Metchnikoff was awarded half of the 1908 Nobel Prize in Physiology / Medicine for his pioneering research on phagocytes (infection-fighting cells) and their role in physiology and pathology; he was the first to demonstrate experimentally the part that phagocytes play in inflammation. A native of Russia, Metchnikoff moved to Paris in 1888 at the invitation of Louis Pasteur, who gave Metchnikoff a position at the Pasteur Institute. In 1891 Metchnikoff gave a series of lectures at the Institute dealing with “the history of various theories of inflammation and their investigation, and chiefly with the roles of phagocytes in the animal kingdom” (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). The collection lectures were published in 1892, with an English translation appearing the following year. 2307.

        The Victoria Clock Tower.

1892 - 'The Victorian Clock Tower' Etching, drypoint, printed in black. Buhot's print of the Houses of Parliament and the Clock Tower. Although the print is titled 'The Victoria Clock Tower', the name is slightly mysterious. Although the Victoria Tower was suggested as a name for either the Bell or the Clock Tower in the nineteenth century when Parliament was rebuilt, the nickname of Big Ben became so popular that the idea was abandoned. Instead, the tower at the south west corner was renamed in honour of Queen Victoria during her Diamond Jubilee in 1897, but that was five years after the print was made.         The Principles and Practice of Medicine, Designed for the Use of Practitioners and Students of Medicine

xvi, [2], 1079, [7], 8 pp. 8vo. An immensely important work of general medical knowledge, written by a co-founder of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Osler's creation of the first residency program and emphasis on teaching students through clinical experience rather than lectures led many to call him the father of modern medicine. Garrison-Morton 2231: "Osler's textbook was the best English work on medicine of its time. He became Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford in 1904. Besides being one of the greatest of all clinicians, he was possessed of a fine literary style and an extensive knowledge of medical bibliography. Garrison has written of him: "When he came to die, Osler was, in a very real sense, the greatest physician of our time… Good looks, distinction, blithe, benignant manners, a sunbright personality, radiant with kind feeling and good will toward his fellow men, an Apollonian poise, swiftness and surety of thought and speech, every gift of the gods was his; and to these were added careful training, unsurpassed clinical ability, the widest knowledge of his subject, the deepest interest in everything human, and a serene hold upon his fellows that was as a seal set upon them"." First edition, second state ('Gorgias' spelled correctly on p. vi, June 1892 ads follow text). Professionally rebound - black leather spine, cloth boards, gilt titles, new end sheets. An exceptional copy - no stains, marks, tears, or toning to pages. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1892. First Edition. Collectible; Like New/No Jacket.

Bon exemplaire

The Nature of Gothic A Chapter of the Stones of Venice

London/Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1892. Limited First Edition. Limp Vellum. Very Good. One of 500 copies, all on paper, printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, Hammersmith, and published by George Allen, with a preface by William Morris. 8vo (8" x 5.5".) [1], iv, [1], 127, [1] pp. Elaborate woodcut border on opening page; nine 10-line woodcut initials & numerous 6-line ones, 19 architectural figures in the text, two Kelmscott woodcut devices (front and back). Original limp vellum, yapped edges, spine lettered in gilt, page edges untrimmed. Handsome printing of the chapter from Ruskin's The Stones of Venice. Pages unopened except for the first two leaves. Bookplate of Noel Ledbrook Griffith. John Ruskin (1819?1900) had a strong influence on William Morris and the arts and crafts movement. One can assume that this work must have been an important one for William Morris, who stated in the preface, "In future days [this work] will be considered as one of the very few necessary and inevitable utterances of the century." "This chapter of The Stones of Venice, which Ruskin always considered the most important in the book, was first printed separately in 1854 as a sixpenny pamphlet. Morris paid more than one tribute to it in Hopes and Fears for Art." (Sparling). "This chapter of The Stones of Venice (1853) had previously been reprinted as a 4d. pamphlet by F.J. Furnivall on the occasion of the opening of the Working Men's College in 1853. Cook and Wedderburn, in their Library Edition of Ruskin's Works, add the following bibliographical note: 'The Kelmscott edition was set up from the 1886 edition of the complete work, and some misprints which crept into that issue are repeated.'" (Peterson). From the collection of John Carrol Collins.

Very good condition 4 volume set which consists of 8 books - each volume has a part one and a part 2. 8 volume matched set bound in red levant morocco leather over red cloth covered boards.         The Kiss - Alma-Tadema, 1892.

Prijs: € 3.150,- .

[the handsome Ulizio set] A Novel. In Three Volumes. London and Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1892. 2 pp Vol III undated ads. Original brownish-mauve cloth. First Edition, which consisted of only 500 copies.~BORN IN EXILE... is one of Gissing's most sustained pieces of fictional autobiography and among his most fascinating performances.... It brings together in closest proximity the themes of class, money, and women so central to all his work; and the exile motif is nowhere else so ubiquitous. [Halperin]~Gissing submitted BORN IN EXILE (then called GODWIN PEAK, for the protagonist) to Smith Elder, and, since he felt NEW GRUB STREET had been such a success, "stated" his price of 250 pounds; Smith Elder denied that NEW GRUB STREET had been a success and got him to lower his price to 150 pounds, but even then told him his books would not sell unless he made them less pessimistic. It was at this point that Gissing contacted the literary agent A.P. Watt, who, after having no luck with Chatto & Windus, with Longmans, nor with Bentley, managed to place the novel with the Scottish firm of A. & C. Black -- for 150 pounds less Watt's 10%. The book sold only moderately well as a three-decker, but did better in subsequent one-volume "cheap" editions.~This is a handsome, near-fine set, with minor rubbing at the extremities (a little more at the foot of Vol I's spine than elsewhere). Atypically, the front covers are clean and unmarred -- indicating that this set managed to escape the clutches of the lending libraries, which bought most three-deckers and promptly defaced them with labels. Except for minor cracking of one endpaper, the original black-coated endpapers are present and intact.~In terms of Gissing scarcity, Sadleir (who did not have a copy) considered this title third behind THE UNCLASSED and ISABEL CLARENDON (of which he did have a copy of each). Coustillas A11.1; Collie A11a; Spiers & Coustillas N1; not in Sadleir but see p. 378; Wolff 2542. Provenance: each front paste-down bears the bookplate of renowned bibliophile B. George Ulizio (1889-1969) of Pine Valley NJ, whose initial library was sold at Anderson Galleries in 1931 and whose subsequent collection of 1500+ titles went to Kent State University.

This is an unusually beautiful set in Fine condition. Three minor stains to rear dustjacket of volume I. Konstantin Georgiyevich Paustovsky (31 May [O.S. 19 May] 1892 July 14, 1968) was a Russian Soviet writer nominated for the Nobel Prize for literature in 1965. Paustovsky began writing while still in Gymnasium. His first works were imitative poetry. He eventually limited his writing to prose, after Ivan Bunin who wrote in a letter, "I think that your sphere, your real poetry, is prose. It is here, if you are determined enough, that I am sure you can achieve something significant." His first stories to be published were Na vode (On The Water) and Chetvero (The Four) in 1911 and 1912. During World War I, Paustovsky wrote some sketches of life at the front, and one of them was also published. His first book, Morskiye Nabroski (Sea Sketches), was published in 1925, but was little noticed. It was followed by Minetoza in 1927, and the romantic novel Blistaiushie Oblaka (Shining Clouds) in 1929. His work of this period was influenced by Alexander Grin as well as the writers of the "Odessa school", (Isaac Babel, Valentin Kataev, and Yuri Olesha). In the 1930s Paustovsky visited various constructions sites and wrote in praise of the industrial transformation of the country. To that period belong the novels Kara-Bugaz (1932) and Kolkhida (1934). Kara-Bugaz won particular praise. It is essentially a tale of adventure and exploration in the region around Kara-Bugaz Bay, where the air is mysteriously heavy. It begins in 1847 and moves to the Russian Civil War period when a group of Red Guards is abandoned to near-certain death on a desolate island. There are, however, survivors, who are rescued by an explorer. Some of the survivors stay on to help in the exploration, development and study of the natural wealth of the region. Paustovsky continued to explore historical themes in Severnaya Povest ("Tale of the North", 1938). In this tale, after the anti-Tsarist Decembrist uprising in Saint Petersburg, a wounded officer who took part in the uprising and a sailor try to make it by foot across the ice to Sweden. They are captured in a sequence of dramatic events. Years later, in Leningrad of the 1930s, the great-grandsons of the participants in the events unexpectedly meet. In the late 1930s, Russian nature emerged as a central theme for Paustovsky, for example, in Letniye Dni ("Summer Days", 1937) and Meshcherskaya Storona (1939). For Paustovsky, nature was a many-faceted splendor in which man can free himself from daily cares and regain his spiritual equilibrium. This focus on nature drew comparisons with Mikhail Prishvin. Prishvin himself wrote in his diary, "If I were not Prishvin, I would like to write like Paustovsky." During World War II Paustovsky served as a war correspondent on the southern front. In 1943 Paustovsky produced a screenplay for the Gorky Film Studio production of "Lermontov", directed by A. Gendelshtein. Another work of note is Tale of the Woods (1948). This story opens in a remote forest in the 1890s, where Tchaikovsky is composing a symphony. The young daughter of the local forester often brings Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky berries. Half a century later, the daughter of this girl is a laboratory technician at the local forest station. From 1948 until 1955 Paustovsky taught at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute. Paustovsky also edited a few literary collections, Literary Moscow (1956) and Pages from Tarusa, in which he tried to bring new writers to the public's attention and to publish writers suppressed during the Joseph Stalin years. Other major works include Snow, Crossing Ships (1928) The Black Sea (1936) and The Rainy Dawn (1946). Paustovsky was also the author of several plays and fairy tales, including "Steel Ring". Perhaps Paustovskys most famous work is his autobiography Povest o Zhizni (Story of a Life). It is not a strictly historical document but rather a long, lyrical tale focusing on the internal perceptions and poetic development of the writer . It has been called a "biography of the soul" rather than a biography of events. Nonetheless, it does provide a unique view of life in Russia during the turbulent years of WWI, the Russian Civil War and rise of the Soviets, all of which Paustovsky participated in. In 1965, Paustovsky was nominated for a Nobel Prize for literature, the prize was awarded instead to Mikhail Sholokhov. In February 1966 he was one of the 25 prominent figures from science and the arts who signed a letter to the 23rd Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, appealing against re-Stalinization in the wake of the Sinyavsky-Daniel trial. He died in Moscow on July 14, 1968. (Wikipedia)

Sol Fa Si La Si Ré Polka" - Autograph Musical Manuscript from his First Performance with a Professional Orchestra

      - An historic autograph musical manuscript of a very early short piece for orchestra in the hand of the great conductor known for conducting the premiere of the Rite of Spring and for his tenures with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, and the San Francisco Symphony. A light-hearted polka named after the notes of its primary theme, which when spoken together quickly form the phrase "Sol facile à cirer" -- "Floor easy to polish" -- the work was composed for piano in 1892, when Monteux was only sixteen and studying at the Paris Conservatory. When invited to conduct a piece at a charity event, he then orchestrated the polka. At this event, according to biographer John Canarina, "Standing for the first time in front of a professional orchestra, directing his own composition, he then and there determined to become a conductor, an ambition, that, according to Monteux, he had harbored since the age of twelve." Although Monteux continued to compose and play the viola as a teenager, it was at this point that his attention turned to conducting, his great calling and passion -- making this work an important marker of this turning point.Scored for flute, oboe, two clarinets, English horn, bassoon, two cornets, three trombones, percussion, and strings, the polka is 92 measures long, over 10 pp. of manuscript in 10-bar systems. Dedicated on the cover to "mon ami Henri Hamburg." In pen and pencil, with page numbers and the title, inscription, and signature on the cover page in blue colored pencil, on 18-stave manuscript paper embossed at the upper left with the seal of Lard-Esnault, Paris. Overall toning, some light former water damage to the lower edge, and light wear and soiling to the cover and edges; overall in very good condition. 14 x 10.5 inches (35.3 x 27 cm). From the estate of Monteux's daughter, Nancie Monteux Barendse.
