Winston S. Churchill
Lord Randolph Churchill Winston S. Churchill London: Macmillan and Company, 1906 British first edition, only printing Condition: Very Good This first edition, only printing of Winston S. Churchill's biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill, is touchingly inscribed by Lord Randolph's sister, Winston's Aunt Cornelia. Inked in nine lines on the front free endpaper of Volume I, the presentation inscription reads "Ernest Villiers | with love from | Cornelia Wimborne | Jan., 1906 | Gathering from these pages | what he was, you will | understand how a sister | mourns the vanished | hopes of what might have been". Lady Cornelia Henrietta Maria Wimborne (1847-1927) was the eldest daughter of the 7thDuke of Marlborough and sister of Lord Randolph Churchill, who died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political career. Ernest Villiers (1863-1923) was husband to Lady Wimborne's daughter Elaine Augusta Guest. Fittingly, the inscription was concurrent with the start of Villiers' own parliamentary career; he left the clergy to stand as Liberal member for Brighton, a seat held from 1905-1910. When Lord Randolph died, his son, Winston, was 20 years old. Lady Wimborne cared deeply for her nephew, who in his childhood visited frequently to stay with his cousin, her eldest son, Ivor. During one such visit eighteen-year-old Winston quite nearly died after he leapt from a bridge during a game with his brother and cousin. Her support, both emotional and financial, played an important role in catalyzing the political career of Britain's futu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Okakura-Kakuzo
Fox Duffield & Company, New York, 1906. First edition of this classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "Percy MacKaye Your humble acquaintance Kakuzo Okadura." With the inscription written in Japanese script. In near fine condition. Addressed to a western audience, it was originally written in English and is one of the great English tea classics. Okakura had been taught at a young age to speak English and was proficient at communicating his thoughts to the Western mind. In his book, he discusses such topics as Zen and Taoism, but also the secular aspects of tea and Japanese life. The book emphasizes how Teaism taught the Japanese many things; most importantly, simplicity. Kakuzo argues that this tea-induced simplicity affected art and architecture, and he was a long-time student of the visual arts. In the book, Kakuzo states that Teaism, in itself, is one of the profound universal remedies that two parties could sit down to. Kakuzo went on to mention that tea has been the subject of many historical events, such as peace treaties and the like. He ends the book with a chapter on Tea Masters, and spends some time talking about Sen no Rikyu and his contribution to the Japanese tea ceremony. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

[FREETHOUGHT] [WAKEMAN, Thaddeus Burr] WILDE, Oscar
St. Louis: Hermann Schwarz, 1906. First Thus. Hardcover. Provenance: Copy of rationalist Thaddeus Burr Wakeman (1834-1913), given to him on August 24, 1911, on board the S.S. Pennsylvania by a Rachel Lillian Andrews "as a 'good bye,' + my problem to be solved by my visit to the first Monist Congress at Hamburg as Delegate from U.S." (p. [iii]). Throughout his trans-Atlantic journey Wakefield used the rear blank leaves of this volume as a diary of the progress made for his speech to be delivered at the Congress and his German lessons with a Mrs. Austin, broken up with evening dancing and concerts. On Sunday, September 3, Wakefield "Finished pencil copy of speech + began it in ink. More German with Mrs. A... English coast!" The following day "Off the cliffs of Dover wrote first letter home to Clara -- more German with Mrs. A corrected her translations." The last two entries of his diary made in Hamburg during the conference, noting a dinner with Professor Wilhelm Ostwald, co-president with Ernst Heinrich Haeckel of the Monist League. Wakeman was a New York City lawyer and former president of the New York State Freethinkers' Association, his speech delivered at the Congress published two years later in the collection "Addresses of Thaddeus Burr Wakeman at and in Reference to the First Monist Congress at Hamburg, in September 1911" (Cos Cob, CT: 1913). The collection included Wakeman's letter to George E. MacDonald, editor of the "Truth Seeker," in which he writes "Altogether we have had a very pleasant voyage, and I have made several excellent acquaintances that will be ver … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ficke, Francis: [San Francisco]
San Francisco: Francis Ficke, 1906. Colored lithograph mounted on cardstock, 16 x 39 1/2 inches. Small hole to top center margin of mount and faint tidelines in upper margin (image not affected). A shallow scrape to the lower left corner of the image, a few other scrapes in the margins. Colors strong and vibrant. Very good. Matted. A chilling and dramatic panoramic view of the fires following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, looking east from Nob Hill towards the bay. The lower margin includes captions listing the important locations destroyed by the fire: Telegraph Hill, Hall of Justice, Kohl Building, Merchants Exchange, Mills Building, Union Trust Building, Palace Hotel, Chronicle Building, Call Building, Flood Building, St. Francis Hotel, Post Office, City Hall, and Mechanics Pavilion. Although the flames rise in the distance, the sky is still blue and the trees are green, and it is difficult to imagine that, as Ficke's subtitle states, "every building shown in the above picture was destroyed...." A closer look at the image reveals small figures on every street and sidewalk running away from the fire. One can also see a few buildings that have already started to crumble or topple from the earthquake (but are not yet on fire). The earthquake struck the coast of northern California at 5:12 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18 with an estimated magnitude of 7.9. Shaking was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles, and inland as far as central Nevada. Within three days over thirty fires broke out, mostly caused by ruptured gas lines. Some fires were started when firefighters, untr … [Click Below for Full Description]
