Junius: Including Letters by the Same

London - F. C. and J. Rivington, 1814. London - F. C. and J. Rivington, 1814 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A collection of the letters of the mysterious 'Junius', a contributor of many socially influential letters to the Public Advertiser in the eighteenth century. Junius was the pseudonym of a writer who contributed a series of letters to the Public Advertiser, from 21 January 1769 to 21 January 1772. The signature had been already used, apparently by him, in a letter of 21 November 1768. These and numerous other personal letters were not included in his Letters of Junius collection, published in 1772. Including three folding facsimiles. Two volumes of a three-volume set. Condition: In half-calf bindings. Externally, generally smart, though a little rubbed, with some wears to the heads and tails of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages have some instances of spotting, but are bright. Overall: GOOD..

This version of the opera Fidelio/Leonore, with revised libretto by Treitschke, was first performed on May 23rd 1814 at the K.K. Theater in Vienna. "Fidelio slumbered till the beginning of 1814, when Beethoven, to his evident surprise, learned that three singers wished to revive it at the Kärntnertor for their benefit. He agreed on condition that he was permitted to make changes. This time the revision of the libretto was entrusted (with Sonnleithner's permission) to Treitschke, an experienced man of the theatre. Beethoven worked at the score from March until 15 May. He found it an arduous task: 'I could compose something new far more quickly than patch up the old. I have to think out the entire work again. this opera will win for me a martyr's crown' (to Treitschke, April). The new overture was not ready in time for the first performance (23 May) [at the Kärntnertor Theatre in Vienna], when that to The Ruins of Athens was substituted. It made its début on the second night (26 May). The conductor was Ignaz Umlauf. The seventh performance on 18 July was for Beethoven's benefit; his advertisement stated that 'two new pieces have been added'. From this revival, followed on 21 November by Weber's production in Prague, the success of the opera was assured." Dean: Beethoven and Opera in The Beethoven Reader, p. 340. 2 volumes. Oblong folio.         A Practical Treatise on the Ordinary Operations of the Holy Spirit

London - Valpy8.5 by 5; (xx)256pp., 1814. London - Valpy8.5 by 5; (xx)256pp., 1814 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A thoughtfully-distilled but unforgiving assertion of the valuelessness of superficial religiousness. George Faber (1773-1854) was educated at Oxford, where he was made a fellow of University College in 1793. He resigned his fellowship a decade later in order to marry, and took up a series of livings (including Long Newton, to which he is identified as being rector in this edition) before becoming prebendary of Salisbury in 1830. Faber was an evangelical (but not a dissenter) who stressed the importance of faith as faith's own justification, and the absolute authority of the scriptures. Faber completed his treatise on the Holy Spirit in 1800, but was by his own definition 'in no hurry' to publish, preferring instead to reflect on and digest what he had written. The work finally appeared c1813-14. Within, he asserts that people are 'no better than heathens' if their Christianity is outward only. Instead, he advocates a 'radical change of heart' accompanied by a concerted change in 'outward manners. 'Condition: Externally, bound in old Morrocco with gilt lines and damaged label across chipped spine. Corners worn. Internally, hinges tender but otherwise firmly bound. Pages very bright notwithstanding some foxing and damp stain to bottom of first few leaves. Bookplate of Professor David Arthur Pailin to front pastedown. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Contemporary half leather with slight signs of use. Apart from a marginal cut in first volume final leaf and smudges of second volume final leaf, a remarkable fine copy of the best issue of this famous and rare bee book. The, since his fifteen years, blind Swiss Huber was called "the father of modern bee science". He designed a famous beehive with movable "leaves" like pages in a book and proved that the bee-queen came from a worker larvae. Huber, who lost his sight in young age, exemplifies how a man of courage can triumph over blindness..

        Biblia Hebraica

Philadelphia: Cura et Impensis Thomae Dobson, 1814. Philadelphia: Cura et Impensis Thomae Dobson, 1814. First edition. Leather_bound. Fine. Secundum ultimam editionem Jos. Athiae, a Johanne Leusden denuo recognitam, recensita variisque notis latinis illustrata ab Everardo Van Der Hooght, V.D.M. Editio prima Americana, sine punctis masorethicis. Philadelphia: Cura et Impensis Thomae Dobson, MDCCCXIV [1814]. Half titles present in each volume. Two volumes, octavo. Modern calf binding, supplied half-title volume 2, some staining, otherwise a fine set.& & Hebrew was held in such high esteem by the founders of the American Republic that a story emerged at the time of the Revolution that Hebrew was being considered as a possible substitute for English as the American language. The reason had as much to do with absolute indifference towards anything having to do with England as it had with America’s symbolic view of equating our rebellion against the British with the struggle of the Israelites against the Egyptian Pharaoh.& Ironically, as Hebrew, the language of the Jewish people, gained acceptance and status among the New World gentiles, less than half of the original states, at the time of the 1814 printing, accepted the political equality of the Jew in America.& The study of the Bible was the cornerstone of learning in Puritan America. Indeed, it was oftentimes the only book the common folk would ever read during their lifetime. Despite a drop off in Biblical interest at the turn of the 18th century (in favor of the new developments in science and technology) a major revival was felt a scant decade and a half later. The prominent Protestant Seminaries, principally Andover, felt strongly that the Bible should be studied in it’s true, sacred, language. All entry-level clerical students were required to have a working knowledge of Hebrew. As pilgrims from America began flocking to the Holy Land, they applied their newly found knowledge of Hebrew and the Bible to understanding the ancient world.& In 1812, Jonathan Horwitz, a Jewish/Dutch printer, appeared in America with a box of type in hand determined to publish a Hebrew Bible based on the text by Everado Van der Hooght (1642-1716). Van der Hooght’s first Hebrew Bible had met with great success upon its publication in Amsterdam in 1705 and became a model for many other editions of the Hebrew Bible. Mr. Horwitz quickly met with both personal and financial difficulties in regards to publishing his Bible and sold his share (as well as the current list of subscribers) to Thomas Dobson, the eventual publisher.& The subscriber’s price of nearly seven dollars per volume was certainly exorbitant for the time, yet the need for an accurate, scholarly rendition of a Hebrew Bible for religious students was acute. Both Harvard Divinity School and Andover ordered 40 copies apiece.& VERY SCARCE. A.S.W. Rosenbach, in his American Jewish Bibliography (1926) cites only three known copies in America. Despite the fact that additional copies have come to light in the past half-century, this set remains scarce on the market today. This is a particularly lovely copy.&

Although found guilty on part of one of four charges, he was subjected only to a reprimand.         Elements of Agricultural Chemistry

London - Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1814. London - Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1814 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A second edition of Davy's fascinating lectures on agricultural chemistry, illustrated with a number of finely-engraved fold-out plates. Sir Humphry Davy, 1st Baronet FRS MRIA (17 December 1778 29 May 1829) was a British chemist and inventor. He is probably best remembered today for his discoveries of several alkali and alkaline earth metals, as well as contributions to the discoveries of the elemental nature of chlorine and iodine. Berzelius called Davy's 1806 Bakerian Lecture On Some Chemical Agencies of Electricity one of the best memoirs which has ever enriched the theory of chemistry. In 1815 he invented the Davy lamp, which allowed miners to work safely in the presence of flammable gases. Davy's Royal Institution lectures included spectacular and sometimes dangerous chemical demonstrations for his audience, a generous helping of references to divine creation, and genuine scientific information. Not only a popular lecturer, the young and handsome Davy acquired a huge female following around London. When Davy's lecture series on the new subject of Galvanism ended, he progressed to a new series on Agricultural Chemistry, and his popularity continued to skyrocket. By June 1802, after just over a year at the Institution and at the age of 23, Davy was nominated to full lecturer at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. Complete with ten fold-out plates. Condition: In a half calf binding with cloth-covered boards. Externally, water-damage to spine and loss to spine label. Slight cracking to rear joint. Front hinge strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Slight water damage to all plates and a number of further pages. Foxing to some plates and first and last few pages, otherwise generally bright. Overall: GOOD (ONLY).

Contents, Slight loss also some staining and a partial number to extreme top corner of title page. Though conventionally bound at some time before 1851 when the inscription says it was presented to the 'Florence (?) Church Library the three holes from original 'stab' binding are visible at gutter, not effecting text, also some light age toning and a couple of pages have lost the very extreme top corner, 1cm approximately. Being part of a modest -this being book number 318 apparently- private library probably explains the numbers on the front free endpaper, and the reason for the figure '318' ? to the top corner of the title page. There is also a stamp to the rear free end paper stating 'Cancelled & Catalogued' there are no other signs that this book had ever been in an, albeit private, library as it is otherwise clean and tightly bound. An interesting and not unattractive copy of this scarce Naval memoir from the Napoleonic era. Size: 8.25 inches tall by 5.25 inches. iv, 212 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 201-750 grams. Category: Biography & Autobiography; Ships & the Sea. Inventory No: 8393. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The words Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee make their first appearance in print near the end of volume I, in one of the most celebrated and most frequently quoted (and sometimes misquoted) epigrams, satirising the disagreements between George Frideric Handel and Giovanni Battista Bononcini.         Picture of Worthing; to which is added an Account of the adjacent Villages, and the Rides and Excursions in its Vicinity. Second Edition. Greatly enlarged, and embellished with plates. In two Volumes. FIRST SEPARATE ACCOUNT OF THE TOWN

Printed and Sold by William Phillips, Worthing, [and others in London], 1814. Printed and Sold by William Phillips, Worthing, [and others in London], 1814. 2 vols., in 1, 12mo., Second and Best Edition, with large folding copper-engraved plate and engraved plate coloured by hand as frontispieces, 2 engraved maps (each finely coloured by hand) and a large folding engraved plan, some very light age-staining; attractively and firmly bound in mid-nineteenth century half calf, green straight-grain cloth boards, back with five flat bands, second compartment with leather label lettered and ruled in gilt, last compartment with date in gilt, red edges, yellow endpapers, a remarkably clean, crisp, well-preserved copy. Evans' most notable work - the first separate account of the town, resort and vicinity - was first published in 1805 to record his sojourn there of the previous summer. The first edition would appear to be particularly scarce; we have been able to locate only two institutional copies (one in the British Library). This greatly enlarged version adds a second volume devoted to the local rides and excursions 'from the pen of a gentleman who is, from long residence, well acquainted with that part of Sussex, and who feels warmly interested in the welfare and prosperity of Worthing'. There are also extra maps and plates. Anderson, p. 285 (recording only this edition); not in Upcott.. . Catalogs: topography: sussex.

        Oeuvres de M. Mignet:

squ'en 1814 (in 2 volumes);, 1852. squ'en 1814 (in 2 volumes);, 1852 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A uniformly bound collection of some of the works of Franois Auguste Marie Mignet (1796- 1884) was a French journalist and historian. In eight volumes which are:Portraits and Historical and Literary Records (in 2 volumes); History of Mary Stuart (in 2 volumes); Antonio Perez and Philip II; History of the French Revolution From 1789 to 1814 (in 2 volumes); Charles V's Abdication and his Death at the Monastery of YusteMignet worked slowly and lingered over research, with the exception of his Histoire de la rvolution franaise (1824) which was chiefly a political manifesto in support of the Liberal cause, in form of an enlarged sketch, prepared in four months, in which more stress was laid on fundamental theories than on the facts. Mignet was well known in fashionable circles where his witty conversation and pleasant manners made him a favourite. Most of his time was devoted to study and to his academic duties. Eulogies on his deceased fellow-members, the Academy reports on its work, and on the prizes awarded by it, which it was part of Mignet's duty as secretary to draw up, were thoroughly appreciated by connoisseurs, and were collected in Mignet's Notices et portraits. Mignet's most famous works are devoted to modern history. His Histoire de Marie Stuart (2 vols. , 1851) made use of previously unpublished documents from the archives of Simancas. He devoted several volumes to a history of Spain, which had a well-deserved success, including, Charles Quint, son abdication, son sjour et sa mort au monastre de Yuste (1845); Antonio Perez et Philippe II. (1845). Condition: Handsomely bound in quarter morocco binding with marbledpaper covered boards. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities and the odd mark to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean but with odd spotting in places and slight off-setting to endpapers from binding. Overall: VERY GOOD.

        Border Antiquities

London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1814 - 1817. London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1814 - 1817 Illustrated with 94 illustrated plates by John Grieg after paintings by Luke Clennell, Alexander Nasmyth, and George Arnald, among other artists. First edition. Two volumes. Bound in contemporary full red straight grained Morocco, with five raised bands to the spine, spine compartments elaborately tooled in gilt, beautiful decorative borders stamped in blind and gilt to the boards, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. Minor toning to the spines, spines rebacked with original spines laid on, light wear to the extremities, minor rubbing and soiling to the boards, some minor spotting to the endpapers, otherwise exceptionally bright pages and plates. Lovely in a contemporary binding. Border Antiquities is a historical account of the border between England and Scotland, told through the analysis of architectural and sculptural landmarks. Specifically, the text discusses churches, castles, cathedrals, towers, monasteries, bridges, and abbeys, as well as personal artifacts. Although he was not the sole author, Sir Walter Scott's extensive introduction, poetry excerpts, and clear affinity for Scottish history that is apparent in much of his writing, designate him as the main contributor to this monumental work. In his 127 page introduction, Scott explains the academic interest in political border rather than mainland regions: "Numerous castles left to moulder in massive ruins; fields where the memory of ancient battles still lives among the descendants of those by whom they were fought or witnessed; the very line of demarcation, which, separating the two countries, though no longer hostile, induces the inhabitants of each to cherish their separate traditions, - unite to render these regions interesting to the topographical historian or antiquary." Scottish Borders were also of personal interest to Scott; in addition to spending part of his childhood in the region, the poet and historian spent the last decades of his life at Abbotsford, located on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders. Border Antiquities was illustrated by John Grieg, who designed, engraved, and printed the 94 illustrations after paintings by various artists. In addition to the text and illustrations, Border Antiquities contains a 101 page appendix and 11 page general index. This set was bound contemporary to publication, as the use of straight grained Morocco was popular during the years 1810 - 1840. Even though it's termed "Morocco," implying goat skin, the most common skin used for this type of binding was sheep. As sheep is the least sturdy material for binding, the treatment of the skin makes it sturdier, with the pattern stamped and then glazed. This organic pattern is referred to as English or American straight grained Morocco; on Continental straight grained Morocco, the impression appears more as short diagonal stripes.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

* Voir photographie(s) / See picture(s).
