Thomas Hardy
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1892. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I can provide a link to many more photos. Just ask! 1892 Tess d'Urbervilles Thomas Hardy Illustrated Victorian Novel Sexuality RARE "The beauty or ugliness of a character lay not only in its achievements, but in its aims and impulses; its true history lay, not among things done, but among things willed." - Thomas Hardy, Tess of the d'Urbervilles Thomas Hardy was an English author of the naturalist movement, although in several poems he displays elements of the previous romantic and enlightenment periods of literature, such as his fascination with the supernatural. 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' was considered controversial when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the sexual morals of late Victorian England. It initially appeared in a censored and serialized version, published by the British illustrated newspaper 'The Graphic' in 1891 and in book form in 1892. This second U.S. edition includes the controversial material that was omitted from the first edition. Artist Christabel Frampton rare bookplate
Rare book of French Opera Pélléas Et Mélisande By Maurice Maeterlinck 1892 Paul Lacomblez Bruxelles 4th Edition . Claude Debussy wrote the music for this opera. What makes this book completely unique is that it was once owned by the reknowned artist Christabel Frampton Ne Cockerell ( she exhibited in her married name), who was married to the reknowned and leading Sculptor Sir George Frampton. The book was rebound for her in calf's leather and embossed with gold leaf shamrocks on the front, spine and back. The shamrock is also present on her engraved bookplate which was designed by the reknowned artist and designer Robert Anning Bell. The book plate alone is well known and referenced in many books The binding is in excellent condition, as is the structure of the book and pages. However due to the age there is some foxing on the pages and the bookplate. That doesn't detach from a wonderful piece, a rare book, with a unique binding, owned by a noted artist with a bookplate designed by a noted designer.

Devol, George H.
New York: George H. Devol, 1892. 300pp. plus frontispiece portrait and four plates. Original green cloth, gilt. Cloth moderately rubbed, light edge wear. Previous owner's signature and presentation inscription on front free endpaper. Titlepage partially torn at gutter, not affecting text. Lightly toned. A very good copy. Rare presentation copy of the second edition of the classic work on riverboat gambling, by one of the few sharks to write his memoirs in full. The first edition was published in 1887, and copies are found with Cincinnati and New York imprints. In the present copy, a former owner writes on the front free endpaper that this copy was "Presented by the Author (Geo H. Devol), at the Monmouth Park Race Track July 8th, 93." Though this is a secondary inscription, presentation copies of any kind of Devol's works are exceedingly rare and highly desirable. George H. Devol was a notorious 19th-century gambler, and the bane of suckers and sharpers throughout the rivers and towns of the Mississippi Valley. As he explains in the lengthy subtitle, Devol could steal cards and cheat the boys at eleven, and stack a deck at fourteen; he bested soldiers on the Rio Grande during the Mexican-American War; won hundreds of thousands from paymasters, cotton buyers, defaulters, and thieves; fought more rough and tumble fights than any man in America; and was "the most daring gambler in the world." George Devol was born in Marietta, Ohio, in 1829, was running a keno game by the time he was fourteen, and quickly built a small fortune by running games and taking his cut. He moved … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: Choudens Fils, Editeurs, c.1892. [1]p. Broadside or Poster. 31½ x 23¾. Chromolithography with metallic ink highlights by Lemercier of Paris. Remnants of hinge mount tape at top verso; four old, inexpert thin paper mends in margins of verso; six thicker paper mends in margins of verso; images clean with bright colors; very good. C.1892 French chromolithographic poster for Le Pays de l'Or [The Golden or Promised Land], a comic operetta and spectacle set in America including the Western plains and mountains. The poster, designed by artist "Le Maresquier"-possibly Louis Sébastien Lemaresquier (1843-?), features a woman aerial gymnast riding a bicycle on a slack wire over Niagara Falls. Americana-themed vignettes surrounding her include a pair of American flags on the stern of the sailing ship Washington, a comic hotel scene with African American servants, and two fantastically rendered Native Americans. Th three-act operetta included 14 tableaus and such musical numbers as "Salut! reine de l'Amérique" [Greetings! Queen of America], "En Amérique, c'est la mode" [It's the fashion in America], and "Parcourant les monts et la plaine" [Roaming the mountains and plains] sung by a choir of Native Americans styled "Red Skins"-"Chœr des Peaux-Rouges." Scenes from the operetta, set in a hotel room, feature a choir of black servants, a "Quatuor Boufe" [Comic Quartet], and the "Chanson Nègre" [Negro Song], "Ça qui est bon?" [Which is good?] sung by a character named "Tom." One of these comedic scenes is depicted on the poster vignette wherein two African-American servants … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Anna Bowman Dodd (January 21, 1858 - January 1929)
Boston: Little Brown and company, 1892. viii, list of illus. 394 p. signed by the author when she was in Istanbul to the Sultan Abdulhamid II in 1901 . with Arabic private library number (98) on the spine . In original hard covers binding.Anna Dodd was an American author from New York. She wrote short stories, essays and a series of articles on church music. After Dodd wrote a paper on the Concord School of Philosophy for Appleton's Magazine, English journals copied it, a French translation was reprinted in Émile Littré's Revue Philosophique, and the author found her services in growing demand. She was engaged by Harper's Magazine in 1881 to furnish an exhaustive article on the political leaders of France, which she prepared for by going to France, in order to study the subject more closely. The paper's editor, Henry Mills Alden, pronounced it as 'the most brilliant article of the kind we have had in ten years'. Before returning to the U.S., she visited Rome and prepared a description of the carnival for Harper's.Dodd's first book was Cathedral Days (Boston, 1887), and her second The Republic of the Future (New York, 1887), was also successful. She published novels, such as Glorinda (Boston, 1888), as well as a book on Normandy, In and Out of Three Normandy Inns (New York, 1892). See wikipedia artical

[Calligraphic Manuscript] Agnes Hornung
[N.P.], 1892. Manuscript short story in a vernacular binding of drab card hand-tied with a pink ribbon, measuring 7 x 8 inches. 8 neatly handwritten pages with 7 detailed pen illustrations on facing pages. Accompanied by a 4 page Autograph Letter Signed by the book's author and illustrator Agnes Hornung to her dear friend Ada Hudson, for whose sixteenth birthday the book was created. An exceptionally lovely example of Victorian women's use of literature and art exchange as a personal expression of taste and intimacy. Calligraphy and drawing were important activities for educated women at the turn of the century. As these women gained power in consumer culture as readers and art collectors, they also publicly practiced good taste and displayed their educations by crafting pieces of their own. "Copying verses in beautiful calligraphy sheltered women from the charge of an extravagant and corrupting interest in purely commercialized forms of culture...this personal, tactile involvement with decorative objects remained a powerful index of women's gentility" and a measure of their literary and artistic knowledge (di Bello). The present work participates in this tradition. At the same time, it stands out as an original work rather than a scribal copy of another author's narrative. As "a token of love and remembrance from her friend," A River's Story in all its simplicity speaks to the way a woman's life progresses, shaping the spaces around her and growing with the addition of new relationships and loves that she can nurture. In Agnes' letter to Ada, which accompanies the book, … [Click Below for Full Description]
