        A Song of the English

Hodder and Stoughton, London - Limited edition signed by W Heath Robinson. Undated but 1909. Numbered 89 out of 500 in decorative vellum binding, with 30 tipped in colour plates as called for by Heath Robinson and numerous black and white illustrations. The binding is faded on the spine with some cracking at the top and base. It is slightly grubby on the boards with some fading. Ties are present but they could be replacement ones (golden yellow). Internally the text pages are untrimmed and unpaginated apart from the top edges which are gilt edged. Some of the black and white illustrations have offset slightly onto the preceding page and some of the pages have slight marking (sometimes it is not clear if this was part of the original paper). The tipped in plates are all paper guarded (each guard has the title of the plate and a little design) and are in excellent condition with beautiful colouring.       Los Angeles, Cal.: Baumgardt Publishing Co.,. 1909. original green cloth, front panel stamped in white.. A few marks to cloth (probably a bit of insect tracking), a very good. copy. A nice copy of a very scarce book. (#137411). First edition. One of the more confused and shapeless products of eccentric American fantasy from the turn of the century, yet within this congealed lump of prose lurk sparks of unintentional hilarity and odd insight. The main section of the text is a compressed travelogue of a flight around the globe starting in the Gulf of Mexico, heading to the North Pole, thence over Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the South Pole, South America and back to North America. The ship is built of aluminum and powered by "liquid air." A touch of a button turns this into "VACUUM- ALUMINUM Corliss engines." The passengers of the ship witness various natural spectacles (lightning storms, tornadoes, volcanoes) and pass over an unknown continent with ruins of a lost civilization that might have been Atlantis. Part II consists of four short sketches, semi-unrelated to the main narrative. These narrate, partly via a speaking Sphinx, an apocalyptic future in which all the armies of the planet align themselves on the side of either East or West, and square off in what was ancient Israel. After one cataclysmic battle, and a cease fire to bury the dead, a lunar eclipse serves as a prelude for a vision of all the wars of the past, from Biblical, classical and medieval times; the sight of it sobers the nations of the world into a state of millennial peace. The author proclaims with Zionist fervor: "The chronometer of the universe is striking twelve. THE HOUR OF THE JEW HAS COME." Mankind finally arrives at the final utopia. An odd work which is not that easy to dismiss out of hand. The prescient rubs shoulders with the preposterous. Liquid air (whatever that means) is one of the author's obsessions, popping up here repeatedly. He foresees in the future the existence of vast factories with steel flues a thousand feet high built in the coldest parts of the earth to manufacture, or extract, liquid air and pipe it to the other parts of the earth. This sounds laughable, but, engineering issues aside, the atmosphere does consist partly of oxygen, which is flammable. The author is also bullish on radium, speculating that it may be the main ingredient of the sun; and that "- LIFE may be produced by means of rays of light generated by RADIUM." Vast pyramids of radium will be constructed in Europe to warm the climate and transform the land into an agricultural paradise. Elsewhere, and more impressively, he declares that Africa is the "birthplace of civilization." (At the time, this honor was usually given to the Fertile Crescent in Iraq; now it is believed that homo sapiens first appeared in the Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia.) Flying over what we would now call the Brazilian rain forest, he describes this as "God's CLEARING HOUSE of the world's physical forces," the most important source of oxygen and other essential elements. Much of the author's message can be dismissed as boilerplate bomfog (brotherhood of man, fatherhood of God - - which, with Mom and apple pie, has served as the Brazilian rain forest of politicians' oratory since primeval times). Yet in the midst of the sentimental blather and scientific howlers comes a pronouncement which lies still (especially now) at the heart of a vital controversy, ranging Malthusian pessimists and regulators on one side, and entrepreneurs on the other. This principal has only found widespread articulation recently with the arrival of the Information Age. "HUMAN LIFE IS THE GREATEST NATURAL RESOURCE OF THE UNIVERSE." A very short book (mercifully, given the clumsy writing) that manages nevertheless to corral a herd of important fantastic motifs together: the imaginary voyage, the tale of the future (including a future war), utopia, advanced technology, the clash of civilizations, Atlantis and the lost race story. The miraculous vision of past wars recalls the famous Machen tale of "The Bowmen," used several years later for partisan purposes to rally English morale. Here it is used impartially to save the warring parties from themselves. "... deserves notice because it reinforces so many ideas of the period." -- Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 827. Bleiler (1978), p. 212. Reginald 15639. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 147. Smith, American Literature, 1901-1925 W-905.

Verlag "Reiss".       Minneapolis, Minn.,. 1909. original red cloth, front and rear panels ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold.. Erratum slip affixed to front paste-down. A nearly fine copy.. (#147941). First edition. On a camping trip in rural Minnesota, the narrator encounters a curious creature, partly humanoid but with wings on his back; smaller wings in the front of his body that function apparently as clothing as well as sensory organs; an extra pair of limbs around his mid- section; a huge head with huge eyes and a vertical mouth. It immediately began to communicate with the camper, seeming to understand the camper's spoken words but addressing him telepathically. He is amiable and professorial in demeanor and proceeds to explain society on the Moon, as well as on Mars, which has been colonized by the Lunarians. The import of the book is clearly utopian, with detailed accounts (including measurements in some cases) about various aspects (economic, agricultural, sociological, biological, technological) of the society. The Lunarians' guiding principles are largely progressive (socialist, feminist, etc.). Balancing the didactic nature of the novel is the abundance of vivid and exotic details about life forms on the two planets (for example, the Lunarians have a third gender, and the dominant species on Mars resembles a starfish). The Lunarian professor has also traveled backward in time from the twenty- first century to reach the camper. "A curious book, very interesting for its imagination and unusual ideas. Along with Dail's WILMOTH THE WANDERER and Dieudonne's RONDAH, it falls into the category of fascinating eccentric books." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 31. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 009. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 20. Locke, Voyages in Space 2. Negley, Utopian Literature: A Bibliography 20.         Profili. Formiggini. Raccolta. 171 Volumi.

Modena - Genova - Roma - Milano, A. F. Formiggini Editore / Bietti, 1909 - 1938. Contributions to'Twenty Five Cricket Stories': Tom, Dick and Harry; The Wire-Pullers; The Lost Bowlers; How Pillingshoot Scored

London: George Newnes, c.1909., 1909. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE. Small octavo, pp. 208. Contains four Wodehouse stories, three of which are published for the first time in book form. How Pillingshoot Scored had already appeared in Tales of St. Austins, 1903. These Newnes-period Wodehouse stories were collected in this rare omnibus. Apart from the publisher's file copy, we are unable to find a note of any example offered for sale or appearing at auction. The bibliographer McIlvaine mentions the title, but does not provide a description. A companion volume Twenty Five Football Stories was also mooted by Newnes the following year – again, this has proved virtually impossible to locate. Bound in publisher's illustrated card covers housed in collector's folding box. Some rubbing and wear to joints, chip/loss along lower portion of cover, one long tear to joint extending to spine and rear. A remarkable survival of an exceptionally rare book. McIlvaine E126/127

Zopf und Empire in Mittel- und Norddeutschland. 2 Vol.-set (Complete)

Leipzig: Baumgärtner's Buchhandlung, 1909. First edition. Hardcover. g+ to near fine. Folio. Part 1: 16pp., 90 plates, Part 2: 16pp., 90 plates. Two portfolios in original three quarter green cloth over green paper-covered board with gilt lettering on cover. Decorative paper-covered inside covers and flaps. Introduction by the author and list of halftone plates and in-text photographs with descriptive text in both volumes. Impressive collection of "Zopfbauten" presented in 180 skillful halftone plates based on the 1906 edition of the same title. Zopfstil is an architectural style developing in the transition from Rococo to Classicism in the late 18th Century. Characteristic for this period is a certain simplicity in design and the participation of the well-to-do middle class in defining the period as opposed to the dominant aristocracy up to that point. The images are espically useful for architects working with restoration of doorways, gates and the enterance of these buildings. Text in German. Portfolios with light wear along edges and some scuffing on covers. Plates slightly age-toned, not affecting images. Portfolios in overall good+, interiors in near fine condition.

Coloured frontispiece from a watercolour by the author, and 36 plates from photographs, folding route map, and coloured folding area map at the rear. First edition, a fairly uncommon book, this copy accompanied by an atmospheric original watercolour by Tate, which is reproduced as a plate in the book, captioned "Nad Ali. The delta of Seistan from the Tell of Surhdik". Fascinating account of the author's travels on the borders of Afghanistan and Baluchistan, and into Seistan, as an Extra Assistant Superintendent, Survey of India, employed on the Baluch-Afghan Boundary Mission, 1895-6, and Seistan Arbitration Mission, 1903-5, on the later Tate was in charge of the survey section. Both missions were undertaken under Sir Henry McMahon, who was later Governor-General of Baluchistan, and who here commends Tate in his introduction for for the "strength and picturesque colouring of his portraiture of the country and people he describes".

        Lease signed

1909. Signed. GIMBEL BROTHERS.Lease signed (Greeley Square Realty Company to Gimbel Brothers, New York).New York, April 23, 1909.Rare original 21-year lease for the site of New York's famous Gimbels department store, dated 1909, signed by six of the Gimbel brothers as well as the original tenant (who had run a Milwaukee Gimbels for decades), fully notarized, with a wonderful 35" by 27-1/2" folding floor plan bound in showing the first three levels of construction, elevator placement, and plans for public transit and also with three legal letters relating to the floor plan. This exceptional 21-year lease is for the site on which the Gimbel brothers built their iconic New York department store, paying $605,000 for the first three years commencing on August 1, 1910, increasing to $655,000 by July 31, 1931. The signatories to the lease include brothers Jacob, Isaac, Charles, Daniel, Ellis, and Louis Gimbel. The document is also signed by the president of Greeley Square Realty Company and the tenant. The document has also been notarized in the appropriate locations. Of particular interest is the 35" by 27-1/2" floor plan dated April 16, 1909 attached to the conclusion of this document along with copies of three letters between the New York law firm of Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett and Gimbel Brothers relating to the floor plan. The plan itself shows the first floor, basement floor, and the sub basement. The mezzanine and the location of six passenger elevators are also noted. Red diagonal lines are shown with "space hatched red to be occupied by H. & M.R.R. Co." The Hudson & Manhattan Railroad Co. is known today as PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson). Construction began on the existing tunnels under the Hudson River in 1890, but stopped shortly thereafter when funding ceased. Construction resumed twice, the second time three months after this deed was signed.Bavarian Jewish immigrant Adam Gimbel arrived in the United States in 1835. He opened a general store in Vincennes, Indiana in 1842, then moved to Danville, Illinois in the 1880s. By 1887, he had moved to Milwaukee, which was being flooded with German immigrants and which provided a perfect location to open his first department store. It was a massive success. People in Milwaukee were known to remark that Gimbel had "a surplus of capital and a surplus of Gimbels." The Gimbels were a success, but they needed to expand. In 1894, a seven-story Gimbels opened in Philadelphia. On June 16, 1910, The New York Times headlined "Gimbel Store Completed," noting that "the contract was signed on April 23, 1909, and that the excavating work consumed five months, so that the work of construction proper did not actually begin until well in October of [the previous] year." The new Gimbels had two basement floors that essentially functioned as an outlet-type version of the upper floors, meant to attract low price seekers and small wage earners. It was a new innovation. The entirety of the store became a chief rival to the store across the street, Macy's. The rhetorical question "Does Macy's tell Gimbels?" became a popular phrase, meaning that competitors were not supposed to share trade secrets. While Gimbels closed in 1986, it lives on in Miracle on 34th Street, the 1947 Oscar-winning motion picture, in which Kris Kringle (Macy's new Santa) sends a customer to Gimbels when the store does not have what the customer wants. For many, though, Gimbels remains a beloved memory of New York (and, indeed, a number of other cities).Only light soiling and slight rubbing to edges of wrappers. An exceptional near-fine piece of New York history.

London: [Printed at the Riccardi Press for] Philip Lee Warner, Publisher to the Medici Society, 1909. No. 61 OF 500 COPIES n. Hardcover. The First Riccardi Book. 260 x 194 mm (10 1/4 x 7 5/8"). 6 p.l., 16, [1] pp. No. 61 OF 500 COPIES. Pleasing olive-brown crushed morocco by Bumpus (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers framed with three sets of triple fillets, raised bands, spine compartments similarly framed, gilt titling and turn-ins, all edges gilt. Vignette on title page and colophon, both in blue, and 10 fine color plates by Russell Flint, mounted on stiff paper, each of the plates accompanied by a tissue guard and an additional captioned paper guard. Tomkinson, p. 148. Spine faded to a soft hazel brown (as usual with green), boards with just a hint of the same fading, very slight rubbing to a small portion of the joints, usual offsetting from turn-ins to endleaves, one tissue guard with one-inch strip torn at head edge, but still a very appealing copy, the attractive binding lustrous and with no significant wear, and the interior clean and fresh. Containing, in Houfe's words, "brilliant" figures that are "finely modeled" and that show "elements of a Burne-Jones influence by way of Byam Shaw," this is the first of a series of luxury editions produced by Sir William Russell Flint (1880-1969) for the Riccardi Press of the Medici Society between 1905-24. As Tomkinson relates, the Riccardi Press "was adopted in 1909 by the Medici Society at 7 Grafton Street, London; the books [were] printed at the Chiswick Press (under the supervision of Charles T. Jacobi until his retirement in 1922) and published by Philip Lee Warner, who was Publisher to the Medici Society until his death in 1925 . . . . The aim of the Press has been to produce finely printed books at reasonable prices and for sale through the ordinary channels of trade. . . . All editions are strictly limited, and the type is distributed after the edition has been printed." Although Riccardi Press books do not rank with Kelmscotts or Ashendenes, those with plates after Flint have considerable appeal, and as an inaugural publication, the present volume represents a significant achievement. Although simple in design, our binding reflects the typically well-executed and generally undervalued work produced with the Bumpus name for a substantial period, beginning in the latter part of the 19th century. Packer says that the Bumpus bindings emanated from the bookselling firm of John and Edward Bumpus, which was founded in 1780, and the Bumpus name still held an honored place among London binderies well into the 20th century.

About half the book was devoted to the mathematical and statistical methods needed in the analysis of the quantitative data arising from experiments in genetics. . . . Many European biologists owed to [the Elemente] their introduction to genetics? (Dictionary of Scientific Biography).         The Wild Rose: A Volume of Poems

London and New York: David Nutt (1909) - London and New York: David Nutt (1909). The second collection of Uranian verse by the American connosieur, which includes eighty-six poems exalting same-sex love, particularly of the pedarastic variety. Warren wrote several books on similar themes, all of which display his zeal for Greek ideals of Platonic love and comradeship. All of his books were published under variations of this pseudonym and the title apparently alludes to Warren's symbol for Greek "comrade-love." A very good copy in the original publisher's suede leather binding with gold embossed cover decoration, covers and spine unevenly darkened, rear cover lightly abraded, light discoloration at front and rear hinges. Quite uncommon. Laid into the book is a 6pp. ALS from the author dated 1921 in which he discusses various personal and family matters. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
