THE STORY OF THE 26TH LOUISIANA INFANTRY IN THE SERVICE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES.

      - n.p. [1890.] 228 pages. Dornbusch II, LA(C)-469. COULTER TRAVELS IN THE CONFEDERATE STATES. ‘This narrative merits consideration for both reliability and travel comments. Written twenty years after the war without benefit of a diary or other material, it contains few improbably personal details and most observations appear to be accurate. Hall lived in Lafourche Parish in Louisiana where, in 1862, after the fall of Fort Donelson, he organized a company and became its captain. The travels described here were not extensive, being entirely in Mississippi and Louisiana, except for one or two trips to Richmond. The captain first led his unit to Berwick Bay but was soon on his way to help defend New Orleans. After the fall of that city, he proceeded by rail to Vicksburg by way of Jackson. He was in Vicksburg at its fall, and was paroled. Later he appeared at the parole camp in Alexandria, Louisiana and was exchanged within a year. When the Confederate fell, he was moving toward Shreveport. Hall describes a Confederate soldier’s life, including his diet of rat and mule in besieged Vicksburg.’-Coulter, Travels in the Confederate States 208. First edition, interior clean and tight, hinges tightened, scuffed, spine title incomplete, per usual, some long ago insect damage to boards, presentation copy from author with corrections to dedication in his hand. Protected by a clear acid-free mylar dust jacket. 481-11 $1,700.00 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

         POETICAL WORKS

London Smith, Elder & Co. 1889-1890 - 6 volumes. With an engraved frontispiece in each volume (mostly portraits of Browning at various periods of her life) and a number of other full page engravings. 8vo, handsomely bound and signed by Estes & Lauriat in contemporary three-quarter crushed dark-green morocco over marbled boards, gilt lettered in two panels of the spines, the remaining four with a small gilt floral tool inlaid with red morocco, the raised bands of the spine nicely tooled in gilt, t.e.g. xviii, (2), 306; vi, 287; viii, 293; vi, 294; vi, 290; (iv), 393 pp. including general index and index to first lines. A fine set, the backs as usual, mellowed to a handsome and pleasing honey colour. A FINE SET, HANDSOMELY BOUND OF THE WRITINGS BY THIS GREAT POET OF 19TH CENTURY ENGLAND. This is the most complete edition of Browning's works. It first appeared in 5 volumes in 1866, and was extended to 6 as here in 1889. It includes the preface to the first collected edition of 1844 and the advertisement to the 1856 edition. Also in this edition, appearing for the first time, is a 4-page prefatory note by Robert Browning correcting several biographical errors. An especially attractive set. Browning’s poetry was already critically and publically accepted while she was alive; for example, she was considered Wordsworth’s successor as poet laureate upon his death. However, Browning’s more advanced ideas may appeal to readers of this generation. Browning was sympathetic to the ideas of Mary Wollstonecraft, politically progressive in her views and in the literary realm, transformed poetic style and content. Thus, her work is by no means a mere curiosity but rather representative of the highest literary and intellectual achievements. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Big size (27 x 37 cm, board 36 x 46 cm) group photo on an album site. Some Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in Nigg near Cromarty. It was a rifle regiment of the British Army, the only regiment of rifles amongst the Scottish regiments of infantry. It was formed in 1881 under the Childers Reforms by the amalgamation of the 26th Cameronian Regiment and the 90th Perthshire Light Infantry. On back 6 photos of Tom Nickalls and Emily Nickalls (born Quihampton), one of this T.Nickalls in Arabian Costume (Albumen Print c. 1880/1890). Tom Nickalls (18271899) who was a famous stockjobber on the stock exchange and one of the founding members of London Rowing Club. He was known as the "king of the American railroad market". Emily Quihampton (19 July 1834 29 March 1909) was a 19th-century outdoor enthusiast who was the first woman to climb Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa in the same week. These peaks are the highest mountains in France and Switzerland. In his autobiography, Life's a pudding, her son Guy Nickalls says this was in 1868. If this is correct, she would have been pregnant at the time as she gave birth to a daughter, Grace in October 1868. Old pen description. All photos in good condition, very rare.

The Firm of Girdlestone - A Romance of the Unromantic.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1890. Small 8vo, viii, 399pp. Polished red calf extra, gilt-panelled backstrip, all edges gilt, original cloth upper cover bound in. A fine binding by Bayntun, in fine condition. First edition, presentation copy inscribed by Conan Doyle on the title-page: “With the author’s compliments and thanks”. A lovely copy of the first book Doyle wrote, which was his fourth published book following on the success of “A Study in Scarlet”. Doyle reputedly had an aversion to inscribing his books, especially the Sherlock Holmes titles, and, as here, very rarely even signed with his name, preferring “from the author” on the rare occasions he did inscribe a book.

         LEAVES OF GRASS

n.p., ca. 1890[?]. This manuscript can perhaps best be described as a most elegant commonplace book: our unknown scribe has lettered the title page "My Leaves" in red majuscules, and followed it with a collection of favorite passages from Whitman's best-known work, copied out in a pleasing humanist hand. The manuscript isn't signed or dated, but the style of the writing and the binding suggest that the creator was likely inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement that flourished during the final decades of the 19th century and first years of the 20th. Whether this was a personal treasure or a valued gift, it has been very carefully preserved over the years, and shows few signs of use.. 232 x 180 mm. (9 1/8 x 7"). [46] leaves with text on recto only. Original limp vellum, gilt titling, green silk ties threaded through both covers. In a contemporary (original?) hinged wooden box. With burnished gold initial at beginning of each excerpt. Occasional naturally occurring variations in color of vellum both to the binding and to a half dozen leaves, a couple of pages with small ink stains of no consequence, otherwise a very pleasing specimen featuring a lovely hand, a well-preserved binding, and leaves that are clean, smooth, and fresh.          Correspondence with the Duke of Marlborough concerning an affair between Edith Finch, Lady Aylesford, and George Spencer-Churchill, later the 8th Duke].

None. 1876-1890. - ORIGINAL LEDGER WITH COPIED MANUSCRIPT LETTERS FROM THE DUKE'S BIRMINGHAM SOLICITOR. Quarto (29 x 24cm), with letters written in black ink to a single side of 214 numbered leaves, out of a total of 1000. Delicate leaves akin to tracing paper. In original tan half calf with dark brown cloth boards and marbled endpapers. Together with a word-processed TRANSCRIPT of the letters produced by Gerald Leach, stapled at left margin. Joints split, but hinges remain strong. Very heavy wear to fore-edges and spine. Fair overall. A remarkable collection of private correspondence, largely between Birmingham solicitor R. Harding Milward and John Spencer-Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough. In January 1876, where this collection begins, a society scandal blew up when it emerged that the Duke's heir George, known as Lord Blandford, had started an affair with Edith, the wife of Heneage Finch, 7th Earl of Aylesford, who was then touring India with the Prince of Wales. With encouragement from the Prince, Aylesford promptly returned from India in order to file for divorce; an action he was already anxious to carry out on account of his own affair with a Mrs. Dilke, whose husband had recently died in suspicious circumstances, leaving her £30,000. At this time Blandford was himself involved in an acrimonious separation dispute with his wife, Lady Albertha, forcing him to regularly petition his father for loans to support his extensive debts and maintenance obligations. In order to prevent both of these potential divorces, which would have destroyed the reputations of all involved, the Duke of Marlborough's second son Randolph is known to have aggressively blackmailed the Prince of Wales and his wife Alix with allegations that the Prince himself had had an affair with Edith some years earlier (though none of this is alluded to in these letters). In the end George did divorce his wife shortly after he became the 8th Duke of Marlborough in 1883, but although he had fathered a child with Edith in Paris in 1881, he never married her, and instead wed the American heiress Lilian Warren Price, whose fortune helped restore the ailing family seat, Blenheim Palace. Amidst all this social chaos, the doughty family solicitor manages to keep the old Duke up to date with domestic affairs during his long absences in the south of France; managing repairs to the Palace, sale and rental of various properties, and even reports on the state of the gardens and trackways. When the younger Duke succeeds he also shows himself capable of clearing up his various personal issues, including packing off a troublesome Henry Allnutt to Brisbane. Milward, the lawyer, was the great-grandfather of Bruce Chatwin, who boasted that his forebear "cheated the then Duke of Marlborough out of many millions". Kenneth Rose, a journalist friend of Chatwin's, discovered that Milward had owed his creditors huge sums, and was sentenced to six years in prison, during which sentence he died. In response, Chatwin wrote: "A real operator - £108,595.15.11 is no mean sum. If only he hadn't been found out!" A fascinating and detailed collection of letters essential to any study of the Churchill family during the period of Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill's birth and childhood. Chatwin, Bruce, Elizabeth Chatwin, and Nicholas Shakespeare, "Under The Sun: The Letters of Bruce Chatwin" (London: Random House, 2010), pp.121-22. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

         The Kreutzer Sonata

Benj. R. Tucker, Boston 1890 - First American edition of Tolstoy's 1889 novel of sexual jealousy, self-published by translator Benjamin Tucker. The Kreutzer Sonata turns on the tormented monologue of Posdnicheff, recently acquitted of murdering his wife on the grounds of her apparent adultery: "I entered into the furrow dug formerly by my filthy suspicions, and I continually deepened it. She did the same thing." Tolstoy's account of the way that married couples turn against each other was immediately censored, both in Russia and abroad; his longtime American translator Isabel Hapgood flatly refused to translate it. Into the void stepped Boston anarchist publisher Benjamin Tucker, who printed his own unexpurgated translation of The Kreutzer Sonata in June of 1890. When Tucker refused to extend a discount on the book to department store owner John Wanamaker, who also happened to be serving as Postmaster General, Wanamaker banned The Kreutzer Sonata from the United States mails on the grounds of obscenity. The ensuing publicity and trial led to an explosion of interest in the novel. "Why," Tucker asked, "did two competing editions of The Kreutzer Sonata appear on the market before mine had had the field two months? Simply because the money was pouring into my pockets." This is the first printing; Tucker would issue several later printings under his own imprint, before his translation was republished by J.S. Ogilvie later in the year. Line 72. A near-fine example of a landmark in Russian literature and American legal history. Octavo, original full green cloth lettered in gilt. Private library label of George C. Hull to front pastedown.          In Darkest Africa or, The Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria.

Charles Scribner's, New York 1890 - First American edition of Stanley's classic work. Octavo, 2 volumes, cartographic endpapers. Two steel-engraved portrait frontispieces, two photogravure plates on India paper, mounted, 36 wood-engraved plates on India, mounted, 6 etchings by M.G. Montbard, 4 colored maps and plans; the 2 larger folding maps mounted on linen. In near fine condition with some light rubbing to the extremities, small repair to the map of volume two. A very sharp example. Stanley and Emin entered Bagamoyo on their donkeys, some way ahead of their caravan, on 4 December, 1889. It was sensational news. Emin was safe, although the expedition to relieve him had cost the lives of at least 700 people. With the good journalist's facility for rapid reporting, Stanley began his account of the rescue at the Hotel Victoria, Cairo, on 25 January 1890, working on it continuously for fifty days at the rate of 20 printed pages per day. The first portion of the manuscript was delivered to the printer's on 12 March and the last proof sheet returned for printing by Clowes on 3 June. Hosken p. 189 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

A reception for him, organized by the Royal Geographical Society at the Albert Hall on 5 May 1890, was attended by 10,000 people, including the Prince of Wales. First edition. 2 volumes. 8vo., original pictorial cloth, housed in a cloth drop-back box. London, Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington. A presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper 'To the Lord Provost Muir of Glasgow, for courteous hospitality and attention to the author with his special compliments Henry M. Stanley July 3rd 1890 London' Stanley ranks alongside Burton and Livingstone as one of the most important of the nineteenth-century African exporers. The DNB states: ?[he did] more than any other explorer to solve the mysteries of African geography, and open up the interior of the dark continent to European trade, settlement and administration.? Following the fall of Khartoum, Stanley was entrusted with leading a rescue mission since the remaining Egyptian force under Emin Pasha was thought to be in grave danger. He was however saddled with other aims, not least to further British colonial interests in the area from Lake Victoria to the Indian Ocean, and to explore the north-eastern sector of the Congo State. It took the party five months to reach Wadelai only to find that Emin Pasha did not feel the need to be rescued, having made a peace of sorts with the local tribes. To make matters worse, three quarters of Stanley's rear-guard en route had perished due to lack of provisions. Despite this failure, Stanley managed to fulfil the additional aims of the journey. He traced the course of the Semliki River, discovered Ruwenzori, provided ethnographic data on the Pygmies and set up the British East African Protectorate. The lower joint to vol 1 weak., in general slightly worn, small book label of Frank Murray to the front pastedown of volume two. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
