RACKHAM, Arthur.
London 1906. Ink and watercolour on paper (179 x 258 mm), within original buff card mount, outlined in black and grey ink and gold paper, glazed with UV protection glass in the original Leicester Galleries gilt frame (430 x 528 mm). Small chip to lower right corner of frame, few faint marks to mount, tape renewed around the verso of the frame where the watercolour has been removed for examination; excellent condition in the original frame. Signed and dated by Rackham, this original watercolour features the scene where Peter steers his little nest-ship, built for him by the thrushes, into Kensington Gardens. After the enormous success of the play Peter Pan, which opened on 27 December 1904 and broke all previous theatrical records, Barrie sanctioned the publication, in collaboration with Rackham as illustrator. The text was extracted, with minor revisions, from Barrie's book-within-a-book in his London story-collection for adults, The Little White Bird (1902), and it was published specifically as a children's gift book in 1906. This painting, along with all the other originals from the book Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, was exhibited by Ernest Brown & Phillips at the Leicester Galleries, December 1906, and has two exhibition labels on the verso: the Ernest Brown & Phillips label; and another printed exhibition label with the date and other details entered by hand, noting this as no. 21 in the exhibition, sold to the Hon. Walter James [i.e. Walter John James, 3rd Baron Northbourne (1869-1932)]. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Cambridge: The Riverside Press, 1906. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Limited Edition. Number 158 of 220 copies on American handmade paper. Designed by Bruce Rogers. Set in French lettre bâtarde and civilité types and hand printed in black, red, blue, and golden brown; opening initial printed in gold. 11.5" x 17.5". xxxiv double-column pages. Seven hand-coloured illustrations in the style of stained glass windows. Bound in quarter vellum with fleur-de-lis patterned boards and vellum tips. Bruce Rogers (1870-1957) was one of the great book designers of the twentieth century. He began working at the Riverside Press in 1895. In 1900, a Department of Special Bookmaking was created for the production of fine press editions, with Rogers in charge. He designed more than four hundred books during his career. Of those, he chose thirty (Roger's Thirty), at the request of an interviewer, that he considered successful book works. The Song of Roland was one of his choices. The Song of Roland is a French epic dating from about 1100 CE. It recounts the chivalric and heroic deeds of Charlemagne, based on the battle of Roncevaux. The epic is considered the first masterpiece of literature in the French vernacular, written as a medieval chanson de geste (song of deeds) in four thousand lines. It was not translated into English until the late 19th century. This edition was translated from Old French by Isabel Butler. Seven illustrations derived from the compartments of the window of Charlemagne in the Cathedral de Chartres depict events in the legend of Roland. [SUDANESE RAILWAY].
London: McCorquodale & Co., Limited, Cardington Street, London, N.W, 1906. The line was constructed to connect Khartoum with the sea, heretofore a rail-line had been built north from Khartoum to Wadi Halfa on the Nile some 100 miles south of the Egyptian State Railway terminus at Aswan but this railway did not help to open up the country to commerce or give the British security. Sudan had come under British control soon after the Mahdist Revolt in 1898 so it was thought that a link to the Red Sea would facilitate the opening up of the country to commerce through the newly created Port Sudan and also protect the country form any further insurgency. The album includes photographs of ancient port of Suakin; the building of harbours, distillation plant, workshops, railway sheds, pontoons, steam cranes, views of the unforgiving plains and hills along the route, 'Camp of the Advanced Party,' 'The First Day's Work.' several views of camps, working parities embankments, railheads cuttings, station buildings, bridge erection, water tanks, engines, wagons, and all the clutter of railway construction.

David Wondrich and Robert Hess have referred to the 1895 printing of this title as the first printed reference for the Old Fashioned, and Ted Haigh mentioned it in Vintage Spirits & Forgotten Cocktails as the original reference for the Widow's Kiss. Very Good, nice vintage bookstore sticker at lower front panel, some darkening to wraps, light stain at lower rear cover. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Twain, Mark]
De Vinne Press, New York, 1906. Number 157 of a limited run of 250 numbered copies. Second issue, as usual, with p. 131 ending, "thinks about | it" (APG). Original blue-gray boards, morocco label, gilt, original box. A fresh, Fine copy in a Near Fine box that has survived nicely, with just a bit of bumping to the rear panel. One of the major works of Twain's late years, here he sets forth his Deterministic philosophy using Socratic dialogue form. Twain originally published the work anonymously, even concealing his identity from the publisher. The author's earnest debate on the nature of man, free will and destiny. A work that influenced science fiction writer Isaac Asimov in his book, ". . . That Thou Art Mindful of Him" completing the biblical verse quoted by Twain for his title, Psalm 8-4. Because Twain had the print run delivered directly to his home, giving away only an estimated eight copies in his final years, the remainder of the run disappeared for a time after his death. Copies began resurfacing in the 1930s and again in the 1950s in New York, predominantly sold through Seven Gables Bookshop. They have again become scarce in recent years. BAL 3490. The Riverside Press, Cambridge, 1906. Number 158 of 220 copies on American handmade paper. Designed by Bruce Rogers. Set in French lettre bâtarde and civilité types and hand printed in black, red, blue, and golden brown; opening initial printed in gold. 11.5? x 17.5?. xxxiv double-column pages. Of those, he chose thirty (Roger?s Thirty), at the request of an interviewer, that he considered successful book works. Five roundels are placed throughout the text. Some browning to boards, surface da … [Click Below for Full Description]

Correspondances. Lippmann, F. [Lippmann, Friedrich]; [Lehrs, Maxwell: Reviser]; [Hardy, Martin: Translator]
London: H. Grevel and Co., 1906. Third Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. An essentially Fine copy of the third and best edition, and the first edition to have been translated into English (with foxing to the boards as is usual with this title and with the closed page block's top edge in gilt) in a Fine dust jacket (with some foxing to the front and rear panels as well as to the jacket's verso --- we do not know how common such foxing is to the dust jacket as this is the only jacket for this first edition that we ever have seen). Lippmann was a German art historian, served as the Director of the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin State Museums, and was noted for his work on Dürer, Holbein and Italian 15th-century woodcuts. The New York Evening Post described this book as: "...the best concise treatise ever written about the history of intanglio prints. There are 131 illustrations on the scale of the original engravings, and while these impressions from relief-blocks inevitably lack the quality of fine engravings, they suffice to study the techniq of the artists." This third edition, issued after Lippmann's death in 1903, is a revised edition of Lippmann's work was prepared by his successor in office, Max Lehrs, contains 131 illustrations, and still wears its QUITE SCARCE early turn of the century dust jacket. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

DUNSANY, Lord.
London: William Heinemann, 1906. Octavo. Original green cloth-backed brown boards, titles to spine and front cover in gilt, pictorial onlay to front board, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Minor rubbing to spine ends and top edge of boards, offsetting to endpapers else contents notably fresh; a near-fine copy. Frontispiece and 9 full-page illustrations by Sidney H. Sime. First edition, first impression, of this influential fantasy text, with a four-page autograph letter signed from the author to William Roughead tipped-in to the front free endpaper, and Roughead's bookplate to the front pastedown. Roughead (1870-1952) was a Scottish lawyer and popular true crime author with whom Dunsany shared a long-held correspondence and book exchange. The present letter, written on Clovelly Court headed paper in early 1912 mentions the upcoming publication of both Yeats's edited Selections from the Writings of Lord Dunsany, printed at the Cuala Press in March 1912, and his The Book of Wonder, published by Heinemann in November of that year. In 1914 Roughead dedicated his work The Trial of Mary Blandy to Dunsany; the letter here was written to thank Roughead for the forthcoming honour, "I've never yet had the pleasure of having a book dedicated to me and should be delighted if you are kind enough to do as you suggest. Thank you very much also for sending me the book. I have not started on it yet, I am sure I shall enjoy it when I do". Lord Dunsany was "unquestionably one of the most important writers of heroic fantasy of the century; a writer of great originality and charm" (Bleiler). Ti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Winston S. Churchill
Lord Randolph Churchill Winston S. Churchill London: Macmillan and Company, 1906 First edition Condition: Very Good This is a first edition set of Winston Churchill's biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. The first edition, only printing, is aesthetically pleasing, featuring deep red cloth, untrimmed page edges, gilt stamping, and the family coat of arms on the front covers. However, the red cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to fading and wear and the contents to heavy spotting. First edition sets are not especially uncommon, but collector worthy sets are scarce. Here is a quite respectable set in very good condition. The red cloth bindings remain square and tight with negligible color shift between the covers and spine. Wear is modest, mostly confined to hinges and extremities with minor bumps to the upper Volume I corners and light scuffing to the boards. Shelf presentation is quite good, the red color well-preserved, soiling confined to a faint stain affecting the "CHU" in the Volume I title. The contents of both volumes remain bright with no previous ownership marks, though spotted intermittently throughout. The top and bottom edges show shelf dust, the untrimmed fore edges some age toning in addition to spotting. Winston Churchill's biography of his father focuses on Lord Randolph's career in Parliament after 1880. Winston Churchill's father, Lord Randolph, died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political career. His son Winston was 20 years old. When he first contemplated writing his fa … [Click Below for Full Description]

JACKSON, C.S, and compiled by Marion Jackson
Lynn, Massachusetts: Rumford Supply Co, 1906. Unique botany journal. An unbound, half leather, string tied portfolio containing twenty-six folded signatures, each with a unique dried, and pressed botany sample mounted with descriptive notations on the opposite page. The portfolio was manufactured as a blank notebook by the Rumford Supply Co. of Lynn, Massachusetts; an additional page of notebook paper laid-in with a numbered contents list and Marion Jackson's name signed. Jackson apparently assembled the plant samples, each of which is artfully arranged, pressed, and attached to the page with tiny mounts. Altogether, a charming and beautiful presentation. Most of the delicate botany samples are fully intact, but a few have come loose from the mountings. On most sheets, plants have stained the opposite page with an impression. Overall, an exceptionally preserved and artfully made object. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Very fine frontispiece of a lute player printed in four colors, woodcut border on first page of text (both of these with original tissue guards), decorative woodcut initials in red, and printer's device on final page, all designed by Lucien Pissarro and engraved by Esther Pissarro. Printed in red and black; many pages with printed music. Urbanelli, p. 123; Ransom, p. 263; Tomkinson, p. 65. Slight opening to gutter at title page, but an immaculate copy in an unworn binding. This is a typically charming volume--here presenting music from the works of a prominent Jacobean playwright--produced by an English private press noted for small, gentle volumes featuring colored wood engravings with a French flavor. Excepting only Shakespeare, Ben Jonson (1572-1637) was the most important literary figure of his age, and for the 21 years that he lived after Shakespeare's death, Jonson was the unquestioned ruler in all things literary. In 1616, he was the first playwright to publish his collected dramatic works, and in the same year, he became England's first (though unofficial) poet laureate. Nobody before or after him has ever displayed the fascinating characters of London so vividly on the stage. Operated between 1894 and World War I by Lucien and Esther Pissarro, the Eragny Press produced charming books of … [Click Below for Full Description]
