Kenneth Grahame
London: 1908. Please see my description. The Wind In The Willows By Kenneth Grahame Methuen & Co : London 1908 1st Edition / 1st Printing **Scarce 1908 Original DJ** **Incredibly Rare / Highly Sought After** For sale i have an extremely RARE true UK 1st Edition / 1st Printing of the iconic children's classic 'The Wind In The Willows'. Published in 1908 by Methuen this is the original with a limited number of 1st printings ever published. These books rarely turn up for sale fetching thousands when they do and that is without a dust jacket. This one has a good original example of the second issue / state DJ with the price of 7/6 net. If the jacket had the price of 6/ net ( the 1st state) it would have a price tag upwards of £40000 i think the last recorded one sold for £44000. Apart from the price the jacket is identical and basically neither are hardly ever seen. Overall a really nice example of this absolute treasure RARE in it's own right, virtually never seen with an original DJ. The book is bound in the publishers original decorative cloth covers with bright gilt titles and decoration showing toad and friends. The covers present well with a little marking only and a hint of sunning to the spine. Light bumping to the odd corner but on the whole one of the much better examples out there and there really aren't many. Internally the book is in about very good order, all original and complete. Neat inscription to the ffep with rough cut pages throughout as should be. Frontis piece and the tissue guard in good order with the frontis just tugging away slightly. The back of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lawson, Andrew
Washington, D.C.: Carnegie Institution of Washington, 1908. First Edition. Good. First edition. Large folio, measuring approximately 18.5" x 24.25". Ex-library copy rebound in drab gray cloth with typical stamps on endpapers and edges; small circular stamps on versos (not rectos) of maps, though, which is nice, as the maps and seismograms present very well. Small ink blot on verso of map #13 that bled through to recto slightly. The disastrous San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 echoes throughout this volume of huge color maps and seismograms from as far away as Tokyo and Siberia.[Attributes: First Edition]

Hanover and York, Pennsylvania, 1908. Large oblong octavo. Approximately 11" x 7.5". Cloth over flexible card wrappers. 242 gelatin sliver photographs measuring between 2.25" x 2.25" and 4.75" x 3.5". Almost all are captioned, mostly with printed phrases clipped from magazines or newspapers, a number by hand in white album ink. Light wear at the extremities of the wrappers, else near fine. The images are about fine with some light sunning. The album documents the adventures of a number of young women at a not-clearly-identified college in Southern Pennsylvania, possibly the York College of Pennsylvania. Despite the captions, some confusion exists as to the identity of the school, exacerbated somewhat by the women's tendency to decorate their dorm rooms with pennants from many other institutions. It does seem clear that the school was in proximity to York and Hanover, Pennsylvania. A few images of family members are present, as well as a few of recreations off-campus, but the vast majority are of young women posing on campus and both in their dorm rooms and in front of the building (several of the building bedecked with banners and flags for commencement), in costumes, dressed as Regency dandies, posing with tennis equipment, in formal dresses with flowers, with cameras, on boats (including two of a visit to a battleship), and otherwise happily comporting themselves. While a few men make an appearance in the album, the vast majority of the images are of college women at school. A nice, relatively early album of women at college with few men in evidence. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell case, with morocco spine label gilt. Images depict indigenous island life including flower vendors and lei girls, a luau at a native home, children, a poi pounder, Chinese and Japanese families, a mixed race boy (captioned "Negro Chicken Thief"), cliff divers, a tarro plantation, and ends with an interesting image of the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco dated after the fire in May 1908. Alice Dana Adams
Ginn and Company, Boston. The uncommon 1908 1st edition of this important, against-the-grain argument positing that pre-Civil War opposition to slavery (specifically from 1808 to 1931) was far more entrenched than widely believed. Until this examination, the era had been called the "period of stagnation", in which, it was believed, there was little sophisticated, organized opposition to the institution. Alice Adams's thesis (at Harvard) chips away at these beliefs with an abundance of concrete, thoroughly-researched evidence. The book, while fragile, has help up nicely. Clean and VG- in its printed beige wrappers, with light chipping along the spine and the tips. One 3" closed tear as well running vertically along the front panel. Still though, bright and presentable, and internally very clean, with no writing or markings to speak of. Octavo, #14 in the formidable "Radcliffe College Monographs" series. Sections include "Public Opinion in the South", "Public Opinion in the North", "Attitude of the Churches", "Anti-Slavery Societies", "The American Convention", "Movement of Slaves, and Colonization", "Territorial Questions of Slavery" and "Court Decisions". And, within these sections, there are multiple chapters casting a sharper light on each of these broader subjects. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

BLACKWOOD, Algernon.
Eveleigh Nash, Fawside House, 1908. John Silence is the Sherlock Holmes of psychic detectives featured in these six tales: A Psychical Invasion, Ancient Sorceries, The Nemesis of Fire, Secret Worship, and The Camp of the Dog. Blackwood's most popular book, and one wonders why he abandoned the character. A presentation copy, dated the month/year of publication. "For Elta, with much affection from Blackie. Sept. 1908." Now, although we do not yet know who "Elta" was, "with much affection" could've been a man or a woman, but such an early dated inscription indicates someone very close, very dear to Blackwood. And as Blackwood's biographer has noted, "John Silence made Blackwood's name and reputation. It is still the book he best remembered for to this day."Mike Ashley, author of Starlight-Man, The Extraordinary Life of Algernon Blackwood. The book that launched a thousand imitators. It's a v.g.- copy given its age, with a slight lean, dusted pages, but the spine gilt is still readable and the cover-stamping quite fresh. A book rarely found signed/inscribed. In a handsome, classic, leather-spined Gray Parrot traycase. [Attributes: First Edition]

Winston S. Churchill
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a compellingly clean copy of the British first edition, only printing of My African Journey, Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. The first edition is striking, with a vivid red binding and a prominent front cover bearing a woodcut illustration in blue, grey, and black of Churchill with his bagged white rhinoceros. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs apparently taken by the author. The red cloth spine proved exceptionally vulnerable to sunning and the lovely books seem to have attracted handling, making wear and soiling the norm. Spotting is also endemic. Bright and clean copies are scarce. We conservatively grade this copy as very good plus; it is notably clean (within and without), complete, and unrestored. The red cloth binding is clean and tight with sharp corners. We note only the slightest shelf wear to extremities and minor scuffs to the upper right of the front cover, and mild forward lean. Shelf presentation is quite good for the edition, the spine lightly sunned, but evenly so and showing no appreciable soiling, the gilt bright and clearly legible. The contents are likewise quite unusually clean for the edition, bright with a crisp, unread feel. We find no previous ownership marks. Spotting is quite mild for the edition, mostly confined to the page edges with just a few minor instances within to the preliminarie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Octavo, bound in full morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, with three full-page maps and over 60 photographs. Furuya KORIN
Kyoto: Unsôdô, Meiji 41 [1908]. [DESIGN] Furuya KORIN. KOGEI NO BI 工芸之美. Kyoto, Unsôdô, Meiji 41 [1908]. 3 vols. Folding orihon albums, 32 X 22.5 cm, in paper over boards with integral printed title labels. The first printing of this set, as here, is very scarce and quite delightful - the 75 large double page designs in woodblock, employing karazuri (gauffrage), metallic inks, etc., represent a peak of the printing art as practiced by Unsôdô at the time. Kôrin, the designer, is usually considered an equal to Sekka and Tennen, though this work and his remarkable SEIKA, are the only large format works by him we have seen. The designs are in an interesting format, often constrained to the shapes of pottery pieces, especially vases. The result is a remarkable demonstration of how two dimensional designs can be adapted to three dimensional shapes, here rendered, of course, in two dimensions once again. The printing is superb, the condition throughout good to very good, though there is occasional slight browning of the paper, as usual. In a later folding clasped chitsu case which preserves the original chitsu printed paper title label.

Post, Emily
New York: Moffat Yard, 1908. First Edition. First Edition. Warmly INSCRIBED by the author in the year of publication: "Dear Mrs. Whitin / I promised you these so long ago you have probably forgotten. All the same I send them with my love / Emily Post / 107 E. 34th St. / March 1908." A rare inscription from the author. Published fourteen years before her seminal 1922 book on etiquette earned Post a place in history, "Woven in the Tapestry" is a significant departure: an unusual period piece that brings together occult and historical themes, with a dash of philosophy thrown into the mix. Her third novel, and one of five that she would write before finding her way into nonfiction.Very Good, in lightly toned paper-wrapped boards, lacking dust jacket as issued. Uncommon, especially to find inscribed.[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

[Buffalo Bill Dime Novels]
Paris: A. Eichler, 1908. 100 issues, 32pp. each, many with an additional leaf of ads at the end. Printed in two columns, in French. Quarto. Original color pictorial wrappers. Moderate scattered foxing and toning (as usual), with occasional brittleness or chipping at the edges, ten issues with one or both wrappers detached but all wrappers present. Internal text clean throughout. A good plus collection. An unbroken run of the first 100 issues of this popular French weekly chronicling the adventures of Buffalo Bill as he battles Indians and other assorted bad guys in the Wild West. The magazine bills itself as "the only original edition authorized by Col. W.F. Cody, known as Buffalo Bill." Each issue contains a separate story, with the title printed in French on the cover (often accompanied by an English translation), and the text entirely in French. Each has a wonderfully color illustrated front wrapper, showing Cody rescuing settlers, saving damsels in distress, battling an Indian, or gunning down a miscreant. Many of the issues contain a biographical sketch of Cody on the rear wrapper, touting that his adventures are legendary to American readers, and now French audiences have an opportunity to read his stories themselves. Some of the titles include: "Buffalo Bill's Decoy Boys or The Death-Rivals of the Big Horn," "Buffalo Bill's Death Grapple or Shadowed by the Sure Shots," "Buffalo Bill's Brother in Buckskin or The Redskin Lariat Rangers," and "Buffalo Bill at War with the Danites or The Crafty Mormon's Darkest Plot."
