Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Virginia, Maine, 1904. Oblong quarto measuring 12.25" x 10". Black cloth over flexible boards with "photographs," embossed in gilt. Contains 420 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2.5" x 2" and 4.5" x 3.5" with captions. Tears on the spine ends with creases and tidemarks on the boards thus very good album with fine photographs. A family travel album exploring places around Massachusetts from 1896 through 1904. The beginning of the album shows the family sailing from Boston to Brookline and then starting their journey to places in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Virginia, and Maine including, Needham, Dover, Blue Hill Reservation, Beaver Brook Reservation, Ashby, Kearange Village, Shenandoah, the Whiteface Mountains, Penobscot Bay, and among others. The photographer was clearly fond of animals as there are many pictures of dogs, several cats, chickens, horses, cows, sheep, a pet squirrel, and a pet fox. Many of these photos take place on "Blood Hill," an area used for slaughtering animals. However, today it is a part of a walking trail in Maine. The countryside is pictured showing the landscape of the forests and mountain ranges visited as well as the children working or playing on the farms. One humorous photograph depicts a group of boys posing together around a large pile of hay while one boy is falling onto it. In a more serious set of photographs, a forest fire is seen burning high up in the trees. One part of the album includes pictures of war ships and hospital boats lined up and a parade for the nav … [Click Below for Full Description]

Salvador Dali 1904-1989 HIDDEN FACES owned by Dali with his bookplate. Copy # 1 out of only 100 numbered copies produced, and given to Dali in 1973 from the London publisher, Peter Owen. Bound in vellum and marbled boards, this is a handsome deluxe edition of Dali's only novel, "Hidden Faces." What makes this copy very special is that it belonged to Salvador Dali. It has his bookplate on the front pastedown, and it is numbered, as noted above, one of only 100 numbered copies ever produced. This Dali signed book comes with the original red slipcase and pamphlet titled, "Postface to Hidden Faces, Comprising Objective Chance and Reverie by Salvador Dali." The pamphlet also has Dali's bookplate and is numbered 1 out of 100 copies. This auction also includes one of my favorite photographs that I took of Dali. I knew him during the early part of my professional career, and I also knew his manager-agent, Enrique Sabater. This book was given to me by Dali. Please see my listings for other Dali items, including a signed drawing, and a signed print of his most famous painting, "The Persistence of Memory.".

ALDRICH, Thomas Bailey
Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1904. Fine. Hardcover. First edition. A trifle edgeworn, still easily fine in a very good example of the very uncommon printed dustwrapper with small splits, nicks, and tears. An epic dramatic poem that was the basis for two films, most importantly D.W. Griffith's 1914 version, which was his first feature length film, the first of his "epics," and the film that laid the groundwork for his future spectaculars. The budget shocked the Biograph film company, and Griffith was soon let go, to the eventual benefit of all of filmdom. Exceptionally uncommon in jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Chivers, Cedric, binder.] Goldsmith, Oliver.
London: J.M. Dent, 1904. Cedric Chivers (1853-1920) developed the technique of "vellucent binding," whereby an artist would paint on a thin surface, and a sheet of vellum, shaved to translucent thinness, was laid over it, with the result bound over boards. The significant achievement is that "for the first time in the history of the bibliopegistic art the actual work of the artist, undiluted by a translation through the hands of mechanics, is here visible in the decoration of the book" (Chivers catalogue, Books in Beautiful Bindings). Octavo. [xviii], 242, [2] pp. Colored frontispiece and title-page and twenty-three colored plates. In a full velucent binding by Cedric Chivers of Bath. Spine and front cover gilt-tooled in architectural design. Front cover features classical columns, with decoration at top and bottom, including flower ornaments and an urn with fruit, back cover gilt paneled. The front cover and spine are richly colored in shades of pink, purple, green, and yellow. Top edge gilt, pink patterned endpapers. Edges lightly foxed. A near fine copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

COBURN, Alvin Langdon
1904. The photogravure measures 223 x 172mm. It is signed at the bottom in pencil and dated on the verso "1904 / August 1st" by Alvin Langdon Coburn. This date fits with that given by the National Portrait Gallery for the same (unsigned) photogravure in their collection, see ref. NPG x87256. It is in near fine condition noting a small rubbed dot, 2cm in diagonally from the top right corner. On the verso, there is a 0.5cm toned band down each side. A lovely example of this George Bernard Shaw portrait, rarely found with the photographer's signature. Rainford & Parris Books welcomes enquiries, so please do not hesitate to ask if you require further images or have any questions. All books are packaged with great care. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

POTTER, Beatrix
F. Warne & Co, 1904. First edition. 12mo. Grey paper covered boards with colour onlay to upper cover. Inscribed by Beatrix Potter (Peter Rabbit) on the half title, "For 'Bitty Roses' with love from [drawing of a rabbit.]" A poor copy of the book, sometime rebacked with tape and with tape strengthening, but rare with Potter's inscription and ink sketch. Pictorial endpapers and 27 colour plates by Beatrix Potter. Potter inscribed two books to "Bitty Roses" this copy was in the collection of Judy Taylor for a number of decades, the other sold at Christies New York in the sale of Doris Frohnsdorff's collection, 1997. It is most uncommon to encounter books sent on behalf of Potter's rabbits and although this book is defective the provenance and inscription with the drawing make it rather special. Rabelais, Francis; Robinson, W. Heath (Illustrations)
London: Grant Richards, 1904. Robinson, W. Heath. First Edition. First printing of this work with illustrations by W. Heath Robinson, two volumes (complete), quarto size, 815 total pp. A monumental collection of Francois Rabelais' (ca. 1493-1553) satirical novels of the life of two giants, Gargantua and Pantagruel, this two-volume set contains all five books telling of the adventures of these two characters; the text is rampant with Rabelais' wit, as well as baudy and often grotesque humour. Both volumes are filled with illustrations by William Heath Robinson (1872-1944), an exemplary book illustrator and cartoonist, "the only British illustrator to become a 'household name'" (Houfe). A contemporary of acclaimed illustrators Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, Robinson is best known for his cartoons portraying elaborate and whimsical machinary made to complete simple tasks; in fact, his fame was such that the term "Heath Robinson" was used in the United Kingdom to refer to such machinary, much as the term "Rube Goldberg" was used in the United States. This set is the first edition with Robinson's illustrations, published in 1904; this set in remarkable condition (see details below). ___DESCRIPTION: Full white cloth, gilt illustrations and lettering on the front board and spine, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, endpapers with illustrations in red, each volume with a black-and-white illustrated frontispieces by W. Heath Robinson, in Volume I captioned "Gargantua", in Volume II captioned "We tickled it off there with copious cramming.", each with tissue guard, title p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Horace; Smith, Clement Lawrence (Editor); Metcalf, Henry Aiken
Boston: Bibliophile Society, 1901, 1904. Limited Edition. Ten volumes, complete, no. 63 of 467, octavo size, 1956 total pp., engraved frontispieces signed by the artist in pencil. The Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65 BCE - 8 BCE), known as Horace in the English-speaking world, penned a prolific amount of verses, often employing iambic metre; this ten-volume set comprises his odes and epodes, with a thorough examination of the text and a bibliography. "A Thousand Horatian Quotations" contains quotes about Horace, categorised as "appreciations", by ancient writers, as well as pithy statements by Horace himself. The title pages are graced with decorative borders by American illustrator Howard Pyle (1853-1911), who illustrated numerous books for young people and started his own school of art, The Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art; Pyle also illustrates the frontispieces in a few of the volumes in this set, which he signed in pencil. A beautifully printed set, with many illustrations scattered throughout the set, "Odes and Epodes" is an exceptional way to engage with the work of Horace, with the beauty of lyrical poetry and the academic examinations of the text. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter cream paper with brown paper boards, black lettering and decoration on the spine, fore- and bottom edges uncut, all volumes except Volume II, part II, Volume IV part II, and the Quotations Volume with black-and-white engraved frontispiece signed by the artist in pencil, with an extra identical engraving bound in, all with lettered tissue guards, title page with black-and-white decorati … [Click Below for Full Description]

Huntington, Archer M. (Introduction)
New York: [Printed by the De Vinne Press], 1904. First and Limited Edition. One of 350 copies, unnumbered. Presentation copy, inscribed in 1923 by the author. Elephant Folio - over 15" to 23" tall. Archer M[ilton] Huntington (1870-1955) was a lifelong friend of the arts and philanthropist; known for his scholarly works in the field of Hispanic Studies, he founded The Hispanic Society of America in New York City; his cousin, Henry E. Huntington, founded the renowned Huntington Library in California. This volume was presented by the author in 1923 to Elijah Clarence Hills (1867-1932), a Professor in Florida and Colorado and a prolific author of Spanish-related books. The inscription is on Mr. Huntington's calling card, with "Mr." being crossed out, as follows: "To my friend E.C. Hills / with the high regard & / admiration of (printed name, Archer Huntington) / 1923". The calling card is tipped onto the front pastedown directly beneath Mr. Hills' elegant bookplate. This work was published to preserve the illuminated decorations and initials from the 9th through 11th centuries from manuscripts in the monastery of Silos, near Castile, which over many centuries and the ravages of many wars were at risk of being forever lost. As Mr. Huntington says in the Introduction: "The rarity alone of documents dating, as these do, from the ninth to the eleventh century renders them of the greatest interest; but where, in addition, such remarkable palaeographical and archaeological details are found, and such peculiarity in the application of design to the decoration of books, they become wor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alcott, Louisa M[ay]; Kennedy, J.W. Ferguson, [Mrs.] (Illustrations)
Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, (1904). Kennedy, J.W. Ferguson [Mrs.]. Duodecimo size, 48 pp., with scarce original dust jacket. Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888), author of the classic and much-loved "Little Women" books, abolitionist and feminist, grew up surrounded by many of the 19th-century literary lights of New England, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Spurred on to writing both by internal passion as well as financial need, she was a prolific author. The two stories in this volume were intially published separately: "Morning Glories" in 1868 and "Queen Aster" in 1887, as part of "Lulu's Library" (LuLu was Louisa's niece, the daughter of her sister May, and named for her). Both stories are charming, with "Morning Glories" being the story of a small girl named Daisy, who has been ill; her aunt plays a gentle trick upon her and she recovers health and the joy of the beauty of nature. "Queen Aster" is a charming fantasy story about flowers who can talk, and their desire to have a new King and Queen. This volume was published by Little, Brown in the summer of 1904 as part of their "Children's Friend Series" (being announced in "The Publisher's Weekly" dated August 13, 1904) and contains two illustrations in black and white by [Mrs.] J. W. Ferguson Kennedy (Barbara Bradford); we were unable to find out much about this elusive illustrator, other than several mentions of her work in contemporary Boston-area publications. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in light blue cloth with green and pink floral illustration on … [Click Below for Full Description]

LYON & HEALY
Chicago: Lyon & Healy, 1904. Small folio (305 x 228 mm). Black-and-white portrait of Royal de Forest Hawley, and 36 mounted plates, of which most in color; printed tissue guards preserved. Original red cloth-backed boards, printed paper label on spine. A very good, if slightly shaken, copy, spine label worn, and with some wear at corners, a few short marginal tears and occasional light handling creases. Item #404950 FIRST EDITION, number 1399 of 2000 copies. With a fine provenance: From the collection of David W. Young, who bought the "Goding" Amati that is described herein. Young inscribes the front flyleaf: "This rare book purchased from R. Wurlitzer in year 1961, at time I obtained the 'Goding' Amati violin of 1662 from Lyon & Healy. - signed - David W. Young at 18508 Clyde Ave. Homewood, Ill U.S.A." Another similar inscription appears on another flyleaf. The "Goding" Amati is described in the catalogue on p. 48, within the broader historical context of the famous Cremonese violin makers: "The Goding Amati is covered with a coating of magnificent varnish of a golden brown color, the texture of which is soft; and the evenness of skill of its application invokes the admiration of the connoisseur at a glance. It formed a part of the famous James Goding collection, to which the King Joseph Guarneri also belonged..." Hawley's collection was a veritable encyclopedia of classical violin making. Lyon & Healy acquired the collection in total after his death in 1893, and published this catalogue, which established their reputation as America's eminent dealer at the beginning of th … [Click Below for Full Description]

DARWENT, C E
Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore & Yokohama Kelly and Walsh Limited 1904. 1st edition, printed in 1904, of this important early guide book. With numerous photos and period advertisements. It was the first city guide on Shanghai published in a foreign language, and - at the time - was a very useful source of information about Shanghai, though mostly focussed on the foreign settlements. [x], xx, 221, [xxiv] pp. Black ink mark to front cover. Light wear to spine ends but tight and clean copy. The inside is clean and in a very good condition. Lacks the original map to the back pocket. A fascinating insight in to China at that time - with everything from guidance on the price of hiring a sampan or a rickshaw, to ‘handy’ phrases in Pidgin-English! It represents a certain view of the city; through the eyes of a Western resident in the early 20th century. [Attributes: First Edition]
