Michelson in New Rochelle and a 1900 postcard to Miss Elsa Michelson sent from Germany and signed "Albert" (her brother rather than he

Various locations, Various dates. Very Good. Albert Michelson was the first American scientist to win a Nobel Prize when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1907. The photograph, which shows a vigorous-looking man in early middle age, was probably taken before Michelson won the Nobel Prize (when he was 55). He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1873 and spent two years at sea (which is probably when the first item was sent). He married Margaret Heminway of New Rochelle in 1877 and promptly secured the financial support he needed to carry out his scientific experiments from Margaret's wealthy father. Albert and Margaret had three children (Albert, Truman and Elsa). The 1896 letter to Margaret is a brief, impersonal note sent from Chicago to New Rochelle in which he says he is sending her $250 and that he has told her she can get two gowns. He divorced Margaret in 1898 and remarried the following year. Albert Michelson apparently had little or no contact with Margaret or any of their three children after the divorce. Oddly, his official Nobel biography does not even mention his first wife or the three children from that marriage although it does mention his second wife and the children from that marriage.

        My African Journey

London: Hodder and Stoughton. FIRST EDITION. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PICTORIAL CLOTH of Churchill stirring account of his African travels. Complete with 61 photographic illustrations and three maps. "In autumn 1907 [Churchill] set out on a tour of east Africa which began as a hunting expedition but turned into a semi-official inquiry into colonial affairs. In Kenya he went big-game hunting and investigated the conditions of African contract workers. In Uganda he visited Christian missions, took tea with Daudi Chewa, the eleven-year-old kabaka of Buganda, and took up with great enthusiasm the project for a dam across the Ripon Falls" (Dictionary of National Biography). "Living more by his pen than his ministerial salary, Churchill contracted to write a series of articles for the Strand Magazine. These were expanded into a book, My African Journey, published in 1908… My African Journey gives a vivid and sometimes exciting picture of Africa and the author's progress. It is also instructive, as befits Churchill's instincts as an itinerant politician" (Sandys, Chasing Churchill: The Travels of Winston Churchill). London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908. Octavo, original pictorial red cloth. Publisher's catalog bound in rear (as issued). Mild fading to spine (less than usual), slight lean to binding, a little foxing to text block edges (text exceptionally clean). A handsome copy with front cover colors particularly strong.

        Nearest the Pole.

New York: Doubleday & Company,, April 1907. A Narrative of the Polar Expedition of the Peary Arctic Club in the S. S. Roosevelt, 1905-1906. Large octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt to spine, emblaem to front in red white and gilt, top edge gilt. Coloured frontispiece and 32 black and white photographic plates, folding coloured map at the rear. Rubbing to ends and corners but a smart copy, rear hinge cracked, otherwise internally fresh, a very good copy indeed. First edition, inscribed by Peary on the title page "yours sincerely, R. E. Peary, U.S.N." Also includes, tipped in to front free endpaper, a typed letter signed (dated 14 May 1907) by Peary, and another signed clipping from a typed letter, both addressed to the owner of this book, W. D. Vincent (his illustrated bookplate to front pastedown). William D. Vincent (1866-1935) was a book collector and amateur historian interested in Pacific Northwest History. Professionally he was a banker in Spokane, Washington. Vincent's papers are held at Washington State University. He has also tipped in facing the half title a typed letter signed from James Cool dated 25 February 1898, observing that "you are personally acquainted with Lieut. Peary, U.S.N. who is to deliver a lecture under the auspices of the Young Men's Fraternity of the M.E. Church of this city [Spokane, Washington], in the First M. E. Church, Monday night March 7th [1898]", and asking "you to introduce Lieut. Peary to the audience on that evening." Vincent has also tipped in his typed notes, with manuscript corrections, for that speech: "Within the past year, you all know that Norway has gained the honor long held by our country, that of having reached fartherest North. There is with us tonight an American who has experienced all the terrors of the Artic, one whose plan and perseverance will meet with success, one who will carry the stars and stripes farther North than the flag of Norway has been carried." The Norwegians in question who in 1895 had reached the "fartherest North" were of course Fridtjof Nansen and Fredrik Hjalmar Johansen. "In his continuing assault on the North Pole, Peary had to keep raising funds by any means, including lobbying, lecturing, and publishing books such as this as [his] justification of further attempts. Combined with the financial support of the Peary Antarctic Club and the personal enthusiasm of President Theodore Roosevelt, the 1905-06 expedition was notable for a number of factors, although unsuccessful in its ultimate goal." (Books on Ice 5.10). Peary was eventually to reach the Pole (though his claim is now disputed, it was accepted at the time) in 1909. A highly compelling copy, with documentary material emblematic of Peary's continued endeavours.

Photo Album - NW Frontier - Khybar Pass, British India with Negatives

Pakistan, 1907. Peshawar, Khyber Pass, North West Frontier Province [Pakistan], 1907-1916. Album of snapshot photographs taken by an officer of the Indian Army, conceivably Major George Weston, surgeon for the Royal Army Medical Corps, who, at Dagshai, constructed the famous and fabled grave memorial to his wife Mary Rebecca Weston. Contains 163 vintage gelatin silver print photographs printed in postcard format, measuring approximately 12,5 x 7,5 cm, neatly ensconced behind window mounts, recto and verso onto 35 thick leaves. Qto. album, illustrated green cloth boards, measuring approximately 35 x 20 x 5 cm. Album is wrapped in brown paper with mailing label addressed to Miss M. Dunford, 41 Victoria Road, in Frome, England. Together with 101 original film negatives, some of which are captioned and dated 1910, contained in a separate purpose-made 'Eastman Negative Album' with tissue sleeves for each one. Negatives album measures approximately 7,5 x 10,5 x 3 cm. Sage cloth titled boards with folding envelope style spine and snap closure. Most negatives measure approximately 14 x 9 cm, a scant few varying slightly in size. Several photographs faded, although the original negatives facilitate reprinting, the lot otherwise in Very Good Condition. Uncommon pre-independence views of the northern reaches of present-day Pakistan, these original photographs and film negatives demonstrate the resolute efforts to maintain supremacy over the trade route region, and thus a great advantage for the British Empire. These snapshot photographs illustrate settlements and works of British Army posted in the North West Frontier Province, now part of Pakistan, from the time of the 1908 punitive campaigns against the Zakka Khelthe Afridis in the Bazar Valley, and against the Mohmands in the Khyber Pass, and through the Great War. The North-West Frontier (present-day Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) region of the British Indian Empire was the most difficult area to conquer in South Asia. With the expansion of the Russian Empire into Central Asia in the twentieth century, stability of the Frontier and control of Afghanistan became cornerstones of defensive strategy for British India. The Khyber Pass, one of the two principle gateways on the North West Frontier has been an important trade route between Central Asia and South Asia since ancient times. Since annexation by the East India Company, the Khyber Pass has served as an important strategic military region. Control of the region in fact depended to a large extent on the Punjab Frontier Force which was recruited from local tribesmen and commanded by British officers. After the First World War, the British would construct a heavily engineered railway through the Pass. The Khyber Pass Railway from Jamrud, near Peshawar, to the Afghan border near Landi Kotal, was opened in 1925. Very rare is the early visual testimony to trade control in the wild frontier regions, with a spectacular view of a rudimentary open-air Customs House, essentially a shelter with two desks, situated in the Domel Valley, now part of the Chitral District of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. In order to assert control and render the seditious indigenous tribal groups tractable, large military camps were erected throughout the mountainous regions, including the Khyber Pass Military Encampment at Ali Masjid, which is seen here. Other encampments are shown, possibly at Fort Peshawar. "Landi Kotal Fort" captions one of the negatives which is also included as a printed photograph. Situated only 5 kilometers east of the Afghanistan border, the small fort guards the western end of the Khyber Pass. Landi Kotal was a vulnerable frontier outpost in the 19th and 20th centuries. [Contemporary to this album, the 1909 edition of "The Imperial Gazetteer of India" identified the settlement as "the westernmost point on the Khyber Pass occupied by the British Government". During the Second Anglo-Afghan War Landi Kotal had served as an encampment of the 12,000-strong Peshawar Valley Field Force under General Sir Samuel Browne who was crossing the Khyber Pass on the way towards Kabul at the start of the war.] At Jamrud Fort trenches are being constructed, a power line erected, and other works are being accomplished. "N.W.R. Last Patrol House" captions another view, which was evidently taken whilst leaning out of a moving railcar. [In 1901 the broad gauge North West Railway was extended from Peshawar to Jamrud.] Rail travel was imperative and being rapidly developped in the region. An excellent view captures a locomotive going through the Khojak Tunnel, a 3.91 km railway tunnel constructed in 1891 near the Afghanistan border at Chaman in Qilla Abdullah District of Balochistan Province, Pakistan. [Each mile cost approximately 50,000 rupees to construct.] Most unexpected perhaps, is a snapshot view of a military procession, marching in unison and drums playing, in desolate dusty grounds for an unidentified occasion. Further photographs capture a grand event which was held during the officer's stay in the North West Frontier Province, perhaps a sports day with formal inspection. Whole regiments and small groups of men are seen hard at work, conveying trucks, supplies, and the necessary accoutrements for erecting more tent cities. In one case a cliff-side road edge has crumbled under the tires. Two captions identify "No. 2 MT [Mechanical Transport] Company" and a regiment as "No. 3 Section." A close-up look at one of the photographs reveals "54 M [Mountain] Corps" consuming a valley floor with its tents surrounding a walled fort. Rugged Thornycroft trucksare seen in convoys and working solo, mostly J-Types and tipping wagons. In contrast, nomads and tribesmen travelled through the pass by camel. [Thornycroft was a United Kingdom-based vehicle manufacturer established in 1896. In 1899 the War Office purchased its first Thornycroft steam lorry for experimental use by the Royal Engineers. The J-Type truck was the company?s first vehicle supplied to the military in significant numbers. Designed to meet a 1911 British War Office specification fora 3-ton "subsidy scheme" cargo truck, Thornycroft supplied the War Office with 24 H-, J- and K-Type chassis between August 1912 and May 1913. In January 1913 Thornycroft was awarded a certificate of acceptance for the performance of its Type K our-cylinder 30hp lorry subsidy lorry, having passed testing by the Mechanical Transport Committee. Evidence within suggests that this album was compiled by Major George Oswald Weston, RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps), a physician who in 1907 was posted to a garrison Military Hospital in British India, and the husband of Mary Rebecca Weston who died along with their unborn infant during childbirth in December 1909. The grave monument built for Mary is the center image of the first page. The album also contains a snapshot photograph of the officer in front of a medical army vehicle with its red cross ensign, while some photographic negatives are images of the officer's elegant and modest wife. [Major George Oswald Weston and Mary Rebecca (née Delanty, born 1873) married in Rawalpindi on 20 April 1892. A First-class Assistant-Surgeon in the Indian Army, Indian Subordinate Medical Department, on 17 April 1909 he was assigned the rank of Senior Assistant Surgeon with the honorary rank of Lieutenant. After many years being childless, around that time the couple decided to take in a girl named Grace Maude Clare, the daughter of a widowed mother of seven. Shortly thereafter Mary did in fact become pregnant, but most tragically, she and the infant died during childbirth, at Dagshai, one of the oldest cantonment towns in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, India. The grief stricken Major had an exquisite altar dedicated to her memory at St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Dagshai, and erected a magnificent headstone over her grave. Concluding that he could not raise a girl on his own, little Grace was returned to her mother in exchange for her brother Philip. Major Weston stayed in British India for some time, being made Senior Assistant Surgeon with the honorary rank of Captain, on 1 February, 1914. Interestingly, the views in this album span the time-frame which Major Weston is known to have been in the NW Frontier region, 1907-1914. Further research is required to learn more about his career or later life.] [The gravesite of Mary Rebecca Weston and her unborn child has a legacy of its own. A beautiful marble structure of an angel overlooking the woman and her baby, was designed and made in England and placed in the cemetery of Dagshai, over her tomb. It was cared for meticulously during the era of British rule, however, a century later, the grave is now in ruins, having been substantially chipped away by superstitious locals who believed that possessing a piece of the statue would increase the chances of conception, and furthermore bring the blessing of a baby boy.] The negatives contain images of the officer's wife, which may be the last photographic images of the idolized Mary Rebecca Weston. Several views reveal that the officer did some travelling throughout the colonial British province, possibly on medical duty. Scenes in Murree, which was a Hill station in Punjab, present-day Pakistan, and near the border of Jammu and Kashmir, include Pindi Point and the English church. A mountain view is captioned "Snow hills in Kashmir" indicating that the order was crossed. The old brick treasury building in Rawalpindi also makes a lovely nostalgic scene. Other highlights of the bygone British-rule era include: General Nicholson's Obelisk or Nicholson's Memorial, a granite obelisk monument approximately 40 feet in height erected in 1868, and situated at the Tarnol pass in the Margalla Hills, overlooking the Grand Trunk Road which connects Islamabad with Peshawar. [Brigadier-General John Nicholson CB (1822-1857) was a Victorian era military officer known for his role in British India. A charismatic and authoritarian figure, Nicholson created a legend for himself as a political officer under Henry Lawrence in the frontier provinces of the British Empire in India. He was instrumental in the settlement of the North-West Frontier and played a noted part in the Indian Mutiny.] The statue of Queen Victoria erected at Rawalpindi in 1909. The statue, sculpted in England, was plcaed on a pedestal at the junction of The Mall and the Murree Road. The Mountain Artillery marched past it during its formal unveiling. It is now in the grounds of the British High Commision. Islamia College in Peshawar, founded in October 1913 by Nawab Sir Sahibzada Abdul Qayyum Khan. North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) was a province of British India, formally established in 1901 by the British administration, out of the North-Westerly areas of the originally Pashtun lands which were merged with old Punjab, initially under a Chief Commissioner, and then a full-fledged Governor beginning circa 1938. Referendum was held to decide the future of NWFP after it was made part of Pakistan. The province was dissolved in 1955, after eight years of being part of the independent state of Pakistan. . Very Good.

        The Steerage.

printed 1915 1907 - Photogravure on Japanese tissue paper (12-5/8 x 10-1/4 inches), mounted, framed and glazed. Stieglitz's most iconic photograph. In June 1907, Stieglitz and his family sailed to Europe to visit relatives and friends. They booked passage on the SS Kaiser Wilhelm II, one of the largest and fastest ships in the world at that time. According to Stieglitz, sometime after their third day of travel, he went for a walk around the ship and came upon a viewpoint that looked down toward the lower class passengers area, known on most ships as the steerage. The Steerage began its life as a masterpiece four years after its creation, with Stieglitz's publication of it in a 1911 issue of Camera Work devoted exclusively to his photographs in the "new" style, together with a Cubist drawing by Picasso. Stieglitz loved to recount how the great painter had praised the collage-like dispersal of forms and shifting depths of The Steerage. Canonised retroactively, the photograph allowed Stieglitz to put his chosen medium on par with the experimental European painting and sculpture he imported and exhibited at his gallery. Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) was a major force in the promotion and elevation of photography as a fine art in America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Steerage is considered Stieglitz's signature work, and was proclaimed by the artist and illustrated in histories of the medium as his first "modernist" photograph. It marks Stieglitz's transition away from painterly prints of Symbolist subjects to a more straightforward depiction of quotidian life.

Buenos Aires 1907 - MITRE. Museo Mitre. Fundado el año 1907. Album containing 12 original mounted photographs (164 x 214mm) showing the exterior and interior of the newly established Museo Mitre. [Buenos Aires, 1907]. Oblong 4to. (325 x 470mm) Original morocco binding with title and ornament gilt-stamped on front cover; spine repaired, corners scuffed; inside in fine, clean condition. The first illustrated guide to the Museum Mitre in Calle San Martín 366, Buenos Aires, inaugurated 3rd June 1907. The charming 18th century colonial house, formerly the private residence of President Bartolomé Mitre from 1860 to 1906, was acquired by the nation after his death with the object of converting it into a national museum; its contents, including his large library, collections and archives, were donated by the family to conserve the superb 19th century interior in its original state. The photographs represent: a front view of the building, the large drawing room, the reception hall with statue of Mitre, a room with the military collection, a portrait gallery with showcases, the ‘sala del jubileo’, Mitre’s private office, Mitre’s bedroom, the archive and office of the museum director, the vast library of the Americas, the reading room, and a model of a projected mausoleum. The mounts bear the embossed signature of Alejandro Witcomb, the most successful Argentine photographer of the period (the studio was founded by his father Alexander Whitcomb (1835-1905). Bartolomé Mitre (1821-1906), soldier, journalist, and first legitimate Argentine president (1862-68), founded the leading broadsheet “La Nación”. He is today considered one of the greatest Argentine historical figures. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Limited Edition Illustrated By Arthur Rackham)

William Heinemann / Doubleday, Page & Co, 1907-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Limited, 1st ed. No. 463 of 1130 illustrated by Arthur Rackham. xi, [1], 161, [1] pages, [13] leaves of plates : illustrations (some color) ; 21 cm. Bound in publisher's cream cloth. Spine moderately browned. Hardcover in slip case. Good binding and cover. Scattered foxing. 13 tipped-in color plates, 15 black-and-white line drawings. Latimore & Haskell, p. 28. Avery 18. Riall, p. 77. "A number of elements made Rackham's visual interpretation a turning point in the history of both the Carroll classic and the art of illustration. First and foremost was his distinctive aesthetic at the intersection of the sentimental and the grotesque â?? sensitive and dark at the same time.... Another point of significance in Rackham's edition was the often neglected but powerful way in which the evolution of technology and the evolution of art fuel one another. Previously, illustrators handed their work over to engravers, who translated the drawings into rough lines cut onto wood or metal plates, which were then inked and pressed onto the page in the printing process. But Rackham, aware that his delicate and expressive lines would be lost in translation, began photographing his drawings and having them mechanically reproduced. This removed the engravers as middlemen, but also increased production cost since illustrated pages now had to be printed on glazed paper and inserted into the regularly printed book. This shift introduced a third major element of innovation at the intersection of culture and commerce, changing the economics of illustration and pioneering a new way for artists to make a living. To subsidize the higher cost of preserving the integrity of his artwork in print, Rackham partnered with the publisher William Heinnemann and they came up with a profitable model â?? each book was issued in a small limited-edition run of signed, beautifully bound, expensive copies, and a large run of affordable mass-market copies." - Maria Popova, Brain Pickings, 2016. <br><br> (I would normally be slightly abashed about taking so much verbatum from a web source, but Popova's prose is exceptional and cuts to the heart of why Rackham's book and this specific printing is significant. I urge anyone to go to google Brain Pickings and see more of Popova's work. She has a beautiful mind and her work is a pleasure to read. Support her online, if you can. - CRS)

STORIES FROM THE ARABIAN NIGHTS, Retold by Laurence Housman

London: Hodder and Stoughton, N.D. ca. 1907. First Edition of the Large Paper Issue with the plates interspersed throughout the text. With the full complement of all 50 tipped-in color plates by Edmund Dulac. Large 4to, in the publisher’s original rust-colored cloth lettered and pictorially decorated in beautiful Arabian style in gilt and dark blue on the spine and upper cover. With the original dustjacket upper cover tipped inside. xvi, 133 pp. A beautiful copy, unusually well preserved and fine, the plates pristine and perfect, the text fresh, the cloth bright, a bit of breakage at the join of the free-fly and pastedown. BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED BY EDMUND DULAC. Here we find a collection of stories from the ARABIAN NIGHTS superbly illustrated by Edmund Dulac. Selected from the original Persian fairy tales are: Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Sinbad the Sailor, Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, and many others colorfully rendered on tipped-in plates. Dulac's illustrations conjure the mysterious atmosphere of the oriental text and transport the reader to a lyrical world of grace and beauty. Dulac’s affinity for oriental design becomes apparent in the exquisite, almost jewel-like images; there is the profound influence of oriental art and especially Persian miniatures in this group of exotic paintings. Intricate colors and patterns are juxtaposed to create lyrical scenes as in, Supposing Me Asleep and Aladdin in the Cave. Stark simplicity is felt in the interstices between graceful lines and brilliant colors as in The Lady Bedr-el-Budur and Princess Badoura. The artist achieved intense effects in shading and atmosphere in his nocturne scenes such as The Lady Advanced to Meet Him. As we turn the pages, we feel drawn into a mysterious world of exotic moods and mysterious encounters. “The Arabian Nights gave Dulac an opportunity to indulge in his nocturnes; the the softness of the gleam of moonlight on stone, or on shadowy figures, and his use of ultramarine, indigo and Prussian blue, mingled with purples and violets, brought to the illustrations the calm and mystery of Eastern nights.”-Colin White STORIES FROM THE ARABIAN NIGHTS is especially important in understanding Dulac’s creative growth as it is believed that here, for the first time, he imposed an inner order and self-discipline. The success of the work was astonishing for its time and overshadowed other publication events for some time thereafter. “Leicester Galleries displayed the Dulac watercolors for THE ARABIAN NIGHTS in the autumn of 1907, at the same time the book was (originally) released. With unanimous praise the book was received by the critics and every picture sold even before the exhibition was opened to the general public. In light of this overwhelming success, Leicester Galleries promptly signed a contract with Dulac for one book a year, the subject to be chosen jointly between them and in consultation with Hodder & Stoughton.”-Susan Meyer. Dulac treated each picture with a seriousness that brought him great praise, showing that he, like any fine easel painter could accomplish great art, even for use in the book arts. The book sealed his reputation and set him permanently on the long course of success he would enjoy throughout his career. This lovely edition of STORIES FROM THE ARABIAN NIGHTS, liltingly illustrated by Dulac, will be a cherished addition to any library.

Official programme for "Concerts Historiques Russes".

      G. de Malherbe for Moreau frères Paris 1907 - Octavo (28 x 22 cm). 96 pages, including 30 full-page illustrations, original printed wrappers;; very slightly sunned A fine example of this thick, richly illustrated programme for Diaghilev's second "export campaign" of Russian art and culture to Paris. The year before he brought to Parisians, who at that time were unaware of even most famous names of Russian early or modern painters, a collection of most characteristic examples of Russian art. This time he presented to them five symphony concerts at the Paris Opéra, in which celebrated artists and virtuosi took part. This "Russian season" marked the rising star of Diaghilev and his productions that enjoyed astonishing success in Paris and world-wide for many following years. The programme included such famous pieces as Russlan and Ludmila and The Komarinskaya by Glinka, Christmas Eve by Rimsky-Korsakov, Symphony No. 2 in C minor by Tchaikovsky, The Prince Igor by Borodin. The lead singers were Marianne Tcherkassky and Feodor Chaliapin, who made a debut in Paris. Apollinary Vasnetsov and the great Mir Isskustva artist Konstantin Korovin were invited to design decorations. Moving away from the traditional stage design, which only indicated a place of action, Korovin produced sensual decorations conveying the general emotions of the performance - which was seen as a revolution.         [Untitled Photograph Album Documenting Production Facilities of Henkell Trocken]

Photographer(s) and compiler uncredited. Large album format (30 x 23.5 cm.), 23 leaves (19 with black-&-white photographs). Captions in English.Collection of photographs dating, variously, from the middle years of the last century, assembled evidently for an English-speaking audience, and providing an overview of the cellar, maturation monitoring, and bottling operations of the German sparkling wine specialist Henkell & Co. Famously known as the Schloß (palace), the complex on view was built in the Wiesbaden suburb of Biebrich between 1907 and 1909 by the architect Paul Bonatz (1877-1956) to the specifications of Otto Henkell (1869-1929). Henkel & Co. more than weathered World War II. It does not appear that the family sought ties with the National Socialists, but they didn't have to. Otto's daughter Anna Elisabeth (Annalies) (1896-1973) married the (future) NS foreign minister Joachim von Ribbentrop, who became a principal investor in the firm. It is worth remembering that Germans have always appreciated sparkling wine, and a great deal of it was drunk in the domestic market during war time, especially after the regime abolished the tax on Deutscher Sekt and Schaumwein. In 1952, Annalies petitioned for her son Rudolf to regain partial control of the company, and the West German courts ruled in their favor. Henkell & Co. continued to produce Henkell Trocken under its own name until the sale of the winery in 1986. Little is ascertainable regarding the origins of the album. Otto Henkel--the elder Otto's nephew, son of his brother Karl--is present in the portrait collection of company managers on the final leaf of photographs, but his presence spans many years. The vintage labels have not yet been applied to bottles shown in a production line on photograph fifteen. Possibly automobiles of ca. 1950--including a white roadster--are depicted in an aerial photograph of the Schloß, though sufficient details are undiscernable. And a Bizerbo scale shown in the seventeenth photograph was no longer maufactured by 1951, though of course it may have been in use well before being captured by the photographer. Unique; well-mounted and artful arrangement of professional images celebrating a revered German wine house, very likely as it looked before, during, and immediately after the Second World War. Buff paper age-toned. Brown paper wrappers, lightly worn, sewn with a brown cord; head and foot of spine lightly chipped. [Helmut Arntz. Für ihre Probe deutscher Sekt.
