The stories were supposed to have been told by ten old women during five days, to a Moorish slave who had taken the place of the true princess" (Brewer's Dictionary). Throughout his career as a translator, Burton relished bringing to print works from around the world that contained lusty content and controversial use of language. One of the foremost linguists of his time, Burton was also an outstanding explorer, poet, translator, ethnologist, and archaeologist. Notably, Burton's translation was one of a group of manuscripts that Lady Isabel Burton deemed sufficiently innocuous to escape the notorious burning that she undertook of her husband s writings after his … [Click Below for Full Description]

[HAWAII].
VI, [2 blank], 56 pp.The 56-page issue, plus index, of the first edition of Hawaii's last constitution as a sovereign country, containing 103 numbered articles. When in 1893 Queen Liliuokalani of Hawaii was overthrown, she was replaced by a provisional government consisting of members of the American Committee of Safety, striving to achieve annexation of Hawaii to the United States of America. When annexation was not forthcoming they set up a constitutional convention and adopted the present constitution for the Republic of Hawaii. The annexation was finally ratified four years later, the transfer of sovereignty taking place in August 1898. "The present constitution is among the more important pieces of literature pertinent to these times" (Streeter).Forbes notes that page 56 is unnumbered and blank ("[56] blank"), but in this copy it is numbered and contains the last names of the members of the constitutional convention. The present copy includes the 6-page index, often lacking. With a library stamp on front wrapper, the spine of the wrapper reinforced. A very good copy.l Forbes 4569 (55-page issue); Streeter 3766 (55-page issue); cf. A.F. Lee, The Hawaii state constitution: a reference guide (1993), p. 5.

[4], 476; [4], 482 pp.First and only edition in German of a richly illustrated travelogue of a journey around the Eurasian continent, made by the future Russian Czar Nicholas II. After the opening of the railway in Siberia, the travellers boarded the train back to St. Petersburg. After the return home, Nicholas and his fellow traveller Prince Esper Ukhtomsky began working on an account of their grand tour. After the publication of the Russian edition in 1893-1897, this very popular work was translated into English, French, German and Chinese. In very good condition with the bindings somewhat rubbed at the edges. A richly illustrated account of Asia in the late 19th century and Russia's relations with its neighbours.l Wenckstern I, p. 42 & II, p. 35.

OGAWA Kazamusa.
36 ll.First edition of a work with 35 hand-coloured collotypes, showing different Japanese temples and castles. The volume is one of many from Ogawa's collection of collotype albums entitled "Things Japanese", which were issued from 1893. Other volumes deal with Japanese costumes, flowers, geishas and several Japanese districts. In 1898 this volume appears to be reissued or reprinted twice, once with 35 and once with 37 plates, both with “of Japan” in the title instead of “ in Japan” (Baxley). Wenckstern probably refers to the 1898 edition (with “of Japan”) but notes 36 plates. Binding rubbed along the extremities and slightly scratched. Plates slightly browned with some occasional minor foxing. A good copy.l Cf. Wenckstern II, 9 (1898 (?) ed., 36 plates).

LOMBROSO, Cesare (1835-1909)-FERRERO, Guglielmo (1871-1942)
Torino-Roma, L. Roux, 1893. THE CRIMINAL WOMAN 8vo (242x154 mm). XI, (1), 640 pp. With the engraved portrait of Messalina on the title-page, 8 plates (4 folding) and several diagrams, photographs and statistical tables in text. Original (?) blue cloth, gilt title on spine (joints weakened). A good copy, only slightly browned, plate VI loose. RARE FIRST EDITION of this very influential work on criminal woman, considered as the first modern criminology text to exclusively focus on the subject. A first draft of the work, written in collaboration with Salvatore Ottolenghi, had appeared two years earlier in the "Giornale della R. Accademia di Medicina" (nos. 9-10). The final draft was written in collaboration with the author's son-in-law, the talented law student Guglielmo Ferrero. In Criminal Woman, Lombroso applies to women the same theories expressed in his Uomo delinquente ("Criminal Man'), published in 1876, the work that marks the foundation of criminal anthropology. In the text, he outlines a comparative analysis of "normal women" opposed to "criminal women" such as "the prostitute". Lombroso was convinced of the pathological nature of the born criminal (whom he distinguishes, medically and legally, from the casual offender who commits a crime driven by special circumstances or needs) and of the possibility of explaining and predicting moral degeneration from its physical abnormalities. According to Lombroso, there is a correlation between somatic and mental deformities with reference to specific factors as atavism, degeneration, and epilepsy. He believes that criminals a … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAYLE, Charles
London: David Nutt (1893). 8vo. 130pp. 1st Edition. London: David Nutt (1893). 8vo. 130pp. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Charles Sayle (1864-1924) was at the center of the Uranian group of poets and exchanged correspondence with quite a few of the 1890s group, including Oscar Browning, Edward Carpenter, John Gambril Nicholson and Ernest Dowson. This is his third collection of poetry and perhaps the most overtly Uranian in tone (with poems dedicated to Richard Barnfield and Ernest Dowson). Sayle graduated from Oxford with honors and became a bibliographer at the University Library in Cambridge, where he completed several treatises on the collections there. Timothy d'Arch Smith (Love in Earnest @ 80-81) relates an amusing story of a visit by Henry James to Cambridge in 1909 where he was entertained, rather unsuccessfully, by Sayle. One of 20 special copies on Japanese vellum, bound in full morocco, gilt edges, five raised bands on spine, marbled endpapers. Inscribed on front endpaper to Maud Luxmoore by the author in 1899. The book is in very good condition, some sunning to leather, several small light stains, light foxing to front and rear endpapers. [Attributes: First Edition]

Octavo, 14 volumes, twelve portrait frontispieces and six plates, bound in three quarters morocco with each binding signed by Nikolai Trukhachev, principal binder for the Konstantinovich family from 1901 to 1915, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers. Prince Johan, was the eldest son of Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich of Russia by his wife, Yelizaveta Mavrikievna, nee Princess Elisabeth of Saxe-Altenburg. He was described by contemporaries as a gentle, religious person, nicknamed "Ioannchik" by his relatives. He was born as a Grand Duke of Russia with the style Imperial Highness, but at the age of 9 days, a Ukaz of his cousin Emperor Alexander III of Russia stripped him of that title, as the Ukaz amended the House Law by limiting the grand-ducal title to grandsons of a reigning emperor. He married Princess Helen of Serbia on 2 September 1911, and Helen took the name Princess Yelena Petrovna of Russia. [ANARCHISM] TUCKER, Benj[amin] R[icketson]
New York: Benj. R. Tucker, 1893. First Edition. Hardcover. Perhaps the clearest exposition ever published of individualist anarchism, written by the movement's foremost exponent in America. The work is comprised of selections from Tucker's voluminous, incisive, often acidic articles in his long-running journal Liberty. These are arranged thematically, in chapters such as "The Individual, Society, and the State;" "Money and Interest;" "Land and Rent;" "Socialism;" "Communism;" etc. Tucker, who had a reputation for not questioning the fallibility of his own ideas, clearly intended the book to be used as a sort of "Bible" of anarchism, a notion alluded to in Paul Avrich's 1973 interview with Tucker's daughter Oriole, who stated, "...the whole family lived an anarchistic life. When I asked a question - like how in the world would we get along without police - Father would say look it up on page so and so of Instead of a Book..." (Avrich, Anarchist Portraits. Princeton: 1988 p.151).There was a second edition in 1897, on noticeably inferior paper (the 1893 edition bulks a full quarter inch thicker); the first edition somewhat scarce in commerce, especially in such nice condition. 1893. ***Copy of photos, personal formats, graphics, or text is prohibited. Ebay may drop listings with infractions. I review content regularly. Deluxe Limited Editions Tales of Hans Christian Andersen Author: Illustrations by Arthur J Gaskin Description: This beautiful re-creation of the 1893 edition is limited to only 400 hand numbered copies. There have been a number on the market due to an influx of downsizing belongings in the American household and a change of generational collectors. But this edition will once again become a near impossible get sometime in the future. It features all 100 of the original illustrations by Arthur Gaskin. The leather is the rich, white, almost glove like leather seen on numerous Easton Press white leather Deluxe Editions. A beautiful oversized edition at over 10" tall! --- Arthur Gaskin belonged to the Arts & Crafts movement similar to William Morris and in my opinion the influence and similarity is obvious, drawing on medievalism, the Pre-Raphaelites, and Neogothic stiles. That would also include some similarity to Edward Burne-Jones. My own set resides next to my several editions of Kelmscott Chaucer. Note that photography of all-white subjects, particularly in shiny plastic, is somewhat difficult for a camera moron like me. My photos don't really do it justice! Condition: SEALED in original plastic, with original shipping box. This Fine Leather Book Features: Top grade, gold embossed/ornamented leather Gilded page ends to protect against dust and moisture Decorative end papers Acid neutral archival paper to last generations.

Rilke, Rainer Maria, Schriftsteller (1875-1926).
[Click Below for Full Description]

One of the foremost linguists of his time, Burton was also an outstanding explorer, poet, translator, ethnologist, and archaeologist. Notably, Burton's translation was one of a group of manuscripts that Lady Isabel Burton deemed sufficiently innocuous to escape the notorious burning that she undertook of her husband s writings after his dea … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANARCHISM] TUCKER, Benj[amin] R[icketson]
Benj. R. Tucker, New York, 1893. Tucker, who had a reputation for not questioning the fallibility of his own ideas, clearly intended the book to be used as a sort of "Bible" of anarchism, a notion alluded to in Paul Avrich's 1973 interview with Tucker's daughter Oriole, who stated, ".the whole family lived an anarchistic life. When I asked a question - like how in the world would we get along without police - Father would say look it up on page so and so of Instead of a Book." (Avrich, Anarchist Portraits. Princeton: 1988 p.151). There was a second edition in 1897, on noticeably inferior paper (the 1893 edition bulks a full quarter inch thicker); the first edition somewhat scarce in commerce, especially in such nice condition. NURSEY-BRAY (Anarchist Thinkers & Thought: An Annotated Bibliography) 928. Octavo. Publisher's blue-gray cloth boards, lettered in gilt on spine; blind-stamped decorative borders to front board; red edge-stain; frontispiece portrait; x,[1]-512,[1]pp. A tight, fresh copy, lightly rubbed at joints and extremities and with a brief marginal tissue repair to pp.249/250 (not approaching text); Very Good or better, with the publisher's edg … [Click Below for Full Description]

Three-quarter leather and cloth boards. Backstrip missing, but boards still holding firm; rubbing and wear to extremities. Some rumpling and curling to pages, ink bleed (heavy at times), a few small tears to leaves, several small tears or holes due to ink burn, occasional mild spotting and foxing. Good. A comprehensive look at the operations of a major import/export company in the Caribbean for the first part of 1893. J. Sala & Co. was a large international firm headquartered in New York that did business of all kinds throughout the Caribbean, in particular Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti, but also Cuba, Jamaica, St. Thomas, St. Croix, and Curaçao. In DELMAR'S...TRADES DIRECTORY (1889-90) they are listed in San Juan, Puerto Rico as "Ship Brokers and Commission Merchants." In THE PORT OF NEW YORK... (1893-94), their entry describes them as "General Commission Merchants," Juan Sala and Cosme Batlle are listed as agents. They also provided banking and finance services, in particular in partnership with Batlle, a Spanish merchant and banker, one of the wealthiest men in the Dominican Republic, and a chief creditor to dictator Ulises Heureaux. As this book only covers only January through part of March, 1893, one gets a sense of the extent of the firm's activities. 1893. (aucu … [Click Below for Full Description]

BROWNE, Edward G.
London: Adam and Charles Black, 1893. Octavo. Original moderate blue diaper-grain cloth, gilt-lettered spine and front cover, black-coated endpapers. Bookplate of Otto Burton Rupp (1877-1962), lawyer, and with his neat ownership inscription at head of a preliminary blank. Front inner hinge cracked but firm, short closed tear to map. A very good copy, bright and square. Folding coloured map frontispiece showing the region and the author's route, by W. and A. K. Johnston. First edition, "among the foremost classics of travel in English literature remarkable for [its] sympathetic portrayal of aspects of Persian society which few, if any, Europeans had ever seen, including a frank account of the effects of opium" (ODNB). Edward Granville Browne (1862-1926) was the preeminent Persian scholar of his day, a brilliant conversationalist and an inspiring and generous teacher. This book is based on his only visit to the country that fascinated him throughout his life, an eleventh month stay between October 1887 and September 1888, during which he visited Tabriz, Tehran, Esfahan, Shiraz, Yazd, and Kerman, "avoiding European society as much as possible, and throwing himself with ever-increasing interest into the company of Persians, mystics, dervishes, and Kalandars, whose friendship and confidence he gained to a degree hitherto unparalleled" (ibid.). As the Encyclopaedia Iranica remarks, "Persians today still remember Browne as one of the great men devoted to their country and its people". [Attributes: First Edition]

1893. This is a nice, original bibliophile catalogue of the first exposition of La Libre Esthétique artist society in Brussels. Printed at Veuve Monnon, Brussels. Printed in French on high quality hand-made Japan Paper. A very scarce item. La Libre Esthétique was an artistic society founded in 1893 in Brussels, Belgium to continue the efforts of the artists' group Les XX dissolved the same year. To reduce conflicts between artists invited or excluded, artists were no longer admitted to the society, thus all exhibitors were now invited. The first annual exhibition was opened on 14 February 1894, and the exhibition of 1914 was the last: a year later German troops had occupied Belgium, Brussels included. 1894 First exhibition, 17 February - 15 March 1894 Paul Gauguin showed five paintings, one from Martinique 1887, the others from his trip to Tahiti, 1891-1893. He even traveled to Brussels to assist at the opening, and published a review.[1] Another artist showing works at the exhibition was Eugène Laermans. Measures 5.5" x 6.5" and contains 56 pages. There is some mild surface discoloration to softcover wraps, slight wear at edges. Interior pages good, text sharp and clean. Please review photos and Email with any question. Truly a remarkable and extremely rare item ! We will be listing the program from the following year 1895 this evening as well. A great addition to any collection!

The first annual exhibition was opened on 14 February 1894, and the exhibition of 1914 was the last: a year later German troops had occupied Belgium, Brussels included. 1894 Second exhibition, 23 February - 1 April 1895 Odilon Redon showed five drawings, works by Grasset, Letrec, Beardsley and Redon present. Measures 5.5" x 6.5" and contains 66 pages. There is some mild surface discoloration to softcover wraps, slight wear at edges. Pages 51 through 58 loosened barely connected to string from spine, binding fragile. Interior pages good, text sharp and clean. Some tiny discoloration spots on last few back page corners. Two larger spots on back end paper shown with photo. Please review photos and Email with any question. Truly a remarkable and extremely rare item !
