Original red bindings, gilt titles design, gilt embossed Veritas seal, decorations & borders on front cover & spine. Gilt, black, red & white endpapers, frontispieces in each volume. The definitive Harvard Classics collection, also known as the Five-Foot Shelf of Books, is a monument to the world's great works of literature and history, and has been eagerly collected since it was first published in 1909. "The Harvard Classics, originally known as Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf, is a 51-volume anthology of classic works from world literature, compiled and edited by Harvard University president Charles W. Eliot that was first published in 1909. Eliot, then President of Harvard University, had stated in speeches that the elements of a liberal education could be obtained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. (Originally he had said a three-foot shelf.) The publisher P. F. Collier and Son saw an opportunity, and challenged him to make good on this statement by selecting an appropriate collection of works; the Harvard Classics was the result. Eliot worked for one year together with William A. Neilson, a professor of English; Eliot determined the works to be included and Neilson selected the specific editions and wrote introductory notes. Each volume had 400 to 450 pages or so; and the included texts are "so far as possible, entire works or complete segments of the world's written legacies." INCLUDES: Vol. 1: FRANKLIN, WOOLMAN, PENN: His Autobiography, by Benjamin Franklin; Journal, by John Woolman; Fruits of Solitude, by William Penn; Vol. 2.         Raum und Zeit.

Leipzig and Berlin: Druck und Verlag von B. G. Teubner,, 1909. Vortrag, gehalten auf der 80. Natur-Forscher-Versammlung zu Köln am 21. September 1908. Mit dem Bildnis Hermann Minkowskis sowie einem Vorwort von A. Gutzmer. Octavo. Original wrappers, title stamped to front wrapper. Photographic portrait frontispiece with tissue guard, Wrappers with some light spotting, tanning and some rubbing and creasing around extremities, a small few trivial ink marks to rear wrapper, internally clean but for faint spotting to the (blank) recto of frontispiece. A very good copy of a fragile issue. First separate edition, first printing, of Minkowski's revolutionary paper which "introduced the notion that made possible the expansion of the relativity theory of Einstein from its specific (1905) to its general form (1916). The technical description of Minkowki's hypothesis is the four-dimensional space-time continuum." (PMM). The lecture was read by Minkowski in Cologne on 21 September 1908, and its bold opening is now infamous: "The views of space and time which I wish to lay before you have sprung from the soil of experimental physics, and therein lies their strength. They are radical. Henceforth space by itself, and time by itself, are doomed to fade away into mere shadows, and only a kind of union of the two will preserve an independent reality." He died suddenly of appendicitis in January 1909, and the text of Raum und Zeit was first printed in the 1909 Jahresberichte der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung (vol. 18, pp. 75-88), but reprinted in tribute in this desirable first separate form.
