        Renascence

1891. Signed. CRANE, Walter. Renascence: A Book of Verse. London: Elkin Mathews at the Sign of the Bodley Head, 1891. Octavo, mid-20th century full crimson morocco gilt, raised bands, uncut. $2200.Signed limited first edition, English issue, number 23 of only 43 copies on Japanese Vellum signed by Crane, illustrated with 39 line designs by him, handsomely bound.Crane developed ""a much greater craftsmanship in the art of the book than any other contemporary artist"" (Houfe, 103). He created 39 designs for this volume of verse, engraved on wood and photo-engraved by Emery Walker and Arthur Leverett. Many of the poems reflect Crane's increasing involvement, from the 1880s on, in ""the politics of art"" and his conviction that ""the art of the people… would flourish only when the people were free"" (DNB). Mathew printed several editions of varying limitations; this one, the finest and most uncommon, consisted of 25 copies for England (with three additional reserved for Crane) and 15 for the United States. With erratum slip at page 33. Massé, 41-42. Fine condition.

Fine unsigned Tableau Vivant representing 'A Japanese Family' by Hughes & Mullins, (Duke of Connaught, 1850-1942, Son of Queen Victoria, Governor General of Canada) with his wife LOUISE MARGARET (Alexandra Victoria, 1860-1917, Daughter of Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia, Duchess of Connaught) and their daughters MARGARET (1882-1920, Princess of Connaught, 'Daisy', Crown Princess of Sweden) & PATRICIA (Princess of Connaught, 1886-1974, 'Patsy', later Lady Patricia Ramsay) & son ARTHUR (1883-1938, Major General)]

1891 - showing the family dresed in Japanese costume, the Duke and Duchess are standing and the Duchess is holding a parasol, the children are seated and standing next to them, stamped 'carbon print' on the verso, 10" x 8", no place, (Osborne, Isle of Wight) no date, circa There is a copy of this photo at Osborne. The practice of the Household performing tableau vivants over the New Year was revived some time after the death of the Prince Consort. There were normally several scenes, each representing a letter or word, followed by a final scene depicting the entire word. The Tableau often reproduced paintings - a particularly successful one being 'La Rixe' (The Brawl) after the painting by E. Meissonier which had been given to the Prince Consort in 1856. The scene was a quarrel in a tavern which Queen Victoria considered 'a truthful presentation of the picture'. They were not always so well received - a biblical tableau of Naomi and Ruth in 1888 was described by the Queen as 'not quite so successful as it might have been, owing to the ladies getting the giggles and shaking'. The Tableau Vivant photo is an unusual form of photography, which Queen Victoria had a passion for from the 1850s. This is one of the later ones which are more difficult to find as the majority of them have remained in Royal Collections. Princesses Helena Victoria and Marie Louise spent much of their year revolved around the Queen, which dates the picture to 1889 as the Princess Marie Louise was married to a German Prince the following year. The marriage did not prove happy and the Queen sent her an open telegram ordering her 'home to me'. From the collection of Lady Patricia Ramsay, daughter of the Duke of Connaught.

Contribute [to THE STRAND MAGAZINE]; The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, (all Doyle), Martin Hewitt, Investigator (Arthur Morrison), etc. Volumes I to X.

London: George Newnes, 1891-1895.. Large octavo, with illustrations. 10 volumes. Original magazine parts bound in half-yearly volumes of half speckled calf, gilt, edges speckled red. Some light occasional thumbing and marking within; externally fine. An attractive copy in a robust recent leather binding. Contains the first appearance of all the above mentioned Sherlock Holmes stories, plus 'The Adventure of the Cardboard Box' (vol.5, 1893) which was not published in book form until 'His Last Bow' (1917). Several of these Holmes stories feature far more illustrations (notably by Sidney Paget) than in book form, and in some (such as 'Cardboard Box ') the illustrations are exclusive to 'The Strand'. Doyle also contributes the historical caper 'The Exploits and Adventures of Brigadier Gerard' (vol. 8,9,10). The set also includes science fiction from Jules Verne; 'Dr Trifulgas' (vol 4, 1893), and 'An Express of the Future (vol 10, 1895). Volumes 7-8 feature the entire first series of cases for the consulting detective Martin Hewitt; probably the chief rival of Sherlock Holmes- indeed Morrison's ingenious crime stories were commissioned by 'The Strand' entirely due to an appetite for Doyle imitations. A superb literary magazine.

XXXI, S. 568. The Book of the Sixth American Chess Congress, containing the games of the International Chess Tournament held at New York in 1889

New York: Sixth American Chess Congress, 1891 xxxviii+490 pages with table and diagrams. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 7") bound in original red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and black chess pictorial to both covers. Limited to 500 copies. This is copy 88 issued to F M Teed of Brooklyn New York. (Betts: 25-26). 1st edition. Contains the report of the Congress Committee and all 432 games with notes by Steinitz. This was a 20-man Double Round Robin Tournament. One of the longest tournaments in history. In the first half of the tournament, draws were counted as a half point. In the second half, they were replayed once. Between the 38 regular rounds, 8 replay rounds, and 4 game playoff for first at the end, there were 50 rounds all told (!). Like the 4th Congress, this tournament consisted largely of foreign masters. The retirement of Captain Mackenzie seems to date from this time (though some sources credit him as US Champion until his death in 1891), giving the top American finisher some claim on being de facto US Champion. The top American finisher was Solomon Lipschutz, who finished in 6th Place with a score of +22-9=7 Condition: Corners bumped, soiled, spine ends and corneres rubbed exterior hinge cracked 1" at back head spine, Teed's gift inscription on title and individual who received the book name errased, some occasional internal soiling, spine sunned esle a good copy of a scarce item.. First Edition. Original Cloth. Good. Royal octavo.

Derrotero del Estrecho de Magallanes, Tierra del Fuego i canales de la Patagonia. Desde el Canal de Chacao hasta el Cabo de Hornos.

Santiago, Chile: Imprenta Nacional, 1891. Thick quarto, with 95 plates and coastal profiles (many folding and printed in smaller format); but a very good copy overall in later quarter calf over old marbled boards. Scarce pilot guide to the Straights of Magellan and the coastline of Tierra del Fuego, publishing the results of Chilean naval surveys conducted from 1888 to 1890. The book is notable for the extensive maps and profiles - some 95 in total - and is divided into four sections respectively treating the Straits of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, Patagonian channels, and a better route from Chacao Channel to Cape Horn. The author was a captain in the survey party, acting under instructions from the Ministry of Marine (which are provided in the preface to this volume). The intention of the survey was twofold, firstly to provide accurate charts and coastal profiles for shipping through these notoriously hazardous waters, and secondly, to assert Chilean ownership over remote regions contested by Argentina. Some moderate foxing and intermittent browning, as to be expected of paper stock of this nature, yet a most attractive copy overall.

        A Study in Scarlet

Ward, Lock, 1891 Published in 1891. Second English Edition, being the first fully illustrated edition. 8vo., pp. 224 + (24) catalogue. Printed on high quality paper. Bound in publisher's quarter scarlet cloth, gilt titles to spine, beige buckram boards titled in red, patterned end-papers. With several black and white in-text and full page illustrations. A very good copy with cracks to gutters. One name and date to the half-title page. Some browning to the spine. A little staining to the boards and wear to the edges. A very presentable copy indeed. The second edition has a printed leaf noting the edition as the 'Third Edition, Illustrated'. This is due to Beeton's Annual is listed as the first edition, therefore the 'first' edition of 1888 becomes their 'Second edition' and the second becomes the 'third'. The bibliography as set out above is correct; the Beeton 'edition' being an appearance, and not the first edition in bookform. The same rule applies to other Sherlockian titles such as 'The Sign of Four'.
