        [Photo Album]: Wooster University 1910

Wooster, Ohio, 1910. Good. Oblong quarto. Gray cloth over paper boards measuring 10" x 9" with "In those happy days of yore" and the image of a woman stamped on the front board. Contains 174 sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs affixed to stiff gray paper, the images measuring between 1.5" x 3" to 7" x 9.5" with some captions. A good only photo album with tears and loose pages with very good or better photographs with some tears.A photo album kept by a woman who attended Wooster University in Wooster, Ohio from 1907 until she graduated in 1910. Many of the photos show women around campus posing for the camera and caught being silly in candids. There are dorm room photos with walls covered in pennants and girls huddled together in bed smiling. One photo shows a girl in a silly costume with devil horns and a pitch fork. The women held numerous costume parties where they dressed as Native Americans, pilgrims, and a marching band. Featured throughout the album are numerous picnics and walks through the surrounding woods with oak leaves laid in. An early photo booth style strip of a young woman is featured as well. The woman who compiled the photos was clearly a student in the theater department. One group of photographs shows women who are part of an opera in 1908 dressed in kimonos with fans. A collection of 32 photographs, most 8" x 5.5", show three performances at the Phoenix Playhouse including "The Rivals," "Quality Street," and "Two Gentlemen of Verona." These photos show women acting in all the parts with elaborate scenery. Another section of 18 photos labeled "Senior Play June 1910" show the women outside dressed in medieval costumes possibly performing a King Arthur play, including a photo of two women in a romantic embrace, for the performance, of course. Two of the outdoor photos were combined to form a panoramic shot of the performance. Another panoramic photo shows the girls of the senior class in a row, dressed identically, holding each others waists.Wooster University was started in 1866 by Presbyterians and was founded with the theory that it would be open to anyone who qualified which included four women at it's founding. The first Ph.D. at the school was awarded to a woman in 1882 and in the same decade the first black student attended. This album was compiled after several years of refurbishment and reconstruction around the campus after a fire in 1901 destroyed many of the original buildings. An extensive album depicting a woman's education at a forward thinking university which stood by the belief that women and minorities deserved an equal chance to further their education.

TURKEY – PERGAMON / CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGY: PLAN DE L’ACROPOLE DE PERGAME COPIÉ BASSÉ SUR CELLE DE INSTITUT ARCHÉOLOGIQUE ALLEMAND AVEC QUELQUES NOTES SURE PERGAME MODERN DE CONSERVATEUR DES ANTIQUES A. G. SOFIANO.

[n.p., circa ]. 1910 - Chromolithograph in 3 colours (Good, minor stains, some wear with splitting and tiny holes along original folds since closed from verso with archival tape), 60 x 45 cm / 23.5. x 18 inches. A very rare and fascinating separately-issued map of the Acropolis of the Pergamon, one of the greatest archaeological sites of Classical antiquity, located near modern Izmir, Turkey, based upon the pioneering excavations of the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, plus more recent observations, with text in 5 languages, compiled by the conservator Aristodème G. Sofiano. This very rare, separately issued map showcases the Acropolis of Pergamon, one of the greatest sites of Classical antiquity, and since the late 19th Century one of the Mediterranean’s most impressive archaeological sites. Pergamon is located near the city of Bergama, not far from Izmir, Turkey, about 26 km inland from the modern-day shores of the Aegean Sea. The map, bearing text in 5 languages (French, Ottoman Turkish, Greek, English and German), focuses closes upon the ancient acropolis (orientated with the east at the top), which occupies the top of a plateau. The map is largely taken from plans made by German archaeologists in the 1880s, supplemented with more recent discoveries. The large compound is enclosed in walls, and features two major concentrations of buildings, located at the eastern and western ends of the plateau. Even 1,500 years after the Pergamon’s heyday, the city features many large and impressive edifices. Labelled in German directly on the map are various highlights, including the locations of the Theatre, the various walls, the Gymnasion, the Market and the location of the famous Great Altar. The key labels 39 additional sites by number. While the map is not dated, it was, based on its style and content, clearly issued a short time before World War I, likely around 1910. The typography is of that time and, on the verso, below the title are a series of statistics relating to the region’s population and economy that accord to the pre-war period. Notably, it records that the modern town of Pergamon (today’s Bergama) had a population of 19,330, of which a little over 60% was made up by ethnic Turks, a little over 30% by ethnic Greeks, while the balance was made up of Jews and Armenians. This demographic make-up would change dramatically following the Turkish War of Independence (1919-22), when the vast majority of the region’s Greek and Armenian residents were expelled. Ottoman Turkish scrip, as employed on the present map, was to be replaced with Turkish written in Latin characters in 1927. The map was compiled by Aristodème G. Sofiano, a conservator of antiquities. We have not been able to learn much about Sofiano, other than that he published a book on the ancient city some years later, Pergame Moderne et Antique avec plan-carte-gravures (Athens, 1930). Pergamon rose to prominence during the Hellenistic Period when, from 281 to 133 BC, it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon, a small state made fabulously wealthy by trade. Pergamon reached its height under Roman Imperial rule and was home to about 200,000 inhabitants, possessing the second largest library in the Classical world (after Alexandria) . It was also a major early centre of Christianity, and appears in the Book of Revelations as being one of the ‘Seven Churches of Asia’. Pergamon suffered a sharp decline in the Middle Ages and the receding shoreline of the Aegean left it far inland. The city was eventually abandoned, and the grand edifices were permitted to become overgrown. While the location of the ancient city was never forgotten, Pergamon was totally neglected until the German engineer Karl Humann (1839 - 1896) visited the site in 1864-5. Humann became completely enchanted by Pergamon and intervened to protect the marble ruins from the looting that had recently recommenced. He drummed up support in Berlin to have Pergamon properly excavated and protected, recieving financial su

        THE TALE OF MRS. TITTLEMOUSE

1910 - London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1910. Original blue-grey paper-covered boards with hexagonal pictorial onlay. First Edition of Beatrix Potter's tale about a wood-mouse named Thomasina Tittlemouse. The tale tells of her attempts to keep her underground home neat and tidy in spite of various unexpected visitors ("friends" they were called in the manuscript: this was changed to "visitors" in the book, but even more appropriate would be "intruders"). These include bees, a beetle, a ladybug, a butterfly, a spider and of course the debonair toad Mr. Jackson. The manuscript also included three wood-lice, but Warne objected that such creatures did not belong in a children's book; so they are instead described as "three creepy-crawly people" in the book.~There were actually two printings during (and dated) 1910, but they are identical; the third was not until 1911. Customers were given the choice of buying MRS. TITTLEMOUSE in blue-grey or cream paper-covered boards priced at 1/-, or in decorated cloth priced at 1/6. For this title the pictorial paste-down endpapers were revised to their present-day design, showing Mrs. Tittlemouse and a bee in the upper right corner of each paste-down.~This is a fine, attractive copy, with scarcely any wear at all (spine very slightly darkened). Linder pp 205-207 and p. 429; Quinby 18. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

FIVE PIECES OF EXCEPTIONALLY WELL-DRAWN, HUMOROUS POSTAL FOLK ART; Five hand-illustrated envelopes by an artist identified only as "F. R." that were sent to members of the Allen family of Massachusetts and New Hampshire

Various New England and New York locations, 1910. Unbound. Very good. The envelopes range in size from 4.25" x 2.75" to 5.75" x 3.75". All of the artwork is in black ink, and two of the designs incorporate the cover's stamp into its design. Stamps include two 3-cent Washingtons from the mid-1860s (Scott #65), a 3-cent locomotive from 1869 (Scott #114), a 3-cent Washington from the 1870s (Scott #147), and a 2-cent Washington from the 1910s (Scott Type A140). All are in nice shape; two of the envelopes were trimmed along the right edge when opened. The clever artwork appears to have drawn by the same person over a span of 50 years. The first shows a panicked rider on a runaway horse and is captioned "No exercise I find is milder, more charming and stirring to the intellect of a student than Horseback-Riding." ride Chesterfield's letters." (No doubt a reference to Lord Chesterfield's letters to his son.) The second is of a scholar in top-hat and tails absorbed in a book while walking down the middle of a railroad track oblivious to a freight train that is rapidly approaching from behind. It is captioned, "Theoretical Theology." The third has a drawing of a man dressed in somewhat tattered clothes carrying a large bundle under his arm. It is captioned "Ye 'Job Lot' man 'hopeful.'" The fourth features a pugnacious sailor in a boxing stance next to a postmarked Washington stamp which is affixed so it appears to be lying on the deck of a ship. It is captioned, "See Here Now!! Stop That! It is bad enough to give Geo. Washington a licking without then stamping on him." And the last shows a wagon, with a stamp affixed crookedly behind, being chased down by two men who are shouting, "Hi! You've dropped your stamp!". A very nice collection of postal art drawn by a witty and skillful artist.

Ganz überwiegend in tadelloser Erhaltung.

Original glass plate photograph, Honovi - Walpi Snake Priest, prepared by Curtis for the printing of The North American Indian

This is a splendid original glass plate made for Curtis's The North American Indian, the greatest photographic work on Native Americans. This portrait, titled Honovi - Walpi Snake Priest, with Totokya Day Painting, was published as a photogravure in The North American Indian, volume 12, plate 408, c.1910 Approx. 14 x 17 inches. Accompanied by a custom wall-mount light box. Excellent condition. A stunning display piece. "Take a good look. We're not going to see this kind of thing much longer. It already belongs to the past." - George Bird Grinnell to Edward Curtis, 1900 Edward Curtis was one of the most important American artists of the nineteenth century and the most celebrated photographer of North American Indians. Over the course of thirty-five years, Curtis took tens of thousands of photographs of Indians from more than eighty tribes. "Never before have we seen the Indians of North America so close to the origins of their humanity, their sense of themselves in the world, their innate dignity and self-possession" (N. Scott Momaday). Curtis's photographs are "an absolutely unmatched masterpiece of visual anthropology, and one of the most thorough, extensive and profound photograph works of all time" (A. D. Coleman). Curtis printed 2200 of his images as photogravures in his magisterial The North American Indian , which was hailed as "the most gigantic undertaking in the making of books since the King James Bible" (New York Herald). These photogravures were printed from large-format photographic glass plates, the vast majority of which were subsequently destroyed. Curtis devoted the twelfth volume of The North American Indian to the Hopi. He wrote of this photograph of Honovi, "This plate depicts the accoutrement of a Snake dancer on the day of the Antelope dance (see Volume XII, pages 146-149). The right hand grasps a pair of eagle-feathers - the 'snake whip' - and the left a bag of ceremonial meal. Honovi was one of the author's principal informants." Curtis's lifelong project was inspired by his reflection that "The passing of every old man or woman means the passage of some tradition, some knowledge of sacred rite possessed by no other; consequently, the information that is to be gathered, for the benefit of future generations, respecting the modes of life of one of the greatest races of mankind, must be collected at once or the opportunity will be lost for all time." The present stunning example is one of the very few glass plate photographs that have survived. The image contains a wealth of detail that was lost in the photogravure process, and when shown in the accompanying lightbox, it is a dazzling photographic masterpiece. This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the greatest monuments of photography in one of its rarest and most important forms.

        [Banner]: Crescent View Studio

[New York, 1910. Very Good. Muslin banner measuring 34" x 36" with "Crescent View Studio - Views of Residences, Buildings, Groups, Animals, etc." stenciled in black. Item is very good with some staining and edgewear. A banner presumably used by an itinerant photographer around 1910 for advertising purposes on the road. From what providence we can gather it is thought this photographer was from New York State or Northern Pennsylvania. We were unable to locate another example of this sign.
