Paris. 1905, 1907, 1909, 1910., Sociéte Nouvelle de Librairie et d?édition Paris / Ancienne Librairie Tresse & Stock - X, 302; X, 356; XIX, 328; XX, 336 S. Gr.8°, Original-Halblederbd. Frz. Insgesamt ordentlicher Zustand. 2000 gr. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

L'invasion de la mer. Le phare du bout du monde

Collection hetzel 1905 - - Collection hetzel, Paris 1905, Grd. in-8 (18x27,5cm), 236pp. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Collective first edition illustrated (and only edition of this title) by George Roux 12 chromotypographies, inset black and many photographs of Algeria (some in color). Carton to an elephant with title in the red vermilion fan. Back to the lighthouse. second board with palmettes frame and central macaroon. Beautiful top plate, but small areas scraped around "Extraordinary Journeys". Second flat good, but with some scraped areas at the left corner. Beautiful back, with clean gold, with a headdress a little sagging, the tail perfect. Along the outer edge, 1.5cm area rubbed. Sharp corners. Copy very fresh, without freckles. Very nice copy. The invasion of the sea , is the last novel which Jules Verne was able to correct the tests, and happens in Tunisia and in Algeria: project of a channel which would flood a part of the Sahara. As for the Lighthouse at the end of the world , Jules Verne did not correct the proofs and it was his son Michel who made a number of changes to the original text. The action takes place in South America, east of Tierra del Fuego, where the Pacific meets the Atlantic. Wreckers lurking there, reminiscent of Stevenson's novel of the same name. These two novels first appeared for the first time in 1905. 236pp. ; 204pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Muller-Pouillets Lehrbuch der Physik und Meteorologie; Lehrbuch der Kosmischen Physik; Atlas zum Lehrbuch der Kosmischen Physik.

Braunschweig:: F. Vieweg, 1905-7, 1909., 1905. 4 parts in 5 volumes. 8vo. xiv, 544; [4], [xv]-xvii, [1], [545]-801, [1]; xxvii, [1], 1189, [1]; xiv, 923, [1]; xii, 622, [1] pp. 22 plates (some folding, some in color), 838, 915, 499, 531 figs. Modern half brown morocco, paste-paper boards, blind- and gilt-stamped spine labels, raised bands. Fine. FIRST EDITION in German, complete. This is the most advanced textbook on Cosmic Physics and Meteorology of its time. "His acclaimed textbook on physics and meteorology, Elements de physique experimentale et de meteorologie, was published in four parts.[6] Also, it was translated into German by Johann Heinrich Jakob Muller, and published with the title, Lehrbuch der Physik und Meteorologie." - Wikip. "Pouillet's lectures -- which were partially collected in his Elements de physique experimentale et de meteorologie (1927) and in the Lecons de physique de la Faculte des sciences (1828) -- were widely read. (Pouillet published a popular account of Elements in 1850.) Although offering no spectacular novelties, they presented, in clear language, a survey of the state of the various branches of physics and of recent developments in them." - DSB XI, p. 111. / A much revised and expanded version of what was originally Pouillet's Elements de Physique Experimentale et de Meteorologie (1827), which Muller translated into Lehrbuch der Physik und Meteorologie (1842) and then expanded with the supplement Lehrbuch der Kosmischen Physik (1856). It was eventually taken to a ninth edition by Pfaundler (1886-98) and finally revised and expanded yet again by Pfaundler into this final edition including an additional volume, Magnetismus und Elektrizitat (1909), written by Walter Kaufmann (1871-1947) and Alfred Coehn (1863-1938). The final version unifies almost a century's worth of effort in various disciplines into a single textbook.

In the first paper, "Einstein suggested that light be considered a collection of independent particles of energy, which he called 'light quanta.' Such a hypothesis, he argued, would provide an answer to the problem of black-body radiation where classical theories had failed, and would also explain several puzzling properties of fluorescence, photoionization and the photoelectric effect" (Norman). It was for this paper, together with one on the photoelectric effect ("Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung und Lichtabsorption"), published in 1906, that Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 (Norman 689; Weil 6). The second paper proved, according to Einstein himself, that "according to the molecular theory of heat, bodies of dimensions of the order of 1/1000 mm. suspended in liquid experience apparent random movement due to the thermal motion of molecules. Such movement of suspended bodies has actually been observed by biologists who call it Brownian molecular movement" (quoted by R. W. Clark, Einstein, New York, 1984, p. 87). Experimental verification of the predictions made in this paper contributed to proving the physical reality of molecules (Norman 690; Weil 8). The third paper, on the electrodynamics of moving bodies, was Einstein's first statement of the special theory of relativity. In it he argued that all motion is relative to the inertial system in which it is measured, and that matter and energy are equivalent. As he himself remarked, "it modifies the theory of space and time" (quoted by Clark, p. 87). - Visit our website for additional images and information. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Inscribed photo of Julia Marlowe]

1905 - 283 x 187 mm. inscribed by Julia Marlow, the prominent Shakespearean actor of her time, to Minnie Dwight Rouland. Julia Marlowe (Caldeck, Cumberland, England, August 17, 1865 - New York November 12, 1950) an English-born American actress known for her interpretations of William Shakespeare. Marlowe was born as Sarah Frances Frost to clogger and shoemaker John Frost and Sarah (Strong) Hodgson. When she was four her family immigrated to the United States. Her father, who was an avid fan of local sports, "fled to America in 1870 under the erroneous impression that he had destroyed a neighbor's eye by flicking a whip at him during a race." He changed his name to Brough and after first settling in Kansas he moved his family east to Portsmouth, Ohio and then Cincinnati. Marlowe obtained the nickname of "Fanny" and in her early teens began her career in the chorus of a juvenile opera company. While touring with the company for nearly a year performing Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore (1879), under the direction of Colonel Robert E.J. Miles (manager of the Cincinnati Opera House) she was given the part of Sir Joseph Porter. She later played in W. S. Gilbert's Pygmalion and Galatea. Her training and initial success was due primarily to Miles's sister-in-law Ada Dow. Still in Cincinnati, Fanny played her first Shakespearean roles as Balthazar in Romeo and Juliet and as Maria in Twelfth Night she was billed as Fanny Brough. Soon after Ada Dow took Fanny to New York where for several years she received voice training by Parsons Price. Finished with the voice training she changed her name to Julia Marlowe. As an unknown, Marlowe was, at first, unable to get a Shakesperean role, but she was determined. Colonel Miles, the new manager of the New York Bijou Opera House, gave her the opportunity to play for two weeks on tour in New England, starting in New London, Connecticut. This gave Marlowe the repertoire she needed. On 20 October 1887, her mother hired the Bijou for a matinee of Ingomar, the Barbarian (Maria Lovell's adaptation of Friedrich Halm's Der Sohn der Wildnis), in which Marlowe received acclaim which served as a stepping stone to Broadway. Julia Marlowe as Mary Tudor in When Knighthood Was in Flower. In early 1891, Marlowe came down with a severe case of typhoid fever while on tour in Philadelphia. The owner of the Philadelphia Times newspaper and his wife took Julia in and oversaw her return to health. At one point her face became so swollen that doctors considered lancing her face to release the toxins, but the good judgment of one doctor prevailed and a different treatment was arrived at which would fight the toxins and save her face for her acting career. Had this measure not been taken, she would never have been performing on Broadway by 1895 and would never have established herself as the leading American actress of Shakespeare in her day alongside actor E.H. Sothern. She made her Broadway debut in 1895 and went on to appear in more than seventy Broadway productions. With the money from her first Broadway success, she bought the townhouse known as River Mansion at 337 Riverside Drive. Her first husband was Broadway actor Robert Taber. Their marriage lasted from 1894 to 1900 and produced no children. Taber and Marlowe were married in 1894. According to many who knew her, Marlowe sacrificed her own self-interests many times in order to promote Taber's career. Despite this, however, professional jealousy ended their marriage in 1900. In a letter dated April 2nd, 1895 from Taber he writes "I herewith return your play. Mrs. Taber is grateful for your kindness in submitting it and notwithstanding its interest - She finds it unsuited for her present use. Very truly yours, Robert Taber". Taber was touring in England at the time of their divorce. In 1904, Marlowe starred as Mary Tudor in Paul Kester's adaptation of When Knighthood Was in Flower. . . .

Adventures of a Naval Officer. Edited by Sir Spenser St. John.

London Digby, Long & Co. 1905 - First edition pp.283. A very good copy in original cloth. Slightly cocked. Ostensibly written as a romanticised biography of Captain Hunter, covering his exploits in the Malay archipelago, but, according to Graham Irwin in 'Nineteenth Century Borneo', actually written by Spencer St. John. An Editor's note states "Those who lived in the Malay Archipelago between 1840 and 1860, will readily recall most of the incidents related in this book, as they were well known, and are not the imaginings of a romantic fancy".

        The Return of Sherlock Holmes.

London George Newnes Ltd 1905 - First English edition, 8vo, 16 plates by Sidney Paget, 4pp. advertisements, occasional foxing but mostly internally clean, bookseller's small blind-stamp to front free endpaper, original dark blue cloth lettered in gilt, slight wear to corners, minor bumping and rubbing to extremities, very small superficial split to cloth of joint near head of spine, but overall a very good copy. The first collected edition of 13 Sherlock Holmes stories that were originally published serially in the Strand Magazine in the UK and Collier's in the US. The collection commences with Holmes' shocking return to London after being presumed killed at the Reichenbach Falls and explains the period from 1891–94, or "The Great Hiatus" as it is known amongst Sherlock devotees. The last story in the work features Watson's statement that Holmes has retired and forbade him to publish any more stories. A hard book to find in such condition let alone better.         The Works.

Macmillan and Co. Ltd, London 1905 - Engraved frontipiece portrait, and extra-illustrated with eight photographs pasted to stiff paper with printed captions. 8vo. [188 x 120 x 46 mm]. viii, 900, [2] pp. Contemporary binding by Riviere & Son for The Army and Navy (signed with a gilt pallet on the front turn-in) in red goatskin, the covers tooled in gilt with a wide border of three fillets and massed pointillé volutes, fleurons and small tools, surrounded by double fillets and gouges. The spine divided into six panels by gilt tooled bands, lettered in the second and at the foot, the others with gilt compartments with floral centres and scroll corners, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt double fillet, the turn-ins with gilt rolls, green endleaves, gilt edges. (Small black ink stain on lower edge of one corner). A very good copy in a fine binding. One of many editions of Tennyson's Works publised by Macmillan, but this copy has an additional title-page printed in gold on stiffer paper: "The Works of Alfred Lord Tennyson. Illustrated with Photographs. London: Robert Riviere & Son". There are eight black and white photographs, of atmospheric scenes from the various works. Riviere was entering its "golden period" in 1905, producing luxury bindings for collectors on both sides of the Atlantic. The firm's relationship with J. H. Stonehouse at Sotheran is well documented. It is less well known that they had a pallet cut to sign the bindings supplied to the Army & Navy. The Army and Navy Co-operative Society Ltd was incorporated in 1871, being formed by a group of officers to share goods at reduced rates. The first store in Victoria Street, London, offered groceries, soon adding stationery, drapery, fancy goods, tailoring, a chemist and a gun department. Banking, furniture and an estate agents followed, and further stores were opened, including Plymouth, Bombay and Karachi. Signature of E. S. Croll on half-title.

        Etude sur la pendaison

      A. Maloine 1905 - Bibliothèque de criminologie. Vol. n°24. Sciences. 57 figures. Rare ! A relier !
