ANNAL OF CHINESE FACIAL PHYSIOGNOMY: A Hanging Scroll of Chinese Divination & Re

[China ca. 20th century]. A hanging scroll, very good, 34 x. 95 cm., image 32.5 x 21.5 cm., mounted on buff silk, small. mend on lower part of silk, image not affected, else solid,. 3 cinnabar chops/seal. OBSCURE AND RARE WORK. OBSCURE 20TH CENTURY REPRINT OF A SUNG DYNASTY WORK The work shows two faces: one female [right], one male [left], and are both woodblock printed on two joined sheets, then the whole is mounted on an attractive hanging scroll, with silk additions. * This exact work was used to illustrated item 110, p. 127-8 in Ecke's work: CHINESE FOLK ART II: see below for bibliographic citation. We now quote and summarize what she stated about this work: "The woman's face is divided in half vertically by thirteen horizontally placed sections of Chinese characters, which vary in the number of individual characters they contain. The characters are terms of physiognomy and a reading of the history of the woman's life, past, present and future, can be taken from the sections. The characters on the man's face also denote a reading. Around the center of his face, between the eyes & above the bridge of the nose, are twelve sections which encircled the words. The physiognomic terms for this man are numbered. From the placement of the characters on his face, one can read about the people in his life, including his relatives, and about his own health and fortune. Below the facial diagrams are definitions of the terms." * PROVENANCE: The work was acquired directly from Prof. Richard C. Rudolph [1909-2003] the late, great author, professor and scholar of Chinese studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. His cinnabar chop is found in the lower center. * As per Ecke, this work was mounted as a hanging scroll or Kakejiku in the Japanese style. It has delicate pale yellow silk brocade mounting with a beige silk above that. It is likely that Prof. Rudolph collected these silks in China during his 1948-49 collecting trip. Google him for copious details. * ABOUT THE SEALS OR CHOPS: This copy was loaned to Ecke for her book and used in the exhibition at LACMA [see below for more details]. Our copy is the actual one exhibited in the book, Prof. Rudolph affixed his seals to it prior to sale as was his habit. * THE SCROLL & MOUNTING: As per Ecke, this work was mounted as a hanging scroll or Kakejiku in the Japanese style, it is 34 cm. wide, 95 cm. long in all. The actual image is 31.5 x 32 cm. and consists of actually two images joined together. The mounting silk is a pale yellow brocade with beige silk above that, a very clean, nice mounting. It is likely that Prof. Rudolph collected these silks in China during his 1948-49 book buying trip. Google him for copious details. * For a more in-depth discussion of this Chinese medical practice, see Lessa below who illustrates a similar male face on p.51 fig. #5, and throughout several very similar examples. He explains the thirteen parts in much detail. The whole of chapter 4 is on the face and head, he also offers much valuable insight to the significance of reading the face and its associated meanings. * The Chinese have reduced the reading of facial attributes to a medical science, per Lessa: "No people have exceeded the Chinese in their efforts to determine character and destiny by the very scrutiny of the body itself. In China the documentation is ancient and begins at the time before that of Confucius [220 B.C.]." He also discusses the "Six Treasuries, Three Forces and Three Sections;" also the "Five Planets, Six Stars, Five Mountains, and Four Rivers;" the "Twelve Temples and Five Senses;" in facial line reading. The "Thirteen Parts" resembles our example in that half of the face is covered with explanatory text covering these "parts." All were extracted from Ku China, 1728. He further details on pp.54-55 the meanings of lines on the face, marks and significance. Moles, ear, eye, nose, eye brow and forehead also has their various readings. This text supports the information found on this set of prints we now offer. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: * Tseng Yu-ho Ecke: CHINESE FOLK ART I, see #58, p.90, 91 which again cites and illustrates this exact work. * Tseng Yu-ho Ecke: CHINESE FOLK ART II: page 127 illustrates this exact item offered, see our scan for a copy of this article and example her # 110. * Another identical example is found, illustrated & described in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Member's Calendar July 1977, vol.14, no.7. This example is again the one used in the Ecke book, loaned to her by Prof. Rudolph, ergo this item offered. * William A. Lessa: CHINESE BODY DIVINIATION: Its Forms, Affinities, and Functions. This resource is valuable as it illustrates and discusses in much detail this sort of print and its significance. See chapter 4, pp.41-88, and figures [plates] 1-17. * A very fascinating item and unusual subject, seldom found on the market. The current example is an obscure 20th century reprint of the Sung Dynasty original. Suitable for library display. * Color scans can be sent by email. Images displayed may not be the actual copy in stock for sale at any given time; if you want to see the exact image of the book or edition in stock, please request this by email and an image will be returned to you by attachment. * * * * BUY WITH .

["That place is mine" - Original artwork for H. Rider Haggard's "Morning Star"]

n.p.: the artist, 1909. 9.5x13.5 inch illustration board with beautifully rendered gouache and pencil illustration, signed "Michael 1909" at lower left corner, a pen note on the back indicating "Morning Star p. 198." This image was indeed used for the color plate facing page 198 in Haggard's novel, a fantasy set in ancient Egypt. This was one of three plates in the book, the scene depicted here portraying the blonde queen Neter-Tua just after she has claimed the throne of Egypt, enraging Prince Abi and his dusky acolytes. AC Michael's illustrations captivated a generation of readers, but the original artwork for these illustrations appears on the market very infrequently. The piece at hand is the same work that was sold in 1982 by the George S. MacManus Company for $650.

        Odysseia.

Printed at the University Press, Oxford 1909 - ONE OF 225 COPIES, 4to, ff. [3, blank], [227], [3, blank]. Printed on handmade paper in black and red with Proctor's 'Otter' Greek typeface. Original quarter linen, light blue boards, paper label to spine, untrimmed, original board slipcase. Paper label just a little darkened and rubbed, a little light foxing to boards (otherwise quite fresh), slipcase repaired in two places with paper tape. The second book printed with Robert Proctor's famous 'Otter' Greek typeface, based on the Greek type cut for the Complutensian Polyglot Bible in 1514. Radically different from most previous Greek typefaces - geometrically rounded and evenly weighted instead of calligraphic - it saw relatively little use, having been cut in just one (large) size suitable only for fine press work. The Oxford University Press, to which the types came following their first use, an Oresteia printed at the Chiswick Press in 1904 (shortly after Proctor's untimely disappearance), did not often find uses for it - this Odyssey was followed by a slim volume containing a speech from Thucydides two decades later, and a Four Gospels in 1932 - but Monotype New Hellenic, significantly inspired by Proctor's work, is still a standard typeface for the Cambridge University Press.         The Fables of Aesop

A beautifully illustrated copy of The Fables of Aesop, illustrated by Edward J. Detmold. Published by Hodder and Stoughton, London. 1909. This book is in fine condition, with all it's illustrations, although some are coming slightly unstuck this is easily fixed. There is some slight spotting and ageing to some of the pages, and a very minor lean to the spine, otherwise this is a lovely clean copy of a beautiful version of the classic fables bound in original maroon cloth with gilt gold lettering and decorations and an inset front piece illustration of a monkey and two travellers. This copy would be a worthwhile addition to any collection of fine binding and special edition books.

        A TRIP TO MARS

1909. With Six Coloured Illustrations by W.H.C. Groome. London: W. & R. Chambers | Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1909. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in blue, black, white and gilt. First Edition, American issue, of this tale of a trip to Mars and of encounters with its winged inhabitants. This is one of the group of life-on-Mars tales that came out in the several years following Percival Lowell's 1908 scientific book MARS AS THE ABODE OF LIFE (Lowell was the director of the astronomical observatory at Flagstaff Arizona). Included are six plates in full color, most of them of quite dramatic scenes.~As "Frank Aubrey" and "Fred Ashley," Atkins had written adventure romances such as THE DEVIL-TREE OF EL DORADO, A QUEEN OF ATLANTIS, KING OF THE DEAD and THE RADIUM SEEKERS, and as "Fenton Ash" he would go on to write BY AIRSHIP TO OPHIR, THE BLACK OPAL and THE ISLAND OF GOLD.~This copy is in the primary binding (red cloth, lettering and some of the design in gilt, dark endpapers); there was a secondary binding with the same design, with no gilt and with white endpapers. Though the entire first edition was printed in Edinburgh, some copies such as this one were for the American market (thus Lippincott is added to the title page and appears at the foot of the spine). It is a close-to-fine copy, unusually bright, with scarcely any wear or soil (as usual there is a bit of foxing on some of the thick wove paper used for the text). Bleiler Checklist p. 11. Housed in a custom clamshell case with leather label.

"I can't see why they ever took it off, Jasper. It was beautiful: 'In God We Trust.' What did they take it off for?"On the verso of the leaf, also in Mark Twain's hand "[ad]vertise them & throw business their way." (crossed through).Mark Twain intended "The International Lightning Trust" for immediate publication in 1909, but the story was withdrawn from Harper and Brothers by his daughter Clara and Albert Bigelow Paine after the author's death. The satire on special providences was not published until 1972 in Mark Twain's Fables of Man.Two unemployed journeyman printers, Jasper Hackett and Stephen Spaulding, become millionaires by underwriting lightning insurance: a one-dollar, lifetime premium returns a $5,000 benefit to the family of one struck by lightning. The underlying satire of the story concerns one of Mark Twain's favorite targets: special providences. Even though the cunning young men have been successful because there are only twenty-eight deaths by lightning per year and they have plated on their victims ignorance and fear, they convince themselves that they are merely instruments of God's will and must, therefore be rewarded by God: " We are benefactors," says Jasper. "… Providence sees what we are doing; Providence will recompense us." (Potsdam Public Museum, Images of America, p. 401)."I noticed in the papers this afternoon a despatch from Washington, saying that Congress would immediately pass a bill restoring to our gold coinage the motto "In God We Trust." I'm glad of that; I'm glad of that. I was troubled when the motto was removed. Sure enough, the prosperities of the whole nation went down in a heap when we ceased to trust in God in that conspicuously advertised way. I knew there would be trouble. And if Pierpont Morgan hadn't stepped in --Bishop Lawrence may now add to his message to the old country that we are now trusting in God again. So we can discharge Mr. Morgan from his office with honor." (Mark Twain. Address at the Dinner in Honor of Ambassador Reid, Given by the Pilgrims' Club of New York on February 19, 1908).[together with] FRAZER, J.G. Passages of the Bible: Chosen for their Literary Beauty and Interest. London: Adam and Charles Black, 1895. First edition, second printing (November 1895). Octavo (7 5/16 x 5 1/16 inches; 186 x 128 mm.). xvi, 467, [1, printers imprint] pp. Publisher's tan pictorial cloth stamped in green and black with spine titled in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut.Spine lightly sunned, else near fine. Printed label on front pastedown, "This volume is from the Library of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) [signature] Albert Bigelow Paine, Literary Executor. Sold February, 1911 by the Anderson Auction Company, No. 12 East 46th Street, New York." Also on front paste-down, the original catalogue entry, number 40. "BIBLE (The) Frazer (j.G.). Passages of the Bible chosen for their Literary Beauty and Interest. Post 8vo, art cloth, gilt top, uncut. * Accompanying the above volume is an 8vo sheet of ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT, by Mr. Clemens, reading as follows: " Every vast commercial enterprise ought to have something theological…"Additionally the volume is inscribed on the half-title "Rev. U.G.B. Pierce / from George [indiscernible]/ with high regards / N.Y. Feb. 7, 1912."The Rev. U.G.B. Pierce was a one time minister at Pomona. He was the author of an excellent and most instructive lecture on Ralph Waldo Emerson entitled "Pilgrim from the East"."In God we Trust" has been the official motto of the Unites States since 1956. And this year (1916) a Mark Twain commemorative coin will be issued. In addition to being amused and maybe a bit proud at appearing on a coin, Twain would also recognize the irony of depicting him on coinage bearing the national motto ?"In God We Trust.?"Twain said this about the motto?'s use on coinage, in a speech he gave May 14, 1908:?"Some years ago on the gold coins we used to trust in God. It think it was in 1863 that some genius suggested that it be put on the gold and silver coins which circulated among the rich. They didn't put it on the nickels and coppers because they didn't think the poor folks had any trust in God. ... If I remember rightly, the President required or ordered the removal of that sentence from the coins. Well, I didn't see that the statement ought to remain there. It wasn't true. But I think it would better read, ?'Within certain judicious limitations we trust in God,?' and if there isn't enough room on the coin for this, why enlarge the coin."He was a little off on the date, of course. The motto?'s origins trace to an 1861 letter from a minister to the Treasury secretary and it didn?'t appear on a coin until the release of the bronze 2-cent coin in 1864. But he was pretty close otherwise. The president being referenced was Theodore Roosevelt, and Twain was right; Roosevelt demanded that the motto not be used on the new gold coins designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for issuance in 1907. Of course, about the time Twain was making his speech, Congress was overriding Roosevelt?'s decision by ordering the use of the motto on the coinage. And the lesser coins mentioned by Twain — the nickels and coppers — they, too, would gain the motto a few years later as new designs were issued to replace the old ?"godless?" coins.

Lederstrumpf-Erzählungen. Übersetzt und bearbeitet von F. Federn. Mit Original-Lithographien von Max Slevogt.

Berlin, P. Cassirer 1909. Trans-Himalaya. Discoveries and Adventures in Tibet, with 388 Illustrations from Photographs, Water-Colour Sketchs, and Drawings By the Author, and 1o Maps (3 folding), in Two Volumes

New York 1909,. Macmillan - large 8vo original redl cloth, two vol. set, 436+441p., 17 color, 360 b.w. photos & illus., 7 maps,3 fold out maps, index, very good cridp and bright copy. One of the most important works by the famous explorer providing an account of his expedition through Tibet from 1906-1908. "Traversing the Chang-tang in Tibet through Srinagar and Leh he reached to Shigatse. Thence he went back to Lake Mana sarowar along the Tsangpo and descended the Indus, and then towards Leh and returned to Simla by the Sutlej route" (Kakushi) Hedin was responsible for putting Tibet on the map, literally. His surveys and mapping expeditions helped to discover for the world the physical geography of the region. The maps he produced were used as a point of reference in 1963, when Gordon Cooper took hyperaltitude photos of Tibet during the last Mercury space mission. The photos were compared against Hedin's survey sightings on mountain peaks to give the scientists a starting point in revising extant maps of the areas. Cooper's mission marked "the beginning of serious planning for Earth resource surveys from space" (Wilford, THE MAPMAKERS, pp. 338-9). This is a highly readable account of Hedin's travels and experiences. A third volume was issued in 1913 and is not included with the two 1909-10 volumes offered here.         4 TLSs - 4 maschinenschriftliche Briefe mit Unterschrift. - Interessante Beilagen.

      - Czernowitz 24.IX.1909 bis 24.II.1910. 6 Seiten (gr.-) 4°. 2 mit gestempelten Briefkopf. Teilweise leicht fleckig. Notizen in Kurzschrift u.a., sämtlich die Berufungssache betreffend. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Profili. Formiggini. Raccolta. 171 Volumi.

      - Modena-Genova-Roma-Milano, A. F. Formiggini Editore/Bietti, 1909-1938.
