Wooster, Ohio, 1910. Oblong quarto. Gray cloth over paper boards measuring 10" x 9" with "In those happy days of yore" and the image of a woman stamped on the front board. Contains 174 sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs affixed to stiff gray paper, the images measuring between 1.5" x 3" to 7" x 9.5" with some captions. A good only photo album with tears and loose pages with very good or better photographs with some tears. A photo album kept by a woman who attended Wooster University in Wooster, Ohio from 1907 until she graduated in 1910. Many of the photos show women around campus posing for the camera and caught being silly in candids. There are dorm room photos with walls covered in pennants and girls huddled together in bed smiling. One photo shows a girl in a silly costume with devil horns and a pitch fork. The women held numerous costume parties where they dressed as Native Americans, pilgrims, and a marching band. Featured throughout the album are numerous picnics and walks through the surrounding woods with oak leaves laid in. An early photo booth style strip of a young woman is featured as well. The woman who compiled the photos was clearly a student in the theater department. One group of photographs shows women who are part of an opera in 1908 dressed in kimonos with fans. A collection of 32 photographs, most 8" x 5.5", show three performances at the Phoenix Playhouse including "The Rivals," "Quality Street," and "Two Gentlemen of Verona." These photos show women acting in all the parts with elaborate scenery. Another section of 18 photos labeled "Senior Play … [Click Below for Full Description]

HERRIMAN, GEORGE
1910. Herriman refers to himself as "Ole Man Herriman," noting he, "is getting better - No! I did not do all that work while I was laid away - its [sic] old stuff they picked out of the morgue and used over again - my junk is so much the same - y'could use it backwards or forwards.nobody would know the difference - that's how come I fooled 'em for ten weeks - you should have known better - aint ya a news paper gal?." He comments on not understanding why Louise gives, "a mug like me so much time - writing long letters.I'm just an excuse - so you can unload about those mesas and sunsets out in that ole pais pintado.a taste of that stuff - sinks you.shux I was more than 1/2 mad at the Doctors for holding me over.if your mind can stand it - try and imagine a kinky headed runt - and four scotty dogs raising hell in a pool of purple shadow.-. Would that make the Navajos sing Coyote." He signs, "Ole Man Herriman," and adds two post scripts initialed, "the first initialed "G. H." In his first PS he writes that this is the "longest letter" he'd ever written and in the second, he writes, "I hate initials," and signed with simply, "G." After Herriman's wife died, he began a relationship with Louise Scher Swinnerton, formerly married to fellow cartoonist and friend Jimmy Swinnerton. Many of the letters between Herriman and Swinnerton were burned by Swinnerton's grandson according to Herriman's biographer. [contact us for source in bh item history] Herriman's reference to "Pais pintado" likely reflects his love for Monument Valley and the Enchanted Mesa in the southwestern U.S. In 1910, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contains 337 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2.5"x 2" and 9.5" x 7" with some captions. Bumped corners and spine ends with tiny tears, else near fine with fine photographs. A photo album featuring a family traveling to Cuba circa 1910 beginning in the summer through the winter. The first few pages of the album are of the family at home and going on camping trips together and occasionally with friends. There are photographs of couples posing together and children playing. Some of the photographs have a double exposure or have been hand cut. The rest of the photographs in the album are of the trip to Cuba. They visit beaches and travel by automobile, boat, or train, taking several pictures next to or on their method of transportation. There are a couple of photographs with one of the girls in the family posing with some young nurses, but most of the photographs show the women in the family dressed very well in fur shawls and decorative hats. The family visits a hat shop and the women are seen wearing different hats and posing in them. They also visit many tobacco and cigar shops in Cuba as well as some other stores and parks one of which is the Christopher Columbus Cemetery. In another set of photographs, one of the women poses out in the snow and next to a frozen lake. In the album there are pictures of a festival going through the town with floats and women dressed in gowns with ornamental headdresses. BARNABEE, Henry Clay
[Boston and elsewhere], 1910. Hardcover. Very good +. Quarto. About 40 double-sided scrapbook leaves, nearly all used. Binding worn, with a brown cloth tape reinforcement at the spine. Internally intact and rather clean. Overall contents in very good or better condition. Scrapbook of Henry Clay Barnabee, one of the 19th century's great operatic comedians. The contents are mostly personal visiting cards with notes from the subjects, along with similar ephemera (telegrams, autograph letters, and the like). Just about every page is packed to the edge with material. Signed large cabinet photograph of Barnabee laid in. Barnabee was well-known in his time, particularly for playing the role of the Sheriff of Nottingham in the 1891 London production of Robin Hood (this role is mentioned in at least one place by Barnabee in his own hand within the scrapbook). A rich personal archive of Barnabee's, which no doubt will reveal to any scholar of his work the nature of his relationships to some other artists of his era included within.

The spines have a golden titles - most are very clear and very readable - several volumes show some rubbing and the book volume is somewhat difficult to read. 1910. Black cloth photo album. Oblong. Measuring 10" x 7.25". Album contains 21 affixed sepia toned photographs, along with an additional 15 black and white, sepia, or silver print photos laid in, three negatives of a woman on a typewriter, and the personalized handkerchief of Mary A. Pettit. All photos are between 2.5" x 2" and 5.5" x 3.5" and are very good or better with slight edgewear and some creasing. Album has worn corners and rubbing. A prosaic album displaying images of home life, probably from the first decade of the 20th Century, and mostly centered on the activities of women. From the back marks (of the photo studios Bailey and Myers-Cope Company) which appear on some of the loose photographs it can be presumed the families lived somewhere in proximity to Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia. Many of the scenes are of women in fancy hats or perambulating with parasols. Also making an appearance are the occasional men and children, most of whom are posing for portraits, one of a man pretending to drive a car. Among the photos are three negatives of a woman on a typewriter with what appears to be an early Dictaphone-like device. A pleasing album of carefree upper middle class people enjoying the decades before World War and financial hardship would upset the bucolic pace of American life. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Hi, Here we have a 1910 Original Hardback Wisden, in Good Condition. The gilt is bright to the front board but there are a cuple of marks. The spine cloth is very dark and gilt is good but a bit darkened. Internally there is a slight weakness to the hinges, no major concern but a small amount of mesh can be seen at the rear, but otherwise very nice inside with great photoplate. A fabulous price.

RACKHAM, Arthur; WAGNER, Richard
Heinemann 1911, 1910. First editions, two volumes. 4to. Tan buckram with gilt lettering and illustration to cover and spine. Loosely inserted is the notice for the Leicester Galleries exhibition held in October and November 1910, where the watercolours for this book were offered for sale. A very good set indeed, bright and attractive, with occasional scattered foxing. The first volume has 34 colour plates and the second has 30 colour plates. All the colour illustrations are mounted onto brown art paper under captioned tissue guards. Pictorial endpapers and numerous line drawings in the text. Wagner's interpretation of the Norse Sagas is a perfect vehicle for Rackham's glorious artwork, and in these two books Rackham chose to create something on a grand and prestigious scale. C.S. Lewis wrote "His pictures, which seemed to me then to be the very music made visible, plunged me a few fathoms deeper into my delight. I have seldom coveted anything as I coveted that book" [Surprised by Joy]. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Shakespeare, William [Hugh Thomson, illustrator]
New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1910. First Thus. Very Good +. Signed limited edition, this being 291 of 350 with Thomson's signature on the limitation page. Original vellum binding with gilt to front board and spine; ribbon ties still present. Top edge gilt. Light soiling to boards and spine; bottom corners gently bumped. Hinges previously repaired with Japanese paper, slightly foxed; tender but overall holding well. Internally a clean and pleasing copy, featuring 39 beautiful colored plates by famed illustrator Hugh Thomson.Thomson, famed at the turn of the century for illustrating works by luminaries including Jane Austen and William Shakespeare, provides his lovely renderings of Falstaff's comedic adventures. First published in 1602, The Merry Wives of Windsor was Shakespeare's response to public calls that he create a play casting the humorous history-play figure Falstaff as its protagonist. Here, rather than serving as the slapstick and bawdy companion to Prince Hal, he takes center stage in a comedic structure, pursuing two wealthy married women in an attempt to alleviate his own penury. Thomson's gorgeously colored illustrations capture the humor of Shakespeare's play in a lovely, late-Pre-Raphaelite style. Very Good +.[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Dublin: Maunsel & Company, Ltd., , 1910. With a very scarce signature and original sketch by Maud Gonne Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles in white to spine and with celtic swans design to front board. Housed in a dark blue cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. 4 tipped-in colour plates, all but one heightened in gilt and silver, head- and tail-pieces, a few decorative opening initials, all by Maud Gonne. Spine rubbed and faded, light wear to extremities, a few repairs to spine and rear board, small loss to lower rear corner and related nibble marks to pp. 129-173; a fair, internally clean, copy. First edition, first impression, signed by the illustrator on the title page, and with an original initialled drawing in black ink on the front free endpaper (and expanded version of the ornament printed on p. 20.) Edith Maud Gonne (1866-1953) was one of the boldest figures of the Irish Literary Revival; a suffragette and artist, she remains best known as W. B. Yeats's muse and the subject of over 80 of his poems. They were "possibly briefly engaged, and in November 1891 she joined the Order of the Golden Dawn, the magical order to which he belonged, as 'Per Ignem ad Lucem' [Through Fire to the Light]" (ODNB). Gonne was also an Irish nationalist whose political commitment was deemed "paradoxical: born in England of English parents she was Irish by passionate identification and remote descent" (ibid.). In 1900, she was a founding member of the revolutionary women's society Inghinidhe na hEireann [Daughters of Ireland], which included writers Alice Furlong, Ethna Carbery an … [Click Below for Full Description]
