London: Adam and Charles Black,, 1909. Containing Twelve Full-Page Illustrations by T. M. R. Whitwell. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and upper board in gold, black, red, and white. Frontispiece and 11 plates. Light rubbing to the corners, a few minor marks to cloth at rear board, colours and gilt decorating the covers for the most part nicely distinct, internally sound and, but for some tanning and spotting to edges and some endleaves, fresh. Withal an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. "Each of Wodehouse's school stories is a superior example of the genre, and still readable; but in his last public-school novel, Mike (1909), something extraordinary happened: Wodehouse, as a writer, moved into a higher and dazzling sphere. In its narrative energy, dialogue, characterization, and ability to create sunny laughter, Mike is Wodehouse's first masterpiece. George Orwell called it 'perhaps the best light school story in the English language'. Of his own books it was Wodehouse's favourite. It also introduced one of his most memorable characters, Psmith ? the letter 'P' was added by Psmith himself, but was not to be pronounced ? Psmith was unstoppably talkative, and had a splendid conversational line in mandarin orotundity" (ODNB). Mike is, of all Wodehouse's stories, the most given over to his beloved cricket.

First American Edition deluxe, limited to fifty copies signed by Rackham on the half-title verso. Large quarto (11 1/2 x 9 in; 295 x 229 mm). xv, [1, blank], 325, [1, imprint] pp. Decorative title-page printed in black and red. The edge of the box complete with original label printed in black and red "Édition De Luxe/Grimm's Fairy Tales/Illustrated by Arthur Rackham/Net, $20.00/Doubleday, Page & Company, Publishers, New York". In over fifty years of specializing in the works of Arthur Rackham this is by far the finest copy I have ever seen. (DJB). "Reprinted from the 1900 edition, with added illustrations and larger pages" (Latimore and Haskell), and others redrawn and colored. "Rackham's illustrations to Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen or Poe show him at his most imaginative" (Hamilton, p. 11). "The first year of the new century marked a turning point in Rackham's career, for in it were published his original illustrations for Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm. The book was immediately successful, and its publication marked the beginning of Rackham's lasting fame. Two new editions were called for within ten years. At intervals from 1900 onwards Rackham worked on the original drawings, partially or entirely redrawing some of them on colour, adding new ones in colour and in back-and-white, and generally overhauling them as a set, until the final and best-known edition, of 1909, contained forty coloured illustrations and fifty-five line drawings. A comparison between the first and the last editions of his Grimm emphasizes the remarkable progress that Rackham made in a decade" (Hudson, p. 47-8). Latimore and Haskell, p. 34. Riall, p. 97.

After early aspirations of a military life he became an artist, and worked in Ipswich alongside artists such as Robert Burrows, and his brother Thomas (1825-1906). In 1840 Smythe moved to Norwich, and is said to have worked with John Sell Cotman. He was undoubtedly influenced by several Norwich School artists, such as his friend Frederick Ladbrooke. His work attracted commissions from eminent patrons such as the Earl of Cardigan, and the Greene family.

"Capsuimun", Barker Road, The Peak - The Holyoak Family Photograph Album.

1909- 1912.. 131 black and white photographs in leather covered album. 34.5 x 28cm. Photographs vary in size between approximately 24 x 29cm to the very smallest, 3.6 x 6cm, with most of the photographs in between. Some photographs have been removed, one leaf loose. A few photographs with captions in red pencil. A number of photographs have been tightly cropped around the main subject of the image and many have a border in coloured crayon. Photograph of the parade ground is a little faded, otherwise the photographs are in good condition some showing a little silvering. From the collection of Hong Kong artist, author, historian and collector, Arthur Hacker. At first glance this oblong leather personal photograph album does not appear to be particularly special, however on closer examination and with the addition of the loosely inserted 12 page typescript story of the album it comes to life. The album shows family photographs of the Holyoak family of "Capsuimun", Barker Road, The Peak. The photographs are mainly of family interest and show two weddings, a handsome photograph of the Parade Ground, the family twin girls at play at home and at the beach, The Hon. Percy Hobson Holyoak in his office and in his regalia, Mrs Holyoak with her daughters and pet dog and the family being transported by sedan chair. However towards the end of the album there are ten pages of photographs - 29 images in all - which record the exterior (6 photographs) and the interior (23 photographs) of "Capsuimun" the gracious Peak residence of this successful family. These interior photographs, which show the furnishings and decorations of their residence "Capsuimun", offer an unusual picture of the Edwardian home of a well-to-do European family in Hong Kong at the time. The photograph album is greatly enhanced by the 1650 word piece by Charles Lanyon entitled "The Mystery of Capsuimun" which is loosely inserted. Well written and entertaining Charles Lanyon tells the story of how he chanced upon this initially rather unprepossessing album in an antique shop (unfortunately he doesn't say when or where but likely in the United Kingdom) and how he went about identifying who the house and family were. Many trips on the Peak Tram insured as he attempted to identify the house. However thanks to Charles Lanyon we know that the album was the property of the family of The Honourable Percy Hobson Holyoak, one time member of the Hong Kong Legislative and Executive Councils, a partner with Reiss Brothers and later the founder of Holyoak, Massey & Co and Chairman of Union Insurance Company of Canton, the Hongkong and Macao Steamship Company, the court of the Directors of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank... to quote Lanyon "In fact there seems to be very little he was not chairman of: the Chamber of Commerce (five times), the Hong Kong Club, the Victoria Recreation Club - the list is endless." .

Rare William Howard Taft ALS as President on White House letterhead

Washington, DC, 1909 - 1913. 5.25" x 6.75". "Two pages on White House Washington letterhead, written on recto only with versos blank. 5.25"" x 6.75"". Signed by William Taft as ""Wm. H. Taft"", and dated ""Thursday"". Expected fold. Slight ink smudging to signature appearing to have occurred at the time of the writing of the letter. Mounting remnants at top of both versos. Faint staining to left margin of the first page, not affecting text.Taft pens a casual letter to ""Dear Hilles"", undated save for the word ""Thursday"" as follows:""This will introduce to Rev. John Wesley Hill D. D. Pastor Metropolitan Temple M. E. church N. Y. City. He is a warm political and personal friend of mine and I want you to know each other. He is a great preacher and speaker. He reached N. Y. from Ohio as others have done. Give him as much time as you have."" Taft was most likely writing to his personal secretary, Charles D. Hilles, who earlier served as Assistant Secretary of the United States Treasury. His warm letter referred to having his secretary Charles Hilles meet John Wesley Hill, who was the pastor of the Metropolitan Temple Methodist and Episcopal Church in New York City and a great admirer of Abraham Lincoln. Both Hilles and Hill were from Ohio, and made their way to New York and based on Taft's simple, casual letter it appeared he just wished to have them meet to ""know each other"". A lovely, scarce example of a Taft ALS on White House stationary."

Verlag "Reiss". Reiss heiratete 1940 im New Yorker Exil die Fotografin Lotte Jacobi.
