DANTE AND HIS CIRCLE [LA VITA NUOVA; SONNETS, CANZONI, MADRIGALS, BALLATA]: With the Italian Poets Preceding Him. (100-1200-1300). A Collection of Lyrics Translated in the Original Metres by Dante Gabriel Rossetti

London: Ellis and Elvey, 1892. LIMITED EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 35 HAND-NUMBERED COPIES PRINTED ON LARGE PAPER of the New Edition with a preface by William M. Rossetti. A copy with fine Pre-Raphaelite provenance, the artist movement closely associated with Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Royal 8vo, in a very handsome arts-and-crafts binding of full black polished calf, the boards with bold gilt geometric framing, the spine with vivid gilt lettering within a design of four wide gilt ruled lines, t.e.g., the others untrimmed. xl, 403, [4 ad] pp. A very fine copy, essentially pristine and appearing to be entirely unused. A BRILLIANT COPY AND WITH FINE PROVENANCE. This copy bears on the limitation page a handwritten gilt inscription to artist and author Edward Clifford from Judge Advocate General Vernon Lushington. Lushington was a noted friend to artists, authors and activists, particularly those of The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the Arts and Crafts Movement who gravitated to the Working Men's College. In 1856, it was he who first introduced Edward Burne-Jones to Dante Gabriel Rossetti in his College rooms. Rossetti used Lushington's wife, Jane, as a model in 1865. Clifford, the recipient, is best known for his portraits in watercolor, and was associated with the Aesthetic Movement, with which Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones are most strongly associated. THIS ISSUE IS VERY RARE, BEING ONE OF ONLY 15 COPIES SUCH, SURPRISINGLY SCARCE AND AN IMPORTANT AND FINE COMPILATION. It contains, most importantly, Rossetti's English translation of Dante's LA VITA NUOVA (The New Life) which is considered by many to be the best English translation of the Italian Masterpiece. Many other important Italian poems of Medieval and Renaissance genre are translated here as well. Rossetti was an English poet, illustrator, painter and translator. He was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 and was later to become the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement. In addition to the new preface by the translator's son, William Rossetti, this printing also includes the original advertisement of 1874 and original preface of 1861.

THE JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE TO LISBON

      - BY HENRY FIELDING WITH INTRODUCTION AND NOTES BY AUSTIN DOBSON. [Vinheta com leão e âncora]. LONDON. PRINTED AND ISSUED BY CHARLES WHITTINGHAM & CO. AT THE CHISWICK PRESS. MDCCCXCII [1892]. This edition is limited to Five Hundred copies, viz; 25 in Japanese Vellum, numbered 1 to 25. 475 on Handmade paper, numbered 26 to 500. This is No. 241». [EN] Henry Fielding left with his wife for Lisbon in June of 1754, hoping to improve his health in a warmer climate. This daily journal of his voyage is a kind of 'novel without a plot' (Cross), reflecting his shifting moods. The preface, probably the last words that Fielding wrote for publication, is a delightful essay on the art of travel writing. Fielding died in Lisbon two months after his arrival. Two different editions were printed by William Strahan for Andrew Millar in January 1755, after Henry Fielding's death in Portugal. The demand caused by interest in the Lisbon earthquake in November led to unedited copies (apparently) put on the market. Frontispiece is William Hogarth portrait sketch of Fielding, engraved by James Basire. Titlepage with woodcut printer's mark of lion and anchor, with this design also used as a watermark in the paper. Owner's bookplate with the heraldic crest of Robert Walker. Rothschild 857.         Voyage à la planète Mars. Autograph manuscript in French, signed by Flammarion on last leaf

1892 - The Planet Mars-Author's Possibly Unpublished Autograph Draft Flammarion, Camille (1842-1925). Voyage à la planète Mars. Autograph manuscript in French, signed by Flammarion on last leaf. 4to. 3-16ff., in ink, rectos only. [Paris or Juvisy, 1892.] Loose sheets. Lightly creased, browning, slight soiling & chipping, but very good. Flammarion's signed autograph draft of what appears to be a popular article based on a section of his classic La Planète Mars et ses Conditions d'Habitabilité, published in 1892. Some of the text in our manuscript, particularly that on ff. 8 and 9, appears in the first volume of La Planète Mars, in the chapter titled "Changements actuellement observes" (pp. 547-578); however, the remainder of the manuscript's text varies widely from the printed book's, and appears to be geared toward a more general audience. La Planète Mars was the most comprehensive work on Mars to yet appear, and Flammarion's views on Mars dominated the field in Europe much as Percival Lowell's did in America (Lowell began his observations and writings in the mid-1890s, after Flammarion). The manuscript shows some revisions by Flammarion on most leaves, ranging from crossing out of a few words to the interpolation of several lines of text. A second editor has marked the text in a few places in the margin in plain and colored pencil, and the first leaf bears the pencil date July 28, 1944 in the upper margin. The first leaf is numbered 3 in Flammarion's hand; however, the title and beginning of the text occur on this leaf. Despite the presence of editorial markings, we have found no evidence that Flammarion's article was published. The date of this text is important not only for preceding Flammarion's great work on Mars, but also because it represents an early date in the acceptance of Mars's "canals," a supposed network of lines crisscrossing the planet (these lines are actually optical illusions caused by the human brain's tendency to impose patterns on visual data). First described by Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli in 1878, the Martian "canals" led to a great deal of popular speculation about the possibility of intelligent life on Mars, and became a staple of science fiction. It was not until the Mariner flights to Mars in the late 1960s that the notion of canals on Mars was finally put to rest. In the present manuscript Flammarion, referring to Schiaparelli's observations of 1877-86, accepts that the Mars canals exist, that they are not optical effects, and that they show variation linked with the seasons on Mars. Flammarion is cautious to say that one can use the term "canal" without it being the last word on the supposed structures' actual physical constitution. Flammarion considers the canals and their fluctuations the most "bizarre" feature of Mars, unlike anything on earth. He warns against applying physical terms appropriate to earth to Mars without more knowledge of the atmosphere of Mars. He writes that our knowledge of Mars might be comparable to that of a balloonist over Mont Saint Michel trying to explain the fluctuations in its appearance without any concept of tides. His examples of Martian features include the region of Lacus Solis and its affluents Ambrosia and Nectar which had disappeared from view although seen by Dawes, Lockyer and Kaiser in years past, and the Kepler Ocean. Flammarion states that it would not be completely absurd to consider that the canals could be the work of intelligence. He paints a poetic picture of evening on earth contrasted with morning on Mars, and speculates that if there were Martians, their intelligence would be superior to ours. He expresses the hope that Mars may provide the long-sought evidence of the "plurality of worlds," a subject on which he had written. His poetic conclusion to this article is very much in keeping with Flammarion's other persona as one of the first great writers of modern science fiction, with several novels to his credit.         The Diary of a Nobody. With Illustrations by Weedon Grossmith.

Bristol: Arrowsmith 1892. CLEAN COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Octavo, pp.vii; 300. Bound in publisher's decorated brown cloth, with title design blocked in blue, black and gold. Rear endpapers show advertisements. A delightful copy, very clean and fresh throughout excepting some browning at endpapers. Spine shows a lean, although binding remains tight. The Diary of a Nobody originally appeared in Punch Magazine, and chronicles the fictional Pooter family over 15 months of daily life. The novel has received great acclaim, and was highly influential in marking a shifting interest toward the 'common masses', in lower-middle class Londoners. The Diary appears in Waugh's classic, Brideshead Revisited - Lady Marchmain reads the novel aloud to comfort her family.

Epidemics, Plagues and Fevers, their Causes & Prevention, An early modern analysis of socioeconomic and hygienic aspects of disease prevention, Francis Albert Rollo Russell, 1st Edition 1892

Edward Stanord, London 1892 - An early 125 years old classic on pollution and health by Francis Albert Rollo Russell (1849-1914), the son of British Prime Minister John Russell, a scientist and environmentalist noted for his studies of London fog and smog, as well as the worldwide effects of the 1883 volcanic explosion on the island of Krakatoa in Indonesia. Fascinated but repelled by urban conditions, particularly the fogs and smog that affected London between the 1870s and 1890s. An environmental determinist with an anti-urban agenda, Russell was convinced that atmospheric pollution would exacerbate the predetermined drift of urban peoples toward social and biological degeneration. He was the uncle of the philosopher Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) on whom he had important influence. When Bertrand was still young, his uncle introduced him to eminent scientists and philosophers. Bertrand Russell later reported that his uncle treated him more as a collaborator than a child. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Majma' al-Amthal + Kitab Jamharat al-Amthal. TWO VOLUMES IN ONE.

Al-Matba'a al-Khairiyya, Cairo 1892 - Volume I: (2), 338 pp., 2 (contents) / Volume II: 1 pp., (contents), 380 pp., Arabic text within borders, browned paper, annotations in margins throughout, light foxing, tear at front fly leaf, hand written inscription on front fly leaf; newly bound, modern black hard back binding with gilt on spine, al-Matba’a al-Khairiyya, Cairo, 1310 A. H. / 1892. "Proverbs excited the interest of the learned from the beginning of Arabic literature, historians and philologists emulated one another in collecting and explaining them. Thus we find among the sources of the works that have survived to us the old historians and genealogists like ‘Awna b. al-Hakam, and Abu –L- Yakzan to whom with the great monographist Muhammad b. Habib, Zubair b. Bakkar and al-Maidani we owe most of the history and legendary material. Majma’ al-Amthal is one of the oldest works which has survived, containing 4,766 proverbs. Al-Maidani collected the material compiled by his predecessors in this work and expanded each section by an appendix on modern proverbs. Since then the work has been regarded as a standard work on the subject". (Brill’s First Encyclopaedia of Islam, 1913-1936, Volume 5, p. 409). The second text Jamharat al-‘Amthal was compiled by Abu Hilal al-Askari (d. 1005) and printed for the first time in Bombay 1306-07. It includes about 2000 mathal, arranged alphabetically according to the first letter. The author proceeds from Hamza’s work, whom he, being a purist, reproaches with having included too many "new ones", and accumulates the materials transmitted from his teachers, and their authorities in the madjalis; the only quotation in the name of Abu ‘Ikrama is missing in the latter book; he had taken care to tighten the innumerable philological and "historical annotations", rejecting amthal which were linguistically incorrect, occasionally distinguishing between al-mathal al kadim, al- muwald and al-muhadath. Al-Amthal in his collection are largely "literary ones" and have not in common any more with every day life in the streets". (The Encyclopaedia of Islam: fascicules 111-112, p. 823).

Women's Work in Astronomy at Harvard WITH the the three original spectrographs which illustrated the article

Boston, Massachusetts: New England Magazine Corporation 1892. First Edition. [1]-16 (prelims plus ads), [6], [139]-272, [2] + 19-64 (ads). The complete issue of the New England Magazine for April 1892. With original buff wrappers printed in red and black. Red spine lettering faded. Wear to the extremities, still a sound copy. Wraps. This issue contains an extensive article on pp 165-176 on women's work in astronomy at the Harvard College Observatory. The article is very interesting, noting that women have been involved inthree primary types of work: a) computing, based on the work of others, b) original deductions (not necessarily star-work), and 3) the Henry Draper Memorial work (a fund set up by Mrs. Anna Palmer Draper "in honor of her husband Dr. Henry Draper, who was a pioneer in the work of photographing stellar spectra." It notes that women had been involved at Harvard for some 20 years as computers, and paid on the same basis as men who were doing similar work in other departments. The balance of the article discusses the Henry Draper Memorial work, showing the rooms in which the women work, discussing the work done, and illustrating some of the photographic images the women routinely examine. This article is supplemented by what we believe are three photographic plates (if not exact, then very similar) provided to the magazine in order to illustrate the article. The plates are milk glass, with photographic emulsion on one side, framed in oak. Shining a light from behind illuminates the image, much as the women working on the process would have. These plates are rare in the marketplace, most residing in institutitional collections. The first plate is labelled (in the image) "Spectrum of Beta Aurigae"[ a variable star in Auriga constellation ] and includes two spectrums, one dated 1889, Dec. 30d 17h. 6 G.M.T. 1889, the other Dec. 31d. 11h. 5 G.M.T.". The second plate is not labelled [and is not a spectrum but rather, we think, a grouping of stars which moved during the exposure]. The third is labelled "Peculiar Spectra" and contains six spectra on the plate, each identified. Provenance: Skinner auction 2314, Lot 680 (2005) - auctions stickers left in place on objects. Very Good.
