Vol 2: xxiv, 500 pages + [1 leaf plate title] + [7 leaves plates numbered XIV to XX] + [16 pages ads]. Both volumes publisher's olive green board gilt. The first edition of this famous work was published in 1873, the second edition in 1881 and the third edition in 1892 (each with important updates). We offer here the 1904 printing third edition in excellent condition. "Maxwell once remarked that the aim of his Treatise was not to expound the final view of his electromagnetic theory, which he had developed in a series of five major papers between 1855 and 1868; rather, it was to educate himself by presenting a view of the stage he had reached in his thinking. Accordingly, the work is loosely organized on historical and experimental, rather than systematically deductive lines. It extended Maxwell's ideas beyond the scope of his earlier work in many directions, producing a highly fecund (if somewhat confusing) demonstration of the special importance of electricity to physics as a whole. He began the investigation of moving frames of reference, which in Einstein's hands were to revolutionize physics ; gave proofs of the existence of electromagnetic waves that paved the way for Hertz's discovery of radio waves; worked out connections between the electrical and optical qualities of bodies that would lead to modern solid-state physics; and applied Tait's quate … [Click Below for Full Description]

Binding a bit bent, with very light spotting to rear panel and some wear to rear joint. Lightly toned throughout. A nice copy. Cloth. "After the discovery of thorium emanations in 1900 new concepts of atomic structure followed from the brilliant experiments of Rutherford. A new theory of atomic disintegration was proposed, then the nuclear nature of the atom. He discovered and named alpha, beta, and gamma rays emitted from radioactive elements and predicted that disintegrations of some radioactive elements would generate helium. He also produced in the laboratory the first artificial transmutation of one element into another." (Dibner, Heralds of Science #51) "The first textbook on radioactivity, surveying contemporary knowledge of the entire field. Research progressed so rapidly in this area that the second edition, published only a year later, had to be enlarged by fifity percent. The book includes a discussion of Rutherford's revolutionary transformation theory, developed during the period 1902-1903, which states that radioactivity is a by-product of the transmutation of one element into another." (Norman 1870) The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1908 was awarded to Ernest Rutherford "for his investigations into the disintegration of the elements, and the chemistry of radioactive substances." Laurel Edition, limited to 1000 copies, of which this is set #231. Percy Bysshe Shelley (4 August 1792 - 8 July 1822) was one of the major English Romantic poets, who is regarded by some as among the finest lyric and philosophical poets in the English language, and one of the most influential. A radical in his poetry as well as in his political and social views, Shelley did not see fame during his lifetime, but recognition of his achievements in poetry grew steadily following his death. Shelley was a key member of a close circle of visionary poets and writers that included Lord Byron, John Keats, Leigh Hunt, Thomas Love Peacock and his own second wife, Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein. Shelley is perhaps best known for classic poems such as "Ozymandias", "Ode to the West Wind", "To a Skylark", "Music, When Soft Voices Die", "The Cloud" and The Masque of Anarchy. His other major works include a groundbreaking verse drama, The Cenci (1819), and long, visionary, philosophical poems such as Queen Mab (later reworked as The Daemon of the World), Alastor, The Revolt of Islam, Adonais, Prometheus Unbound (1820) - widely con … [Click Below for Full Description]

St Petersburg A. Marks, 1904. First separate edition; 8vo (22 x 15 cm); 62pp. advertisement leaf at rear; original printed wrappers with art nouveau design, internally fresh, slight wear to covers with small loss to top of lower cover, spine glued; a good copy. The Cherry Orchard, an enduring classic of Russian literature was performed at Chekhov's beloved Moscow Arts Theatre in January 1904 under the direction of Konstantin Stanislavski. The play was branded a drama by critics but despite its tragic ending Chekhov always believed that it was a comedy and there was in fact nothing dramatic about it all. The play is centered around the vast changes Russia was experiencing at the turn of the century and its socio-political themes divided spectators. Conservatives reproached the writer for his sympathy with the 'new generation' and liberals were unhappy with the outdated language the supposedly modern characters used. Despite the context in which the play was written it is a fundamentally universal story of a faded world receding before modern realities and it remains a cornerstone of 20th century theatre around the world. Oxford: At the Clarendon Press 1904. Later printing. 2 volumes. Vol 1: xxxii, 506, [1] pages + [1 leaf plate title] + [13 leaves of plates numbered I to XIII]. Vol 2: xxiv, 500 pages + [1 leaf plate title] + [7 leaves plates numbered XIV to XX] + [16 pages ads]. Both volumes publisher's olive green board gilt. Bright clean lettering, a very nice set on the shelf. Cloth. He began the investigation of moving frames of reference, which in Einstein's hands were to revolutionize physics ; gave proofs of the existence of electromagnetic waves that paved the way for Hertz's discovery of radio waves; worked out connections between the electrical and optical qualities of bodies that would lead to modern solid-state physics; and applied Tait's quaternio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Salvador Dali 1904-1989 HIDDEN FACES owned by Dali with his bookplate. Copy # 1 out of only 100 numbered copies produced, and given to Dali in 1973 from the London publisher, Peter Owen. Bound in vellum and marbled boards, this is a handsome deluxe edition of Dali's only novel, "Hidden Faces." What makes this copy very special is that it belonged to Salvador Dali. It has his bookplate on the front pastedown, and it is numbered, as noted above, one of only 100 numbered copies ever produced. This Dali signed book comes with the original red slipcase and pamphlet titled, "Postface to Hidden Faces, Comprising Objective Chance and Reverie by Salvador Dali." The pamphlet also has Dali's bookplate and is numbered 1 out of 100 copies. This auction also includes one of my favorite photographs that I took of Dali. I knew him during the early part of my professional career, and I also knew his manager-agent, Enrique Sabater. This book was given to me by Dali. Please see my listings for other Dali items, including a signed drawing, and a signed print of his most famous painting, "The Persistence of Memory.".
