Inscribed and Signed by Henri Menier on Portrait to Captain Newton. Rare there being only a few similar albums with different photos and qualities. Aquired from the Newton Family. In December 1895, Henri Menier, a rich French chocolate manufacturer, brought Anticosti island for $125,000.00, based on the recommendations of his life-long friend George-Martin Zede, with the intention of developing a model settlement and a fishing and hunting paradise that he could visit with his friends. Martin Zede who was named Director- General of the Island (1895-1926), spent considerable financial resources under the directions of Menier, until Menier's death in 1913. Henri Menier initially developed the village of English Bay which he renamed Bay-Holy-Claire in honour of his mother. Then, a few years later, ordered its installations to be moved to Ellis Bay, creating a new village that became Port-Menier where he built a sumptuous villa for his infrequent visits, at the cost of $130,000.00. Martin Zede developed the lumber, agriculture annd fishing bringing a certain amount of prosperity for the islands' inhabitants. The most extravagant was the introductiong of several animal species of which the stag of Virginia constitutes one of the principal richness of the island today. With the death of Henri Menier, in 1913, his brother Gaston continued, in a less intensive way, the development of the island including the construction of several fishing and hunting lodges and the development of tourism related to these activities. Gaston Menier (1855-1934), was an active member of the Quebec Yacht Club 1905-13 and proprietor of the yacht Bacchante. In 1926, Gaston would resell the island to 'Wayagamack Pulp and Paper' for approximately $6,000,000.00..

Autograph Letter, Signed, from Charles Ricketts to Laurence Hodson

(London: N.p., 1905). (2)pp. letter, together with the original envelope postmarked February 12, 1905. In this letter from Vale Press founder, illustrator, and designer Charles Ricketts to the private press collector and patron Laurence Hodson, Ricketts discusses art, a passion that the two men shared. Ricketts mentions a bust that Hodson purchased and that Ricketts was having mounted for him by W. Talbot Ready, a specialist in antiquities, adding, "I rather dread going to his place as it usually leads to my buying something exquisite; when I took your bust there I returned with a small Greek marble head." Ricketts also discusses an article that he wrote about the re-Raphaelite painter George Frederic Watts for The Burlington Magazine: "It has caused some offence in the New art quarters, if I had followed up with the Impressionists & with Whistler as I was asked to do, I should have to leave for Italy at once." He continues on with his opinion on the Impressionists: "Don't miss the impressionists, some 5 of the Degas are delightful most of the other things beastly, though many of them entertaining; the movement has been a curious side issue in modern painting Watts being a better impressionist & landscapist than Monet for instance who does interestig spaces of raw paint, on a mechanical scheme, inside monotonous shapes, with a wonderful gift for missing all affect at illision other than of a flat painted surface." In closing, Ricketts mentions that he and his partner Charles Shannon are soon embarking on a trip to Italy, and quips, "Anatole France had to be carried doen from the scaffoldage in the Sistina I hope the same thing won't happen to me!" Letter is creased from being folded to fit into the envelope, else fine.

Unbewußte Gemeinheiten. Unbeswusste Gemeinheiten. Ein Vortrag

München: Verlag Ernst Reinhardt, 1905 RARE early 1st Edn. BLEULER father of SCHIZOPHRENIA. EUGEN BLEULER Unbeswusste Gemeinheiten. 8vo., 40pp. [22.8 x 14.8cms] Original printed stiff light brown wrappers. FIRST EDITION of one of Bleuler's rare published papers. Paul Eugen Bleuler (April 30, 1857 - July 15, 1939) was a Swiss psychiatrist most notable for his contributions to the understanding of mental illness and coining the term schizophrenia. Bleuler was born in Zollikon, a small town near Zurich in Switzerland, to Johann Rudolf Bleuler, a wealthy farmer, & Pauline Bleuler-Bleuler. He studied medicine in Zurich, and later studied in Paris, London and Munich after which he returned to Zurich to take a post as an intern at the Burghölzli, a university hospital. In 1886 Bleuler became the director of a psychiatric clinic at Rheinau, a hospital located in an old monastery on an island in the Rhine. Rheinau was noted at the time for being backward, and Bleuler set about improving conditions for the patients resident there. Bleuler returned to the Burghölzli in 1898 to be appointed director, where notably he employed Carl Jung as an intern. Bleuler is particularly notable for naming schizophrenia, a disorder which was previously known as dementia praecox. Bleuler realized the condition was neither a dementia, nor did it always occur in young people (praecox meaning early) and so gave the condition the purportedly less stigmatising but still controversial name from the Greek roots schizein ("to split") and phr?n, phren- ("mind"). Bleuler treated celebrated Russian ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky after his breakdown in 1919. Bleuler coined the New Latin word autismus (English translation autism) in 1910 as he was defining symptoms of schizophrenia, deriving it from the Greek word autos (meaning self). According to the Critical Dictionary of Psychoanalysis by Charles Rycroft, it was Bleuler who introduced the term ambivalence (in 1911). An excellent near fine example, upper cover with a gentle fold neatly straightened.. 1st Edition.

A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way

Washington DC: Carnegie Institution. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, one of only 700 copies, of Barnard's magnificent star atlas, containing the first photographs to show the structure of the Milky Way. Complete with 51 mounted silver prints (as issued) and 50 charts and tables. RARE. "The greatest photographic legacy of Barnard was his magnum opus: A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way… To capture the Milky Way in all its glory, Edward Barnard used the Bruce photographic telescope of the Yerkes Observatory, Chicago. Finance for the telescope had been given to the University of Chicago by Miss Catherine W. Bruce. The Bruce telescope actually consisted of three individual tubes bound rigidly on the same mounting: two photographic telescopes of 10-inch and 6 1/4-inch aperture, and a 5-inch aperture visual telescope used for tracking (guiding) of the stars as the Earth rotates. The great importance of the photographic telescopes lay in their wide-field coverage; the 10-inch had a 50-inch focal length and, to quote Barnard, gave 'exquisite definition' over a field of about 7 degrees (or 14 full moons). The plate-holder for the 10-inch carried glass negative 12 inches square, while that for the 6 1/4-inch carried glass plates measuring 8 x 10 inches. "The scale of the photographs secured with the 10-inch was exceptionally well adapted to revealing the structure of the Milky Way; every inch covered just over one degree of sky. George Ellery Hale, director of the Mount Wilson Solar Observatory owned by the Carnegie Institute of Washington, invited Barnard to Mount Wilson in 1905. A generous grant from Mr. J.D. Hooker of Los Angeles allowed Barnard to transport the Bruce telescope to the Mount Wilson site. Barnard secured forty of his fifty photographs for his Atlas, from one of the world's premier observing sites, in a period spanning February to September, 1905… "The Atlas was completed by Edwin Frost, Director of the Yerkes Observatory in Chicago, and by Barnard's niece, Mary Calvert. Barnard had, however, personally examined 35 700 photographic prints to select only the best to feature in his Atlas, of which seven hundred were produced. The two volume Barnard Atlas is today an exceedingly rare jewel…" (Block and Freeman, Shrouds of the Night). Provenance: With presentation inscription in each volume, "To my friend Gust. Soderberg / With Compliments of John C. Deagan / Chicago December 16 1929 / [signed] John C. Deagan". John Calhoun Deagan (1851-1934), the founder of the J.C. Deagan Company, was, in addition to being an amateur astronomer, a noted musician and manufacturer who became a pioneer in developing scientific tuning mechanisms. Washington DC: Carnegie Institution, 1927. Oblong quarto (Vol 1: 11x11x1.25 inches; Vol 2: 11x10 x1.75 inches), original cloth; housed in custom box. Two volumes. With portrait frontispiece, plate of the Bruce Photographic Telescope, 51 mounted silver prints, 50 charts and tables. A few scratches and stray marks of soiling to cloth; a little rubbing to extremities. Offsetting from portrait (as always, even with the tissue guard). An outstanding copy of a book usually found ex-libris and in terrible condition.

One spine just barely darker than the others, a couple of mild corner bumps, otherwise A BEAUTIFULLY BOUND SET IN SPLENDID CONDITION. Swinburne (1837-1909) was a virtuoso of verse, able to produce dazzling and enthralling lines in a wide range of meters and stanzaic forms. He was also a shocking pagan in terms of the content of his poetry, a significant portion of which was erotic. Though he was dismissed from Oxford for disciplinary reasons, he formed important friendships there with Ruskin, Tennyson, Morris, Rossetti, and Burne-Jones. In addition to verse, Swinburne penned enough tragedies to fill these five volumes, perhaps the best of which is "Chastelard," in which the title character falls desperately in love with Mary Queen of Scots, follows her to Scotland, is discovered in her room, and is executed. Swinburne's fascination with the tragic queen continues in the plays "Mary Stuart" and "Bothwell." Other dramas in the present set include his first published works, "The Queen-Mother" and "Rosamond," and the shorter tragedies "Locrine," "The Sisters," and "Mario Faliero." Our remarkably appealing bindings are typical of the classically designed, well-executed, and generally undervalued work produced under the Bumpus name for a substantial period, beginning in the latter part of the 19th century. Packer says that the Bumpus bindings emanated from the bookselling firm of John and Edward Bumpus, which was founded in 1780, and the Bumpus name still held an honored place among London binderies well into the 20th century.

[Miniature] The Compleat Angler, or the Contemplative Man's Recreation, being a discourse of rivers, fish-ponds, fish and fishing

London: Henry Frowde, (c. 1905). (xx), (586)pp. From "The Fifth Edition, much corrected and enlarged." Printed on India paper at the Oxford University Press, with a frontispiece portrait and half-tone title. This copy is from the miniature library of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and bears his initials, as well as those of Eleanor Roosevelt, on the verso of the front endpaper. This copy was sold at the first auction of the Roosevelt miniatures in 1951, which took place at the Hammer Galleries in New York. Accompanying the book is a magazine clipping announcing the sale, and the lot ticket and estimate. From this sale, the book was bequeathed to the purchaser's son, who, in turn, gave it to its most recent owner -- an angling enthusiast. Spine and corner tips show some drying, frontispiece detached and laid in place, else a near fine copy. A.e.g. (Spielmann 504; Bondy p. 117; Welsh 7030; See Bromer/Edison, p. 156).         [In Japanese]. Setsu Kushi Hinagata [Patterns of Miniature Combs]

[1905]. The Art of Japanese Hair CombsA Singular Scrapbook[DECORATIVE ARTS]. [In Japanese]. Setsu Kushi Hinagata [Patterns of Miniature Combs]. [Tokyo: Japan Art Society, 37th Year of the Meiji (1905)]. Octavo (9 1/2 x 5 3/4 in; 242 x 140 mm). 154 pp. A unique scrapbook of over 500 charcoal rubbings on rice paper of Japanese miniature comb and hairpin (koagi) patterns tipped-in to the pages of three issues of Japanese Art Society Reports bound together. The original collector has crossed-out the original titles, publisher, etc., and provided their own manuscript title in black marking pen. Each page has two rubbed patterns, each pattern with upper and lower views of each comb, and the rubbings are remarkably sharp with even small details very clear.Publisher's original string-bound wrappers with losses but the integrity of interior of the book remains complete and intact. Early auction clipping for this item ("Kushi Hinagata") mounted to the inside of the rear (Japanese front) cover. Housed in a green silk drop-back box with traditional Japanese clasps with paper label on spine, lettered in Japanese. The art of Japanese hair decoration, or kushi, dates back hundreds of years and has rich and varied heritage. As with much Eastern art it served to "beautify items of everyday use, to make the commonplace extraordinary [and] to tell of the life and status of the wearers, who were geisha, courtesans, court ladies, and housewives" (Ziesnitz and Momoko, Combs and Hairpins, Daruma: Japanese Art and Antique Magazine, Summer 2002). And, indeed, this work is a testament to the beautiful and elegant diversity of this Japanese decorative art. A curious, attractive and visually arresting book, one with certain aesthetic merit, given the obsessive care and attention necessary to compile such a volume which, with its use of a marking pen, dates this compilation to sometime post-1952, the year that marking pens were introduced. A valuable historical, cultural, and artistic record as well as an object that, as much as its subject, renders the commonplace extraordinary, and takes its place along side of Hokusai's classic Imayo Kushi Hinagata (1823) as a key reference."Women have always adorned themselves but perhaps none so subtly as the Japanese. You can reproduce the old hairstyles seen in painting and sculpture but their hair ornaments remind us of the coiffures on which they were worn. In other words, hair ornaments are tangible souvenirs of ancient hairstyles."Hair ornaments were not mere accessories to feminine coiffure and attire. In keeping with the Japanese urge to beautify items of everyday use, to make the commonplace extraordinary, they were turned into artistic objects mirroring cultural and and social history. They tell of the life and status of their wearers, who were geisha, courtesans, court ladies, and housewives."They give a glimpse of the exceptional beauty of Japanese art..." (Ziesnitz, Sharon. Combs and Hairpins. Daruma 35, vol. 9, No. 3, Summer 2002).

        The Man of Sorrows

East Aurora, NY: Roycrofters, 1905. Octavo. (iv), 111pp. One of 100 copies on Imperial Japon, signed by Hubbard. The title page is hand-decorated with a thistle design, and the colophon device and opening initials are hand-colored. An account of the life of Christ written by the enterprising founder of the Roycrofters, Elbert Hubbard himself, in a lovely binding, probably by Louis H. Kinder. Kinder became responsible for the training and supervision of other bookbinders, and, by 1900, the Roycrofters were offering deluxe, hand-tooled editions of their books. Bound in full blue levant with an elegant, Art Nouveau-style motif on the front cover framing the title, featuring flowers created with tan morocco onlays and gilt-tooled leaves. The spine is gilt-titled and decorated with a foliate design. Wide morocco turn-ins have gilt-tooled flowers slightly larger than those on the front cover and leaves in each corner, framing marbled endpapers. In a felt-lined box with the title printed on the spine. Box shows some soiling and wear, else very fine.

Hakluytus Pothumus or PURCHASE HIS PILGRIMES Contayning a History of the World in Sea Voyages and Land Travells

Glasgow: James Maclehose and Sons. Complete 20 volume set uniformly bound in original blue cloth. 1905 to 1907. 1st edition. hb. 8vo, Printed in a limited edition of 1,000. . Purchase, whose date of birth is uncertain, but was probably around 1577, was born at Thaxted, in Essex, England. He was educated at Cambridge, and in 1604 was appointed to the Vicarage of Eastwood near Leigh on the Thames. It was from the "lusty seamen" of this coastal town that he began to gather his tales of exploration and nautical adventure, a vocation he was to pursue (at no little cost to himself, or his family) until the end of his life. He continued to garner material from all sources, including the papers of Hakluyt (who died in 1616). His first volume appeared in 1613, and subsequent volumes appeared until 1625, often being reprinted and reissued with new volumes. Purchase died in 1626. The text of this edition is an exact reprint of the 1625 edition, with the exception that a more comprehensive index has been supplied. It may be understood that all volumes in this set show wear and bumping, with light to heavy soiling to the boards. The latter volumes, in particular, are troubled by superficial exposure to moisture, as the boards are water spotted, and some pages are quite foxed. There is, however, no odor, or evidence other than cosmetic of a deleterious affect. All volumes are complete, and all maps are present. All volumes may safely be handled and read. A good set, which, if it were prettier, which fetch a much more substantial price. .

The text in verse tells about the daily doings of a family of humanized bunnies that are portrayed in great detail with humor and affection. Aside from the text drawings and interesting publishing notations, there are 14 fabulous full page finished waterecolors that if sold separately would amount to much more than the price of the entire manuscript. Original work by the Parkers is ultra rare and this is a wonderful opportunity to own the complete work for a picture book by them.
