The second edition, with a printing of only 3,000 copies. The title translates as: "The inquiry, questions illustrating the meaning of the Holy Scriptures. A good thing for Sunday Schools. Book I. About the story of Jesus and his miracles." This copy is from the library of James F. Hunnewell (1832- 1910), with his bookplate. Hunnewell was a Boston book collector and bibliographer. He published a BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS in 1869. His father, James Hunnewell, became familiar with the islands when the ship he was on was sold to Hawaiian chiefs; Hunnewell was responsible for collecting the payment in sandalwood and then selling it in China. As a result, he spent several months in the islands and became friendly with the local populace. In 1820 he arrived in Honolulu as second mate on the brig Thaddeus, the ship bearing the first American missionaries and the first printing press. He later developed a significant business in Hawaii which grew into the commercial house later known as C. Brewer & Company. Though he returned to Charlestown, Masachusetts, he spent the rest of his life actively engaged in exporting goods to Hawaii and California.       London: House of Commons, 28 July, 1836. Tall quarto, 40pp. with handcoloured lithographed sheet; bound in splendid full crimson crushed morocco with gilt lettering by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Letter of instruction to William Light. A significant publication in the early history of South Australia, being the first report of the Colonization Commission tasked with selling land in the infant colony to provide the capital for colonial development. The sale of land in South Australia owed much to the 'science of colonial management' propounded by Edward Wakefield Gibbon, and within a decade was confounded with difficulty as the colony accrued massive debt from the British government. This report publishes important correspondence relating to the early survey, including the letters of instruction to Surveyor-General William Light and his assistants (including Boyle Travers Finniss). The lithographed map by Arrowsmith is titled "Part of Southern Australia from the 132 to 141 degree of East Longitude".From the library of Dr. Robert Edwards, AO, in a remarkably bold and handsome binding by master English bookbinders Sangorski and Sutcliffe.

        SKETCH OF THE SEMINOLE WAR, AND SKETCHES DURING A CAMPAIGN. By a Lieutenant of the Left Wing

      Charleston: Dan J. Dowling, 1836.. [2],[6],311,[1]pp. Antique half calf and marbled boards. A couple of small ink notations to the outer margin of text, light foxing. Untrimmed, very good. One of the rarest personal narratives of the second Seminole War of 1835-36. The volume was absent from the Streeter collection, which contained some of the rarest Seminole War material. It is also lacking from several otherwise exhaustive collections of southern military history. The author was an officer in the South Carolina volunteer regiment commanded by Col. A.H. Brisbane. James Servies, in the new edition of his BIBLIOGRAPHY OF WEST FLORIDA, identifies the author as W.W. Smith on the basis of a NILES WEEKLY REGISTER article about the book. Smith gives a general history of the beginning of the war, then proceeds to a narrative of his experience with the South Carolina volunteers between the formation of the regiment in January 1836 and the termination of their service at St. Augustine in May. He gives a lively firsthand account of the campaign and his part in it, with interesting observations on the land, natural history, and Indians, as well as military details. As the inscription indicates, the Capriccio was composed for the visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to Woburn Abbey, the residence of the Duke of Bedford, on July 26-29, 1841. According to the Morning Post (July 28, 1841), Giovanni Puzzi (1792-1876), the most celebrated horn virtuoso of his time, was contracted to superintend "the band and all musical arrangements" for this special occasion. Elizabeth Bradley Strauchen, "Giovanni Puzzi: His Life and Work..." (D. Phil thesis, University of Oxford, 2000), p. 85. Schira's Capriccio, which showcased Puzzi and his small "band" of wind instruments, was probably one such "musical arrangement." As the present score and parts include additional performance markings, corrections, cuts, and other signs of use, it is possible that Puzzi and his musicians performed from them. Puzzi was "principal horn at the KingÂ’s Theatre, the Philharmonic Society (1821–4) and the Concert of Ancient Music (1823–6), as well as at provincial festivals; he was also the first professor of horn at the Royal Academy of Music, where he played in the Royal Academic Concerts. He also organized a chamber music series in 1837, known as Classical Concerts for Wind Instruments... [Puzzi] enjoyed a virtual monopoly of private and benefit concerts for over 20 years. The large body of works composed and arranged by Puzzi formed the basis of his solo repertory, and reflects both the extreme popularity of the Italian Opera and the fascination for virtuoso performers that was then characteristic of London musical life. His works include a concerto, fantasias and numerous vocal arrangements with horn obbligato (MSS in GB-Lbl). These compositions, and those written for him by contemporaries, represent the apex of chromatic hand horn technique in the cor-mixte style." "After a brief visit to Paris in 1842, Schira was appointed director of music at the newly opened Princess's Theatre in London. In 1843 he conducted a short season under Alfred Bunn's management at Covent Garden, and in the following year joined Bunn at Drury Lane on the resignation of Benedict as conductor. He remained there intermittently until 1847, conducting both foreign adaptations and a number of English operas... Schira conducted Bunn's 1852 season at Drury Lane, but thereafter he devoted himself to teaching singing... while continuing to compose... He was totally opposed to any style other than the Italian, which led the Musical Times to declare, on his death, that ‘his music suffered mainly from the disavantage of being out of fashionÂ’... Despite his narrow musical tastes, Schira was, after Verdi, one of the outstanding Italian opera composers of his generation. Arditi, who conducted the première of Niccolò de' Lapi, justly described the work as ‘a patriotic opera Â… written in the genuine Italian style Â… fervid, melodious, and free from pretence or assumptionÂ’. The full account of the voyage comprises two discrete publications since the Historical and Hydrographical sections were separately published by different publishers. The expedition sailed to the Pacific via Cape Horn, and reached Sitka on the Northwest Coast and spent over a month there. They continued north to Unalaska and the Aleutian Islands, before sailing into the Bering Sea and surveying the coast of the Alaskan Peninsula. As winter approached the expedition turned southward to the Caroline group of Micronesia where they stayed for most of 1828, followed by Guam and the Philippines. The return voyage stopped at St Helena Island in the south Atlantic before finishing at Kronstadt in September 1829.The 51 plates in the atlas, many of them comprising two images, were lithographed by the Parisian specialist printer Engelmann from the original drawings. Working in Paris from 1816, Godefroy Engelmann was the pioneer and best exponent of the new techniques of lithography in book illustration that gradually replaced older methods from the 1820s onwards. In this copy the plates are examples of the more desirable form identified by Lada-Mocarski, printed on fine India paper and mounted into the atlas rather than printed directly onto thick paper.Renowned for their exceptional detail and finesse, the plates are rivalled only by those of Choris as the finest nineteenth-century depictions of the Pacific. Occasional autograph corrections, annotations in Italian and English, performance markings, and cuts in black ink and pencil in Italian and English. Scored for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn obbligato, 2 horns, and bassoon, the work comprises several interlinked movements, which incorporate two British national songs, "God Save the Queen" (the national anthem) and "Rule Brittania," as well as two variations and two short cadenzas for solo horn. As the inscription indicates, the Capriccio was composed for the visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to Woburn Abbey, the residence of the Duke of Bedford, on July 26-29, 1841. According to the Morning Post (July 28, 1841), Giovanni Puzzi (1792-1876), the most celebrated horn virtuoso of his time, was contracted to superintend "the band and all musical arrangements" for this special occasion. Elizabeth Bradley Strauchen, "Giovanni Puzzi: His Life and Work..." (D. Phil thesis, University of Oxford, 2000), p. 85. Schira's Capriccio, which showcased Puzzi and his small "band" of wind instruments, was probably one such "musical arrangement." As the present score and parts include additional performance markings, corrections, cuts, and other signs of use, it is possible that Puzzi and his musicians performed from them. Puzzi was "principal horn at the King's Theatre, the Philharmonic Society (1821-4) and the Concert of Ancient Music (1823-6), as well as at provincial festivals; he was also the first professor of horn at the Royal Academy of Music, where he played in the Royal Academic Concerts. He also organized a chamber music series in 1837, known as Classical Concerts for Wind Instruments... [Puzzi] enjoyed a virtual monopoly of private and benefit concerts for over 20 years. The large body of works composed and arranged by Puzzi formed the basis of his solo repertory, and reflects both the extreme popularity of the Italian Opera and the fascination for virtuoso performers that was then characteristic of London musical life. His works include a concerto, fantasias and numerous vocal arrangements with horn obbligato (MSS in GB-Lbl). These compositions, and those written for him by contemporaries, represent the apex of chromatic hand horn technique in the cor-mixte style." "After a brief visit to Paris in 1842, Schira was appointed director of music at the newly opened Princess's Theatre in London. In 1843 he conducted a short season under Alfred Bunn's management at Covent Garden, and in the following year joined Bunn at Drury Lane on the resignation of Benedict as conductor. He remained there intermittently until 1847, conducting both foreign adaptations and a number of English operas... Schira conducted Bunn's 1852 season at Drury Lane, but thereafter he devoted himself to teaching singing... while continuing to compose... He was totally opposed to any style other than the Italian, which led the Musical Times to declare, on his death, that 'his music suffered mainly from the disavantage of being out of fashion'... Despite his narrow musical tastes, Schira was, after Verdi, one of the outstanding Italian opera composers of his generation. Arditi, who conducted the premiere of Niccolo de' Lapi, justly described the work as 'a patriotic opera written in the genuine Italian style fervid, melodious, and free from pretence or assumption'. Selvaggia, his masterpiece, is even more powerful: its through-composed texture sustains a consistent dramatic tension which clearly foreshadows the methods of Puccini." Twenty-four subjects on a folding sheet enclosed by printed paper boards with the title design and date (1836) on the upper board and a portrait of Tilt with '1836' on the wall behind him, on the lower board. With contemporary handcolored plates. Cohn, p. 47, who notes that this first edition was issued with uncolored plates, but that a few copies were issued with colored plates "but they are of very great rarity". The coloring on these plates is skillful, without bleed-thru to the reverse, and heightened with gum arabic, all characteristics of the original issue. The designs on the covers are uncolored, as called for. Wear to the lower spine, with light soil to the covers else this is a fine copy. Protected in a 19th century morocco solander case.

There is minor to moderate foxing, and the final half of the text is lightly stained at the top corner. The 1836-37 Reports of the Engineers is complete with two fold-out maps which were printed on very thin onion-skin paper. These two maps have been detached, and are misfolded, with minor tearing, as well as some foxing. A ready-made collection of the founding documents of this railroad company, which starts in Boston winding its way across the state where it enters New York State at West Stockbridge.. First Edition. Geistreiche Reisebeschreibung des Landschaftsgestalters, Schriftstellers und Abenteurers Fürst Hermann von Pückler-Muskau (1785 - 1871). Im Besonderen aufgrund der von ihm visionär gestalteten Landschaftsparks in Muskau und später in Branitz gilt Pückler-Muskau heute als genialer Landschaftskünstler, der in der Umsetzung seiner gestalterischen Konzepte seiner Zeit in mancher Hinsicht voraus war; vor allem seine durch großflächigem Umpflanzungen geschaffenen "Blickachsen" gelten als zukunftsweisende Elemente moderner Parkgestaltung. Eine Schwester im Geiste fand der "Parkomane" in seiner neun Jahre älteren Ehefrau Lucie von Hardenberg (1776 - 1854), Tochter des preußischen Staatskanzlers und Reformers Karl August von Hardenberg (1750 - 1822), die Pücklers Leidenschaft teilte und rückhaltlos unterstützte. Popularität erlangte Pückler ferner durch seine ausgedehnten Reisen, insbesondere in den Nahen und Mittleren Osten, dessen Kultur und Lebensweise er wie kaum ein anderer Zeitgenosse studierte. Sein Versuch, die Quellen des Nils zu erforschen, führte ihn 1838 bis in den Sudan, bis er südlich von Khartum schwer an Malaria erkrankte und den Rückweg nach Europa antreten mußte. Pückler blieb der morgenländischen Kultur ein Leben lang verbunden, so ließ er sich gern in orientalischer Tracht abbilden. Anlaß seiner ab 1826 unternommenen europäischen Reisen war die finanzieller Notlage, in die Pückler infolge seines Unsummen verschlingenden Muskauer Parkprojektes geraten war. Im Einvernehmen mit Lucie ließ er sich von dieser scheiden (blieb ihr aber bis zu ihrem Tode verbunden) und suchte im Ausland in den dortigen Adelskreisen nach einer guten Partie, um auf diese Weise sein Landschaftsprojekt vollenden zu können. Das Vorhaben führte zwar nicht zum Erfolg, doch gewann Pückler vor allem in England, Wales und Irland durch das Studium der dortigen Park- und Landschaftsgestaltung neue Inspirationen, die er in Muskau, später in Branitz umsetzte. Grundlage der "Briefe eines Verstorbenen" waren ursprünglich Pücklers Briefe an seine Frau, in denen er diese über seine Unternehmungen, gesellschaftlichen Kontakte, auch seine Amouren auf dem laufenden hielt; Lucie war es auch, die auf die Idee der Veröffentlichung dieser Korrespondenz kam, die Pücklers Ruhm als Reiseschriftsteller begründen sollte. Der zwischenzeitlich nahezu vergessene Pückler ist heute als Landschaftsvisionär, nicht zuletzt aber auch aufgrund seines unkonventionellen, bisweilen als tollkühn bezeichneten Lebenswandels, mit dem er die strenge - oft vorgespiegelte - Sittlichkeit seiner Zeit- und Standesgenossen konterkarierte, wieder wesentlich stärker in den Blickpunkt des öffentlichen und kulturellen Interesses geraten. Der Fernsehsender Arte widmete ihm am 1. und 9. März 2015 eine einstündige, mit Spielszenen angereicherte Dokumentation. Originalausgaben von Pücklers Briefen, Schriften und Reiseberichten die er unter den Pseudonymen "Der Verstorbene" und "Semilasso" veröffentlichte, sind heute nur noch selten anzutreffen.. First series: original dark green regular-patterned straight-grain morocco cloth, spines blocked and lettered in gilt. Second series: original rose-pink morocco cloth, sides blocked in blind with a central wreath, spine blocked in blind with a circular pattern, lettered and decorated in gilt over a panel of cloth stained black, yellow endpapers. Individually housed in matching green half morocco book-form slipcases, with chemises. First series with a little unobtrusive cloth repair to joints, front board of vol. I slightly cockled, small split to cloth at centre of rear joint of vol. II, front free endpaper in vol. I beginning to separate from following leaf; second series neatly rebacked with original spine laid down with loss of lower lettering panel, spine a little faded, inner hinges cracked but holding firm. Together, very occasional light spotting but generally clean, the plates with slight oxidisation as usual: a very good set. First series: frontispieces and 16 engraved plates. Second series: etched frontispiece, extra engraved title, and 8 engraved plates. With 2 plates by Cruikshank for later editions loosely inserted. Book plates of Frederic S. Clarke, the Dickens collector Robert Lloyd Henderson (plate dated 1932), and Alain de Suzannet (1882?-1950). First editions of Dickens's first books, both the first and second series, from the collection of Comte Alain de Suzannet, one of the finest ever assembled (sold at auction, Sotheby's, 1971, lot 5), having previously been in two similarly celebrated collections. Eckel's contention that there were two issues of the second series, distinguished by the presence or lack of the list of illustrations (present here) has lost force over the years. Sadleir was puzzled by it, and Smith, having scrutinized 18 copies, finds that no consistent states of binding or printing can be associated with early or late copies. Smith notes that Macrone was anxious to print it in time for Christmas and hurried it through the presses, leaving many mistakes uncorrected.

Generously and finely illustrated with copper engraved portraits of Walton and Cotton, Fishes painted from nature by James Inskipp, and fishing scenes by Thomas Stothard. Very occasional foxing, mostly marginal, sometimes to plates or pages adjoining plates. The text is from the 5th Edition, published in 1676, the last to be revised by Walton himself, with the variations of the four previous editions at the foot of each page. "...       Frankfurt am Main, in der Hermannschen Buchhandlung, 1816 (Bd. 4:) Siegmund Schmerber 1836. - Schwarze Halblederbände mit Rückenvergoldung, leicht berieben. Erste Ausgabe. Goedeke V,376,29,3 (3 Bände) und VII,240,11,5. Nur vereinzelt etwas fleckig, einige Falttabellen ragen schmal über den Schnitt hinaus und sind ebd. etwas angestaubt und rissig. Vollständig mit dem vierten Band, der vermutlich auch separat erschien, ist das Werk sehr selten, besonders in so guten Zustand. Der Titel ist etwas irreführend. Denn tatsächlich handelt es sich um eine Geschichte der mittelrheinischen Gegenden von der germanischen Vorzeit bis in die Gegenwart, von Vogt, dem Lehrer Metternichs, zur Stärkung der rheinischen, antipreußischen Position gedacht. Bd. 4 hat einen zweiten Titel: Geschichte des Verfalls und Untergang der Rheinischen Staaten des alten deutschen Reichs. (Ohne Ort 1833). - Der Historiker Nicolaus (Niclas) Vogt (1756-1836) wurde in der anregenden und freisinnigen Atmosphäre der Stadt Mainz ausgebildet und früh Professor der Geschichte an der dortigen Universität. "Zu seinen Hörern zählte auch Metternich, der ihm zeitlebens freundschaftlich verbunden blieb. Während der französischen Besatzung folgte Vogt dem kurfürstlichen Hof nach Aschaffenburg, war dort Schulinspektor und nach Heinses Tod Bibliothekar. Vogts Werk stand von Anbeginn unter dem Eindruck des Untergangs der alten europäischen Staatenordnung, als deren herausragende Zerstörer er Friedrich II. und später Napoleon ansah. In seinen Schriften begründete er staatsrechtlich, philosophisch und historisch ganz im Geiste der Restauration die Notwendigkeit eines rheinischen Staatenbundes als Gegengewicht zu Preußen, Österreich und dem nachrevolutionären Frankreich. With an autograph letter signed by the author to his publisher, tipped in at front pastedown, in which Emerson apologises for not yet having sent Munroe the manuscript as well as discussing his preferences for the finished book: "I was quite unexpectedly prevented from sending the manuscript yesterday morning. Print it on good paper, as good, I think, as Mr. Ripley's sermon which you showed me, though with smaller type".

Hodgkin was one of the distinguished pathologists connected with Guy's Hospital, where he served as demonstrator of morbid anatomy and curator of the museum from 1825-37. He was the first in England to pursue the lead of Bichat by discussing morbid anatomy from the standpoint of changes in tissue, and to give regular lecture courses in morbid anatomy. His Lectures on the Morbid Anatomy of the Serous and Mucous Membranes stimulated the study of tissue pathology in England. Hodgkin published only a few medical works during his brief medical career, which ended in 1837 after he failed to receive a promotion at Guy's Hospital; for the rest of his life he devoted himself to philanthropic pursuits. He is best known for his classic description of Hodgkin's lymphoma, contained in his paper "On some morbid appearances of the absorbent glands and spleen" (Medico-Chirurgical Transactions 17 [1832]: 68-114).         [AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED BY WILLIAM ROBERTSON, REGARDING VIGILANTISM IN SAN ANTONIO, WRITTEN JUST AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF THE TEXAS REVOLUTION]

      San Antonio de Bexar. June 25, 1836.. [4]pp. Typical mailing folds. Very good. With the original mailing envelope. An interesting manuscript account of vigilante activity, and life in general in San Antonio two months after the Battle of San Jacinto, which brought victory and independence to the Republic of Texas. The first major campaign of the Texas Revolution took place at San Antonio de Bexar in October-December 1835, the only major Texian success other than San Jacinto. The Alamo occurred just four months prior to this. ^William Robertson writes to his brother that he still awaits the return of Capt. Pope from whom he expects to receive back pay so that he can send money to pay off a note. He proceeds then to relate the post-war excitement in San Antonio: ^"I suppose you have seen some accounts in the papers of the fights & disturbances in this city, during the past few weeks. Some short time before I came here there was an organized body of horse thieves & cattle thieves extending over a large portion of west Texas, & having San Antonio for their headquarters. They were carrying their depredations & oftentimes murders to such an extent & with such boldness, as could be endured no longer. A vigilance committee was organized in this place, who took the matter in hand. They published a list of the names of all who were known or strongly suspected of being connected with the thieves or gamblers warning them to leave instantly, and then kept constant patrols out who caught all they could find & hung them in the neighborhood of the city. In this way some 8 or 10 have been hung. Some few days before my arrival there was a desperate fight here with some four or five gamblers & the committee, in which three or four men were killed & several wounded. Since that time the city has been more quiet than for a long time previous & there is now probably as little fighting or gambling carried on here as in most western cities. Indeed it is quite a dull place at present." ^Robertson goes on to talk about the current devastating drought, observing that the "cotton in most places is past redemption." Then he mentions that he has made some acquaintances and observed some "very good Presbyterian preaching...as well as Methodist & Catholic." He closes the letter by assuring those back home that he is in good health. Robertson is believed to have come to Texas from Amherst County, Virginia to participate in the Texas Revolution. An outstanding letter with great San Antonio content during the Republic period. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed to "John B Robertson" in Amherst County, Virginia, with a three-cent stamp and postmarked from San Antonio.

      Charleston: Dan J. Dowling, 1836. - [2],[6],311,[1]pp. Antique half calf and marbled boards. A couple of small ink notations to the outer margin of text, light foxing. Untrimmed, very good. One of the rarest personal narratives of the second Seminole War of 1835-36. The volume was absent from the Streeter collection, which contained some of the rarest Seminole War material. It is also lacking from several otherwise exhaustive collections of southern military history. The author was an officer in the South Carolina volunteer regiment commanded by Col. A.H. Brisbane. James Servies, in the new edition of his BIBLIOGRAPHY OF WEST FLORIDA, identifies the author as W.W. Smith on the basis of a NILES WEEKLY REGISTER article about the book. Smith gives a general history of the beginning of the war, then proceeds to a narrative of his experience with the South Carolina volunteers between the formation of the regiment in January 1836 and the termination of their service at St. Augustine in May. He gives a lively firsthand account of the campaign and his part in it, with interesting observations on the land, natural history, and Indians, as well as military details. Sowohl die bayerische Regentschaft und das übrige Gefolge wie auch die griechischen Politiker und Freiheitshelden sind porträtgenau dargestellt. Besonders reizvoll ist das schöne Blatt in der Gegenüberstellung mit der Lithographie von Bodmer, die König Ludwig und seine Familie beim Betrachten des Ölgemäldes von Peter von Hess darstellt. - Guter kontrastreicher Druck und sehr feines Kolorit. Im Himmel berieben. Einriss professionell restauriert. Handgefertigter Modellrahmen, die Beschriftung auf der Rückseite der Rahmung montiert.
