A series of stereoscopic views illustrating human anatomy, each view having accompanying text, each of the images and its the text being mounted on one sheet of card.         Ist die Trägheit eines Körpers von seinem Energieinhalt abhängig?Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1905. First edition.

A very fine and completely unsophisticated copy, without stamps or any other markings in strictly contemporary cloth binding, Einstein's groundbreaking 1905 paper, the introduction and derivation of the most famous equation in modern physics: <i>E=mc2</i>. "A few months after first publishing the theory of relativity, Einstein discovered something that particularly intrigued him; the relation between inertial mass and energy. He wrote to Conrad Habicht during the summer of 1905: 'One more consequence of the paper on electrodynamics has also occurred to me. The principle of relativity, in conjunction with Maxwell's equations, requires that mass be a direct measure of the energy contained in a body; light carries mass with it. A noticeable decrease of mass should occur in the case of radium. The argument is amusing and seductive, but for all I know the Lord might be laughing over it and leading me around by the nose'." (Stachel, Einstein's Miraculous Year). Einstein continued to work late into the summer on this "amusing and seductive" problem before proving the mass-energy relationship that would become known throughout the world as the simple and elegant <i>E=mc2</i>. Received by Annalen der Physik on September 27, Einstein's derivation and proof of his most famous equation was a dramatic contribution to his 'annus mirabilis' of 1905. Weil *10.. In: Annalen der Physik, 4th series, vol. 18, pp. 639-641. The complete volume offered here in contemporary quarter cloth and marbled boards. 8vo (210 x 140 mm), complete with half title pp viii,1084 and 7 plates. This is normally found as ex-library with stamps and often in later binding. Scarce in such good condition

Teubner Leipzig: Teubner. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION of Minkowski's explanation of the fourth dimension, a critical bridge between Einstein's theories of special and general relativity. PMM 401. "In "'Space and Time', read by Minkowski in Cologne only a few months before his death, he introduced the notion that made possible the expansion of the relativity theory of Einstein from its specific (1905) to its general form (1916). Minkowski's space-time hypothesis was in effect a restatement of Einstein's basic principle in a form that greatly enhanced its plausibility and also introduced important new developments. Hitherto natural phenomena had been thought to occur in a space of three dimensions and to flow uniformly through time. Minkowski maintained that the separation of time and space is a false conception; that time itself is a dimension, comparable to length, breadth, and height; and that therefore the true conception of reality was constituted by a space-time continuum possessing these four dimensions. This strongly reinforced Einstein's objections to absolute concepts and supported his view of the relativity of events in nature" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 401).In: Jahresbericht der deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung, volume XVIII, pp.75-88. Leipzig: Teubner, 1909. The whole volume offered. Contemporary three-quarter burgundy morocco. Provenance: Charles L. Bouton, 1912 (signature in pencil on an endpaper). Bookplate and deaccession stamp of Middlebury College- the Egbert Starr Library. Some scuffing to edges of binding and residue from library sticker at base of spine. A few neat annotations (not affecting Minkowski); text fine. NOTE: There were three 1909 (simultaneous or nearly simultaneous) journal printings of Raum und Zeit.         Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung und Lichtabsorption. WITH: Das Prinzip von der Erhaltung der Schwerpunktsbewgung und die Tragheit der Energie

Barth Leipzig: Barth. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of two important Einstein papers, including one of the two papers on his Noble Prize winning work on the photoelectric effect. On the Theory of Light Production and Light Absorption: A continuation and development of Einstein's revolutionary first paper in 1905 on the photoelectric effect ("On a Heuristic Point of View about the Creation and Conversion of Light")."In a companion paper [to "On a Heuristic Point..."], published in 1906, Einstein exposed appeal to the quantum as fundamentally counter to the ethos of classical physics: 'the theoretical bases on which Planck's radiation theory rests are different from those of Maxwell's theory'. Planck had not initially intended to quantify light-radiation itself, but Einstein demonstrated that his own 'light-quantum hypothesis' was implicit in Planck's earlier work. In viewing radiation not as a continuous wave, but as composed of small packets of energy (later called photons), Einstein was again shaking the foundations of classical physics" (Honner, The Description of Nature, 31). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Corpuscular-wave dualism for photons. Explanation of the photoelectric effect using the quantum hypothesis of Planck. Nobel prize to A. Einstein awarded in 1921 'for services to Theoretical Physics, and especially of he law of the photoelectric effect.'" Weil *12.The Principle of Conservation of Motion of the Center of Gravity and the Inertia of Energy: Einstein's further development of E=mc2. Einstein boldly uses his relationship to insist that the conservation of mass is a special case of the conservation of energy and broadens the law to include not only mechanical, but electromagnetic processes as well. Weil 13.IN: Annalen der Physik, Vol. 20, pp. 199-206; 627-633. Leipzig: Barth, 1906. Octavo, modern full green morocco. Rippling to the first few leaves of volume (not affecting Einstein papers). Inscribed by Bohr in Danish on front wrapper to Poul Heegaard, mathematician and professor at Copenhagen University. In original wrappers. In February 1905 the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters announced a prize concerning Lord Rayleigh's 1879 theory that the surface tension of liquids could be determined from the surface vibrations of liquid jets. The problem proposed by the Academy was to perform quantitative experiments to implement Rayleigh's method. Bohr faced formidable difficulties, not least the fact that, since the university had no physics laboratory, Bohr had to perform the experiments at night (to avoid perturbations due to passing traffic) in his father's physiology laboratory. Bohr's paper was submitted on the deadline of 30 October 1906, and on 23 February 1907 the Academy notified Bohr that he had won its gold medal. Bohr "included in his work essential improvements on Rayleigh's theory by taking into account the influence of the liquid's viscosity and of the ambient air, and by extending the earlier theory from infinitesimal to arbitrarily large amplitudes" (Pais 101).The original paper submitted to the Academy was, of course, written in Danish (it is actually in the hand of Niels's brother Harald). It survives in the Bohr Archives, but it was never published (Pais 102). Bohr submitted the present English translation to the Royal Society of London in 1908, where it was read and published the following year. As well as being his first published paper, this also represents the only experimental work published by Bohr; all of his subsequent contributions were to theoretical physics. (A. Pais, Niels Bohr's Times, 1991).The recipient, Poul Heegaard (1871-1948), is famous for his contributions to topology, especially the theory of three-dimensional manifolds. After his 1898 Copenhagen University dissertation, Heegaard taught at various military schools in the Copenhagen area before accepting a chair at Copenhagen University. After seven years there he resigned, but shortly afterwards he moved to the University of Kristiania (now Oslo) where he became a cofounder of the Norwegian Mathematical Society and a very popular teacher until he retired in 1941. Heegaard's dissertation is very well known because it gave a counter-example to the version of Poincaré-duality published by Poincaré shortly before, thereby contributing to the clarification of the basic notions of algebraic topology. He also co-wrote, with Max Dehn, the article 'Analysis Situs' for the Enzyklopadie der mathematischen Wissenschaften (1907), which marks the foundation of combinatorial topology.Offprint from: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Series A, Vol. 209. London: The Royal Society, 1909. Quarto, original green printed wrappers; custom box. A little soiling to wrappers, very small repairs to bottom corners of front wrapper. A remarkable well-preserved copy. RARE.

Nye Mennesker. Tegninger af Harald Moltke.

Gyldendal, 1905. 246 sider, illustreret i s/h. With dedication from Knud Rasmussen to Knud B (Knud Balle) signed November 11th. 1908. Knud Rasmussen thanks Knud B., (rural dean in Greenland and Knud Rasmussens cousin), for helping him economically in the beginning of Rasmussen´s career. Knud Rasmussen has finally been able to repay his cousin the money he "invested" in him which enabled Knud Rasmussen to begin his excursions. The dedication is a little vague about what money and which "beginning" Knud Rasmussen is referring to. Knud Rasmussen began his expeditions to Greenland in 1902, when joining the excursion "Den litterære Grønlandsekspedition" 1902-04 supervised by Mylius-Erichsen. Here the thought of a trade-market in Kap York (around Thule) was born. The danish government had agreed in investing money in the project, but later withdraw their financial offer. Instead Knud Rasmussen had to raise the money from charity. The two private ecclesiastical organisations; "Udvalget for den Grønlandske Kirkesag" og "Dansk Missionsselskab" raised most of them. Considering the dedication, Knud Balle presumably "invested" in Knud Rasmussen when he left for this first expedition to Greenland in 1902

The Story of the Champions of the Round Table (Signed)

New York: Charles Scribner&#39;s Sons, 1905. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Very good. Yes. 8vo. xviii, (329),(i)pp. Written and Illustrated by Howard Pyle. Original yellow-brown cloth blocked in red, black and gilt. Cloth soiled and lightly worn at edges, rear inner hinge neatly mended, else a very good copy. Very sincerely yours, Howard Pyle." The addressee was Henry Mills Alden, editor of first Harper&#39;s Weekly then of Harper&#39;s Monthly, to which Pyle was a contributor. Based on the date of the letter, it is possible that the manuscript in question was "Youma" by Lafcadio Hearn (published January and February 1890 in Harper&#39;s Monthly).

Unbewußte Gemeinheiten. Unbeswusste Gemeinheiten. Ein Vortrag

München: Verlag Ernst Reinhardt, 1905 RARE early 1st Edn. BLEULER father of SCHIZOPHRENIA. EUGEN BLEULER Unbeswusste Gemeinheiten. 8vo., 40pp. [22.8 x 14.8cms] Original printed stiff light brown wrappers. FIRST EDITION of one of Bleuler&#39;s rare published papers. Paul Eugen Bleuler (April 30, 1857 - July 15, 1939) was a Swiss psychiatrist most notable for his contributions to the understanding of mental illness and coining the term schizophrenia. Bleuler was born in Zollikon, a small town near Zurich in Switzerland, to Johann Rudolf Bleuler, a wealthy farmer, & Pauline Bleuler-Bleuler. He studied medicine in Zurich, and later studied in Paris, London and Munich after which he returned to Zurich to take a post as an intern at the Burghölzli, a university hospital. In 1886 Bleuler became the director of a psychiatric clinic at Rheinau, a hospital located in an old monastery on an island in the Rhine. Rheinau was noted at the time for being backward, and Bleuler set about improving conditions for the patients resident there. Bleuler returned to the Burghölzli in 1898 to be appointed director, where notably he employed Carl Jung as an intern. Bleuler is particularly notable for naming schizophrenia, a disorder which was previously known as dementia praecox. Bleuler realized the condition was neither a dementia, nor did it always occur in young people (praecox meaning early) and so gave the condition the purportedly less stigmatising but still controversial name from the Greek roots schizein ("to split") and phr?n, phren- ("mind"). Bleuler treated celebrated Russian ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky after his breakdown in 1919. Bleuler coined the New Latin word autismus (English translation autism) in 1910 as he was defining symptoms of schizophrenia, deriving it from the Greek word autos (meaning self). According to the Critical Dictionary of Psychoanalysis by Charles Rycroft, it was Bleuler who introduced the term ambivalence (in 1911). An excellent near fine example, upper cover with a gentle fold neatly straightened.. 1st Edition.

        THE FLOWER BOOK Signed

London: Henri Piazza et Cie. for the Fine Art Society, 1905 Landmark Pre-Raphaelite Masterpiece Of The Book Arts. First edition in the ORIGINAL unbound state. One of a very small limitation of Three Hundred Numbered in Longhand Copies [by Georgiana Burne-Jones]. Publisher&#39;s leather & cloth clamshell case. Folio (13 X 17 1/2 inches). This production consists of the famous thirty eight original water-colour designs by Burne-Jones brilliantly reproduced by the publisher. The plates are housed in the original publisher&#39;s gilt-lettered clamshell case 1/4 dark green Morocco with matching cloth refreshed by expert modest repair. As originally intended by the publisher, the introductory quarto gilt-lettered booklet bound in green cloth is present as a separate publication with the title-page, half-title, text and index printed in red & green, except for the four-page document "Facsimile of Part of the Lists of Flowers Made by Sir Edward Burne-Jones" at the back, printed in black as required. Of the 38 original loose colour plates mounted separately with facing text in their original window mattes, 35 are present with three missing plates masterfully crafted & supplied in facsimile by an expert paper conservationist matching paper stock quality, matting, colour quality & the original hand-lettered typography - no expense was spared to faithfully complete & perfect this famous presentation. Very few copies of this important example of "fin de siècle livre d&#39;artiste" have survived in any condition at all. If any surface, they are usually bound-up as a book in the traditional fashion. Copies with the plates loose as issued are very rare [perhaps fewer than 20 copies]. "The pictures in this book are not of flowers themselves, but of subjects suggested by their names. The first meaning of many of these has long been forgotten, and new meanings are here found for them in the imagination of the artist". He began the series for his own pleasure in 1882, as rest from more laborious work, keeping by him a list of beautiful names that he had met with & choosing subjects amongst them from time to time according to his mood. All the pictures take the same form, a circle about six inches in diameter kind of magic mirror in which the vision appears and he wished them not to be separated, because, wide as is their scope, one spirit, that of pure fantasy, unites them. Many of the paintings draw on Arthurian and classical legend, and on the Bible, and some are re-workings of favourite themes, for example `Wake, Dearest!&#39; depicts `The Sleeping Beauty&#39;, a story he turned to again and again in his several `Briar Rose&#39; series. These freely worked little pictures, some of them unfinished, were done purely for the artist&#39;s own pleasure and it may be for this reason that they possibly contain `a fuller expression of himself than exists elsewhere in his work&#39;. Georgiana Burne-Jones - From the Preface.. Signed. 1st Edition. Illus. by Burne-Jones, Sir Edward.
