        The Art of Golf

Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1892. _. Half Leather. Very Good. _. Half Leather. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 2nd edition. Complete with 186 pages, all 20 photographic plates, and 2 pages of advertising in rear. Half-leather with marbled boards and endpapers. Spine has five raised bands with gilt rules and lettering. Sound binding with intact hinges. Clean pages with all photographic plates and the protective tissue for the title page. Cover has light wear with some minor discoloration along spine. Per Murdoch 699. "One of the great classic books of golf literature, it includes the first use of photographs to demonstrate the swing. . . . 'the most entertaining book ever written about the foibles of the human golfer. . . . indeed, fine golf literature.'" Simpson was the first to advance the idea that golf originated from bored shepherds striking rocks with their crooks, explain how the term 'links' was related to sheep herding, and note that the word 'putt' came from the idea of putting a ball (or rock) into a hole (or scrape) in the ground.         Lecons sur la pathologie comparee de l'inflammation, faites a l'institut Pasteur en Avril et Mai 1891.

. Paris, Masson 1892, 8°, XI, (1), 239, (1) pp., 3 farblith. Tafeln, orig. Halbleinenband.. First and the original edition of Elie Metchnikoff's classic lectures on the pathology of inflammation! - - Russian zoologist and microbiologist Elic Metchnikoff (1845-1916) received (with Paul Ehrlich) the 1908 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his discovery in animals of amoeba-like cells that engulf foreign bodies such as bacteria-a phenomenon known as phagocytosis and a fundamental part of the immune response. - In Messina, Italy (1882-86), while studying the origin of digestive organs in bipinnaria starfish larvae, he observed that certain cells unconnected with digestion surrounded and engulfed carmine dye particles and splinters that he had introduced into the bodies of the larvae. He called these cells phagocytes (from Greek words meaning "devouring cells") and named the process phagocytosis. - Working at the Bacteriological Institute, Odessa (1886-87), and at the Pasteur Institute, Paris (1888-1916), Metchnikoff contributed to many important discoveries about the immune response. Perhaps his most notable achievement was his recognition that the phagocyte is the first line of defense against acute infection in most animals, including humans, whose phagocytes are one type of leukocyte, or white blood cell. This work formed the basis of Metchnikoff's cellular (phagocytic) theory of immunity (1892), a hypothesis that engendered much opposition, particularly from scientists who claimed that only body fluids and soluble substances in the blood (antibodies) -and nor cells - destroyed invading microorganisms (the humoral theory of immunity). Although the humoral theory held sway for the next 50 years, in the 1940s scientists began to reexamine the role cells play in fighting off infections. Eventually Metchnikoff's theory of cellular immunity was vindicated when aspects of both schools of thought became integrated in the modern understanding of immunity." Kara Rogers (Ed.), The Cell (2011), pp.51-53 - - "Inflammation was once regarded as a harmful or disease process, not a normal protective response. The associated heat, pain, and discomfort might cause an affected person to agree. However, Elie Metchnikoff placed the process in its correct biological position by a careful series of phylogenic studies establishing its origin and evolutionary development. Immunity and inflammation came together or, from the reverse perspective, originated with the mesodermal phagocyte. However immune mechanisms may vary among orders and phyla, the phagocyte is the common denominator. Indeed, aside from the controversial and limited antitoxins, these cells were the only general immune mechanism known when Metchnikoff presented his lectures summarizing the research from his and other laboratories. Through its positive and negative chemotaxis and its digestive granules, be it of sponge, frog, or rodent, the phagocyte was described as an active destroyer of living invaders, all obeying the evolutional laws of variation and natural selection. All other subsequently developed inflammatory activities of tissues were quasiindependent adjuncts. - Metchnikoff returned from the August 1890 meeting of the International Congress of Medicine in Berlin unshaken by the reports on specific bactericidal serum. The challenge of the December 1890 reports on serum antitoxins, however, needed a reply. (He first discounted their significance in vivo, since tetanus and diphtheria do not produce serous exudates.) To solidify his position and educate others in his zoological approach, Metchnikoff published his well-received lectures as a book, ... - - In his last lecture Metchnikoff completed his survey by considering immunity in humans. Seeing the concomitant and united evolution of all biological components of the organism, and with bold, sure mental brush strokes as in Zen calligraphy and painting, Metchnikoff merged immunity, neurons, and consciousness 35 years before his student Serge Metalnikov. Metchnikoff regarded the phagocyte as akin to a protist, the most rudimentary organismal mind-system, the anchor that leads across the aeons to the consciousness-mind of humans. He, therefore, accepted mind and consciousness as matter-dependent and emergent. For Metchnikoff, the evolutionary path of immunity spans from the phagocyte, the most primitive mechanism, to human-created applied medical science, the most advanced." Ebra Jan Bibel, Milestones in Immunology (1988), pp.170-173 - - Through Alexandre Piffault in October 2014, I became aware, that the assertion, that the Russian edition "Lektsii o sravnitelnoii patologii vospaleniya" is the Original Edition and that it was "translated into French in the same year", as quoted in Garrison & Morton No. 2307, is wrong , indeed this French edition published by Masson in 1892 is the original and first edition. - The lessons contained in this book were given in French at the Pasteur Institute in April and May 1891: 'Sauf quelques petites modifications, ces lecons ont ete publiees dans la forme qui leur a ete donne dans le cours fait en avril et en mai 1891 a l'Institut Pasteur' p. 10." - Also Heinz Zeiss confirms this in his much enlarged and most comprehensive bibliography of Metchnikoff's work. - - see - Zeis, Heinz: Elias Metchnikow. Leben und Werk. Übersetzt und bearbeitet nach der von frau Olga Metschnikowa geschriebenen Biographie, nach Quellenmaterial des Moskauer Metchnikow-Museums und nach eigenen Nachforschungen (1932), p.105 - - Milestone of Immunology; Heirs of Hippocrates No. 2079; Garrison-Morton 2307 (Russian ed., 1892); Waller 6413; Lilly, p. 245; Bulloch, p. 260

Das Gesetz der Transformation der Knochen.

. Berlin, A. Hirschwald, 1892, Folio, XII pp., 1 Bl., 152 Seiten, mit 95 Abb. auf 12 Lichtdrucktafeln, breitrandiges Exemplar in originalen geprägten Leinenband; feines Exemplar a.d. - First Edition. Garrison & Morton, No.641 - In the law of transformation of bones, Wolff attempted to establish Culmann's hypothesis of the lines of force within the skeleton, and formed "Wolff's law", that "every change in form and function of a bone, or in its function alone, is followed by certain definite changes in its internal architecture and equally definite secondary alterations in its mathematical laws." - Hirsch V, p.986; Bick, p.99

        Outing Magazine: Volumes 21-25 (October 1892 -- March 1895)

New York: The Outing Company Limited. 1892-1895. Five bound volumes. Quartos. Three-quarter morocco with textured maroon boards, raised bands, and gilt spine lettering. About near fine, with rubbing at the extremities and some offsetting to the endpapers. The bound volumes contain 30 issues of this sporting magazine which began publication in 1882 as the Wheelman before changing its name to Outing and the Wheelman: An Illustrated Monthly Magazine of Recreation, then simply Outing until it ceased publication in 1923. The magazine published a range of fiction and nonfiction related to the sporting life, covering many popular activities of the day such as hunting, fishing, equestrian, and boating, as well as emerging sports such as ice hockey, football, and aeronautics, often with accompanying photographs and illustrations. These volumes are no different with scores of vintage photographs of late 19th Century football teams and three early illustrations from Frederic Remington. Football in particular was rapidly gaining popularity at colleges across the country despite -- or perhaps because of -- its violent nature. Included within these pages are more than half a dozen articles by Walter Camp, the father of American football. While most feature the Ivy League teams of Yale, Harvard, Princeton, and others, one article focuses solely on West Coast teams including Stanford and the University of California. An interesting window into American sporting life at the turn of the century and the early development of football. .

Rare Original Photograph of O'Neill as a boy, unsigned, oblong 8vo, with full signature on a small 12mo visiting card

      - The image shows the future playwright in full length profile, sitting on a rock, with pad and pencil as if he is about to sketch or write. He sits near a lake with a house visible at the lake's edge. The photo has been cropped at the top. On verso, docketed in pencil, are notations for further cutting of the image to remove unwanted margins from the central focus of a charming portrait of O'Neill as a boy. The docketing reads, "Eugene O'Neill 25 years ago." The photographer's stamp shows upside down at the top edge indicating to whom credit should be given when reproductions would be made. The photographer is Nickolas Muray (1892-1965) who had made other images of O'Neill as an adult. On the black bordered visiting card, O'Neill has crossed out his printed name and written his full name below. O'Neill's capacity for and commitment to work were staggering. Between 1920 and 1943 he completed 20 long plays and a number of shorter ones. His plays were among the first to include dialogue in American vernacular and involve characters on the fringes of society who ultimately slide into disillusionment and despair. O'Neill wrote one well-known comedy, "Ah, Wilderness!".

Deacon Brodie or The Double Life: A Melodrama in Five Acts and Eight Tableaux

      T. and A. Constable Edinburgh University Press. Second edition, revised, unpublished.. Wrappers a little soiled and worn; very good copy.. On the front wrapper is printed ?TO BE RETURNED / to W. E. Henley / Merton Place / Chiswick/ London.? Beinecke 59; NCBEL III, 1005. 8vo, original printed wrappers, 88 pages. The first two editions of Deacon Brodie were printed for private circulation only. It was not until 1892 that it was published for public distribution by David Nutt, together with two other plays written in collaboration by Henley and Stevenson. Deacon Brodie, an early work by both authors (it preceded Henley?s first book), is based on the story of Deacon William Brodie (1741-1788), an Edinburgh Town Councilman and respected member of the community who led a double life - one of public service and another of crime. Brodie's real double life was the inspiration for the fictional Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

London: Reeves & Turner, 1892. Third Edition with the Notes of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley n. Hardcover. 184 x 127 mm (7 1/4 x 5"). Two volumes. Edited by H. Buxton Forman. Third Edition with the Notes of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. PARTICULARLY FINE DARK BLUE CRUSHED MOROCCO, RICHLY GILT, BY SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE, covers with central gilt panel formed by multiple plain and decorative rolls, with cornerpiece clusters of three inlaid lavender morocco pansies, front boards with central inlaid cerulean morocco medallion stamped with the poet's gilt monogram, rear boards with lavender morocco medallion stamped with a gilt pansy within the quote "Pansies let my flowers be" (from "Remembrance"); raised bands, spine compartments gilt in a latticed pattern, DOUBLURES OF SKY BLUE MOROCCO, ONE OF THESE (at the front of the first volume) FEATURING AN IVORY MINIATURE UNDER GLASS OF SHELLEY FRAMED BY A LAUREL WREATH SET WITH SIX SEMI-PRECIOUS STONES, this portrait surrounded by a pointillé field punctuated by foliate sprays terminating in 46 white flowers, the other three doublures with rows of gilt floral and foliate stamps and a trio of inlaid white blossoms in each corner (the bindings with a total of 132 large and small floral inlays), ivory moiré silk endleaves, all edges gilt and delicately gauffered. In a (rather worn) felt-lined folding cloth box. Frontispiece in each volume, vignette title pages. A VIRTUALLY FLAWLESS SET IN A LUSCIOUS BINDING. This is a lovely and elegant set--with doublures of especially beautiful design--that provides an appropriate morocco covering for Shelley's poetical works, a body of literature graced with a lyricism Day asserts is "unmatched elsewhere in English verse in its ethereal, ideal beauty." While the notes of Shelley's wife, appended here, have aroused considerable denigration (she is accused, among other things, of making her husband's verse less political than it actually was), her editorial work is nevertheless professional and has remained an essential source for the study of Shelley's work. As Betty T. Bennett explains, "biographers and critics agree that Mary Shelley's commitment to bring [her husband] the notice she believed his works merited was the single, major force that established Shelley's reputation during a period when he almost certainly would have faded from public view." According to DNB, our editor, Henry (Harry) Buxton Forman (1842-1917) "channelled a general enthusiasm into a minute study of textual details, for which his careful and exacting temperament was ideally suited. His patient application produced impressive editions of Shelley," who was, along with Keats, his main literary interest. Our miniature seems to be a general copy of the portrait of Shelley executed in 1819 by Amelia Curran (d. 1847). Now hanging in England's National Portrait Gallery, it is one of very few contemporaneous likenesses of Shelley and serves as the chief source today for Shelley's countenance. One will find Cosway-style miniatures as good as the one here, but it would not be possible to find really lovely volumes like these in better condition.
