Qua-Ta-Wa-Pea or Col. Lewis: A Shawanee Chief

Philadelphia: E.C. Biddle, 1836. unbound. very good. Lehman and Duval. Portrait. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Page measures 20" x 14". Beautiful portrait from the folio edition of McKenney and Hall's "History of the Indian Tribes of North America". As Superintendent of the Indian Trade Bureau, Thomas McKenney wanted to document the rapidly disappearing culture of the American natives. He activated the project, sponsored by the War Department, by commissioning writer James Hall and Charles Bird King, a renowned American portraitist. King painted the prominent Indians while they visited Washington D.C. as treaty delegates. Most of the original oil paintings were destroyed by fire in the Smithsonian Museum in 1865. These lithographs, published 1842-58, are all that remain and are still hailed as one of the best visual records of influential Native Americans of the nineteenth century. Qua-ta-wa-pea had fought on the side of the colonies against England and was rewarded with a visit to Washington where he met President Jefferson and a 40,000 acre tract of land. The deed was taken back from him by the federal government in 1831. Light scattered foxing, slight stain along right edge. Light offsetting and small chip to lower left corner. One of many Native American portraits in our collection.

        Switzerland

London - George Virtue, 1836 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. An illustrated study of the history and geography of Switzerland. First editions. Illustrated throughout with one hundred and six plates taken from views by W. H. Bartlett, including one folding map. William Henry Bartlett (March 26, 1809 September 13, 1854) was a British artist, best known for his numerous steel engravings. Bartletts primary concern was to render lively impressions of actual sights, as he wrote in the preface to The Nile Boat (London, 1849). Many views contain some ruin or element of the past including many scenes of churches, abbeys, cathedrals and castles, and Nathaniel Parker Willis described Bartlett's talent thus: Bartlett could select his point of view so as to bring prominently into his sketch the castle or the cathedral, which history or antiquity had allowed. Complete in two volumes. Condition: In half-calf bindings. Externally rubbed, with wear to the extremities and discolouration to the boards. Slight loss to spine labels. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright, with scattered foxing throughout. Overall: GOOD ONLY..

Book of Gems The Poets and Artists of Great Britain. Edited by S. C. Hall. [ 2 volumes]. The Modern Poets and Artists of Great Britain. [1 volume]

London:: Saunders and Otley, 1836, 1837, 1838. FIRST EDITIONS. 3 volumes. 8vo, 210 x 131 mms., pp. xvi, 304 [305 - 308 facsimiles of poets' autographs]; xvi, 304 [305 - 308 facsimiles of poets' autographs]; xvi, 304 [305 - 308 facsimiles of poets' autographs], engraved title-pages, engraved vignettes and head-pieces throughout all three volumes, contemporary diced roan, spines ornately gilt in compartments, all edges gilt; lacks labels, but a very good set. Hall (1800 - 1889) was probably one of the busiest and most industrious authors, compilers, and editors of the 19th century. Peter Mandler in ODNB concludes his entry on Hall, with this observation: "And yet his life as a whole stands as a model of Victorian energy and uprightness, and his work as editor and animateur did much to popularize art and literature and thus to support the mass market for high culture so characteristic of the middle third of the nineteenth century." He was careful to use contemporary or recent artists for the illustrations - Constable, Gainsborough, Landseer, Reynolds. among others. To this one must add that he was also regarded as something of a prig with a high-mindedness that was more judgmental than practical; he was almost certainly the model for Mr. Pecksniff in Dickens' Martin Chuzzlewit.

Edinburgh (& Glasgow): Richard Weston and Sons (& Richard Griffin and Company). 1836. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, 1836. Half calf 12mo, 312pp. Dark brown smooth calf with marbled boards, marbled edges. A slight bloating to the volume, as from being stored in a basement, but nothing extreme. A page of remarks, reprinted below, appear opposite the title page, noting the previous owner's association with the author. "During the years 1826-27-28, I lodged in Lothian Stree, Edin: & saw a good deal of Mr. Weston, a very intelligent & highly respected bookseller in that street. Just before I left Edin. after taking my (segue?) of M. D. in 1828m he told methat he was about to emigrate. My surprise, therefore, was great when I found him in the old shop during my visit to Edin, with my wife, in 1837. This book will explain his apparant inconsistency. -Henry Yates Whytehead, M. D." Whytehead went on to become a notable doctor. His signature appears on the front endpaper, but aside from his introduction, the volume remains bright, clean and unmarked. A rare volume which has not appeared at auction since 1982.

War Dance of the Sauks and Foxes

Philadelphia: F.W. Greenough, 1836. unbound. very good. J.T. Bowen. View. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Page measures 14" x 19.25". Scene from the folio edition of McKenney and Hall's "History of the Indian Tribes of North America". This war dance scene served as the frontispiece to the "The Indian Tribes of North America" and also to one of the earliest western travel books, "Travels in North America during 1834, 1835, and 1836" (Volume 2), by Charles Augustus Murray. Some toning and a few chips to lower right corner. Some tape residue along top and bottom edges. One of many Native American portraits in our collection.

E.C. Biddle, Philadelphia 1836 - Beautiful portrait from the folio edition of McKenney and Hall's "History of the Indian Tribes of North America".         NORTH AMERICAN HERPETOLOGY; OR A DESCRIPTION OF THE REPTILES INHABITING THE UNITED STATES (3 Volumes - First edition)

Philadelphia: J Dobson, 1836. The scarce first edition: vols. I (1836), II (1838) & III (1838); pp. vol. I: viii, [9]-132 + 27 plates; vol. II: iv, [5] - 130 + 30 plts; vol. III: vi, [9]-122 + 30 plts (as in other copies there is the usual error in pagination and order of the prelims to vol. III. where pp v/vi is not present, but complete). The 87 lithographic plates are all hand-coloured with the exception of plt. 26 to vol. I, some heightened with gum arabic. Fine provenance with contemporary Library of Congress labels to the front paste-down ("exchanged from duplicate Library of Congress" oval stamps to the verso of the title pages and one/two other prelimary pages or front blank, otherwise contents unmarked) Half contemporary polished calf bindings with marbled boards, black title labels, gilt. Original marbled endpapers. This set has four more plates than given by Bennett (U.S. Color Plate Books 1800-1900) and slightly different pagination for vols. I & II - Bennett states 123 text pages and 23 coloured plates for vol. I, whereas our copy has 27 colour plates and 132 text pages, and for vol. II Bennett states 125 text pages, but our copy has 130 text pages, the number of plates at 30 is the same; vol. III conforms with Bennett. Certainly other first edition sets have appeared at auction that also differ, but with less rather than more plates and text pages, some have supplementary plates. It would appear that the first edition was an evolving entity. The plates are in very good clean condition with their original tissue guards (except 2 and the tissue guard to plt 18, vol. I with a largish chip); plt. 18 to vol. II with very slight partial crease. Several text pages very slightly marked. The bindings with some general wear and rubbing, lightly chipped to head/tail of the spines, leather to joints cracked, but all boards firmly attached, some joints inconspicuously and professionally strengthened using archival materials, in a reversible manner. A very good set. Bibliographic note: a fourth volume was published in 1840 (Bennett states 1838) but this is exceedingly rare. "...at about the same time Holbrook became dissatisfied with the entire edition and recalled it. Since volume IV had just been issued, it was the easiest to recall, and, indeed only a small portion of the stock may have been released at all." How many sets were recalled is unknown but it had the effect of making the first edition scarcer still. Bennett writes "If a correct 4 volume first edition could be assembled, it would be extremely valuable...It is ten times rarer, right and complete, than the giant folio Audobon". In the introduction to vol. II Holbrook writes "As the object of this work is truth, or a wish to determine, with as much certainty as possible, the different species of the reptiles of this country, ...I will avail myself of every opportunity of correcting such errors as I may fall into..." This fastidious, almost obsessive nature, explains Holbrook's decision to recall the first edition - and also perhaps the variation in pagination and number of plates.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. 4to.

This Print of T. Goosey, Huntsman, to the Belvoir Hounds, is dedicated to the Lord Forrester, master of the hunt

[London: circa 1836]. Lithograph, hand-coloured, by J.W. Giles, on india paper mounted. 12 7/8 x 16 1/4 inches. 19 1/8 x 23 1/2 inches. An excellent example of this print after Davis, animal painter to King George IV and Queen Victoria. From the 'Hunters Annual' series (part 1, plate 2) A very fine equestrian portrait, full of movement and excitement, from a series that eventually included sixteen prints, issued in four parts. The hounds are also very carefully observed and qualify as canine portraits in their own right. "Richard Barrett Davis was the son of Richard Davis, huntsman to George III's private harriers. Initially self-taught, his ability came to the notice of the King who arranged for him to be given proper training... He exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy for over fifty years, his first exhibit being in 1802. In 1831 he was appointed animal painter to George IV and later Queen Victoria." (Charles Lane British Racing Prints p.98). Mellon British Sporting and Animal Prints p. 63; Schwerdt I, p.258.
