        The Ingoldsby Legends.

London: J. M. Dent and Company, , 1907. Or Mirth and Marvels. Large octavo (252 x 200 mm). Contemporary art nouveau-style "vellucent" binding by Cedric Chivers of Bath in green morocco, spine and front cover lettered and tooled in gilt, hand-painted vellum vignette of Franciscan monk and crow to front cover, turn-ins ruled in gilt, green marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Colour frontispiece and 23 colour plates tipped-in on dark green paper, 12 tinted plates on plain paper, illustrations in the text. Spine and edges of covers faded to brown, rubbing to joints, 50 mm tear to pp. 477/8, some pages unopened. An excellent copy. First revised edition, first impression, of Rackham's illustrated edition of The Ingoldsby Legends, containing drawings not found in earlier editions. This copy is a beautiful example of Chivers's vellucent technique, which he developed in the early 1900s. In contrast to the earlier method used by Edwards of Halifax, the painting was not done on the underside of the transparent vellum, but on paper which was attached to the binding and covered with vellum. The surface of the vellum was then tooled in gold, thus enhancing the impressive effect. Rackham's illustrated edition of The Ingoldsby Legends was originally published in 1898 but Rackham chose to expand the work and redraw the illustrations so that "greater prominence could be given to the illustrations by better and larger reproductions, including a greater number of illustrations in colour" (Rackham's Prefatory Note).

Offprint from Elektrotechnischen Zeitschrift 33 (1907). 4pp. Text illustrations. 270 x 192 mm. Original printed wrappers. Lightly creased but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed on the front wrapper: "Überricht vom Verfasser." From the library of physicist Henri Becquerel (1852-1908), with his characteristic gummed docketing label on the front wrapper. First Edition, Offprint Issue. Korn invented telephotography, the first practical method of scanning and transmitting images over electrical wires. His system used a light-sensitive selenium photocell to convert the different tones of an image into a varying electrical current; at the receiving end the transmitted image was reconstituted and recorded on photographic film. Korn invented his device in 1902, but his first machines were impractical as they took as long as 12 hours to transmit images. By 1907, the year he published the present paper, Korn had improved his machines to the point where they could transmit a 13 x 18 cm. photograph in 12 minutes; some of these images and their transmission times are included in this paper. In April 1907 Korn's equipment was put into regular service for transmission of newspaper photographs between Munich and Berlin via telegraph circuits.

[Photo Album]: British in India 1904-1907

India, 1907. Very Good. Oblong folio measuring 10.5" x 15". Cream colored stiff boards. Contains 65 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 2" and 9.5" x 11" with captions. Heavily foxed with tears and chipped corners thus good only with very good photographs with some fading, tears, and abrasions.A photo album kept by a group of British expatriates in India in 1904. Beginning with a Christmas picnic in Muzaffarpur in 1904 the group is pictured wearing pith helmets and lounging on fallen tree branches and enjoying a Christmas feast spread out on a blanket. The picnic was held under the famous Lychee trees of the city. Various candids and snapshots are scattered throughout the album featuring family pets, children playing, and people posing in gardens. One section of photos from 1905 shows the Sonepore Race Meet featuring photos of the Commissioner's Camp, polo ground, and the animals themselves. Beginning in the 1800s the British Raj used Sonepur as the location of an annual race in November. This time had traditionally been used as an animal trade fair by the Hindu locals and some of those customs continued through the transition from fair to race. Landowners in the area set up large carpeted tents for lounging as well as accompanying sleeping and bathing tents for the elite visitors who came to see the anticipated event. For the British population it was a huge social event which not only involved horse races and polo matches but dinners and dancing. The ballroom that was set up for the 1905 event can be seen beyond the polo ground including well-dressed British women meeting with riders and their horses, and images of the encampment. The group went into what is now present day Pakistan on a few occasions. Some photos show a tented encampment at the Khyber Pass and the rice mills of the area. One image of a British man on a horse in captioned, "surveying Khyber," and is accompanied by a photo of a group of turbaned Indian men. Two large photos show the chaos of Bannu City on market day with enormous crowds of people. In Bannu they took photos of the fort, a British church, and the people of the city. A photo from Darjeeling in 1906 shows a wedding party posing for a large group photograph. An interesting look at the British upper class in India during the early 1900s.

Austria 1907 - Austria: n.p., n.d. (ca 1907). [12] pp. Approximately 7 1/4 x 9". Paper over boards, illustrated with an inlaid chromolithograph, age-toning to boards, chipping and rubbing of the paper along spine and edges, a fairly-complete set of tobacco cards (25 of 30 in the series lacking only nos. 5, 10, 12, 23, 26), illustrated drawings of birds and real feathers from the respective ones, condition varies from good to near fine with occasional glue smear and ruffled feathers, also includes several miscellaneous stamps including 3 from the PPIE in San Francisco in 1915, very good + condition. Each drawing of a bird was decorated with real feathers from the said bird, in its shape. The cards were initially introduced in glassine envelopes (not included here). Some of the featured birds included the American Eagle, Ptarmigan, Scarlet Tanager, and Peacock [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Versand D: 12,00 EUR

        Sister Carrie

New York: B. W. Dodge & Company, 1907 Second edition, first issue. Signed and inscribed by Dreiser to the front free endpaper. Dark red cloth stamped in gilt. Boards lightly soiled and variously worn, with tips bumped and spine cocked; with photograph of Dreiser mounted onto front pastedown and previous owner's bookplate and ownership inscription to front free endpaper, as well as a brief typed biography of Dreiser tipped in to the rear free endpaper, and ownership inscription to p.557. Overall a very good copy. Sister Carrie tells the story Caroline Meeber, a young woman from Wisconsin who dreams of living a glamorous life in the city. After she moves to Chicago, Carrie becomes the mistress of two wealthy businessmen, through whom she is able to transform herself into a stylish urban woman. After moving to New York City, Carrie is able to fulfil her dreams of becoming a famous actress, but only to realize that material wealth does not elicit true happiness. Although today considered one of Dreier's best novels, Sister Carrie was initially met with mixed critical reviews and was not commercially successful. While the protagonist's lack of Victorian moral values all but ensured that there would be some negative criticism, much of Sister Carrie's initial lack of success was due to the publisher's distaste for the novel; after Dreiser made publication arrangements with Walter Page, his partner Frank Doubleday attempted to cancel the publication, but, being legally prevented from doing so, appeased himself by refusing to market the text properly. . Inscribed by Author. second Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Hand Painted Table Screen painted on each side with landscapes, naval figures and ships, the Bay of Naples and Antarctic scenes.

Ebonised lancet-panelled folding table screen; the three papered panels (each approx 340 mm x210 mm, extended length 640mm) hand-painted both sides in ink with blue wash heightened in white. A charming early 20th century table screen celebrating heroic naval scenes with fine detailed illustrations. The Antarctic scene is an homage to Shackleton and the Nimrod Expedition of 1907-1909. Three of the other panels are illustrated with famous Royal Navy vessels including HMS Gibraltar launched in 1860, HMS Victory with two sailors holding ropes with mourning pennants aflutter in honour of Nelson, and vignettes of HMS Goshawk, Psyche and two sailing craft. Another panel depicts HMS Iron Duke the last of four Audacious-class ironclads built for the Royal Navy in the late 1860s. The rigging of the sailing ships has been carefully and accurately painted suggesting the artist had both familiarity and interest in the Royal Navy of the late 19th century. The two other panels are decorated with vignettes of the British Isles including Lake Windermere, Killarney and Derriquin Castle and a lighthouse in a landscape of tropical coconut palms and ferns. Provenance: Private collection New Zealand.
