Original glass plate photograph, Honovi - Walpi Snake Priest, prepared by Curtis for the printing of The North American Indian

This is a splendid original glass plate made for Curtis's The North American Indian, the greatest photographic work on Native Americans. This portrait, titled Honovi - Walpi Snake Priest, with Totokya Day Painting, was published as a photogravure in The North American Indian, volume 12, plate 408, c.1910 Approx. 14 x 17 inches. Accompanied by a custom wall-mount light box. Excellent condition. A stunning display piece. "Take a good look. We're not going to see this kind of thing much longer. It already belongs to the past." - George Bird Grinnell to Edward Curtis, 1900 Edward Curtis was one of the most important American artists of the nineteenth century and the most celebrated photographer of North American Indians. Over the course of thirty-five years, Curtis took tens of thousands of photographs of Indians from more than eighty tribes. "Never before have we seen the Indians of North America so close to the origins of their humanity, their sense of themselves in the world, their innate dignity and self-possession" (N. Scott Momaday). Curtis's photographs are "an absolutely unmatched masterpiece of visual anthropology, and one of the most thorough, extensive and profound photograph works of all time" (A. D. Coleman). Curtis printed 2200 of his images as photogravures in his magisterial The North American Indian , which was hailed as "the most gigantic undertaking in the making of books since the King James Bible" (New York Herald). These photogravures were printed from large-format photographic glass plates, the vast majority of which were subsequently destroyed. Curtis devoted the twelfth volume of The North American Indian to the Hopi. He wrote of this photograph of Honovi, "This plate depicts the accoutrement of a Snake dancer on the day of the Antelope dance (see Volume XII, pages 146-149). The right hand grasps a pair of eagle-feathers - the 'snake whip' - and the left a bag of ceremonial meal. Honovi was one of the author's principal informants." Curtis's lifelong project was inspired by his reflection that "The passing of every old man or woman means the passage of some tradition, some knowledge of sacred rite possessed by no other; consequently, the information that is to be gathered, for the benefit of future generations, respecting the modes of life of one of the greatest races of mankind, must be collected at once or the opportunity will be lost for all time." The present stunning example is one of the very few glass plate photographs that have survived. The image contains a wealth of detail that was lost in the photogravure process, and when shown in the accompanying lightbox, it is a dazzling photographic masterpiece. This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the greatest monuments of photography in one of its rarest and most important forms.

BRAZIL: MAPPA DO BRAZIL, BASEADO NO MAPPA DA AMERICA DO SUL DE STIELER.

Gotha (Germany): Justus Perthes, []. 1910 - Chromolithograph, dissected into 54 sections and mounted upon original linen, folding into contemporary green cloth slipcase bearing title label (Very Good, map clean and bright; slipcase quite worn with some restoration), 105 x 86 cm (41.5 x 34 inches). Extremely rare - a monumental, resplendently coloured map of Brazil, issued shortly before WWI as a promotional piece for ARP & Co., a Hamburg arms dealer and major supplier to the Brazilian Military, published by the venerable firm of Justus Perthes of Gotha. This extremely rare and resplendently colourful, monumental map of Brazil was made as a promotional piece by the German arms dealer ARP & Co. of Hamburg, which maintained extensive business interests in Brazil in the years leading up to World War I. The map distinguishes each of Brazil’s states and territories in their own bright hue, and covers all aspects of human and natural geography in great detail. The ‘Convençãos’, below the title, upper right, identifies symbols for dozens of different features, including the locations of forts, lighthouses, reefs and ruins; as well as symbols distinguishing cities and towns of various sizes. The map also delineates Brazil’s extensive (and constantly growing) railway system, nothing completed lines in bold red, while lines under construction appear as intermittent red lines. It also delineates telegraph lines and major shipping routes. As noted in the title, the map is based on Adolf Steiler’s highly exact map of South America, and shows that, by this time, all of Brazil’s international boundaries had been settled, including the once nettlesome border between Brazil and British Guyana, which was ratified in 1904. In all, the map gives the impression of rapidly industrializing nation, then enjoying an economic boom in the advance of World War I. Brazil then had a population of over 22 million, and was experiencing increasingly strong trade with America and European powers, including Britain, France and Germany. The map was published by Justus Perthes of Gotha, Germany, one of Europe’s most esteemed cartographic houses, founded in 1785. It was a special commission for the Hamburg-based arms dealer ARP & Co. (their advertisement takes up the lower right corner of the map). The firm was a major weapons supplier to Brazil, as well as other South American countries in the years leading up to the war, maintaining a large office in Rio de Janeiro. A Note on Rarity - ARP & Co. likely commissioned only a small print run of the map from Perthes, to be exclusively used by ARP’s agents as gifts and promotional devices intended for their clients and key contacts in Brazil and, as such, was likely never offered or public sale. The map is extremely rare, we can trace only a single institutional, at the Bibliothèque nationale de France; while we cannot trace any sales records for the map going back 30 years.       Sevastopol: tip. N.A. Kovaleva, 1910. [3], 60 pp.: diagr. 22,5x16,5 cm. In original wrappers. Lacking back wrapper and spine, loose, tears and owner's signature on the front wrapper, foxing and stains on the title page with small holes on the margin. First and only Russian translation (original was published in French in 1909). Very rare. Stefan Drzewiecki (1844-1938) was a Polish scientist, engineer, constructor and inventor, working in France and the Russian Empire. Drzewiecki distinguished himself mainly in aviation and ship building. In 1887 published the book 'Aeroplanes in Nature', in which he presented a thesis that the principle of monoplane aeroplanes should be used on devices that are heavier than air. This sort of opinion was considered revolutionary at that time and people were very reserved in accepting it. The general opinion was that flying devices could only stay up in the air by using the principle of oscillating aeroplane or helicopter. His theoretical reflections on the flight of insects were used for calculating propeller constructions. It was the first practical method of planning and brought him worldwide fame. As a result of his many years of work on theories of propeller construction, he published the book "Les hélices aériennes" in 1909. In this book formulated a theory of similarity and propeller optimization based on individual plane characteristics. His ideas were used by the French company Ratmanoff for producing Normale propellers, which, due to their great effectiveness and number of rotations (3000 turns per minute), became a big hit. In France in 1909 Drzewiecki patented the draft of a self-stabilising aeroplane. His prototype, Canard, was equipped with a pressure propeller and an automatic stabilisation device and was presented at an international airshow in Paris. War prevented any further improvements of this aeroplane. No copies in Worldcat.

Wirkung von Ballongranaten, erschossen in Meppen. (A.K.P. IVa. Nr. 172). [Ballon-Abwehr-Kanonen].

Essen, Fried. Krupp Aktiengesellschaft, (1910).. Four parts. Quarto. Pp. (2) main title-page, (1), plus 9 plates; (1), plus one plate; (1) plus 3 plates; (1), plus 5 plates. Total of 24 photographic illustrations. Loose as issued in original printed wrappers bit edge frayed, shelf ticket, old military institutional stamps, contemporary inscription on cover. In a very good condition. ~ First edition. Extremely rare. Inscription in neat contemporary hand at top of cover gives evidence to the fact that this publication was received from the representative of Krupps A.G., the retired Colonel DeFremery (?), on December 14, 1910, by the Commissie van Proefneming, responsible for testing, examining, and recommending artillery material for the Dutch government. With the Commission stamp next to it. The catalogue depicts in excellent photographs the 6.5cm L/35 towed anti-balloon gun, in rest and in full elevation, loaded on onto specially designed gun carrier with built-in folding metal steel ramps; the 7.1cm L/30, wagon-mounted with ammunition storage; and the giant 10.5cm L/35 central-pivot, fixed installation gun in various positions in a series of exquisite studio photographs. Special, extended part is dedicated to a photographic report on the effect of balloon grenades in proof-firing in Meppen. The history of the Ballonabwehrkanone ("Bak") is short and remarkable. At the siege of Paris in 1870/71 the Prussian Army practically failed to engage enemy balloons using conventional artillery which could not be aimed accurately at such high angle. There was a need in a special gun, specifically designed for the purpose, and the Krupp arms manufacturers accepted the challenge. The result were a 6.5cm L/35 gun on wheels and a 7.1cm L/30 car-mounted which could be elevated to fire directly overhead. This was the world's first anti-aircraft gun, a beginning of a field in which Krupp would dominate right into WW II. At the eve of the First World War only a handful guns in the whole German Army were designated as anti-balloon weapons. Almost all were horse-drawn guns that were assigned to protect strategically important locations along the axis of advance in the West. After the outbreak of the war individual weapons were consolidated into sections, and then into platoons and batteries. But few Allied dirigible balloons took to the skies over the front, and in 1916 the "Bak" was renamed "Flak" to represent its new role as anti-aircraft gun. ~ See also: M.
