[Click Below for Full Description]

Poincaré, H[enri
Georges Carré, Éditeur, 1892. First edition. Hardcover. 8vo. [5], vi-xix, [1], 432, [2] pp. Quarter red leather over marbled boards, spine lettered in gold, sprinkled textblock, decorative endpapers and pastedowns; binding dates to early 20th century. Illustrated throughout by diagrams and mathematical equations relevant to the lectures. Part of the series, "Cours de la Faculté des Sciences de Paris: Cours de Physique Mathematique". SEP, "Henri Poincaré". MacTutor, "Jules Henri Poincaré". This volume contains a series of lectures Poincaré delivered at the Sorbonne on his work concerning thermodynamics. Known as "the last polymath", Poincaré contributed research to symbolic logic, calculus and differential equations, the three body problem (and subsequently Chaos Theory), non-Euclidean geometry, and is credited as a co-discoverer of the Theory of Relativity. The volume starts off discussing the first and second laws of thermodynamics (since it was published before the zeroth law was discovered), covering the conservation of energy and the stability of entropy in a system over time, which Poincaré calls la principe du Carnot ou de Clausius. His introduction to his lectures state that the students will study these principles and their immediate consequences. The lectures delve deeply into the physics of energy, heat, movement, entropy, and the experiments Poincaré conducted during his research. An important annal in the history of science and physics, difficult to find in the first edition. Near Fine. A Near Fine copy w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Harper, Frances E. W.
Boston: James H. Earle, Publisher, (1892.). Third edition. Hardcover - The most significant novel (the only one written for book publication, rather than for periodicals) written by Harper, one of the most important African American women writers of the 19th century. Harper, who was well-known as a lecturer, first against slavery, then for the freed people and for temperance, was also a very popular writer. In many ways typical of the Black fiction of this period, this novel features superheroes, both male and female. However, Harper (like her contemporary Pauline Hopkins) was unusual in that women's lives were put first - she reversed the image of the tragic mulatto heroine by creating a character who was a political and social activist - one who chose to be Black despite her light skin. She was also concerned with presenting a picture of slavery which revealed its harshness, in an attempt to counteract the revisionist images which were becoming popular late in the 19th century. Includes a frontispiece portrait, and an introduction by William Still. 282 pp. Bound in the original illustrated brown cloth with black lettering, this copy is near very good with overall edgewear to the boards and rubbing to the lettering on the spine. There were 3 19th century printings of this novel (the first in Philadelphia and the 2nd and 3rd in Boston) and all are scarce now.

Oliphant, Margaret.
London: Macmillan, 1892. Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) was born in Scotland. Her first novel, Passages in the Life of Margaret Maitland (1849) attracted the attention of both Charles Dickens and Charlotte Bront‘. She worked extensively for the publishing firm of BlackwoodÕs, becoming as she described it the Ògeneral utility woman,Ó sometimes contributing as much as one third of their periodical. In later life she became the friend of Thomas Carlyle. As the sole breadwinner responsible for an alcoholic brother and several children, she wrote constantly to make ends meet, and her publications numbered around ninety. At the end of her life, she regarded her work as generally a failure. Her tales of the supernatural, however, have recently been republished and are highly regarded. Tennyson, Gladstone and Darwin all praised her work. Three volumes, twelvemo. viii, 267; [4], 258; [4], 264 + 44 pp. publisher's catalogue. Publisher's green diaper cloth. Spine and covers stamped in gilt. Spines cocked, endpapers foxed, back hinge of Volume III cracked. A very good copy. First edition of a scarce book. This title eluded Sadleir, and OCLC lists six copies in American libraries. "The herculean fictional outputÉundoubtedly shows her ability to gauge changing fashion: the novels span social concern, Scottish tales, the Gothic, the sensational, the historical, provincial sagas, and quieter psychological studies. They equally reveal her as creator as much as creation of her literary milieu: the voracious reading involved in her twenty-five works of non-fiction and over three hundred period … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

1892. A Contemporary Opinion on a Sensational 1889 Murder by a Female Physician Densmore, Helen. [Maybrick Murder Case]. The Maybrick Case: English Criminal Law. London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co.; New York: Stillman & Co., [1892]. 148 pp. Octavo (7-1/2" x 5"). Stiff textured wrappers, gilt title to front. Some rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends and corners, front cover beginning to detach at ends, fading to edges of rear cover. Presentation inscription from author to front free endpaper, light toning to text. $750. * Only edition. In 1889 Florence Elizabeth Maybrick [1862-1941], a American-born socialite, was convicted for fatally poisoning her husband, James Maybrick, a Liverpool cotton merchant with a history of drug abuse. Despite scanty evidence pointing to her guilt and several procedural irregularities, she was sentenced to death. Public outrage led the Home Office to commute her sentence to life in prison. She was released 15 years later. This case attracted a great deal of attention and generated a large literature that includes Densmore's book. Densmore, a medical doctor, believed Maybrick was innocent and deserved a retrial. Written while Maybrick was in prison, her study argues that Mr. Maybrick poisoned himself. De verkoop van opium op Java. Open brief aan Dr. H.J.A.M. Nijmegen, H.C.A. Thieme, 1892. 4to. Half green cloth, marbled paper sides, title in gold on spine. 56, 71 pp. Address to H.J.A.M. Schaepman (1844-1903), the leader of the Dutch Catholics and first priest to become a member of the Dutch parliament in 1880 (Tweede Kamer). The author of the address, De Roo, a director of finance in Batavia, opposes Schaepmans new proposals to discourage opium farming (the existing opium pacht system). Opium farming brought in tax revenues and made the opium trade a monopoly of the Dutch Government. The government regulation was originally designed to limit opium consumption, but in practice did just the opposite. Schaepman favoured an alternative proposal: the so-called new "Regie" (new regulations), whose system for opium distribution was supposed to eventually diminish abuses and eliminate the Chinese from the profitable opium trade (keeping the enormous profits largely for the Dutch Government) by strengthening the Dutch monopoly so that they could keep the opium prices high. This, they argued, would diminish opium use and increase profits at the same time. With library stamps of the Colonial Dept. in The Hague ("Doublet") on title-page. Binding very slightly worn, some foxing in the endpapers, otherwise in good condition. James R. FISHER, Irving.
New Haven: Connecticut Academy, 1892. New Haven: Connecticut Academy,, 1892. Octavo, pp. 124. Original printed green wrappers, rebacked, front lettered in black. Housed in a drop-back cloth box. Printed "Compliments of the Author" slip tipped-in before title. Front wrapper chipped and sometime detached, now lined with archival tissue, with loss to head and inner margin now infilled, subsequent vertical fracture to rear wrapper, close to spine repair. Original offprint of Fisher's "startlingly original PhD thesis" (Blaug) which contained, among other things, the design of a machine to illustrate general equilibrium in a multi-market economy. This work expounds his monetary theories and established his international reputation. "Fisher's aim in his Mathematical Investigations, was to present a general mathematical model of the determination of value and prices. He claimed to have specified the equations of general economic equilibrium for the case of independent goods (chapter 4, sec. 10), although the only mathematical economist whose work he had consulted was Jevons. With commendable honesty he recognizes the priority of Walras's Eléments d'économie politique pure (1874) as far as the equations of the general equilibrium are concerned and likewise the priority of Edgeworth's Mathematical Psychics (1881) as regards the concept of utility surfaces. It appears that, although only a student, Fisher had independently developed a theory of general economic equilibrium that was identical to part of Walras's and included the concept of the indifference surface, one of the fundame … [Click Below for Full Description]
