        The Haunted Man

J.M. DENT E.P. DUTTON. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1907. Hardcover. An attractive book, very clean pages, beautifully decorated covers with bright gold title block, no dustjacket, front hinge is starting to crack but book is still nicely intact. ; One of the grand masters of Victorian literature, Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors' prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and "slave" factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years' formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney's clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work. .

The Story of Venus and Tannhauser

London: For Private Circulation, 1907., 1907. Limited Edition on Japanese vellum. Quarto. Bound in contemporary blue cloth, with paper title label to front board; front edge uncut. This edition limited to 300 copies, of which 50 are on Japanese vellum, and this is copy number 1. Binding is a little rubbed, slightly frayed at corners and spine ends, title label slightly chipped and with some tanning. Internally clean and free from spotting with some tanning to margins. Otherwise known as "Under the Hill", this is the original form of the unfinished erotic novel by Beardsley, based on the Tannhauser legend. The legend was brought to international attention by Wagner's opera, "Tannhauser", and tells the story of a knight who travels to Venus' underground palace of the senses, returns to the ordinary world to seek forgiveness from the Pope, who refuses, and then returns to spend eternity in the delights of Venusberg.

- Tadellos erhalten.         Die Baukunst Konstantinopels [Architecture of Constantinople]

Berlin, Germany: Verlegt Bei Ernst Wasmuth, 1907. Dies ist nicht eine zweisprachige Ausgabe. Text in Deutsch, nicht in Englisch. Erste Ausgabe. This is not a bilingual edition. Text in German only, not in English. Many but not all of the plates with subtitles in Turkish, beneath the German. The author's foreword is dated April 1907, Dresden. The title page bears the date 1907. Allmost certainly the first printing of the first edition. Present are Volumes 1 and 2 of a 3-volume set. NOT ex library. The first volume consists of text pages 1-76 [leaving off in mid-sentence], plus 64 single-page plates and 2 double-page fold-out plates. The second volume consists of 101 single-page plates and 2 double-page fold-out plates. The missing Volume 3 presumably contained text pages 77- 112, and 31 additional plates. 20.25 x 13.75 inches. [51.5 x 35 cm.] Later brown cloth and marbled boards. Bindings heavily worn, one board detached. Some of the plates are exceptionally clean. Many of the plates with fingering or soiling marks, largely confined to the margins. For the most part the fingering marks erase off cleanly. By Cornelius Gurlitt (1850-1938). A rare and important study of the architecture of Istanbul (Constantinople) concentrating mainly on religious buildings. Includes major mosques of the Ottomans, as well as Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, and Hagia Theodoros. Plates show interior and exterior views, architectural detail, street scenes, etc. The archival photogravures are significant not only as architectural documentation but also as contributing to ethnographic knowledge. Offered as a collection of plates. Rated Good Minus. According to Mavi Buncuk, "The book, written between 1907 and 1912, presents a complete account of the architectural scene in Istanbul. It is one of the most complete works to be undertaken up to that time. The German Ambassador, Fieldmarshal von Bieberstein, was instrumental in gaining permission for Gurlitt to take photographs and draw sketches of mosques and other religious edifices so that Gurlitt was able to put into his book many architectural works that had never been presented before. In his book, Gurlitt evaluates the architectural movement which began at the time when Istanbul came under Turkish rule as a Renaissance different from and independent of the one which began in Italy. Examining the buildings of the Byzantine and Ottoman periods in chronological sequence, Gurlitt includes both photographs and detailed sketches of these.". First Edition. Hard Cover. Good Minus. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall.

Verlegt Bei Ernst Wasmuth, 1907, Hard Cover, Book Condition: Good Minus, First EditionSize: Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall, Dies ist nicht eine zweisprachige Ausgabe. Examining the buildings of the Byzantine and Ottoman periods in chronological sequence, Gurlitt includes both photographs and detailed sketches of these."
