After his service in the Civi War, Charles Follens Adams (1842 -1918) began writing humorous verse for magazines and periodicals. His "Leedle Yawcob Strauss" was written in 1876, and first published in book form in LEEDLE YAWCOB STRAUSS, AND OTHER POEMS in 1877. It was a popular favorite in the burgeoning tradition of dialect humor, and the pre-eminent example of that genre in the dialect of German immigrants.A rarely seen autograph transcription.

        Totemism and Exogamy; A Treatise on Certain Early Forms of Superstition and Society / in four volumes

Maps. 4 volumes, Royal 8vos (9" x 6 1/4"), dark green original publisher's cloth with gold stamping on spine (faded), a few scattered tables plus 8 full-color folding maps in Vol. IV; Vol. I: xix + 579pp.; Vol. II: vii + 640pp.; Vol. III: vii + 583pp.; Vol. IV: [vi] + 379pp., or 2,181 numbered principal pages. The brilliant and highly accomplished Scottish-born author, later "Sir" James George Frazer (1854-1941; knighted in 1914)--more famous for The Golden Bough--wrote in these volumes the first comprehensive study of totemism and its relationship to exogamy. Several of his articles here collected originally appeared in The Fortnightly Review. Frazer defined totemism as "an intimate relation which is supposed to exist between a group of kindred people on the one side and a species of natural or artificial objects on the other side, which objects are called the totem of the human should be added that the species of things which constitutes a totem is far oftener natural than artificial, and that amongst the natural species which are reckoned totems the great majority are either animals or plants." Furthermore, "We must constantly bear in mind that totemism is not a consistent philosophical system...." (Vol. IV: Summary and Conclusion, pp.3-4). Normally, an individual bears a relationship of "friendship and kinship" to his totem. Thus, "totemism is an identification of a man with his totem, whether his totem be an animal, a plant, or what not" (p.5). Nor did Frazer conclude that the totem a "god," but rather something given great reverence and respect. In this, he was challenged by Solomon Reinach, who found that totemism had a significant shaping influence on religion (see Orpheus). Similarly, Andrew Lang, the great Victorian folklorist, had issues over totemism's apparent lack of influence on early Semitic and Greek religion, though he found traces of it in Minoan beliefs that may have influenced the religion of ancient Greece. Psychoanalytic anthropologists have also posited relationships between "spirit children" and the spirit world that underlies many totemic practices and the "soul." Concerning "exogamy," or out-breeding from one's close biological and social kin, Frazer found that it was originally a social institution separate from totemism whose ultimate origin was unknown. But that it evolved to prevent marriages between near relations. Exogamy served to circumvent and avoid the [near] universal "incest taboo." So, too, kinship exogamy tended to become local exogamy. His and other studies, thus contributed significantly to a long-lasting flurry of kinship studies by anthropologists and sociologists, which--from my perspective--appear to have fizzled out with magnificent charts of marital and kinship relationships--among them, Claude Levi-Strauss and "structuralism"--but without adequate generalizations, repeatability, or verifiability. Be the above and subsequent challenges as they may, Frazer's pioneering and enormous work on the subjects of totemism and exogamy was magnificently compiled and indexed from missionary and scientifc studies conducted on all continents and many archipelagoes. For all its length and detail, Frazer also wrote with great clarity. Accordingly, his magisterial study had a huge impact on subsequent anthropological and sociological thinking. Overall, this is a FINE/NF set worthy of inclusion in the finest libraries. All folding maps are present and without flaws. All four volumes are tight with clean pages (very few have been opened a bit roughly so their edges are roughened but straight). All volumes have seriously faded gilt lettering on their spines; most have a few small bubbles beneath their cloth; and most have corners that are lightly bruised or a trifle bent. Vol. I has a bit of soil; a bump or two at the corners; a 3/8" minor tear of cloth at the upper joint of the spine. Vol. III has rubbing along the upper joint and a light scuff at mid-spine. Vol. IV has a couple of light scuff marks on the spine. This set is NOT ex-library. Its hinges, joints, and text blocs are sound. Volume I deals with Australian Aboriginal Totemism. Volume II covers the Torres Straits, New Guinea, Melanesia, Polynesia, India, & Africa. Volume III surveys Indians in the United States, Canada, and South America. Volume IV contains his "Summary and Conclusion" with a detailed Index and the folding maps. We do not include Totemica, a 5th volume that appeared later in 1937.

      Paris: Logerot, Pauly, and others, circa 1910. Six map puzzles, each measuring 330 x 240 mm., housed in the original colour printed card case. Geographical jigsaw puzzle set comprising six maps mounted and cut into parts corresponding to the colonial dominions of major European powers. This division of the world reflecting European territorial aspirations exemplifies the mood of the first decade of the twentieth century (a rivalry that, in good part, ultimately precipitated the outbreak of the First World War). Accordingly, this puzzle set has an interesting social history dimension as it tangibly demonstrates the overlap between colonialism and early childhood education.The map of Australasia and the Pacific is captioned Océanie dressée par M. Mrs. R. Cortambert et A. Vuillemin, and bears the imprint 'Logerot éditeur Quai des Augustins, 55'. It is a later printing of an engraved map of the same title published by Hachette in 1852. This lithographed version was prepared circa 1880, and includes a colour key dividing South-east Asia and the Pacific into the respective colonial dominions of England, France, Spain, the United States, Holland and Portugal. As depicted the Australian continent includes good detail of inland geographical features such as Mt. Stuart and Lake Eyre, and the Hammersley Ranges in Western Australia.The other five maps in the series are later publications, printed circa 1910, and are contemporaneous with the striking presentation case. They include a double hemisphere world map and the remaining four continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. The front board of the presentation case is itself a fine example of period design, with five beauties respectively symbolising each continent amidst a cornucopia of regionally specific natural products and commodities. The borders are ornamented with fauna of each of the continents and Australian animals include the kangaroo, emu, lyrebird, wombat, possum, thylacine and a gang of cockatoos. A little wear to extremities of the card case, puzzles in excellent condition.

[77]pp., with approximately 260 mounted photographs, mostly silver gelatin prints measuring 3 x 4 inches, but with some larger format photographs measuring approximately 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, five printed in color. Oblong folio leatherette album, gilt title on front cover, remnants of custom paper label on spine. Minor edge wear. Some silvering to the edges of some photographs, and minor fading to some annotations. Overall very good. A fantastic and absorbing vernacular photographic record from Margaret A. Shepard of Brookline, Ma., with her contemporary annotations, of a trip she took to the western United States, Alaska, and Canada in the summer of 1910. A faint manuscript title on the inside front cover reads, "My trip to the - Great Lakes, Yellowstone Park, Alaska, Canadian Rockies July 8th '10 - Aug. 17th '10 Margaret A. Shepard, 205 Garden Rd., Brookline Mass." A significant amount of the album is comprised of photographs of Yellowstone Park, with numerous landscape shots depicting the majesty of the surroundings. Shepard visited Jupiter Terrace, Swan Lake, the Upper Geyser Basin (where she apparently stayed at the Old Faithful Inn and saw numerous geysers, including Old Faithful, Pearl, Riverside, and Devil's Kitchen), Yellowstone Lake, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, all of which are featured in the album and annotated in her handwriting. The larger photographs of geysers, including Old Faithful, Great Fountain Geyser, and Grotto Geyser are possibly professional prints she bought in the park; the larger color photographs are certainly souvenir prints, and copyrighted between 1902 and 1906. From Yellowstone, Shepard traveled to Victoria, Vancouver Island, where she takes a steamer to Killisnoo, Alaska. Shepard includes numerous shots of the Killisnoo community, including a dozen photographs of the native Tlingit people. She then moves to Sitka (where she photographs a number of totem poles), Glacier Bay, Skagway (where someone from her party bottle-feeds a bear cub), White Pass (where she and her party move past a mining camp), the Treadwell Gold Mine, Juneau, Wrangell, and Metlakatla, before heading back to Vancouver. In Vancouver, the group visits the giant trees in Stanley Park and stays at Glencoe Lodge before moving inland to the Canadian Rockies. They stop first at Sicamous Junction, then proceed to Lake Louise (where Shepard includes a few more images of indigenous peoples) and Illegillewaet Valley, where the album concludes. Accompanying the album is a pair of child's mucklucks, soft boots traditionally made of reindeer or seal skin and worn by the indigenous peoples of the Arctic region. A handwritten label tucked inside one of the boots reads, "Mucklucks made by an Aleute Indian woman at Unalaska Alaska." A compelling collection of photographs from a Massachusetts woman traveling the great white north in the early 20th century, with a keen eye for landscape and composition in her images.

Front and back panels of wraps detached but present, with the paper covering the spine mostly perished. Marginal annotations in pencil throughout. The second edition of this privately published and circulated utopian proposal to create an organized intelligentsia and foster human creativity against capitalism. Published around Whitsun in Prague, it includes reactions from readers who had received the first version of the text. A third, publicly published edition would follow later this same year. The work was written by Viktor Hueber, a former Austrian captain who became a member of the circle which published the short-lived magazine Der Anfang, in which Benjamin published his first poems and essays. Hueber was later associated with Franz Pfemfert's better known periodical Die Aktion, and early issues of the magazine bore the subtitle "Publikationsorgan der Organization der Intelligenz", a reference to this work, though subsequent efforts to create an actual organization based on the book's principles failed due to infighting [Portner, p. 140]. Benjamin discusses the book in a September 15, 1913 letter to Carla Seligsohn, the first person he'd met who had also read the book. "Those of us who understand Hueber feel our youth complete only in the presence of his ideas- the others, who feel noth- ing, are not young. They have simply never been young. They took pleasure in their youth only when it was over, just a memory. They did not know the great joy of its presence, which we are now feeling and which I sense in your words ... But in every individual who is born, no matter where, and turns out to be young, there is, not 'improvement,' but perfection from the very start. This is the goal that Heuber so messianically feels is near ... " McCole, analyzing this same letter, notes that this appears to be Benjamin's first use of the term "Messianic" in his writings [McCole, p. 61]. The idea would haunt Benjamin's subsequent works on history, and reach its conclusion in the second thesis in On the Concept of History, written just before his march into the mountains. "The past carries with it a secret index, by which it is referred to its resurrection. There is an agreement and an appointment between us and the generations of the past. For we have been expected upon this earth. Like the generations before us, we have been given a weak messianic power, which the past can lay claim to. This claim is not to be settled lightly. The historical materialist knows why." Rare. OCLC locates only two holdings, and none in North America. The preceding edition is not located in OCLC.

      Brussels. Paper folder. Very Good Plus. N.d., circa 1910. 36 by 22 cm. Folio of eight pochoir illustrations, all depicting elegantly appointed women decked in furs. The women are all on the move or active in some way -- these are illustrations meant to show how the garments work in their lifestyle. There is nothing static about the pictures. They bring to mind the breezy boulevard depictions of artists such as Sem, with the difference that these portraits aren't caricatures. The fashions hark from a period in which beauty and elegance was the hallmark of high fashion while some of the shackles imposed by fashion were being loosened -- women could go out in the world on their own to a degree seldom the case a generation earlier. Jean Droit was a French and Belgian artist and writer who excelled at book illustration. He is better known for his depictions of wartime and warfare, and he incidentally played an instrumental role in the scouting movement. This collection, produced early in his prolific career, is scarce -- we have been able to locate no other copies -- and each of the plates would be very appealing matted, framed and hung on a wall.

Foster, "The Buckeye Detective," was a private detective who was enlisted by the Columbus, Ohio Police Department. Shaw wrote Trails in Shadow Land as a chronicle of Foster's most intriguing cases.Nicholas B. Harris,1882-1943, investigative reporter turned police detective, is considered a legend within the private investigation world. Originally a reporter for the LA Times he was asked to join the Los Angeles County Police Department by the then captain, A.J. Bradish. In 1906 he founded Nick Harris Detectives followed shortly thereafter by the Nick Harris Professional Detective School. His exploits were so popular that from 1934 to 1940 a radio program produced stories based on his cases sometimes referred to as Nick Harris Detective or Why Crime Doesn't Pay, which was as popular as Sherlock Holmes at the time. .

      Using his birth name, William Henry Pratt, Karloff assigns his life insurance policy as collateral. "For Value Received the undersigned hereby assign, transfer and set over to Citizens National Trust & Savings in Hollywood, 2g California...." "William Henry Pratt (known as Boris Karloff) of Beverly Hills, California...agrees to the conditions and revisions herein set forth...." On the lower portion of the page after all terms are articulated, Karloff signs, "William Henry Pratt. Known as Boris Karloff," above the words identifying "Insured or Owner." Karloff emigrated to Canada in the early 1910's and began an acting career. It is at this time that Pratt became Boris Karloff though he never legally changed his name typically using the his stage and birth names in the manner found in or document. He was also a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild.

      1910. Signed. DUNBAR, Paul Laurence. Typed poem signed. No place, circa 1900. One sheet, 8-1/2 by 11 inches. $2600.Typed poem in dialect signed by Paul Laurence Dunbar. Apparently a printerÂ’s or publisherÂ’s copy.Frederick Douglass called Dunbar, the first African-American literary figure to achieve national prominence, “one of the sweetest songsters his race has produced and a man of whom I hope great things.” Dunbar was particularly noted for writing his poetry in both classical English and in African-American dialect. There are several autograph changes to the poem, likely written by Dunbar, and the word “accept” is written above the poem. The first of three stanzas of the poem reads: “FuÂ’ de peace oÂ’ my eachinÂ’ heels, set down, / donÂ’ fiddle dat chune no moÂ’. / DonÂ’ you see how dat melody stuhs me up? / AnÂ’ baigs me to tek to de floÂ’?/ You knows IÂ’s a Christian, good anÂ’ strong: / I wusship fÂ’om June to June; / My praÂ’ahs dey ah loud anÂ’ my hymns ah long; / I baig you donÂ’ fiddle dat chune.” The poem concludes with DunbarÂ’s signature. It appears this was a copy submitted to a publisher. Light rubbing with some loss to extremities of paper. One rub to poem. A wonderful, extremely good copy.

      3 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated Venice, July 29, 1910, Tolentini 3536. On onionskin paper with blindstamp of a quill on paper to lower edges. In Italian (with translation). Wolf-Ferrari asks his correspondent to send him some scores as soon as possible so he can study them "lovingly" rather than superficially. "I had already sent my Venice address to Via dei Greci, Rome, and from there they had already answered me, telling me that they would have sent the scores just as soon as [Arturo] Toscanini had released them...The scores are really a lot. They should get to me right away so I can prepare with ease... I will need at least twenty days so that the examination would not be too superficial, but rather, loving." Creased at folds; short tear to central fold; last blank page slightly stained at lower right. Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) was an Italian composer best known for his operas Cenerentola, Le donne curiose, and I Gioielli della Madonna, among others.The present letter may concern the score of I Gioielli, which premiered at the Berlin Kurfürstenoper on December 23, 1911.

Octavo, original light blue cloth, illustrated with 16 color plates with metallic green ink and numerous black & white drawings by John R. Neill. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket with some light rubbing and wear. The last jacketed copy brought $15,600 at auction. Leaving their financial troubles behind, Dorothy Gale, Uncle Henry and Aunty Em move to Oz. As they tour the magical land on their way to the Emerald City, Dorothy and her family visit never-before seen strange and wonderful parts of Oz, including a city of paper dolls, a city of jigsaw people, and a city of bunnies. Meanwhile, the wicked Nome king plots to conquer Oz and enslave its people, and prepares to invade the Emerald City just as Dorothy and her family arrive. Baum intended to conclude his popular series with this volume. By the tale's end, the sorceress Glinda has made the fairyland invisible to the outside world, and Dorothy and her aunt and uncle, facing eviction from their Kansas farm, have settled in the Emerald City to stay. Baum's own bankruptcy the next year, however, would mean he "had no choice but to call once more upon the magic of Oz in an attempt to restore his fortunes" (Eyles, 48).

Shaw wrote Trails in Shadow Land as a chronicle of Foster's most intriguing cases.Nicholas B. Harris,1882-1943, investigative reporter turned police detective, is considered a legend within the private investigation world. Originally a reporter for the LA Times he was asked to join the Los Angeles County Police Department by the then captain, A.J. Bradish. In 1906 he founded Nick Harris Detectives followed shortly thereafter by the Nick Harris Professional Detective School. His exploits were so popular that from 1934 to 1940 a radio program produced stories based on his cases sometimes referred to as Nick Harris Detective or Why Crime Doesn't Pay, which was as popular as Sherlock Holmes at the time. .

      1910 - The photograph album of commemorating the Japan-British Exhibition of 1910, along with the family's photographs of a trip to Japan. The exhibition took place at White City, London in Great Britain from 14 May 1910 to 29 October 1910. It was the largest international exposition that the Empire of Japan had ever participated in and was driven by a desire of Japan to develop a more favorable public image in Great Britain. The album opens with a shipboard printed telegram, "The Tenyo Maru Wireless Telegram" dated May 8, 1910, announcing that King Edward had died on May 6th and the English were mourning and in a state of confusion. As such, the opening of the Anglo-Japanese Exhibition was "postponed for about one week. The banquet of Prince Asaka is also postponed." There follows a series of hand painted photographs approx. 6 x 2.5". There are colored postcards, art postcards, And a trip to Japan,3 watercolor views, a menu, autographs Approximately 30 b&w photographs of the family on their visit to Japan. The album also includes Invitations, 3 watercolor views, a menu, calling cards from Lady Semon and family, place cards for Mr. & Mrs. Rutherfurd (possibly the owners of the album). Mr. Rutherfurd is a massively tall and heavy fellow, especially alongside the Japanese. A letter from Harishin, collector of Fine Art Curios of Kobe, dated April 2nd, 1910, about lamps the gentleman liked. A large folding image & calligraphy on tissue with the original envelope at the back. Oblong 8vo, 25 card leaves with ephemera on both sides, made by F. H. Gilson Co., Boston. In Yiddish. ‘In Fire’, a drama in three acts. ’ Written by A Vayter (also Waiter; pseudonym of Ayzik Meyer Devenishski; ca. 1878–1919) ; "Yiddish writer, political activist, and cultural figure. Born in a shtetl in the Vilna region to a strictly observant family that operated a tavern, Ayzik Meyer Devenishski received a traditional Jewish education. In his youth, he became familiar with Haskalah literature, and later studied Russian and Polish literature and the works of radical and revolutionary thinkers. Devenishski left the traditional world and joined the Bund at the time of its inception. He was active in Kovno, Minsk, and Vilna under his party pseudonym "Comrade Aron, " and endeavored to strengthen the national elements of the Bund platform. Devenishski was arrested several times and exiled to Siberia. When his term of exile was over, Devenishski settled in Vilna in 1905, where he contributed to the local Russian press. He played a central role in the revolutionary events of 1905 in Vilna. In 1906, he began his career as a Yiddish writer with a short story under his new pseudonym, A. Vayter, and from then on his literary work was increasingly important to him. Vayter’s transition from political to cultural activities is seen as emblematic of significant circles of the Jewish intelligentsia after the failure of the first Russian Revolution. Along with Shmuel Niger and Shemaryahu Gorelik, Vayter coedited the pioneering journal Literarishe monatshriftn (Literary Monthly) in 1908; he wrote its manifesto postulating a renaissance of Jewish culture and calling for the return of Jewish intelligentsia to it. Vayter also began writing plays, among which Der shtumer (The Mute; 1912) became popular and was produced often, mainly by amateur theater groups. His plays and short stories focus on the disillusionment of modern Jewish intellectuals as they tried to find a way back to traditional yidishkayt. In that period, he also showed great interest in modern Yiddish theater, both in his critical essays and reviews and through his organizational work with Y. L. Peretz and other writers. From 1909 to 1911, Vayter was on the editorial staff of Der fraynd, where he published—among other pieces—the first review of Dovid Bergelson’s literary debut. In 1911, Vayter became the manager of the B. Kletskin publishing house in Vilna, considered from the very beginning to be the preeminent Yiddish publishing house in Eastern Europe. In 1918, Vayter returned to Vilna after several years of Siberian exile. He was very involved in Yiddish cultural activities that had taken root there during the months of Bolshevik rule. When the Poles entered Vilna in April 1919, they carried out a bloody pogrom, and Polish legionnaires executed Vayter by firing squad after falsely accusing him of being a Bolshevik. The memory of his murder became a symbol reminding Jews both of the brutal antisemitic attitude on the part of Poles in the first months of Poland’s independence and of the specific problems that characterized the situation of Jews in Vilna between the two World Wars. This symbol was embodied in the monument at Vayter’s grave in the Jewish cemetery in Vilna. Immediately following the author’s death, Vayter-bukh: Tsum ondenk fun Vayter (Vayter Book: In Memory of Vayter; 1920) was published under the editorship of Shmuel Niger and Zalmen Reyzen. In 1923, Vayter’s Ksovim (Writings) were published with a comprehensive introduction by A. Y. Goldshmidt—the most important source on Vayter’s life and work. Single sheet folded once to make [4]pp. Soft horizontal fold to middle, else a nice example of this early Futurist manifesto, the first on music. The first musician to "surrender to the persuasion of promises and liberation", Pratella was courted early on by Marinetti to join his new movement that he hoped would breathe new life into Italian culture. Though not as nihilistic as Russolo's Art of Noises published three years later, he still makes what at the time, were revolutionary demands that musicians break from the traditional, proclaiming in a later manifesto that" the new order of disorder should be created by destroying the ancient schemes."
