Hardy, Thomas
1893. One page (first of four leaves folded). On "Vice Regal Lodge, Dublin" stationery, undated (but May 1893). The text of this letter reads: I have much pleasure in accepting your kind invitation but I feel certain that we who join you will get the best evening, unofficial though we may be. Yours sincerely [signed] Thomas Hardy. Although the letter is undated, the stationery provides us with the necessary clue -- for it was in May 1893 that Thomas and Emma Hardy made a fortnight-long journey to Dublin, where they stayed primarily at the Vice Regal Lodge. The Vice Regal Lodge (today it is Áras an Uachtaráin, the residence of the President of Ireland) was then the official residence of the lord lieutenant of Ireland, who for less than a year had been Lord Houghton, writer of some minor verse, who was the son of a good friend of the Hardys. "Mrs Jekyll" was the wife of Col. Herbert Jekyll, the private secretary to John Morley -- the Chief Secretary (second in hierarchy under Houghton); Hardy briefly refers to her in his day-by-day account of the trip in THE LIFE OF THOMAS HARDY (p. 263), for May 24th: "We dined this evening at the Private Secretary's Lodge with Mrs Jekyll." (According to Sir Neville Lyttelton, while in Dublin Mrs Jekyll was the "reader" of Viscount Wolseley's manuscript of his Life of Marlborough, which would be published in 1894.) Hardy's acceptance of Mrs Jekyll's invitation includes the self-effacement that turns up in so much of his correspondence. The most important aspect of this trip was that Thomas Hardy met Florence Henniker … [Click Below for Full Description]

BEARDSLEY, Aubrey; MALORY, Sir Thomas
Dent London -1894, 1893. First edition. Twelve original parts, each in original green paper wrappers with design by Beardsley in brown to the upper covers. Housed in publisher's black cloth boxes blocked in gilt to spine and upper covers to match the blocking for the books. A near fine set with trivial wear to some of the oversized parts of the wrappers and a little light chipping to the paper at the head of the spine on part III, but is an exceptionally well preserved set, seldom encountered in its original wrappers. Two photogravure frontispieces and eighteen full page wood engravings (including five double-page), numerous text illustrations, and approximately 350 designs for chapter headings and borders, all by Aubrey Beardsley. The classic combination of Aubrey Beardsley's distinctive drawings and the Arthurian legend. One of the most iconic books of the fin de siècle. The young Beardsley was a regular at London's antiquarian book shops, where he forged a friendship with shop owner, Frederick Evans who introduced him to the publisher J.M. Dent. Dent was planning a beautifully illustrated version of Malory's Morte D'Arthur, along the lines of some of Morris's Kelmscott Press books, but using a less expensive printing process. Loath to pay the elevated fee William Morris would charge for this commission, and impressed by Beardsley's sample piece, "The Achieving of the Sangreal" (used as the frontispiece in this work), Dent was persuaded to employ Aubrey Beardsley with "everything to do for the book". The work was issued by subscription in twelve parts between June 1893 an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Douglass, Ferederick
Boston: De Wolfe Fisk and Co, 1893. "New Revised Edition". 752pp. Thick 8vo. Original publisher's brown/maroon cloth. Fine. "New Revised Edition" 752pp. Thick 8vo. Scarce in this condition; what has been called Douglass's "fourth" autobiography, but may be considered an expanded or revised edition of his final memoir, the 1881 Life and Times of Frederick Douglass. The present work adds events in Douglass's life, from ca. post-1881 onwards. The concluding chapters are primarily concerned with the role of Frederick Douglass in the final years of his life as Consul General to Haiti, but prior to his death in death, in 1895. Brignano: "The 1892 [sic, 1893] edition of his autobiography adds reports of his European and Middle Eastern journeys of 1886-1887, and of his responsibilities as minister to Haiti from 1889." Life and Times of Frederick Douglass "did not excite the admiration of reviewers or sell widely, as had his first two autobiographies, But the Life and Times maintained Douglass's conviction that his had been a 'life of victory, if not complete, at least assured.' Life and Times shows Douglass dedicated in the ideal of building a racially integrated America in which skin color would cease to determine an individual's social value and economic options." Winchester, Albert Edward
Ithaca & Brooklyn, NY: 1880-1893. From the Electrical World and Engineer, volume XLVI, no. 14 (September 30, 1905): "Albert Edward Winchester of New England and southern ancestry was born April 19, 1867 at Marietta, Ohio. His father Theodore H. Winchester, deceased, was an editor and artist, and an inventor of printing appliances. His mother, Anna Maud Jackson, was an educator and a worker in various lines of literature. His early education was received in Ithaca and New York City. At the age of 14 he accompanied his mother to Mexico and there being no suitable schools for American youth in those days, and having already developed a strong inclination toward constructive mechanics, he became an apprentice in the motive power department of the Mexican Central Railroad which was then being built to the United States." The early letters dated 1880-1885 are those of a tender teenager showing much affection towards his mother, and displaying an early talent for penwork and illustration. He notes in one that he now weighs 120 pounds. "Don't you think I am too big to cuddle up in your lap as I used to do? I think if I was with you I would reverse the case and call you my baby, that is if Mr. Dennie would not get jealous, because I am afraid he would have a great cause to be so, as I don't think there would be much left of you after I had got done kissing and hugging you." The illustrations on the early letters consist of steamboats and trains, birds, dogs, ducks, castles and churches, but by 1886, when he is writing to his future wife, the penwork has matured considerably and show … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pierre: Pierre Journal, printers, 1893. Good.. 16pp. Original light red printed wrappers, stapled. Lightly creased and soiled, several small chips and tears. First and last page stained pink from wrappers. Rare promotional work for Hughes County, South Dakota, located (as indicated in the title) in the center of the state, and including the capital of Pierre. The work includes the usual information about local agriculture and industry, as well as sections detailing each town -- Pierre, Blunt, Canning, and Harold. For a promotional work, it is unusually frank and honest about the living situation in the area. A section headed "Who Should Come?" exhorts the reader to emigrate only if industrious and willing to put up with some hardships at the moment: "No person is advised to come and settle here who is not willing to put up with some privations, or who expects to live and grow wealthy by slothful or indolent habits. This is a climate that instills energy and industry in a man, and no one is wanted here who is not capable of doing his part in the great work of civilization." This work sold for $75 in the Streeter Sale in 1968. We locate fewer than ten copies in OCLC. Streeter Sale 2086.

1893. ***Copy of photos, personal formats, graphics, or text is prohibited. Ebay may drop listings with infractions. I review content regularly. Deluxe Limited Editions Tales of Hans Christian Andersen Author: Illustrations by Arthur J Gaskin Description: This beautiful re-creation of the 1893 edition is limited to only 400 hand numbered copies. There have been a number on the market due to an influx of downsizing belongings in the American household and a change of generational collectors. But this edition will once again become a near impossible get sometime in the future. It features all 100 of the original illustrations by Arthur Gaskin. The leather is the rich, white, almost glove like leather seen on numerous Easton Press white leather Deluxe Editions. A beautiful oversized edition at over 10" tall! --- Arthur Gaskin belonged to the Arts & Crafts movement similar to William Morris and in my opinion the influence and similarity is obvious, drawing on medievalism, the Pre-Raphaelites, and Neogothic stiles. That would also include some similarity to Edward Burne-Jones. My own set resides next to my several editions of Kelmscott Chaucer. Note that photography of all-white subjects, particularly in shiny plastic, is somewhat difficult for a camera moron like me. My photos don't really do it justice! Condition: SEALED in original plastic, with original shipping box. This Fine Leather Book Features: Top grade, gold embossed/ornamented leather Gilded page ends to protect against dust and moisture Decorative end papers Acid neutral archival paper to last generations.

Brignano: "The 1892 [sic, 1893] edition of his autobiography adds reports of his European and Middle Eastern journeys of 1886-1887, and of his responsibilities as minister to Haiti from 1889." Life and Times of Frederick Douglass "did not excite the admiration of reviewers or sell widely, as had his first two autobiographies, But the Life and Times maintained Douglass's conviction that his had been a 'life of victory, if not complete, at least assured.' Life and Times shows Douglass dedicated in the ideal of building a racially integrated America in which skin color would cease to determine an individual's social value and economic options." Très rare.« En 1875 [Pouget] crée le premier syndicat des employés du textile parisien. [Girls' Education] Elizabeth "Lizzie" Schuh
[Wisconsin], 1893. Hawthorne Composition Notebook #774 measuring 8.25 x 6.75". Comprised of 70 densely written pages largely in pencil in a single hand, with penmanship maturing as pages go on across three years. Lizzie's ownership signature to the front wrap designates her as 12 years old at the start of her composition in January 5, 1891. Resulting genealogy research has identified her as Elizabeth Lizzie Schuh born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1879. Census records show that she remained in this area through the end of her life. She composes short essays; in the beginning these tend to focus on some piece of nature, such as bees or oranges, and they incorporate natural science as well as geographical information. Later essays include original short stories and reports on American figures including Daniel Boone and Andrew Jackson. As she progresses, her compositions and her hand m … [Click Below for Full Description]
