         Judaica

, c. 1910. c. 1910. Printed document, one page, 8.75" x 11.25", museum quality framed to 15.5" x 23.5", ca. 1910, printed in Hebrew, entitling the recipient to a year of all blessings. With Tefilat Haderekh (the Traveler's Prayer) and other relevant Hebrew quotations. Color illustrated on paper with American, Jewish and nautical images, including the Statue of Liberty, a ship with three American flags, and a Star of David enclosing a shofar set in a life preserver. The poster was published circa 1910 by Keren Kayement (as a fundraising project for Palestine). It was purchased by newly settled Jews in America to be sent to their relatives in oppressed countries to encourage them to migrate to a land of freedom and opportunity. The Statute of Liberty at the center, beckons the immigrant. Above, a greeting says, "New year - free boat ticket". On either side is T'flias Haderech. At right, a train, and at left a factory. At the bottom center is an ocean liner with the American flag in the front and a faint sign of the Jewish flag at rear. A panel blue border is draped with symbols of the Jewish flag. In a circle at the top right is the Mogen David and Zion and in a circle at the top left an open book with the words in Hebrew, "Sefer Hazohov L'Keren Kayment" an Invitation to come to America - but not to forget Zion.Auction records indicate only two examples of this broadside having been offered since 1992. Both of which did not include the rare Bank of Heaven certificate good for 365 days of "Health, Wealth & Happiness." Both extremely fine and ideal for presentation or display.

Der Decor: Zierungen für's Kunstgewerbe. 1. Serie. 48 künstlerische Facsimile Aquarelle

[Fr. Wolfrum & Co. Wien/Leipzig]; Obras cientificas y artisticas Sucesor de J. M. Fabre, [Wien/Leipzig]; Barcelona 1910 - Folio (19 x 14 3/4"). [1] leaf (Title), [48] loose leaves (Plates), as issued. Original 3/4 olive cloth over printed paper covered portfolio. String ties. This early 20th century Viennese Art Nouveau portfolio is complete with its 48 color plates splendidly reproduced in offset, and which are facsimiles of original watercolors depicting several designs of the famous Viennese School. The designs shown are templates for fabric patterns, jewelry, picture frames, furniture, table lamps, glass, vases, door handles and door locks, plates, wallpapers, fireplace mounts, windows, menu cards, book covers, and numerous other ornaments. The plates are mostly unsigned except for three which are signed by the following Viennese artists: Gottlieb Theodore von Kempf* (Plates 28 and 38), and Raimund Germela** (Plate 32). Pasted at verso of each plate is a 1 1/2 x 4 1/2" printed label indicating the original publisher (Fr. Wolfrum & Co. in Wien/Leipzig), the title of the portfolio, and the number of the plate. The label is missing at verso of plates Nos. 8, 9, 12, and 23.Original Art Nouveau watercolor at verso of plate 27 (unsigned). The unsigned watercolor measures 7 x 15 1/2" and depicts a woman in a long purple dress, holding two floral swags with three roses at each extremity. Right behind her is a white, silver and brown ornamental circle. In the background, the sun appears to be setting on hilly shores. The watercolor seems unfinished as the woman's face does not have any features, and the details within the ornamental circle are clearly not defined. Each color illustration (size slightly varying, but mostly 12 1/2 x 8 1/2") is mounted on a green cardboard (size: 18 1/2 x 14 1/2"). Stamp of the Országos Magyar Királyi Iparmüvészeti Iskola (National Hungarian School of Applied Arts) at lower margin of plates 7, 21, and 32.Publishing label of "Obras cientificas y artisticas Sucesor de J. M. Fabre in Barcelona" pasted on front cover and title page, thus covering the original publisher (Fr. Wolfrum & Co. in Wien/Leipzig). Portfolio, rubbed, stained, with front cover detached but present. Some foxing along edges of leaves (not affecting images). Title in German. Portfolio in overall poor, interior in good to very good, images in very good condition. * Gottlieb Theodor von Kempf (1871-1964) is known as a painter and illustrator. From 1888 to 1896 he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Julius Victor Berger, Leopold Karl Müller, Josef Matthias von Trenkwald and August Eisenmenger, making numerous study trips to Rome and Paris. He is best known for his illustrations for the Meggendorfer Blatter and Gerlach's Allegorien portfolio. He exhibited at the Vienna Künstlerhaus , in the Vienna Secession and in Munich and Dresden. For his artistic work Kempf was awarded the Great Golden Medal of Honor of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, the Master Award of the City of Vienna, the forest Müller Award and the National Award. (From the Vienna Secession Gallery).** Raimund Germela (1868-1945) studied at the Academy of Arts in Vienna and was a pupil of Leopold Carl Müller and Josef Matyas Trenkwald. He continued his studies in Paris, Munich, England and Italy. In 1898, he settled in Vienna and became a member of the Hagenbund and the Wiener Künstlerhaus. Germela's versatile oeuvre includes interiors, genre paintings and scenes of urban life. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

         Recueil de Poèmes ].

s.l.n.d. (c.1910?). "His music, impressionistic with an oriental flavor, remains largely unpublished. He evolved a theory of 'Chromophonie' (color in movement) and wrote several papers on the subject in 'La Revue Musicale' and other publications" (Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

         Yoshiwara, a Nightless Quarter.

Ogawa Kazumasa Shashinkan, Tokyo 1910 - First edition. Oblong octavo. 10 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches). One leaf of description (in English) and 18 hand-colored collotypes on crepe paper. Publisher's string-bound decorative crepe paper wrappers with hand-colored designs and lettering. An excellent copy.Created by, arguably, the foremost Japanese photographer of the time this book details the daily life in the red light district (Yoshiwara) in Tokyo (then called Edo). The Yoshiwara was home to some 1,750 women in the 18th century, with records of some 3,000 women from all over Japan at one time. The area had over 9,000 women in 1893, many of whom suffered from syphilis. These girls were often indentured to the brothels by their parents between the ages of about seven to twelve. If she was lucky, she would become an apprentice to a high-ranking courtesan. Not only a center of prostitution and related activities, the Yoshiwara was also a center of cultural production. While most novelists, artists, publishers and the like made their homes in the commercial districts closer to the center of the city, some lived in or just outside the Yoshiwara, taking the environment as a muse, and the Yoshiwara customers and residents as patrons. In 1868, six other districts were made licensed, and in 1875, the Yoshiwara, and the brothels, teahouses, and prostitutes of a number of other areas came under the jurisdiction of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. By this time, the Yoshiwara was very much only a shadow of its former self, but it lingered on, and was not formally shut down by the government until 1958.Ogawa Kazumasa (aka Kazuma or Isshin) (1860-1929) is considered a pioneer in the development of photography and photomechanical printing in Japan. In 1882~4 Ogawa studied portrait photography and the dry plate process in Boston. He also studied collotype printing with the Albert Type Company. On his return to Japan in 1884 he opened a photographic studio in Tokyo. In 1888 he established Tsukiji Kampan Seizo Kaisha (Tsukiji Dry Plate Manufacturing Company) which manufactured dry plates for use by photographers. This business failed after several years in operation. In 1889 he started Japan's first photoengraving business, the Ogawa Shashin Seihan-jo (Ogawa Photograph (Plate) Making Shop). This is sometimes referred to as the K. Ogawa printing factory, No. 11, Yanagimara, Tokyo. This business started with manufacturing half-tone plates and by 1894 added collotype printing. Ogawa published/distributed under the name Ogawa Shashin Seihan-jo and Ogawa Shuppanbu. In the early 1890s, Ogawa incorporated the copper type printing process with the collotype process thereby making it possible to print descriptive titles on the same plate with the collotype image" (G. C. Baxley). This is probably Ogawa's scarcest title with only one copy located by OCLC (National Diet Library in Tokyo) and only one copy appearing at auction.

Notes en vue de la préparation de: Constantinople Moderne. Ses Monuments, ses Curiosités, ses habitans.

Istanbul, 1899 to ca. 1910. - 4to. French ms. on paper. 88 ff. (including some 30 blanks) and ca. 60 inlaid leaves of additional notes. Contemp. cloth with handwritten label on upper cover: "Notes personnelles à M. Sellie (secrètes)". A manuscript for an unrealized publication about the city of Istanbul, written in well legible script throughout by León Sellié, director of the "Compagnie des Eaux de Constantinople". The author began by compiling a rich array of facts on numerous subjects, such as the French embassy, Turkish administration, Ottoman banks, dogs, the climate, dancing, servants, translators, pregnant women, Ferikoy district, the government, French charitable organisations, the press, the police, religion, theatre and toilets ("ambassade de France, administration turque, banques ottomanes, chiens, climat, danses, domestiques, drogmans, femmes enceintes, Ferikeny, gouvernement, oeuvres charitables françaises, presse, police, religion, théâtre, toilettes"). These alphabetically arranged catchwords are increasingly interspersed with additions and insertions, many dated and often in the manner of a diary, including notes of converstaions, personal opinions, and anecdotes. Among other episodes, Sellié mentions the Lorando-Tubini affair that led to the Ottoman-French conflict and the occupation of Mitylene, or the Baghdad railway, which he considers a grave political mistake ("une lourde faute politique"). - Slightly browned, as commensurate with age; well-preserved altogether. A trove of information on politics, society, culture, and history of the Ottoman Empire at the turn of the century. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Mountainous landscape with Middle Eastern and classical Roman ruins, 6 shepherds with their flocks, several figures riding dromedaries and one riding a donkey, (date?) palms, lakes, etc.

[Palestine?, ca. 1910?]. - An enormous panoramic view drawn in coloured gouaches on a single, continuous roll of unwatermarked wove paper (70 x 583 cm), the drawing running to the edges of the paper. Rolled and stored in a cardboard tube. A panoramic view of what appears to be a fantasy Middle Eastern landscape, with spectacular mountains in the background, a body of water near each end, and a wide variety of buildings and ruins, some clearly classical Roman and others Middle Eastern. The combination of classical Roman architecture with dromedaries and other Middle Eastern features places it very likely in Palestine, but we have not been able to identify specific buildings. The most distinctive ruin, a round Roman temple with five columns on the viewer's side (perhaps a third of the circle), an entablature above them and a vertical base below them, looks more like the Temple of the Vesta at Tivoli than like any known temple in the Middle East (the columns are not rendered in sufficient detail to determine their order, but they are almost certainly not Ionic and are probably Corinthian). There are also classical Roman aqueducts. The six shepherds with their flocks all wear broad-brimmed hats and have staffs, and two are blowing long, slightly curved horns. Several additional figures with broad-brimmed hats and staffs might be pilgrims, one together with what is presumably his wife. - With a 33 cm tear into the left edge, slightly affecting a mountain and the top of a tree, a few insignificant and much smaller tears and with pin holes about 1 cm from the edges from mounting on a wall, but otherwise in very good condition and with the colours fresh and bright. A spectacular panoramic view of the Middle East, including many classical Roman ruins.

Octavo, original cloth, gilt top edge, photogravure frontispiece, illustrated, 48 plates, map of Roosevelt's route and hunting trips in Africa. In near fine condition with light rubbing and wear to the extremities. "One of the most famous of all big-game hunting epics, this, with its larger than life sportsmen, was almost continuously in print until the 1930s. In British East Africa, Roosevelt hunted lion and plains game on the Kapiti Plains, while, in the Bondoni hill country, he collected rhinoceros and giraffe. On Juja Farm, his son Kermit faced leopard, while Teddy bagged rhino and hippopotamus. On the Kamiti River, buffalo were taken. Near the Sotik, additional rhino and lion were hunted, with elephant bagged near Mt. Kenia. On the Guaso Nyiro, giraffe and a variety of plains game were shot. Further adventures included hunting elephant near Lake Nyanza, rhino and plains game in the Lado, and eland on the Nile. Roosevelt’s total bag was enormous even by the liberal standards of that era" (Czech, 138-39). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
