Consideration of Various Points of Analysis...from the Philosophical Transactions

Several diagrams in the text. 1 p.l., 33 (i.e. 29) pp. Large 4to, orig. blue wrappers, uncut. London: W. Bulmer, 1814. First separate edition, with new pagination. This offprint belonged to Carl Friedrich Gauss, with the "Gauss-Bibliothek" stamp on the title. This copy was no doubt sent by Herschel to Europe's leading mathematician. The present work is an important contribution to mathematical notation by Herschel, who was, with Charles Babbage and George Peacock, a founder of the famous Analytical Society, a group of Cambridge mathematical reformers. They wanted to leave behind the fluxional, Newtonian notation so prevalent in 18th-century Britain and embrace the algebraically based conception of the calculus developed by Lagrange. In this work, Herschel professes "his belief in the fruitfulness of the method of separating the symbols of operation from those of quantity."-S.E. Despeaux, "Very Full of Symbols" in Episodes in the History of Modern Algebra (1800-1950), (2007), ed. by J.J. Gray & K.H. Parshall, p. 54. Fine copy and rare. With the stamp of the Royal Observatory at Göttingen on upper wrapper (with release stamp on front paste-down endpaper) and title. .

Quérard I, 396. Bourquelot II, 322. Davois, Les Bonaparte littérateurs, p. 23. 2962 g. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Napoleonic War Medallion. Feldmarschall Karl Furst von Wrede

(Germany, c. 1814). (18)pp. A circular folding panorama with eight hand-colored copper engravings, less than an inch in diameter, depicting events during the Napoleonic Wars: the siege of Wurzburg, battles of Hanau, Brienne, Nogent, Bar sur Aube, and Troyes, the troops crossing the Rhine. Four of the engravings are on the front of the pages, and four are on the reverse. This panorama was created to commemorate Karl Philipp von Wrede's creation as a prince and promotion to field marshal in 1814. Wrede and the Bavarians had initially been allied with Napoleon during the Napoleonic Wars; however, in 1813, Wrede negotiated the Treaty of Ried between Austria and Bavaria, which united the Bavarians with the allies against Napoleon. In 1814, he represented the Bavarians at the Congress of Vienna. The first page, with a short biography of von Wrede, is pasted into the obverse of the medallion, and the last page, with a tribute to the hero, is pasted inside the reverse, so that the book opens out when the lid is removed. The panels are connected by ribbons and fold back into a disc-shaped box resembling a silver medallion, covered in decoratively stamped pewter and signed by the medalist and die-cutter, Johann Thomas Stettner (1785-1872) of Nuremburg. The box shows an image of Wrede's profile on the front and a picture of Victory crowning a Roman legionary with a circle of laurel leaves on the back. The pages of the panorama have been skillfully reattached, else very fine. Although mementos in the form of miniature books in "schraub-medaillen" were produced in Germany from the seventeenth century onward, they are extremely rare in this small size. (G. Förschner, Kleinkunst in Silber, Historisches Museum Frankfurt am Main, 1978). (Diameter: 1 3/16; 29mm).

        Autographed Letter Signed

Washington, 1814. unbound. Outstanding and historically important autographed letter signed -- an immediate and first-hand account of the death of Vice President Elbridge Gerry on the morning of Nov. 23, 1814 while serving in office, 4to, 3 pages, Washington D.C. Written to Col. James T. Austin, Gerry's favorite son in law, in part: "...It becomes my painful duty to inform you of the death of your late most excellent father in law, my much esteemed friend, the late Honorable Vice President of the United States. He departed this life at 11 o'clock this morning, of a sudden infusion of the lungs [pneumonia]. He presided in usual health in the Senate yesterday, in the evening he complained a little and ordered some chocolate. After taking it he looked over his letters and papers and was cheerful through the evening. The next morning he sent for the landlady and desired her to have chocolate made thin - observing that he had a very strange feeling in his breasts but that he rested last night totally well...The chocolate was prepared and he breakfasted on it at the table with family...appearing totally well. At 10:00 the carriage came to take him to the Senate...it being rather early...but he rode to his office and went in. He then complained of feeling very sick - went back and sent for his carriage, which came immediately and went home. On stopping at our door Capt. Read, one of our porters...perceiving that he was very ill...stepped to the carriage and asked him if he was sick. He faintly replied 'yes'. He immediately took him in his arms and placed him on the bed in his room, where he expired in about 15 or 20 minutes without appearing to take any notice and without uttering another word. Dr. was immediately called and came about 5 minutes before he breathed his last - but nothing could be done for him. The melancholy tiding was immediately communicated to the President...and Congress. The Senate appointed a Committee to make arrangements for his funeral....to take place tomorrow at 1 o'clock. The keys of his closet and his books and papers will be sealed up - and the whole preserved without the least inspection until directed and received by his family..." Ironically, the morning Gerry died, he had attempted to participate in the Senate hearings at which the pros and cons of a Peace Treaty with Great Britain were debated. One month latter, on Dec. 24, 1814, the war officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent. Small tear-hole at left hand margin incurred by the removal of the wax seal; otherwise very good condition with rare postal markings. American financier and lawyer who was a close friend of Signer of the Declaration of Independence Elbridge Gerry. During the War of 1812, he was instrumental in securing a loan of $5,000,000 for the national government, which enabled the United States to pursue war with Great Britain. Despite founding the Exchange Bank of New York as well as other prestigious financial institutions, he spent the last years of his life in bankruptcy.

Those of his troops and officers who did not surrender were to be declared traitors, judged by a military commission, and shot within 24 hours if found carrying weapons. Artigas was the leader of an independent band of rebels during the conflict with Spain, but his independence caused problems for the United Provinces leading to this call for his capture and execution, neither of which occurred due to his widespread popularity. Later Artigas would lead the war for Uruguayan independence against Argentina and became its first president. Scarce. OCLC locates only one copy at UC Berkeley. Thomas Peall joined the Veterinary College in 1795, appointed Veterinary Professor and Lecturer to the Right Hon. The Dublin Society in 1800, Honorary Member of the Cork Institution, and Veterinary Surgeon, in the Royal Artillery. "Peall was a highly educated man, a closely observant student of clinical medicine, a hygienist of great ability, and a believer in the experimental method of enquiry. He wrote in a most attractive style, and his knowledge was years ahead of the general information of the day. After studying Peall's views it is impossible to understand why we have not heard more of him. His work never seems to have been properly appreciated excepting by Percivall and Blaine, probably because it was published in Ireland and little known in this country."—Smith.         PrEcis des dEcouvertes et travaux somiologiques de Mr. C. S. Rafinesque-Schmaltz, entre 1800 et 1814 - en Zoologie et en Botanique, pour servir d'introduction à ses ouvrages futurs. [With:] Circular Address on Botany and Zoology; followed by the prospectus of two periodical works, Annals of Nature and Somiology of North America

Palermo; Philadelphia: printed for the author, 1814; 1816. First editions of both works. 2 works in one volume vols., 12mo (136 x 92mm). 55, [1]; 36 pp. Near-contemporary blue leather-backed marbled paper- covered boards, spine gilt. Upper joint split but holding, infrequent light foxing. BM Nat. Hist. p. 1638; Circular Address: Sabin 67448; Eberstadt 138-604; Meisel III, p. 377 . Two rare and early works by the polymath naturalist Constantine Rafinesque (1783-1840), born in Constantinople and raised in Marseilles, though his name is forever associated with American botany, zoology, and linguistics. After an American apprenticeship, Rafinesque lived in Palermo from 1805 to 1815 and published classifications of new plants and animals in Sicily. The first title, printed in Palermo, reviews his work during the preceding decade and "serves as an introduction to his future works." The second title, his first publication in America, announces an amibitious serial publication to record the natural history of North America. Rafinesque's Florula Ludoviciana (1817) provoked controversy and a hostile reception. "Rafinesque's 'natural' system, adapted from French prototypes developed by Michel Adanson and Antoine de Jussieu, grouped plants according to their perceived morphological relationships, a system that prevailed by the middle of the century - But his life's work was totally ignored by his contemporaries, most of whom agreed with fellow botanist L.D. von Schweinitz, who wrote in 1832 that 'he is doubtless a man of immense knowledge - as badly digested as may be & crack-brained I am sure' - His reputation was rehabilitated about the middle of the twentieth century when it was acknowledged by most botanists that most of Rafinesque's 6,700 Latin plant names had been validly published according to rules since adopted by the botanists themselves" (ANB). Rafinesque, who is also well known for his work on the fishes of the Ohio and his studies of the mound-builders of the Ohio valley, was an early observer of the impermanence of species. Darwin cited him in Origin of Species (6th ed.) as one of three American naturalists who recognized that "species undergo modification." RARE

Elements of Chinese Grammar with a Preliminary Dissertation on The Characters, and the Colloquial Medium of the Chinese, and an Appendix. Containing the Ta-Hyoh of Confucius with a Translation

Serampore.: Printed at the Mission Press.. 1814.. Black and white illustration of an abacus in text, xvi + vii + [1] + Errata + [2] + 566 + 56pp. Clavis Sinica half title at half title and again as title page for second part. Professionally rebound marbled paper covered boards, leather spine with contrasting leather title label gilt. Modern endpapers, lacks one blank preliminary leaf. Occasional light browning, closed tear from the margin one leaf, some pencilling including some circling of words in red pencil. A little minor damage to some letters on a few leaves where the pencilling has been partially removed. Half title annotated. Largely the text is very clean. Large paper copy. Quarto. Lust 1020. Cordier 1661. Lowendahl 775. Diehl 85. The Serampore Mission Press was the first press to prepare movable metal types of Chinese Characters. The metal type printed Chinese characters with a clarity not found on the publications issued where woodblocks were used. Printing using movable metal types was found to be faster, and the cost, at one third the cost of printing in China, was much less (Diehl - Early Indian Imprints). Additionally the metal type characters had a longer life span. In 1814 two editions of 'Elements of Chinese Grammar...' were printed at the Mission Press at Serampore. This copy belongs to the edition, (presumably, though not stated, a revised edition), that has a total of 326 pages contrasting with the other edition of 317 pages. The two editions vary in a number of other ways which are detailed in Diehl. These, often very small differences, include the inclusion of Chinese characters on the title page of this edition whereas the other edition has none, the inclusion of a two page errata in this edition but not the other, etc. Joshua Marshman, the author of this scarce early Chinese grammar was a Baptist missionary scholar. Until 1799 Marshman was employed as a school master in England leaving that year with his family for India. Already a proven scholar of languages, Marshman, was conversant with Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Arabic, on arrival in Bengal he immediately began studying Bengali and Sanskrit. By 1806 he had translated the Bible into both of these languages and was ready to turn his mind to the Chinese language which he had long been interested in. His aim was to translate the Bible into Chinese. Johannes Lassar, an Armenian who it is believed was born in Macao, was his teacher. Alhough the two men had no common language within 8 years Marshman's Chinese language knowledge was such that he wrote this pioneering grammar. Unfortunately controversy surrounded its publication, as it coincided with Robert Morrison's 'Chinese Grammar' arriving in India for Marshman's editorial help and publication. Joshua Marshman always vehemently denied any plagarism, pointing out that he sighted only a few sheets before his own work was published, however there was much whispering in the Baptist community in England which caused Marshman a great deal of distress. Following the publication of 'Elements of Chinese Grammar' Marshman continued with his Chinese translation work and by 1818 he had completed the translation of the Bible in its entirety into Chinese. It was later published in 1823. (The Life and Times of Carey, Marshman, and Ward: Embracing the History of the Serampore Mission - John Clark Marshman. 1859). 'Elements of Chinese Grammar...' is often referred to by the title that appears on its half title page 'Clavis Sinica'. Tipped in onto the upper margin of one leaf of this copy of 'Elements of Chinese Grammar' is a manuscript Chinese bill for a lotion. The bill, which is written in Chinese characters, has been annotated in English "I send this as a curious specimen of the way the Chinese make out a bill and the number of words they use to export one thing. Yrs T. C?th" The characters giving the name of the item being sold are translated into English as "White/Body/Stink/Cow/Oil/Tub?One" this translation is accompanied by a note which remarks this is not a very desirable lotion! Another note makes comments on the price. A very good copy of an important Chinese language work. Scarce on the market. .

Theater in Vienna. & & "Fidelio slumbered till the beginning of 1814, when Beethoven, to his evident surprise, learned that three singers wished to revive it at the Kärntnertor for their benefit. He agreed on condition that he was permitted to make changes. This time the revision of the libretto was entrusted (with Sonnleithner's permission) to Treitschke, an experienced man of the theatre. Beethoven worked at the score from March until 15 May. He found it an arduous task: 'I could compose something new far more quickly than patch up the old... I have to think out the entire work again... this opera will win for me a martyr's crown' (to Treitschke, April). The new overture was not ready in time for the first performance (23 May) [at the Kärntnertor Theatre in Vienna], when that to The Ruins of Athens was substituted. It made its début on the second night (26 May)... The conductor was Ignaz Umlauf. The seventh performance on 18 July was for Beethoven's benefit; his advertisement stated that 'two new pieces have been added'. From this revival, followed on 21 November by Weber's production in Prague, the success of the opera was assured." Dean: Beethoven and Opera in The Beethoven Reader, p. 340.

HISTORY OF THE EXPEDITION UNDER THE COMMAND OF CAPTAINS LEWIS AND CLARK, TO THE SOURCES OF THE MISSOURI, THENCE ACROSS THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS AND DOWN THE RIVER COLUMBIA TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN. PERFORMED DURING THE YEARS 1804-5-6

Philadelphia: J. Maxwell for Bradford & Inskeep and Abm. H. Inskeep, 1814.. Two volumes. xxviii,470; ix,[1],522pp. plus five maps and charts. Large folding map present in excellent facsimile. Expertly bound to style in full tree calf, gilt, spines gilt, black morocco labels. Repaired tear to p.337/338 in first volume. Else very good. Provenance: Samuel Latham Mitchill Barlow (book label, his sale lot 51). The first edition of the "definitive account of the most important exploration of the North American continent" (Wagner-Camp). A cornerstone of Western Americana. The book describes the government-backed expedition to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase undertaken from 1804 to 1806 by ascending the Missouri to its source, crossing the Rocky Mountains, and reaching the Pacific Ocean. In total, the expedition covered some eight thousand miles in slightly more than twenty-eight months. Lewis and Clark brought back the first reliable information about much of the area they traversed, made contact with the Indian inhabitants as a prelude to the expansion of the fur trade, and advanced by a quantum leap the geographical knowledge of the continent. The large folding map of the West was not issued with all copies, and in fact was priced separately and cost almost as much as the book itself. This official account of the expedition is as much a landmark in Americana as the trip itself. The narrative has been reprinted many times and remains a perennial American bestseller. The observations in the text make it an essential work of American natural history, ethnography and science. It is the first great U.S. government expedition, the first book on the Rocky Mountain West, and a host of other firsts. It is among the most famous American books. WAGNER-CAMP 13:1. The author was a captain in the Russian navy and commander of the "Neva." The long chart shows the track of the voyage, and there are charts of the Washington Islands, Cadiack, and the Harbor of St. Paul, the coast from Bering's Bay to Sea Otter Bay, Sitka or Norfolk Sound, etc.; with colored views of the Harbor of St. Paul in the Island of Cadiack. And New Archangel in Norfolk Sound. There are also plates of Indian implements, etc. The work is important also as the principal source for the Sitka Massacre" (Soliday 873).
