Rare unsigned Cabinet photo by Ch. Bergamasco, (Grand Duke, 1860-1919, 6th son and youngest child of Tsar Alexander II and Maria Alexandrovna, General, executed in the Revolution)]

1910 - showing him head and shoulders in an oval, as a young man, 6½" x 4½", no place, no date but circa After the Bolsheviks seized power, he and his family faced a terrible ordeal. Their properties were confiscated, they lived under constant harassment, and in March 1918 his son Vladimir Paley was exiled to the Urals, where he was executed on 18 July 1918 in a mineshaft near Alapayevsk. In August 1918, he was arrested and taken to prison in St. Petersburg. His health, already bad, declined sharply, and his wife did all she could to have him released. Her efforts were useless: on 29 January 1919, Paul was moved to St. Peter and St. Paul Fortress, and in the first hours of the following day he was shot there, along with his cousins Grand Dukes Dimitry Konstantinovich, Nikolay Mikhailovich and Georgy Mikhailovich. They were buried in a mass grave in the Fortress, the Bolsheviks having refused the distraught Princess Paley the right to bury her husband. His body and those of his three cousins were found in 2011.

RARE British Antarctic Expedition Signed SLEDGING TABLES owned by Charles 'Silas' Wright scientist on Scott's Terra Nova Expedition 1910-13

Extremely rare association item... 1910 small quarto 170 x123 mm Contents page, 130pp of 18 printed tables (inc. correction of mean refraction depending upon reading of barometer, log sines of small arcs to each second, table for computing the reduction to the Meridian in seconds) and 20 pp blank for notes. One small photograph of tables for the sun's position in February 1912, in pocket at rear (possibly lacking two folding tables in pocket). Contemporary blue cloth with gilt title to front cover. Marks to front cover and edges a little worn. Binding fairly firm. The Sledging Tables were specially printed for the BAE reproducing relevant tables for making navigational calculations on sledging journeys. They were probably produced by a high street printer (as no publisher credited) in very small numbers for those expected to lead expeditions. This set includes a few notes on the tables presumably made by Wright; his stamped signature twice and, on the front paste down, the start of a letter from him 'Dear Mrs Armstrong' crossed out. The ffep has been torn out, and the name of collector Frank Morrison 1985 written on the contents page.

        African Game Trails.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1910. An account of the African wanderings of an American hunter-naturalist. 2 volumes, large octavo. Original brown half pigskin, pale grey-brown sides, untrimmed. With the dust jackets, card chemises and original slipcase. Photogravure portrait frontispiece, 47 photogravure plates (8 of them from drawings by the great wildlife artist Philip R. Goodwin, the rest "from photographs by Kermit Roosevelt and other members of the expedition"), all with captioned tissue guards; title pages printed in red & black. Contemporary presentation inscription on front free endpaper of volume I, light tan-burn from the corners to the endpapers, slipcase and chemises with splits now professionally restored, some staining and minor stripping from old tape repairs, however overall a remarkably well-preserved set of this handsome production. First and limited edition, number 129 of 500 copies signed by the author, printed on Ruisdael Paper by the De Vinne Press. Absenting himself from politics for a year, Roosevelt set off on an elaborate hunting trip to gather specimens for the Smithsonian. The huge party, including over 250 porters and guides, was partly underwritten by Scribner's who gave Roosevelt a $50,000 commission for a series of 12 articles on the safari which form the basis of this book. The party crossed British East Africa, into the Belgian Congo, and traced the Nile across the Sudan to Khartoum. "Lavishly illustrated, African Game Trails was irresistible to readers who could stomach the meticulous descriptions of bullets drilling hearts and brains. Even those who could not... had to concede that Roosevelt was scientific in his scrutiny of every aspect of the African wilderness, and often movingly lyrical. The density of recorded details, whether ornithological, paleontological, botanical, or anthropological, was almost overwhelming. Most came not from notes, but from the author's movie-camera memory, which in advance of any system yet available in nickelodeons, registered both sight and sound. Over and above its documentary appeal, the book exuded a kind of savage romance new to American readers" (Edmund Morris, Colonel Roosevelt, 2010). Sets in such collectable condition and with the surviving chemises and slipcase are most uncommon.

Signed drawing on hand cut slightly uneven 12 mo card stock, about 3 x 4, of Krazy Kat looking from left margin at Ignatz reading. Herriman signed diagonally across the center

Archivally framed and matted in thin dark mahogany toned wooden frame with French matting of a tone similar to cartoon. In 1910, Herriman launched "The Dingbat Family," later renamed "The Family Upstairs," for The New York Evening Journal, a Hearst paper. An interesting side note is that Herriman is credited with creating the word, "dingbat." The strip featured the adventures of an ordinary family dealing with their annoying upstairs neighbors. Herriman was the first to use the word "dingbat" to indicate a silly, empty-headed person. [see http://www.georgeherriman.com/biography.html] Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse began as space fillers for The Family Upstairs then expanded into their own comic strip. King Feature Syndicate owned by William Randolph Hearst supported Herriman's art throughout his career. Herriman's comics did not enjoy a mass following, but they were popular among an artistic and intellectual set [http://www.georgeherriman.com/biography.html].

The poet Simánek (1883–1959) was a member of the hermeticist group Universalia and the symbolist movement Sursum, both of which were heavily influenced by occult theosophical and occult interests. Though a major Czech modernist writer, and considered by some a pioneer of Czech science fiction, Šimánek is today largely neglected. An important collaboration between poet and artist, combining attractive typography with Váchal’s evocative and exotic color woodcuts. This is copy 179 of only 260 numbered copies. The colophon notes that “no new editions of this book will ever be printed,” suggesting that Váchal’s printing blocks were to be destroyed after its production. Sánka 131. KVK, OCLC show the copies at the Austrian National Library, Penn State, and University of Illinois. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[ARCHIVE OF MANUSCRIPT NOTES, TRANSLATIONS, AND WRITINGS OF L. BRADFORD PRINCE, MANY OF WHICH PERTAIN TO NEW MEXICO AND ITS HISTORY]

[Various places, but primarily New Mexico, 1910. Approximately [290]pp. Quarto and folio sheets. Some wear and light soiling, but generally very good. An extensive archive of manuscript notes and translations of Spanish colonial documents, written by L. Bradford Prince. A native of New York State, Prince (1840-1922) served as Chief Justice of New Mexico from 1878 to 1882 and was later appointed Territorial Governor, serving from 1889 to 1893. During his term in office Prince endeavored to bring about statehood for the territory, but was unsuccessful. He also wroted several works on the history of New Mexico, and served as president of the Historical Society of New Mexico from 1883 to his death some forty years later. Nearly half the archive consists of translations of early New Mexico documents, translated from the Spanish by Prince. Much of this work may have been done for research on his books about the history of New Mexico, or as part of his tenure at the Historical Society. Additionally, there are a dozen pages of notes on the Spanish occupation of New Mexico, likely translated, and a sixteen-page narrative of the expedition into New Mexico by Antonio Espejo in the 1580s, including the account of Father Beltran. The archive also includes works on the local Indian tribes, such as a description of "The Annual Festival at Isleta," a harvest dance performed at that pueblo, and several other descriptions of native dances and ceremonies. Thirty-one pages of the archive contain a revision of a printed text on the expedition of Cabeça de Vaca. The printed text has been cut into segments and pasted to sheets, with manuscript notes and revisions surrounding each section. The remainder of the papers are primarily concerned with New Mexico history. A remarkable trove of New Mexican history documents, written and translated by an important early historian.

Schachmeister Steinitz. Ein Lebensbild des ersten Weltschachmeisters dargestellt in einer vollstandigen Sammlung seiner Partien

Ansbach: Druck und Verlag von C Brugel & Sohn, 1910-1921. 4 volumes: 1859-1877: xiv+418 pages with frontispiece, diagrams and tables; 1878-1883: 232+[ii ad] pages with frontispiece, diagrams and tables; 1884-1893: viii+482+[vi ad] pages with frontispiece and diagrams; 1894-1900: xviii+391+[iv ad] pages with frontispiece, diagrams and table. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/4") bound in beige cloth with original covers laid on. [Biblioteca van Der Niemeijeriana:3131] First edition.Wilhelm (later William) Steinitz (May 17, 1836 – August 12, 1900) was an Austrian-American chess player and the first undisputed world chess champion from 1886 to 1894. Some contemporaries and later writers described him as world champion since 1866, when he won a match against Adolf Anderssen. Steinitz lost his title to Emanuel Lasker in 1894 and also lost a re-match in 1897. Statistical rating systems give Steinitz a rather low ranking among world champions, mainly because he took several long breaks from competitive play. However, an analysis based on one of these rating systems shows that he was one of the most dominant players in the history of the game. Although Steinitz became "world number one" by winning in the all-out attacking style that was common in the 1860s, he unveiled in 1873 a new positional style of play and demonstrated that it was superior to the old style. His new style was controversial and some even branded it as "cowardly", but many of Steinitz's games showed that it could also provide a platform for attacks as ferocious as those of the old school. Steinitz was also a prolific writer on chess, and defended his new ideas vigorously. The debate was so bitter and sometimes abusive that it became known as the "Ink War". By the early 1890s, Steinitz' approach was widely accepted and the next generation of top players acknowledged their debt to him, most notably his successor as world champion, Emanuel Lasker. As a result of the "Ink War", traditional accounts of Steinitz' character depict him as ill-tempered and aggressive; but more recent research shows that he had long and friendly relationships with some players and chess organizations. Most notably from 1888 to 1889 he co-operated with the American Chess Congress in a project to define rules for the future conduct of contests for the world championship title that he held. Steinitz was unskilled at managing money and lived in poverty all his life.Condition:Rebound in beige cloth with new end papers and original paste-board cover laid on front cover. Volume 3, 1884-1893, with Studenterforeningens Skakklub stamped on title verso, some pencil markings to titles else a very good set of an extremely difficult first edition biography to obtain.

On the Determination of the Tension of a recently formed Water-Surface.

[London: Harrison and Sons], 1910. Presentation offprint, inscribed in Bohr's hand to the chemist Einar Biilmann, of the 'Second Royal Society Paper' - what Bohr "learned by working in this field may have been a help to him when, more than a quarter of a century later, he showed that some of the properties of atomic nuclei can be understood by comparing them to liquid drops [i.e., Bohr's liquid-drop model]." (J. Rud Nielsen). In February 1905 the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters announced a prize concerning Lord Rayleigh's 1879 theory that the surface tension of liquids could be determined from the surface vibrations of liquid jets. The problem proposed by the Academy was to perform quantitative experiments to implement Rayleigh's method. Bohr faced formidable difficulties, not least the fact that, since the university had no physics laboratory, Bohr had to perform the experiments at night (to avoid perturbations due to passing traffic) in his father's physiology laboratory. Bohr's paper was submitted on the deadline of 30 October 1906, and on 23 February 1907 the Academy notified Bohr that he had won its gold medal. "After receiving the gold medal, Bohr carried out additional measurements of the surface tension of water. At the same time he was occupied with the considerable task of preparing his work for publication. In the latter part of 1908 he submitted a paper entitled'Determination of the Surface-Tension of Water by the Method of Jet Vibration' to the Royal Society of London. This paper is not a simple translation of the prize essay but deviates from the latter at a number of points... "In 1910, while Bohr was working on his doctor's dissertation, a paper was published by P. Lenard, in which he claimed that a recently formed water surface has a high surface tension which rapidly decreases. Lenard stated that this was in agreement with Bohr's results. This led Bohr to re-examine the matter and, in particular, to test by new calculations the claim made by Lenard that a variation of the velocity over the different concentric parts of a jet will prolong the periods of vibration and increase the wavelengths of surface waves on the jet. He made a direct calculation of the wavelength when the velocity in the jet varies with the distance from the axis and concluded that his experiments do not support the claims made by Lenard. In August, 1910, he submitted to the Royal Society a paper entitled 'On the Determination of the Tension in a recently formed Water- Surface [i.e, the offered paper], which was published in its Proceedings. This was Bohr's last work on surface tension. The results of this paper, and the merit of the experimental method described, have apparently been appreciated by most later workers in the field. Thus, N. K. Adam writes in his book The physics and chemistry of surfaces... 'Bohr's work on oscillating jets is probably the best of any dynamic methods.' "What he learned by working in this field may have been a help to him when, more than a quarter of a century later, he showed that some of the properties of atomic nuclei can be understood by comparing them to liquid drops [i.e., Bohr's liquid-drop model]." (J. Rud Nielsen, Collected Works, pp. 8-12). Large 8vo (254 x 176 mm), offprint from the Proceedings of the Royal Society, A, Vol. 84, 1910, pp. [395] 396-403 [404:blank], original light brown printed wrappers, inscribed in Bohr's hand to the upper right corner of front wrapper: 'Hr Professor E. Biilmann / ærbødisgst fra Forf.' (i.e., Mr. Professor E. Biilmann / respectfully from the author), Prof. Einar Biilmann (1873-1946) was a Danish chemist and early friend of Bohr, number in blue pencil to upper right corner of front wrapper (probably a library numbering from Biilmann).

        Revolution and Other Essays

ix+309+[iv ads] pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2"). bound in original publisher's burgundy cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover with the preferred "THE MACMILLAN COMPANY" on spine. 2,130 copies printed. (BAL 11916) (Sisson & Martens 46) First edition. A collection of 13 essays written between 1900 and 1908, published in 1910. The lead essay, "Revolution", outlines how and why London renounced capitalism as a failed social system and declared himself an active participant in the "socialist revolution", the last essay is an autobiographical piece, and the essays in between are on diverse subjects. A few of the "essays" are actually humorous short fiction stories; others are serious, sometimes angry rants against capitalistic greed and political corruption. All of the pieces are thought-provoking and excellently written, though only loosely intellectual, highly opinionated, and rife with contradiction, as was London himself.Condition:Corners gently bumped, spine ends and corners moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper. A better than very good copy lacking dust jacket.[removed][removed]
