        White Fang

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1906. First edition. Title page a cancel, as usual. A Near Fine copy of the book with some previous owner's gift inscriptions to the front end paper and a Jack London bookplate (perhaps a facsimile) attached to the verso of the end-paper. Generally an attractive copy of the book. Jack London's classic novel of the adventures of a domesticated wolf-dog, sometimes viewed as metaphor for the way primitive man came to be civilized. The novel was originally published in serial in Outing magazine, and when it was released proved immensely popular. Indeed, White Fang would help enshrine London as an American household name. It has since been translated into over 89 languages and adapted into multiple films. "His vigorous, incisive style, unconventionality, and sympathetic understanding of nature and of her children in the rough, never combined to better advantage than in "White Fang." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Near Fine. Near Fine.

        Protective and Preferential Import Duties.

London: Macmillan, 1906 - Octavo. Original publisher's cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Bookplate of royal statistical society to pastedown. Tiny split at head of rear joint, cloth slightly faded, tiny crease at head of a few pages, library blindstamp to title page. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Pigou was a staunch freetrader, and "he was at that stage of his career prepared to appear on public platforms where his considerable powers of oratory were put to good effect. A pamphlet, The Riddle of the Tariff, appeared in 1903. A more technical treatment, leaning heavily on the standard Mashallian apparatus and coming out strongly against the policy of Imperial preference, appeared in 1906 on Protective and Preferential Import Duties" (The New Palgrave 3, pp. 876-877). At the time, protective tariffs were a contentious issue, and were a major factor in the landslide defeat of the Conservative Party in the General Election of that year. [Attributes: First Edition]

        MEMOIRS OF MY DEAD LIFE

London: William Heinemann, 1906.. First Edition, with a two page HANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED by Moore regarding the printing and proofs for the book and with the suppressed chapter usually lacking in most copies of the book, laid into a folder, within the slipcase box. 8vo, publisher's original black cloth stamped in blind on the covers and lettered in gilt on the spine, now housed in an attractive custom slipcase morocco backed and gilt paneled. 335pp, plus the 8 page suppressed chapter and 2 page letter. A fine copy with a little reinforcement to the rear hinge. AN EXCELLENT COPY WITH MANUSCRIPT MATERIAL INCLUDED. George Moore is largely regarded as the first major novelist in the realist style in English. As a naturalistic writer, he was amongst the first English-language authors to absorb the lessons of the French realists, and was particularly influenced by the works of Émile Zola. His writings influenced James Joyce, according to the literary critic and biographer Richard Ellmann, and, although Moore's work is sometimes seen as outside the mainstream of both Irish and British literature, he is as often regarded as the first great modern Irish novelist. The author's realism, particularly in its amorous portrayals, managed to get him banned or censored on a number of occasions. Because of his willingness to tackle such issues as prostitution, extramarital sex and lesbianism, Moore's novels were initially met with disapproval. However, as the public's taste for realist fiction grew, this subsided. This work is series of autobiographical sketches, in some of which the love-affairs of the author's early life are realistically set before the reader.

The Audion: A New Receiver for Wireless Telegraphy

New York, N.Y. The American Institute of Electrical Engineers 1906. First Edition. viii, 952 pages. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt spine titles. Minor wear to the extremities of the binding, recently recased with new endpapers. Offered is the entire year of the Transactions of the AIEE, Vol XXV, Jan to Dec 1906, with a volume title page dated 1907 (as normal). The article by De Forest was presented at the 210th Meeting of the AIEE in NY, October 26th, 1906 and is found on page 735. This format of the Transactions includes not only the paper read by De Forest, but the extensive discussion which followed, and also some discussion that occurred in November of the same year at the Philadelphia meeting. Cloth. Edison's invention of the light bulb and the realization of vacuum tubes enabled a revolution in electronics, particularly in the field of wireless communication. Pioneering work was done by John Fleming and others on vacuum tubes, but it was the invention of the Audion by De Forest (which demonstrated the tube's ability to amplify signals) that revolutionized wireless transmission. Shiers (History of Telecommunications Technology) calls this paper the "Pioneering paper on the three-element tube." (Shiers 11-016). This paper was quite early in the development of the device - He had applied for a patent on a three element vacuum tube (not the grid version) on October 25, 1906, one day before his presentation to the AIEE. The first public disclosure of the grid type audion wasn't made until March 14, 1907. Davis in his Electrical and Electronic Technologies notes that De Forest ordered the first grid-type audions in November of 1906 from his tube manufacturer H.W. McCandless & Co, the same time period at which this device was being discussed in the 3rd of the articles in this volume. De Forest won many accolades. The 1922 Medal of Honor from the Institute of Radio Engineers, the 1946 Edison Medal from the AIEE 'For pioneering achievements in radio and for the invention of the grid-controlled vacuum tube with its profound technical and social consequences', and the Edison Medal 'For distinguished contributions to the art of electric communication, notably the regenerative circuit, the superheterodyne and frequency modulation.' (ethw) In Origins of Cyberspace (#203), Norman and Hook suggest that the Audion was the first successful electronic amplifier. An early and important work in the development of wireless, radio, and cradle period telecommunications. Near Fine.

(TV) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The writings of Henry David Thoreau.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Co. [at the Riverside Press], 1906. The Manuscript Edition. Fine/The Houghton Mifflin company published the Manuscript Edition of Thoreau's writings in "standard" brown cloth, but a few deluxe sets were bound in 3/4 levant as offered here. The leather-bound sets come with 40 full-page illustrations that are not present in the standard issue, including a color frontispiece and a "carbon photograph" of a flower in each volume. The manuscript leaf included in this set is from "Cape Cod" (1865), published just after Thoreau's death. It is a passage that interrupts a discourse to muse momentarily on the Cape's prehistory independent of civilization. "It was even then Cape and Bay, --ay, the Cape of Codfish and the Bay of Massachusetts, perchance." This particular passage (which differs somewhat from the published version) is sculpted with penciled corrections.. 23 cm; 20 volumes. 3 portraits, 141 illustrations, most of them photogravure plates by Herbert W. Gleason of scenes described by Thoreau, including two frontispieces in each volume. 20 of the photogravures are hand-colored. Manuscript leaf in Thoreau's hand with several pencil corrections (apparently by the author) bound into volume 1. Printed tissue guards. Red publisher's logo on each title page. Printed on white wove paper watermarked 'Thoreau' within a holly wreath. Bound in 3/4 green levant morocco extra over marbled paper, ruled in gilt, spines with raised bands in six panels decorated and titled in gilt; top edge gilt. Green silk ribbon. Limited to 600 copies, this is set #410, numbered in each volume, signed "Houghton Mifflin Co." on the limitation page. Reference: Borst, B3. Pristine condition.

        Souvenir Kodak Competition 1905

Rochester, NY: Eastman Kodak Co., [1906]. First Edition. Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Near Fine. [14 leaves]; letterpress, offset lithography, and 10 mounted original photographs (including a vignette on the cover). Among the original photographs are prints by Eduard Steichen (Lady and Child, which won first prize in the contest; probably printed from a copy negative); Alfred Stieglitz (Soap Bubbles; believed to have been printed from the original negative); and Harold Baker (The Fairy Tale, 're-developed', according to the caption). Kodak announced a large photography contest for 1905, looking to spur popular adoption of photography. The winning entries were shown in New York and other locations as part of a touring exhibit. The winning images mostly show the influence of the Photo-Secession movement. In addition to reproducing some of the winning entries, Kodak used this publication to showcase various types of photographic paper and processes. The papers used for the original tipped-in prints are Velvet Velox, Portrait Velox, Sepia Paper, Carbon Velox, W-D Platinum, and Mezzo-Tone. The Souvenir was apparently produced in small numbers, perhaps for the New York exhibit at Madison Square Garden Concert Hall in November 1906. In any case, it's rather uncommon now, with just four holdings in OCLC (nos. 4017664 and 195139087). The only sale at auction in recent years was Swann Galleries' 2013 sale no. 2335, lot 20, $5250. First edition (first printing). Complete will all tipped-in images. A near fine copy in wrappers. Corners a bit bumped; some offsetting from tipped in images to the blank facing pages.
