The Strand Magazine. An Illustrated Monthly. I-VI.

6 volumes. Burleigh Street, Strand, London 1891-93 (i.e. 1891, 1892 and 1893 complete). 662 + 670 + 660 + 684 + 652 + 724 pages. Richly illustrated with wood-cut pictures. Nice contemporary (Edwardian style!) uniform redbrown half-calf bindings with raised gilt bands and black title-labels.. A lovely set. The Strand Magazine is a brilliant source of Victorian entertainment and mentality. This set contains the complete Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (I-XXIV), with the congenial illustrations by Sidney Paget

        [Print]. Christopher Columbus

New York: Knoedler & Co., 1891. First edition. Edges toned else a near fine copy. One of twenty-five remark proofs on parchment, signed by the etcher with an original color sketch (a jaguar). Commissioned by the prestigious art firm, Knoedler & Co. Based upon the only original which bears any definite authentication, and which is in the Naval Museum collection, in Madrid, this portrait of Christopher Columbus by Lefort, President of the French Society of Etchers, was a companion to his portrait of Washington, completed ten years earlier. "The investigations of M. Lefort into his subject led him to adapt this portrait by preference for its natural and historical claims to authenticity. He has executed his plate, however, rather as an original reconstruction of the picture than as a servile copy. While he has scrupulously preserved the traits and proportions of the original, the quality of likeness in it, he has invested the face with a degree of determined thoughtfulness and exalted expression not visible in the old painting. It is the same Columbus, inspired with a loftier soul. The costume and the arrangement of the framework are original with the etcher, constructed after authorities in the National Library at Paris, and calculated to assist in the grave and dignified effect essential to so important a historical plate." (From the Knoedler brochure). OCLC locates a later copy: at the BN Espana (1903). Later elaborate wooden frame available without charge (except for postage): frame size: 31 7/8 x 27 1/8 inches.         Zur Auffasung der Aphasien

Leipzig: Franz Deuticke, 1891. Freud's Rare First BookFreud, Sigmund (1856-1939). Zur Auffasung der Aphasien. 8vo. [4] 107 [1]pp. Leipzig & Vienna: Deuticke, 1891. Modern cloth. Light browning, small ink & perforated library stamps on title, but very good. Library bookplate.First Edition. Freud's treatise on aphasia, his first book, was little known or appreciated by contemporary neurologists, but Freud always regarded it as the most significant of his neurological writings. Freud was the first to criticize the foundations of the Wernicke-Lichtheim theory of aphasia, which held that losses of function in aphasia were caused by lesions to anatomically circumscribed centers corresponding to the various functions in language. Freud demonstrated that this concept led to localization schemes of labyrinthine complexity and did not fit with specific case studies; it was thus necessary to assume that the cerebral areas involved in language were less circumscribed.         Die Evangelisch-Lutherische Gemeinde zu Jalta ihrem lieben Pastor Keller den 20. Januar 1891. Unikat: Ledermappe mit 59 Originalfotografien zum Abschied des Theologen und Schriftstellers Samuel Keller aus der Gemeinde der Krimdeutschen.

Jalta 1891. Ledermappe, 6 Bll. Mappe. Tolstoy finished the novella in late 1889 and the story was recited for public in a friends publishing house, but it was obvious that the Russian censorship would not allow the story to be published. Berg) published the story first in four languages (Russian, German, French and English) simultaneously. The second Russian edition was published the same year and the third edition in 1891.         VERHANDLUNGEN DER DEUTSCHEN GESELLSCHAFT FÜR CHIRURGIE.- Bd. 20 - 45

(Hirschwald),, Berlin 1891 - in 26 Bänden. Berlin (Hirschwald), 1891 - 1920. je Band ca 500 S. mit zahlr. Abb. TRIP DIARIES.

1891 - 1943, (Various): 1891 - 5 b/w photographs included. John S. Shedd was born April 13th, 1863 to Alonzo and Julia Dennis Shedd in Winchendon, Massachusetts. Shedd was a railroad man, working for the Pittsburgh Railways Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for his entire professional career. Even in his late 70s he was still going into the office upon returning from a trip. In the diary of 1900, Shedd is listed as Assistant Superintendent; at some point in the 1900s Shedd became the Division Superintendent, Division #2. At the time of his death in 1951, his total assets were valued at $65,780.48. From what we can tell, Shedd never married, and while he certainly had many friends that he visited in New York, Boston, Toronto, etc., he always traveled alone. From the diaries extant (we don't know if there were others) Shedd begins recording his vacations in 1891. He meticulously notes days/times/train compartment; arrival/departure times; hotel room numbers; ship berth numbers; at what table he is assigned onboard; what time he gets up in the morning and what time he goes to bed at night. He notes where he has breakfast, lunch and dinner, drinks, movies, excursions. He comments on everything! A keen observer of people, culture, architexture. He walks all over and notes how long it takes him. If a driving vacation, he notes mileage driven each day. He notes having gas, or falling out of bed, or hitting his head. He hires buses, taxis, cars, travels by train, ship, rickshaw and plane. His last trip recorded here - in 1943 at the age of 80 - finds him still walking, still taking sightseeing trips into swamps, up and down the Florida coast, over to Cuba and more, arising at the leisurely hour of 9:30am or even later! Over the years he runs into various royalty, meets the Pope, and shares a trip back from Hawaii with Shirley Temple. Went off by himself in Zimbabwe because he really wanted to visit the ruins at Ft. Victoria and such was not on the tour itinerary - he then proceeds to climb up to the ruins by himself at the age of 75. A voracious reader, Shedd enjoys sightseeing, dining out, going to movies, cigars, keno and just enjoying life. In 1933, Shedd witnesses planes practicing bombing raids in the Khyber Pass. When World War II restricted his travels abroad, he revisited places he had been to years before, possibly a bit disillusioned in spots as he notes the increase in the number of tourists, the number of "fat" women, and notes while visiting Yosemite and the Big Trees in 1940, having been there in 1898 - "Big Trees - still big." Shedd even notes his streak of good luck in always getting the lower bunk beds, and overall he maintains an interest in seeing all he can see. This collection of trip diaries offers a truly delightful view of the world - and he went everywhere - through the eyes of just one man. By reading Shedd's diaries, we return to a bygone era of traveling the world, dressing for dinner, spending the evening with a fine cigar and drinks, chatting with fellow travelers, sending your trunk on ahead of you, giving your laundry to the chambermaid, and having the man from the travel service waiting for you at the dock or train station with your tickets and such. And era of more dignified travel experiences than the common day. Modest wear to bindings of diaries (rubbing to edges, age-toning to paper, hinges delicate). Paper somewhat age-toned. Withal, a VG collection. Papers printed on buff paper. Diaries handwritten on small notebooks, various colored (mainly black, blue and red) flexible leatherette or pebbled/embossed cloth bindings. Paper title labels to bindings, some with gilt edges. Average diary size: 6" x 4". 31 small handwritten vacation trip diaries, 5 documents printed recto-only. In addition to the diaries are five documents, including his last will and testament, the inventory and appraisement of his estate, and a partially complete application for membership in the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, lis [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Marbling. 8vo. contemporary quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards, all edges stained red, red leather spine label. 224 pages. II. Verbesserte und vermehrte auflage. Mit anhang verzierung der buchsnitte. Second edition, improved and enhanced from the first edition published in 1885. This second edition of Halfer's famous marbling guide was the first to contain original samples and ten plates containing 35 marbled specimens. The traditional techniques of paper marbling were given new life in the late nineteenth century by this book and its extremely important author. In the handbook, Halfer introduces new methods, material and patterns of marbling that sparked a revival of the art amongst bookbinders and craftsmen. Halfer's innovations are based in scientific research, and his guidebook reflects his interest in the chemistry of colors and the physical nature of marbling sizes. As Richard Wolfe states in Marbled Paper: Its History, Technique and Patterns, "Halfer's influence in the art of marbling can not be overestimated." (See Wolfe, pp. 124-130).         Three etchings by John Sloan for the series of etchings entitled Westminster Abbey

N.P.: n.p., 1891. Newton, A. Edward. broadsides. John Sloan (1871-1951) was forced to drop out of school at the age of 16 due to the mental breakdown of his father. He got a job as a cashier at Porter and Coates, a local stationery store where he met A. Edward Newton, a fellow employee. When Newton established his own stationery business in 1890, he hired Sloan. Sloan designed greeting cards and calendars, and etchings which were used in various gift books published by Newton. Peter Morse, in his catalogue of Sloan prints, describes one of John Sloan's earliest efforts as this Westminster Series of 13 etchings and provides great detail, noting that only one complete surviving example of the booklet and etchings has survived to his knowledge which is held by The Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Delaware Art Museum holds signed copies of the etchings through the kind donation of Helen Farr Sloan. Any of these early Sloan works are extremely scarce. We have the following three etchings from this series: Morse 13. The West Front. Morse 17. Saint Erasmus' Doorway. Morse 21. The Poets Corner. Morse notes that A. Edward Newton's name does not appear anywhere in the booklet or on the etchings, but assigns them to Newton on their similarity to other projects executed by Sloan for Newton. The three ethings have been removed from an older framing (By Schneider Art Galleries of Seattle) and measure 7 5/8 x 5 7/8 inches with the etching itself varying in size. There are remnants of glue along the top edge of the white outer border where they were mounted and framed. The margins of the outer border are foxed and stained in places. One etching has notes in pencil beneath the etching giving instructions to the framer. The etchings themselves are well preserved.

The exceedingly rare first Hungarian edition of Adam Smith's lardmark work 'Wealth of Nations', constituting one of the very earliest Eastern-European translations of the work (Polish 1927; Czech 1928; Romanian 1934)."Polya, although a lawyer, had a particular interest in economics and a sufficient grasp of English through his work with an international insurance firm to be able to cope with Smith's English text. For the present translation, he collaborated with the Hungarian civil servant Lukács Enyedi (1845-1906), who played a significant role in the promotion of economics as an independent discipline in Hungarian universities." (National Library of Scotland). The noted economist, politician and banker Gyula Kautz (1829-1909) made a lengthy introduction to the present work, which later was published separately. In it he describes Smith's life and work, and his position as the "founder of economic science", putting his work into its historical context and offering a critical appraisal of his significance and his influence on 19th century economics and political theorists. Kautz was governor-general of the central bank of Hungary (the Osztrák-Magyar Bank) from 1893-1900, and the economics department of Budapest University is today named after him.OCLC only locates one copy (In The National Library of Scotland which states that the only other known copy of this translation is located at the Hungarian National Library). Not in any of the major bibliographies

Stuttgart: Wilhelm Leo, 1891. contemporary quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards, all edges stained red, red leather spine label. Marbling. 8vo. contemporary quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards, all edges stained red, red leather spine label. 224 pages. 124-130). Rubbed along hinges and edges.

II. Verbesserte und vermehrte auflage. Mit anhang verzierung der buchsnitte. Text in German. Second edition--the first to be illustrated--of this seminal work on marbling by the Budapest based bookbinder and marbler, Josef Halfer. It was first published, without specimen papers in 1885. "The Halfer system is so important that marbling history is broken at this point, and referred to as pre-Halferian and post-Halferian marbling. The advantages of the Halfer system were two-fold: freed of the laborious preparation of colors, and with standardized colors, marblers could produce more work; and secondly, the use of carragheen size allowed finer detail in marbling" (Easton, Marbling, A History, pp. 78-9). See also R. Wolfe, Marbled Paper, 1990, pp. 124-30. From the reference library of the Zaehnsdorf Company with a commemorative booklabel loosely inserted. With the bookplate of the Zaehnsdorf Company.         A BRAVE BLACK REGIMENT or THE HISTORY OF THE MASSACHUSETTS 54TH REGIMENT

1891, first edition hardcover, A BRAVE BLACK REGIMENT or THE HISTORY OF THE MASSACHUSETTS 54TH REGIMENT combined with six letters and envelopes, sent to Capt. Luis F Emilio, along with a signature of Captain Luis Emilio, dated October 4th, 1864, Morris Island, South Carolina, all as shown.  Emilio was the ranking officer after the charge at Battery Fort Wagner, Morris Island, South Carolina against the Confederate Rebel Army defending the Charleston area.  Two of the envelopes have the words "Colored Regiment" on the address and are sent to Emilio at Port Royal, South Carolina.  [Of 700 letters found in his archives, only these two had "Colored Regiment" on them].  The three letters all contain very important critical information concerning the famous African American regiment.  First letter mentions the actual attack and charge on Fort Wagner and how Capt. Emilio escaped unharmed.  Also mentioned in this letter is his offer of a Majors commission in another regiment in SC that he in fact refuses and stays for three more years with the 54th and fights in many incredibly dangerous engagements.  Another letter mentions the back pay now received by the colored soldiers and how their families must of suffered of want during the long wait for equal pay.  All are historic  letters that include references to Abraham Lincoln, Governor Andrews (four times), Capt./Colonel Robert Shaw, Lt. Col. Wendell Holmes of the 20th Mass., Col. Littlefield, Capt./Lt. Col./Colonel Hallowell, Captain Coggswell, Capt. Dave Sawyer, Capt. Alfred F Walcott, and other historic information.  Rare first edition hardcover volume is in very good condition overall, the letters are laid in on back of frontispiece which has been replaced with a facsimile of Medal of Honor recipient William Harvey Carney who saved the flag during the charge made famous in the movie "Glory".  Other letters are laid in on front fly and second fly.  Old embossed stamp states the book was once the property of Dr. I Victor Rouge.  All else is complete, tight, very good, one small nip to spine that has an old repair, small spot on cover boards, other light imperfections.  All is now protected in a Mylar wrap.  All fold out maps and a complete roster of the 54th are included.  Luis F Emilio served in the Mass 23rd and then was requested by Colonel Shaw to join the 54th.  Any officer of a colored regiment was given no quarter by Confederates.  Brave soldiers and officers indeed, and certainly staunch abolitionists who fought with much valor.  Ask any questions.
