        The Aboriginal Portfolio]

[Philadelphia 1836 - 18 1/4 x 11 inches). Blue upper wrapper to original part number 8 bound as title, 72 hand-coloured lithographed plates after Lewis by Lehman & Duval, bound without the three letterpress broadside prospectus Advertisement leaves to parts 1-3. (Occasional expert repairs.). Bound to style in dark green quarter morocco over contemporary patterned cloth-covered boards First edition. Scarcer than McKenney and Hall's 'History of the Indian Tribes', Prince Maximilian's 'Reise in das Innere von Nord-America' or Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio', Lewis' work records the dress of the Potawatomi, Winnebago, Shawnee, Sioux, Miami, Fox, Iowa and other tribes at treaties of Prairie du Chien, Fort Wayne, Fond du Lac and Green Bay. Publication of the work was costly and time consuming. The work was originally issued in 10 parts with 8 plates per number in printed wrappers. The publisher was forced into bankruptcy while part nine was in the press, however, reducing the edition and forcing part ten to be just barely finished and sparsely distributed. A projected eleventh part would have contained "Historical and Biographical Description of the Indians," but was never completed. The title and three advertisement leaves are therefore the only text in the work, excluding that on the wrappers. Copies are found with 72 plates (as here, being the first 9 numbers), others with 77 and occasionally 80. Bennett p.68; Field 936; Howes L315; Reese, Stamped With A National Character 23; Sabin 40812. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Stum_Ma_Nu: A Flat-Head Boy

F.W. Greenough, Philadelphia 1836 - Portrait. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Page measures 20.5" x 14.25" Beautiful portrait from the folio edition of McKenney and Hall's "History of the Indian Tribes of North America". As Superintendent of the Indian Trade Bureau, Thomas McKenney wanted to document the rapidly disappearing culture of the American natives. He activated the project, sponsored by the War Department, by commissioning writer James Hall and Charles Bird King, a renowned American portraitist. King painted the prominent Indians while they visited Washington D.C. as treaty delegates. Most of the original oil paintings were destroyed by fire in the Smithsonian Museum in 1865. These lithographs, published 1842-58, are all that remain and are still hailed as one of the best visual records of influential Native Americans of the nineteenth century. Stum_Ma_Nu was from the Chinook, or Flatheads, tribe of Washington near the Columbia River. Overall toning and offsetting. Slight stain along right edge. Small chips to lower left and upper right corners. One of many Native American portraits in our collection.

London, Fisher, Son & Co., [1836–7]. 2 vols. of 3, large 4to, pp. [iv], 80; 76 pp. with engraved additional titles and 75 engraved plates. A very good copy in nineteenth-century diaper calf, backstrips gilt with green labels, covers, board edges and turn-ins all gilt-rolled, edges and endpapers marbled. Joints and board edges lightly worn, head of vol. 1 backstrip chipped, still quite handsome. First edition. “This work formed the first part of Fisher’s projected series "The Turkish Empire Illustrated", and it appeared in 30 parts of four plates each... The great majority of the views are by W. H. Bartlett, who travelled extensively in the Levant. These drawings must have been made on his first journey in 1834–5; this seems to be the first book in which any of Bartlett’s Eastern drawings appear. The third volume [not present] includes plates after drawings by Thomas Allom, who must have travelled in the Levant c. 1836–7. The text is by John Carne, well-known as the author of Letters from the East” (Blackmer). Blackmer 291. Röhricht 1690. Weber 1125.

History of British Fishes. WITH: A History of British Birds. WITH: Bell's British Reptiles

1836. First Edition . YARRELL, William. A History of British Fishes. Two volumes. WITH: A History of British Birds. Three volumes. WITH: BELL, Thomas. A History of British Reptiles. London: John Van Voorst, 1836, 1843, 1849. Together, six volumes. Octavo, late 19th-century straight-grain dark green morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $3200.First editions of Yarrell's two great natural histories, together with the second edition of Bell's work on British reptiles, profusely illustrated with over 900 fine wood engravings, in handsome uniform morocco-gilt bindings by E. Riley & Son.“These works are compiled on the same plan; they contain accurate figures, with accompanying descriptions, of every known variety of British fish or bird; and they have from the first taken their position as the standard authorities on the subject in our language. Few books on natural history are more agreeable to the general reader: the style is ever pleasant, and the truth with which he describes the habits of the birds is such as might have been expected from the keen sportsman who had so often watched their motions when at liberty in their native haunt” (Allibone, 2882). Appearing later than Thomas BewickÂ’s famous History of British Birds (1797), YarrellÂ’s History boasts “a text of greater ornithological interest than Bewick's” (Knight, 163). The History of British Fishes is “indispensable in every English angler's library as a work of reference” (Westwood & Satchell, 244). “In point of accuracy of description and the homely truthfulness of his account of the habits of birds, Mr. Yarrell has had no equal” (Allibone, 2882). Also a dental surgeon-and “for a long period the only capable surgeon who applied scientific surgery to diseases of the teeth” (DNB)-Bell, then professor of zoology at KingÂ’s College, first published his survey of British reptiles in 1839. Lowndes, 3015. Birds: Zimmer, 697-98; Nissen, 182. Fishes: Westwood & Satchell, 243-44. Sage, 243. Thacher, 590. Armorial bookplates.Text and plates quite clean.         Abr'm Prescott's Confession of the Murder of Mrs. Sally Cochran...

1836. "Oh! Lust, Accursed Lust! 'Twas This for Which I Did the Deed" [Broadside]. [Murder]. Private Individual at the Bar. Abr'm Prescott's Confession of the Murder of Mrs. Sally Cochran of Pembroke, N.H.--June 23, 1833. [Concord, NH.?]: S.n., 1836. 17" x 11-1/2" broadside. Two-columns of verse in twenty stanzas within woodcut ornamental border, text headed by large woodcut vignette of a coffin. Light browning and a few minor stains, faint horizontal and vertical fold line, chipping to edges, section lacking from bottom margin, just touching bottom right corner of border, a few tears along fold lines with no loss to text, later repairs to verso. * Abraham Prescott was found guilty of the murder of Sally Cochran in two separate trials held in Concord in September 1834 and September 1835. Despite a well-crafted insanity defense, he was sentenced to be hanged on December 23, 1835, in Hopkinton, New Hampshire. The execution was postponed to January 6, 1836. The verse account in this broadside presents the murder as a crime of passion: "Oh! lust, accursed lust! 'twas this for which I did the deed; Forfeiting heaven, and life, and bliss, Forfeiting all I need." See McDade, The Annals of Murder 769.         Letter from Sydney, many references to early life in colonial Glebe...

1836. Single sheet of laid paper, 318 x 340 mm., folded to letter size, written in cross hatch, old folds with postal stamps for Sydney, Liverpool and London. Long manuscript letter from Mrs Harriet Betts to her sister in London, containing good detail of colonial social activities and local events in Glebe. The letter was written over the course of two months, with the commencement date of December 10 1835 and concluded on the 8 February the following year. Harriet Betts (1780-1852), was married to John Betts of Glebe, her letter was written from Minusnarra Cottage and there is much detail of social activities in the colony. Finer points of the letter include a description of a picnic party to the North shore attended by her daughter Harriot (which involved a horse-back ride), a boat trip to the Medway currently in the harbour, where the captain served them 'a handsome cold collation with champagn' after which they went round to the Heads and landed, experiencing splendid views, collecting shells and ascending rocks before an excellent dinner with more Champaign. The neighbours of the Betts, Mr & Mrs Graham of Hereford House are duly mentioned in regards to the picnic. They also visited Mrs 'B' and 'saw her splendid mansion over it is the handsomest in the Colony & will when entirely finished cost 8 to 10 thousand...' Visitors to Mrs Betts included a Mrs Dowling 'a pretty engaging young woman married to Judge Dowlings nephew, they have a handsome cottage at Woolloomoolloo & one little boy' also 'an Aunt of Mrs Baker's who was wrecked in the Enchantress & lost all her clothes & Piano'.Minusnarra cottage appears to be a temporary residence, as Harriet lists in her letter a selection of household items she would like shipped, she express's the hope that the 'cottage we mean to begin building after this rainy season' is ready when the goods arrive. Harriet Betts is recorded as dying in Kew Cottage, on Glebe Point Road, Kew Cottage was built circa 1835 and demolished by fire in 1907.As the dates and postmarks indicate, this letter was carried aboard the convict transport Norfolk on her return journey, departing on 11 February 1836. Small loss from the seal being removed and several repairs with tape.

Memoirs of the Life, Public and Private Adventures, of Madame Vestris

1836. Signed. (VESTRIS, Eliza) GRIFFINHOOFE, Arthur, alleged pseudonym of COLMAN, George. Memoirs of the Life, Public and Private Adventures, of Madame Vestris; Formerly of the Theatre Royal San Carlos; and Now of the Theatres Royal Drury Lane & Covent Garden. London: John Duncombe, circa 1836. Octavo, contemporary full brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. $1800.Early edition of this biography of one of 19th-century LondonÂ’s most famous and controversial actresses, extra-illustrated with an autograph signed letter by Eliza Vestris, as well as dozens of color plates and black-and-white illustrations related to VestrisÂ’ life.At the beginning of the 19th century, opera singer and actress Eliza Vestris was one of the best known stars of the London stage. “Possessor of ‘one of the most luscious of low voices,Â’ great sprightliness and vivacity, a beautiful face, and ‘an almost faultless figure,” she made her debut in 1815 in an Italian opera at the KingÂ’s Theatre (DNB). From that point, she moved on to bigger and more noteworthy roles, including dramatic speaking parts, so-called “breeches” parts, and a wide variety of singing roles in which she always excelled. This work, though containing a number of scandalous and unproven anecdotes, was quite popular in its day and remains a valuable account due to its contemporary publication. Small chip to closely mounted letter, only occasional foxing and soiling to extra plates, light expert restoration to binding. A most desirable extra-illustrated copy in near-fine condition.

Historical memoirs of his own time

Richard Bentley, London 1836 - In four volumes. With an engraved portrait frontispiece to each volume, and two further engraved plates. [Bound uniformly with:] WRAXALL, N. W. Posthumous memoirs of his own time. London. Richard Bentley, 1836. Second edition. In three volumes. With an engraved portrait frontispiece to each volume, and three further engraved plates. Handsomely bound by Bayntun in recent brown half-morocco, plain blue cloth boards, spines richly gilt. Very slightest of wear to extremities, spines a trifle faded. Very light occasional foxing, else internally clean and crisp. A sumptuous set of the complete personal memoirs of travel writer, Sir Nathaniel William Wraxall (1751-1831). Historical memoirs first appeared in 1815, but was shortly thereafter revised and reissued due to numerous lawsuits claiming libel and a slew of negative reviews, indeed the Quarterly Review considered them nothing more than 'pompous gossip and inflated trash'. Wraxall thus decided to that the remainder of his memoirs be published posthumously. They would be printed in 1836 to greater success than the preceding volumes. Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine on reviewing Posthumous memoirs praised Wraxall's 'dexterous mind', comparing him with Boswell. The Gentleman's Magazine contributed to this positive stance stating that the volumes '.will not be considered as one of the ephemeral productions of the day, but.will be consulted by those who wish to obtain information relative to one of the most eventful and interesting periods of English history.'         Cheret, Jules - Quinquina Dubonnet.

Prijs: ?2.450,- (incl. lijst, excl. BTW/VAT).

JACQUES J. LYONS' FOURTEEN PRINTED AND MANUSCRIPT RECEIPTS FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SURINAMME JEWISH CHARITY FUND, FROM HIS LAST 2 YEARS AS A CANTOR THERE, 1836-1837

Paramaribo, The Nederlandsche Israelitische Gemeente 1836-37 - Original heavy rag paper. Collection consists of a 5"x 12" strip of 12 attached printed monthly coupons for the 12 months of 1837, each with what is presumably Lyons account nr (46) and with his name (Jacob Juda Lyons) and amount of contribution filled in, and a signature of of the treasurer at the bottom. Along the long edge of the strip of 12 coupons (clipped, perhaps removed from an accounts ledger as receipts) is printed in large font: "Bijdrage Ten Behoeve van het Armwezen der Nederlandsche Israelitische Gemeente" [Contribution to the Almsfund of the Dutch Jewish Community]. Also present is a separate coupon for February 1836, larger in size (8"x3") but with the same basic content, as well as a larger (7.5"x6") certificate dated 5597 (1837) from the AARME-KAS der Nederlandsche Israelitische Hoofd-Sijnagoge, [Charity Bureau of the Dutch Jewish Main Synagogue] in Suriname, documenting Lyons' contribution of 32.50 Guilders for what appears to be his membership (?) in the Synagogue as well as his offering. Lyons [his name more commonly written as Jacques Judah Lyons] (1813–1877) "was born in Surinam, Dutch Guiana on Menahem 25, 5573 (August 25, 1813). His parents, Judah Eleazar and Mary Asser Lyons, had emigrated to Surinam from Philadelphia in the early 1800s.Jacques began his career as a hazan in Surinam in Congregation Nevie Shalom, a synagogue founded by Spanish-Portuguese Jews. In 1836 he left for Philadelphia, his parents' home state, and was hired within a few months by Congregation Beth Shalome of Richmond, Virginia. He served Beth Shalome for two years, winning the high esteem of the congregation. In 1839, following the death of Rev. Isaac B. Mendez Seixas, he was elected Seixas' successor as minister of Congregation Shearith Israel of New York City. He married Grace Nathan, daughter of Seixas Nathan and Sarah Mendes Seixas in 1842. Jacques and Grace were blessed with three children: Julius J., Sarah, and Alfred. During his thirty-eight years of ministry, he became highly active in Jewish welfare and advocating Orthodox Judaism. He served as superintendent of the Shearith Israel's school, Polonies Talmud Torah; president of its benevolent society, Hebra Hased va-Emet; director of the Sampson Simson Jewish Seminary and Scientific Institute; and one of the founders of Jews Hospital, later renamed The Mount Sinai Hospital. In 1854, Jacques and Rabbi Abraham de Sola of Montreal collaborated in writing A Jewish Calendar for Fifty Years, a book that contained a comprehensive Jewish calendar, an essay on the Jewish calendar system, as well as historical information concerning Jewish communities in the United States, Canada, and the West Indies. Prior to 1861, and continuing to the end of his life, Jacques painstakingly gathered sources and information on United States Jewish history in the hopes of publishing his findings.Jacques died at the age of sixty-three on Elul 4, 5638, shortly before Rosh Hashanah (August 15, 1877). His funeral services were held on August 15, 1877 in Shearith Israel, and were conducted by his successor Rev. Dr. Henry Pereira Mendes, Rev. Dr. Abraham De Sola of Montreal, Rev. Samuel M. Isaacs of Congregations Shaarai Tefilla of New York, and Rev. Sabato Morais of Congregation Mikve Israel of Philadelphia. His niece through marriage, Emma Lazarus, wrote the poem "Rosh Hashanah, 5638" in his memory" (SocialArchive, 2015). From the collection of Rabbi David de Sola Pool, who, like Lyons, was also (later) a Rabbi at Shearith Israel and who authored the congregation's history, "An Old Faith in the New World: Portrait of Shearith Israel 1654-1954," which contains much about Lyons.

[Concord, NH.?: S.n., 1836. 17" x 11-1/2" broadside. $2,500. Sangene i Festen paa Kenilworth, romantisk Syngestykke i tre Acter.

Beautiful patterned paper over boards and lovely patterned end-papers. With the book plates of Eiler Høeg and Bøgh to indside of front board. With Eiler Høeg's owner's indscription to the original front free end-paper and a note underneath describing who the presentation-inscription is for. First and last leaves browned and brownspotted. Title-page re-enforced at inner hinge. A charming copy with Andersen's short but warm and exhaustive one-line presentation-inscription to bottom of title-page. A magnificent presentation-copy of the first edition of Andersen's famous operetta, which he based upon Walter Scott's novel and to which the music was composed by the great Weyse. The work contains Andersen's famous tribute-poem to America and is considered one of his best opererettas, in spite of the fact the he himself was not completely satisfied with it. The wonderful presentation-inscription in Andersen's own hand, which merely reads "For/ the Mother" is arguably the shortest known presentation-inscription from him and portrays his extremely close and intimate relationship with his "mother", Signe Læssøe, who was closer to him than anyone else. Signe Læssøe (1781-1870) is remembered today because of her intimate friendship with Andersen, whom she met for the first time in 1828, when he was 23 years old. After she became a widow, the two began a lifelong correspondence, which spans the entire adult life of one of the most famous authors in the world, from his first attempts as a poet until he died an international celebrity.Signe Læssøe was a woman of the enlightened middle class, who opened her heart and home to the young poet who would later become one of the most celebrated writers of all time. Her motherly air and feelings towards Andersen as well as her solid critical sense and high standards of quality meant that she became one of the most important people in Andersen's life. Together with his benefactor, Collin, Signe Læssøe more than any other influenced Andersen's development, both personal and professional, and helped him find the genre of writing for which he would later be world-famous.Andersen himself states in his memoirs that Signe Læssøe, together with Collin, was the person that meant the most to him and to his development as an author. He writes about her as the most loving of "mothers" and and intimate confidante. She was compassionate, involved, and encouraging, and she helped turn Andersen's eye to the beauties of nature and the poetry of life, sculpting the great writer he was to become. She believed in his qualities as a poet and more than any other helped him become who he was - one of the greatest and most compassionate authors in the world. The shortness of the inscription bears witness to their intimate relationship - there was need for no other words than "for the mother", for that was what she was, with all what that holds - the person who listened to him, who gave him advise both personal and professional, who helped him become the person and writer that he was. And had it been signed in his name, all would have been different, for what mother would not know that this was from her child? As such, the present presentation-inscription is probably one of the most intimate Andersen-presentations that we will ever find and one of the most beautiful - in its shortness it says it all, much more than word upon word would be able to, even Andersen's words. _________________________________________________________________The present work written by Andersen was set to music by the renowned composer Weyse and constitutes Weyse's last operetta and contains one of his finest ouvertures. Almost all famous Danish composers have composed music to texts by Andersen, including such international fames as C.E.F. Weyse and Carl Nielsen. Weyse was the grand composer of the generation before Andersen and thus got to know Andersen as a young man. As such, Weyse came to play more the role as a benefactor to the young author. Andersen thus accepted a cooperated between the two based very much upon the conditions of the composer. The result was splendid, namely "Festen paa Kenilworth", which was based upon Walter Scott's novel from 1821. Andersen, however, was never completely satisfied with the result, perhaps because he let Weyse take the lead, and he thus chose only to publish the songs from the play, merely six days after the play premiered. These songs have become very famous and include "Hyrden græsser sine Faar" and the famous tribute-song to America. BFN: 285.
