Translated into Hebrew by Massel, Joseph (1850-1912). With introduction and comments by Meir Ish Shalom (Meir Akhikar Friedmannr)(1831-1908). With additional commentary by N.S. Libowitz and afterwards by A.H. Rosneberg
Publisher: N.S. Libowitz and A.H. Rosenberg, New York, 1904. In Hebrew. Frontispiece (actually TWO copies of the frontispiece are here, 43, (2) pages. 152 x 121 mm. Joseph Massel (Yosef Mazl)(1850 near Vilnius - September 6, 1912 Manchester, England) was a Zionist activist, writer, Hebrew poet, and translator. He immigrated to Manchester, England in 1895 where he worked as a printer. He was a pioneer in the promotion of Hebrew as the national language, publishing works by Israel Cohen and Harry Sacher among others. He wrote Hebrew poems and translated English classics into Hebrew, including Milton?s Samon Agonistes, Longfellow?s Judas Maccabaeus and Fitzgerald?s Omar Khayyam. He also spent two years preparing a unique collection of 94 portraits called A Gallery of Hebrew Poets; 1725-1903. By the time Chaim Weizmann arrived in Manchester in 1904, Massel was living in a small street of the lower end of Cheetham Hill Road (where his Hebrew printing works was based) across from Red Bank and not far from the Central Synagogue. He was a part of Manchester?s Zionist community and vice-president of the Manchester Zionist Association. At that time he was the only person Weizmann knew in Manchester. Massel attended the First Zionist Congress (Basle, 1897) and had probably met Weizmann at the Second Zionist Congress (Basle, 1898). He showed Weizmann hospitality that Weizmann never forgot, collecting him from the train station, putting him up for the night and arranged lodgings for him the next day. Weizmann was later to refer to Massel as a "veritable angel" and described his Friday e … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed at the University Press, Cambridge, 1904. Illustrated by the author. Not the source book for the 2010 Norwegian film Trollhunter, to our knowledge at least, but instead a charmingly illustrated book by an artist best known perhaps as the illustrator for Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by M.R. James, a close friend of McBryde who had hoped his collection of stories would serve to showcase the artist's work. Unfortunately McBryde died having only completed four plates. Stoker, Bram
The Eighth UK printing published by London Archibald Constable & Co. Ltd in 1904. The eighth edition of Dracula was published by Constable in at least three variant bindings, each with a different embossed design to the upper board. They also all had different variations of the publishers name at the base of the spine. There was a cheap issue cloth variant, with the same pattern as one of the other more common variants, but in a coarser red rather than blue cloth, with the lettering and decoration picked out in black rather than red and gilt. This copy is the by far the scarcest of the three bindings with dark blue / black cloth and a red art nouveau design to the front panel with titling in gilt and the publisher's 'London' in red titling to the base of the spine. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition with the cloth for the most part very bright and clean. The book has a slight lean but the binding remains tight. There is a little fading of the cloth colouring to the spine but the red decorations and gilt titling remain bright. Mild pushing at the spine ends and one or two minor marks to the cloth. The text block is very lightly toned and spotted. Light offsetting to the end-papers and prelims with slightly heavier scattered spotting to a handful of pages. Free from inscriptions and erasures. An exceptionally well preserved copy and rarely found as such, which is protected in a loose Mylar archival cover. Loosely inserted is a cut signature of the author which comes with a CoA. This the eighth edition of Dracula was the last to be published by Constable before the … [Click Below for Full Description]

RIKER, James
Printed for the Author, New York, 1904. First edition. Royal octavo. 636pp. Publisher's blue-green cloth gilt. Fold out map. Chipping at the spine ends, but a sound good or better copy, and an interesting one. Contains three bookplates, several clippings about Harlem tipped-in, a legal judgment for a property in Harlem, two advertisements for this book from the author (one corrected by hand, presumably by the author) and of most interest, a Printed Letter Signed by the dedicatee of the book, Edgar Ketchum to John Townsend (one of the three bookplates), introducing Townsend to his friend Riker in 1877, and soliciting him to subscribe to the book. Ketchum was a prominent attorney and abolitionist, from Harlem. Those resentful of his abolitionist stance attempted to burn his house during the Draft Riots. Townsend was most likely John P. Townsend, a civilly prominent New York financier who also wrote on economics. *Howes* R297. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

HINE, Lewis W.
1904. A fascinating collection of seven images taken and printed by Lewis W. Hine, several of his nephew George C. Rich, all of which came from the estate of Rich himself (Hine married Sara Ann Rich in 1904, George was the son of her brother Walter). In 1908 Hine became the photographer for the The National Child Labor Committee, and by all accounts his photographs were instrumental in changing the child labor laws in the United States, particularly in mills, mines, and factories. In his efforts, he apparently utilized his nephew as a subject for his photographs illustrating child labor. As follows: 1. Approximately 5" x 7" gold-toned platinum portrait print on textured paper stock of an adolescent George C. Rich in cap. About fine. Captioned in pencil on verso in the hand of George Rich: "George Rich by Lewis Hine." 2. Approximately 5" x 7" gelatin silver portrait print of an adolescent George C. Rich in cap. Small chip in upper right corner, very good. Captioned in pencil on verso in the hand of George Rich: "George C. Rich Picture by Lewis Hine." Note this is the identical image to #1 in a different photographic process. 3. Approximately 5" x 7" gold-toned platinum portrait print of George C. Rich posed in profile. About fine. Captioned in pencil on verso in the hand of George Rich: "George C. Rich Picture by Lewis Hine." 4. Approximately 4" x 6" gelatin silver portrait print of W.C. Rich (George C. Rich's father). Small paper remnant on verso, about fine. Captioned in pencil on verso in the hand of George Rich: "W. C. Rich Picture by Lewis Hine." 5. Approximately 5.75" … [Click Below for Full Description]

PLAISTED, Ella J.
San Francisco, California, 1904. Oblong small octavo. Measuring 7.5" X 6". String-tied green suede over stiff paper boards with "Photos" pyrographically embossed onto the front board, along with an illustration using the same method. Contains 110 sepia-toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 5" x 6.5", with captions. Very good album with near fine photographs A photo album kept by Ella J. Plaisted from San Francisco in 1904. The album follows her life in San Francisco and the trips she took out of the city to other places around California. The album starts along the coast of San Francisco with images of "Arch Rock" and the ocean. Following this she traveled to Los Angeles with photos of Port Los Angeles, East Lake Park, and Santa Monica. Some of the photos were taken from the deck of the S.S. *Santa Rosa* with a caption which reads, "Ferris Wheel, Sutro Heights Park, and Baths, and the Cliff House from abroad the S.S. Santa Rosa." Two photos show women dressed as Native Americans and one group shot has Ella dressed in men's clothing posed with man dressed in women's clothes. There are also photos from a trip to Redwood Canyon which includes images of horses and cattle on a ranch and the surrounding mountains and a waterfall. One section of photos shows Ella at a camp site on a ranch and also includes photo strip prints. The final pages contain a few souvenir prints from a trip to Australia and New Zealand. Online research shows that Ella is mentioned in a few contemporary newspapers saying that she had filed for divorce in 1904 cit … [Click Below for Full Description]

1904. Oblong octavo. Cloth over flexible boards with photographic image of an oncoming train cut into the shape of a badge. Aside from the cover image the album holds 46 gelatin silver images; 42 of them are 4.5" x 3.75" mounted one to a page, each with a tissue guard, and with a detailed typed caption on the facing page. The final four are small 1.25" x 1.5" portraits of women mounted on a single page and captioned. Modest wear at the joints, a couple of images removed, probably by the compiler (no captions were present), and one leaf removed (the caption is still present), very good with near fine images. A very engaging album by a Medford High School student and an enlightened and intrepid amateur photographer. The compiler is often pictured but only captioned as "Myself", despite his scrupulously identifying everyone else in the album; the captions suggest that the images were taken in partnership with Gilbert Glasow, who is likewise identified in several images. The album begins in the Winter of 1904 and pictures the compiler and his fellow students building a two story shanty that they refer to as the "Science Building" and which they used apparently for experiments with electricity and telephones, including one image of the compiler talking on a phone, and another of various electrical apparatus created by Mr. Glasow. He also apparently worked part-time at the Wisconsin Central Railway station in Medford, and is pictured with the other personnel at the station. Additionally there are a few well-captioned images of moving trains: "W.C. Ry #102 southbound taken about o … [Click Below for Full Description]
