata slip tipped in before p. ix. Spine toned and ends lightly bumped, top edge slightly tarnished, irregular browning to endleaves. An excellent copy. First and only edition of one of the most desirable of the early twentieth-century yachting books. Finlay was Regius Professor of Medicine at Aberdeen for over 21 years and a keen yachtsman from his youth. "When the excitements and striving of racing gave place to the more sober, but still pre-eminently satisfying and health-giving pleasures of cruising, he sailed his yacht among the Western Isles, and wrote eloquently of the beauties of Skye, of the hills of Mull and Morven, and of the cliffs of Rum". Here he offers "anecdotal racing memoirs, 1850-1871, and 1891-1906, with observations on the yawl rig, Corinthian racing, single- and double-handed matches, and racing reports, together with the details of the races in which the author sailed" (Toy). Scarce, with some ten copies in institutional libraries worldwide, and seldom encountered in this condition in commerce.

CUALA INDUSTRIES, LTD., CHURCHTOWN, DUNDRUM CO. DUBLIN, IRELAND

[Churchtown, Dundrum] : [Cuala Press] N.D. - No Date [ca 1910? ]. Presume 1st edition. Original illustrated single fold pamphlet, 16mo, [4] pages. 18 cm. Describes the location and hours of the workrooms and lists articles for sale. One page lists the work of Cuala Industries, chiefly Embroidery by Lily Yeats, while another page describes the work of the Cuala Press: "HAND PRESS - - Elizabeth C. Yeats. We print and publish books by Irish Authors, Editor of the Press, W. B. YEATS. Also Hand-Colored prints from Drawings by JACK B. YEATS. Bookplates, and Illuminated Poems" (pages [2-3]) . The Cuala Press was an "Irish private press set up in 1908 by Elizabeth Yeats with support from her brother William Butler Yeats that played an important role in the Celtic Revival of the early 20th century . In 1902, Elizabeth Yeats and her sister Lily joined their friend Evelyn Gleeson in the establishment of a craft studio near Dublin which they named Dun Emer. Dun Emer became a focus of the burgeoning Irish Arts and Crafts Movement, specializing in printing, embroidery, and rug and tapestry-making. Elizabeth Yeats ran the printing operation, and Lily managed the needlework department. In 1904, the operation was reorganized into two parts, the Dun Emer Guild run by Gleeson and Dun Emer Industries under the direction of the Yeats sisters, and in 1908 the groups separated completely. Gleeson retained the Dun Emer name, and the Yeats sisters established Cuala Industries at nearby Churchtown, which ran the Cuala Press and an embroidery workshop. It was intended that the new press would produce work by writers associated with the Irish Literary Revival. They ended up publishing over 70 titles in total, including 48 by William Butler Yeats. The press closed in 1946. The Cuala was unusual in that it was the only Arts and Crafts press to be run and staffed by women and the only one that published new work rather than established classics. In addition to Yeats, Cuala published works by Ezra Pound, Jack B. Yeats, Robin Flower, Elizabeth Bowen, Oliver St John Gogarty, Lady Gregory, Douglas Hyde, Lionel Johnson, Patrick Kavanagh, Louis MacNeice, John Masefield, Frank O'Connor, John Millington Synge, John Butler Yeats, Rabindranath Tagore and others.         Eigenhändiger Brief m.U. R(odaun) 10.1.(1910). 7 S. 8°.

0 - Vor der Uraufführung von 'Cristinas Heimreise' an (Arthur) Kahane (am Deutschen Theater in Berlin). ".

Buffalo Ranch Real Wild West. A Lesson in the History of Pioneer Days. Games of the Real Red Men Camel Races

Riverside Print Co, Milwaukee 1910 - Chromolithographic poster, 55 x 20 inches. Old folds and creases. Two small chips in the edges, one of them touching the edge of the border. Very good.Framed and matted. Not examined out of frame. An attractive, colorful, and action-filled poster for one of the many "Wild West" shows that were formed in the wake of Buffalo Bill Cody's success. The Buffalo Ranch Real Wild West Show was formed around 1910 and produced shows filled with spectacle, as evidenced by this poster. The bottom half of the poster is dominated by a Catlinesque image of "The Real Indian War Dance," as braves in headdresses and breastplates dance around a camp fire. A full moon illuminates the night sky, and a number of teepees are visible in the background. A large illustration in the upper half shows a number of Indians on horseback playing "equestrian foot ball," while others show fancily dressed Anglo women on horseback, as well as a camel race with riders dressed in quasi-Bedouin garb. An attractive poster for a little-remembered Wild West show and a fine example of the "West (and Near East) of the Imagination."

Paris: [Mabileau & Co.], 1910. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Several creases. Small loss in image. Page toned. Proof copy before titles, colouring partially completed These two cars are identical to the 12.8 litre 4 cylinder De Dietrichs. Turcat-Mery seems to be a name plate associated with passenger autos, yet raced under the name of De Dietrichs in most cases. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.

LOGOS. Internationale Zeitschrift für Philosophie der Kultur. Herausgegeben von Georg Mehlis (Band 1-12) und Richard Kroner (ab Band 3). Band 1-22 komplett.

Tübingen: Verlag von J. C. B. Mohr (Paul Siebeck) 1910-1933. 22 Bände (= so vollständig). Gr. 8° (24 x 19 cm). - Band 15 leicht abweichend in Orig.-Leinen gebunden. Neuere Bände mit marmorierten Spiegeln und gesprenkelten Schnitten. - Ehemalige Bibliotheksexemplare; komplett eingeschlagen in selbstklebende transparente Buchbinderfolie. - Hogrebe, Periodica Philosophica 297. - Als komplettes Exemplar sehr selten.         Encyclopaedia Britannica Complete New Form 11th Edition - 32 Volumes in 16 [Encyclopedia]

Cambridge University Press, 1910. Later Edition. Large Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Eleventh edition. Minor wear to corners. 1910 Large Hardcover. Complete set, 32 volumes in 16. The last edition of the Britannica to be written entirely by experts - subsequent editions were significantly simplified. "The Encyclopædia Britannica (English: British Encyclopædia) is a general English-language encyclopaedia published by Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., a privately held company. Articles are aimed at educated adults, and written by about 100 full-time editors and more than 4,000 expert contributors. It is regarded as the most scholarly of encyclopaedias. The Britannica is the oldest English-language encyclopædia still in print. It was first published between 1768 and 1771 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and grew in popularity and size, its third edition (1797) and supplement (1801) reaching 20 volumes together. Its rising stature helped recruit eminent contributors, and the 9th edition (1875–1889) and the 11th edition (1911) are landmark encyclopaedias for scholarship and literary style. Beginning with the 11th edition, the Britannica shortened and simplified articles to broaden its North American market. In 1933, the Britannica became the first encyclopaedia to adopt "continuous revision", in which the encyclopaedia is continually reprinted and every article updated on a schedule."

Modern Development of the Dry Fly: The New Dry Fly Patterns, the Manipulation of Dressing them, and Practical Experiences of their Use

New York: E.P. Dutton, 1910. 2 volumes, quarto. (10 13/16 x inches). Half-titles, titles printed in red and black. Photogravure frontispiece portrait of Edgar Williamson on mounted india paper, 9 chromolithographic plates of fishing flies, 18 colour charts, 16 photogravures of fish and fishing spots on india paper mounted, 22 text illustrations; second volume with 33 actual fishing flies displayed in sunken compartments on nine heavy board mounts. Maroon half morocco gilt to style, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt First American edition, deluxe edition limited to 50 copies signed by the author, this set numbered 18. A total of 125 copies of this deluxe edition were produced: 50 for sale in the United States, and 75 for sale in the British Empire. The deluxe edition of this classic work is preferred over the regular edition for a number of reasons. The first and most obvious is the presence of a second volume including the 33 specimens of actual flies, tied by Hardy Brothers and/or C. Farlow's according to the author's very specific instructions, with careful attention paid to the colour and form of each fly. The second reason is the fact that the text is printed on fine quality Whatman laid paper that is also considerably larger than the paper used in the regular edition. Thirdly the plates, particularly those on india paper, are of a much higher quality that those in the regular edition. This work was aimed quite specifically at those who fished the chalk streams of southern England, but its central message, that the artificial flies should match their living counterparts as closely as possible, was understood to be applicable around the world. This dictum, together with the author's skills in conveying the joys and tribulations of fishing have combined to produce a work that is much in demand today. Litchfield 73.

Photograph Album including Archibald Hoxsey Flying an Airplane at the 2nd Los Angeles Air Meet in December of 1910

Seattle and Los Angeles, 1910. Photograph Album. Very Good. The album is approximately 7" x 11" and contains over 100 photographs taken between 1905 and 1911. The photographs range in size from 1" x 1.25" to 6" x 8". The highlight of the album is a series of six photographs taken at the 2nd Los Angeles Air Meet in Dominguez Field in December of 1910. Three of the photos show aircraft and aviators on the ground and three show a Wright Flyer in the air. Two of the Wright Flyer photographs are annotated "Hoxey" (sic) in the lower margin. Archibald Hoxsey was a famous early pilot employed by the Wright brothers who taught him to fly after meeting him at the first Los Angeles Air Races the previous January. Hoxsey is most famous for having taken Teddy Roosevelt on his first flight at Kinloch Field in St. Louis two months earlier. He set a world altitude record of 11,474 feet at the 2nd Los Angeles Air Meet on December 29th and died in crash at the field two days later. The other photos in the album are of friends and family including Cora's husband, Edwin A. Strout a prominent Seattle businessman, and her father, General (retired) Frank Taylor. The photos show the family enjoyiing an upper-middle-class lifestyle including children playing croquet, boating, adults playing tennis, the family's large home, debutantes holding pennants at the first hole of a golf club, General Taylor in uniform and mounted on a horse, General Taylor in civilian clothes carrying golf clubs, a man in beekeeping garb, a girl's tea party, a horse-drawn mail cart, children mounted on horses outside a public stable, adults in an automobile, two women relaxing on the yacht "Olympic," playing at the Santa Barbara beach in 1905, etc. The album also includes a large souvenir photocard of the 1910 Tournament of Roses Chariot Race, etc. The album shows some wear, heaviest at spine ends. The photos are mostly in nice shape; a few have dog-ears, corner wear, or small scuffs. Some have light wrinkles from the glue that was used to attach them to the album pages.

THE AMERICAN WOODS. EXHIBITED BY ACTUAL SPECIMENSAND WITH COPIOUS EXPLANATORY TEXT

Lowville, N.Y., 1910. Octavo portfolios. Text in original wrappers, samples in card mounts unbound as issued. Occasional natural cracking and warping to a few samples. Very good. Each text volume and accompanying samples within original brown cloth cover in matching original cloth slipcase, with metal catch and bosses to covers. Each contained in a brown cloth box, morocco label. This remarkable work was the lifetime achievement of Romeyn B. Hough, who devoted himself to the study of American trees, and who is best known for his HANDBOOK OF TREES OF THE NORTHERN STATES AND CANADA, long a standard reference work in American dendrology. In this much larger work Hough sought to describe the woods found in America, with a detailed description in an accompanying pamphlet, and with thin cross-sections of actual woods mounted and labeled on accompanying stiff cardboard mounts. Seventy-five to eighty of these actual wood samples thus accompany each part, or about four hundred separate samples in the present set of the first five volumes. This mass of samples provides a unique record of American wood types, arranged geographically. Generally each species is shown with wood cut on traverse section, radial section, and tangential section. The samples are so thin as to be easily translucent. The age of these specimens gives them tremendous importance from an ecological standpoint, as well as their great interest to students of American furniture and woodcrafts. The trees available to Hough at the time make such an endeavor impossible to contemplate today. The present set consists of the first five volumes. The first volume is the third edition (1910); the second volume is the second edition (1898); the third volume is the second edition (1900); the fourth volume is the first edition (1894); and the fifth volume is the first edition (1894). Hough issued his first portfolio in 1888 and his thirteenth in 1913. This was evidently all he intended to publish, since he lived for eleven years after the final portfolio appeared. In 1928, Hough's daughter issued a final supplementary volume. All of the portfolios issued by Hough were published by him in his hometown of Lowville, New York. Portfolios cost five dollars a piece, a very high price, reflecting the great difficulty in assembling them. Since subscribers came and went over the quarter century span of publication, and many only purchased the individual portfolios of interest to them, very few complete sets were assembled. It is sufficiently rare that TAXONOMIC LITERATURE only notes six of the parts. Parts I through IV cover New York and adjacent states, and Part V covers Florida. The remaining parts are not present here. Parts VI through X describe the Pacific Slope, Parts XI through XII cover the Atlantic states, and Part XIII covers southern Florida. The final part, XIV, continued with the trees of Florida. One of the greatest American works on trees and woods, a labor of love, here in a set of the first five volumes.
