      Leipzig: F.W. Vogel , 1909. First edition of Minkowski?s famous lecture on his theory of four-dimensional space-time, the first published account of this theory to be illustrated with ?spacetime diagrams?, which were widely used later by Stephen Hawking, Roger Penrose and others in the development of general relativity. ?In ?Space and Time?, read by Minkowski in Cologne only a few months before his death, he introduced the notion that made possible the expansion of the relativity theory of Einstein from its specific (1905) to its general form (1916). Minkowski?s space-time hypothesis was in effect a restatement of Einstein?s basic principle in a form that greatly enhanced its plausibility and also introduced important new developments. Hitherto natural phenomena had been thought to occur in a space of three dimensions and to flow uniformly through time. Minkowski maintained that the separation of time and space is a false conception; that time itself is a dimension, comparable to length, breadth, and height; and that therefore the true conception of reality was constituted by a space-time continuum possessing these four dimensions? (<i>Printing and the Mind of Man</i>). ?The laws of physics were written in the language of the geometry of this four dimensional space ... Physics had become geometry, and it was a stunning achievement? (Gerber, pp. 358-9). ??Raum und Zeit? was originally published in Vol. II (1909) of the <i>Verhandlungen</i> of the Deutscher Naturforscher und Aertze [offered here]; it was later reprinted in the <i>Jahresbericht der Deutschen Mathematiker Vereinigung</i>? (Norman). It is most commonly encountered in the separate (and later) printing from the <i>Jahresbericht</i> published as a tribute after Minkowski?s sudden and tragic death. They are radical. Henceforth space by itself, and time by itself, are doomed to fade away into mere shadows, and only a kind of union of the two will preserve an independent reality.? He ended as follows: 'The validity without exception of the world postulate [i.e., the relativity postulate], I like to think, is the true nucleus of an electromagnetic image of the world, which, discovered by Lorentz, and further revealed by Einstein, now lies open in the full light of day?. It is hardly surprising that these opening and closing statements caused a tremendous stir among his listeners, though probably few of them followed the lucid remarks he made in the body of the speech. Minkowski did not live to see his lecture appear in print. In January 1909 he died of appendicitis. [David] Hilbert called him ?a gift of heaven? when he spoke in his memory? (Pais, p. 152). <br/><br/> ?The impact of Minkowski?s ideas on the twentieth century physics has been so immense that one cannot imagine modern physics without the notion of spacetime. It would hardly be an exaggeration to say that spacetime has been the greatest discovery in physics of all times. The only other discovery that comes close to spacetime is Einstein?s general relativity, which revealed that gravity is a manifestation of the curvature of spacetime. But it was the discovery of spacetime which paved the way for this deep understanding of what gravity really is? (Petkov, p. v). <br/><br/> Initially, Einstein was not impressed by Minkowski?s four-dimensional formulation of special relativity, describing it as ?überflüssige Gelehrsamkeit? (superfluous learnedness), but he soon realized that his theory of gravity would be impossible without Minkowski?s revolutionary contributions. At the beginning of his 1916 paper on general relativity Einstein wrote: ?The generalization of the theory of relativity has been facilitated considerably by Minkowski, a mathematician who was the first one to recognize the formal equivalence of space coordinates and the time coordinate, and utilize this in the construction of the theory.? In 1946 in his ?Autobiographical Notes? (p. 59), Einstein summarized Minkowski?s main contribution: ?Minkowski?s important contribution to the theory lies in the following: Before Minkowski?s investigation it was necessary to carry out a Lorentz transformation on a law in order to test its invariance under such transformations; he, on the other hand, succeeded in introducing a formalism such that the mathematical form of the law itself guarantees its invariance under Lorentz transformations. By creating a four-dimensional tensor-calculus he achieved the same thing for the four-dimensional space which the ordinary vector calculus achieves for the three spatial dimensions. He also showed that the Lorentz transformation (apart from a different algebraic sign due to the special character of time) is nothing but a rotation of the coordinate system in the four-dimensional space.? <br/><br/> Hermann Minkowski was born on 22 June 1864, in Alexotas, then in Russia, now the city of Kaunas in Lithuania. His parents were German and, from Alexotas, they moved back to their native land, in fact to Königsberg (now Kaliningrad in Russia), when he was only 8 years old. After attending the Gymnasium in Königsberg he attended the University there from which he was to receive his doctorate in 1885. As a young student, in 1883, he won the Grand Prix of the Academy of Sciences in Paris for his work on number theory. From Königsberg, he moved to a position at the University of Bonn in 1887. In 1896, after a brief return to Königsberg, he was appointed to a position at the Polytechnic in Zürich where he was one of Einstein?s teachers. Einstein apparently thought Minkowski an excellent teacher of mathematics. Minkowski?s view of Einstein, at the time, was less kind. In 1902 he moved again, this time to a chair at the University of Göttingen, where he remained for the remainder of his relatively short life, dying in 1909 at the age of only 44. In Göttingen, under the influence of David Hilbert, he became interested in mathematical physics. <br/><br/> In October 1907 Hilbert and Minkowski conducted a joint seminar at Göttingen on the equations of electrodynamics in which they studied Einstein?s 1905 paper ?Zur Elektrodynamik bewegter Körper? (<i>Annalen der Physik</i> 17, pp. 891-921), and Poincaré?s 1906 article ?Sur la dynamique de l?électron? (<i>Rendiconti del Circolo Matematico di Palermo</i> 21, pp. 129-76). Participants in the seminar included Max von Laue, Max Born, Max Abraham and Arnold Sommerfeld. On November 5 Minkowski delivered a talk to the Göttingen Mathematical Society entitled ?The Principle of Relativity?; it was not published until 1915 (?Das Relativitätsprinzip,? <i>Annalen der Physik</i> 47, pp. 927-38). Minkowski opened his talk by declaring that recent developments in the electromagnetic theory of light had given rise to a completely new conception of space and time, namely, as a four-dimensional, non-Euclidean manifold. He introduced many of the mathematical concepts and terms that have come to be associated with his name and that became standard in any discussion of relativity, but he did not treat them systematically at this stage. <br/><br/> Minkowski?s second talk, ?The Basic Equations of Electromagnetic Processes in Moving Bodies?, was delivered at the meeting of the Göttingen Scientific Society on December 21, 1907, and published in April 1908. ?It presented a new theory of the electrodynamics of moving media, incorporating formal insights of the relativity theories introduced earlier by Einstein, Poincaré and Planck. For example, it took over the fact that the Lorentz transformations form a group, and that Maxwell?s equations are covariant under this group. Minkowski also shared Poincaré?s view of the Lorentz transformation as a rotation in a four-dimensional space with one imaginary coordinate. These insights Minkowski developed and presented in an original, four-dimensional approach to the Maxwell-Lorentz vacuum equations, the electrodynamics of moving media, and in an appendix, Lorentz-covariant mechanics? (Gray, p. 102). <br/><br/> ??The basic equations? made for challenging reading. It was packed with new notation, terminology, and calculation rules, it made scant reference to the scientific literature, and offered no figures or diagrams ? Few were impressed at first by Minkowski?s innovations in spacetime geometry and four-dimensional vector calculus. Shortly after ?The basic equations? appeared in print, two of Minkowski?s former students, Einstein and Laub, discovered what they believed to be an infelicity in Minkowski?s definition of ponderomotive force density. These two young physicists were more impressed by Minkowski?s electrodynamics of moving media than by the novel four-dimensional formalism in which it was couched, which seemed far too laborious. Ostensibly as a service to the community, Einstein and [Jakob] Laub re-expressed Minkowski?s theory in terms of ordinary vector analysis [?Ãœber die elektromagnetischen Grundgleichungen für bewegte Körper?, <i>Annalen der Physik</i> 26, 1908, pp. 532-540] ?<br/><br/> ?The form Minkowski gave to his theory of moving media in ?The basic equations? had been judged unwieldy by a founder of relativity theory, and in the circumstances, decisive action was called for if his formalism was not to be ignored. In September 1908, during the annual meeting of the German Association of Natural Scientists and Physicians in Cologne, Minkowski took action, by affirming the reality of the four-dimensional ?world?, and its necessity for physics ? One way for Minkowski to persuade physicists of the value of his spacetime approach to understanding physical interactions was to appeal to their visual intuition. From the standpoint of visual aids, the contrast between Minkowski?s two publications on spacetime is remarkable: where ?The basic equations? is bereft of diagrams and illustrations, Minkowski?s Cologne lecture makes effective use of diagrams in two and three dimensions. For instance, Minkowski employed a two-dimensional spacetime diagrams to illustrate FitzGerald-Lorentz contraction of an electron, and the lightcone structure of spacetime? (Walter, pp. 14-17).         Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 - Autograph Musical Quotation from the year of his American Debut

      Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Sought-after AMQS in pencil on an off-white 6.25 x 7 album page. Horowitz pens one bar of music, the instantly recognizable opening of the Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 3, signing below, "V. Horowitz, Philadelphia 13/II 28." In fine condition. The first AMQS we have ever offered of the world-renowned pianist.<br style="">Rachmaninoff called the Third the favorite of his own piano concertos and early on stated that Horowitz was "the only player in the world of this piece." Composed in 1909, the Concerto was first published in 1910 and received a somewhat cool initial reception. Indeed, it was not until the 1930s and largely thanks to the advocacy of Vladimir Horowitz that the Third concerto became popular.  He recorded the Concerto three times, his first being the 1931 recording with Albert Coates and the London Symphony Orchestra, which was the first ever recording of the work. This recording includes the cuts made by the composer, who had proposed them to Horowitz at their meeting in January of 1928, the month prior to the present quotation. It was in that same month that Horowitz made his American debut when he performed at Jan. 12 at Carnegie Hall, with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. He continued with 36 concerts around the country, including Philadelphia. His recital debut came in New York that February, and a recording contract followed.  The rest, as they say, is history!

Durch den frühen Tod der Mutter, das enge finanzielle Korsett, vor allem aber die eigene Tuberkuloseerkrankung und die Suche nach geeigneten Aufenthaltsorten war Morgenstern zu einem unsteten Wanderleben gezwungen. 1909 begegnete er Rudolf Steiner, dessen Schriften und Denken, dem er in den verbleibenden Lebensjahren eng verbunden blieb. Dezember 1999 in Wäschenbeuren) seine Fotografien vor allem in der 'Schwäbischen Illustrierten', im 'Radio-Spiegel', im 'Piguin' sowie dem amerikanischen Magazin 'Heute', das in deutscher Sprache erschien. In den 1950er Jahren profitierte er vom Boom an Radio- und Fernsehzeitschriften und der Regenbogen-Presse. In der 'iwz' , der 'Südwestdeutschen Illustrierten Wochenendzeitung wurden nicht nur Bildberichte, sondern auch zahlreiche Titelfotos von Kilian veröffentlicht. In diesem Magazin ... erschienen Kilians Aufnahmen auch in den folgenden beiden Jahrzehnten. Häufig arbeitete er für Stuttgarter Zeitungen sowie für 'Hör zu!... Auch der 'Steren' und die 'Zeit', das 'Time Magazine' und 'Picture Post' sowie viele andere Zeitungen im In- und Ausland veröffentlichten seine Bilder. Die Themen und Reportagen, die er illustrierte, reichen von der der Not der Bevölkerung in der Nachkriegszeit über Theater, Kunst und Film bis zu Musik, Autos, Reisen und Fußball. Thomas und Katia Mann hielten sich Anfang Mai 1955 in Stuttgart auf, wo Thomas Mann am 8. Mai 1955 bei der Gedenkfeier zu Schillers 150. Todestag im Großen Haus des Württembergischen Staatstheaters seine Rede "Versuch über Schiller" hielt. "Die Erschöpfung nach dem Vortrag ist Thomas Mann noch auf der Fotografie anzusehen, die Hannes Kilian am 9. Mai 1955 bei einem Empfang des Publizisten Rudolf Pechel machte. Drei Monate vor seinem Tod scheint sich der Schriftsteller an Glas un Zigarette förmlich festzuhalten" (oben zitierter Katalog Stuttgart 2004, Seite 54, mit einer Abbildung der vorliegenden Photographie auf Seite 55).

Oblong 4to. 24 by 29 cm. 56, [2] pp. Fourteen of the pages are bright color plates generally depicting the smart set riding in beautiful vehicles, but also an illustration of the company's expansive headquarters and garage located in Kennington, a neighborhood in South London next to Vauxhall. The text presents both matter-of-fact info about the company's taxi services -- charges, policies, etc. -- but also some lighter breezer fare on such topics as a trip to the Channel or Coventry. Red cloth cover heavily soiled. Endpapers, title and final leaf grubby. Otherwise, lower band of leaves with hint of waviness that might come from a passing exposure to moisture, and perhaps a touch of soiling here and there. A few other finger smudges, minor closed tears and light wear besides. Notwithstanding these issues, a very handsome sales promotion for a cab company that was not just selling itself but also the notion of the horseless carriage as a luxury alternative to the horse drawn vehicle not yet fully vanquished in metropolitan use.

Else the yellow inside pages are very bright. Light foxing and an excellent photoplate. A rare Wisden.

Shackleton as frontispiece to first volume, with portrait of the Northern Party at the South Magnetic Pole to second volume. Both are protected with captioned tissue guards. Generously illustrated throughout with photographic plates and diagrams, in addition to several plates in colour. Bound in half dark blue morocco over original pictorial boards, tooled in silver gilt, Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Folding maps in pouch at rear of vol. II. Minor and occasional spotting to textblock, deckled edge a little toned, a few minor marks to cloth. A very good copy in an attractive recent leather binding. A comprehensive work, filled with a mass of maps, photographs and sketches which chronicle the expedition. This item truly embodies the golden age of polar exploration. Although the expedition team was unable to attain its goal of reaching the South Pole, Shackleton and his companions reached 88° 23' S, a point only 180 kilometres (112 mi) from the Pole. Accomplishments also included: the first ascent of Mount Erebus, the location of the Magnetic South Pole by Douglas Mawson, Edgeworth David and MacKay (January 16, 1909), and the discovery of the Beardmore Glacier passage (named after Shackleton's patron). The group was the first to cross the Trans-Antarctic mountain range, and to set foot on the South Polar Plateau. Subsisting on half-rations, Shackleton discovered the party's salvation – a letter declaring that Nimrod would sail on February 26, 1909. In response, the crew burnt the camp to attract the departing ship's attention. The plan succeeded, and on March 1, 1909, Shackleton departed for home and returned to the United Kingdom a hero. He was knighted for reaching the furthest south of any human at that time. Regarding the failure to reach the South Pole, Shackleton remarked to his wife: "Better a live donkey than a dead lion.". It would be three more years before Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first to reach the South Pole, followed shortly by Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition.

With original typed envelope. $4800.Extraordinary and revealing typed letter signed from Peary to Stanley Gray, written shortly after Peary's bitter controversy with Frederick Cook had erupted over which of the two explorers was the first to reach the North Pole.After leading several prior Arctic expeditions that fell short of the final goal, Peary set out on his last quest for the North Pole in 1908. Accompanied by Matthew Henson and four Eskimos, he made a final dash for the pole, which he claimed to have reached on Apr. 6, 1909. Upon his return he learned of the almost simultaneous announcement of Dr. Frederick A. Cook who claimed to have reached the Pole one year earlier. A bitter controversy followed. Although Cook spent much of his life attempting to substantiate his claim, Congress officially recognized Peary's achievement in 1911.Peary's emotions are evident in this letter answering an invitation to lecture about his expedition. "I am in rather a peculiar position in regard to lectures,"&#157; he writes. "Occurrences within the last two months have, in my opinion, so lowered the lecture platform and the great accomplishment which the world has been working for for nearly four hundred years, that, personally, I would rather not lecture at all".       29 September 1909 - Gelatin silver print, signed at the front, 7.6 x 11.8 cm. Mounted on cardboard 20 x 24 cm. Some foxing on the mount and sides of the photograph. Framed. Photograph taken around the time Mahler composed his famous Symphony number 9. It was the last symphony Mahler completed. Some interpret 9th Symphony's ending as Mahler's conscious farewell to the world, as it was composed following the death of his beloved daughter Maria Anna in 1907 and the diagnosis of his fatal heart disease. But it is known that Mahler had a very sucessful season in 1909-1910 and had continued working on his unfinished 10th Symphony until his death from endocarditis in May 1911. An important, profusely illustrated survey of the history of the renowned eighteenth-century porcelain produced in the Thüringia region of Germany. The work begins with a history of all the major manufacturers: Volkstedt, Kloster-Veilsdorf, Gotha, Wallendorf, Gera, Limbach, Ilmenau, Grossbreitenbach, and Rauenstein. Each section is illustrated with examples of their work. These are followed by 60 plates printed on thick paper, most showing multiple objects, and include manufacturer, date, and other details. The long and distinguished career of art scholar Richard Graul (1862-1944) included stints as secretary to the Gesellschaft für vervielfältigende Kunst in Vienna and editor of its magazine, followed by roles in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. In 1896, Graul departed to Leipzig, where he assumed the position of director of the Kunstgewerbemuseum until 1929. Albrecht Kurzwelly (1868-1917), also an art scholar, served, i.a., as deputy director of the Kunstgewerbemuseum Leipzig from 1904-1909, and was also lecturer in art history at the Königlichen Akademie für graphische Künste und Kunstgewerbe. A scarce title. The pages and plates are clean and in excellent condition, lightly age-toned. With attractive Free Library of Philadelphia donor bookplate and small bookseller ticket. Perforated stamp on title page and one other; a few other inoffensive library markings. Covers lightly soiled, front interior hinge starting to split from the quite heavy textblock, but holding firm. Signed by William Taft as ""Wm. H. Taft"", and dated ""Thursday"". Expected fold. Slight ink smudging to signature appearing to have occurred at the time of the writing of the letter. Mounting remnants at top of both versos. Faint staining to left margin of the first page, not affecting text.Taft pens a casual letter to ""Dear Hilles"", undated save for the word ""Thursday"" as follows:""This will introduce to Rev. John Wesley Hill D. D. Pastor Metropolitan Temple M. E. church N. Y. City. He is a warm political and personal friend of mine and I want you to know each other. He is a great preacher and speaker. He reached N. Y. from Ohio as others have done. Give him as much time as you have."" Taft was most likely writing to his personal secretary, Charles D. Hilles, who earlier served as Assistant Secretary of the United States Treasury. His warm letter referred to having his secretary Charles Hilles meet John Wesley Hill, who was the pastor of the Metropolitan Temple Methodist and Episcopal Church in New York City and a great admirer of Abraham Lincoln. Both Hilles and Hill were from Ohio, and made their way to New York and based on Taft's simple, casual letter it appeared he just wished to have them meet to ""know each other"". A lovely, scarce example of a Taft ALS on White House stationary."

      Trenke i Fiusno 1909 - Octavo (29.5 x 19.5 cm). 15, 15 pp. Original black cloth, Imperial double-headed eagle in embossed to upper cover; slightly rubbed, a small hole to spine. Fine example, with Imperial provenance and in its original Imperial binding, of this rare ceremonial program with text in Russian and French. Mikhail Nikolaevich Romanov (1832-1909) made a successful military carrier in Russia. In 1863 he was appointed a Commander of the First Caucasian Artillery regiment that was initially formed in 1837. Under his command the regiment took part in Russo-Turkish War 1877-8 and played significant role in the strategically important capture of the fortress Kars by the Russian forces. The present copy belonged to the own son of Mikhail Nikolaevich, the Grand Duke Mikhail Mikhailovich, who was a grandson of Nicholas I. He lived in exile first in the South of France and then in London, sent there by his first cousin Alexander III for his morganatic marriage with the granddaughter of Alexander Pushkin Countess Sophie of Merenberg. Ward, signed by her in Volume I, profusely illustrated with frontispiece photogravures (in two states"" one hand-colored) and numerous full-page plates of principal people and places.The declared aim of English novelist Mary Augusta Arnold Ward was "equalization"&#157; in society. She was the granddaughter of Thomas Arnold, founder of Rugby School, and niece of the poet Matthew Arnold. A leading intellectual of her day, she supported higher education for women and was appointed as one of the first seven women magistrates in 1920. Ward began her writing career by contributing articles to magazines, while working on a children's book, Milly and Olly (1881). Her novels, 25 in number, "deal with social and religious themes, frequently contrasting traditional belief with the values of progress and intellectual freedom"&#157; (Drabble, 1044). Lady Rose's Daughter was the best-selling novel in America in 1903, as was The Marriage of William Ashe in 1905 (New York Times). Her most popular novel, however, was the religious "novel with a purpose"&#157; Robert Elsmere (1888), which traced the mental evolution and religious crisis of a young English clergyman. Ward was one of the founders of the British Women's National Anti-Suffrage League in 1908 and became editor of the Anti-Suffrage Review. In accordance with this latter conviction, she published some of her subsequent writings under the name "Mrs. Humphry Ward."&#157; A beautifully bound set in fine condition.       (Deckel gering verfärbt oder ausgeblichen, der Holzschnitt nach Cezanne etwas braunflekcig, die beiden Renoirblätter sauber, die Hemdchen mit kleinen Fehlsteleln, insgesamt wohlerhaltenes, schönes Exemplar) Erstmals 1909 mit anderer Bebilderung erschienen. Die zwei Renoirs jeweils im Werkverzeichnis von Delteil nachgewiesen (als Nummern 22 "Kinderbild" resp. 6 "Zwei Mädchen"). Das Exemplar stammt laut Auskunft des Vorbesitzers - aus dem Exemplar selber ergibt sich das nicht - aus dem Besitz des schwedischen Künstlers Olaf Casimir Agren (1874-1962). Zwischen 1980 und 1938 lebte er in Frankreich und Italien, besuchte zwischenzeitlich auch Deutschland und hat wohl bei dieser Gelegenheit das Buch erworben. Nach 1938 lebte er bis zu seinem Tod in Flivik / Südschweden.

        Three Years in Tibet

A narrative of travels in Tibet between 1897 and 1903. Written by Ekai Kawaguchi (1866 - 1945), a Japanese Buddhist monk, the first recorded Japanese citizen to travel to Tibet. Kawaguchi is known four his journeys to Nepal (1899, 1903, 1905 & 1913), and Tibet (July 4, 1900-June 15, 1902; and 1913-1915). Tibet was officially off limits to all foreigners, but Kawaguchi managed to coss the Himalayas on an unpatrolled path, posing as a Chinese monk and taking almost 4 years to reach Lhasa. This was the first visit to Lhasa by an outsider since the 1844 visit of French missionary Evariste Huc. While there, Kawaguchi devoted himself to pilgrimage and study, mastering classical Tibetan language, and gaining an audience with the 13th Dalai Lama. Tall 8vo, xvi, 719pp, 11 plates from printed photographs (including one large folding of Mount Gaurishankara at the rear) and one folding sketch map with the author's route from Calcutta north indicated in red. Quarter green cloth and marbled boards. Gilt title on black spine label. Spine label slightly chipped at edges, spine slightly etched, corners slightly rubbed.         Meyers Großes Konversations-Lexikon, 6. Auflage, Kriegsausgabe (Eierstabausgabe), 20 + 4 (24) Bände.

      Leipzig und Wien, Bibliographisches Institut, 1909- 1913 Die 6. Auflage gilt als Höhepunkt der Meyer-Werkgeschichte und als größtes und prächtigstes Lexikon seiner Epoche. Es gibt sie in zahlreichen unterschiedlichen Ausgaben, die sich durch eine überaus reizvolle Jugendstil-Ornamentik auszeichnen. Die Auflage erschien in vier Einbandvarianten sowie - nach Kriegsausbruch 1913 - in mehreren Kriegsausgaben. Da sowohl Leder- als auch Goldlieferungen sofort nach Kriegsbeginn kriegswirtschaftlich reklamiert wurden, mußten die Verlage bei der Buchproduktion auf Ersatzmaterialien zurückgreifen. Die Buchrücken wurden fortan aus einem Lederimitat-Material mit lederähnlicher Narbung gefertigt, die goldenen Titelprägungen durch Farbprägungen bzw. - aufträge ersetzt. Ein Merkmal dieser Ausgaben ist außerdem, daß Stadtpläne vor der Auslieferung aus ihnen entfernt wurden - der Feind sollte keine Gelegenheit erhalten, mit Hilfe des Lexikons Einmarschpläne zu schmieden. Die Kriegsausgaben der 6. Auflage von Meyers Konversations-Lexikon, die es in mehreren farblichen Varianten gibt, sind heute sehr selten und als vollständige Exemplare mit allen Ergänzungsbänden in gutem Zustand kaum noch anzutreffen. Sie dürfen daher durchaus als Sammler-Exemplare gelten. Buchrücken kaum berieben, Gesamterscheinungsbild harmonisch Deckel sowie Buchschnitt partiell leicht fleckig (dies aber unauffällig). Seiten in bemerkenswert guter, glatt-glänzender Papierqualität, die keine Alterung erkennen läßt, sauber und nahezu fleckenfrei. In toto - bis auf die leichte Fleckigkeit - sehr gutes Exemplar dieser seltenen Kriegsausgabe mit allen Ergänzungsbänden. Er gilt als bedeutendster französischer Dramatiker der Nachkriegsjahrzehnte und als ein führender Vertreter des absurden Theaters. Derartig reichhaltig signierte Widmungsexemplare von Eugène Ionesco sind äußerst selten!!!!

The gilt text on the spine is slightly tarnished, but the gilt text and borders on the front board are bright and clean. The cloth at the head of the spine is slightly worn and showing a thread or two. There is also a stamped prior owner's signature on the front paste down and first free end page. The seventh Lakeside Classic from Christmas, 1909. 309 pages of text. Despite its minor shortcomings, this remains a collectable copy of a very uncommon early edition in the Lakeside Classic series.
