Roald Amundsen's "The North West passage"; being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship "Gjöa" 1903-1907.

      E. P. Dutton, New York 1908 - 24 cm; 2 volumes. Frontispieces, 3 color maps, two of them folding; 139 black-and-white photo illustrations. Publisher’s original black cloth-covered boards stamped in gilt with a map tracing Amundsen's route from Norway to Nome, Alaska (different from the design on the British edition). Top edge gilt. Very minor wear at spine edges, else fresh, crisp, and blemish-free. References: Tourville, 227 (London edition); Arctic Bibliography # 402 (London ed.). First American edition (from the London plates) of the first English translation of Amundsen's account of the three-year journey through the Northwest Passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific (a goal that had eluded explorers for centuries).         Album di fotografie originali 1907-1911

Salisbury Hall, St. Albans, 1908. ALS. This 30 August 1908 holograph letter is from Winston S. Churchill to British newspaper magnate Viscount Northcliffe. The letter is noteworthy in several respects, reflecting Churchill's frictional association with Northcliffe and his remarkably candid frustrations with the press, and referencing his impending wedding. The letter is inked on a sheet of stationery printed “SALISBURY HALL, ST ALBANS.” (Churchill's mother's home) folded into four panels measuring 8 x 5.06 inches (20.3 x 12.9 cm). Churchill's 229-word, 50-line handwritten missive is inked in black on all four panels, marked “Private” at the upper left of the first panel and dated “30 Aug 1908”. Churchill opens thanking Northcliffe for a gift – “a token of peace & amity from you…” The substantial portion of the letter is devoted to a pained and blunt critique of the role of the press in political discourse: “…if I knew beforehand that I was going to be decently reported I would take pains to produce something worth printing. But what always seems to happen is that when I have something important to say no one takes any notice of it, & when I deliver an ordinary party impromptu it is reported in the first person. The uncertainty about reporting prevents politicians from taking trouble about speeches. In consequence they deliver perfectly idiotic speeches & the newspapers are still further choked off reporting them. You tell your ‘old paper' to report me verbatim at Dundee, at Manchester, & at Newcastle… & I will see that they get good copy... The ‘young paper' is taking a vy friendly interest in the wedding… good luck to you in your travels, & once more many thanks for your gift. Yours vy sincerely, Winston S. Churchill” The ‘old paper' may be the Daily Mail, founded by Harmsworth in 1896. The ‘young paper' is likely The Times, which Northcliffe bought in 1908 and which reported Churchill's marriage plans on 15 August. The gift from Northcliffe is unknown to us, but plausibly wedding-related. References to Dundee, Manchester, and Newcastle are to a series of Churchill speeches beginning in October. Condition of the letter is near fine, with a single horizontal fold from mailing, only slight soiling, and the ghost of an erased “98” inked at the head of the first panel. We previously noted the same notation at the head of a 1905 letter from Churchill to Northcliffe. Notably, 1898 is the year in which Churchill met and befriended Northcliffe. 1908 was politically and personally eventful for Churchill. Just 34, Churchill joined the Cabinet as President of the Board of Trade and was defeated in the subsequent 24 April Manchester by-election – a defeat over which Churchill was “particularly incensed with the Harmsworth Press's Manchester Courier against whom he initiated a libel action” which resulted in a Courier apology and retraction. (Gilbert, Vol. II, p.258) Swiftly thereafter, on 9 May, Churchill was elected M.P. for Dundee. On 11 August, he proposed to Clementine Hozier, whom he married on 12 September. Alfred Charles William Harmsworth, Viscount Northcliffe (1865-1922) was a close associate of Churchill (in turns as vigorous booster and vehement opponent) for nearly a quarter of a century. Churchill and Northcliffe would serve together in the Government during the First World War. Self-made, Northcliffe rose from freelance journalist to head the world's largest periodical publishing empire, which at its peak included the London Evening News, Sunday Dispatch, Daily Mirror, and The Times. Not content to report news, Northcliffe assertively influenced public affairs. Northcliffe was as much the megalomaniac his papers accused Churchill of being. Both men were ambitious, powerful, impatient, and inconsiderate when pursuing an agenda. But where Churchill had an inclination to gracious conciliation in common cause, Northcliffe was perhaps too used to seeing his own opinions in print to avoid condescension and caustic criticism.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908. First edition. First and only issue. Illustrated profusely throughout. 8vo, publisher's original bright red cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and pictorially decorated in colours across the whole of the upper cover. xiii, 226, 16 ads. A very bright and handsome copy, the text with just a light bit of the inevitable foxing to which the title is prone, much less than is typically fencourntered . The cloth is especially fresh with just a bit of very minor age mellowing. SCARCE FIRST EDITION IN VERY PLEASING CONDITION, AND A VERY IMPORTANT WORK OF AFRICANA FROM WINSTON CHURCHILL'S EARLY ADVENTUROUS YEARS. Winston Churchill is, of course, chiefly known for his position as England's Prime Minister during World War II and his political writings, but in his earlier days his love for traveling and big game hunting had the greatest command of his pen. He offers this book, "a continuous narrative of the lighter side of what was to me a very delightful and inspiring journey," in hopes that the British with recently-acquired estates in Africa would have their interest piqued and make the most of what Africa had to offer. It is the companion volume to his earlier African writings, THE STORY OF THE MALAKAND FIELD FORCE, THE RIVER WAR, and LONDON TO LADYSMITH. Such bright copies of this book are especially elusive because the pictorial images on the front cover were nearly always effected by rubbing. Another delightful installment of Churchill's African adventures.

Photo album document a University of Michigan student "County Fair "

Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1908. Album. Very good. The album measures approximately 10.5" x 13" and contains 16 photographs; 15 are affixed to its pages, and one is laid in. Five of the photos measure 7.5" x 9"; the remainder 5" x 8". Everything is in very nice shape. This is an excellent collection of large images that document a student-run parade and "County Fair" carnival in Ann Arbor that was held on May 1-2, 1908, which the Detroit Free Press called a "Mad Riot of Fun." These fairs were held every three years by the Michigan Union, which was a male-only organization, although 50 different student organizations participated including sororities. All of the participating clubs competed to win a silver cup. A parade was held during the day, and at night the gym was turned into a carnival, which the newspaper reported was replete with "the cries of barkers . . . scores of oddly dressed people . . . and the presence of real girls who act as newsboys and confectioner." This album includes images of a band with members dressed as hobos and prisoners as well as a group of men dressed as suffragists with signs mocking the movement. Other photos include a shot showing fraternity men dressed in drag and view of the "Dip-Dip" ride and "Bosco's Jungle." Several photos are signed in the negative by Alfred S. Lyndon, a prolific Ann Arbor photographer whose shop was located at the corner of North University and State Street. Funds raised at the carnival were intended to fund a modest "Union Club House" for men only as the college's women already had a social center within the Barbour Gymnasium. Plans for the Union Club House eventually morphed into the construction of the huge Union Building on State Street that is heavily used today by all students.

Correspondence de l'oncle Charles. Bound collection of letters

1908. Depéret, Charles (1854-1929). Correspondance de l'Oncle Charles (spine title). Bound collection of circa 150 autograph letters / postcards signed, many with postmarked covers, to his sister Louise and brother-in-law Dr. Michel-Félix-Antoine Salčtes. 582pp. total (numbered by hand in red ink). V.p., 1885-1908. 214 x 147 mm. Early 20th century three-quarter morocco, gilt-lettered spine, marbled boards, minor wear at spine and edges. Fore-edges a bit frayed but very good. Voluminous collection of correspondence from noted French geologist and paleontologist Charles Depéret, dean for 33 years of the Faculté des Sciences at Lyon and author of nearly 300 works on geology, paleontology and archeology, including the classic monograph "Les terrains tertiaries de la Bresse" (1893; written with F. Delafond), and Les transformations du monde animal (1907), a work that "clearly and accurately explains the great problems of paleontology" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). In 1892, based on his stratigraphic research, Depéret introduced the Burdiglian Stage of the Lower Miocene, spanning the time between 20.43 - 15.97 million years ago. Depéret also known for "Depéret's Rule" of progressive evolutionary specialization, stating that when a population group starts to specialize it can only specialize further and never return to a more generalized state. All the letters in this volume were written to Depéret's sister, Louise, and her husband, Dr. Félix Salčtes, physician and author of Conférences pratiques sur les premiers soins ŕ donner aux blesses (1899); it was their son, Paul Louis Jacques Salčtes, who had the letters bound in the present volume under the title "Correspondance de l'Oncle Charles." The well-organized letters include references to Depéret's work and his travels in Europe and America for research or to attend scientific conferences.

Letter [to my fellow workers] accompanying the account of donations received for work amongst the poor during 1872 [-1908]. 30 parts in one volume

1908. Hill, Octavia (1838-1912). Letter [to my fellow workers] accompanying the account of donations received for work amongst the poor during 1872 [-1908]. 30 parts in one volume. London: V.p., 1873-1909. 177 x 125 mm. Original limp calf, gilt-lettered spine, some wear at edges and hinges, front hinge cracked but sound. Very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Hill on the title of the first part: "For Miss Sunderland with sincere gratitude for her seven years help from Octavia Hill 1909." Several parts bear the signature or annotations of Miranda Hill (1836-1910), Octavia Hill's sister and fellow social reformer. First Book-Form Edition, bound up from the original parts, of Hill's privately printed quasi-annual reports detailing her work to alleviate poverty and improve the living conditions of England's urban poor. The recipient of this copy was most likely Joan Sunderland, who worked with Hill and later became a manager of working-class property in London. Several of the parts bear the signature or annotations of Hill's sister Miranda, founder of the influential Kyrlie Society, whose mission was to provide the poor with art, books and open spaces. Octavia Hill, the famous English social reformer, was a major force behind the development of adequate housing for Britain's working poor and unemployed, who for the most part lived in cold, crowded and disease-ridden city slums. In 1865, with financial help from John Ruskin, Hill began acquiring and improving properties in London to rent to low-income families; by 1874 she had fifteen housing schemes under her management, serving around 3000 tenants. Hill employed female rent collectors and housing managers who acted as early social workers, establishing personal connections with each tenant and making sure that their residences were properly maintained. She also set up tenants' associations, after-school clubs for children and other organizations to improve tenant welfare. In the 1870s Hill expanded her efforts to include the preservation of accessible open spaces in England's cities, working with her sister Miranda to found the Kyrlie Society to "bring beauty home to the poor." In the 1880s she helped to set up the Commons Preservation Society (now the Open Space Society), and in 1893 she became one of the three founders of Britain's National Trust. The "Letters" in our volume cover the years 1872, 1875, 1877-81, 1884-85 jointly, and 1887-1908. The volume also includes two articles by Hill: "Management of houses for the poor," following the "Letter" for 1896; and "Housing difficulties: Management versus reconstruction," following the "Letter" for 1904. OCLC records a volume identical to the one we are offering, so it appears that ours is complete as issued.

        My African Journey

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1908. First edition of this early Churchill travelogue. Octavo, original red cloth, with three full-page maps and over 60 photographs. In near fine condition with a touch of rubbing. A very nice example. As undersecretary of State for the Colonies in 1907, Winston Churchill traveled to Africa on a tour of inspection. He "saw the advantages of producing a travelogue on Britain's valuable possessions in East Africa. Among these, Churchill waxes most eloquent on Uganda, which he calls 'a pearl" (Langworth, 80). My African Journey "includes photographs allegedly taken by Churchill, the only such appearance in the canon; the text is important because it shows Churchill raising prescient questions involving the betterment of the East African population" (Langworth, 80).         Baki's Dîwan Ghazalijjât nach den Handschriften von Leiden, Leipzig, München und Wien herausgegeben, I-II [TWO VOLUMES]

Leiden, Buchhandlung und Druckerei vormals E. J. Brill, 1908-11.. Two volumes bound in one. Pp. 304; lxxv, 306-666. Text in Ottoman Turkish in Arabic script. Hardcover, bound in blue full cloth with the original printed wrappers and spine nicely reproduced on special paper and very neatly laid-down. Original printed stiff wrappers of both volumes are bound-in. In fine condition. Handsome copy in excellent state of preservation. ~ First edition. Extremely rare. The scientific study of Turkey and its history and culture in Czech lands dates back to the 19th century. Founders of this branch of "Oriental studies" were Max Grünert (1849-1929), Jaromír Bretislav Kosut (1854-1880), but especially their luminary student Rudolf Dvorák (1860-1920). Dvorák finished his doctoral studies in Leipzig and became a professor of Oriental philology at the Charles University in Prague. He is well known for his critical edition of the poetic work of the 16th-Century poet Baki (1526-1600), the greatest ghazal writer of Turkish literature whose ghazals were "minutely tooled with the care of a jeweller". Dvorák's work on Baki's Diwan is presented here in its completeness in the very rare first edition, one of Brill's pioneering works on the subject. For the evaluation of Dvorák's translations see Ludek Hrebícek, "Preklady Rudolfa Dvoráka z turectiny", 1961. A complete bibliography of Dvorák's work can be found in "Archiv Orientální" 28/1960.

Album of 34 original silver gelatin prints taken during a Baltic cruise, including 12 Russian scenes.

London: Fradelle & Young,, c. 1908. Quarto (277 x 210 mm). Photographer's original padded album of black grained skiver, spine with five raised bands, lettered on front cover "A Cruise on the 'Dunottar Castle'", gilt edges, gilt roll tool turn-ins, white moiré endpapers. 34 original silver gelatin prints (measuring between 240 x 190 and 105 x 150 mm, each image with holograph caption), mounted on heavy stock card, green cloth hinges. Superficial split to front joint (board firm and sound), a little wear to extremities of spine and corners, periphery of mount cards toned; overall in very good condition, the prints of excellent quality. Highly appealing luxury photograph album of a cultural cruise to the Baltic, including 11 scenes in St. Petersburg (8) and Moscow (3), the fine silver gelatin prints displaying the characteristic rich tonal range associated with the process, with subtle shadowing and remarkably crisp detail. This cruise took in Copenhagen (6), Sweden (6 of Wisby, 3 of Stockholm) and Danzig (7); the album concludes with a group portrait (not captioned), presumably of the tour party. The St. Petersburg views comprise the Winter Palace, St. Isaac's Cathedral, the l'Etat majeur (General Staff building), Peter the Great's cottage, a canal with barges moored, the Hermitage, the Nicholas Bridge, and the Church of the Resurrection. The three Moscow images are of St. Basil's Cathedral, the Kremlin (photographed from across the Moskva on the Sofiskaya Embankment), and the Spass Gate; there is also a fine image of a droshky waiting at the kerb, the driver sporting a low crowned top hat. The views of Danzig are also particularly engaging, and include the harbor, a bustling street scene at the City Gate, and the Rathaus. The photographic studio of Fradelle & Young was successor to the business established by Albert Eugene Fradelle in the 1860s. In 1872 Fradelle went into partnership with William Shury Marshall, as Fradelle & Marshall, and maintained two West End studios. This concern went bankrupt in 1877 but was resurrected by Albert Young around 1884, under the name Fradelle & Young. Company advertisements in Sir Henry Lunn's How to Visit Northern Europe: A Guide-Book to the Capitals of the Baltic, Iceland, and Norway (1899) and Mediterranean Winter Resorts (1904), announce "a choice selection of Lantern Slides of All Parts of the World. These are prepared from original negatives specially taken by Mr. Albert Young during recent cruises, and are constantly being supplemented by fresh negatives from Messrs. Fradelle & Young's representatives". Unmounted photographs of the "best silver prints" are available at one shilling each, along with "albums of views, beautifully bound in morocco" at 45 and 84 shillings each. The RMS Dunottar Castle was laid down in 1889 at the Govan shipyards on the Clyde; the following year she went into service with the Castle Line, running passengers and mail between Britain and South Africa and became renowned for reducing the voyage time from Southampton to Cape Town, from 42 days to 17. Following service as a troop ship in the Second Boer War (1899-1902) – carrying Sir Redvers Buller along with a young war correspondent called Winston S. Churchill - and a stint on the New York to Colon (Panama Canal) route, in 1908 she was chartered by Sir Henry Lunn for cruises to the Baltic and the Mediterranean. Lunn (1859-1939) organized tours that "proved highly successful. He pioneered the promotion of winter sports and was responsible for opening up large areas of Switzerland to the English public, forming the Hellenic Travellers' Club, Alpine Sports Limited, the Church Travellers' Club, and the Free Church Touring Guild. His cultural cruises, combining travel with lectures by well-known speakers, were also highly successful. His firm survived into the twenty-first century as Lunn-Poly" (ODNB). In Lunn's second volume of autobiography, the "Dunottar" is mentioned several times (Nearing Harbour: The Log of Sir Henry S. Lunn, London: 1934). A handsome album containing some most attractive images, reflecting the expansion of tourism in fin de siècle Europe and the development of the aristocratic Grand Tour into middle-class "cultural tourism".
