Initials and Miniatures of the IXth, Xth, and XIth Centuries from Mozarabic Manuscripts of of Santo Domingo de Silos in the British Museum

[Printed by the De Vinne Press], New York 1904 - One of 350 copies, unnumbered. Presentation copy, inscribed in 1923 by the author. Elephant Folio - over 15" to 23" tall. Archer M[ilton] Huntington (1870-1955) was a lifelong friend of the arts and philanthropist; known for his scholarly works in the field of Hispanic Studies, he founded The Hispanic Society of America in New York City; his cousin, Henry E. Huntington, founded the renowned Huntington Library in California. This volume was presented by the author in 1923 to Elijah Clarence Hills (1867-1932), a Professor in Florida and Colorado and a prolific author of Spanish-related books. The inscription is on Mr. Huntington's calling card, with "Mr." being crossed out, as follows: "To my friend E.C. Hills / with the high regard & / admiration of (printed name, Archer Huntington) / 1923". The calling card is tipped onto the front pastedown directly beneath Mr. Hills' elegant bookplate. This work was published to preserve the illuminated decorations and initials from the 9th through 11th centuries from manuscripts in the monastery of Silos, near Castile, which over many centuries and the ravages of many wars were at risk of being forever lost. As Mr. Huntington says in the Introduction: "The rarity alone of documents dating, as these do, from the ninth to the eleventh century renders them of the greatest interest; but where, in addition, such remarkable palaeographical and archaeological details are found, and such peculiarity in the application of design to the decoration of books, they become worthy of extended study and fit subjects for reproduction". ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in tan cloth with the front board richly decorated as an illuminated manuscript in rust and green, letters outlined in black, green lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, plain endpapers, bookplate and author's inscription tipped onto front pastedown as referred to above, title page with two decorative initial capitals, volume opens with a four-page Introduction by Mr. Huntington, followed by a 3-page list of the Manuscripts used, followed by the illustrations which are printed on the recto only of each page with their number on the opposite page, printed on verso only, two tissue guards (we presume original with the rest having been lost); Elephant Folio in size (approximately 17" tall), unpaginated with approximately 100 leaves; limited edition of 350 copies, unnumbered, author's inscription as set forth above. ***CONDITION: Overall very good plus, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the prior owner bookplate and authorial inscription, it is entirely free of prior owner markings. There is some old dampstaining and soiling to the boards, we had a professional restorer do some minor restoration to the head and tail of the spine and the corners, which are all now sturdy (name available upon request). ***POSTAGE: Please note that this is an extremely large and heavy volume, therefore additional postage will apply. We are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international customers, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Printed for Charles Meunier. Set in mint condition. Pierre Félix Louis (1870-1925), also known as Pierre Louÿs, was a French poet and author. His pen names were Pierre Louis, Chrysis, Peter Lewys and Pibrac. He founded a literary review, La Conque in 1891, where works not only by Parnassian and symbolist literary role models were published, such as Mallarmé, Moréas, Leconte de Lisle or Verlaine, but also writings by young and still unknown poets such as Valéry, André Gide and Louÿs himself. His first, small collection of poems, Astarté, appeared in 1891 in l’Art indépendent, followed by "Chrysis ou la cérémonie matinale" in 1893; Poésies de Méléagre, translated in 1893, "Lêda ou la louange des bienheureux ténèbres" in 1893, "La maison sur le Nil ou les Apparences de la Vertu" in 1894, "Scènes de la vie des courtisanes de Lucien de Samosate", translated in 1894, and the same year "Les Chansons de Bilitis" which was his best-known work and a literary hoax. Effectively, Louÿs passed his own poems off as those of a contemporary of the Greek Sappho (died ca. 570 BCE). Size: 4to. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

THE SAINT AND THE OUTLAW AND OTHER STORIES. By Michael Wood [pseudonym]

London: Theosophical Publishing Society ... New York: John Lane, 1904.. Octavo, pp. [1-7] 8-236 [237-240: ads] [note: last ad leaf is a cancel headed "ELEMENTARY BOOKS ON THEOSOPHY"] original pictorial green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in white and black, all edges trimmed. First edition, variant binding. "Collection of thirteen supernatural tales with a dreamy, mystical atmosphere that places them near, if not in, the Celtic Twilight: the style is less vaporous than Fiona Macleod's, though not as vigorous as Yeats'. The mysticism also places them in the realm of religious writing. The author clearly has a moral intent, yet the stories usually avoid religiosity and sentimentality. The 'moral' is often hard to pin down in simplistic terms, as one might expect from someone who was a regular contributor to THE THEOSOPHICAL REVIEW. In other words, the approach is more 'spiritual' than 'religious.' It echoes also the medievalism of William Morris' romances -- a resemblance underlined by the uncial typography of the cover. The imagery is vivid and the writing style relatively free of authorial intrusion. The material merits the attention of the student of golden age English supernatural fiction, and it's a little curious that it has received so little as yet, when collections that are much inferior to it are so well-known among specialists. Vincent Starrett devotes a chapter to her in his BURIED CAESARS, recalling how he came across her WILLOW WEAVER by chance, then quickly acquired and read nine of her other books. He praises her for her ability to convey the 'incommunicable.'" - Robert Eldridge. The author's real name was Joy Hooper, as John Eggeling discovered. She was "a devout mystic who dedicated herself to prayer and became an anchorite on the Isle of Wight" (obituary in St. Michael's News, June, 1946). Not in any of the standard genre bibliographies. Owner's signature dated October 1928 on front free endpaper; neatly inked index of story themes on rear free endpaper. A very good copy. COPAC records 3 copies. OCLC records 3 copies. A scarce book.       Privately printed, 1904., Portland - First edition. 8vo. Original grey printed wrappers, 134 [1] pp., introduction, illustrated, plates. The author's reminiscences, written primarily for his friends, tells of his travels and experiences throughout the West and Alaska. He tells of Indian scares, gold mining, outlaws, buffalo hunts, prairie fires, a Nebraska blizzard, the Black Hills, the Rocky Mountains, Custer's massacre, and much more. Six Guns 912 says, "Rare." "Privately printed for friends. The author died while the book was in press. The printer, no doubt believing that he would not recover his printing costs, scrapped almost the entire edition, only a few copies escaping; hence its rarity. It contains material on some outlaws of the frontier and tells about the hangings by the vigilantes and about the last of Laramie road agents." Howes H142 says "Most of the edition "scrapped" to a paper mill." Graff 1760 says "Contains a narrative of a trip across the plains in '65. -EDG." Phillips American Sporting Books p. 155, "Chapter on a buffalo stampede." Over-sized covers lightly chipped at fore-edges, faint vertical crease to the front cover, light wear to the spine ends, else a very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

         THE EVER NEW HORIZON - Alma-Tadema, 1904.

Prijs: ? 2.150,- (incl. lijst).

Large 8vo, publisher's original navy-blue cloth gilt lettered on spines, with gilt lettering to the upper cover. xxxvi, 470; xiii, 471-1018. A handsome and honest set, internally bright and fine, the cloth is age mellowed but remains dark and attractive and all the gilt work is well preserved. Rear hinge of one volume with cosmetic separation at the pastedown. SCARCE FIRST EDITION SET, HANDSOME AND WELL PRESERVED. Johnston’s superb description of the physical geography, botany, zoology, anthropology, language and history of the Uganda territory. Handsomely presented, the books are replete with photographs and illustrations of Uganda at the turn of the century. Copies in cloth are now quite scarce. Johnston was early on an explorer and traveller to Africa and these volumes are typical of the very best produced writing in travel and exploration of the period. Johnston began his travels in Africa at the age of 21 with his 1879-1880 journey to the interior of Tunisa as a student of painting, architecture, and languages. This trip sparked the passion for travel and exploration in the wilds of the African continent that he would spend the next several decades fulfilling. His journeys and his leadership potential were first brought to the attention of the Royal Geographical Society and the British Association in 1883 when he met H.M. Stanley and traveled with him to the remote river above the Stanley Pool in the Congo, a virgin territory little known to other Europeans at that time. From there his travels and responsibilities expanded rapidly; he was commissioned to lead a scientific expedition to to Mount Kilmanjaro beginning in Zanzibar in 1884, the success of which led to his apopintment as British vice-consul and eventually acting consul in Cameroon and the Niger Delta. He held a number of government positions through the next 20 years, perhaps best known for his "Cape-to-Cairo" scheme, a phrase coined in the London Times in August of 1888. The plan entailed having British influence in an unbroken line from Alexandria to Cape Town, but was foiled in July of 1890 when the British were forced to give up their sphere of influence north of Lake Tanganyika to the Germans. His later days were spent organizing British administration in Uganda and Liberia as well as writing about his life experiences in Africa. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
