      London: T. Fisher Unwin 1891. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1891.. 12mo. Tan linen, ruled and lettered in green, t.e.g., others untrimmed. Ink name, dated 1893, on free endsheet, light foxing to endsheets and occasionally at edges, hint of wear at toe of spine, but an unusually nice copy. First edition, first printing, clothbound issue, of Yeats's first published extended works of fiction, issued in Unwin's "Pseudonym Library." According to Symons, as quoted by Wade, the edition consisted of two thousand copies, of which 356 were bound in cloth, and the remainder in wrappers, for publication in the second week of November. However, Yeats had copies in hand as early as 1 September, and Unwin sent Henley a copy in the following week. The BL deposit copy (received 13 November), as well as two review copies Yeats sent out on 9 November, were of the copies bearing the denotation "Second Edition" on the title (also dated 1891). In his introduction to the 1991 edition of this title issued in Macmillan's edition of the COLLECTED WORKS, Richard Finneran supports the case that the numbers Wade quoted from Symons (i.e. a total edition of two thousand copies) may very well encompass Unwin's first and second "editions," and possibly the third "edition" of 1892 as well. In regard to the first and second, he suggests that "it thus seems virtually certain that, as was to happen with THE WIND AMONG THE REEDS a few years later, the two 'editions' were printed simultaneously, the only difference being the cover and title page," and in regard to the uncommon copies of the third "edition," he suggests "it is possible" that these copies as well are included in Symons's citation of two thousand copies. Beautifully detailed chart of the Bosphorus from the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea. Shows depths, navigational notes, the location of buoys, and some inland routes and towns. Soundings in fathoms, relief in hachures, and hand colored red and yellow paint indicates lighthouses. Map insets include the Beikos, Umur and Buyukdere Bays and the Golden Horn and three topographical cross section views show "clearing marks". A tab at lower left extends the coastline southwest of Istanbul. Based on French Naval sources from 1854 with English additions by Captain W.J.L. Wharton. Published under the Superintendence of Rear Admiral G.H. Richards and distributed by chart seller J.D. Potter. Some chipping along edges, crease to top and bottom.

Black cloth with gilt lettering. Respined in black cloth some time ago. A good copy, with the bookplate of E.D.R.Eagar. Padwick 433/810. The best known book by the greatest of cricketers, this was just as much the work of W.Methven Brownlee, as Grace acknowledges at the beginning. Brownlee had written the first biography of Grace four years earlier. This is No.64 of the limited edition de luxe, signed by Grace. The text is the same as the ordinary edition, the extra pages being taken up by the list of 652 subscribers. This copy was subscribed for by Rev the Hon E.Lyttelton.

      San Francisco: Elliot Publishing Company, 1891. First printing Original Lithotint. Folio (41.75" x 27.75"). Very Good Condition. Professionally restored. Rebacked on Rice Paper. A large handsome depiction of this coastal Washington boom town laid out on the shores of Bellingham Bay, and a particularly compelling example of the promotional power of the bird's eye view. It shows the town already much developed, but with many choice lots still unoccupied. A railroad line runes along the waterfront, the bay is busy with steam vessels, and a lumber mill and stands of conifers at the edge of town carry the suggestion of a great natural resource nearby. Fairhaven failed in its bid against Seattle to become the commercial hub of Washington, joining with Sehome, Whatcom, and Bellingham to form the city of Bellingham shortly after 1900.       2 pp. Octavo. Dated April 1, 1891. In German (with translation). Regarding the forthcoming first performance of his cantata, Christnacht. "Please be so kind as to let me know directly, or through Weingartner, if the orchestral rehearsals of Christnacht have already started and how they have gone so far. Please also send word as to when the dress rehearsal is scheduled. If only you could get Weingartner to write me a note!" . Wolf's cantata, Christnacht, to a text by August Graf von Platen-Hallermünde, was first performed under the noted Austrian conductor Felix Weingartner (1863-1942) on April 9, 1891 in Mannheim, "the last concert to be conducted by Weingartner at Mannheim before he left to take up an appointment with the Berlin Opera." Walker: Hugo Wolf, p. 285. Apparently conceived as the composer's "answer to Bach's Christmas Oratorio..." "... The first sketches for the work are dated Christmas Eve 1886... In a letter to Oskar Grohe (26 February 1891), Wolf wrote that he had conceived the composition as a portrait of Christ's personality in two manifestations, the child and the ‘Weltüberwinders’, or hero who overcame the world. At the end, these themes and other musical ideas merge and unfold ‘with tongues of flame the dogma of God made man and of salvation’, he told Grohe, adding that if the execution did not keep pace with the concept it was ‘nobody's fault but my own’... Christnacht has much to commend it and many admirable effects in the lengthy orchestral introduction alone... But Wolf being neo-Bachian/Lisztian in huge brass-laden choruses is Wolf being bombastic, especially in the chorus of believers (Platen indicates shepherds here, but this was insufficiently solemn for his purposes, so Wolf told Grohe, hence their new designation as ‘Gläubigen’) and the final chorus, and the work is in consequence not an unmitigated success..." Wolf "intensified the expressive vocabulary of the lied by means of extended tonality and post-Wagnerian declamation while retaining the defining elements of the song tradition he had inherited from Schubert and Schumann. Profoundly responsive to poetry, he incorporated detailed readings of his chosen poems in the compositional decisions he made about every aspect of song: harmonic nuances, tonal form, melodic design, vocal declamation, pianistic texture, the relationship of voice to piano, etc. Seeking an art ‘written with blood’, he went below the surface of poetry – even where his musical purposes were inevitably distinct from the poet's – in order to recreate it in music of remarkable intensity, written, as he once proclaimed, for epicures, not amateurs." He was a self-taught artist, whose work "reveals a strong sense of humor and an acute observation of character-" He had a special empathy for Black characters and drew them with an understanding and geniality uncommon in his day" (Reed, p. 20).

      London: published by order of the Government of India, printed by Taylor and Francis, 1891. Folio. (14 1/2 x 10 7/8 inches). 24 hand-coloured lithographed plates, by J. Smit (2), J.G. Keulemans (15), W. Hart (3) and one other, printed by Hanhart, each mounted on a guard, 1 folding zincographed map, hand-coloured in outline. Original grey/green paper upper wrapper, letterpress titling to the upper wrapper, the lower wrapper supplied with near uniform paper (neat repairs to the upper cover and spine). Housed in a green morocco backed folding box. The complete ornithological section of the official scientific results of an important government-supported expedition in India. The complete report in 14 parts was published between 1878-1891 and served as part of the official justification for what essentially had been a move in the "Great Game." In 1873, the second Yarkand mission under Sir Douglas Forsyth was sent by Lord Northbrook, Viceroy of India, to cement British and Indian relations with Yakub Beg, the ruler of Chinese Turkestan and an important figure in the buffer region between Russia and India. The mission was well-equipped, as befitted an official government attempt to impress a local ruler and it is said that the Ladakh economy took four years to recover from the losses incurred from the passage of the expedition. The mission set out from Rawalpindi to Leh via Murree, travelled past the Pangong Lake, Changchenmo and Karakash Valley onto Shahidulla and finally to Yarkand. They reached Kashgar in December 1873, and on March 17, 1874 began the return journey. They were to visit the Pamir and Afghanistan areas but the political situation prohibited the passage and the party returned to India via Ladakh. Ferdinand Stoliczka, the mission's geologist and naturalist, made good use of the opportunities offered and made extensive observations. Unfortunately, he died before he was able to publish any of his work. His papers and notes were edited by various well-known scientists, with the present ornithological section being completed by Sharpe.The plates, all worked up from skins collected by Stoliczka, are produced by three of the greatest ornithological artists of the late-19th century. Two already had an extensive back-catalogue: Joseph Smit (1836-1929) "the best animal painter in [Great Britain]" (Christine Jackson) had worked with Josef Wolf on two of G.D. Elliot's monographs and William Hart had been employed almost full-time by John Gould. John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912) was a Dutch-born artist and a relative newcomer, who went on to become a mainstay of British ornithological illustration for two decades at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th-century. Christine Jackson writes that as "an ornithological draughtsman ... [Keulemans] was outstanding ... Such a large proportion of the birds drawn by Keulemans were done from [stuffed] specimens that it is truly amazing that he could make the birds in his plates look life-like at all. He understood the anatomy of birds, also he was a keen bird-watcher, and these considerations obviously saved him from producing mere bird-contours in his drawings." Bound in the original uniform light blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine and a Victorian London cityscape on the front cover. Very good+, with a bit of edgewear. A few of the volumes have a contemporary name on the flyleaf and a few have a sligthly weak inner hinge. Last volume has a smaller, professional repair.. A straight run of the first 32 volumes of The Strand Magazine, not least famous for the publications of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories illustrated by Sidney Paget. In these volumes are the complete first editions of 'The Hound of Baskervilles' (serialised in 1901-2), and the short stories later collected in 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes', The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes' and 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes'. Volume six contains the dramatic 'death' of Sherlock Holmes in 'The Final Problem'. The Strand Magazine is also a brilliant source of Victorian entertainment and mentality

        Three Autograph Letters To His Publisher, Signed, Dated 1891

      Harrow on the Hill [London], 1891. Three handwritten letters to the London publisher Swan Sonnenschein, dated between April 7-18, 1891. Four, two, and three pages respectively. Each on a single octavo sheet, folded once to make four ca. 18cm x 11cm pages. Each letter neatly penned in ink in Kropotkin's hand, datemarked "Harrow on the Hill" (a neighborhood of London); each signed, "P. Kropotkin." Minor toning at folds and margins, else Fine. & & A fascinating series of letters relating to publication of Kropotkin's major book Fields, Factories, and Workshops, a popularization of his Communist Anarchist philosophy intended for workingmen and general readers. In the first letter, dated April 7th, Kropotkin pitches his concept of the book, to be based upon "...articles which I lately contributed to The Nineteenth Century upon the necessity of combining Agriculture with Industry, & Brain work with Manual work." He goes on to list the articles he will use, promising to undertake necessary revisions and updating of statistics; he predicts the book "...will make about 55,000 words with the Appendix, and might be published, I suppose, in a 4/o volume...Would you like to undertake the publication of this book?" The answer was apparently in the affirmative, as Kropotkin's next letter responds (negatively) to the publisher's idea of including the book in their "Social Science Series": " opinion is, that the book which I propose to publish is not one which might suitably be published in that Series...its character is different, and it appeals to another set of readers." But in the final letter, written on April 18th, Kropotkin seems to yield on this point; he agrees with the publisher's proposal to bring the book out at 5 shillings, then goes on to discuss royalties (1-1/2d to the shilling) and requests an advance of 60 pounds. & & Fields, Factories, and Workshops was finally published in 1899, under the Hutchinson imprint, and was soon recognized as a foundation work of the Anarchist movement; it is now considered a major classic of political philosophy and is probably Kropotkin's most-read work. The circumstances accounting for the near decade lapse between Kropotkin's conception of the book and its eventual publication are murky; however, the fact that Swan Sonnenschein did not bring out the first edition, but did later issue a popular edition of the work (in 1901), suggests to us that publication may have been delayed due to a misunderstanding over which publisher in fact had rights to the book. Whatever the case, this remains a scarce and historically important series of letters, with real content, by the widely-acknowledged Father of modern Communist Anarchism.

Smaller format letterpress "Notice to Subscribers" tipped in at front of part VI, smaller format "Completion of the work" notice from the publishers tipped in at front of part VIII. 79 fine hand-coloured lithographic plates by William Mathew Hart, after his own drawings (52) and John Gould (20) or John Gerrard Keulemans (7), 13 uncoloured illustrations. Original pictorial grey paper-covered boards, dark blue cloth spines, the upper cover of each part with the letterpress title beneath a large wood-engraved title vignette, the eight parts contained in two dark green morocco-backed cloth boxes, the spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third compartments, the others with repeat decoration in gilt made up from various small tools. A very fine copy of this, the first monograph devoted to these remarkable birds and the "last of the fine bird books" (Fine Bird Books p.107). This copy, in original parts, with the best colouring of any copy that we have handled in past forty years. The remarkable-looking Birds of Paradise have captivated western science since Magellan first brought back a skin of such a creature in 1522. The skins, highly prized by East Indian natives, was given by the ruler of Batchian (in the Mollucas) as a gift to the King of Spain. The legs and wings of the bird, however, had been removed when skinned, presumably to better show its impressive plumage. When asked why the bird had no wings or feet, the natives replied that none were needed as the bird simply floated in its heavenly paradise. Thus, the earliest descriptions of the species, and indeed even its scientific naming by Linnaeus in the 18th century as Paradisaea apoda (legless bird of paradise), perpetuated that myth. Due to the remote nature of their rain forest habitat in New Guinea, it was not until the mid-19th century that these remarkable birds were first scientifically observed and accurately described. Gould had intended to publish a the first monograph devoted to the birds of paradise following completion of his Birds of New Guinea, but he did not live to do so. When Sharpe took over the task of completing that work, he appealed for subscribers for the proposed monograph. The response was clearly enthusiastic as within three years the first part of the present work was published. Some of the plates had previously appeared in Gould's Birds of New Guinea as "Messrs. Sotheran purchased the stock of Gould's works after his death [and] acquired the stones with which he had intended to illustrate his Monograph... Many of them were broken or otherwise damaged, and of these some have been redrawn or replaced by new plates by Mr. Hart. Since Gould's time, however, many marvelous new species have been discovered, and these have been described and figured in the present work" (Appendix). As the small format slip in part six makes clear, the timing of the publication of the work could not have been better, as so many beautiful new species were discovered whilst the work was in preparation that Sharpe felt justified in extending the size of the work from six to eight parts. Copies of this work were issued at a later date with inferior hand-colouring. The quality of the colouring of the plates in the present copy is outstanding, and it is only with examples of this work in the original parts that the colouring can be guaranteed to be contemporary with the original publication dates. Copies such as the present example are very rare: only three are listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty years.         Unai no tomo (A Child's Friends; Japanese folk toys)

      A rare work of high artistic and ethnographic importance, the first comprehensive illustrated book on the subject, and a source of inspiration for the Mingei movement: it has since inspired such artists as Munakata Shiko and served as a reference for historians, anthropologists, ethnographers and collectors. 10 volumes were published separately, some at wide intervals, from 1891 to 1923. Offered are 3 consecutive early volumes from the first printing signed with seals (volumes ii-iv), complete in the publisher's blind-blocked wrappers with mounted title slips with 145 pages of captioned, full color (nishiki-e) woodblock prints, many extraordinary, showing at least 243 toys: Of the 133 prints, some have additional hand brushed color, 45 have applied gold or silver leaf and 12 are double-page, the woodblock printing superbly executed with finely detailed impressions and fresh colors. Shimizu was a student of Hiroshige III and had long contemplated the preparation of the work. His long intimacy with these handcrafted vintage toys and the deep connections they held for him, (all from his connoisseur's collection), resulted in a series of exquisite designs in which color, form and function all become one. There aren't just a few highlights: there are many; and their ability to create references to Japanese history, culture, religion and family life is endlessly surprising. AVAILABILITY: Rare: A worldwide catalog search finds 1 institutional holding at Waseda University for an incomplete set with volumes i-viii. SHIMIZU: The leading Meiji period collector of omocho (toys) including the varieties of ningyo (dolls). Artist, calligrapher, and head of a wealthy Tokyo trading company, he studied poetry (haikai) with Kozando Sangetsu and painting with Hiroshige III, holding in trust important Ando Hiroshige artifacts including his seals. In 1880 he founded the Takeuma-kai (Hobbyhorse Club) for advancing the enjoyment and study of the many forms of traditional Japanese folk toys and in 1906 he curated the first known exhibition of Japanese folk toys in Japan, the Kodomo Hakurankai (Children's Exhibition): many of the items were from his collection. In 1909 he founded the influential Odomokai (Adult's or Connoisseur's Club) that greatly advanced the appreciation of these symbols of Japanese culture, handmade from common materials and usually sold on ennichi or link-days, many originally derived from amulets and talismans rooted in Shinto and traditional Japanese folklore. Prefaces provide accounts of the early textual history of each of the works, and the volumes include the texts of first quartos of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, as well as the quartos relating to Henry V, The First Part of the Contention (2 Henry VI), and Richard Duke of York (3 Henry VI). Clark and Wright used the Cambridge edition as the basis for the influential one-volume Globe Shakespeare. Ink name, dated 1893, on free endsheet, light foxing to endsheets and occasionally at edges, hint of wear at toe of spine, but an unusually nice copy. First edition, first printing, clothbound issue, of Yeats's first published extended works of fiction, issued in Unwin's "Pseudonym Library." According to Symons, as quoted by Wade, the edition consisted of two thousand copies, of which 356 were bound in cloth, and the remainder in wrappers, for publication in the second week of November. However, Yeats had copies in hand as early as 1 September, and Unwin sent Henley a copy in the following week. The BL deposit copy (received 13 November), as well as two review copies Yeats sent out on 9 November, were of the copies bearing the denotation "Second Edition" on the title (also dated 1891). In his introduction to the 1991 edition of this title issued in Macmillan's edition of the COLLECTED WORKS, Richard Finneran supports the case that the numbers Wade quoted from Symons (i.e. a total edition of two thousand copies) may very well encompass Unwin's first and second "editions," and possibly the third "edition" of 1892 as well. In regard to the first and second, he suggests that "it thus seems virtually certain that, as was to happen with THE WIND AMONG THE REEDS a few years later, the two 'editions' were printed simultaneously, the only difference being the cover and title page," and in regard to the uncommon copies of the third "edition," he suggests "it is possible" that these copies as well are included in Symons's citation of two thousand copies. Two volume set of Story';s COMMENTARIES ON THE CONSTITUTION, considered by many to be the most important work on the Constitution, and is often compared to THE FEDERALIST. Volume I is a second edition printing (Boston: Charles C. Little and James Brown, 1851) while Volume II is fifth edition (Boston: Little, Brown, 1891). The second edition was edited by Story';s son, W. W. Story, while the fifth was edited by Melville M. Bigelow. Volume I bound in sheep, while Volume II nearly matches in calf. The first comprehensive treatise on the Constitution. Very Good binding.

        Ptilorhis Victoriae [Queen Victoria's Riflebird]

      London: Taylor & Francis for Henry Sotheran & Co., 1891-98. Hand-coloured lithograph by William Hart, printed by Mintern Brothers. Very good condition. 21 1/2 x 14 7/8 inches. A beautiful print from Sharpe's 'Monograph of the Paradiseidae, or Birds of Paradise, and Ptilonorhynchidae, or Bower Birds' Sharpe's work on the most spectacular of all bird families depicts the birds of paradise in all their glowing splendor, whilst the bower birds are pictured with their elaborately constructed "bowers", surrounded by the shells, bones and other small found objects with which they decorate the bower thresholds in an instinctive attempt to provide the finest backdrop to their highly elaborate courtship displays. Sharpe's comments in his monograph strike a chord with contemporary feelings on the preservation of the endangered species. Writing of the then current fashion of decorating women's hats with the feathers of rare Birds of Paradise, he concludes 'What will be said in the future by the civilized world and its scientific investigators when they find that we had the chance of learning the habits of these extraordinary birds, and allowed them to pass out of existence for the adornment of our women-folk, with scarcely a word of protest'. An Absolutely Sparkling Copy of a Lovely BindingExecuted by Cobden-Sanderson's Teacher 222 x 140 mm (8 3/4 x 5 1/2"). xxxi, [i], 380 pp. Edited with a Preface by William Rossetti. LOVELY BLUE-GRAY CRUSHED MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT, BY ROGER DE COVERLY (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with gilt-ruled frame occupied by a sinuous flowering vine accented with gilt dots and circles, central panel with cornerpieces incorporating curling leaves, a large flower, and many gilt dots; raised bands, spine gilt in double-ruled compartments featuring an unusual design of swirling leaves emanating from a central flower (made with the same tool as used for the cover), the vegetal elements surrounded by gilt circlets and dots, turn-ins gilt with cresting leafy roll accented with dots and circlets, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. A Large Paper Copy. A few niggling hints of imperfection, but AN EXTRAORDINARILY FINE COPY, immaculate internally, and the superb binding lustrous and glistening with gold. Combining the work of Rossetti and de Coverly, this beautiful item features two artists in different fields, both closely associated with William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement. Poet and painter Rossetti (1828-82), one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, was an early and profound influence on Morris, and he remained a lifelong friend. In an 1870 review, Morris wrote of Rossetti's poems, "I think these lyrics, with all their other merits, the most complete of their time; no difficulty is avoided in them: no subject is treated vaguely, languidly, or heartlessly: as there is no commonplace or second-hand thought left in them to be atoned for by beauty of execution, so no thought is allowed to overshadow that beauty of art which compels a real poet to speak in verse and not in prose. Nor do I know what lyrics of any time are to be called great if we are to deny that title to these." Roger de Coverly was one of the most accomplished binders in England during the latter part of the 19th century. He was apprenticed to Zaehnsdorf in 1845, worked for J. & J. Leighton from ca. 1852-63, then established his own bindery. In the 1880s, his bindings were in great demand, as were his services as a teacher: he undertook a good deal of work for William Morris, and he counted among his illustrious students Charles McLeish the younger as well as the greatest of all English bookbinders, T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, who served an apprenticeship with him in 1883-84. Most de Coverly bindings are in the classical style, and the quality of workmanship demonstrated by de Coverly and his two sons was consistently at the highest level. Although the binding is the main story here, the inside of the book is also most appealing, featuring a text very attractively printed within vast margins.

        A House of Pomegranates

      London: James R. Osgood McIlvaine, 1891. Hard Cover. 1 of 1000 copies. A nice copy of this relatively scarce book. It comprises four exquisite fairy tales: The Young King, The Birthday of the Infanta, The Fisherman and His Soul, and The Star-Child. This was WildeÕs second collection of stories following The Happy Prince and Other Tales. Although his fairy tales were seemingly for children, Wilde in fact intended them more for adults. He is quoted as saying that the stories were intended neither for the British child or the British public. Bound in original publisherÕs cloth binding, with title and author to cream colored front boards, with ornate designs in light red and a gilt peacock, fountain, and fruit basket. The spine is green linen with gilt title and author. There is smudging, browning, and bumping to covers, and the spine is faded with small tears at top and bottom. There is browning and chipping along the edges of the endpapers. The interior is clean, with striking black and white Ricketts drawings and designs throughout. The hinges are slightly cracked in the rear but the text block is tight. It is described by Stuart Mason in his 1906 Wilde bibliography, that the four full page illustrations by Shannon were printed in Paris by a new process. In attempts to remove a dusty deposit resulting from this new process, the surfaces of the plates were also removed, leaving the reproductions of the illustrations faint and in some cases virtually removed. 158 pages.         Life on the Mississippi

      624 pages with frontispiece and over 300 black and white illustrations. Royal Octavo (9" x 6 1/4") Issued in the original brown cloth with gilt lettering and pictorial on spine and black and gilt lettering with pictorial on cover. All edges in gilt. Lacks the illustration of Twain's head in flames on page 441, but contains "St Louis Hotel", not the corrected "St Charles Hotel" on page 443. (BAL 34II) Mixed state of the first American edition.Twain once remarked that he considered this book his masterpiece, the book that would outlive his other works and endure as a classic. Of course, Twain once defined a classic as a book everybody talks about but nobody ever reads. At first glance it seems to be a travel book, but it is really a highly readable discursive autobiographical account of Twain's boyhood and his region, and of a culture that radically changed since he left home 30 years earlier. It makes good reading as background for Huck Finn. The only thing that is known of the printing history is what Twain wrote in 1891: that 50,000 copies were printed and bound, but only 32,000 sold. Implication is that the unsold copies were reissued by Charles L Webster between 1884 and 1891 when he took over Osgood's stock. Copies are found with Osgood's sheets and Webster cancel title-page, in Webster bindings, dated 1888 and 1891. As a subscription book, this book was similar in size to the hefty tomes of the American Publishing Company, but the handsome pictorial brown cloth binding ranks with the binding of Huck Fin as one of the best on a Twain first edition. It could be ordered with gilt edges, in full sheep, three-quarter morocco, and three-quarter calf. Condition:Recased with new end papers else a very good copy.

II's spine lightly vertically creased, still a very good copy, the cloth bright and fresh. First edition in book form, one of 750 copies issued of Doyle's medieval romance, "a remarkable piece of research on fourteenth-century English mercenary warfare in France and Spain" (ODNB).
