The Heart of the Antarctic Being the story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907–1909. With an Introduction by Hugh Robert Mill, D.Sc. An Account of the First Journey to the South Magnetic Pole by Professor T. W. Edgeworth David, F.R.S.

London: William Heinemann, 1909 - 2 volumes, large octavo. Original blue pictorial cloth, front covers with large silver block, spines lettered gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut. With the drab paper, typographical dust jackets, Rosove's No.1 without the pricing details. Light damping at the fore-edge of all boards, the silver blocks to the front boards slightly oxidised as always, frontispieces browned verso, light browning else, foxing to the fore-edges, the jackets a touch rubbed, minor chipping and splitting at the heads of the spines, small hole to the lower panel of that of volume II, but overall very good set indeed, entirely unrestored. Photogravure frontispiece to each volume, 12 captioned tissue-guarded coloured, and 255 black and white other plates in all, 3 maps, panorama in end-pocket of volume II, and numerous illustrations and diagrams throughout. Without the errata slip in volume II. First edition. Shackleton's account of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1907–9 (Nimrod), reviewed on publication by the Manchester Guardian as "the best book of Polar travel which has ever been written". The sledge expedition "to the south magnetic pole was one of the three foremost achievements of this expedition. The other two achievements were, first, the ascent and survey of Mount Erebus (12,448 feet), the active volcano on Ross Island and, second, the southern sledge journey, which reached within 100 miles of the south pole" (ODNB). The expedition established Shackleton as a "bona fide English hero," but the success of the book did little to alleviate "the financial problems left to him by the expedition" (Books on Ice). Sir Raymond Priestley (1886–1974), a British Geologist and Antarctic explorer who accompanied Shackleton on the 1907–1913 Antarctic expeditions, said, "For scientific leadership, give me Scott; for swift and efficient travel, Amundsen; but when you are in a hopeless situation, when there seems to be no way out, get on your knees and pray for Shackleton". Rosove notes "dust-jackets are very scarce". Books on Ice 7.4; Rosove 305.B1b; Spence 1097; Taurus 58. [Attributes: First Edition]

        MILITARY DEMOLITIONS ...

[Ft. Leavenworth, KS ?], 1909. 40pp. plus 13 leaves of plates from photographs (printed on rectos only). Small octavo. Staple-bound in pale blue-gray printed wrappers. Three pages of diagrams in text. A bit of sunning to wrapper edges, tiny closed tear at fore-edge of upper wrapper, slight chipping at crown and toe of spine, fore-corners of lower wrapper have soft creases, a couple of thread-like adhesion marks to title, otherwise a very good copy, internally about fine. The rarest of two forms of the first separate publication by the future General of the Army, published when he was a 1st Lt. in the Corps of Engineers. The text is noted on the title leaf as "Delivered : Mounted Service School, Fort Riley, Kansas, November. 1908 [/] Stafe [sic] College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, December, 1908 [/] School of the Line, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, January 1909." MacArthur had been posted to Fort Leavenworth in April of 1908, where he was given his first command, Company K, 3rd Engineer Battalion. He was promoted to Battalion Adjutant in 1909 and then Engineer Officer at Fort Leavenworth in 1910. Another more formal version of this work was published after its adoption for use in the Ft. Leavenworth service schools, paginated at only 34 pages. The probability that this is the earliest, and likely a preliminary form, is suggested by the unadorned wrappers (the other version bears notice of the adoption and the logo of the Corp of Engineers), a resetting and rearrangement of the title (and correction of 'Stafe' to 'Staff') in the other version, a revision of page breaks between the two versions, the inclusion of the three pages of drawings in the formal pagination in this version (pages 19, 20, and 21) and their exclusion from pagination in the other version (they fall between pages 16 and 17), among other features. The relative scarcity of this form (OCLC locates two copies of this version, at West Point and the Army Heritage Center) when compared to the other (15 copies, with wide dissemination among libraries) also weighs on the side of it being a preliminary printing. OCLC: 15999505.

Shackleton's account of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1907?9 (Nimrod) was reviewed on publication by the Manchester Guardian as "the best book of Polar travel which has ever been written".

That place is mine" - Original artwork for H. Rider Haggard's "Morning Star"]

the artist, n.p. 1909 - 9.5x13.5 inch illustration board with beautifully rendered gouache and pencil illustration, signed "Michael 1909" at lower left corner, a pen note on the back indicating "Morning Star p. 198." This image was indeed used for the color plate facing page 198 in Haggard's novel, a fantasy set in ancient Egypt. This was one of three plates in the book, the scene depicted here portraying the blonde queen Neter-Tua just after she has claimed the throne of Egypt, enraging Prince Abi and his dusky acolytes. AC Michael's illustrations captivated a generation of readers, but the original artwork for these illustrations appears on the market very infrequently. The piece at hand is the same work that was sold in 1982 by the George S. MacManus Company. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Mike.

London: Adam and Charles Black,, 1909. Containing Twelve Full-Page Illustrations by T. M. R. Whitwell. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and upper board in gold, black, red, and white. Frontispiece and 11 plates. Light rubbing to the corners, a few minor marks to cloth at rear board, colours and gilt decorating the covers for the most part nicely distinct, internally sound and, but for some tanning and spotting to edges and some endleaves, fresh. Withal an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. "Each of Wodehouse's school stories is a superior example of the genre, and still readable; but in his last public-school novel, Mike (1909), something extraordinary happened: Wodehouse, as a writer, moved into a higher and dazzling sphere. In its narrative energy, dialogue, characterization, and ability to create sunny laughter, Mike is Wodehouse's first masterpiece. George Orwell called it 'perhaps the best light school story in the English language'. Of his own books it was Wodehouse's favourite. It also introduced one of his most memorable characters, Psmith ? the letter 'P' was added by Psmith himself, but was not to be pronounced ? Psmith was unstoppably talkative, and had a splendid conversational line in mandarin orotundity" (ODNB). Mike is, of all Wodehouse's stories, the most given over to his beloved cricket.

contributes to.'Twenty Five Cricket Stories'. i) Tom, Dick and Harry, ii) The Wire-Pullers, iii) The Lost Bowlers and iv) How Pillingshoot Scored.

George Newnes Ltd., London, n.d. [1909] - FIRST (AND ONLY) EDITION, possibly withdrawn. Contains four Wodehouse stories, three of which are published for the first time in book form (How Pillingshoot Scored had already appeared in Tales of St.Austins, 1903). These Newnes-period Wodehouse stories were collected in this particularly scarce omnibus and the present example offered is the publisher's own file copy. We note only one other copy for sale (also through ourselves) and none have ever appeared at auction. The bibliographer McIlvaine mentions the title but does not provide a description. A companion volume Twenty Five Football Stories was also mooted by Newnes the following year, but again this has proved virtually impossible to locate. The sheer paucity of copies suggests that both these sporting volumes were printed in small numbers or may have been withdrawn. Whatever the circumstances, this remains an exceptionally rare book. 208pp. Small octavo. Bound in publisher's illustrated card covers stamped by publisher as the 'File' copy, later linen back, housed in collector's folding box. Some rubbing and wear to joints else very good indeed.
