        Damaris: A Play in Four Acts [Original Typed Script}

      [Sherborne, England] 1891 - Paperback. Original typed manuscript of an unpublished play by Louis Napoleon Parker. Parker (1852-1944) was an important British dramatist and composer who was also well-known as a producer of civic and patriotic pageants. He was born in France and lived throughout Europe until, at age seventeen, he was sent to London's Royal Academy of Music and stayed on. During his long career he was known for his successful adaptations of French and foreign plays, and is particularly remembered for his dramatization of W. W. Jacob's story, "The Monkey's Paw." He also was commissioned to write a play about Disraeli specifically for the actor George Arliss. Arliss toured in its production for several years and later starred in a film version. There is no record of this play, Damaris, ever having been published or produced. This copy was typewritten at "Miss Dicken's Type Writing Office," with a few mss emendations. It was printed in four parts, each bound in its original brown wrappers with typed labels on the front covers. The cover of each part has the ownership inscription of the actress Alma Murray. Murray (1854-1945) was a successful and highly regarded English actress. This copy was undoubtedly given to her for her consideration. Some chipping and curling to wrapper covers, but in very good condition. Act I: 17 pages; Act II: 21 pages; Act III: 18 pages; Act IV: 17 pages. DRA/011312. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        [Autograph Letter Signed]: To Harvard President Charles W. Eliot (27 March 1891)

      Fremont, Ohio. 1891. Octavo. One page dated 27 March 1891 from "Spiegel Grove," Hayes summer home in Fremont, Ohio. Light crease at the top right corner, near fine. Housed in a custom quarter-leather clamshell slipcase. A letter to Harvard President Charles Eliot, written in reply to Eliot's recommendation "in behalf of the application of Du Bois for aid from the Slater Fund in pursuing his education."W.E.B. Du Bois had just earned his Masters degree in history and sociology at Harvard and was convinced that "a careful training in a European University," would be "indispensable to my greatest usefulness." Both Eliot and Du Bois appealed directly to former President Hayes, who was then serving as Chair of John F. Slater Fund. Established in 1882 for the education of Freedmen in the South, the fund was specifically intended for individual African-Americans and schools devoted to industrial education. Du Bois's application was thus both unprecedented and daring. Hayes himself had openly questioned whether blacks, especially "historical students," could be trained in Europe. Despite these concerns, which he alludes to at the end of the letter, Hayes actively worked to help Du Bois win a $750 Slater fellowship that allowed Du Bois to study at the University of Berlin from 1892 to 1894, a period critical to Du Bois's intellectual awakening. Upon his return in 1895, Du Bois became the first African-American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University. An important letter that documents the crucial role played by Hayes and Eliot in the life of Du Bois. .

        VERHANDLUNGEN DER DEUTSCHEN GESELLSCHAFT FÜR CHIRURGIE.- Bd. 20 - 45

      Berlin (Hirschwald), 1891 - 1920.. in 26 Bänden. je band ca 500 S. mit zahlr. Abb. Hldr der Zeit und HLn der Zeit mit goldgeprägten Rücken. Kanten teils etwas berieben, innen sehr gut erhalten. Ordnungsgemäß aus den Beständen der Volkspolizei ausgesondertes Bibliotheksexemplar (Rückenschild, Stempel), gutes Ex.. In diesen Bänden spiegelt sich der ungemeine Fortschritt den die Chirurgie, durch die Einführung der Röntgentechnik erfuhr, wieder. "Als gegen Ende des Jahres 1895 die staunen erregende Nachricht durch die Welt ging, daß Röntgen in Würzburg unsichtbare Lichtstrahlen entdeckt habe, die durch feste Körper hindurchgehen könnten und auf photographische Platte ebenso einwirkten wie das Tageslicht, war es klar, daß eine solche Entdeckung für die Chirurgie von der größten Bedeutung sein mußte. Die Herstellung von Hittorfschen Röhren wurde schnell ein wichtiger Industriezweig, in den Kliniken wurden überall Durchleuchtungen am Platincyanürschirm vorgenommen, und photographische Schattenbilder von Frakturen und Luxationen und von Fremdkörpern in der Hand hergestellt. Schon auf dem nächsten Kongreß (1896.I.25) sprach Kümmel über die Diagnose der Knochenherde durch Röntgenstrahlen. Mit Hilfe des Funkeninduktors von 25 cm Funkenlänge und einer gut ausgepumpten Röhre von Müller in Hamburg war es ihm gelungen, die Expositionszeit bei den Aufnahmen, die zuerst 20 Minuten und länger betragen hatten, auf 10 - 45 Sekunden, bei der Aufnahme von Fingern sogar auf 3 Sekunden zu verkürzen und nicht nur eine dunkle Silhouette der Knochen zu bekommen, sondern ein zarter gezeichnetes Schattenbild, auf dem auch die Strukturen des Knochengewebes deutlich zu erkennen war. Als Probebilder zeigte er ein Typhusherd in einer Phalanx, einer Spina ventosa, ein Gumma im Radius, einen Fremdkörper in der Hand. Am Durchleuchtungsschirm hatte er die Bewegungen des Zwerchfells und den Herzbeutel erkennen können. Der Apparat, mit dem er arbeitete, sei allerdings eine ziemlich kostspielige Anlage. Er kostet 'mit Rheostat und zahlreichen dazu gehörigen Röhren immerhin etwa 1500 M'. (Glückliche Zeiten!). Ferner von Kümmel (1898 II) 'Die Behandlung des Lupus mit Röntgen-Strahlen und mit concentrirtem Licht'. Geissler (1898, I) berichtete über die Erfahrung der Bergmannschen Klinik, die wegen des weniger wirksamen Apparates nicht ganz so günstig waren wie die Hamburger. Sehe man von den metallischen Fremdkörpern ab, so sei eine besondere Förderung für die Diagnose und den Operationsplan durch die Röntgenbilder bisher nicht gewonnen worden. Was die Augen direkt gesehen und die Finger gefühlt hätten, wäre noch allein maßgebend geblieben, aber für den klinischen Unterricht und zur Überzeugung von Richtern und Laien wären die Bilder von Wert. Krause - Altona (1899, I) empfahl die Erneckeschen Röhren mit 2 Anoden, von denen die eine aus dünnem Platinblech bestehe. Aufnahmen von Hand und Vorderarm könne man damit in wenigen Sekunden machen, allerdings koste diese Röhre 36 M. Feilchenfeld - Berlin (1900, I) warnte vor nachteiligen Folgen der Bestrahlung. Von einigen Kollegen sei ein Kind mit Skoliose, um ein Bild von der Wirbelsäule zu bekommen, 1 Stunde und nach acht Tagen noch einmal 1 1/2 Stunden lang bestahlt worden und habe ein Eczema solare bekommen, ein Elektrotechniker ein Ekzem an den Händen, nachdem er sie häufig durchleuchtet hatte." Trendelenburg, Die ersten 25 Jahre der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Chirurgie, 1923, SS.114 ff.

        Autograph letter signed ("A. Naquet").

      Paris, 19. V. 1891. - Large 8vo. 3 pp. on double leaf. To "Mr. Granier" (probably the French politician Régis Frédéric Granier, 1806-94), in answer to a question regarding his opinion of Giuseppe Garibaldi: "[.] peut-on donc avoir des opinions variées sur ce grand patriote latin quand on est républicain et quand on est français? Mon sentiment est qu'on ne peut en avoir qu'une. Républicain on ne peut saluer qu'avec respect la mémoire de ce milicien de la liberté [ ] Quant à Crispi sur lequel vous m'interrogez aussi c'est l'antipode de Garibaldi [.] Il n'a pas fait la triple alliance, ce renouvellement de la sainte alliance, cette croisade des rois contre les peuples: elle était faite par d' autres que lui lorsqu'il est arrivé au pouvoir. Mais il a été le digne héritier des auteurs de ce pacte auquel il a plus que tout autre contribué à donner son maximum d'intensité [.] Les trois nations qui bordent la Méditerannée: l'Italie, la France, et l'Espagne sont sœurs, en dépit de tous les calculs égoïstes de la réaction Européene; et elles ont encore à jouer pour la défense des libertés générales un role [!] contre lequel tous les Crispi et les Mobilant ne sauraient prévaloir [.]". - On stationery with printed letterhead; fol. 2 with small label, ms. number and monogram stamp "LS".

        Paradisea Augustæ Victoriæ [Empress of Germany Bird of Paradise]

      London: Taylor & Francis for Henry Sotheran & Co, 1891. Hand-coloured lithograph by William Hart, printed by Mintern Brothers. Very good condition. A beautiful print from Sharpe's "Monograph of the Paradiseidae, or Birds of Paradise, and Ptilonorhynchidae, or Bower Birds." Sharpe's work on the most spectacular of all bird families depicts the birds of paradise in all their glowing splendor, whilst the bower birds are pictured with their elaborately constructed bowers, surrounded by the shells, bones and other small found objects with which they decorate the bower thresholds in an instinctive attempt to provide the finest backdrop to their highly elaborate courtship displays. R. Bowdler Sharpe was John Gould's assistant for many years and was the only man knowledgeable enough and sufficiently attuned to the famous ornithologist's vision to complete several of his works. Sharpe's comments in his monograph strike a cord with contemporary feelings on the preservation of the environment: writing of the then current fashion for decorating women's hats with the feathers of rare Birds of Paradise, he concludes "What will be said in the future by the civilized world and its scientific investigators when they find that we had the chance of learning the habits of these extraordinary birds, and allowed them to pass out of existence for the adornment of our women-folk, with scarcely a word of protest." Fine Bird Books (1990) p.142; Nissen IVB 865; Whittel p.663; Wood p.565; Zimmer p.581.
