Fontane, Theodor, Schriftsteller (1819-1898)
Berlin, Potsdamer Str. 134 c, 24. I, 1890. Gr.-8°. 2 Seiten. Doppelblatt. Bülow in Ibsens 'Gespenstern' auftrat. [Click Below for Full Description]

New York / Maine, 1890. Hardcover. Very Good/Near Fine. Oblong octavo measuring 15.5" x 11.25". Quarter black cloth with black leather boards and embossed decorations in a metal spine frame. Contains 144 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 4.5" x 3.5" and 6.5" x 4.5" with some captions. Boards separated from the spine but attached to the fabric and present with age-toning on the album pages, very good with near fine faded photographs with moderate rusting. An amateur photographer's family photo album from New York City and Maine in the 1890s. The album is both a compilation of family photographs from extended members living in Farmington, Maine and of the city itself. The album features portraits of each of the members with several well composed photographs of the babies in the family. Although the album was purchased in 1914, as written on the shop sticker on the front pastedown, it's likely the photographs are much older. The families clothing is humble and slightly out of date for the time with very tight and form fitting garments in satin, heavier wools, and predominately dark colors. It's likely that the photographs are from the 1890s to fit the fashion seen in this album. Of the portraits, they are highly detailed and well shot, likely by an amateur photographer of the family. There are a few group pictures captioned "picnic party" and "idle times" showing the family, well dressed and out together. There are even a few smiles in the photographs! There are shots of the city, where the album itself was purchased at Folmer & Schwi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Imhoof-Blumer, F.
Mnchen: Aus den Abhandlungen der k. bayer. Akademie der Wiss, 1890. München: Aus den Abhandlungen der k. bayer. Akademie der Wiss, 1890. 4to, original cloth-backed printed boards. Fine engraved frontispiece of the author; 274 pages; 14 fine plates of coins. Covers a bit discolored; text and plates appear never to have been opened. Near fine, overall. A remarkably nice copy of this very scarce work, still significant for dates of the Asia Minor city issues, autonomous money and Greek imperial coins. The 1890 work is an update and translation of the 1883 French edition, and includes five plates not in the earlier edition. Percy Gardner summarized Imhoof-Blumer in the obituary he wrote for him in the Numismatic Chronicle: "Mr. J.P. Six of Amsterdam surpassed him in brilliance of conjecture, and Barclay Head in breadth of view, but neither could rival him in extent and accuracy of knowledge. ... I do not suppose that anyone hereafter will carry the whole of Greek coinage in his head as Imhoof-Blumer did." This copy would be perfect for anyone wishing to have one finely bound, as it would appear that book has never been used (though the existing covers are discolored). Clain-Stefanelli 1838*. Gluck, Themistocles (Themistokles)
Verh. Dtsch. Ges. Chir., 19. - Berlin, Verlag August Hirschwald, 1890, 8, XXX, (1), 139, (2), 626 pp., zahlr. Holzschnitte u. 7 lith. Taf., feiner Halbleinenband St.a.Tit. Erstdruck des Referats vom 11. April 1890 und der Diskussion vom 12. April. - cf.D.Wessinghage, Th.Gluck, p.17. "Total joint replacement, one of the most successful operations of modern times, is generally considered a development of the twentieth century. Yet the first total joint replacement was performed in Berlin in 1890. The tuberculous knee joint of a 17 year old woman was replaced by a hinged ivory prosthesis. The surgeon was Themistocles Gluck, whose pioneering work was dismissed during his lifetime and remains largely unrecognised to this day. The early days Gluck's early experimental work concerned organ resection and transplantation. His thesis was entitled "On the extirpation of organs" and his main hypo-thesis was that after the loss of one of a paired organ the remaining organ would take over the total function. Tendons and nerves were harvested from cadavers, disinfecte … [Click Below for Full Description]

Feininger, Lyonel, Maler (1871-1956).

ANTHONY, Susan B.
J.H. Kent Photographer, Rochester, N.Y, 1890. Gelatin silver cabinet card photograph. Measuring 4" x 5.75". The card has been trimmed to the margins of the image, old paper tape shadows or remnants on the verso apparently from previously having been mounted, near fine. Backmark of photographer John Howe Kent, one of the country's leading portrait photographers. Anthony is captured in profile wearing glasses with her hair tightly coifed. Signed by Anthony beneath her portrait: "Susan B. Anthony. 1820 - Feb. 15. - 1890," her 70th birthday. Anthony frequently had her photograph taken for her birthday; whether this was signed on her birthday or not we do not know, but clearly it would have been contemporary. A strong image and a bold clear signature. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Hearn, Lafcadio; [Koizumi Yakumo]
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1890. First Edition, First Printing. Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original decorated cloth with the title label applied to the front board and the title and author label applied to the spine panel (the spine shows some minor sunning, most notably to the spine label due to the dust jacket cut out -- see below, and the boards show some minor corner rubs; multiple pages are unopened, or are only partially opened, on their leading fold, showing the book to have been only partially read -- or possibly entirely unread); in a Very Good + example of the EXCEEDINGLY RARE UNSOPHISTICATED dust jacket -- original to this copy of the book -- with scattered small tears and chips and with the arc over the spine label split on one side and nearly so on the other. The viewer will notice, of course, that the dust jacket is plain as it is from the period when jackets were used not to sell the book but only to keep the book clean until put out for sale. Virtually all of the dust jackets for the book would have been discarded. The viewer also will see that the jacket's spine panel was long ago clipped to reveal the author's last name and the book's title -- a common warehouse practice -- which would have made locating the book on the warehouse shelves easier than otherwise would have been the case. At the time this book was issued, dust jackets were not generally used to help sell the book and thus lacked the decoration one sees on later-published books. Such jackets also often did not show one or all of the title, the author, o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frost, Max, editor
Santa Fe, N.M.: New Mexican Printing Company, 1890. 216pp. plus tipped-in errata slip and two large lithographed folding maps. Original tinted pictorial wrappers. Expertly mended along joint of front wrapper. Text a bit toned, but clean. Very good. First edition of this uncommon promotional for the territory of New Mexico, printed in Santa Fe by the Bureau of Immigration, and including large folding maps of New Mexico and its land grants, and of the Santa Fe Railroad Route and connections. The text covers a wide range of subjects, such as the land and its energy resources, farming (with a chapter on "Agriculture Along the Rio Grande"), cattle raising, manufacturing, irrigation projects (especially in the Pecos Valley), a chapter on the New Mexico Hot Springs, schools, population statistics, and a long section of detailed descriptions of the New Mexico territory county by county. The first map shows the location, boundaries and grantees of all the numerous early Spanish and Mexican Land Grants, prepared by the Bureau of Immigration, of which Max Frost was a member of the Executive Committee. The status of land grants in New Mexico at this time was a matter of contention, and the detailed information given on this map would have been of interest to current and prospective landowners in the territory. The second map, by Rand McNally, shows the routes and extensive connections along the Santa Fe Railroad, from Chicago to Missouri, and then snaking into Kansas and throughout the southwest. A scarce work institutionally, and rather rare in the market. ADAMS, HERD 857, "scarce … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eisenmann. [ca. 1890]. Cabinet card (albumen photographic print mounted on card), approximately 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches. Edges scalloped and gilt, photographer's stamp on recto. Signed by the subjects, "Millie-Christine," on verso. Very light wear, faint fox mark in image background, else near fine. Signed cabinet card portrait of the famous conjoined twins Millie and Christine McCoy (1851-1912), by the great photographer of human marvels on the Bowery, Charles Eisenmann. The twins, often referred to collectively as "Millie-Christine" or "The Two-Headed Nightingale," were among the most widely viewed, scrutinized, and applauded human anomaliesof the 19thcentury. Billing them often as the "Eighth Wonder of the World," promoters touted the fact that the girls were joined at the lower spine, more intimately attached than Chang and Eng, the original Siamese Twins. Audiences drawn to see the twins remarkable anatomy found themselves marveling likewise at theirmusical performances, radiantpersonalities, and moving personal story.Millie and Christine were born into slavery in Columbus County, North Carolina in 1851 and immediately became a spectacle among curious residents of the surrounding region. By the age of ten months they were sold to a showman for the sum of $1000, and over the next five years they passed through the hands of both bidders and kidnappers, who exhibited them privately to prodding physicians at publicly at dime museums and county fairs. At the age of two, they disappeared in New Orleans, and their legal title was transferred to Joseph Pearson Smith, the guarantor … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Antwerp) New York: Frederick Stokes & Brother. 1890. Bound with the orig. grey printed paper wrappers, in full dark green crushed morocco, elaborate gilt floral borders, raised bands, gilt compartments, red & brown morocco labels, gilt dentelles. v.g. The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, published partly in response to his infamous libel trial brought against John Ruskin, Whistler had asked his friend Sheridan Ford to edit it. Prior to publication however, the relationship broke down and Whistler chose instead to edit the work himself; it was published by William Heinemann in 1890. Ford, determined to publish his own version, printed an edition of 2000 copies in Antwerp. He was followed to Antwerp by Whistler's lawyer Sir George Lewis who successfully imprisoned Ford and embargoed all 2000 copies. Subsequently Ford issued another pirated edition with the unauthorised imprint of Frederick Stokes & Brother. Another Paris edition was suppressed by Lewis, but copies of the 'Frederick Stokes' edition made their way to America. Ford, in his initial 'note' commends 'the book to Mr Whistler's enemies, with the soothing assurance that should each of them purchase a copy the edition will be exhausted in a week'. A collection of letters and articles chronicling in large part his many grievances against his acquaintances and friends. Included is Ruskin's criticism of Whistler's painting Nocturne in Black and Gold – The Falling Rocket that propelled Whistler to the libel courts: 'For Mr. Whistler's own sake, no less than for the protection of the purchaser, Sir Coutts Lindsay ought not to … [Click Below for Full Description]

1890. Turn-of-the-century German children's dice-based war game, the contents comprised of a set of 32 stiff lithographed cardboard pieces for constructing and playing the "fortress" side, a set of 30 stiff lithographed cardboard pieces for constructing and playing the "siege" side and 3 small stiff lithographed cardboard tents, 20 painted tin cannons in two colors, 2 dice, and a set of 38 metallic paper coins with a small drawstring bag, together with a single sheet of instructions. Game housed in original chromolithographed cardboard box with full-color illustration to lid depicting the setup of the game. Overall size of box 10-7/8 x 14-7/8 x 1-1/2 inches. Some wear to box, especially along edges, minor soiling, small tears to paper along sides, some splits at corners, overall very good condition. N.p. (Germany) n.d. (circa 1890-1900). The goal of this game was to conquer your opponent by rolling dice and taking away pieces of their base or camp that correspond to the dice rolled. The maker of this game is unknown, but according to Jeff Bowersox's 2013 book, "Raising Germans in the Age of Empire: Youth and Colonial Culture, 1871-1914", military tin miniatures and battle sets were commonly produced around the turn of the century. Stores were filled with these sorts of toys which offered "explicit lessons in the inevitable and heroic progress of civilization" and which could "teach young Germans about the course of great events and their significance for the development of the modern world." BROWN-SÉQUARD (Charles-Édouard). LETTRE AUTOGRAPHE SIGNÉE. Sainte-Adresse, 12 juillet 1890. [Click Below for Full Description]

ÉDITION ORIGINALE TIRÉE A 1.100 EXEMPLAIRES. [Click Below for Full Description]

Ufer, Frank
[Various places in North Dakota]: March - October, 1890. Very good.. Nine letters totaling 40pp. Octavo and quarto sheets. Old folds, light wear and soiling, one letter with moderate wear and some slight loss. A series of letters written by soldier Frank Ufer to Miss Maud Hurd of Alton, New Hampshire, while Ufer was stationed at several Army posts in North Dakota. Maud had corresponded with at least one other soldier on the frontier, Tom Logan, and her brother seems to have been in the army out west which is likely her connection to her current pen pal. Frank writes in his opening missive, "No doubt your Bro: has told you how monotonous garrison life is and as I am very much pleased with your letters, I would ask you if you would consent to continuing this correspondence so romantically began." Apparently Maud does consent, because Frank's letters continue, addressing in her in warm tones and endearments. He asks asks Maud for a photo, which she sends. Frank describes himself, his family background, and provides some personal history in a lengthy letter dated March 15th. He writes that he started in business with his father at age nineteen, but being young and foolish sold out his share and went west. "I was discontented, restless and dissatisfied. First went to Cheyenne, Wyoming tery. to Nebraska, Iowa, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Old Mexico, Texas, Kansas, Indian tery. Arizona tery. then to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and enlisted in the army after being thoroughly disgusted with myself and all mankind. ... You no doubt think the army a strange place for a disconte … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Gayarré
New Orleans: 1890. [Louisiana Literary History] Autographed letter signed, 8"x 4 15/16 opening to 9 7/8"; one leaf, vertical center fold; embossed stamp at head; four pages written in a neat hand on ruled paper, very good condition. From the collection of New Orleans author Grace Elizabeth King. Correspondence from New Orleans native and Louisiana historian Charles Gayarré, to notable Alabamian Col. James E. Saunders who was a prominent figure early in the Civil War for the Southern cause and author of the celebrated book Early Settlers of Alabama. He was a persuading factor in the recognition of the merit of General Nathan Bedford Forrest by the Confederate government. Saunders served as Forrest's aide until he received a severe wound [shot through the breast at the Battle of Murfreesboro] and retired to his plantation "Rock Hill". New Orleans, December 23, 1890, Col. James E. Saunders, Rock Hill: "My Dear Sir, Your favor of the 19th has found me in a most unenviable condition. Both my wife and myself have been in the grasp of the grippe for the last three or four weeks. It is very tenacious and has killed a good many old and young people. I am still racked with a dry cough which unmercifully tears to pieces my chest day and night, and has an awful squint toward pneumonia. It is a month since I have taken solid food. For the present, I write only to thank you for your sympathetic efforts on my behalf and to gratefully acknowledge that I am much in your debt. I furthermore desire to inform you that I mail to you today, as a Christmas souvenir my History of Philip the Second … [Click Below for Full Description]
