William Penn
The Lakeside Press,, Chicago, 1906. Very good+ in dark green cloth covered boards with gilt decorations and borders on the front board and gilt text stamping on the spine with a faint dampness stain at the extreme lower margin of the front end pages to page 27 none of which impacts on any printed text. The Lakeside Press logo on the front board is very slightly tarnished, but the gilt text on the spine is very clear and bright. This is the smallest of the Lakeside Classics in terms of both weight and width being only 130 pages (129 numbered). The full title reads: "Fruits of Solitude Reflections and Maxims Relating to the Conduct of Human Life." The fourth Lakeside Classic issued at Christmas time in 1906. It is considered by many collectors as either the first or second most difficult copy to obtain in this series. The book was first published in England anonymously in 1693. According to the introductory notes by John Vance Cheney in this volume "two editions and a reprint were published the same year." The Lakeside Press used an eleventh edition of the title printed in Philadelphia in 1794 as the foundation for this copy. A very handsome, clean and collectible copy! [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SIMON, André L.
Wyman & Sons 1907 1909, 1906. Three volumes, all first editions. 8vo. Original dark green cloth titles and vignettes in gilt. Top edge gilt. Volumes I and III signed by Simon, volume II inscribed by him to friend and fellow wine merchant, "To V. Masraff from André Simon." An unusually bright set, in very good condition indeed. The books use a heavy stock which means that rarely do they survive in decent condition. Twenty photographic plates, plus a fold out panoramic view of Bordeaux in 1669 split between volumes two and three. Simon's monumental early work on the wine trade, comprehensively covering it in all its forms from the earliest time to the end of the seventeenth century. Rarely encountered as a complete work due to the poor selling of the first volume. "Volume I sold so poorly that the 'prints' of Vols. II and III were drastically reduced. Consequently Vols. II and III are rare, although Vol. I can sometimes be found. Essential reference works." - Gabler (Wine into Words) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

BEARDSLEY, Aubrey
Leonard Smithers, 1906. First edition. Number 40 of 120 sets. Five loose plates printed on japon, preceded by a title leaf, colophon leaf and contents leaf. All housed in the original brick-red paper portfolio. A near fine set, with minor wear to the portfolio. Small marks to the bottom edge of a few sheets, but nothing affecting the images which are clean. Bookplate to the inside of the portfolio. Five drawings are reproduced, with three plates illustrating Juvenal's 'Sixth Satire' and two unused illustrations from Lucian's True History. An uncommon set of Beardsley illustrations, collected, printed and issued anonymously by Leonard Smithers, who introduces them on the colophon leaf: "This issue contains five exceedingly brilliant Drawings by the late Aubrey Beardsley which have been regarded as too free in design for general circulation. These Drawings are printed from the original blocks, and as only a few engravers proofs have previously been pulled, the impressions are perfectly clear, and may be regarded as proofs." This set of illustrations represent Smithers's final publication of the artist, having "sustained and enhanced Beardsley's posthumous reputation" (James G. Nelson, Publisher To The Decadents, 2010) [Attributes: First Edition]

Churchill Winston
London: Macmillan and Co Limited, 1906. 2 volumes. First edition. With 18 illustrations including two fine photogravure frontispieces. Large, thick 8vo, handsomely bound in three-quarter red morocco over marbled paper covered boards, the spine with raised bands, gilt tooling of British lions as central pieces and gilt lettering within the compartments, all edges uncut. xvii, 564; 523, index pp. A very pleasing set. Quite handsome copies of both volumes, bright and clean and very well preserved throughout. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. Winston's very successful biography of his MP father. William Manchester, Winston's biographer, considered it, despite the son's apparently ambivalent feelings toward his father, "a tribute to filial devotion." "Outside Parliament, Churchill devoted much of his time during 1904 and 1905 to compiling a biography of Lord Randolph. He was motivated in part by a desire for an intimate knowledge of his father that had been denied him during Lord Randolph's lifetime... When the book emerged in 1906, it was widely hailed as one of the best political biographies in English and its prose style is still greatly admired today... Contemporary readers were struck by the frankness and openness of the account, contrasting favourably with the pious acts of homage served up as biography by other sons of famous fathers. It was, after all, a study in failure rather than success. The writing of the biography marked the point at which Churchill at last outgrew his father's memory" (Grant, 47).

Winston S. Churchill
London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a first edition set of Winston Churchill's biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. The first edition, only printing, is aesthetically pleasing, featuring deep red cloth, untrimmed page edges, gilt stamping, and the family coat of arms on the front covers. However, the red cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to fading and wear and the contents to heavy spotting. First edition sets are not especially uncommon, but collector worthy sets are scarce. Here is a very good set, not fine but nonetheless less affected by the usual flaws than most sets we encounter. The red cloth bindings remain respectably tight and clean. Wear and scuffing are modest and the spines show only light, uniform toning. Hence shelf presentation is quite good for the edition. The contents of both volumes are bright. Each front pastedown bears the same decorative bookplate, corroborating that this is a lifelong mated pair. The only other ownership mark is a tiny bookshop sticker affixed to the lower right Vol. I front pastedown, reading “GEORGE’S” of “Park Street. Bristol”. The endpapers are browned. Spotting is light for the edition, intermittent within Vol. I, substantially confined to only the untrimmed for edges of Vol. II. Winston Churchill’s biography of his father focuses on Lord Randolph's career in Parliament after 1880. Lord Randolph died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political car … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRAND, Adolf
Charlottenburg (1906). Charlottenburg (1906). Adolf Brand (1875-1945) was one of the most important and controversial gay activists in pre-War Germany. This publication "of male culture, art and literature" was the most important German gay journal and first appeared in 1896 and continued until 1931. Brand was arrested on several occasions for his outspoken beliefs and many issues of his magazine were routinely confiscated. This copy is Band VI and contains photographs by von Gloeden, artwork by Jaeger, essays by numerous hands, including Sagitta (John Henry MacKay); Otto Kiefer; Peter Hamecher and many others. The illustrations are all tipped onto colored papers and this edition is the only one issued in decorative hardcover bindings. Internally very good, decorative boards a bit worn at head and tale of spine, small closed tear on spine, a few small marks on rear cover, but good otherwise. Two penned signatures on colophon page. MAYNE, Xavier (Edward Prime-Stevenson)
Naples: The English Book-Press: R. Rispoli (1906). sm. 8vo. [6], 205, [3]. original grey wrappers printed in red, [vi], 205, [3] pp. 1st Edition. Naples: The English Book-Press: R. Rispoli (1906). sm. 8vo. [6], 205, [3]. original grey wrappers printed in red, [vi], 205, [3] pp. 1st Edition. Soft cover. First edition of the first novel by an American with both an explicit gay theme and a sympathetic attitude toward its gay characters. Styled a "little psychological romance" by the author, the novel recounts the growing love between a middle-aged British aristocrat and a Hungarian military officer. According to the colophon, Imre was "Privately printed in a limited edition," and, although the limitation is unstated, scholars have long debated the publishing history of this book, as well as that of the author's other great work on homosexuality, The Intersexes. Although it appears that Imre was ostensibly issued in an edition of 500 copies, the book is far rarer than The Intersexes, which was limited to only 100 numbered copies. Scholars agree that the prime reason for the scarcity of Imre is because many copies were destroyed in the great Messina earthquake of 1908. Edward I. Stevenson was born in New Jersey in 1868 and, although he passed the state bar examination, he began writing books instead. Writing under his own name, his literary output ranged from several novels for boys with faintly Uranian tones to various collections of short stories and music criticism. But his greatest legacies, by far, were Imre and The Intersexes, not just rarities of early 20th-century Americ … [Click Below for Full Description]

EINSTEIN, ALBERT
Leipzig: Annalen der Physik, 1906. Contemporary half dark green roan. Rubbed, some chipping, separation at upper joint. Library markings.FIRST EDITION of "On the Theory of Light Production and Light Absorption" (pp. 199-206). This classic in the history of physics is Einstein's second paper on the photoelectric effect. Einstein reconciles his and Planck's independent derivations of the blackbody formula E=hν. Planck's derivation of this formula ascribed it to a restriction on the energy changes possible when radiation is produced or absorbed by matter, which implied no restriction on the energies of either matter or radiation. Einstein's 1905 derivation ascribed it to a restriction on the energy of radiation alone, but in this paper, he proposes the modern idea that the energies of both matter and radiation are quantized, which led to his work on quantum specific heats.[and]FIRST EDITION of "The Principle of Conservation of Motion of the Center of Gravity and the Inertia of Energy" (pp. 627-633). In this "ingenious thought experiment involving energy transport in a hollow cylinder, Einstein returned to the relationship between inertial mass and energy, giving more general arguments for their complete equivalence" (Calaprice, The Einstein Almanac). This is the first statement that the conservation of mass is a special case of the conservation of energy.

All edges gilt, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers. Hand-lettered title page and text throughout. Each leaf individually matted and hinged into book, featuring a watercolor and text in verse below it. 6 full-page original watercolors, including one signed and dated by Dulac. Housed in a custom velvet lined, crimson cloth clamshell box. Bookplate of Herchel V. Jones, the publisher of the Minnepolis Journal and a noted book collector, laid in. Finished original manuscript by Dulac of King Henry, his knights on horseback, medieval lords and a nervous Earl Hugh Bigod and his castle of Bungaye. The colors and style are most reminiscent of Dulac's ABC: Lyrics Pathetic and Humorous, published two years after this manuscript. This tale would appear as a full-page color illustration in the Christmas 1906 issue of the GRAPHIC. A stunning piece of original art by Dulac. Finished Dulac manuscripts with watercolors are rare, and this one is fabulous in content as well as in presentation.

1906. Very Good. Lippmann, F. [Lippmann, Friedrich]; [Lehrs, Maxwell: Reviser]; [Hardy, Martin: Translator]Engraving and Etching: A Handbook for the Use of Students and Print Collectors London: H. Grevel and Co., 1906. Third Edition. Hardcover. An essentially Fine copy of the third and best edition, and the first edition to have been translated into English (with foxing to the boards as is usual with this title and with the closed page block's top edge in gilt) in a Fine dust jacket (with some foxing to the front and rear panels as well as to the jacket's verso --- we do not know how common such foxing is to the dust jacket as this is the only jacket for this first edition that we ever have seen). Lippmann was a German art historian, served as the Director of the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin State Museums, and was noted for his work on Dürer, Holbein and Italian 15th-century woodcuts. The New York Evening Post described this book as: "...the best concise treatise ever written about the history of intanglio prints. There are 131 illustrations on the scale of the original engravings, and while these impressions from relief-blocks inevitably lack the quality of fine engravings, they suffice to study the techniq of the artists." This third edition, issued after Lippmann's death in 1903, is a revised edition of Lippmann's work was prepared by his successor in office, Max Lehrs, contains 131 illustrations, and still wears its QUITE SCARCE early turn of the century dust jacket. Wells, Herbert George
London: Macmillan and Co, 1906. Second issue (as always). Near fine.. Original full green cloth, front board gilt-lettered and blind-stamped in fruit pattern, gilt-lettered spine. Top edge gilt. 6 pages of ads, then 8-page publisher's catalogue at rear dated 20.8.06. viii, 305, [1], [6], [8] pages. Inscribed in ink on front free endpaper, "To Pinnie / from H.G." Faint bumping to corners and spine extremities, spot to fore edge: overall fresh and bright, with sound hinges. First edition, inscribed to his mother-in-law "Pinnie," who lived with Wells during the period he published his greatest works, including THE TIME MACHINE and WAR OF THE WORLDS. Wells started his career spinning fantastic tales to make money, but soon began to use his novels to explore political reform. Well known for exploring the kind of scientific crisis imagined in this work -- that of a comet passing by the earth -- Wells is less known today for his views on socialism and polyamory, which become the focus of the drama here. It was first serialized in THE DAILY CHRONICLE. While this copy is called a "second issue" by bibliographers, only one copy of the "first issue" is known, deposited at the British Library before publication and thus thought to be a proof copy. This copy is inscribed to the mother of Catherine "Jane" Robbins, Wells's second wife. Because Wells had begun living with her daughter while he was still legally married to his first wife, Mrs. Robbins at first did not approve of the relationship. Recently widowed and under financial strain, Mrs. Robbins nevertheless moved in with the coup … [Click Below for Full Description]

Emerson, Ralph Waldo
Hammersmith: The Doves Press, 1906. Fine.. Small quarto, original full limp vellum, spine lettered in gilt. With preface by Thomas Carlyle. Colophon at rear; one of 300 copies on paper out of a total print run of 325. Printed in Doves type in red and black ink. 312 pages. Ink inscription from William James III to Alice Runnells on first leaf, bookplate to front pastedown. The magisterial Doves Press edition of Emerson's "first series" of essays, including "Self-Reliance" and other foundational works of American Transcendentalism. Doves printer and binder T.J. Cobden-Sanderson had met Emerson when the former was only in his twenties, a memory that would remain with him for decades: "his patient endurance of a young man's talk, who should rather have listened as the two walked together the length of Pall Mall" (Tidcombe). Emerson would become the only American writer ever published by the Doves Press. Emerson's influence within the United States was even more profound, including upon Henry and William James, whose father hosted Emerson whenever he was passing through. Henry records that Emerson carried himself with "a tone alien, beautifully alien, to any we had roundabout." This is a James family copy, inscribed by philosopher William James's son (and Henry's nephew), the artist William James III, to his future wife Alice Rutherford Runnells at the James family country house. A remarkable American crossover within the otherwise English-focused Doves Press.

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1906. Near fine.. Original full gilt-stamped vellum binding. Featuring 50 mounted color plates with tissue guards (in rear of book) and with black & white drawing on title page and endpapers. Housed in a custom quarter goatskin solander case. Lacking ties, as common. 1907 ink owner name on front free endpaper. Slightest bit of cover soil and some very minor foxing. Signed limited true first edition, one of only 500 copies signed by Rackham. Before the Peter Pan as we know him today took full form in J.M. Barrie's 1904 play, an infant Peter Pan first appeared in Barrie's book THE LITTLE WHITE BIRD (1902). After the success of the play, Hodder & Stoughton excerpted the sections from the earlier book to produce this lovely limited edition, which they titled PETER PAN IN KENSINGTON GARDENS. Issued before the trade edition of this title, this illustrated limited edition is the true first. A beautiful copy of one of the scarcest and most desired Rackham limited editions.

This is a highly desirable encyclopedia set. Would make an excellent display set or gift. They are leatherbound. The copyright is 1903-1906. Beautiful marbling on the edge of the pages. Comprising the Arts and Sciences, Literature, History, Biography, Geography, Commerce, Etc.,. These are all from the same collection. The differences in leather color on spine are a common occurrence. The first volume had a piece of paper which says "The Americana - Editors' and Contributors' Edition". Unsure what the difference is between this edition and other editions. See photos. The leather is becoming fragile and scuffs / breaks easily. Some edges of spine, especially on top and bottom, show some damage. The books are in good condition considering that the binding is fragile. A couple books have had the leather binding break on the corner hinge where the covers connect with the spine. See the second to last photo for an example of this. I believe this occured from simply opening the book cover. There is two volumes total that have had this happen. The covers are still held on by the inner paper. The Columbia University Press, 1906. First edition. Hardcover. 8vo. [6], vii-x, 1-90, [3] (publisher's advertisements) pp. Illustrated with thirty-three plates, black and white photographs of the glaciers discussed in the book, the deposits of fossils and sediments found within them, the Newfoundland Ice Sheet, and other places of geological interest. Also includes five fold-out maps in the rear, three of Lake Shaler and two geological maps of the Island of Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and Cape Cod. Royal blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine. The first volume in the Columbia University Geological Series. An interesting association copy, with Professor Frank Leverett's name written on the front pastedown. Laid in is a letter from Professor Frank Leverett (a professor of geology at the University of Michigan) to Professor J.F. Kemp (a geology professor at Columbia University). In his letter to Prof. Kemp, Leverett poses several questions about Dr. Wilson's dissertation (with the relevant page numbers in Wilson's book included). He inquires about the evidence supporting Wilson's hypothesis of a fourth glacial formation that influenced the distribution of sediments and fossils across North America. Dr. Leverett notes that he has read the book with great interest, and asks Dr. Kemp to refer his letter and questions raised in it to Dr. Wilson. Wilson's response to Professor Leverett is also laid in. He addresses each question Leverett poses and refers Leverett to the relevant evidence that he considers to be supportive of his own theory (National Academy of Sci … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Putnam, 1906. First British Edition. First British edition. (Correct first in the English language.) xxii, [ii], 356 pp. Crimson cloth with yellow lettering. Good+ with a few small stain to cloth, foxing to edges, marginal tidemark along fore edge with slight wave, in very rare original dust jacket, chipped at extremities with reddish transfer from cloth in a few spots. A philosophy work that gained a worldwide readership after the Austrian author's dramatic suicide at the age of 23, in the house where Beethoven had died. A Kantian, Weininger divided the human psyche into male and female influences (which he believed were literal substances), presaging many fascist tropes. It also influenced the thought of Ludwig Wittgenstein, August Strindberg, and James Joyce. A 2005 American academic reprint called the book: "[A] prime example of the conflicting discourses central to its time: antisemitism, scientific racism and biologism, misogyny, the cult and crisis of masculinity, psychological introspection versus empiricism, German idealism, the women's movement and the idea of human emancipation, the quest for sexual liberation, and the debates about homosexuality. Combining rational reasoning with irrational outbursts, in the context of today's scholarship, Sex and Character speaks to issues of gender, race, cultural identity, the roots of Nazism, and the intellectual history of modernism and modern European culture."
