        Rip Van Winkle

1905. first edition. First Trade EditionFifty-One Mounted Color Plates[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. IRVING, Washington. Rip Van Winkle. London: William Heinemann, 1905. First Trade Edition. Quarto (9 7/8 x 7 1/4 inches; 251 x 184 mm.). viii, 57, [1 blank], [2]pp. Color frontispiece and fifty color plates mounted with lettered tissue guards.Publishers green cloth, pictorially stamped in gilt on front cover and lettered in gilt on spine, plain green endpapers, all edges stained green. Preliminary text leaves foxed, otherwise an excellent copy.Around the middle of 1904... Ernest Brown & Phillips commissioned 50 color illustrations to Rip Van Winkle, and purchased the originals and all rights for 300 guineas. The publishing rights were then resold in a complicated deal to Heinemann, before the illustrations were exhibited at Brown and Phillips' Leicester Galleries... Most of the Rip drawings were sold at the exhibition, and by October they had all found purchasers."Brown and Phillips' investment, made secure by the keenness of Rackham's purchasers, was not let down by the reviews his work received."... When, in September 1905, Rip Van Winkle was published, comparisons between Rackham and German artists [i.e. Dürer and Joseph Sattler] continued to be voiced, The Times remarking on 'the marvel of his Düreresque detail.'"... The 51 illustrations, for a story of not more than five thousand words, enables the story to be told twice, once through Irving's words, and once again, image by image, through Rackham's pictures... In his illustrations, Rackham pays homage not only to Dürer, Cruikshank and Dutch seventeenth-century painting, but to contemporary artists, too..." (Hamilton)."... But the first work that greatly advanced his fame in the years immediately following his marriage was his edition of Rip Van Winkle… This lovely book decisively established Rackham as the leading decorative illustrator of the Edwardian period... The deluxe edition of the book was fully subscribed before the [Leicester Galleries] exhibition closed" (Hudson).Latimore and Haskell p. 26. Riall pp. 69/70. Gettings p. 176. Hamilton pp. 68.         The Drift of Buddhism From India to the Mongols and Thibet.

London: Robert Banks and son, 1905., 1905. Octavo. Bound in paper covers; originally priced at 6d. With a coloured folding map showing the distribution of world religions. The paper cover is somewhat worn, with some small tears to joints, also somewhat tanned. Largely free from spotting, though with some rust spots where the staples have rusted. The coloured map has been neatly repaired along one fold with archival tape. This pamphlet provides an insight into early perspectives on the newly explored Tibetan plateaux, and speculates about the history of the spread of Buddhism across the Asian continent. Fraser was very interested in psychical research, and is principally known for his "Darkness and Light in the Land of Egypt", which examined wellsprings of invisible energy in the physical world. His view on the success and spread of Buddhism is as partial as one might expect in this period, and, though he cites a number of divergent scholarly views, Fraser argues that 'Buddhism and Braminism are essentially the same belief'. He similarly believes the 'sacred literature of the Hindoos' to be of 'comparatively recent date', and that Buddhism and Druidism share the same ancestral roots. This partiality is further evinced in the map of world religions, which divides the world into Christianity, Buddhism, Mohammedism, and pagan religions. However, Fraser expresses concern that Buddhism is 'waking up', and will soon be a force in the world, as it was when Gengis Khan was coerced by a 'secret posse of priestly advisors'. According to Fraser, half the world's population is Buddhist, so this constitutes a very clear and present danger. It is unclear whether this account was written before the Boxer Rebellion, as no mention is made of the anti-Christian sentiment displayed by the Yihetuan, nor to the specifics of the current Manchu governing dynasty, including the Guangxu Emperor or the Empress Dowager Cixi.

An Eye for an Eye, First Edition. Inscribed by Darrow

1905. Inscribed by Darrow to a Fellow Criminal Defense Attorney Darrow, Clarence [1857-1938]. An Eye for an Eye. New York: Fox, Duffield & Company, 1905. 213 pp. Original cloth, gilt titles to front board and spine. Some rubbing to extremities, corners and spine ends bumped, a few tiny stains, some fading to sections of boards and spine, rear hinge starting. Author inscription to front endleaf, light toning to text, negligible foxing to a few leaves. * First edition. Darrow's only fictional work, aside from his autobiographical novel, Farmington, published in 1904. It tells the story of Jim Jackson, who struggles with poverty and harsh circumstances, before finally murdering his wife in a fit of rage. Faced with the gallows, Jackson confesses: "If ther'd been forty scaffolds right before my eyes, I'd have brought down the poker just the same." Darrow's novel is a sociological polemic which foreshadows such later works as Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy and Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Abe Ravitz, in his Clarence Darrow and the American Literary Tradition, observed that An Eye for an Eye was worthy of a trophy not only for sociological veracity but also for genuine literary achievement. This copy was inscribed "with the regards of his friend and admirer" to James K. Jones, a lawyer in Washington, DC, who often served in criminal cases. The University of Minnesota owns the letter in which he acknowledges receipt of Darrow's book. Jones praises it as "a vivid and truthful picture...of much that comes along in many a poor devil's life... [It] turns light on places where light was needed." Hunsberger, Clarence Darrow: A Bibliography 55.

A commemorative tray made from copper sheathing recovered from Horatio Nelson's flagship, the H.M.S. Victory

n.p., 1905. 12" diameter. "A commemorative copper plate, 12"" diameter, from the 1905 centenary of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson?s death, cast in copper from H.M.S. Victory, Horatio Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, with the engraved title: ""CENTENARY MOMENTO"" bearing the identification: ""Nelson's Victory Presented by the British & Foreign Sailor's Society Containing Victory Copper from Lords of Admiralty"" The copper plate is engraved on the recto with a large anchor and a depiction of the H.M.S. Victory at center. The verso bears an inscription: ?To David From Grandma Styles.? Minor dent at top rim and light oxidation.Following the battle of Trafalgar, the H.M.S. Victory was badly damaged and could not return under the power of its own sail. After delivering Nelson's body to London, the Victory was repaired and remained in active service until 1812 when she was moored at Portsmouth. The ship served as a training ship for some time but by the turn of the 20th century, it had deteriorated so badly that in 1910 a group of enthusiasts established the Society for Nautical Research to help fund restoration of the ship which was finally completed well after the close of the Second World War (the last repairs were not completed until 2005, just in time for the bicentennial of Trafalgar). Today, it is the oldest commissioned warship in the world and attracts over 350,000 visitors as a museum ship. To help fund its restoration efforts, the Society for Nautical Research took unusable parts, including nails and copper sheathing, and melted them down to be refashioned as souvenirs. Provenance: British Foreign Sailors Society; obtained by the War Museum from a prominent British naval family collection, which had additionally featured relics from the noted Benjamin Hill Collection?"that holding included one of the largest swatches of Nelson's ensign that flew at Trafalgar in private hands. Some of these relics were featured in a recently-published peer-reviewed article, a copy of which has been included for reference."

RAMROD JONES, HUNTER AND PATRIOT A TALE OF THE TEXAS REVOLUTION AGAINST MEXICO [manuscript title]

[Austin, Tx, 1905. Folio. Light soiling, confined primarily to exterior leaves. Some light age toning. With authorial corrections throughout. Very good. In a brown half morocco box. Original draft of the novel, written when Clint Brown was an undergraduate at the University of Texas. Brown's conceit is that he has uncovered a manuscript written by Robert Blalock, a firsthand account by a young man who joins the Texas Revolution under the protection of an experienced backwoodsman, Ramrod Jones. It was published in 1905 by the Saalfield Publishing Co. in New York. This draft differs from the published version in various ways, and includes corrections by the author as well as the main draft. Clinton Giddings Brown went on to become District Attorney of San Antonio (1911-13) and then mayor of San Antonio (1913-16). He continued to practice law until he retired, and published a book about his law cases entitled YOU MAY TAKE THE WITNESS (1955). OCLC lists only fifteen copies of the printed version of the present work.

A flattered Wells invited Newbolt to join the Co-efficients dining club, which had been set up by Sidney and Beatrice Webb that year, "'for politicians to meet thinkers'", and included other Edwardian luminaries such as Bertrand Russell, Sir Edward Grey and Alfred Milner. "Newbolt's intimate (if brief) friendship with H.G. Wells was one of the most surprising results of his stint as an editor" (Playing the game: a biography of Sir Henry Newbolt, p. 137).

[SIXTY-TWO ORIGINAL INK DRAWINGS ILLUSTRATING THE HARRIMAN ALASKA EXPEDITION, 1899]

[N.p., likely New York, 1905. Minor edge wear, some thumb-soiling, a few examples with minor marginal surface wear. Very good. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. A substantial archive of original art by William E. Spader, one of the principal artists hired to create illustrations for Edward Harriman's monumental fourteen- volume work THE HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES, published throughout the first decade-and-a-half of the 20th century. This important collection documents one of the great scientific expeditions of the late 19th century. Edward H. Harriman was a wealthy railroad magnate, one of the original robber barons of lore, who greatly desired to hunt bear in Alaska. Never one to do anything small, he decided not only to travel to Alaska to hunt bear on Kodiak Island, but to finance a major scientific expedition to Alaska along the way. The Harriman Expedition comprised an elite roster of scientists, artists, photographers, and naturalists whose goal was to explore and document the Alaskan coastline. For almost two months, in June and July 1899, the S.S. GEORGE W. ELDER steamed up the coast from Seattle to Siberia while various experts, including John Muir, Edward Curtis, and other botanists, biologists, geologists, artists and photographers recorded what they encountered along the way. The greatest benefit of the expedition turned out to be the sizeable published record of the journey, which Harriman financed himself. The fourteen-volume HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES was published by Doubleday beginning in 1901, and remains a landmark of Arctic exploration. William Edgar Spader was a Brooklyn-born craftsperson, and illustrator, whose work appears in much of Harriman's Alaska series. Spader lived and worked in New York, and is best remembered for his watercolors depicting beautiful women of the Art Deco period. Spader's drawings here show landscapes, numerous views of glaciers, seal hunting, camp scenes, several scenes featuring canoeing or kayaking, one illustration of death head carvings, and much more. Some of the illustrations are captioned in pencil on the reverse, identifying specific views of Davidson Glacier, Hinchinbrook Island, Spruce Island, Hanging Valley, Grewingk Glacier, Charpentier Glacier, Plover Bay, Reid Glacier, Yale Glacier, Chilkoot Lake, Russell Fiord, College Fiord, the head of Lynn Canal, a view upland near Walker Bay, the tundra near Port Clarence, a view showing the caves in Barry Glacier, a landscape showing the ridged surface of Columbia Glacier, a large landscape showing the moraine of Columbia Glacier, a landscape of the hills near Brady Glacier, a large scene of an overturned forest near the La Perouse Glacier, an indoor view of a church at Metlakahtla, and a distant view of St. Paul Village, among others. A few examples show production notes, including size notations and penciled frame lines. Spader's dozens of illustrations for Harriman's published work are well-executed black-and-white line drawings after photographs from the expedition by the likes of Grove Karl Gilbert, C. Hart Merriam, A. K. Fisher, W. B. Devereaux, and others. Numerous examples of Spader's original artwork was used to illustrate volume one of the HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES, starting with John Burroughs' introductory essay, "Narrative of the Expedition." One illustration is captioned on the reverse, "Little Auklets Pribilof Islands, Bering Sea For Burroughs' Article." It is marked in pencil "Vol. 1, Pg. 98," where it appears in the printed work. Another illustration captioned on the verso, in pencil, "Church at Metlakahtla" is captioned in the published work as "Interior of Church Made by Indians at Metlakahtla" on page 25 of Burroughs' work. An illustration by Spader of an irrigating water wheel can be seen on page 13 of Burroughs' essay, another of a canoe in drift ice in Yakutat Bay is found on page 95, and yet another of "Yakutat Indians Paddling" appears on page 60. More Spader illustrations can be found in John Muir's contribution in volume one of the HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES; two views of Davidson Glacier appear on page 121 of volume one with both of the original illustrations having pencil notations on the verso identifying them as "Davidson Glacier...Muir or After." Yet more Spader illustrations appear in the final essay in volume one of the published work, George Bird Grinnell's "The Natives of the Alaska Coast Region," namely: The Tlinkit Dance Rattle (p. 139), a Tlinkit canoe of southeast Alaska (p. 140), a Yakutat sealing canoe (p. 162), the aforementioned death's head carving (p. 165), an "Eskimo Summer House and Fireplace, Plover Bay, Siberia" (p. 171), an Eskimo man and woman at Plover Bay (p. 175), and an Eskimo umiak (p. 179). Numerous illustrations of glaciers included here are featured in Gilbert's GLACIERS AND GLACIATION (volume three of the series). An examination of the text yields no fewer than thirteen examples of Spader's artwork featured in the published version of Gilbert's work, highlights of which include large drawings of Barry Glacier, College Fiord, Reid Glacier from the Northeast, the ice cliff of Hubbard Glacier hovering over Disenchantment Bay, and the moraine of the Columbia Glacier. Three of Spader's drawings present here illustrate a poem called "The Song of the Innuit" by William H. Dall, which was printed at the end of the second volume of the HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES. Dr. Dall was a paleontologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, Honorary Curator of Mollusks at the U.S. National Museum, and also a member of the scientific party for the Harriman expedition. One illustration titled "Black Iceberg" is marked on the reverse, "Harriman Alaska Expd. Return original & proof to C. Hart Merriam Washington D.C." Clinton Hart Merriam was the head of the Division of Economic Ornithology and Mammalogy at the United States Department of Agriculture, one of the founders of the National Geographic Society, and most importantly here, the organizer of the scientific party for the Harriman Alaska Expedition. Merriam's treatise on the Bogoslof volcano in volume two of Harriman's Alaska yields yet another Spader illustration utilized in the published work, namely his drawing of Murre's eggs on page 330. This wonderful archive of Spader's work for the Harriman publication is a wealth of research material for understanding the utilization of art during book publication, and for examination of the artist's technique in translating photographs to drawings.
