         THEODORE ROOSEVELT THE CITIZEN

The Outlook Company, New York 1904 - Second Printing, in publisher's original decorated cloth. Illustrated with plates. This copy virtually unique as it is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by both the author and the subject, as President. Riis's inscription is dated 5 August 1908. Roosevelt writes: "with the best wishes of/Theodore Roosevelt/The White House/Jan. 18th 1909." The addition of "The White House" by Roosevelt is notable as prior to his administration, the residence was known as the "President's Palace," the "President's House," and the "Executive Mansion." It was Roosevelt who officially named it "The White House" in 1901. Of the many books signed by Roosevelt we have both handled and seen, we have never before encountered one in which he has noted his official residence along with his signature. Jacob Riis, among the most dedicated advocates for America's oppressed and downtrodden, arrived in New York from his native Denmark at the age of 21 in 1870. A pioneer in photojournalism, Riis photographed and wrote about the slums and tenements of a New York in the dawn of a new century. Riis came to Roosevelt's attention through his 1890 book HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES. As Commissioner of the New York City Police Department, Roosevelt accompanied Riis on his evening travels through the slums and witnessed firsthand the inhumane conditions endured by many of New York's inhabitants. In his 1901 book MAKING OF AN AMERICAN, Riis wrote of Roosevelt: "It could not have been long after I wrote HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES that he came to the Evening Sun office one day looklng for me. I was out and he left his card merely writing on the back of it that he had read my book and had 'come to help'. That was all, and it tells the whole story of the man. I loved him from the day I first saw him; nor ever in all the years that have passed has he failed of the promise made then. No one ever helped as he did. For two years, we were brothers on Mulberry Street." Roosevelt, in turn, wrote of Riis after his death: "It is difficult for me to write of Jacob Riis only from the public standpoint. He was one of my truest and closest friends. I have ever prized the fact that once, in speaking of me, he said, 'since I met him he has been my brother.' I have not only admired and respected him beyond measure, but I have loved him dearly and I mourn him as if he were one of my own family." Hinges cracked and neatly repaired.          [Photo Album]: Medford, Wisconsin, 1904-1905

Near Fine. Oblong octavo. Cloth over flexible boards with photographic image of an oncoming train cut into the shape of a badge. Aside from the cover image the album holds 46 gelatin silver images; 42 of them are 4.5" x 3.75" mounted one to a page, each with a tissue guard, and with a detailed typed caption on the facing page. The final four are small 1.25" x 1.5" portraits of women mounted on a single page and captioned. Modest wear at the joints, a couple of images removed, probably by the compiler (no captions were present), and one leaf removed (the caption is still present), very good with near fine images.A very engaging album by a Medford High School student and an enlightened and intrepid amateur photographer. The compiler is often pictured but only captioned as "Myself", despite his scrupulously identifying everyone else in the album; the captions suggest that the images were taken in partnership with Gilbert Glasow, who is likewise identified in several images. The album begins in the Winter of 1904 and pictures the compiler and his fellow students building a two story shanty that they refer to as the "Science Building" and which they used apparently for experiments with electricity and telephones, including one image of the compiler talking on a phone, and another of various electrical apparatus created by Mr. Glasow. He also apparently worked part-time at the Wisconsin Central Railway station in Medford, and is pictured with the other personnel at the station. Additionally there are a few well-captioned images of moving trains: "W.C. Ry #102 southbound taken about one mile north of Medford station. Mr. Glasow stood in the center of the track to take this view and the engineer may be seen blowing the whistle for him to get off. I might add that he did not have any time to spare when he did get off." The young daredevils were not averse to danger, and the caption of another arresting picture, of the Winchester Hotel, notes that it was taken from the top of a telephone pole; another, of a quarry, is taken from atop a high stone crusher. The album has a pleasing array of subjects that include the town fire chief posing with his new steam fire engine ("his pet"); a large horse-drawn log sledge, the boys at a deer hunting camp outside of town, the boys on bicycles at a lake out of town, and a couple of images of the switchboards and apparatus, taken at an A.T.&T. office in Minneapolis, "taken by flashlight". Also shows the small Class of 1905 of Medford High School, horseback riding in and along a creek (where the compiler pays particular attention to the reflections off the water), and pictures of several important buildings in Medford.Medford is in central Wisconsin, roughly midway between Wausau and Eau Claire. The town grew up around the railway. Both the subjects and the quality of the images here represented are superior to most amateur albums of the time.

Vincent van Gogh. 40 Photocollographies d'Après ses Tableaux et Dessins.

Amsterdam Versluys 1904 - Portfolio, beige halflinnen, gedecoreerde platten, katoenen touw, compleet met 40 platen. fine condition . 0 g.

Harrie Kuyten (1883-1952) - Signed Oil, Still Life with Geraniums.

Mid 20th Century - DescriptionWe are proud to present a stunning still life by the highly sought after Dutch artist Harrie Kuyter. This interior still life is painted with bold, impasto brushwork typical of the Impressionist influence present in Kuyter's work, and features vibrant hues. The painting is excellently presented in a later dark wooden frame. Signed. On board. ConditionIn general the appearance is excellent. The varnish is clear and even, and the paint layer is stable and sound. There are some tiny retouching visible under UV light, mainly to the petals of the right hand flower and to the orange book. There are some minor spots of surface dirt typical for a painting of this age. There is an area with thin passages of paint above the flowers - this may be due to light surface abrasion, or it may be intentional by the artist. The frame is in good condition.Biography The paintings of Harrie Kuyten has fetched high sums of money at Christie's Auctioneers and other auction houses in the Netherlands (please see above photos for similar examples). Harrie Kuyten was a Dutch artist born in Utrecht, full name Henricus Johannes Kuyten. He was an engraver, lithographer, woodcutter, draughtsman and painter who belonged to the Bergense (Bergen) School of Dutch artists. He studied at the Akademie voor Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of Fine Arts), Antwerp from 1904 to 1905 and was awarded a Royal Scholarship for three years. After travelling around several countries he settled in Amsterdam in 1914. Later on, having stayed in Austria, Hungary and Paris, he lived in Schoorl. His work is influenced by the Impressionists, as seen in the use of colour and brushwork in the present painting, and the French Fauvists. He painted harbour views, landscapes, cityscapes, animals, still lifes, interiors, self-portraits and nudes. After travelling around several countries he settled in Amsterdam in 1914. Later on, having stayed in Austria, Hungary and Paris, he settled down at Schoorl. He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam, and the Onafhankelijken (Independents), Amsterdam.
