"This book, which is the result of three years' almost uninterrupted labour, of a journey of six months' duration to the country concerned, as well as a previous travel in adjacent regions, and of communications maintained ever since with the most qulified resident authorities in Persia, is issued in the not, I hope, vainglorious hope that, until superseded by a better, it may be regarded as the standard work in the English language on the subject to which it refers. When I went out to Persia in the autumn of 1889 as correspondent to the "Times", my immediate object was to furnish to that paper, in a series of communications, necessarily limited in number and length, a résumé of the political situation in the Shah's dominions.A the same time I porfited by the oppurtinity to collect a great deal of additional information, which it was out of my power to utilise upon that occasion, and to fill many graps of which earlier study had revealed the existence in the contemporary knowledge of Iran.It is the information thus amassed, and since supplemented by continuous investigation and correspondence, that forms the material of these volumes." Escudero, Vicente, dancer.- Georges-Michel, Michel (text)
1892. Unpaginated (10 pp. including covers) program for a dance program by Vincente Escudero (1892-1980), famed for his Flamenco performances, accompanied by Luisa Salas, including text by Georges-Michel, program of dances, and illustrations by Jean Crotti and Picasso. Sl. soiled, some small marginal tears in several places. Large 4to. Orig. illus. wrpps., a bit soiled, small tears at edges. Paris n.d. (1924). Extremely rare and somewhat fragile documentation of a celebrated performance featuring the famed Spanish dancer at the Théatre Courbe, a private and elitist venue known for its avant-garde productions. Escudero, famous for his presentation of De Falla's Three Cornered Hat and for his collaboration with the ballet starlets of his day, openly acknowledged Cubist and early Surrealist influences and incorporated them into his dances. The present performance apparently made great waves as a "Cubist-Flamenco" event at the time, and references to it abound in the literature on avant-garde dance in the 1920s. The cover and inner portrait are by Jean Crotti, both in a Cubist style, and the program lists Paul Poiret as the costume designer, Jean Metzinger as responsible for the décor, the "scène typique" by Charles Desage, and the music by M. Cliquet Pleyel. See an article by Nicolas Villodre, "Vicente Escudero et la Courbe", available on-line at Flamenco.web.fr, which discusses this event at some length. As of October 2014 WorldCat is unable to locate this work worldwide.

Doyle, A. Conan
1892. [a fine copy] Illustrations by Sidney Paget. In The Strand Magazine. London: George Newnes, February 1892. 16 pp preliminary ads + Brooke's Soap leaf + 4 pp [xvii-xx] terminal ads. Original light blue wrappers pictorially decorated in dark blue. First Appearance of the eighth Sherlock Holmes case, and possibly the best-known of all. It was one of four Sherlock tales that can be classified as a "locked-room" mystery. Helen Stoner is engaged to be married, and she fears for her life: her stepfather has just moved her into the bedroom where two years earlier, her twin sister (then just engaged) died a terrible death, screaming about a "speckled band." Doyle later said he considered it his best -- so good, in fact, that in 1910 he turned it into a successful play (published separately in 1912) -- which in turn was the basis for a 1931 film starring Raymond Massey. Also, in 1930 it was chosen as the premiere episode of William Gillette's radio broadcasts of Sherlock cases. (In October 1892, this and eleven other cases made up the book edition of THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES.) This is a remarkably fine, clean copy, with scarcely any soil or wear (a tiny smidge of wear at the foot of the spine). Extremely uncommon in this condition. Housed in one of the several hundred custom Strand slipcases that we purchased from bibliographer John Gibson more than three decades ago. Green & Gibson A10a-viii; also see A36a (the play). Littlewood, William Henry (1838-1919)
1892. Card stock. Very Good. Oblong, 18 by 22 cm. Manuscript map of Swiss route, following by 85 numbered loose leaves, all with typed text and 55 with charming original watercolors, most very bright (we have counted a few chapter heads when they have a pictorial element). The artwork is always beautifully composed on the page, with the typing worked around it. All content on the rectos. Also the front and rear of the cover are beautifully embellished with multiple watercolored pictures, including a Swiss lakeside view and a Dutch windmill, the several images seamlessly blended together while remaining also separate. The back cover shows a Swiss woman in traditional dress with a backdrop view of Interlaken, and additional decoration in the foreground, as a sort of framing, of butterflies. Paintings begin in England, as Littlewood embarks on trip, with a painting of Ely and Lincoln Cathedrals. Several paintings are of boats, including the steamer boarded to cross channel, and one of Antwerp. Beautifully depicted are sights in and around Lucerne, Tell's Chapel in Altdorf, Interlaken and the mountain meadows nearby, sights in Brussels, Rotterdam, Scheveningen, a Dutch beach resort, and especially in the last chapter, Littlewood captured the picturesque people of the area. Littlewood was a successful architect based in Manchester, England. As a student at the Manchester School of Art he received the Student's Silver Medal for Drawing and Painting in 1856, and he continued to exhibit his watercolors with some regularity in Liverpool and Manchester up until 1913.
Several paintings are of boats, including the steamer boarded to cross channel, and one of Antwerp.Beautifully depicted are sights in and around Lucerne, Tell's Chapel in Altdorf, Interlaken and the mountain meadows nearby, sights in Brussels, Rotterdam, Scheveningen, a Dutch beach resort, and especially in the last chapter, Littlewood captured the picturesque people of the area. Littlewood was a successful architect based in Manchester, England. As a student at the Manchester School of Art he received the Student's Silver Medal for Drawing and Painting in 1856. Later he was a partner in an architectural firm that had a robust practice with public commissions as well as a st … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thoreau, Henry David
1892. Edited by H.G.O. Blake. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1892. Original dark green cloth with facsimile signature in gilt, beveled. First Edition, which consisted of only 1020 copies (Borst says there were only 500, but Blanck's figure is more likely). This was the last of Thoreau's four "seasons" to be posthumously published from his journal: EARLY SPRING had come out in 1881, followed by SUMMER in 1884; curiously, WINTER came next, in 1888. Even using Blanck's larger number of copies, AUTUMN is one of the two scarcest (EARLY SPRING consisted of 1018 copies, while the other two consisted of 1260 and 1550 respectively). This is a bright, nearly fine copy with very little wear (small bookplate on the front paste-down, a few small faint scratches). Borst A11.1.a; Blanck 20130.

GESSI, Romolo.
London: Sampson Low, Marston & Company, 1892. Octavo. Original dark red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt and ruled in black, pale yellow surface-paper endpapers. Just a little rubbed, spine slightly sunned, a scatter of pale foxing, mainly front and back, a very good copy. Portrait frontispiece of Gessi from a photograph, 22 plates (2 double-page, largely from wood-engravings), illustrations in the text, folding coloured campaign map. First edition in English, published just a year after its Milan publication, and including letters "which do not appear in the Italian edition" (Note by the Translators); uncommon. In 1877 General Gordon was appointed as Governor of Sudan and he immediately made preparations to move against the thriving slave trade based at Bahr el Ghazal (now in South Sudan) and it's leader Al-Zubayr Rahma Mansur, known as the "Black Pasha". After various manoeuvrings the latter was detained in Cairo and his son Suleiman, in accordance with his father's wishes, started an insurrection, raising 6,000 troops and conducting large scale raids. Gordon instructed his right-hand man, the Italian soldier and explorer, Romolo Gessi, also called Gessi Pasha (1831-81), to crush the insurrection. The multi-lingual Gessi had served originally as a translator with Gordon during the Crimean War. Following his campaign against the slavers, for which he earned the title of "Il Flagello degli schiavisti" (The Scourge of the slavers), Gessi became Governor of Bahr-el-Ghazal. RIMBAUD Arthur
1892. 8vo (183 x 125mm). Vii, 151pp. Original printed wrappers, with glassine jacket, partially unopened (upper wrapper detached, text-block split, spine discoloured, minor browning to leaves). Paris [Evreux, imprimerie de Charles Hérissey]: Léon Vanier, 1892. Uncommon, first collected edition of Symbolist poet Rimbaud's two best-known works, Les Illuminations and Une Saison en Enfer, which were first published in 1886 and 1873 respectively. Some editions have 1892 on the cover and 1891 at the foot of the title page, rather than 1892 as here. The first work here, Les Illuminations is a collection of experimental poems in verse and prose with a preface by Paul Verlaine, taken from the first edition of 1886. Verlaine explains that the poems were written between 1873 and 1875, while travelling around Europe; the title 'Illuminations', used by Rimbaud as the working title, is English and refers to coloured plates. 'A seize ans,' Verlaine writes, 'il avait écrit les plus beaux vers du monde.' The autobiographical Une Saison en Enfer, arguably Rimbaud's most famous collection, was written 'between April and August 1873, the turbulent period which saw his disastrous last stay in London with Verlaine, and their final separation after the incident in Brussels in which Verlaine shot and wounded Rimbaud' (Michaelides, 199). Printed in Brussels by the Alliance Typographique, Une Saison en Enfer was the only one of his works to be published by Rimbaud himself; that is, the nineteen-year-old poet persuaded his mother to pay for it. Leaves browned, good copy. Carteret Romantique II, 272. … [Click Below for Full Description]

In the early 1870s she had a very public affair with Blunt's cousin, the diplomat Philip Currie, whom she married after the death of her husband in 1893, and in 1880 she began a relationship with Blunt himself.
