Hardcover. Good. 1907 Bible New York: The Christian Herald. Belonged to Rev. Giles Cooke, Last Surviving Member of Lee's Staff (Bible was not carried in war, and he became a pastor after the war was over.) Cooke wrote his thoughts about the Bible on 2 initial leaves and presented this copy of the Bible to his son in 1926. Cooke had studied under Stonewall Jackson at Virginia Military Institute, after which he became a teacher until secession in 1861 at which time he enlisted as an aide to Brigadier General Philip St. George Cocke. He fought at Manasses and Shiloh under Generals Bragg & Beauregard. In 1864 he became Lee's Assistant Adjutant and inspector General, and was wounded at Sayler's Creek. Cooke was present at Appomattox, where he was paroled. Following the war he taught school for several years until becoming a minister in 1871. He became the principal of the first African American school in Petersburg and later pastored African-Americans at the cost of a few friendships. He corresponded with Lee following the war and kept a picture of Lee on Traveler over his mantelpiece. "God has been so good to me," Cooke once said. "My last years are such happy ones.

[Golf] Drawing for July, 1907 issue of "Success" Magazine

[New York, 1907. Pen and ink on heavy paper, signed right "R. Emmett Owen" . On verso, an "Art Dept. Memo" states that the drawing was done in March, 1907 to be "engraved" for and "used in" the July, 1907 issue. A wonderful golf drawing by R. Emmett Owen for "Success" Magazine R. Emmett Owen (1878 - 1957) began his artistic career as an illustrator, having pen and ink drawings accepted by Life Magazine when he was 19. The present work may be said to come from his mature work as an illustrator. In 1910, he began to devote himself to the beautiful impressionistic landscapes for which he is primarily known. One is impressed by how effortlessly Owen composes a rather thrilling scene. Rather than have us view the handsome young golfer's drive from the gallery, Owen places us directly in front of him, ducking as it were. He and his attractive companion, both quite serious, stand on top of a slope which falls away on either side suggesting that the young, earnest couple stand on top of the world. Golf established itself in America in the late 1880s and continued to grow in popularity with both men and women, though through most of history here in America, it has been an upper class recreation. So the handsome young couple directly before us really do in many ways stand on top of the world.

Throwing Rangers to the Round-Up, Big Dry Montana

Miles City, MT 1907 - A scarce hand-colored collotype by Montana photographer Laton A. Huffman (1854-1951). The print is mounted with tabs on a backing board. There are small dampstain drops apparent in the sky area, some toning and light soil, scratches, and chips and tears up to a quarter inch. The lower edge has a white handwritten caption and copyright information with Huffman's signature, "Throwing Rangers to the Round-up, Big Dry Montana / Negative, Print Tint and LA Huffman, Miles City." Underneath this line appear the tops of other characters where the print seems to have been trimmed, with parts of the same caption cut off. Also printed is "Copyrighted 1907 by" with the area underneath trimmed. Huffman photographed Montana in the late 1800s and early 1900s and ordered 500 collotype murals of this photo with the Western Photogravure Company in 1907. "This scene is laid on the old Con Kohrs Ranch range in the Prairie Elk Country near the Missouri. The cattle had been overnight on a dry camp and were headed for water. This accounts for there being no cowboys in the picture. They were in camp enjoying a rest and eating an early dinner. The cattle could be trusted to go to the nearest water and remain there for some hours, for it was in the hot mid-summer." --L. A. Huffman, from Gene and Bev Allen's "The Collotypes of L. A. Huffman: Motana Frontier Photographer" (Helena 2014). ; 15 x 29 1/2"; Signed by Artist

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Indian's Book. An Offering by the American Indians of Indian Lore, Musical and Narrative, to Form a Record of the Songs and Legends of the Race. Illustrations from Photographs and from Original Drawings by Indians

1907 - fort , front., (4), XXX, (4), New York and London, Harper and Brothers, 1907, in-8, fort , front, (4), XXX, (4), 572, (2)pp, 22pl, toile beige imprimée d'un dessin polychrome, pièce de titre imprimée.

" Exceedingly rare imprint, with no copies in the OPAC British Union Catalog or even the Russian National Library Union Catalog, and only 1 copy in OCLC (NLI) . Chapters include: London and its Jewish quarter; Economic life of Jewish emigrants in London; The Sweating System; 3 chapters on sweatshops (including Sweatshop in other industries) ; Labor Legislation and Strikes; "Sweating System"? (What is the terrible "Sweating System") ; & Results. The routing at Gallipoli has been seen even as contributing to the victory of the Russian Revolution in 1917, making the association of this copy with Levontin all the more interesting.         Rare George Bernard Shaw inscribed book to fellow socialist Stewart Headlam, a Christian Socialist who formed the Church and Stage Guild to remove the social stigma attached to the performance arts.

London, [England], 1907. "Signed Book, John Bull's Other Island and Major Barbara: also How He Lied to Her Husband, by George Bernard Shaw, First British Edition Presentation Copy inscribed, ""To Stewart D. Headlam / from G. Bernard Shaw / 17th June 1907"", Archibald Constable & Co Ltd, London, 1907, 293 pp., 12 mo., top edge gilt, green cloth stamped with gilt titles on spine, no dust jacket, encased in a quarter leather custom slipcase with gilt titles and five raised bands on spine. Binding is tight, light soiling to covers and sunning to book spine; near fine. Custom slipcase is in fine condition with light soiling. George Bernard Shaw first met Stewart Headlam through the Land Reform Union, a Georgite [Henry George] society in favor of land nationalization. Headlam, an ordained clergyman, was banned from preaching because his sermons attacked the wide gap between rich and poor and promoted distrust of middle-class reformers. Shaw's plays, ""John Bull's Other Island"" (1904) and ""Major Barbara"" (1905) concern the issues of poverty and women's rights and imply that socialism would help solve the problems created by capitalism."

        Sartor resartus: the life and opinions of Herr Teufelsdroeckh * G A N Z P E R G A M E N T _- Handeinband

Manual of the International Order of Twelve of Knights and Daughters of Tabor, Containing General Laws, Regulations, Ceremonies, Drill, and Landmarks

[No place - St. Louis?]: The Moses Dickson Publishing Company. 1907. First. Fifth edition, revised. Octavo. 376pp., illustrated from photographs. Green cloth gilt. 366pp. Pages toned as usual, modest rubbing on the boards, a very good or better copy of a volume usually found well-worn. A very uncommon work, the rules and format of an important black fraternal organization. Originally known as the Knights of Liberty, reportedly organized by twelve black men meeting privately in St. Louis, Missouri in August, 1846. They were also known as the Knights of Tabor or the International Order of Twelve. The Knights claimed a peak membership of nearly 50,000, and they estimated that over 10 years they helped some 70,000 slaves escape from slavery through the clandestine Underground Railroad. Following the Civil War, the leaders founded a benevolent fraternal society called the International Order of the Twelve Knights and Daughters of Tabor. Moses Dickson was the founder of the Knights. Born free in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1824, he saw firsthand the horrors of the slave system when he worked on a steamboat that traveled South. He was a soldier in the Civil War, and later became an A.M.E. minister, a founder of Lincoln University in Missouri, and president of the Refugee Relief Board in St. Louis, which aided African-Americans on their way seeking greater freedom in Kansas and the West. Very scarce. OCLC locates no copies of this 1907 edition. .

Eichenlaub-Prachtausgabe. Paris: Imprimée pour les Souscripteurs [printed at Alençon by Vve Félix Guy et Cie],, 1907. Drame en un Acte. Quarto (260 x 196 mm). Contemporary vellum, spine simply gilt lettered "Salomé", single-line gilt border on sides, covers gilt lettered "O.W." (Oscar Wilde), with the original drab green paper wrappers bound in. Letterpress title printed in red & black, illustrated title page, frontispiece, decorative border to List of Plates, 11 plates, and cul-de-lampe by Aubrey Beardsley, plate of Beardsley's original cover design for the 1894 edition. Gilt on spine faded, covers a little "dished", some offsetting from plates to letterpress, without the slip mentioned by Mason (stating that the edition was published with the authorization of Robert Ross and the publisher Methuen). A very attractive copy. Pirated and limited edition, number 11 of 100 copies printed on Vergé d'Arches paper, and issued by Charles Carrington (this copy has his ticket), who has been described as "one of the most notorious pornographers of the late nineteenth century"; and the first French edition with Beardsley's illustrations. The story of Salome's publication is a long and convoluted one ranging across the Channel and two languages: it was first issued in French in 1893, the first edition with Beardsley's illustrations appeared in 1894 but some designs were withheld and not published until the Bodley Head edition of 1907. This copy has an intriguing but elusive provenance: gilt initials "G.F." at foot of spine and discreet engraved book plate printed in red (at head of half-title) carrying the monogram "G.F." above the motto "Amicus inter Amicos" ("Among Friends"). This provenance also occurs in a book held by the Houghton Library at Harvard, a copy of a work by Anatole France (Histoire de dona Maria d'Avalos, Paris 1902), which is a chapter extracted from Le Puits de sainte Claire and published by the Librairie des Bibliophiles, a nom de publication used by Carrington.
