[Click Below for Full Description]

Harrison & Sons and Bernard Quaritch, 1893 & 1897., London. Two volumes, publishers dark blue cloth, minor shelf wear and rubbing to edges and spine ends, minor bump to corners, titles in gilt to front covers and to spines, some very minor rubbing/light scratching to boards, no affect, top edge text block, red. Volume one: back board inner hinge cracking, very few pencil notes, outer margins uncut, some leaves unopened, text is clean and crisp, about near fine. Volume two: front board innner hinge is starting, but holding strong, most leaves are uncut and unopened, thus near fine or better, clean and crisp. Last auction record via Rare Book Hub was in 2006, before that 1947. Illustrations: Frontispiece plate to each volume (2). Fully illustrated with text figures. John O?Neill (1837-1895). We find little information of O?Neill, however it appears through research that his Night of the Gods was very influential amongst mystic and esoteric circles. ?A most freshly conceived and freshly written work in comparative mythology. He (O?Neill) has a great advantage over ordinary mythographers - one given him by the class of myths he has chosen to investigate - to wit, cosmic and cosmogonic ones. Wherever primitive men have lived there cosmic appearances have wrought upon the human imagination, and called forth explanatory theories and conceptions which in mythic forms were passed down from generation to generation.? Claude MONET
Condition: Like New. Hans Scharoun (1893-1972) first achieved international recognition in 1927 with his controversial house for the Stuttgart Weissenhofsiedlung. His experiments with free planning and dynamic interior space continued in his native Germany through the difficult wartime years, from which he emerged with renewed energy and a consolidated architectural philosophy. As an important exponent of Organic Architecture, Scahroun developed a radical new kind of architectural space, and his disdain for imposed form and emphasis on open-minded discovery have proved increasingly influential among a younger generation of architects. Peter Blundell Jones's exhaustive study provides a comprehensive overview of Scharoun's life and work and explores his theoretical stance in relation to contemporaries such as Hugo Haring, Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. Generously illustrated throughout with plans and drawings, and specially commissioned photographs by Dennis Gilbert, this book presents a timely re-evaluation of Scharoun's unique contribution to architectural theory and design. 1893. DAPHNIS AND CHLOE - BOIS de CHARLES RICKETTS à chaque page - SUPERBE ILLUSTRATION ET TYPOGRAPHIE PRÉRAPHAÉLITE - tirage limité à 210 exemplaires - in-4, cartonnage d'éditeur - BALLANTYNE PRESS, LONDRES1893 - BEL EXEMPLAIRE DE CE MAGNIFIQUE OUVRAGE Daphnis and Chloe is a relatively large book - measuring 29 by 22 cm. It was issued by Elkin Mathews and John Lane at the Bodley Head in 210 copies, all bound in plain green cloth. The book belongs to the early works of the Vale Artists, as they were called in several portraits of them in The Sketch (1895): Ricketts, Shannon, Lucien Pissarro and Reginald Savage. The name referred to Ricketts's and Shannon's house and studios in The Vale, and would become the name of their private press as well: The Vale Press. The cover for Daphnis and Chloetestifies of their wish to publish the book themselves, and mentions 'The Vale' on the spine. While the artists were still working on the engravings, John Lane of The Bodley Head agreed to take the risk of publication, and paid for the costs of printing and binding.

Pierre: Pierre Journal, printers, 1893. Good.. 16pp. Original light red printed wrappers, stapled. Lightly creased and soiled, several small chips and tears. First and last page stained pink from wrappers. Rare promotional work for Hughes County, South Dakota, located (as indicated in the title) in the center of the state, and including the capital of Pierre. The work includes the usual information about local agriculture and industry, as well as sections detailing each town -- Pierre, Blunt, Canning, and Harold. For a promotional work, it is unusually frank and honest about the living situation in the area. A section headed "Who Should Come?" exhorts the reader to emigrate only if industrious and willing to put up with some hardships at the moment: "No person is advised to come and settle here who is not willing to put up with some privations, or who expects to live and grow wealthy by slothful or indolent habits. This is a climate that instills energy and industry in a man, and no one is wanted here who is not capable of doing his part in the great work of civilization." This work sold for $75 in the Streeter Sale in 1968. We locate fewer than ten copies in OCLC. Streeter Sale 2086.

BLAKE, William ] Edwin John Ellis and William Butler Yeats.
Bernard Quaritch, London, 1893. Hardcover. Three volumes, complete. Quartos. (10.5 x 7 inches). Vol. I: xvi, 420, b&w fold-out; Vol. II: viii, 436, b&w fold-out; Vol. III: x,100, ii, approx. 300 + reproductions from Blake's illuminated volumes, 176pp. Bright green cloth, Blake's "Reunion of the Soul and Body" elaborately reproduced in gilt on front boards covers, gilt titling and illustration to spines, B&w frontis portraits in each volume, top edge gilt. One of 500 sets of the regular paper issue (there were also 150 large paper copies, although these did not have the magnificent gilt bindings). A ground breaking set, in which Ellis and Yeats showcased the extraordinary versatility and thought of Blake, including a number of apparently previously unpublished works in the selection. Yeats, who at the time of writing was deeply immersed in his own mystical adventure (he joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1890) was apparently largely responsible for writing the sections dealings with the symbolism and mysticism in Blake's work. Originally in a private library, with the owner's name stamp on the first blank of each volume, and small darkened spots at the bottom of each of the spines where he apparently had his own shelf numbers. No other marks, other than pencilling (see further below). A well-used set - all 3 volumes are a bit worn and rubbed at all extremities, a little shaken, cloth a little darkened with minor marks from handling, some bumps and chafing to corners and spine ends, chafing to spine edges, spines darkened and a few tiny tears at spine ends. Wright, Virgil M.; Smith, Aurelius, editor
Indianapolis: Frank H. Smith, Publisher, 1893. 398pp. plus [2]pp. of advertisements. Publisher's brown cloth, gilt spine title. Gilt faded on the spine, cloth very lightly worn. Front hinge loosening slightly, staples exposed between final page and advertisements. Trimmed advertisements for the book adhered to front pastedown. Very good. Presentation copy, inscribed in pencil on front free endpaper: "To Mr. E C Shields with compliments of The Editor." This scarce volume by Virgil Wright is a quasi- Bildungsroman of sorts, chronicling his life from his modest Kentucky childhood to his rising success as a "drummer," or traveling salesman. While his travels bring him past (and through) several saloons and gambling halls, he nevertheless "believes in religion, morality, honesty, industry, friendship and sociability, and you will find an abundance of these in his writings" (Editor's Preface). Wright also takes time to visit local spots of historic appeal and natural beauty, including Brigham Young's grave and the recently-created national parks of Yellowstone and Yosemite. OCLC records only three copies, at the Indiana Historical Society, Indiana State Library, and the University of Tennessee. OCLC 21362072.

WOLF, Hugo 1860-1903
On a postal card. Dated Vienna, October 20, 1893. In black ink. In German (with translation). Wolf writes to conductor Siegfried Ochs suggesting Gesang Margits from Das Fest aus Solhaug (1891) for his concert. "It just occurred to me that you could take Margit's Song from the Festival at Solhaug into the program. If you like the piece and think it is effective, you'd have a soprano piece. Of course, I'd be happy if you could include another one of the songs, one of the ones that I suggested in my last letter..." Slightly worn and browned. Wolf experienced a great deal during his turbulent life, but was lucky to have a number of supportive friends and colleagues that helped him as much as they were able. In the 1890s, Wolf was coming down from a high point in his career with the success of his Mörike-Lieder and Eichendorff-Lieder. One of his advocates at the time was the conductor Siegfried Ochs (1858-1929), director of the Berlin Philharmonic Choir. In Ochs, "... Wolf found a kindred spirit. Ochs, the greatest choral conductor of the time, was also an extremely entertaining and witty companion, and Wolf much enjoyed his gift of musical parody, even when he found himself the victim of it." Walker: Hugo Wolf, p. 307. Ochs was arranging a concert in Berlin to feature Wolf's orchestral arrangements of his Elfenlied (arr. 1891) and Der Feuerreiter (arr. 1892). In the present letter, Wolf suggests the Gesang (or Ballade) Margits from his incidental music for Ibsen's Das Fest aus Solhaug. Lewis Carroll
ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND This sale is for an original 1893 FIRST EDITION of "THROUGH THE LOOKINGGLASS" by Lewis Carroll. YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK!!! It is filled with 50 ILLUSTRATIONS!!! by the original "Alice" artist, Sir JOHN TENNIEL. It also includes a beautiful FULLCOLOR FRONTIS and four additional Black and White CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS!!! This book is the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. There are many mirror themes in the story, including opposites, time running backwards, and so on. Whereas the first book has a deck of cards as its theme, this book is loosely based on a game of chess, played on a giant chessboard with fields for squares. Alice ponders what the world is like on the other side of a mirror, and to her surprise, is able to pass through to experience the alternate world. She discovers a book with lookingglass poetry, "Jabberwocky," which she can read only by holding it up to a mirror. Upon leaving the house, she enters a garden, where the flowers speak to her and mistake her for a flower. There, Alice also meets the Red Queen, who offers a throne to Alice if she just moves to the eighth rank in a chess match. Alice is placed as the White Queen's pawn, and begins the game by taking a train to the fourth rank, since pawns in chess can move two spaces on the first move. She then meets Tweedledum and Tweedledee, of whom she knows from the famous nursery rhyme. After reciting to her the long poem, "The Walrus and the Carpenter," the two proceed to act out the events of their own poem. Alice continues on to meet the White Queen, who is very absent … [Click Below for Full Description]
