[Binding, Fine- Stopes, Winifred] Selected Poems

London: Methuen & Co., 1909. Superbly bound by Winifred Stopes in full crimson crushed morocco with magnificent center gilt four-part flower motif in gold which highlights and offsets a gilt tooled leaf and stem design, very innovative. Spine with five raised bands, gilt lettering, dentelles with double gilt ruled lines, Signed in rear dentelle in gilt: "19 - W. STOPES - 00." An extremely early binding by Stopes, if not one of the earliest known. Stopes became a pupil of Ethel Taunton in about 1903 and exhibited in many of the top shows of the period, including "The Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society," first appearing in 1906. From "The Public Lives of Charlotte and Marie Stopes," by Stephanie Green: "Winnie had finished her training as a bookbinder [1907] and operated a little business from home at this time, producing neatly bound volumes often commissioned by [by her sister's] friends. A most scarce and historically important binding. A superb, fine copy, with only the faintest wear on cover gilt blocking, an unavoidable circumstance.

Mammoth Plate Photograph of the School Children's Parade at the Hudson-Fulton Celebration

New York. 1909. Large albumen image on thick card. Image is 13.75" x 11" on 20" x 16" mount. small chip and small, light dampstain in right margin not effecting the image, Image is perhaps a little faded, but clear and very near fine. Slightly faded handwritten caption in ink beneath the image: "Hudson-Fulton Celebration / School Children's Parade / October 2, 1909 / Head of Column - 16th District." [With Souvenir Program]: Historical Pageant. Hudson-Fulton Celebration. September 25 to October 9, 1909. New York: Redfield Brothers, 1909. Small quarto. 64pp., illustrated. Small chips at the edges of the yapped wrappers, very good. The image shows a dozen or so bowler and top-hatted men standing in front of a block long or longer row of children in marching order, many with small American flags. Probably taken from the side of the road, the warehouse walls in the background are neatly covered with huge posters for theatrical performances. Some distinctive buildings in the background lead us to believe that anyone with a reasonable knowledge of New York landmarks could identify the location with relative ease. There is some indication from signs on the buildings that this might be 14th Street. The Hudson-Fulton Celebration was a fortnight long, beyond-elaborate commemoration of the 300th Anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery of the Hudson River, and the 100th Anniversary of Robert Fulton's first successful use of the paddle wheel steam boat, and was used as a showcase to display the importance of New York City in all it's might and splendor. The parades showcased various periods in New York history, and were interspersed by large marching groups from ethnic social clubs: Irish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, etc. It also showcased various modes of transportation and featured Wilbur Wright flying up the Hudson River. The Celebration was commemorated in many ways including a run of commemorative stamps, and innumerable postcards. However, this is a wonderful image of what would have to be one of the more prosaic of the groups, sandwiched we assume between the elaborate floats depicting historical events, and elaborately costumed clubs. An image of rank-upon-rank of school children in an unusually large format, and is thus very uncommon. .

The accompanying text is his daughter's reflections of the city with a special emphasis on its life and art. Between the two so many aspects and sights and memories of Paris are here captured forever. We see the great gardens, cathedrals and other landmarks of course, but equally important to the Menpes were the potato peelers and gossipers, fruits and markets and flowers, the bookseller and fish stalls and factories. This is one of Adam and Charles Black's finest productions, well fitting to the city it illustrates.

The Isolation of an Ion, a Precision Measurement of its Charge, and the Correction of Stokes's Law

New York: Physical Review. FIRST EDITION OFFPRINT. Wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, EXTREMELY RARE OFFPRINT, of Millikan's first comprehensive account of his famous oil-drop experiment to determine the value of electron charge; consequently providing proof for the quantization of electric charge. "In 1909 Millikan started on a project that was to win for him the 1923 Nobel Prize for physics -- the determination of the electric charge of an electron. His apparatus consisted of two horizontal plates that could be made to take opposite charges. Between the plates he introduced a fine spray of oil drops whose mass could be determined by measuring their fall under the influence of gravity and against the resistance of the air. When the air was ionized by x-rays and the plates charged, then an oil drop that had collected a charge would be either repelled from or attracted to the plates depending on whether it had collected a positive or negative charge. By measuring the change in the rate of fall and knowing the intensity of the electric field Millikan was able to calculate the charges on the oil drops. After taking many careful measurements he was able to come to the important conclusion that the charge was always a simple multiple of the same basic unit..." (Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists). "For Millikan, and for most of the physics community, these results established the quantization of charge. The value that Millikan found in 1911 for the fundamental unit of charge, the charge on the electron, was 4.891 x 10(-10) esu" (Allan Franklin, Selectivity and Discord: Two Problems of Experiment). In his later 1913 paper, Millikan refined the number to 4.774 +/- 0.009 x 10(-10) esu, "a figure whose accuracy was not improved until 1928" (ibid.). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "First conclusive measurement of the charge of the electron. Nobel Prize to R.A. Millikan awarded in 1923 'for his work on the elementary charge of electricity and on the photo-electric effect'." Note: A short preliminary report of Millikan's work was published the previous year in Science, vol. 32, with the same title. OFFPRINT FROM: Physical Review, vol. XXXII, No. 4, April 1911, pp. 349-397. Octavo, early (not original) wrappers; the original wrappers are lacking. A touch of nearly invisible dampstaining evident at the bottom margin of some leaves. RARE: We know only of the Plotnick copy of the offprint that has been on the market.

        Liberalism and the Social Problem

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1909. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a superior, collector grade copy of the first edition, first printing of Churchill's third book of speeches (following Mr. Brodrick's Army and For Free Trade). Liberalism and the Social Problem dates from Churchill's period as an ardent reformer and a bright star of the Liberal Party. In 1904, Churchill quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class. In 1909, when Liberalism and the Social Problem was published, Churchill had just been promoted to a Cabinet position. His 21 speeches in this volume address a broad range of social issues still topical today, with the young Churchill trying to chart a progressive course between reactionary conservatism and radical socialism. Churchill would remain a member of the Liberal Party until their ruinous electoral defeat in the 1922 General Election. Churchill rejoined the Conservatives in 1924. The British first edition is bound in a deep red cloth stamped in gilt on the spine and bearing Churchill's gilt-stamped facsimile signature on the front cover. The binding is attractive, but proved fragile, the smooth, thin cloth susceptible to wear and the spine quite susceptible to toning and dulling. This copy is scarce thus, in near fine condition, superior to nearly all copies we encounter. The cloth binding remains beautifully square, clean, and tight. The spine remains nicely rounded and the gilt strong, with only very slight sunning of the red color, which remains bright. Wear is trivial, primarily confined to wrinkling at the spine ends and tiny bumps to the lower corners. The contents are equally noteworthy, bright for the edition with a crisp feel. The book seems unread. We find no previous ownership marks. Spotting is very light, confined to pastedowns, page edges, and occasional intrusions to inner page margins, mostly in the first and final leaves. About as good a copy as we see without a dust jacket, and we know of only two jacketed examples. The book is protected within a stout, dark red cloth slipcase with rounded, leather-trimmed opening.
