JAMES, Henry [DARROW, Clarence]
Scribner's, New York, 1910. 8vo. Grey cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover. Gilt top edge. Deckle edge. Hand-pressed paper. 312 pp. No jacket as usual. Spine is rather sunned, with a few scuffs along left edge. Very minor shelf wear. "Library of Clarence S. Darrow" bookplate pasted inside front cover. This is a first edition of Henry James's 1910 novel which belonged to legendary attorney Clarence Darrow, whose bookplate is pasted inside the front cover. Books from Darrow's personal collection are quite scarce, moreso than his signature. Darrow was arguably the greatest criminal defense attorney of the 20th century, most famous for the Leopold and Loeb murder trial and the Scopes Monkey trial, though he was a prominent labor organizer and ACLU leader as well. This volume was purchased from Darrow's Chicago estate sale in 1938 after his passing by the father-in-law of the book's most recent owner, economist Peter Grossman. A very collectible first with fascinating provenance. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[American Indians] [Crow] Photographer Unknown
Montana or Wyoming, 1910. Silver gelatin photographs on thick paper mounts, photographs measuring appx. 4 x 5 inches, mounts 8 x 10. Very Good. A series of photographs of Crow, taken circa 1900-1905 by an unknown photographer, possibly acquired at a Wyoming street festival. The images bear some resemblance to the work of Heyn and Rinehart, though we find no record of these images in their respective catalogues. We can guess by the age of the subjects and the silver gelatin prints that these were taken at this time, and they arrived in the same collection as a documented collection of Crow images taken by Burt Buffum in Sheridan, Wyoming, in 1903. The close frame, somewhat elaborate presentation and romantic nature of the images suggest that they could have been printed for sale in Sheridan, where Crow often partook in street festivals in the early part of the 20th century. White Swan - famous for his role as one of the scouts who travelled with George Armstrong Custer - is one of the identified subjects, as well as Little Bear and One Star. One photograph torn, one with a crease, the others very good with some slight fading.

Hi, Here we have a 1910 Original Hardback Wisden, in Good Condition. The gilt is bright to the front board but there are a cuple of marks. Howard and Fields]; [Frank Howard (John F. Martindale)]; [Kaufman and Kaufman]
[New York, Boston, Chicago, and elsewhere, 1910-1926]. Contracts, Typed Letters Signed, Photographs, Playscripts, etc. Itemized description below. Very good. Small archive documenting two separate vaudeville theatrical acts, blackface minstrels Howard and Fields and the "singing and talk" act, Kaufman and Kaufman. Howard and Fields were noted for their two-man minstrel act-sometimes with a straight man-set in a railroad dining car. As a solo minstrel artist, Frank Howard also performed with the Franklin Brothers. A 1909 article on "The Evolution of Minstrelsy" in The Green Book Album magazine praises Frank Howard's singing, songwriting, and musical composition skills: "And how he could sing!! a regular grand opera tenor was Howard-the best the minstrel stage ever knew. He wrote both words and music for such famous song hits as "When the Robins Nest Again," "Only a Pansy Blossom," "I'll Await My Love".and others. Howard's songs netted him over two hundred thousand dollars in royalties. It was the writer's privilege recently to hear Howard sing and his remarkable voice seemed as good as ever. He is now rehearsing a new act entitled "The Last Call For Supper" in which he will be assisted by the Franklin Brothers, two likely young chaps whose voices blend beautifully with his own." A 9-page typescript of The Last Call For Supper is included in the archive and mentions the Franklin Brothers. Contents: ? Two Real Photo Post Cards advertising "Howard and Fields" and "Howard & Fields in The Rag Time Dining Car." The former card shows Fields in blackface; the latter card-a photo-mon … [Click Below for Full Description]

RUSSELL, Bertrand
Published by The People's Suffrage Federation [1910], London. 26pp, [2]. With a final leaf of publisher's advertisements. Stapled, as issued, in original publisher's printed tan wrappers. Extremities a trifle marked and dust-soiled, chipping to edges, pencilled ownership inscription to upper wrapper. Lightly foxed. A rare survival in the original wrappers of the first edition of polymath Bertrand Russell's (1872-1970) seventh published work, a powerfully argued response in favour of women's suffrage, to Albert Venn Dicey's (1835-1922) anti-suffragist work Letters to a friend on votes for women (London, 1909). An ardent supporter of the enfranchisement of women, (he stood for parliament as a women's suffrage candidate at a by-election for the Wimbledon seat in 1907, but was not elected), Russell here suggests that those men who oppose suffrage do so only due to 'the fear that their liberty to act in ways that are injurious to women will be curtailed'. He continues to summarily dismiss the more extreme anti-feminist criticisms of female intellect present both in Dicey's work and indeed the contemporary political culture in general, views most conspicuously espoused by organisations such as The Women's National Anti-suffrage League and the Men's League for Opposing Woman Suffrage (these two bodies would amalgamate in December 1910, six months after the publication of the present pamphlet). His only concern for the political emancipation of women is that more than just the granting of the right to vote will be required, as enfranchised women will enter a system 'which has been … [Click Below for Full Description]

Roué, Auguste
N.d., circa 1910. 4to. 25.5 by 20 cm. 96 pages of bawdy songs, in French, illustrated with color pencil drawings, mostly of ladies and officers, generally humorous, bawdy or risque. Heightening their delight is how they are so deeply rooted in the time period of their creation -- in the dress and styles of the teens, in the feminine physiques idealized, in their conception of the mildly transgressive and naughty. The artwork, although depicting the fashionable and sophisticated, has the charming artlessness of folk art. This is not the product of a trained professional, clearly. Yet never can we not vividly visualize the scenes the artist has worked up. Roué was the headwaiter aboard the Cruiser Battleship La Gloire, and as such he was ideally situated to observe the kinds of people and their behavior that went into his artwork here. Condition: stitching loose in the binding. Some soiling of the boards. Cloth worn at corners. Leaves within with light soiling, minor dog ear-ing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
