THE NEW LIFE OF DANTE ALIGHIERI

Cambridge: Printed at the Riverside Press, 1892. No. 1 OF 250 COPIES. Adorning a 13th century classic, this is a very pleasing product of the distinguished and historically important Club Bindery, a workshop established at the end of the 19th century for the purpose of creating fine bindings for American bibliophiles. Written in 1295, the semi-autobiographical text here is a work of courtly love, important as a reflection of the Medieval interest in that genre and also as a piece written partly in prose, partly in verse, and entirely in Italian (rather than Latin). Our translation of "La Vita Nuova" is by art historian and Dante scholar Charles Eliot Norton (1827-1908), who assisted Longfellow with his translation of "The Divine Comedy" and who was one of the founders of the Dante Club. Once the Grolier Club was founded in 1884 as an organization to further the interests of America's most serious bibliophiles, it soon became apparent that the country's few established hand binders were overtaxed in providing repairs and rebinding for the club members' rapidly accumulating acquisitions. As a consequence, in 1895, Grolier members, along with Edwin Holden and other wealthy collectors, established the Club Bindery in order to attract European craftsmen to provide, close to home, fine quality binding work rivalling what was available abroad. The Club Bindery was in operation until 1909, with Robert Hoe being its most influential manager and client. It provided bindings that tended to be traditional in style--though frequently with elaborate decoration--and that lived up to its patrons' expectations in terms of excellence. The first members of the staff of the Club Bindery were the Englishmen R. W. Smith and Frank Mansell. They were subsequently joined by a number of French binders, chief among them being Leon Maillard, who had worked previously for Cuzin, Gruel, and Marius Michel. According to "Bound to Be the Best," the present volume was once owned by Edwin Holden, who served as president of the Grolier Club in 1906. It later passed into the collection of the prominent American connoisseur Henry William Poor (1855-1915), who co-founded the firm that became Standard & Poor's.. 202 x 140 mm. (8 x 5 1/2"). 3 p.l., 168 pp.Translated by Charles Eliot Norton. No. 1 OF 250 COPIES. HANDSOME BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, BY THE CLUB BINDERY (stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper), covers with gilt French fillet border, central panel with double gilt rule frame and oblique fleuron cornerpieces, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with floral cornerpieces and central floral ornament enclosed by a lozenge of small tools, gilt titling, densely gilt turn-ins, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Verso of front free endpaper with morocco bookplate of Henry William Poor. For the binding: "Bound to Be the Best: The Club Bindery" 45. Free endpapers with the usual offset shadow from binder's glue, a couple of trivial spots internally, but A VERY FINE COPY--the text clean, fresh, and bright, and in a lustrous, virtually unworn binding. Adorning a 13th century classic, this is a very pleasing product of the distinguished and historically important Club Bindery, a workshop established at the end of the 19th century for the purpose of creating fine bindings for American bibliophiles. The first edition was published in two volumes as Life and Labour of the People, Vol. I (1889) and Labour and Life of the People, Vol II (1891). The second edition was entitled Life and Labour of the People in London, and was produced in 9 volumes 1892-97. A third edition, running to a grand total of seventeen volumes appeared 1902-3. A noteworthy feature of the study was the production of maps describing poverty (see illustration on the right). Levels of wealth and poverty found by the research's investigators being mapped out on a street by street basis. The note books used to carry out this investigation are held at the Archives Division of the British Library of Political and Economic Science (London School of Economics and Political Science). In 1884 Charles Booth undertook to assist in the allocation of the Lord Mayor of London's Relief Fund, by analysing census returns. From this he discovered the highly unsatisfactory nature of the censuses, and would later become a member of the official committee in charge of the 1891 census and make a number of recommendations for its improvement. In the autumn of 1885 Henry Hyndman published the results of an inquiry into poverty conducted by the Social Democratic Federation, which claimed to show that up to twenty-five percent of the population of London lived in extreme poverty. In early 1886 Booth visited Hyndman, who records in his autobiography that Booth told him that "in his opinion we had grossly overstated the case" and that he would himself be undertaking an inquiry into the condition of workers in London. The first meeting to organise this inquiry was held on 17 April 1886: the work would last until 1903. The work would absorb both Charles and Mary Booth and employ a team of social investigators including, at various times, Beatrice Webb, Arthur Baxter, Clara Collet, David Schloss, George Duckworth, Hubert Llewllyn Smith, Jesse Argyle, and Ernest Aves. .

        DEDICATION TO BACCHUS - Alma-Tadema, 1892.

        The Big Bow Mystery

London Henry & Co 1892 - The book is firmly bound in red half-cloth, with marbled boards and simple gilt titles to the spine, the corners and spine ends are bumped and there is some minor rubbing and staining. The text block is slightly toned, foxed and stained, with browning to the endpapers and a small bookbinder's stamp to the front pastedown. A highlight of the detective fiction genre and noted as such in Queen's Quorum, the U.K. first edition was quite a fragile production, meaning that few survived, and this is an unusually good example. Leland was an unusual character, a native of Philadelphia, he studied at Princeton and Heidelberg, manned the barricades in the 1848 Revolution in Paris, worked as a publicist for Barnum, and served with an emergency regiment at Gettysburg. "The later years of his long life were spent in cultivating a wide circle of friends in America and Europe, in a disinterested and successful effort to establish industrial art as a branch of public education, and in the study of Gypsy lore, tinkers' language, Indian legends, Italian witches, and all things exotic, mysterious, and occult" [Cambridge History of English and American Literature]. He is best known now for his work Aradia, an account of popular occult practises in Tuscany based on the testimony of a Florentine witch named Maddalena who claimed a lineage from the Etruscans and direct knowledge of ancient rituals, a work which has had a profound influence on the development of modern paganism and Wicca. Ownership inscription of the jurist John Westlake (1828–1913).

        History of Reynard the Foxe

1892. [CAXTON, William]. The History of Reynard the Foxe. Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1892. Tall quarto, original full limp vellum, yapp edges, original silk ties. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $8200.Splendid limited Kelmscott Press edition of Reynard, set from Caxton’s 1481 English translation of the ancient Dutch tale, one of only 310 copies, in the original vellum.Reynard the Foxe, translated from the Dutch, was ""perhaps the most popular of Caxton's translations down the ages"" (Deacon, 149). In his preface he disclaims, ""If anything be written herein that may grieve or displease man, blame me not, but the fox, for they be his words and not mine."" The Kelmscott Press was founded in 1891 by William Morris, Pre-Raphaelite painter, designer, architect, and printer. ""Morris sought to revive what he saw as the purity of the first century of printing, and to produce what he described as books which 'would have a definite claim to beauty… and be easy to read"" (Feather, 152). His ""passionate craftsmanship was the spark which ignited a 50-year renaissance of bookmaking in England, on the Continent, and in the United States"" (Art of the Printed Book, 36). The Kelmscott printing of Reynard contains ""one of Morris' finest designed titles"" (Forman, 164). Text printed in black and red Troy type, with full woodcut ornamental border around the title-page opening, numerous partial borders and elaborate eight-line initial letters. This is one of 300 copies printed on paper from a total edition of only 310. Ransom 10. Peterson A10. Small owner stamp.A few instances of mild embrowning to text; original vellum unusually lovely. A nearly fine copy of this impressive production.

HISTORY OF REYNARD THE FOXE. Translated out of the Dutch by William Caxton.

Hammersmith: William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 1892. The famous Kelmscott Press edition limited to 300 copies only. Profusely illustrated and decorated throughout from the designs of William Morris. 4to, publisher’s original limp vellum with ties. (vi),163 (including table and colophon). A fine and handsome copy, the paper very fresh with only a few meager traces of the spotting to which Kelmscott books are so tragically prone and that nearly all confined to the edges or endpapers, the vellum fine with the silk ties intact. HIGHLY IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION OF THIS GREAT WORK and one of the first black-letter works to be issued at the Kelmscott Press. The book is printed in Chaucer type and is replete with beautiful engraved initials, border decorations and magnificently illustrated and decorated opening leaves. Three hundred copies only were issued. This is one of the finest and most beautiful of the big Kelmscott books. “Reynard The Fox hero of several medieval European cycles of versified animal tales that satirize contemporary human society. Though Reynard is sly, amoral, cowardly, and self-seeking, he is still a sympathetic hero, whose cunning is a necessity for survival. He symbolizes the triumph of craft over brute strength, usually personified by Isengrim, the greedy and dull-witted wolf.” EB

        THE AMERICAN CLAIMANT

1892. With 81 Illustrations by Dan Beard and Hal Hurst. London: Chatto & Windus, 1892. 32 pp ads dated May 1892. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First English Edition. For this edition Hal Hurst's illustrations, which had appeared in the "Idler" serialization, were added to the Dan Beard illustrations of the American edition. The Johnson bibliography cites a publication date of May 2, 1892 for this edition, which would be supported by the date of the ad catalogue; however, Blanck notes that it was not advertised as "ready" until that Autumn, implying that the book was not issued for about four months after it was bound.~This is a near-fine copy, with scarcely any wear; there is a small spot at a corner of the rear cover, and as always the spine is a little faded (less than usual). The English edition is scarcer than the American one. Johnson pp 54-55; McBride p. 135; see Blanck 3434.

The Diary of a Nobody first appeared as a serial in Punch in 1888?9 and was published (in considerably expanded form) as a book by J. W. Arrowsmith of Bristol in June 1892. In their precise and careful detail these illustrations (thirty-three black and white line drawings) reinforce the text to perfection" (ODNB).
