Deland, Margaret
Boston or Kennebunkport, Maine or Dedham, Mass: 1904-1908. Approximately 95 pages. 8vo & 4to. An archive of correspondence by the novelist, essayist, and short-story writer Margaret Deland (1857-1945), whose work examined the moral challenges faced by American women at the turn of the century, to James MacArthur, her editor at Harpers. Deland is perhaps best known as the author of John Ward, Preacher (1888), Old Chester Tales (1898), and The Awakening of Helena Richie (1906). The present letters concern works published and in progress, text corrections, payment terms, plot lines, reactions to her books, publicity, etc. Also included are one and a half-pages of the typescript of one of The Awakening of Helena Richie, profusely annotated, and with another sheet of holograph additions and corrections. MacArthur (1866-1909) was a literary advisor and editor at Harper's from 1901-1909, during which period Harpers published several of Deland's works, including Helena Richie, Dr. Lavendar's People (1903), The Common Way (1904), An Encore (1907), and Where the Laborers are Few (1909), and Harpers remained Deland's publisher for the rest of her career. "Throughout her career, Deland's work reflected the dilemmas facing women at the turn of the century and advocated moderation, balance, and individual responsibility as the best responses to the changing social order. Critic Diana Reep sums up Deland's strength as a storyteller and social commentator: 'Her work is a mirror of the relationships, the problems, the moral crises of an age'" (ANB) Excerpts: December 22, 1904: "That poor li … [Click Below for Full Description]

E.W. Kemble
1908. The book is overall in very good condition, the pages themselves are all in fine condition with no folds, tears, stains or foxing. The four corners of the covers have minor bumping and chipping as shown in the photographs. None of the pages are loose, as can be seen in the photograph depicting the letter N in the middle of the book. Only the front of the dust jacket remains, which is in poor condition, as shown. Mark Twain called Edward Windsor Kemble, author/illustrator of "A Coon Alphabet", a"genius of an illustrator. In 1883, he began illustrating for the original "Life" magazine, and, the next year, Kemble was chosen to illustrate the first edition of "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". This is a truly rare copy of a book that is an excellent example of the comic nature of racial prejudice in the early twentieth century. Although most of the caricatures are somewhat sympathetic, they all conform to the racial stereotypes of the period. This book was reprinted in 1978. I could not find any copies of the first edition on Alibris and only one copy on Abebooks, with a better dust jacket and signed by the author, listed at $19,500. The complete book can be viewed online at the University of Florida digital collections, or, if you contact me, you are welcome to view it at my home or my store on the West side of Chicago. Make me a fair offer and I will certainly consider it. [Attributes: First Edition]

0. Ephemera. The following is a beautiful archive of autograph letters with envelopes (mostly) from Juanita Miller to her father from Sept 1908 through March 21, 1911. Also included are several extra items including one autograph letter from Joaquin Miller to his daughter and several letters relating to either Juanita or Joaquin. "Cincinnatus Heine Miller (September 8, 1837 - February 17, 1913), better known by his pen name Joaquin Miller, was a colorful American poet and frontiersman. He is nicknamed the "Poet of the Sierras" after the Sierra Nevada, about which he wrote in his Songs of the Sierras (1871)." (From Wikipedia.) His daughter Juanita (Juanita Joaquina Miller -daughter of Joaquin Miller and wife Abbie Leland Miller was born in New York City in 1880. Miss Miller lived at Joaquin Miller's locally famous home, "The Heights," in Oakland, California, and was an active participant in the Oakland performing arts community until the 1960s.) She studied music in New York and was a sometime composer of music which produced to accompany her father's poems / lyrics. She was famous more for her father's well respected name than anything she herself did and was a flamboyant and rather eccentric character well known in the San Francisco Bay area from the 1930's on. The archives consist of:*Five holograph letters to Joaquin Miller from his daughter dated September 21st, 1908 - Dec 26th, 1908 in hand addressed envelopes.*Seven holograph letters to Joaquin Miller from his daughter dated February 1, 1909 - November 5th, 1909, in hand addressed envelopes.*Ten letters to Joaquin Mil … [Click Below for Full Description]

Winston S. Churchill
Hodder & Stoughton; George H. Doran Company, 1908. My African Journey Winston S. Churchill London & New York: Hodder & Stoughton; George H. Doran Company, 1908 First U.S. edition, second state Condition: Very Good This is the U.S. first edition, more humble in appearance than its British counterpart, but also far more scarce. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs ostensibly taken by the author. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains." In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book. By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in The Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them. In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton published My African Journey as a book, which was a substantial 10,000 words longer than the serialized articles. This is the first U.S. edition, only printing, second state. The first U.S. edition is far scarcer than the British first edition, with only 1400 copies sold (encompassing all three states), in contrast to more than 8000 copies of the more frequently seen British edition. Perceval Landon / Alberto Martini (Illustrator
William Heinemann, 1908. Hard Cover. First Edition. First Edition of Perceval Landon's collection of short stories, Raw Edges. Landon spent most of his professional life as an English war correspondent, expert on the Middle East (here Tibet, India, etc.), and professional travel writer; Raw Edges carved a significant legacy for him in the supernatural genre, despite an apparent dearth of any other forays into fiction. "Thurnley Abbey" in particular is called in some of its anthology reprints as the greatest English ghost story, and other tales from this collection also show his capacity for atmosphere and terror. Complete with four plates illustrated by Alberto Martini, and original tissue guards bound in. Some toning to the plates and facing pages. Japanese tissue repair by a conservator to the extremities of the spine. Publisher's black cloth with red lettering and white illustration, spine lettering now darkened. Very Good binding. [Commonplace Book] Florence Mary Fardon
[East Sussex]: 1897-1908. Manuscript notebook containing 53 handwritten literary contributions and 31 original pieces of art. Compiled by Florence Mary Fardon, entries range in time from September 1897, the date of her ownership inscription, up through 1908 with the largest concentration in 1897-1898. As several entries mark locations in Brighthelmstone and Hampton-in-Arden, it appears Florence resided in East Sussex. Genealogy records suggest she was born in Conventry in 1873, making her a young woman in her mid twenties at the time she and her friends created this book. Florence's commonplace book contains entries from both women and men, though the percentage leans more heavily toward the former and suggests she had a closeknit group of female friends. Compiled during the turn of the century, the manuscript gives insight into what this generation was reading and how they saw the world changing around them. Some entries are serious and literary, copying out American and European writers including Byron, Cowper, Lowell, Tennyson, Longfellow, and Emerson. Amid the English-language entries stand out a long poem in French and a short one in Greek. Similarly, some artwork provides beautiful studies of florals, such as the violets painted in guache by Katherine Green, Jeffrey's painting of Peziza Coccinea, or detailed forest and seaside landscapes. Yet there is also satire and wit in the album -- examples of young people humorously reminiscing about their childhoods or reveling in the ridiculousness of adulthood. An unsigned drawing and poem about Jumbo the elephant and her mot … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Cincinnatus Heine Miller (September 8, 1837 - February 17, 1913), better known by his pen name Joaquin Miller, was a colorful American poet and frontiersman. His daughter Juanita (Juanita Joaquina Miller -daughter of Joaquin Miller and wife Abbie Leland Miller was born in New York City in 1880.
