THREE LITTLE KITTENS and ( CAT STRUWWELPETER or FIDGETY PHIL ).

London, Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., No. 970, circa 1910.FIRST EDITION circa 1910, 6 panel panorama of thick board pages hinged with red cloth, colour printed both sides, a separate story on each side, both illustrated by Wain, brief caption below each picture, all dressed kittens, page size 235 x 180 mm, 9¼ x 7 inches. LACKING COVER BOARD PAGE WITH TITLES (i.e. 5 of 6 panels only). The images for Three Little Kittens were re - used in a painting book issued about the same time by Tuck with the No. 4063. The story on the reverse is a cats version of 5 Struwwelpeter stories: Fidgety Philip on the floor under the table cloth; the three kittens inked by Agrippa cat for mocking the Blackamoor; John who never looked where he was going and almost drowned in a stream; a version of the Huntsman where a hare with a rifle shoots at 2 cats; finally, a kitten disobeys his mother and sucks his thumb but with no nasty consequences. A Louis Wain cat version of Struwwelpeter was published by Tuck circa 1905 entitled Fidgety Phil and Other Tales, in the Little Pets series, with 16 pages including covers and with verses by Norman Gale. Hinges slightly worn with some small splits, a few very minor marks to some pages and some hinges, small closed tear to surface paper at edge of 1 image (we have found our mittens), neatly repaired with no loss, barely visible. A good defective copy of a rare book (lacking 1 board page). Neither the Three Little Kitten Painting Book nor our Panorama, nor Fidgety Phil are listed in the bibliography in the reissue of the Dale book on Wain. The painting book is not uncommon but we could not find a record of our panorama. Fidgety Phil is listed in Baumgartner Volume 1, page 24, No.29 and 1 copy is recorded in Liverpool University Library and 1 in Toronto Public Library but not in the Osborne catalogue. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

        Aeroplane Race.

Chad Valley, ca 1910, Harborne, United Kingdom: - An early board game featuring an aeronautical and geographical contest, with a wide variety of thrilling disasters for players to contend with en route. One of the notable Chad Valley Games. Chad Valley is an English toy maker which began as a printing and bookbinding business established by Anthony Bunn Johnson in Birmingham in the early 19th century. Players begin a 100 point course in London, and fly over Glasgow and Dublin across the Atlantic to Montreal. From Canada to Japan and then Australia, marking Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Onslow and New Zealand. The return route to Windsor Castle leads from South Africa to Cairo, Rome, Paris, Berlin and Dover. The planes illustrated are of the Wright and Bleriot type, and one resembles a Rumpler Taube, a pre World War I monoplane. There is a color illustration of a major site in each city, with London's illustration showing the Thames with important buildings beyond. The obstacles encountered by players include: "broken rudder, back to 70" at Berlin, and "falls into the Liffey, go back to 3" at Dublin. With a two fold chromolithographic playing board, with 3 painted metal markers in the form of planes (two damaged). There are no counters, di or metal shaker with this game. 54 x 26 cm. Board in very good condition, the box base somewhat flattened, the edges to the top mostly separated but present, image a bit dusty but good+.

        Heinrich Kley: Frau Potiphar (Originalzeichnung)

1910 - Feder in Tusche über Aquarell auf Papier. 42,5 x 35,5 cm. Links unten signiert. Rechts unten betitelt. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Cendrillon]. Les Mandores. Autograph musical manuscript excerpt of a ballet divertissement from act 2 of the the composer's opera Cendrillon. Piano reduction. With an autograph note signed in Massenet's hand on a separate leaf: "Quelques mesures manuscriptes du 2e acte de "Cendrillon" (1898) Paris 3 Nov. 1910."

      - Folio (350 x 270 mm). Modern maroon morocco with marbled boards. 4 pp., notated in ink on 20-stave music paper with blindstamp of H. Lard-Esnault Ed. Bellamy sr, Paris on one side of the leaf only.A fair copy of a piano reduction of "Les Mandores" in A major, 3/4 time. Tempo: "Assez Modéré (sans lenteur)"; metronome mark: "120 = [quarter note]." Autograph note to upper left corner of p. 1: "3 ème entrée." Several erasures. Cautionary key and time signature for continuation after final double bar (D minor, 12/8 time).System breaks and pagination marked up in pencil in an unknown hand, both matching pp. 172-75 of the first edition of the piano-vocal score published in Paris by Heugel in 1899. The markup, as well as the cautionary key and time signatures at the end, allow for the conclusion that the present copy is part of the engraver's copy of the opera. All leaves guarded and with early horizontal crease; slightly browned; small stain to final blank page. In very good condition overall. "Les Mandores" is part of an extended ballet divertissement in the second act of Massenet's opera Cendrillon. It is not included in Massenet's original manuscript piano-vocal score, dated 1895 (Bibliothèque nationale de France, département Bibliothèque-musée de l'opéra, RES-563); there, the "2-ème entrée" of the divertissement ("Le Fiancés") is immediately followed by "Le Rigodon du Roy," counted as "3-ème entrée." In the first edition "Les Mandores" appears as the "3-ème entrée" (pp. 172-75) and another new movement, "La Florentine," as the "4-ème entrée" (pp. 176-79); the "Rigodon du Roy" is renumbered as the "5-ème entrée" (starting at p. 180 ).The autograph manuscript at the Bibliothèque nationale is also notated on one side of the leaf only, is on the same paper as the present manuscript, and carries engraver's marks in the same hand. System breaks and page breaks match those of the first edition; pagination, however, does not. It appears that Heugel prepared, or at least planned, an earlier edition based solely on the manuscript in the Bibliothèque nationale, but as the premiere was delayed by several years, the publisher apparently put the project on hold. In the interim, Massenet added the new entrée (and made other changes as well), necessitating changes to the pagination of the printed score. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Sensitive Plant, The

1910. Percy Byshhe Shelley's The Sensitive PlantHandsomely Bound by Riviére & Son[RIVIÉRE & SON, binders]. SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe. The Sensitive Plant? London: Robt. Rivière & Son, 1910. Square sixteenmo (5 1/16 x 3 15/16 inches; 129 x 100 mm.). 46, [2, blank] pp. Title-page and initial letters printed in red and black. Handsomely bound ca. 1910 by Riviére & Son, stamp-signed in gilt on lower turn-in. Full dark blue crushed levant morocco, covers bordered in gilt surrounding an ornate floral design stamped in gilt, each with twelve inlaid red morocco flowers, spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board edges and turn-ins, cream paper liners and end-leaves, top edge gilt. Neat ink inscription on front free end-paper and a small gold bookplate. A fine example.Percy Bysshe Shelley, (1792-1822). In The Sensitive Plant, Shelley has separated his poem into three separate parts and a conclusion. In the first part of the poem, Shelley portrays a wondrous, beautiful garden, full of life and luminosity. Shelley uses several realistic depictions of flowers and plants to provide the reader with a detailed insight into the garden. These stanzas are full of details which helps one picture the garden that Shelley so beautifully illustrates through his words. As part one continues, Shelley introduces a contradiction into the garden, The Sensitive Plant. Unlike the other flowers, this floweret is not vivid in color or shape, and lacks the beautiful odor flowers are characterized for. Percy Shelley goes on to say in The Sensitive Plant?"For the Sensitive Plant has no bright flower;Radiance and odour are not its dower; It loves, even like Love, its deep heart is full,It desires what it has not, the Beautiful!

The American Woods, exhibited by actual specimens and with copious explanatory text

by the author, Lowville, N.Y. 1910 - (9 x 6 inches). Illustrations. 387 samples of wood, each wafer-thin transverse, radial and tangential sections illustrating 129 species, window-mounted in 129 card mounts. (Occasional natural cracking and warping to a few samples). Text in original wrappers, samples in card mounts unbound as issued, each text volume and accompanying samples within original brown cloth cover in matching original cloth slipcase, with metal catch and bosses to covers. Each contained in a modern brown cloth box with morocco label. Mixed edition. A representative sample of a rare and remarkable work on the woods of America. Volumes I-IV cover all the trees of New York and adjacent states, vol.V is on the trees of Florida. A contemporary reviewer called it `one of the most marvelous and instructive books ever made ' (Art Education). This remarkable work was the lifetime achievement of Romeyn B. Hough, who devoted himself to the study of American trees, and who is best known for his Handbook of Trees of the Northern States and Canada , long a standard reference work in American dendrology. In this work, Hough sought to describe the woods found in America, with a detailed description in an accompanying pamphlet, and with thin cross-sections of actual woods mounted and labeled in accompanying stiff cardboard mounts. These provide a unique record of American wood types, arranged geographically. Generally each species is shown with wood cut on traverse section, radial section, and tangential section. The samples are so thin as to be easily translucent. The age of these specimens gives them tremendous importance from an ecological standpoint, as well as their great interest to students of American furniture and woodcrafts. The trees available to Hough at the time make such an endeavor impossible to contemplate today. Parts I-IV cover New York and adjacent states, part V covers Florida, parts VI-X describe the Pacific Slope, parts XI-XII cover the Atlantic states, and part XIII southern Florida. Part XIV contained a continuation of the work on the trees of Florida with text by Marjorie Hough, using specimens and notes prepared by her father before his death in 1924. Hough explained the unique nature of the work thus: it is `illustrated by actual specimens, and being in this way an exhibition of nature itself it possesses a peculiar and great interest never found in a press-printed book. The specimens are.about 2 x 5 in. in size, and sufficiently thin to admit of examination in transmitted light.Looked at in reflected light they appear as in the board or log. These specimens are mounted in durable frame-like Bristol-board pages, with black waterproofed surfaces.and each bears printed in gilt-bronze the technical name of the species and its English, German, French and Spanish names. The pages are separable.and are accompanied with a full text.giving information as to the uses and physical properties of the woods, and distributions, habits of growth, botanical characters, habitats, medicinal properties, etc,., of the trees. The woods used for the specimens are personally collected by the author? and are sectioned and prepared by a process of his own device'. Complete sets of this work are very rare. The volumes were priced at five dollars each, a high price reflecting the work involved in assembling them. Since subscribers came and went over the 25-year period of publication and many only bought the volume or volumes on the areas that interested them. The rarity of complete sets can be judged from the fact that Stafleu and Cowan record the work as being complete in 6 volumes. Cf. BM (NH) II,p.880 (pts.1-8 only); cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 II, p.341. Volume I-V only (of 14), octavo [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Principia Mathematica.

Cambridge: at the University Press,, 1910. Large octavo. Original dark blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, cream endpapers, edges sprinkled red. Minor rubbing to extremities, a couple of tiny marks to front pastedown, internally fresh. A superb copy. First edition of one of the great rarities of modern science. In this work, Whitehead and Russell attempted to construct "the whole body of mathematical doctrine by logical deduction from the basis of a small number of primitive ideas and a small number of primitive principles of logical inference" (DSB, XII, p. 14). The belief that mathematics can be derived from logic is not only one of the principal philosophical theories of the foundation of mathematics, it has also provided some of the most important results in the formal analysis of mathematical concepts (cf. Frege, Peano). This belief found its fullest expression in Principia Mathematica. Sets of the first edition have become very rare today. Vol. I was printed in 750 copies and, due to the disappointing sales, the publishers reduced the printings of Vols. II and III to 500 copies each, so that only 500 complete sets in first edition are possible. From the library of Dolf Mootham (1933-2015), with his ownership inscription pencilled to the front free endpaper. Mootham was chief financial officer of merchant bank Hill Samuel in 1977, and became the finance director of Trustee Savings Bank in 1988.

Size: 32 Pp. x n.º (74), 29 x 21 Cm, 6 Kg. [Attributes: First Edition]

The South Pole: An Account of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition in the "Fram," 1910-1912

John Murray - Two volumes. First English edition,; 8vo; Volume I portrait frontispiece, two maps, 84 mostly photographic illustrations; Volume II three maps and two folding charts and plans, 53 mostly photographic illustrations; original maroon cloth, upper covers with red border enclosing image of Norwegian flag and lettered in gilt, spines with image of Norwegian flag and lettered in gilt, top edges gilt. The South Pole was published three months before Scott's death. As Kossow states it is to the publishers credit that they produced this set of real quality, incorporating the Norwegian flag, "despite realising that British disappointment at being beaten to the Pole would ensure that it was not a publishing success in the UK." A fine set some browning to endpapers, some light spotting to the page edges, in Volume II, there is a short repaired tear to the folding map, slight wear to head and foot of spines, extremities very lightly rubbed. A lovely set not often found in this condition.

        [Scrapbook]: Culver Military Academy

Culver, Indiana. 1910 - 1913. Oblong folio. Measuring 12" x 16". String-tied maroon cloth over paper boards with "Culver" stamped on the front board. Contains various ephemera, 80 pictorial postcards, and 53 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2.5" and 7.5" x 9.5", some with captions. Front board has detached but is present, slight foxing, and edgewear thus good only with near fine photographs.A scrapbook kept by David Burpee between 1910 and 1913 while he attended Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana. Burpee was the son of seedsman, Washington Atlee Burpee who headed W. Atlee Burpee & Co. out of Philadelphia. The company was the first seed company to succeed with a mail order system. After Washington's death in 1915 David took over the company as a seed merchant and horticulturist dedicating his time to the science behind cultivating seeds and creating new ways to assure the seeds would travel well. He was also interested in "plant breeding" and spent his life, according to a 1975 interview with People Magazine, "creating new and better kinds of flowers, plants and vegetables." Before he headed the Burpee Company, David attended Culver Military Academy and achieved officer status by the time of his graduation. The school was founded by Henry Culver in 1894 "for the purpose of thoroughly preparing young men for the best colleges, scientific schools and businesses of America."David's scrapbook extensively details his three years at the academy with photos of himself and cadets in uniform, in their barracks, and participating in athletics. A large photo shows the Culver Academy's track team as well as some action shots of Burpee during a race. He also saved programs and dance cards from plays and balls that were held at the school. The album contains an opening section of seven autograph pages with names, cities, and messages or "happy thoughts" from fellow cadets such as Richard M. Armstrong from Grand Rapids who wrote, "all the world loves a lover." Burpee includes pamphlets: "Introduction to New Cadets" and "Regulations for the Government of Cadets." The album also includes numerous photos of the cadets in military formations in full uniforms. They participated in nature hikes, drills, and Calvary practice. Burpee dedicated a large section of the book to pictorial postcards of the campus, Indiana, and various school trips, such as one to Washington, DC. The academy held special programs and dinners for holidays, pamphlets are seen here with dinner menus for Thanksgiving as well as special performances. There is also a large broadside for the Culver Mid-Winter Circus which included a Hindoo Juggler.Burpee left the academy in 1913 and went on to study at Cornell University until his father's death in 1915. He was given the nickname, "the Dean of U.S. horticulturists," and was constantly experimenting with new lines of plants. The seed catalogs were distributed twice a year and boasted over "1,400 different seeds, bulbs, shrubs, flowers, vegetables and trees." As of 1975 his personal goal was to create an all-white marigold which had been something he had been trying to create since 1953. According to the The National Cyclopaedia of American Biography: Permanent series, Volume 16, Burpee "achieved remarkable success in the conduct of the company's affairs displaying unusual executive ability wisdom and business acumen. He is not only a close student of horticulture and agriculture but is also a true devotee of the science."An interesting look at the school days of an American entrepreneur. .

An original watercolour painting: "These make our girls their sluttery rue, By pinching them both black and blue",

A beautifully painted, and delightfully detailed, original watercolour by Frank Watkins on white artist's card mounted on brown board, signed, with brown painted border and cream mount, image size 150 x 200mm, depicting a young serving girl in period dress washing dishes while beseiged by a group of frenzied winged imps, with neat caption in pencil beneath, presumably in the artist's hand, in fine condition. Frank Watkins (fl. 1910) is best known for his illustrations for "The Man From The Moon" by Philip Carmichael, published by Grant Richards, in 1909, which is a scarce and sought-after children's fantasy of the Edwardian period. We have so far been unable to trace the book in which this illustration appears. We have an accompanying handwritten note from the family in ink, on board: "This original watercolour is by Frank Watkins who married Maud Willson (A[unty]. Mo) elder sister (by 18 yrs & b[orn]. in Dublin) of Boo & my Mama Eileen Mary Willson ... .. He had apparently asked Maud to marry him "every year" for many years - & she was often the 'model' for his fairies/princesses etc. in his wonderful children's books - of which this painting is a characteristic & fine example, J.B.", with further information provided about the family line and the artist's residence in Bedford Park, Chiswick, where he acted in the Amateur Dramatic Society. The caption quote to this watercolour is from the text of Nymphidia: The Court of Fairy (1627) by the Elizabethan poet Michael Drayton; a verse which has been referred to as "the finest of all seventeenth-century fantasies."

John Brown's Career in Kansas: Paper Prepared for the Veterans of '56

N/P: N/P No date of publication, though circa 1910; Eight page pamphlet bound in original paper wrap covers, and later bound into a cardboard library binding; Author's inscription at top of original cover reads in full "Complements to Prof. Dunlap [Charles Graham Dunlap] / O. E. Learnard"; Library covers show the book plate of Professor Dunlap and two penciled library notations; There are no other library markings; Though showing light smudges, pamphlet remains in very nice condition and authors inscription is bold and clear; Learnard (1832-1911) founded the town of Burlington, was a district judge, and a lieutenant colonel of the First Kansas Infantry. He was a member of the territorial legislature and one of the first state senators. He chaired the Osawatomie Convention and helped found the Kansas Republican party, of which he was the first chair. He purchased both the Lawrence Daily Journal and the Lawrence Daily Tribune to consolidate under the name "The Lawrence Journal" which he edited until shortly before his death; This very scarce pamphlet disputes much of the popular and historically accepted lore of John Brown's time in Kansas.. Inscribed and Signed By the Author. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.

KENILWORTH, ILLINOIS [Cover Title]. Original Photo Album]

np [Kenilworth?], nd [ca. 1910]. Good. Oblong 4to. album with pebbled flexible leather boards and gilt titles, 7.25” x 10.75” approx. Seventeen photographs mounted recto only, all 4.5”x 7.5” approx. Remaining leaves blank. Bookplate of George F. Steele to pastedown. Album good only. Hinges cracked, edges worn. Board bowed. Contents however sound and overall near fine. A beautiful photographic study of the earliest planned community in the U.S. Includes a picture of founder Joseph Sears (above right), as well as those of several houses and buildings. Most images though of natural surroundings, an interesting facet as Kenilworth was also one of the first communities to incorporate landscape architecture into its development. While the album’s exact purpose is unclear (though we presume promotional or perhaps survey), a fine assemblage by an accomplished photographer that exhibits a strong Pictorialist influence.
