Washington, DC: The Carnegie Institution of Washington, 1909. First edition.. A very bright and clean copy in near fine condition.. Pp. xvii, (3), 315; color frontispiece of coral snake, 33 full page plates with original tissue guards (color drawings, black-and-white photos and photogravures, fine halftones). Wier Mitchell who introduced him to the study of snake venoms. With financial support from Weir, he began to produce papers on snake venoms in 1902. His best known work, "Snake Venoms: An Investigation of Venomous Snakes with Special Reference to the Phenomena of their Venoms" is offered here. This large and well-known illustrated monograph includes a review of the venomous snakes of the world, the anatomy of the poison apparatus, a summary of all previous work on venom poisoning and composition, and concludes with the results of the Noguchi's own immunological research (adapted from Adler, History of Herpetology, volume 2, pages 130-131). Noguchi went on to study yellow fever in Lagos, West Africa; unfortunately, he caught the disease and died in Accra on May 21, 1928. Small name stamp of former owner appears in the outer top corner of the front wrapper.

The Home of the Motor Cab. The General Motor Cab Company Ltd. 1909

London, 1909. Hardcover. Cloth. Good. Scarce, with no copies located on OCLC First Search. Oblong 4to. 24 by 29 cm. 56, [2] pp. Fourteen of the pages are bright color plates generally depicting the smart set riding in beautiful vehicles, but also an illustration of the company's expansive headquarters and garage located in Kennington, a neighborhood in South London next to Vauxhall. The text presents both matter-of-fact info about the company's taxi services -- charges, policies, etc. -- but also some lighter breezer fare on such topics as a trip to the Channel or Coventry. Red cloth cover heavily soiled. Endpapers, title and final leaf grubby. Otherwise, lower band of leaves with hint of waviness that might come from a passing exposure to moisture, and perhaps a touch of soiling here and there. A few other finger smudges, minor closed tears and light wear besides. Notwithstanding these issues, a very handsome sales promotion for a cab company that was not just selling itself but also the notion of the horseless carriage as a luxury alternative to the horse drawn vehicle not yet fully vanquished in metropolitan use.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Golliwogg in the African Jungle, First Edition, by Florence Upton

Florence Upton published and illustrated thirteen Golliwogg books with verses written by her mother, Bertha Upton. The character of the Golliwogg was based upon a childhood toy of Upton. Her charming book illustrations contributed to the launch of the Golliwogg into a landmark children's character in it's time. Unusually, some of the rarest of her books are the later ones such as this one. This copy of The Golliwogg in the African Jungle first edition is in very good condition for it's age. Cloth backed paper covered illustrated covers with Golliwogg and the giraffe. Brown cloth spine strip. All in very good condition for an antique book - clean and minimal wear. Internally very clean and no children's scribbles or significant marks. Illustrated with full page colour plates. Pages all intact. Only one 2" tear on page 49. Oblong 4to. Sixty four printed pages.

In British East Africa, Roosevelt hunted lion and plains game on the Kapiti Plains, while, in the Bondoni hill country, he collected rhinoceros and giraffe. On Juja Farm, his son Kermit faced leopard, while Teddy bagged rhino and hippopotamus. On the Kamiti River, buffalo were taken. Further adventures included hunting elephant near Lake Nyanza, rhino and plains game in the Lado, and eland on the Nile. Roosevelt?s total bag was enormous even by the liberal standards of that era" (Czech, 138-39).

        Three Years in Tibet

Madras: The Theosophist Office, Adyar, Madras; Theosophical Publishing Society, 1909. First edition. Hardcover. First edition, with the original printed stiff paper wrappers bound in. A narrative of travels in Tibet between 1897 and 1903. Written by Ekai Kawaguchi (1866 - 1945), a Japanese Buddhist monk, the first recorded Japanese citizen to travel to Tibet. Kawaguchi is known four his journeys to Nepal (1899, 1903, 1905 & 1913), and Tibet (July 4, 1900-June 15, 1902; and 1913-1915). Tibet was officially off limits to all foreigners, but Kawaguchi managed to coss the Himalayas on an unpatrolled path, posing as a Chinese monk and taking almost 4 years to reach Lhasa.         Heidi

The first illustrated edition, in a Royal binding by Riviere with the sovereign crown to the front board, with the Cipher of Princess Mary(only daughter of George V) dated 1909 (later Viscountess Lascelles and later still, Countess of Harewood) to the front pastedown, also with the bookplate and Red Seal Monogram of her eldest son, Viscount Lascelles (b. 1923) to the front endpaper and pastedown, suggesting that he either inherited the book, or perhaps received it as a gift. Princess Mary was born in 1897, so the 1909 date and the Sovereign crown would indicate that this was a present from George V and Queen Mary of Teck during her twelfth year. Full vellum binding, externally with some very minor marks, bumps and rubs, also slight bowing of the boards. The text block, with gilt to all edges, is lightly toned, but free from foxing. An uncommon edition of Heidi, in a beautiful binding with a superb association and provenance.

Verlag "Reiss".         Zeppelin.

Paris. No date. 1909. - Color lithograph, matted, visible image approximately 32 1/2 x 15 inches. The lithograph was matted and framed in the 1980s, but will be removed from the frame for delivery. Visible image has 9 small foxing spots in the image; print has not been examined outside the frame, but based on other prints framed at the same time and place, there is a toned line on the print along the mat window edge and brown adhesive paper tape along the edges of the sheet where the print was attached to the backing. The verso of the print is browned from the wood backing that was used in the frame. The lithograph could be deacidified and the tape removed; however as it stands it would display very well with the light brown line from matburn either covered or used as an accent line around the image. A particularly striking image of a Zeppelin flying over what is likely the Rhine river, complete with a castle in the cliffs and storks flying. Ernest Montaut (1879-1909) and his atelier produced a series of striking lithographic posters documenting the excitement engendered by new developments at the turn of the twentieth century: automobiles, planes and dirigibles.
