Jackson, Catherine Charlotte Lady
London: Richard Bentley & Sons, 1890. First edition. Two volumes finely bound by Bayntun in full red crushed morocco stamped in gilt on spine and boards. Spine with five raised bands. All edges brightly gilt. Green silk moire endpapers. Green morocco doublures with fine inset portraits of Henry VII and Marie de Medici set under glass at front of each respective volume. Extra-illustrated with 58 extra plates, 19 of these in color. A beautiful history in a Cosway style binding. Lady Catherine Jackson was a historian and author whose professional career began as editor and publisher of the diaries and letters of her late husband, British diplomat Sir George Jackson. After this work, Lady Jackson published a travel narrative of a Portuguese trip which was generally well received. She then turned to historical projects, beginning with a multi-century account of high society in the French court. Critics pointed to historical inaccuracies but recognized that Lady Jackson had a commendable sense of historical storytelling (DNB). Her last work tackled the rise of the House of Bourbon, whose tendrils stretched throughout countries and centuries in European monarchies. This work, The First of the Bourbons, appeared in two volumes in 1890, the year before Lady Jackson died. The present volume's sumptuous binding and extra-illustrations are a fitting match for the opulence of the Bourbon dynasty. Fine. Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Photography - 19th Century] [Abolition] [Alaska] [Douglass, Frederick] Warren, George, et al.
V.p., 1890. Oblong quarto, leatherette, heavy card stock album pages with photographs affixed. Good. This album of photographs, assembled probably during the 1890s, is notable in three ways; for its extensive collection of notable cultural figures in the late nineteenth century including abolitionists, politicians, women's suffrage advocates authors, etc; the inclusion of early Kodak Model Two photographs of Alaska including Inuit subjects; and in particular the scarce portrait of Frederick Douglass, taken by George Warren. We can only guess as to the origins of the album. The first two images show women posed in the landscape of Sugar Hill, New Hampshire, a popular resort that attracted wealthy summer visitors after being made famous by White Mountain artists. The album then proceeds, somewhat mysteriously, as follows: two scenes in France; an 8 x 6 inch view of High Bridge, New York; nine tourist views of Europe; two Kodak Two photographs of Alaska including a glacier; a portrait of Napoleon III; a European view; two views of Muir Glacier, Alaska and Lone Star Geyser, Yellowstone Park; three Kodak Two scenes of California; an albumen view of the Cliff House, San Francisco; a large unidentified view of a mission; fifteen Kodak Two views of Alaska including views of Juneau and one of native basket sellers; an unidentified albumen of a sculpture. The second part of the album is composed of sixty-two portraits of notable cultural and political figures, both American and European, including several abolitionists. The subjects include: Albert Barnes, General Irvin Mc … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Pine Ridge Reservation] [Lakota] [Wounded Knee Massacre] [Eastman, Elaine Goodale?][Eastman, Charles?] [Cook, Reverend Charles Smith] Meddaugh, James Edward
Rushville: J.E. Meddaugh, 1890. Albumen cabinet card photograph, 6 ⅛ x 4 ⅜ inches on larger mount. In the period prior to the Wounded Knee Massacre, many white members of the media visited the areas surrounding the Pine Ridge Reservation to witness the Ghost Dance and capitalize on any ensuing hostilities. Among them was James Edward Meddaugh, an itinerant photographer who had spent time in Dakota Territory and was based at the time in nearby Rushville, Nebraska. While at Pine Ridge, Meddaugh took this photograph of a gathering at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church at Pine Ridge, including Reverend Charles Smith Cook (shown far left) and what appears to be Charles Eastman (shown fifth from the left) and possibly Elaine Goodale Eastman (shown at the far right). During the period before the massacre, Goodale (not yet married to Charles Eastman, that would happen in 1891), was doing missionary work among the Lakota, living with Reverend Cook and his wife. Charles Eastman, a Santee Dakota who had converted to Christianity and changed his name from Ohíye S'a before attending Dartmouth and Boston University Medical School, had taken a job as agency physician at Pine Ridge. Cook was part Yankton Sioux. The other subjects in the picture are likely the members of the congregation, alongside other missionaries and agency officials. The man fourth from the left appears to be a policeman, a badge shown on his jacket. Robert American Horse was catechist at the church, though we cannot identify him as a subject in this photograph. The church would later be used as a hosp … [Click Below for Full Description]

1890. Here is presented the Charles Nathaniel Peal Book Legacy, a collection of five antique boxes containing 80 journal article offprints (many signed, some with letters), that provides some insights into the collecting of microscopic organisms during the Victorian era, from their capture during expedition cruises (Wright, 1890; Ridley, 1881; Vigelius, n.d.) to their mounting on microscope slides (Morland, 1887; 1889). The first four boxes include articles on Bryozoa and Protozoa, while the fifth box regards Conchology. Each box carries the following mention: 'This Book forms part of the PEAL LEGACY, consisting of BOOKS, and NATURAL HISTORY SPECIMENS, bequeathed by the late Mr. C. N. PEAL'. The 'Peal Legacy' sojourned in the Reference Department of the Ealing Public Libraries, after which it was auctioned at the Bloomsbury House of London in 2008. Charles Nathaniel Peal (1832-1898), a resident of Ealing, West London, England, is the perfect example of the Victorian era gentleman, who devoted his time to the study of natural history. He was member of the Royal Microscopical Society, the Linnean Society of London, and the Quekett Microscopical Club. He was also treasurer to the Ealing Microscopical and Natural History Society (Peal, 1888). See our other eBay AD for some microscope slides from the Peal collection. Peal's collection of 80 offprints -- spanning from 1853 to 1898 (see the Reference section for the complete list) -- is not only a valuable scientific resource, it also describes the process of collecting microscopic organisms in situ and on glass slides. With a num … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tolstoy, L.
Moscow: self-published, 1890. [2], 141, 15 pp. 24,5x16 cm. Original full-leather binding with decorative gilt on the front cover. Gilt edges. Contemporary inscription on the first half-title 'Betekhtina T.' Edges of the spine are slightly chipped, but otherwise in a very good condition. EXTREMELY RARE LITHOGRAPHED EDITION THAT LIKELY APPEARED BEFORE THE FIRST TYPOGRAPHIC EDITION. The underground hectograph edition of the most scandalous work by Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910). Covering the topics of sexual abstinence, jealousy and lust, Kreitserova Sonata [i.e. The Kreutzer Sonata] (1887-1889) was banned by the Russian censors even before any typographic edition appeared. In November 1889, the story was read in public at the publishing house Posrednik and "the stir spread like rings in water, and in a very short time reached the outermost fringes of the Russian Empire and beyond" (Postlude to the Kreutzer Sonata). Despite Tolstoy's reluctance, the novel was copied and a number of lithographed editions were in circulation in St. Petersburg. Although the copies were quite expensive, costing to some ten to fifteen rubles, they disappeared almost immediately. The work was officially suppressed in 1890 both, in Russia and the United States (First American edition came out in 1890; The United States Post office prohibited the mailing of publications containing serialized installments of the novel). The basis for The Kreutzer Sonata, according to Tolstoy, was a letter he received from an unknown woman in February 1886. In the diary, the author wrote: "So, the inspiration for the Kreutzer S … [Click Below for Full Description]

DAVIS, Varina Jefferson
New York: Belford, 1890. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I can provide a link to many more photos. Just ask! 1890 1ed Jefferson Davis Confederate States President Civil War Battles SLAVERY "A sentimentalized account, including parts which Davis dictated before his death." (Nevins) A rare first edition of Mrs. Varina Davis's account of her husband, Jefferson Davis's life. This book is an important view into the life in the Confederate States of America, following the American Civil War. This book also includes Davis's views on African Slave trade as well as the modeling of the Confederate Constitution from the United States Constitution. Other important topics include the Confederate preparation for war, recaps of various battles and skirmishes from the Civil War, CSA presidency, and more. According to Larned, "Mrs. Davis's memoir furnished what her husband's book greatly lacked: the story of the personal and social life in the Confederate executive mansion. His work was severely controversial: hers is an amiable and vivacious presentation of men, women, and events, drawn with insight and full knowledge. It gives us valuable pictures and telling comments and must always have high rank in its sphere. No doubt it also reflects in considerable measure Mr. Davis's own opinions, softened in the presentation." London: Cassell Peter & Galpin, 1890. Beautiful teal/green hardbound boards with gold gilt text on cover and spine. Cover and spines also have black flower and geometric designs in raised embossing. The front cover has two gold medallions: one has polar bear being attacked by wolves and the lower one has two giraffes being shot at by a hunter. The spine has text at top, flower in the middle and stars at the bottom that indicate volume number. The back cover has an embossed design. Beveled boards, spine and corners show some edge wear with only slight blemishes to the covers and some very slight bumping to the corners, especially based on age of books. The spine and hinges are firmly attached, straight with no slanting. Text block is firm. Chocolate brown end papers show minor wear and volume four has a small hole in the loose end page and approximate one-inch tear at the top of page. Some age tanning throughout but not any foxing or smudges. The interior pages are in very good condition, no previous owner marks. This beautiful set of six volumes "The Countries of the World: Being a Popular Description of the Various Continents, Islands, Rivers, Seas, and Peoples of the Globe" is a rare find in a complete set and in such outstanding condition. Written by Robert Brown, M.A. it was published by Cassell Peter & Galpin of London. This edition has no stated publication date but it is assumed circa 1890 as the original set was published between 1876 to 1881. Each book has a steel engraved frontispiece and 100+ more black and white illustrations included in 320 pages per volume. Vo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Feininger, Lyonel, Maler (1871-1956).

"There is little doubt that the most elaborate and ingenious movables ever produced were those of the German Lothar Meggendorfer (1847-1925) made during the 1880s and 1890s....the mechanisms and operations of Meggedorfer's books - not to mention the originality of the figures -- are far superior to any others published before or since. The devices that operated the various figures in his books consisted of a series of inter-connecting cardboard levers sandwiched between the coloured illustration on the front of the oblong leaf and the dummy pasted behind it. The animated limbs and heads were cut-out models on the front of the picture, and moving the tab set the whole scene in motion [see: HAINING, Movable Books, pp.65-73]. Overall a clean copy with all tabs functional. Orig. publisher's pictorial boards colored in red, black and blue with cloth backstrip renewed. Very good. Item #18907.

J, Fenimore Cooper
New York: Lovell, Coryell & Company, 1890. See description. Antiquarian Collection Of Works Novels By J.Fenimore Cooper 32 Vol. Set I do not see a date in the books, believe they are mid to late 1890's Covers and spines show some age consistent wear but for the most part are pretty nice. Two book have covers that have separated from the books. All are fragile from age and could be damaged this way if not careful. Pages look very good and are bound well with no noticed loose pages. Overall a really nice set that will display well. These are from the personal library of J.M. McFarland. He passed around 1924 and donated his collection to the Mason's Lodge here in Topeka, KS where they remained until recently when it closed. The have a book plate on the inside cover of each book and the top closed pages of each book has a very faint stamp from the lodge.
