SCRAPBOOK. Oblong scrapbook (8 x 10 inches), splashed. Photograph (silvered) pasted in (no caption), along with a newspaper cutting (What's in a Name), a handwritten poem by A Lang, 'A Moving Incident' dated 1910, signed by the author, written on 3 sides, folded, tipped in along blank side. In addition, a fold-out diagram, illustration and plan of Haymarket (includes Bookseller J Bain), 4 clippings from Tallis' London Street Views, double-column clipping of Haymarket, from No.1 to 71, fixed. Loosely inserted: Notice of Removal (1914), 3 order forms for A Bookseller Looks Back, 8 original b/w photographs (2 duplicates) of the exterior and interior of the premises at King William Street. A scrapbook of James Bain the bookseller in Haymarket and King William Street. Manuscript poem by Andrew Lang of 'A Moving Incident (to Lady Ritchie)' tipped in (on the blank side) along the fold, signed by the author and dated 14 July 1910. The author visited W. Bain at 14 Charles Street, Haymarket, where Bain is talking to a 'nursemaid' with a babe in arms and other 'frolicking' children. The author is surprised at this, and only later discovers from Bain that these were the infant great-grandchildren of his literary 'love' Thackeray. Lang is moved at a missed opportunity.       Litho. Dept. of International Stock Food Company, n.d. (ca 1910)., 1910. 20 1/2" x 28 1/4" colorful chromolithograph that promotes how International Stock Food will make the sows raise more healthy pigs. An elaborate and colorful broadside that was taken from a book given to purchasers of 25 pounds of International Stock Animal Feed. The lithographs were originally folded within the book so it is normal to see horizontal and vertical folds. The company was founded in Minneapolis in 1886, by Marion Willis Savage, and still is in operation today. It was sold in 2007 to new owners and the headquarters are now located in Canada. Savage manufactured and sold animal feed as well as veterinary supplies and used these posters as a means of advertising. The front side of the poster is colorful and promotes the use of hog feed in order to help sows to raise more healthy pigs. Testimonials tell of one sow raising 21 pigs or three sows raising 52 pigs. The reverse side contains testimonials from successful users of the feed. The company further says "It keeps sows healthy and extra vigorous so that they will give more and richer milk and insures their raising more pigs, if a practical test does not prove this true we will not charge you a cent for all you feed. Is this fair?" As a way of promoting his 3 Feeds For One Cent, Savage purchased, exhibited, and raced horses. The stable included Creseus, Directum, Arion, Minor Heir, and the legendary Dan Patch for whom he paid $60,000.00 in 1902. In 1906, Dan Patch would break the world record by completing the mile in 1 minute and 55 seconds at the Minnesota State Fair. The record stood for 54 years. In 1909 Dan Patch injured one of his legs. On July 4, 1916, both Dan Patch and M. W. Savage became ill. While Mr. Savage was recovering from surgery, he learned that his favorite race horse had died. Less than a day later, on July 12, Savage also died, his physician stated the cause of death was the shock of losing Dan Patch. M. W. Savage was 57 years old at the time of his death. An excellent display piece.

Milwaukee, 1910. Old folds and creases. Two small chips in the edges, one of them touching the edge of the border. Very good. Framed and matted. Not examined out of frame. An attractive, colorful, and action-filled poster for one of the many "Wild West" shows that were formed in the wake of Buffalo Bill Cody's success. The Buffalo Ranch Real Wild West Show was formed around 1910 and produced shows filled with spectacle, as evidenced by this poster. The bottom half of the poster is dominated by a Catlinesque image of "The Real Indian War Dance," as braves in headdresses and breastplates dance around a camp fire. A full moon illuminates the night sky, and a number of teepees are visible in the background. A large illustration in the upper half shows a number of Indians on horseback playing "equestrian foot ball," while others show fancily dressed Anglo women on horseback, as well as a camel race with riders dressed in quasi-Bedouin garb. An attractive poster for a little-remembered Wild West show and a fine example of the "West (and Near East) of the Imagination.

Gründete mehrere astrologische Forschungsgruppen u. Brandler-Pracht gab dann um 1918 sein grosses 6-bändiges Basislehrwerk "Astrologische Kollektion zum Selbststudium" heraus. Zu seinen Schülern zählten u.a.       Wien, 1910. - 170 x 110 mm.

The Riddle of the Sands.

London, Smith Elders & Co. 1910, 1910. Second edition. 8vo. Publisher's decorated black cloth, titles in white to the spine, unfortunately virtually all of the white lettering has chipped off. Light fraying to head of spine. Decorated boards sharp and clean with a couple of splashmarks. Internally clean.Illustrated with fold out maps and charts. A very good copy of the second edition of a book contentiously described as the first modern espionage novel, vying for the title with Kipling's Kim, published two years earlier. Originally written after he returned injured from action is South Africa and first published in 1903 the novel of encroaching conflict with Germany was highly influential and is actually credited with the founding of British naval bases at Invergordon and Scapa Flow; newly regarded as strategically important after examination of the scenarios in Childer's novel. Childers was of course a staunch advocate of Irish Home Rule and was found guilty of possessing a firearm in contravention of the Irish Emergency Powers Resolution and sentenced to death by firing squad in 1922. His characteristically humourous last words to the firing squad were 'Take a step or two closer lads, it'll be easier that way.' Author, soldier and intelligence officer :1 , British Government: nil.       [Cascades, 1910. Oblong quarto. Original black cloth. Minor edge wear and soiling. A few images slightly faded or with mild silvering, some photos loose, some photos apparently removed from the album. Overall, very good. An interesting collection of early images of Washington state backcountry and mountaineering in the majestic Cascades around Mt. Stuart and Mt. Rainier. Among the photos are views of mountains, glaciers, lakes, creeks, and waterfall in the vicinity; numerous portraits of mountaineers on trails, climbing, resting in camps, skiing down the slopes, posing in front of cabins, and more. Three images are captioned on the verso, "Mt. Rainier" and "Waterfalls near Mt. Stuart, Roslyn Wash." A nice example of vernacular photography.

The general order of the Bellinger and Cotton compilation has been preserved, as being most familiar, and therefore most convenient to the bar and public in general, and indeed it has been the plan to make changes from that excellent work only when a clear and plain reason required it.Special pains have been taken to bring the annotations down to date.": Preface, Volume I [iii].
