        THE TALE OF MRS. TITTLEMOUSE

1910. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1910. Original blue-grey paper-covered boards with hexagonal pictorial onlay. First Edition of Beatrix Potter's tale about a wood-mouse named Thomasina Tittlemouse. The tale tells of her attempts to keep her underground home neat and tidy in spite of various unexpected visitors ("friends" they were called in the manuscript: this was changed to "visitors" in the book, but even more appropriate would be "intruders"). These include bees, a beetle, a ladybug, a butterfly, a spider and of course the debonair toad Mr. Jackson. The manuscript also included three wood-lice, but Warne objected that such creatures did not belong in a children's book; so they are instead described as "three creepy-crawly people" in the book.~There were actually two printings during (and dated) 1910, but they are identical; the third was not until 1911. Customers were given the choice of buying MRS. TITTLEMOUSE in blue-grey or cream paper-covered boards priced at 1/-, or in decorated cloth priced at 1/6. For this title the pictorial paste-down endpapers were revised to their present-day design, showing Mrs. Tittlemouse and a bee in the upper right corner of each paste-down.~This is a fine, attractive copy, with scarcely any wear at all (spine very slightly darkened). Linder pp 205-207 and p. 429; Quinby 18.

Ganz überwiegend in tadelloser Erhaltung.

Original glass plate photograph, Honovi - Walpi Snake Priest, prepared by Curtis for the printing of The North American Indian

This is a splendid original glass plate made for Curtis's The North American Indian, the greatest photographic work on Native Americans. This portrait, titled Honovi - Walpi Snake Priest, with Totokya Day Painting, was published as a photogravure in The North American Indian, volume 12, plate 408, c.1910 Approx. 14 x 17 inches. Accompanied by a custom wall-mount light box. Excellent condition. A stunning display piece. "Take a good look. We're not going to see this kind of thing much longer. It already belongs to the past." - George Bird Grinnell to Edward Curtis, 1900 Edward Curtis was one of the most important American artists of the nineteenth century and the most celebrated photographer of North American Indians. Over the course of thirty-five years, Curtis took tens of thousands of photographs of Indians from more than eighty tribes. "Never before have we seen the Indians of North America so close to the origins of their humanity, their sense of themselves in the world, their innate dignity and self-possession" (N. Scott Momaday). Curtis's photographs are "an absolutely unmatched masterpiece of visual anthropology, and one of the most thorough, extensive and profound photograph works of all time" (A. D. Coleman). Curtis printed 2200 of his images as photogravures in his magisterial The North American Indian , which was hailed as "the most gigantic undertaking in the making of books since the King James Bible" (New York Herald). These photogravures were printed from large-format photographic glass plates, the vast majority of which were subsequently destroyed. Curtis devoted the twelfth volume of The North American Indian to the Hopi. He wrote of this photograph of Honovi, "This plate depicts the accoutrement of a Snake dancer on the day of the Antelope dance (see Volume XII, pages 146-149). The right hand grasps a pair of eagle-feathers - the 'snake whip' - and the left a bag of ceremonial meal. Honovi was one of the author's principal informants." Curtis's lifelong project was inspired by his reflection that "The passing of every old man or woman means the passage of some tradition, some knowledge of sacred rite possessed by no other; consequently, the information that is to be gathered, for the benefit of future generations, respecting the modes of life of one of the greatest races of mankind, must be collected at once or the opportunity will be lost for all time." The present stunning example is one of the very few glass plate photographs that have survived. The image contains a wealth of detail that was lost in the photogravure process, and when shown in the accompanying lightbox, it is a dazzling photographic masterpiece. This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the greatest monuments of photography in one of its rarest and most important forms.

        Ave Atque Vale

image 19 x 13 cms., overall 31 x 21cms. n.d.[1910?], n.p. [London?] - On heavy wove paper, a later print of the drawing which accompanied Beardsley's translation of Catallus in The Savoy, Number 7, September 1896, lacking the inscription "Ave Atque Vale" ["Hail and Farewell"] of the published version. In light of the foregoing, the caption below the image: "Unpublished drawing in pen and ink by Aubrey Beardsley in the possession of Edward J. Shaw, Esq., J.P. Size, 6 3/4 x 5 In." is surprising. Shaw - a successful Walsall ironmonger - was a collector of drawings and donated various items to museums and galleries. Slightly dusty but in excellent condition.

BRAZIL: MAPPA DO BRAZIL, BASEADO NO MAPPA DA AMERICA DO SUL DE STIELER.

Gotha (Germany): Justus Perthes, []. 1910 - Chromolithograph, dissected into 54 sections and mounted upon original linen, folding into contemporary green cloth slipcase bearing title label (Very Good, map clean and bright; slipcase quite worn with some restoration), 105 x 86 cm (41.5 x 34 inches). Extremely rare - a monumental, resplendently coloured map of Brazil, issued shortly before WWI as a promotional piece for ARP & Co., a Hamburg arms dealer and major supplier to the Brazilian Military, published by the venerable firm of Justus Perthes of Gotha. This extremely rare and resplendently colourful, monumental map of Brazil was made as a promotional piece by the German arms dealer ARP & Co. of Hamburg, which maintained extensive business interests in Brazil in the years leading up to World War I. The map distinguishes each of Brazil’s states and territories in their own bright hue, and covers all aspects of human and natural geography in great detail. The ‘Convençãos’, below the title, upper right, identifies symbols for dozens of different features, including the locations of forts, lighthouses, reefs and ruins; as well as symbols distinguishing cities and towns of various sizes. The map also delineates Brazil’s extensive (and constantly growing) railway system, nothing completed lines in bold red, while lines under construction appear as intermittent red lines. It also delineates telegraph lines and major shipping routes. As noted in the title, the map is based on Adolf Steiler’s highly exact map of South America, and shows that, by this time, all of Brazil’s international boundaries had been settled, including the once nettlesome border between Brazil and British Guyana, which was ratified in 1904. In all, the map gives the impression of rapidly industrializing nation, then enjoying an economic boom in the advance of World War I. Brazil then had a population of over 22 million, and was experiencing increasingly strong trade with America and European powers, including Britain, France and Germany. The map was published by Justus Perthes of Gotha, Germany, one of Europe’s most esteemed cartographic houses, founded in 1785. It was a special commission for the Hamburg-based arms dealer ARP & Co. (their advertisement takes up the lower right corner of the map). The firm was a major weapons supplier to Brazil, as well as other South American countries in the years leading up to the war, maintaining a large office in Rio de Janeiro. A Note on Rarity - ARP & Co. likely commissioned only a small print run of the map from Perthes, to be exclusively used by ARP’s agents as gifts and promotional devices intended for their clients and key contacts in Brazil and, as such, was likely never offered or public sale. The map is extremely rare, we can trace only a single institutional, at the Bibliothèque nationale de France; while we cannot trace any sales records for the map going back 30 years.
