John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1892 - 1892-1899 Wisden Rebound with Original Covers

1892. Hi, Today I am listing a set of Wisdens , all rebound with covers from a well travelled collector. J Kingsley Havers OBE QC son of Sir William Havers. The books have been to many places , mainly Botswana but also Kenya Belize and Gibraltar which are all listed on the bookplate. The books all tend to have worn bindings (some green some blue) but lovely inside. In detail, in this lot we have 1892 to 1899 Original Wisden Rebinds, all eight books with covers and photoplates within, apart from the 1896 in worn blue boards, 1896 in nicer blue boards, the ones in worn blue boards have some marks and some wear but the internal covers are in good order and contents very respectable. The 1893 and 1896 have loose photoplate and page xxxvi has 2/3rd of it missing in the 1893. A nice cheap set. Strategy 1. Would split. More information and pictures available on request and happy to offer some discount if purchased with other Havers Wisdens that I am listing today.

R.G. McLean, Toronto 1892 - Elizabeth Driver, in Culinary Landmarks, lists copies of this first edition in only four repositories (all in Ontario, some with 2 copies) and one private collection. Driver devotes over one and one-half pages to describing the first edition of this book and its compilers/editors, Margaret Taylor and Francis McNaught - see Driver, O58.1 (pp. 376-377). Rare indeed. 535 p. : ill. ; 18.5 X 12.5 cm. Remarkably complete and intact in hardcover, despite paste residue to covers from previous owner's superimposed/pasted plain paper cover which I have removed; both front and rear hinges holding though they are begining to crack; all pages present, including pages of adverisements; occasional pages show minimal spots of discolouration from use.

         The Spirit Lamp.

Oxford: for the proprietors by James Thornton,, May 1892 – June 1893. An Oxford Magazine without News. [Continued as: An Aesthetic Literary and Critical Magazine.] 15 volumes, octavo. Original wrappers (vol. I, nos. 1–6 and vol. II, no. 1 beige wrappers printed in black; vol. II, nos. 2–4 and vol. III, nos. 1–3 white wrappers printed in blue with Magdalen tower illustration; vol. IV, nos. 1–2 blue wrappers printed in black). Vol. II, no. 1 in the first state with no "Second Edition" to front wrapper (no priority: "only one impression was actually printed" – Mason). Housed in a green morocco-backed bookform slipcase with the numbers held in two cloth chemises. A few of the early numbers with some early repair to wrappers, some with recent light repair; otherwise general chipping to the extremities of the brittle first few numbers, the white wrappered numbers in much better condition though with some staples rusted, and the blue wrappered volumes in near-fine condition but for some small chips to the wrapper edges. Nonetheless an extraordinary survival in very good condition overall, with some numbers uncut. First edition, all published, in original wrappers, an extremely rare complete set. The Spirit Lamp, the Oxford "aesthetic" literary magazine edited by Lord Alfred Douglas, became over four terms the crucible of a radical Uranian culture, and was decried as an "unholy, decadent academy" in rival Oxford magazine The Ephemeral. The Spirit Lamp printed unguardedly homosexual poems by Oscar Wilde, then Douglas's lover, as well as pieces by other such notable decadents as Lionel Johnson, John Addington Symonds, Robert Ross, Max Beerbohm, Pierre Louÿs, and many others. The first volume of the magazine was issued in six numbers during Trinity term 1892, under the editorship of Sandys Watson. It was set up as "An Oxford Magazine Without News", mischievous and facetious, with articles and satirical poems published anonymously or initialled. To give a flavour: in one early number a piece entitled "Pneumatolampadomastix" imagines a board of authorities condemning the magazine, followed by a Mr Oscar Wilde contributing: "The writers are quite unintelligible, and will consequently never be found out", and the scene closed by Mr George Meredith: "Foolish Young Fellows!" The second volume was published in four numbers during Michaelmas term 1892, now adopting illustrated wrappers and beginning to print the identities of its contributors. Lord Alfred Douglas's first contribution was printed in the third number, in an extraordinarily impertinent essay on the dullness of dons: "Dons occupy in the University the same position as moral laws occupy in the Universe; that is why they are so tedious... Perhaps, after all, the real reason why Dons are so uninteresting, is that they stand out against a background of such intense interest and beauty that they appear darker and duller than they really are. However that may be, they remain the one dull thing in Oxford, the one commonplace in the romance of an exquisite life, the one harsh discord in the harmony of a perfect music. Let us forgive them, but forget that they exist". Perhaps due to the popularity of the piece, or the fact that Douglas had some literary cachet for being then in the full swing of an affair with the famous Wilde (they had met in 1891, introduced by Lionel Johnson, and had summered together in 1892, during which Wilde was writing A Woman of No Importance), Watson surrendered the ownership and editorship of The Spirit Lamp to Douglas. Thus, from the following number (vol II, no. 4) right through its two subsequent volumes (vol. III, nos. 1–3: 3 February–10 March 1893, Hilary term; and vol. IV, nos. 1–2, May–June 1893, Trinity term), Douglas began to include radical new content. The first number under Douglas's editorship was introduced by "The New Remorse", a powerful poem of homosexual awakening by Wilde which he, besotted, had written out for Douglas shortly after they had met: "Who cometh in dyed garments from the South? / It is thy new-found Lord, and he shall kiss / The yet unravished roses of thy mouth, / And I shall weep, and worship, as before". Douglas assumed that the poem had been written for him, though it had in fact been published four years earlier under the title "Un amant de nos jours". Douglas's printing of it on the front of his first editorial issue nonetheless signposted the magazine's new Uranian direction. Neil McKenna, in The Secret Life of Oscar Wilde, comments on the revolutionary aims and implications of the magazine under Douglas's editorship: "The Spirit Lamp advertised itself as a magazine for 'all who are interested in modern life and the new culture'. The 'new culture' was code for the new Uranian culture which Bosie, Oscar and many others wanted to see established... The primary aim was reform of the laws against gross indecency and sodomy, followed by a wish to win a winder social acceptance for men who loved men" (McKenna, p. 266). Wilde's other contributions in The Spirit Lamp were two prose-poem fantasies, first published here, "The House of Judgement" and "The Disciple", which were later reprinted in "Poems in Prose" in the Fortnightly Review, July 1894. Other notable contributions include Douglas's review in strident defence of Wilde's French Salomé as "a perfect work of art", and the first appearance of the famous French translation of one of Wilde's love letters to Douglas by Pierre Louÿs (to whom Salomé had been dedicated): "Hyacinthe adoré, hyacinthe! hyacinthe! / Car je veux voir toujours dans les bois syriens / Ton beau corps étendu sur la rose et l'absinthe". Of the creation and significance of the poem, Douglas later recollected: "I met Pierre Louÿs in London, while I was living with Oscar at the Savoy Hotel. Louÿs came several times to lunch and dinner with us. He wrote a sonnet for me, which I published in the student journal which I then directed at Oxford, The Spirit Lamp. It was a free version of a letter written to me by Wilde, which was then used against him by my father during the trial". Also included in the final volume is "The Incomparable Beauty of Modern Dress", one of the earliest published pieces by Max Beerbohm. Though individual numbers do very occasionally turn up, complete sets of The Spirit Lamp are of great rarity. The only time a complete set in the original wrappers was recorded at auction was in 1975 (presented for sale with the original manuscript of Louÿs's "Hyacinthe" poem, inscribed to Wilde, inserted; the manuscript alone was resold in 2010 for €39,150). Prior to that, there were two complete sets at auction in 1968, but both were bound up. Otherwise we can find none recorded. The slipcase of this set bears the bookplate of New York judge and collector Frederick Spiegelberg, who died in 1937.

The Kiautschou Bay Concession - Colonial German Qingdao

Kiel [Northern Germany], 1896-1899. Fair copy manuscript account written by Johann Heinrich Hermann Neubauer (born 1874) who was a volunteer in the German Imperial Navy, recounting his numerous voyages and service in vast corners of the globe including China, Japan, Russia, the Phillipines, Brazil and Patagonia, over a period of seven years, looking back to his naval training in April 1892 and leading up to December 1899. Especially captivating are the descriptions of China and South America. With frontis portrait photograph of the writer in navy attire, taken in Nagasaki, and manuscript dedication to adjacent leaf dated 18 December 1896 when he began the work. Text is in German. With tipped-in manuscript message by a Navy Captain on the stationery of the SMS Gefion pertaining to 13 July 1896, and a tipped-in German newspaper printed in Tsingtao 29 March 1899. 8vo. 271 in manuscript. Brown cloth boards, original endpapers. A pleasing naval memoire in a fine hand, centered largely on China. German imperialism is the distinct theme in this manuscript volume, which features naval service during the occupation of Kiautschou Bay, and foremost German colonial influence over Tsingtao as its primary East Asia trading and naval post, while offering detailed observations of the Tsingtao in particular. Up and coming German colonies in Brazil also appear in the journal as the writer served on a vessel sent to quell the Brazilian Naval Revolts (Revoltas da Armada) in Rio de Janeiro in 1893. A voyage was further made to Manila in an effort to secure German colonial possessions in the Philippines. Neubauer had just come of age when he joined the volunteer navy reserve in 1892, and through the service, his early adult years would be replete with adventure as he sailed around the world observing and participating in colonial Germany's foreign expansion and commerce, particularly in China. The present journal begins with a partial summary of his assignments with the Kaiserliche Marine (German Imperial Navy) from his training onboard the artillery ship SMS Mars, subsequent posts on the SMS Seeadler, the SMS Condor, the SMS Alexandrine, and finally being assigned to SMS Gefion in May of 1895. The volume's dedication suggests that he intended to write the full account of his voyages and overseas experiences upon his return in 1896, however, the contents continue beyond the dedication date and introductory resumé of sorts, reveal that he was quickly offered another post - to return to the East Asia Squadron in China with SMS Gefion. Following a briefing of his earliest voyages, some twenty-five pages describe his adventures with SMS Alexandrine in South America. In 1893 this vessel was sent to Brazil where the Revolta da Armada (Revolt of the Fleet), though not a direct attack, did threaten German interests. Here we find mention of Montevideo in Uruguay, Rio de Janeiro and surrounding settlements, Santa Cruz del Sol, Joinville and Santa Catarina in Brazil, Lima in Peru, as well as Patagonia. Fascinating observations are made, from the typical nineteenth century mindset, for instance, an encounter with "true savage Indians" in Patagonia. [After the Ragamuffin War of 1845, German immigration to Brazil resulted in the formation of new colonies, most significantly Blumenau in 1850 and Joinville in 1851, both in Santa Catarina state. Today these are among the wealthiest parts of Brazil and still retain a strong influence of German culture. By the end of the 19th century, 122 German communities had been created in Rio Grande do Sul, and many others in Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. Germans helped to establish a middle-class population in Brazil, a country that was formerly divided between slaves and their masters.] Continuing with SMS Alexandrine, the writer would find himself in Japan, the ship and her captain being commissioned to monitor the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895. Some ten or so pages are devoted to this mission, with frequent mention of Nagasaki where Chinese sailors had started a riot in 1886, and also Yokohama, a principal port town. In March 1895, Alexandrine was recalled to Germany and while en route, she stopped in Morocco to pressure local authorities into paying reparations for the murder of two German citizens. This part of the voyage is also described. The ship returned to Wilhelmshaven on 25 May 1895 and it seems that five days later Neubauer was paid off and home in Kiel. herlands, which he mentions, before returning to Kiel on 1 December.

A Book of Strife in the form of The Diary of an Old Soul.

London: Longmans, Green & Co., and New York,, 1892. New Edition. Duodecimo (167 x 79 mm). Contemporary olive morocco by Hatchards of Piccadilly, spine gilt on compartments with titles direct and fleuron tools, gilt rolled border to sides, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Extremities rubbed, covers tanned, front joint just starting at ends, hinges repaired, an attractive copy in very good condition. Pencil annotations to the text throughout. The autograph book of Ottoline Morrell (1873-1938), signed by the author and a near-comprehensive array of her Bloomsbury, bohemian, and aristocratic acquaintances. This is a new edition of George Macdonald's Book of Strife in the form of The Diary of an Old Soul (1880). It prints Macdonald's 366-verse poem on the rectos only, and was produced so that people could sign their names facing the verse representing their birthday. The printed Dedication is a poem by Macdonald explaining this: "Sweet friends, receive my offering. You will find / Against each worded page a white page set: - / This is the mirror of each friendly mind / Reflecting that. In this book we are met. / Make it, dear hearts, of worth to you indeed: - / Let your white page be ground, my print be seed, / Growing to golden ears, that faith and hope shall feed." The author has signed the dedication in this copy, and dated his signature to 1895. This copy derives directly from the Morrell estate by descent. We cannot say whether the book was hers when Macdonald signed it, though it is possible. The majority of the signatures attest to Ottoline's use of it as an autograph book through the Garsington glory days of the late 1910s and 20s, and into the 30s. However there are some early signatures of people who died before the First World War, such as Henrietta S. B. L'Estrange (1816-1904) and Hannah Pearsall Smith (née Whitall, 1832-1911, a prominent Women's Suffragist who became the mother-in-law of Bertrand Russell through her daughter Alys - the Bloomsbury writer Logan was her son). This copy must have been more to Morrell than a festschrift or visitor's book, for there is evidence that she travelled with it: on his 27 January birthday appears the signature of none other than Kaiser Wilhelm II, whom she met in his post-war exile in Holland while visiting her cousin Count Goddard Bentinck in 1932. As well as those mentioned above, the signatures include (but are by no means limited to): Herbert Asquith, Earl of Oxford (1852-1928, prime minister), Max Beerbohm (1872-1956) and his wife Florence Khan (1878-1951, actress), Elizabeth Bibesco (1897-1945, writer, socialite and daughter of Herbert Asquith), Augustine Birrell (1850-1933, Liberal politician and essayist), Mary (1900-1957) and her husband Edmund Blunden (1896-1974, poet), Maurice Bowra (1898-1971, classicist and critic), David Cecil (1902-1986, writer), Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977), Padraic Colum (1881-1972, writer) and his wife Mary (1884-1957, literary critic), T. S. Eliot (1888-1965), John Galsworthy (1867-1933), Robert Gathorne-Hardy (1902-1973, garden writer), Mark Gertler (1891-1939, Bloomsbury painter), Duncan Grant (1885-1978, signed twice), Florence Hardy (1879-1937, children's author and second wife of Thomas Hardy), L. P. Hartley (1895-1972), Ralph Hodgson (1871-1962, poet), Aldous Huxley (1894-1963), Sigurd von Islemann (1884-1952, Kaiser Wilhelm's right-hand man in exile, and diarist), Augustus John (1878-1961, signed twice), Crompton Llewelyn Davies (1868-1935, uncle to the Peter Pan brothers), Goldsworthy Lowes-Dickinson (1862-1932, Cambridge political scientist and philosopher), Desmond MacCarthy (1877-1952, literary critic), William Maclagan (1826-1910, Archbishop of York) and his son Eric (1879-1951, art historian and director of the V&A), Aristide Maillol (1861-1944, French artist), Violet Manners, Marchioness of Granby (1856-1937, artist and aristocrat, mother of Diana Cooper), Walter de la Mare (1873-1956), Leonide Massine (1896-1979, Ballet Russes dancer and choreographer), Hope Mirrlees (1887-1978, poet), T. F. Powys (1875-1953, writer), as well as his wife Violet and their son Francis, Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) and his wife Alys, Umberto Morra (1897-1981, Italian journalist and anti-fascist), Leo Myers (1881-1944, novelist), Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967), W. H. Smith, Viscount Hambleden (1903-1948, heir to and chairman of the family firm), Gilbert Spencer (1892-1979, artist and brother of Stanley), James Stephens (1880-1950, Irish poet and novelist), Lytton Strachey (1880-1932), Iris Tree (1897-1968, bohemian poet and model), Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939, Modernist art dealer), H. G. Wells (1866-1946), Victoria Wemyss (1890-1994, aristocrat and photographer), and W. B. Yeats (1865-1939). There are also numerous members of Ottoline's Anglo-Dutch family the Bentincks (which included Celia Glamis, 1862-1939, the grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II), as well as a number of Grenfells and many other miscellaneous aristocrats. In this rarefied, yet crowded, atmosphere, we also find Ottoline's nanny "Powie" and nurse Nina. This is a unique object - emblematic of inter-war high-society, and thoroughly representative of Ottoline herself, who is best remembered for the extraordinary people she knew.

         The Sign of the Four.

London: George Newnes, 1892.. [Detective Fiction]. SECOND EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.[4] 283 [1]. With a lithographic frontispiece by Charles Kerr. In publisher's original red cloth boards, re-backed to style with original spine cloth pasted over. Gilt titles and black border decoration to spine and upper board. Dark brown endpapers supplied. Reading lean, with moderate outer wear and a water stain to the top edge of the upper board. Good. The second of four full-length Sherlock Holmes novels, originally appearing in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine (Feb.1890). Doyle was reputedly commissioned to write the story following a dinner with the editor at London's Langham Hotel. Doyle later discussed this 'golden evening' in his autobiography 'Memories and Adventures' (1924).
