        Die Fläche

Anton Schroll, Vienna 1910 - Two volumes in three small quarto portfolios. 192; 32pp. First volume loose and second volume accordionfold, as issued. Full run of Die Fläche, or The Surface, a periodical produced by members of the Wiener Werkstätte to showcase and disseminate the work created in the Workshops. The periodical is a "Musterbuch," or pattern book, and is composed entirely of reproductions of designs intended for practical application on all "surfaces," including poster art, books, wallpaper, textiles, stained glass, inlay, embroidery, monograms, business cards, and costume jewelry. The two volumes contain a total of 124 pages of designs, all printed in bright colors via algraphy, or aluminum plate lithography. The designs are by notables such as Gustav Klimt, Johanna Hollmann, Minka Podhajska, Max Benirschke, Moritz Jung, and more. Variously edited by Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Alfred Roller, Bertold Löffler, and others, the two undated volumes were published to "manifest [the Viennese style] in its most austere and purified form." The Wiener Werkstätte was founded in 1903 by Hoffmann and Moser out of the Vienna Secession, which was a reaction against the conservative aesthetics of the Association of Austrian Artists at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Hoffmann and Moser were inspired by contemporary European design, such as the Glasgow School in Scotland and Art Nouveau in France. They also appreciated the emphasis on the applied arts found in the workshops of William Morris. They established the Wiener Werkstätte as a continuation of Morris' enterprise, and Die Fläche is a reflection of the skills taught and practiced in the Workshops. One of the most beautiful printed objects to come out of the Wiener Werkstätte, a complete series of this periodical is extremely rare to find. No complete copies have been sold at auction in twenty-five years. First portfolio bound in original cloth-backed paper-covered boards, which are rubbed at edges and waterstained on back cover; second volume portfolios rebound in modern cloth-backed boards, with original printed upper cover pasted on. Housed in two modern boxes. Bookplates. (Meggs' History of Graphic Design; Design, Vienna, 1890s-1930s plate 104). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Photographic Portrait, caption on verso]: "Holt Collier, with the gun given him by Theo. Roosevelt after Holt killed the bear Roosevelt was supposed to shoot at Bear Lake, La., Bear hunt"

[Vicksburg, Mississippi, 1910. Very Good. Three-quarter length portrait photograph. Measuring 5.5" x 9". Paper remnants on the verso where it was removed from an album or mount, moderate foxing on the image, very good. Striking and handsome image of Collier in hunting clothes and cap, with the aforementioned gun under his arm and a powder horn strung from his neck. Holt Collier (circa 1850-1920) was born into slavery and was a lifelong Mississippi resident. This photograph was probably taken in Vicksburg, just across the Mississippi River from Tallulah, Louisiana near Bear Lakes. A legendary bear hunter, Collier was alleged to have dispatched over 3000 bears in a lifetime of hunting. A brief account of his story is found in Memoirs of Henry Tillinghurst Iveys, 1837-1923 (published 1954). A striking portrait of the aging hunter and former slave.

African Game Trails: An Account of the African Wanderings of an American Hunter-Naturalist.

Charles Scribner's Sons, 1910., New York: - 8vo. xv, 529 pp. Frontispiece, 49 illustrations, index. Gilt-stamped brown cloth; front corner bumped, spine faded. SIGNED BY ROOSEVELT on removable White House letterhead cardstock in tipped-in cellophane sleeve verso frontispiece. Bookplate of Charles A. Gianini. Near fine. FIRST TRADE EDITION of Roosevelt's iconic classic on big game hunting. "Hunting in the Pleistocene wild, Roosevelt believed, let him bravely face down the 'hideous horror' of the eat-or-be-eaten struggle for survival which his Stone Age ancestors had faced. Here he could experience the pure, original emotions of primal masculinity. Like G. Stanley Hall, TR found in the violence of the primitive a safe way to relive the 'hot life of feeling' which civilization had demoted as 'unmanly.' "Roosevelt had personally killed 269 mammals during his safari, including thirteen rhinos, eight elephants, seven hippos, seven giraffes, and nine lions. At the end of African Game Trails, he lists each kill, modestly insisting 'we did not kill a tenth, nor a hundredth part, of what we might have killed had we been willing'" (Bederman, p. 211). "With his son Kermit on the 1909 safari, Roosevelt shot and collected a great deal of game for the Smithsonian and National Museums and was a keen recorded and observer of everything he saw. His account of the safari has its share of the exciting, dangerous moments expected in this type of hunting, but the…work is rich with descriptions of the quieter pleasures of safari life, from campfire scenes to reflections on bird-watching" (Underwood, pp. xvii-xviii). Bederman, Gail. Manliness and Civilization: A Cultural History of Gender and Race in the United States, 1880-1917. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1996; Underwood, Lamar. Theodore Roosevelt on Hunting. Guilford, CT: Globe Pequot, 2006. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

African Game Trails An Account of the African Wanderings of an American Hunter-Naturalist

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1910. First trade edition of Theodore Roosevelt's classic work. Octavo, original color pictorial green cloth lettered in gilt, photogravure frontispiece, illustrated from photographs, drawings. In near fine condition with light rubbing and wear to the extremities, hinges repaired. "One of the most famous of all big-game hunting epics, this, with its larger than life sportsmen, was almost continuously in print until the 1930s. In British East Africa, Roosevelt hunted lion and plains game on the Kapiti Plains, while, in the Bondoni hill country, he collected rhinoceros and giraffe. On Juja Farm, his son Kermit faced leopard, while Teddy bagged rhino and hippopotamus. On the Kamiti River, buffalo were taken. Near the Sotik, additional rhino and lion were hunted, with elephant bagged near Mt. Kenia. On the Guaso Nyiro, giraffe and a variety of plains game were shot. Further adventures included hunting elephant near Lake Nyanza, rhino and plains game in the Lado, and eland on the Nile. Roosevelt's total bag was enormous even by the liberal standards of that era" (Czech, 138-39).
