Piscatorial Reminiscences and Gleanings by An Old Angler and Bibliopolist. To which is added A Catalogue of Books on Angling

London: William Pickering, 1836. First edition. Tipped in at front free endpaper is a separately printed, folding "Table of the Approximate Weights of Fish according to their Lengths ... by Joseph Gwilt, sold by Eaton of Crooked Lane". Lithographic frontispiece and numerous vignettes. vii, 255, [40] pp. 1 vols. 12mo. Original green cloth, printed spine label (dated 1836). Some rubbing at spine ends, label somewhat rubbed and soiled. Very good plus. The Birth of Angling Bibliography More "the result of paste and scissors" (Westwood & Satchell) than a coherent text, but redeemed by the groundbreaking bibliography of angling books prepared by Pickering, who states in the Catalogue that it "is formed upon Sir Henry Ellis's corrected copy of the list, which he contributed to the British Bibliographer in 1811, and which he kindly lent for the purpose.".

        Map of the United States

New York: Webster, 1836. Folding engraved pocket map with full period hand-colouring (sheet size: 16 x 19 5/8 inches), wth a second folding sheet of accompanying letterpress text within a type-ornament border, entitled "Travellers Guide and Statistical View of the United States." (sheet size: 18 x 22 inches). (Small repaired tears to both sheets). Original dark blue raon-backed printed paper-covered boards (extremities scuffed). A very rare early travellers' guide to the United States. "The map is from a discarded plate of H. Phelps' U.S. [1832]... The index is largely stolen from Mitchell's Traveller's Guide index sheet for 1832, however the information on roads and distances is taken from someone else ... The map has the characteristic oval portrait of Washington, reengraved ... from the Phelps issue. Webster put this together from Phelps, Mitchell and (?) and it is very scarce - I can find no references to it" (Rumsey). Rumsey 3450.

Nachfolge Christi. Ein Gebet-und Erbauungsbuch fur gebildete Katholische Christen. Mit Anwendungen und Betarchtungen von Archer, Bordoni (et al.)

Leipzig: J.J. Weber, 1836. Large 8vo. viii, 368 pp. With an engraved frontispiece after Raphael, engraved title-page printed in red and hand-colored in blue, and 3 engraved plates after Raphael, Overbeck, and Leonardo da Vinci (see below). ADDED: pasted on verso of frontispiece is a lithograph by Franz Hanfstaengl, of Munich, of "Christus vor Jerusalem" by W. Hole. Contemporary German dark brown morocco, profusely gilt and inlaid: in centers a Romaneque cathedral window, surrounded by elaborate ornamental frames build of small and large tools, inlaid in red, outer boarders composed of an leafy ornamental roll, smooth spine gilt and lettered direct, all edges gilt, comb-marbled pastedowns (front flyleaf removed; covers bowed and somewhat worn at extremities; frontipiece with small worm-hole in blank margin; plates and opposing leaves foxed). Overall a good copy with some faults and priced correctly An elaborately gold-tooled German binding, possibly executed in Leipzig (or Munich?), exhibiting elements of the "cathedral" style of bookbinding that was then in fashion in France and England, but found much less frequently in Germany. Indeed, this is a curious and very unusual German example in which decidedly "Victorian" elements can be seen in the design and tooling, presenting a great deal of charm and exuberance. * A contemporary review of this edition was published in "Der Katholik" (Speyer, 1837): "This edition of the excellent book of the followers of Jesus Christ deserves to have a special display because of special splendor and beauty which stands out, and is thus excellently suited as souvenirs for many Christians. The title page is finely illuminated, but the real adornment of the book, which is printed on fine paper with care and taste, can be seen in the four steel engravings: the Cross (after Raphael), Jesus blessing the Children (after Overbeck), the Lord's Supper (after Leonardo da Vinci), and the Transfiguration of Christ (after Raphael). The work has just been published and costs 2 Thaler" (SOURCE: Der Katholik: eine religiose Zeitschrift, 26 Band. 17 Jahr. III-IV Heft. p. 30). * A surprising addition to the ensemble is the lithograph by the studio of Franz Hanfstaengl (1804-1877) who in 1833 founded a lithography studio in Munich; it was to become a major operation, from which lithographic portraits and reproduction of art were produced by the hundreds of thousands (SOURCE: Historisches Lexikon Bayerns). The Kunstverlag Franz Hanfstaengl continued operation until 1980.

London: Richard Bentley 1836, 1st Edition. () xv,(2),312; viii,321pp. Very good. Small Octavo. 2 volumes. Bound in contemporary half morocco and marbled boards. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Gilt spine with the titles and decoration in six panels. Half title in volume one. Frontispiece in each volume. One other single page illustration. One full page map. The first edition bound in two volumes is much scarcer than the later issue of the book bound in one. King's narrative is considerablely rarer than Back's account of their expedition down the Great Fish River. The second issue bound in one volume with an new title page was obviously bound up by King from the left over sheets and was to take advantage of the interest in the Franklin expedition. We believe this is the first book to show and illustration of a marmot..

Londres: W.H. Allen, 1836. publisher's blind stamped cloth. 4to. publisher's blind stamped cloth. x, (6), lxxx, 214 pages, 5 lithographs, (2) with errata. First edition of the French translation done by Sarah Davids. A grammar of the Turkish language with a preliminary discourse and Ottoman Turkish excerpts with translations. In the discourse, Davids (1811-1832) argues that the Turks are a separate, honorable, and intelligent race with a beautiful and complex language. Davids' writings were translated into Turkish in 1851, and the historian Bernard Lewis writes that this book, "made the Turks imagine themselves as having a distinct nationality and independence." Also contains five lithographs illustrating excerpts from ancient and modern Turkish texts by the early English lithographer Joseph Netherclift. (see Twyman, Early Lithographed Bookspages 236-239). Netherclift had been producing lithographic work in London since around 1820, and as Twyman states became "the leading producer of lithographed facsimiles in Britain," until he was succeeded by his son in 1855. Multiple tables with French, phonetic Turkish pronunciation, and Turkish script. Wear to head and tail of spine with some small holes to rear hinge. Minor discoloration to boards.

The Astrolabe sailed south, around the Cape of Good Hope, and arrived at Port Jackson. Proceeding to New Zealand, its coast, especially the southern part of Cook Strait, was surveyed with great care. Tonga and parts of the Fiji Archipelago were explored, then New Britain, New Guinea, Amboina, Tasmania, Vanikoro, Guam, and Java. The return home was by way of Mauritius and the Cape of Good Hope.         Exposition du système du monde

Paris: Bachelier, 1836. Sixth edition. Quarter morocco. Very good. Two vols., 8vo (210 × 135 mm), pp. viii, (xxviii), 358; vii, [1, blank], 568; a bright, crisp text; light spots of dampstaining to vol. II; very good in contemporary morocco-backed marbled boards, gilt decorative spines with gilt emblem of the Prix, Collège Royal de Poitiers to the upper covers of both volumes. Sixth edition. One of Laplace's most influential books, his Exposition du système du monde was first published in 1796. It was in this work that Laplace set out his famous nebular hypothesis. The Exposition consists of five books. The first is on the apparent motions of the celestial bodies, the motion of the sea, and also atmospheric refraction; the second is on the actual motion of the celestial bodies; the third on force and momentum; the fourth on the theory of universal gravitation, including an account of the motion of the sea and the shape of the Earth; and the final book provides an historical account of astronomy and includes the famous account of the nebular hypothesis. In essence the Exposition is in the form of a popular, non-mathematical account of the more technical work, the Traité de mécanique céleste (5 vols., 1799-1825). Kant had already speculated as to the possibility of the nebular hypothesis for the origin of the solar system in 1755, and Swedenborg had hinted at it to already in 1734, but it was Laplace who worked out the details in these two works. While later scientists turned away from the Laplacian model, starting with Viktor Safronov's (1917-1999) Evolution of the protoplanetary cloud and formation of the Earth and planets (1969), a modern version of the nebular hypothesis has come to be the most commonly held view of the origins of the solar system once more.Of the sixth edition Houzeau and Lancaster note that it is 'la plus complète des éditions', including the additions of the fifth edition, but retaining those chapters the fifth edition deleted from earlier editions.Crawford, 272; Houzeau and Lancaster I, ii, 8940; Poggendorff, I, 1375; Roller-Goodman II, 76.COPAC records copies of the sixth edition at Trinity College Dublin and University College London.
