        Coming Men on Coming Questions

This extremely rare 1905 publication contains a 17-page piece by Churchill on Free Trade preceded by a 3-page biographic sketch and a striking, full-page, half-tone portrait of Churchill.  Churchill's piece was - intentionally - the first of 26, each a "brief character sketch of a coming man, with his latest portrait, and a statement of his views upon a leading question of the day".  Each of the 26 parts had been published earlier in the year as individual pamphlets before being collectively published in late 1905 in this single volume "issued in view of the coming General Election".   The Editor, William T. Stead, had published Churchill's pamphlet first and likewise put him as "Coming Man, No. 1" in this volume publication.  Stead ranked Churchill as "the first of our coming men" stating that "If he chooses to take it, a seat in the next Cabinet is at his disposal." Stead said of Churchill "he has got ten years' start on all his competitors" and that "Winston's past has been variegated.  His present is exciting."  This publication is not only quite rare, but is also a remarkable portrait of the great man on the cusp of his greatness.  The editor's 3-page opening biographical sketch of the up and coming Churchill is a fascinating piece of history in and of itself.  At this point, Churchill was a promising young leader, but he had yet to experience either the trying failures or supreme triumphs that cemented his place in history.  In the 1906 election Churchill stood as a Liberal, having left the Conservative Party of his father.  Free trade was a major issue upon which Churchill campaigned and a significant issue on which he parted from his former Party.  This volume is perishably bound in thin quarter tan cloth over gray paper covered cardboard covers with a pasted paper spine label.   It measures 9 x 6.25 inches and is 476 pages.  Given the extreme scarcity of the publication and the fragile nature of the binding, this copy is in quite respectable condition.  The binding remains square and tight.  The gray card covers are worn at the edges and corners, but still fully intact.  The spine cloth is worn at the ends and splitting along the rear hinge, but the binding integrity is not affected.  The original paper spine label is still fully intact with no losses , though it appears as if the "C" in "Coming" may have once been carefully traced over with black ink.  The contents are clean, bright, and tight.  A trace only of spotting is confined to the ffep.  There is a decorative previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown.  There is also some numerical notation in pencil to the Elections tables at pages 297 and 302 and a correction of a constituency designation "North" crossed out and replaced with "South" in page 303.  We also find some light pencil underlining in the bibliographic sketch of Campbell-Bannerman at pages 81-82.  The pencil notations give the impression of being contemporary to the publication.  A very early and quite rare publication in the Churchill canon.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen B3, Woods B2

Why I Am A Free Trader, extremely rare 1905 speech pamphlet

This rare and striking pamphlet is from very early in Churchill's career. Few copies are known to survive. Please note that this an original unbound pamphlet, not the bound version issued in late 1905 by Review of Reviews and titled "Coming Men on Coming Questions" (Bibliographic reference: Cohen B3, Woods B2). The pamphlet is a remarkable portrait of the great man on the cusp of his greatness, published in 1905 at the height of Churchill's vigor as a young radical and in advance of the 1906 General Election. The pamphlet contains a 17-page piece by Churchill on Free Trade preceded by a 3-page biographic sketch and a striking, full-page, half-tone portrait of Churchill. Churchill's piece was - intentionally - the first of 26, each a "brief character sketch of a coming man, with his latest portrait, and a statement of his views upon a leading question of the day". The 26 pamphlets were published weekly in 1905 before being issued collectively in a single volume late in the year. The single volume is rare, but this individual pamphlet publication is especially so. The Editor, William T. Stead, chose to publish Churchill's pamphlet first and designated him as "Coming Man, No. 1. The editor's 3-page opening biographical sketch of the up and coming Churchill is a fascinating piece of history in and of itself. In choosing Churchill as "the first of our coming men" Stead stated that "If he chooses to take it, a seat in the next Cabinet is at his disposal." Stead said of Churchill "he has got ten years' start on all his competitors" and that "Winston's past has been variegated. His present is exciting." At the time, Churchill was a promising young leader, but he had yet to experience either the trying failures or supreme triumphs that cemented his place in history. In the 1906 election Churchill stood as a Liberal, having left the Conservative Party of his father. Free trade was a major issue upon which Churchill campaigned and a significant issue on which he parted from his former Party. The pamphlet is bound in wire stitched paper wrappers and measures 9.5 x 6 inches. It is 24 pages in length with the final 2 pages being advertisements. The front cover bears a striking half-tone portrait of Churchill. This is an excellent example given the age and extreme scarcity. The pamphlet is entirely complete with no spotting. The single sheet cover (front and rear) is now detached due to rusting of the binding staples, but is otherwise quite well preserved. There is light exterior soiling and a faint vertical crease where the pamphlet was once neatly folded, but there are no losses and no notable wear. Remarkably, even the fragile paper wrap corners remain sharp. The contents are bright and free of spotting. Though certainly not fine, this pamphlet is quite well preserved given the age, perishable binding, and great scarcity. A beautiful copy of a truly rare item. The pamphlet is protected in a removable, archival quality mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A15, Woods A7/1.

        THE FLOWER BOOK Signed

London: Henri Piazza et Cie. for the Fine Art Society, 1905 Landmark Pre-Raphaelite Masterpiece Of The Book Arts. First edition in the ORIGINAL unbound state. One of a very small limitation of Three Hundred Numbered in Longhand Copies [by Georgiana Burne-Jones]. Publisher&#39;s leather & cloth clamshell case. Folio (13 X 17 1/2 inches). This production consists of the famous thirty eight original water-colour designs by Burne-Jones brilliantly reproduced by the publisher. The plates are housed in the original publisher&#39;s gilt-lettered clamshell case 1/4 dark green Morocco with matching cloth refreshed by expert modest repair. As originally intended by the publisher, the introductory quarto gilt-lettered booklet bound in green cloth is present as a separate publication with the title-page, half-title, text and index printed in red & green, except for the four-page document "Facsimile of Part of the Lists of Flowers Made by Sir Edward Burne-Jones" at the back, printed in black as required. Of the 38 original loose colour plates mounted separately with facing text in their original window mattes, 35 are present with three missing plates masterfully crafted & supplied in facsimile by an expert paper conservationist matching paper stock quality, matting, colour quality & the original hand-lettered typography - no expense was spared to faithfully complete & perfect this famous presentation. Very few copies of this important example of "fin de siècle livre d&#39;artiste" have survived in any condition at all. If any surface, they are usually bound-up as a book in the traditional fashion. Copies with the plates loose as issued are very rare [perhaps fewer than 20 copies]. "The pictures in this book are not of flowers themselves, but of subjects suggested by their names. The first meaning of many of these has long been forgotten, and new meanings are here found for them in the imagination of the artist". He began the series for his own pleasure in 1882, as rest from more laborious work, keeping by him a list of beautiful names that he had met with & choosing subjects amongst them from time to time according to his mood. All the pictures take the same form, a circle about six inches in diameter kind of magic mirror in which the vision appears and he wished them not to be separated, because, wide as is their scope, one spirit, that of pure fantasy, unites them. Many of the paintings draw on Arthurian and classical legend, and on the Bible, and some are re-workings of favourite themes, for example `Wake, Dearest!&#39; depicts `The Sleeping Beauty&#39;, a story he turned to again and again in his several `Briar Rose&#39; series. These freely worked little pictures, some of them unfinished, were done purely for the artist&#39;s own pleasure and it may be for this reason that they possibly contain `a fuller expression of himself than exists elsewhere in his work&#39;. Georgiana Burne-Jones - From the Preface.. Signed. 1st Edition. Illus. by Burne-Jones, Sir Edward.

New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., Inc., 1905. . First printing. . Very good condition in red cloth with gold lettering on the front cover and spine: a gift inscription on the front endpaper, lower corners slightly bumped and some slight spine slant - but overall a very attractive copy, with little soiling to the covers, bright lettering, and clean, flexible pages. . The very uncommon first issue with Chesnutt&#39;s name misspelled on both the front cover and the spine; this error was caught by Chesnutt when a sample was sent to him at the beginning of July, and he was assured by the publisher on July 5th that &#39;not a great number&#39; had been bound thus. This novel, the last to be published during his lifetime (and published just 6 years after his first book) was a commercial failure. 294 pages.

Reconnaissance and Scouting appeared in 1884. Aids to Scouting, for N-COs and men in 1899 and Scouting for Boys in 1908. Powell, Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-, first Baron Baden-Powell (1857&ndash;1941), army officer and founder of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, who in February 1897, on his promotion to lieutenant-colonel, Baden-Powell took command of the 5th dragoon guards. On arrival in India he reduced regimental drill and ceremonial, gave attention to reconnaissance and training (ideas later incorporated into his Aids to Scouting, 1899), and was unusual in taking a close personal interest in the welfare of his men. He built them a soda water factory and a temperance club, warned them against venereal disease, and tried unsuccessfully to dissuade them from visiting the local brothel. He also continued his amateur dramatics and practical jokes. See ODNB.

THIOGENE COLOURS... ACCORDING TO THE STATE OF THE INDUSTRY IN 1904

1905. (TEXTILES - DYEING). THE THIOGENE COLOURS OF FARBWERKE VORM. MEISTER LUCIUS & BRUNING, HOECHST ON MAIN. ACCORDING TO THE STATE OF THE INDUSTRY IN 1904. New York: H. A. Metz & Co., (1905). Frontispiece of the factory complex in Germany, line illustrations of manufacturing apparatus in the text, and hundreds of swatches of dyed cloths, large and small, in a wide spectrum of colors and patterns. vi,162 pp. Text is in English. 4to., light green cloth sides, gilt title to upper board, publisher's information to lower board, patterned endpapers. Although the backstrip is lacking, the boards are firmly attached. Most leaves have some light dust-soiling at margins and the boards are bowed because the number of mounted samples keeps the individual leaves and the entire volume from closing tightly. A trade catalogue of Thiogene Colors, a subset of the Sulpher Color group, which allowed the direct dyeing of dyestuffs in a greater variety of colors, excepting red, than was formerly possible. The work is divided into two parts; one part deals with the application of Thiogene Colors, and the other describes in detail the various modes of application and the properties of individual colors in the series.

Ist die Trägheit eines Körpers von seinem Energieinhalt abhängig?Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1905. First edition.

A very fine and completely unsophisticated copy, without stamps or any other markings in strictly contemporary cloth binding, Einstein's groundbreaking 1905 paper, the introduction and derivation of the most famous equation in modern physics: <i>E=mc2</i>. "A few months after first publishing the theory of relativity, Einstein discovered something that particularly intrigued him; the relation between inertial mass and energy. He wrote to Conrad Habicht during the summer of 1905: 'One more consequence of the paper on electrodynamics has also occurred to me. The principle of relativity, in conjunction with Maxwell's equations, requires that mass be a direct measure of the energy contained in a body; light carries mass with it. A noticeable decrease of mass should occur in the case of radium. The argument is amusing and seductive, but for all I know the Lord might be laughing over it and leading me around by the nose'." (Stachel, Einstein's Miraculous Year). Einstein continued to work late into the summer on this "amusing and seductive" problem before proving the mass-energy relationship that would become known throughout the world as the simple and elegant <i>E=mc2</i>. Received by Annalen der Physik on September 27, Einstein's derivation and proof of his most famous equation was a dramatic contribution to his 'annus mirabilis' of 1905. Weil *10.. In: Annalen der Physik, 4th series, vol. 18, pp. 639-641. The complete volume offered here in contemporary quarter cloth and marbled boards. 8vo (210 x 140 mm), complete with half title pp viii,1084 and 7 plates.
