Les causes de l'effondrement économique, suivies du Prolétariat agricole et du Prolétariat ouvrier.

Paris, Georges Carré, 1893. - 8vo. (4), III, (1), 360, (2) pp. Contemporary green half cloth. First edition. - Nettlau has called the radical republican and Proudhonist Leverdays (1835-90) "the most powerful libertarian writer of his day, albeit no longer in touch with the movement as he had been with those of the 1860s and the Commune" (cf. Geschichte der Anarchie IV, p. 248). - Some browning; occasional pencil notes; corners bumped. Rare.          The Poems.

London: Lawrence & Bullen, 1893 - Octavo (181 x 120 mm). Modern black quarter calf, raised bands to spine, compartments ruled in gilt, orange and red morocco label, gilt rule to marbled sides, vellum tips, black endpapers, top edge gilt. Offsetting from tissue guard to title page, edges slightly toned. An excellent copy. Limited edition, number 96 of 200 copies printed on large paper. This scarce edition contains an introduction by Yeats which saw his "passionate defense" of Blake (Ross). Yeats "also marked down William Blake as a master early on, and with Edwin Ellis produced a large-scale commentary on Blake's prophetic writings in 1893. While often erratic and idiosyncratic, it helped establish the importance of Blake's esoteric verse" (ODNB). Ross p. 445; Wade 220. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Spirit Lamp. An Oxford Magazine without News. [Continued as: An Aesthetic Literary and Critical Magazine.]

Oxford: for the proprietors by James Thornton, May 1892 – June 1893 - 15 volumes, octavo. Original wrappers (vol. I, nos. 1–6 and vol. II, no. 1 beige wrappers printed in black; vol. II, nos. 2–4 and vol. III, nos. 1–3 white wrappers printed in blue with Magdalen tower illustration; vol. IV, nos. 1–2 blue wrappers printed in black). Vol. II, no. 1 in the first state with no "Second Edition" to front wrapper (no priority: "only one impression was actually printed" – Mason). Housed in a green morocco-backed bookform slipcase with the numbers held in two cloth chemises. A few of the early numbers with some early repair to wrappers, some with recent light repair; otherwise general chipping to the extremities of the brittle first few numbers, the white wrappered numbers in much better condition though with some staples rusted, and the blue wrappered volumes in near-fine condition but for some small chips to the wrapper edges. Nonetheless an extraordinary survival in very good condition overall, with some numbers uncut. First edition, all published, in original wrappers, an extremely rare complete set. The Spirit Lamp, the Oxford "aesthetic" literary magazine edited by Lord Alfred Douglas, became over four terms the crucible of a radical Uranian culture, and was decried as an "unholy, decadent academy" in rival Oxford magazine The Ephemeral. The Spirit Lamp printed unguardedly homosexual poems by Oscar Wilde, then Douglas's lover, as well as pieces by other such notable decadents as Lionel Johnson, John Addington Symonds, Robert Ross, Max Beerbohm, Pierre Louÿs, and many others. The first volume of the magazine was issued in six numbers during Trinity term 1892, under the editorship of Sandys Watson. It was set up as "An Oxford Magazine Without News", mischievous and facetious, with articles and satirical poems published anonymously or initialled. To give a flavour: in one early number a piece entitled "Pneumatolampadomastix" imagines a board of authorities condemning the magazine, followed by a Mr Oscar Wilde contributing: "The writers are quite unintelligible, and will consequently never be found out", and the scene closed by Mr George Meredith: "Foolish Young Fellows!" The second volume was published in four numbers during Michaelmas term 1892, now adopting illustrated wrappers and beginning to print the identities of its contributors. Lord Alfred Douglas's first contribution was printed in the third number, in an extraordinarily impertinent essay on the dullness of dons: "Dons occupy in the University the same position as moral laws occupy in the Universe; that is why they are so tedious. Perhaps, after all, the real reason why Dons are so uninteresting, is that they stand out against a background of such intense interest and beauty that they appear darker and duller than they really are. However that may be, they remain the one dull thing in Oxford, the one commonplace in the romance of an exquisite life, the one harsh discord in the harmony of a perfect music. Let us forgive them, but forget that they exist". Perhaps due to the popularity of the piece, or the fact that Douglas had some literary cachet for being then in the full swing of an affair with the famous Wilde (they had met in 1891, introduced by Lionel Johnson, and had summered together in 1892, during which Wilde was writing A Woman of No Importance), Watson surrendered the ownership and editorship of The Spirit Lamp to Douglas. Thus, from the following number (vol II, no. 4) right through its two subsequent volumes (vol. III, nos. 1–3: 3 February–10 March 1893, Hilary term; and vol. IV, nos. 1–2, May–June 1893, Trinity term), Douglas began to include radical new content. The first number under Douglas's editorship was introduced by "The New Remorse", a powerful poem of homosexual awakening by Wilde which he, besotted, had written out for Douglas shortly after they had met: "Who cometh in dyed garments from the South? / It is thy new-found Lord, and he shall kiss / The yet unravished roses of thy mouth, / And I shall weep, and worship, [Attributes: First Edition]

      G. P. Putnam's Sons (1893), New York & London - Small quarto (6" x 9-1/4") in the original gilt-decorated cream cloth with brown lettering on the front cover; xvi, 472 pages. Illustrated with a frontispiece plate, drawings at the chapter heads and tails, and 23 full-page plates by A. B. Frost, Henry Sandham, J. Carter Beard, Frederick Remington, and Harry Eaton. This trade edition preceded the limited edition of 200 copies, per a "Notice" that is tipped in before the frontispiece announcing that the limited edition is in preparation. A monumental Association Copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To my beloved friend,/Jacob A. Riis;/may you enjoy the/northwoods as much as I/enjoyed the great plains/& the Rockies!/Theodore Roosevelt/July 1901." The number "14" has been inserted after the word "July," possibly by Roosevelt. Laid in is a pass made out to Riis for a Roosevelt Reception aboard the U.S. Revenue Steamer Androscoggin on 18 June 1910. Of Jacob Riis, his lifelong friend, Roosevelt remarked in his AUTOBIOGRAPHY: "I am tempted to call [him] the best American I ever knew." In 1904 Riis published a biography of his good friend titled THEODORE ROOSEVELT: THE CITIZEN. Jacob Riis, among the most dedicated advocates for America's oppressed and downtrodden, arrived in New York from his native Denmark at the age of 21 in 1870. A pioneer in photojournalism, Riis photographed and wrote about the slums and tenements of a New York in the dawn of a new century. Riis came to Roosevelt's attention through his 1890 book HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES. As Commissioner of the New York City Police Department, Roosevelt accompanied Riis on his evening travels through the slums and witnessed firsthand the inhumane conditions endured by many of New York's inhabitants. In his 1901 book MAKING OF AN AMERICAN, Riis wrote of Roosevelt: "It could not have been long after I wrote HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES that he came to the Evening Sun office one day looking for me. I was out and he left his card merely writing on the back of it that he had read my book and had 'come to help'. That was all, and it tells the whole story of the man. I loved him from the day I first saw him; nor ever in all the years that have passed has he failed of the promise made then. No one ever helped as he did. For two years, we were brothers on Mulberry Street." Roosevelt, in turn, wrote of Riis after his death: "It is difficult for me to write of Jacob Riis only from the public standpoint. He was one of my truest and closest friends. I have ever prized the fact that once, in speaking of me, he said, 'since I met him he has been my brother.' I have not only admired and respected him beyond measure, but I have loved him dearly . and I mourn him as if he were one of my own family." Covers soiled and marked, tight. Spine darkened, gilt still strong, with some chipping at the spine tips. Good or better and an Association Copy of the first order [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

         The Pentamerone

London: Henry, 1893. First Edition. Cloth. fine. 2 vols. 1st edition of this translation. Original cloth, fine condition, fresher than an Italian bachelor. A book that is painfully common but not every set looks like this one, much in the same way that not every man with a mustache is a pedophile. This 1893 Burton edition is considerably more comprehensive than any earlier translation into English, but for all the praise heaped on Sir Richard, I think (where comparable) it's just a minor improvement over Taylor's translation, if it is any improvement at all.

London and Felling-on-Tyne: The Walter Scott Publishing Company, Ltd, 1893. Hardcover. Good. First illustrated edition, uncertain issue and publication date. (Undated title page, which may not be an issue point. Turner's The Walter Scott Publishing Company apparently examined a single paperback copy with a title page dated 1911 and no illustrations, while referencing a 1893 ad for the book, which would make their publication date dubious for the first thus. Line Ettlinger and Gladstone reference an 1893 Walter Scott edition of which I can find little documentation. A bit of a bibliographical puzzle.) Original crimson cloth decorated in gilt, black endpapers. 456pp. Illustrated. Good+ with cloth worn and a bit chipped at head and tail, signatures a little strained and rear hinge split but internally clean. A rare early English-language edition of Dostoyevsky's masterpiece.

Étude de Femme [Study of A Woman]

Paris: Édouard Kleinmann, 1893. First Edition. fine. Toulouse-Lautrec. 1st printing, 1st issue, Wittrock 11, the rare state A, of 3 (A, B, and C). This state A precedes the edition of 100 and is geometrically more limited. A fine lithograph on laid Japan paper, with full margins (9 5/8" X 15 1/2"). Signed by the artist with his monogram in black pencil, and it is anomalous to find his lithographs of this type signed by hand, as what is usually seen are his initials applied in the plate or with a stamp. The ownership chain tells a fully comforting tale. Ex-Roger Marx, his tiny indicator in the corner, and his pencil note, in French, along the bottom edge. Ex-The Museum of Modern Art, New York, from their own collection, and sold to subsidize their Acquisitions Fund, an impeccable provenance for the certainty of the lithograph, but even more importantly, for the certainty of the pencil signature. Framed. There is a painting, on cardboard, of the same young woman, in the same pose, at The Musee Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi, but it isn't a great painting, inasmuch as it has none of the background, and she isn't drawn as pretty. Toulouse-Lautrec was 4 feet 8 inches tall, with a normal size body on child size legs, but he was a superstar post-impressionist painter, the first artist to hang in the Louvre while he was alive, and he lived in the Montmartre, and chilled at Le Moulin Rouge (The Red Mill), where a table was always reserved for him, so he ate well, drank fine cognac, and got laid a lot, by dazzling babes, who really liked him.

New York Printed for the Committe [The De Vinne Press] 1893 - One of 500 Beautifully Bound Large Paper Copies [BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER]. [DE VINNE PRESS]. [UPDIKE, Daniel Berkeley]. The Book Of Common Praye, and Administration of the Sacraments and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church According to the Use of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America. Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David New York: Printed for the Committee [The De Vinne Press], 1893. One of 500 large-paper decorative copies. This edition was to be distributed to the Subscribers. This copy numbered "12" in pencil at the colophon. Thick folio (14 1/4 x x 10 1/4 inches; 357 x 260 mm). [28], [1]-566, [2, colophon] pp. Text printed in red and black. Printed on thick paper. Each page with ornate border. With "Certificate" and facsimile signatures of all members of the prayer book revision committee. With the pamphlet entitled "On the Decorations of the Limited Edition of the Standard Prayer Book of 1892" laid in. Original full vellum over beveled boards. Front board and spine elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt. Two brass clasps. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Elaborate gilt stamped endpapers. Two tiny pin holes in front outer hinge. Vellum a with some very minor discoloration. Internally extremely clean. Previous owner's ink signature, dated 1893 on front free endpaper. Overall an about fine copy. From the Colophon: "The printing of this edition of the Book of Common Prayer on American hand-made paper was finished on the twenty-second day of November, MDCCCXCIII [1893], at the De Vinne Press in the City of New York. The plan of symbolism and method of decoration were arranged by Mr. Daniel Berkeley Updike: The preparatory studies of plants were made by Mr. William Wells Bosworth: The designs for the borders and cover by Mr. Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, and the final drawings for reproduction by Mr. Joseph Eliot Hill." "The General Convention of1892 authorized a new revision of the Book of Common Prayer for the Episcopal Church, which was to be the standard from which all new and variously priced editions of the Prayer Book would be printed. The pagination was standardized, as were all other aspects of the book, from the text to the precise sequence, instructions, and so on. The Standard Book was made for presentation to various dioceses and dignitaries, with one, specially bound, to be kept by a 'Custodian of the Prayer Book'. The publication committee turned to Theodore Low De Vinne to print the text, and for the ornamental borders it approached a young printer, Daniel Berkeley Updike, who had recently founded his own press. Updike devised the design program and the architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue executed the vaguely medievalized floral borders that had to surround every page of De Vinne's modern type. They tried their best to complement the text, bit it must be said that they failed. However, the book, enhanced bu handsome endpapers, with a beautiful gold-stamped parchment binding with ornate clasps- All designed by Goodhue- is a formidable piece of work. John Pierpont Morgan was the great moving force behind production of this book, collecting significant older Prayer Books in great number for the committee to evaluate and select. The enormous costs of the undertaking of the Standard Book were totally borne by him." (The Oxford Guide to The Book of Common Prayer: A Worldwide Survey. Edited by Charles Hefling, Cynthia Shattuck). HBS 67907. $1,250 [Attributes: Hard Cover]
