        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Prag, 17. III. [1905].. 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.. In Erwartung baldiger Rückäußerung / hochachtend / Max Brod".

XINING, CHINA: Original Signed (Illegibly) Ink Drawing Titled in Pencil:] Haupttor von Si-Ning-Fu [Main Gate of Xining].

1905 - Ca. 1905. Ink drawing on thick paper ca. 16x26 cm (6 ½ x 10 ½ in). Recently matted, with a minor tear of blank margin, but overall in very good condition. This well executed ink drawing shows the main gate at Xining, China. "Xining has a history of over 2,100 years and was a chief commercial hub on the Hexi Corridor caravan route to Tibet, handling especially timber, wool and salt in ancient times. The trade along the Hexi Corridor was part of a larger trade corridor along the Northern Silk Road, whose use was intensified in the 1st century BC after efforts by the Han dynasty to control this route" (Wikipedia). This ink drawing was created by an artist under Filchner's direction after a photograph made by Filchner enroute to Tibet on his 1903-5 "expedition to Tibet to carry out geomagnetic and topographical surveys on the high plateau. In addition to its scientific work the expedition carried out a significant intelligence-gathering role and was contemporaneous with similar missions by Francis Younghusband and others" (Howgego, 1850-1940 Polar Regions etc., F6).

        William Caxton

Chicago: privately printed for the Caxton Club, 1905. Limited edition.. A bright and clean copy in near fine condition.. Pp. 118; 25 full page plates, all with tissue guards. Publisher's original one-quarter red cloth over dark gray paper-covered boards, spine with printed paper label, top page edge rough-trimmed, the other edges are untrimmed, lg 4to (12 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches, 305 x 240 mm). Presents the life and works of William Caxton, the first Englishman to work as a printer and the first to introduce a printing press into England, which he did in 1476. Caxton was also the first English retailer of printed books; the first book he printed was Chaucer's 'The Canterbury Tales.' As preface to the volume states: "A life of Caxton must of necessity be little more than an account of his work. As in the case of the great inventor Guttenberg, only a few documents are connected with his name." The volume is divided into seven chapters, beginning with 'Caxton's Early Life' and ending with 'Caxton's Death.' The remaining chapters present all of Caxton's printed works in detail. The edition was limited to 252 copies printed on American hand-made paper of which 240 copies were offered for sale; after printing the type was distributed. The colophon shows it was privately printed for the Caxton Club by R. R. Donnelley at the Lakeside Press in Chicago. This is a special association copy - at the beginning of the volume the following announcement is tipped in: "This copy was presented to R. Hunter Middleton on the occasion of the April 24, 1968 meeting of the Caxton Club with the appreciation of the members and guests whose signatures appear below. The announcement is signed by 74 members and guests of the Caxton Club. R. Hunter Middleton was the owner of the Cherryburn Press that published many limited editions, many with the woodblock prints of Thomas Bewick.

Wilhelm, and he writes in the introductory ANNOUNCEMENT: "With this number the editorial management of THE COAST passes into new hands. The young ladies who planned and established THE COAST deserve praise for the perseverance and pluck with which they met adverse and discouraging conditions and published a magazine which, considering the support they received, was a credit to the City of Seattle and the Northwest. There seems to be a field for distinctive Seattle and Northwestern literature. People are constantly writing for reliable and trustworthy information of this country. Tales of the West and its triumphant progress are sought. Northwestern ideas and thought need a chronicle, impartial and true..." The magazine provides much valuable documentation of places, life and literature in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s, and this handsome run, complete with covers and advertisements makes for fascinating reading. While the vast majority of the content relates to Washington State, there is the occasional article on British Columbia and Oregon. .

        Uranisme et Unisexualité

Paris: Maloine(1905) 363pp - Paris: Maloine(1905) 363pp. Raffalovich's landmark study of homosexuality which created a furor in the medical establishment when it appeared. Raffalovich wrote the book to condemn what he considered the "fatuous" French medical opinion about sexual inversion, which concluded that male "inverts" were effeminate degenerates. The idea was so preposterous to Raffalovich that he coined a new term, "unisexuality," for sexual attraction between men. An early edition of a very important treatise on homosexuality, the first edition of which appeared in 1896. Very good in original wrappers, light foxing to covers and occasional spotting, small signature on cover. The Maloine publisher's name has been pasted over on title page, as in most copies.       1905 - Ca. 1905. Seven ink drawings on thick paper ca. 27x23 cm (11x9 in) and slightly smaller. The original ink drawings are recently matted together with the corresponding printed text illustration leaves from the book. Housed in a custom made black cloth portfolio with a printed paper title page label and silk ties. One drawing with an expertly repaired corner chip, but overall the ink drawings are in very good condition. This historically important collection of ink drawings show 1. A Tibetan Rosary (p.47); 2. Lama d Ge ss Long with yellow hat and cloak etc. (p.48); 3. A travelling lama (p.63); 4. Illustration of an Indian legend (p.85); 5. A prayer drum partially made with human skull parts (p. 103); 6. A water-powered prayer wheel (p.104); 7. Tibetan cairn with prayer flags on mountain top (p.128). The illustrations are supplemented with the matted title page and map of the monastery from the book. The preface states that the ink drawings were created by an artist under Filchner's direction based on photographs made by Filchner. The purpose of Filchner's 1903-5 "expedition to Tibet [was] to carry out geomagnetic and topographical surveys on the high plateau. In addition to its scientific work the expedition carried out a significant intelligence-gathering role and was contemporaneous with similar missions by Francis Younghusband and others" (Howgego, 1850-1940 Polar Regions etc., F6). "Kumbum Monastery is a Buddhist monastery in present day Qinghai, China. Kumbum was founded in 1583 in a narrow valley close to the village of Lusar in the Tibetan cultural region of Amdo. Its superior monastery is Drepung Monastery, immediately to the west of Lhasa. It was ranked in importance as second only to Lhasa" (Wikipedia). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ouverture zu "König Lear." Autograph musical manuscript full score with autograph inscription and corrections

[?]1905. Folio (340 x 270 mm). Sewn. 1f. (title), 39, [iii] (blank) pp. Notated in ink on printed 30-stave music paper "B.C. No. 10." In C minor. Scored for large orchestra. With programmatic subtitles referring to episodes from Shakespeare's drama. With autograph inscription to upper right corner of title: "Dies Exemplar an meinem[!] [?]lieben Schwager Heinz Neujahr [?]1905." Annotations in pencil, most probably autograph, including correction marks, to several pages, especially to pp. 3 (vertical alignment), 8, 10, and 34-35. Somewhat browned; small portion of lower outer corners stained. . A new discovery. The overture is not included in any known works list of Klenau's compositions nor have we located any references to the work in the literature about him. Danish composer Paul von Klenau spent most of his life in Germany and Austria. "With his move in 1902 to the Berlin Hochschule für Musik, where he studied composition under Bruch and the violin under Hali , he started to enter Germanic circles, and as he did so came to receive less recognition in Denmark. In 1904 he went to Munich as a pupil of Thuille... [and later] to Stuttgart, where he studied with von Schillings (1908) and took a post at the Hofoper (1909). A large number of letters from Klenau to Alban Berg, dated from 1920 until the latterÂ’s death in 1935, attest to a close friendship. Some letters to Schoenberg also show that, while probably not a pupil of his, Klenau was certainly intimate with the Schoenberg circle... Klenau... turned in his later years to composing operas and symphonies in which his style moved... towards Schoenbergian atonal procedures. Such a move, particularly during the Third Reich, aroused considerable controversy. Yet the composer skilfully managed to circumvent charges of decadence by proclaiming his loyalty to the Nazi regime, and by publishing a series of articles claiming that his use of 12-note technique derived from Wagner, avoiding any mention of Schoenberg." Thomas Michelsen and Erik Levi in Grove online "Schwager Heinz" refers to Heinrich Simon (1880-1941), the brother of Klenau's wife, Anne-Marie Simon. The son of a banker's family, Simon took a doctorate in German literature. As the publisher of the daily Frankfurter Zeitung he was an influential and well-connected figure in Weimar Germany. He championed the painter Max Beckmann and the young Theodor W. Adorno. Simon was Jewish and emigrated to Palestine in 1934. He later moved to Washington, D.C., where he taught music in his final years.

Adelaide, Government Printer, 1905 - Foolscap folio, 76 pages plus 2 extremely large folding colour maps: 'Map of Explorations in Central Australia . 1898 to 1901', showing the geographical and topographical nature of the relevant regions (575 x 1550 mm, with a small section extending beyond the top margin), and one giving details of an 11,000 square mile block prospected by Davidson in the first two years (paper size 622 x 1747 mm). Recent cloth with titling in gilt on the front cover; first (title) page a little unevenly sunned near the front bottom corner and along the bottom edge, with a few tiny light marks; expert restoration to a tiny cut to the bottom edge of the last seven leaves and a trifling spot of silverfish damage to the leading margin of the last leaf; an excellent copy. South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 27 of 1905; one of only 730 copies. McLaren 7723. The Murchison and Davenport Ranges in 1898 and 1899, and from the vicinity of Tennant Creek westward to within 30 miles of the Western Australian border and back by a circuitous route (Tanami, The Granites) in 1900. Davidson explored one of the few regions that remained unknown at the end of the nineteenth century, and fellow Australian explorer Charles Winnecke considered that 'Mr Davidson's journey, although not quite so extensive, should be classed with that of other leading explorers; his work is of double interest also to us by the fact that it gives us a correct knowledge of the topographical as well as geological nature of the country, which has not been the case with many other explorers'. The last three pages of this paper reprint a lecture on Davidson's explorations given in 1901 by Winnecke, wherein the latter explains how he was responsible for compiling the maps from Davidson's 'bearings and old field notes and plans'.         On a Possible Mode of Detecting a Motion of the Solar System through the Luminiferous Ether" in Nature, Volume 21, 1879-1880, pp. 315

First edition of James Clerk Maxwell's proposal for measuring the ether, a critical prelude to Michelson-Morley's great 'failed' experiment -- a work that set "new standards of reference of time and space from geometry and cosmometry" [and] ultimately leading to Einstein's 1905 proposal that the speed of light is a universal constant" (Lightman, 130). In this paper, Maxwell argues "that the velocity of the earth with respect to the ether alters the velocity of light by a quantity depending on the square of the ratio of the earth's velocity to that of light which he described as 'quite too small to be observed' (Staley, Einstein's Generation, 46). "Michelson did not accept this impossibility and started thinking of detecting the effect" (Soni, Mechanics and Relativity, 286). Note that this important paper takes the form of a letter and that it was published posthumously - and simultaneously in both Nature and The Proceedings of the Royal Society. Exactly simultaneously; one was not published even slightly prior to the other. We offer both for sale. Maxwell believed that the propagation of light required a medium for the waves, dubbed the luminiferous aether. Still, he believed that 'the whole question of the luminiferous medium near the earth, and its connexion with gross matter, is very far as yet from being settled by experiment'. Later Maxwell wrote to the American astronomer David Peck Todd to ask if current observational accuracy of the moons of Jupiter was sufficient for the test he had proposed, but Todd informed him that it was not. Maxwell also included in his letter to Todd a detailed description of a terrestrial method for measuring the local speed of the aether by reflecting two light beams at right angles to each other, and he noted that this would require precision on the order of (v/c)2, which he (Maxwell) thought must surely be unachievable. After Maxwell's death a short time later, Todd published the letter" in both Nature and the Proceedings (Math Pages, 1). Michelson read the Maxwell letter that Todd had published "and was intrigued by the idea of detecting the Earth's motion through the (supposed) ether by measuring variations in the speed of light directly, in the manner that Maxwell had described in the letter, but which he (Maxwell) had assumed was completely impractical. Michelson was an expert in interferometry techniques, and took up the challenge to achieve the level of precision necessary to carry out the test and measure the speed of the aether. I n 1880, Michelson designed an instrument specifically intended to refute Maxwell's supposition and with Edward A. Morley set about a landmark series of experiments that ultimately would "undermine a longstanding belief in something called the luminiferous ether; a stable, invisible, weightless, frictionless… medium that was thought to permeate the universe. Conceived by Descartes, embraced by Newton, and venerated by nearly everyone ever since, the ether held a position of absolute centrality in nineteenth-century physics as a way of explaining how light traveled across the emptiness of space"(Bryson, 117). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Harrison & Sons. Complete volume. 4to. 10.5 by 7.5 inches (263 x 188mm). [xix], 1, [628], 4. From the archives of Underwood & Underwood, some of the views were made into stereoviews, indicated by a check, and others were not used. 63 original tipped on photos, ca. 1905. Mounted on 5 folio sheets consecutively numbered illustrating Tasmania: Hobart, Launceston, New Norfolk, farm views, wharves, etc. Underwood & Underwood were founded in 1887 and were an American firm that made and sold stereo views and later rented images to newspapers and other publications. In 1895 they were the first to enter the education field with the production of stereo views and, in 1898, they began marketing the Underwood Travel System - boxed sets of views of a particular country with descriptions of the scenes printed on the back in 6 languages. They then began to hire photographers and buy images from all over the world. These proof sheets were used to choose the particular view selected for the stereo card. The numbers on the sheet were used to locate the negatives (mostly glass plate), which were kept in large files. The majority of the images are unpublished and most of the negatives were destroyed. Photos are mostly 3 3/4 x 4 1/4" mounted on both sides of 19 x 14 1/4" sheets, usually 6 to 9 on a side.
